Controversial gun takes?

As someone who is (relatively) newer to the gun community. I’m curious what are your controversial gun takes?
Mine is Most of the time stock guns look better than any upgrades people pay a lot of money for.
Icy-Medicine-495@reddit
Reloading is not worth it unless you are shooting exotic rounds they no longer make commercially in bulk.
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
I'm loading 9mm for 13¢ a round....
.38 Super for 15¢ a round
.45 ACP for 14¢ a round
If I use my cast bullets that price drops a bit. 9mm for $6.50/100.
Icy-Medicine-495@reddit
Hmm I just checked the price of primers for the first time in 2 plus years (I stocked pile 7 years ago) and they are much cheaper now. Last time I looked was 10 cents a round.
Hey controversial takes here was accomplished. I admit my experience with reloading has not been great. Ammo doesn't seem to be any better than commercial and the dillon progressive press I bought had nothing but issues before I sold it for a loss. I run a Lee turret press now for the rare 9mm largo round and it is not the fastest. Everything seems slow. Then when I am reloading it is to hot or to cold to be comfortable.
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
What kind of issues with the Dillon?
I run a pair of 650's and they are easy to work with and Dillon CS is awesome.
I can easily do 500 rounds per hour of pistol ammo. That's with the case feeder and no bullet feeder.
Icy-Medicine-495@reddit
I believe it was a 550 9mm press. The auto primer part of the press got fucked up really badly. It wouldn't feed them correctly and the spent primers jammed up the rotational head where the cartridge sits. I replaced parts on it to fix it once but it happened again and was even worse. It felt like I wasn't saving any money so I got rid of it.
SayNoToStim@reddit
I saved so much money on 6.5 Creedmoor since 2020 though.
Garbage rounds were ~.85/1.00 a shot in 2020, but I was doing long range and match ammo was $2/shot, I got that down to .65/shot.
Yeah there is "labor" involved but I sat there watching movies/sports on the weekend while doing it.
Icy-Medicine-495@reddit
Sure if you are saving a dollar plus a round that makes sense. I just don't get people that reload the cheaper rounds and are saving 5-20 cents. I personally reload 9mm largo. Only place I could find it sells it for 1 dollar or more a round and only 2 places sold it. So I save at least 80 plus cents a round easily and it could be up to a dollar. I reloaded 500 rounds for my Spanish destroyer carbine 3 years ago and only shot half of them.
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
20¢ a round...times 1000 rounds is $200 saved in a couple hours...
drebinf@reddit
You haven't checked the price of say .32 H&R Magnum lately. Maybe it's a little exotic, but ...
REDACTED3560@reddit
If you only shoot NATO calibers, sure. Anything else and I can reload substantially cheaper and it’ll be more accurate. I can make really premium hunting ammo for the 300 WM for $1.50 or so a round when the ammo with the same components would be easily $4 a round off the shelf.
Reloading is mandatory on exotic calibers, but still very worthwhile on even the common ones.
Clunk500CM@reddit
Is reloading worth it?
Financially: Maybe.
Customization: Yes.
Fun Hobby: Yes.
Low_Wrongdoer_1107@reddit
Financially. Not FINANCIALLY worth it.
But it’s fun, it’s more time spent in the shop. My reloads are often more accurate and consistent than factory ammo. I can reload at 11:00 on a cold winter night when most other shooting-related activities are unavailable. It’s not cheaper for most things. But I’m going to spend money on my sport and this is one of the things I spend it on.
RandoAtReddit@reddit
I hate reloading.
Ok-Sky-1793@reddit
Make LGS's great again. Require gun proficiency demonstrations once a year or every other year. Taking my concealed carry class put me side by side with people carrying firearms that cant hit a fucking paper target at 7 yards. It was scary.
Of course everyone will get free ammo delivered each year :) Just take it out of the ATF's budget
GFEIsaac@reddit
your fear is your justification for restricting other people's rights?
bigj4155@reddit
My fear of getting shot by someone that has no ability to control a firearm.... sure? Wtf are y ou asking me haha.
GFEIsaac@reddit
So you agree with restricting the second amendment based on your feelings?
bigj4155@reddit
Dude what? So let's work this out. Someone can barely hit a paper target. Not the design on the target but the whole ass target. So if a person was to defend themselves but miss every shot at the intended target and instead kills 9 people randomly you good with that? I think the point was to have people actually train with a gun
BoxPsychological6915@reddit
There should be more PCC’s in larger pistol calibers like .45 and 10mm, there’s no reason not to and a suppressed .45 sub gun would fuck
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
I have four .45 ACP PCC's and the lower for a fifth on the way.
I can tell you a suppressed .45 ACP SBR with a Super Safety ROCKS!
BoxPsychological6915@reddit
Which ones do you have and which ones do you prefer?
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
I bought a Foxtrot Mike .45 ACP pistol, and built the other three.
Ruger also has a PCC in 10mm and .45 ACP. But I have no experience with those.
GFEIsaac@reddit
Don't know how many you've shot PCC in those calibers but it is a much less fun experience than 9mm.
ChargerIIC@reddit
Mandatory firearm education in high school
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
Firearms safety should start in pre-school.
ChargerIIC@reddit
They have the whole "don't touch guns" as part of the K level classroom rhetoric, but I mean real four laws of firearm education with actual range use. Rip all the stigma off and let them learn exactly what is to be known and respected about firearms. Not what they see in movies.
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
That should start by the sixth grade. Prepare them early.
PNutTheSquirrel@reddit
Fundamentally there is very little difference between an Aero Precision lower and a Knights Armament lower. There are really only 5 forges, bro.
mjmjr1312@reddit
Not only is 9mm the superior pistol cartridge to 40/45/10mm etc but it remains the superior option even in ban states when limited to 10 rounds.
If the question was you get to shoot someone 10 times to stop them then I would take the larger caliber. But the reality is you will still have a limited time window to get rounds on target and you can always get those on target faster with 9mm over the others.
HailOfHarpoons@reddit
You can do that much better with .380 (or even 22 LR) if that is your only requirement. They are also easier to conceal.
Krusty69shackleford@reddit
Everybody needs some form of training and basic understanding of handling and self defense/hunting laws before purchase. I lived in Detroit for a bit for work, that’s why I have this take. I’m extremely pro 2A…but Detroit needs more laws, and heftier sentencing. Even the police don’t have a basic understanding of firearms and how to employ them.
abs0lutek0ld@reddit
The nation needs mandatory training for the purchase of firearms and common Sense gun laws to back that up.
Now I personally believe that just about anyone should be able to own just about anything provided they can demonstrate adequately that they are mentally and physically capable of safely keeping said weapon. My sense of responsibility has led me to have professional training on not only the firearms but the swords and the Bows I currently own. This is both for my safety and the safety of my wife and young children.
My example of this on a national scale would be the Swiss. They are trained in school how to safely handle a weapon. And one of my friends who is in their military has a legit fully automatic battle rifle at his house. Imagine if every high School required if not a full semester class, but at least a week-long training in firearm use and safety.
Not having a cool-off law, but instead legally requiring to register for a 4-Hour seminar, teaching you the basics of handling and cleaning your new Glock and then going back to the gun store and being able to demonstrate basic breakdown and weapon handling along with being able to describe how to safely store a firearm. Then going forward you have your Glock card so all you need to do is re-demonstrate at the time of purchase you still remember how to handle a Glock.
Saxit@reddit
This is false. You can get access to youth shooting if you want to though, but it's not part of the school curriculum.
GFEIsaac@reddit
mandatory training does not translate into better outcomes. And it's an infringement. You can force people to go, you cannot force them to care.
GadsdenSnek762@reddit
Built is not always better than bought.
UseACoasterJeez@reddit
I like to watch the YouTube videos from the School of the American Rifle guy to make me realize I don't have anywhere near the proper tools or knowledge to assemble my own AR-15 from quality parts. I'll just keep saving until I can get one of the known great but expensive ones.
WolfieAK@reddit
My recommendation is buy a stripped lower you like and the parts to finish it as you can and a decent complete upper. Unless you're looking for something specific there's not much reason to build your own upper. For the lower you only really need some Allen wrenches, a wrench for the castle nut on the buffer tube, a small vice and lower vice block, and maybe a hollow grind flathead. I've only needed my hollow grind screwdrivers for my old guns though. Just my opinion, and there's nothing wrong with buying a complete AR-15. The important thing is it's something you like, and it's safe to shoot.
ishootbow@reddit
As a guy that just changed out a bolt catch lever with a hammer and a screwdriver, please invest in proper roll pin punches if you plan on doing so. Don't be me. Did atleast get it in though...
WolfieAK@reddit
Oh, well I bought a set of anti-walk pins. They're basically just screws and nuts. I probably should invest in a set of bras punches though. I do have a set of steel ones, but I've read to not use them on roll pins.
marksman1023@reddit
How much did you spend learning this? This was an expensive lesson.

Lever guns should be more popular. I want a volcanic pistol goddammit.
woundedknee420@reddit

Menhadien@reddit
All the below are overrated.
PCCs Suppressors Lever actions Glock mods
Outrageous-Basis-106@reddit
But... have you shot a suppressed lever action 😉
gfen5446@reddit
Ugly "space cowboy" lever actions are overrated. The rifles themselves, especially in blue and wood, are timeless and beautiful and entirely functional.
ErikTheRed99@reddit
I don't know if I'd call a suppressor overrated. I already have tinnitus, I don't need more if I have to use my rifle inside my home.
Tactical_Epunk@reddit
They definitely aren't.
PlanktonSpiritual199@reddit
Yes they might be overrated however lever actions still look cool
Uptight_Internet_Man@reddit
I can understand lever actions for historical reasons but currently just seem over rated. I can't think of a more uncomfortable action.
DaPainfulTruth@reddit
Sounds like someone who doesn't have a PCC or suppressor...
kalash762x39@reddit
Pcc,gloves,shark fin dongs.
Menhadien@reddit
I have both.
My CZ scorpion Evo and a Zenith MP5 are both sbr'd even. But if I had to do it all over again I'd spend the money on other things. Of the two the MP5 gets way more range time.
I only have two cans, a Ti-rant 9 and Deadair Sandman S. I do want a dedicated 5.56 can like an OCL polo for my 11.5 ar.
I said overrated, not terrible.
Technical_Pain_4855@reddit
9mm is absolutely fine for brown and polar bears. And not just flat nose hardcast, but the jhp’s too, such as Winchester defender and ranger-t (the best JHP’s), HST (second best JHP’s), and critical duty. The 9mm and 10mm flat nose hardcast both go in a straight line for 86” in ballistic gel, but leave a relatively small wound channel and obviously not the biggest energy dump. A JHP would expand, and still go deep enough to hit the brain, and dump all it’s energy. They also penetrate very straight.
extortioncontortion@reddit
can it penetrate a bear skull if you don't have a great angle. That is the question. I'd rather not take the chance with non-hardcast.
GFEIsaac@reddit
the limited data agrees
Saint-Ecks-Isle@reddit
AR15/Glock is basic-bitch as fuck. As gun people, have some enthusiasm and run different shit.
Public-Second3763@reddit
.22 is a useless caliber:
"Oh, but you hunt small game with it."
There's are BB guns out there with the power to do that for cheaper
"I try to practice not flinching with it."
You aren't gonna flinching the same with a .22 as you would with a 9mm, 45acp, or 10mm. If you want to practice not flinching, practice it on the gun you're carrying
10mm is the superior cc caliber:
"9mm does the job for cheaper."
Yea, 9mm may be cheaper, but it's gonna be weaker. Do people not realize what meth does to your body. You feel like Superman. You feel like you can take on the world. If you get attacked by some meth head, they'll just stand back up and attack you again. You need 10mm for the extra knockdown power.
"10mm will overpenetrate."
That's why you get hollow points.
Pcc's are useless. Do you really think you need an 18" AR chambered in .22, 9mm, 45 ACP, or 10mm? Absolutely not.
GFEIsaac@reddit
You don't understand handgun calibers
Public-Second3763@reddit
If 9mm is so good, why did the FBI go from 9mm to 10mm.
politelydisagreeing@reddit
When most people ask for advice on buying a first gun, Striker fired guns are a terrible option. Most new gun owners aren't going to put in the time to get proficient with a gun or maintain it properly, they should be pointed to revolvers that are a lot better at handling being stuck in a drawer and forgotten.
ItCouldaBeenMe@reddit
Alright, that’s controversial. What do you think is going to happen if you toss a glock in a drawer and forget about it? Striker fired guns are idiot proof as far as function.
politelydisagreeing@reddit
Glocks are more prone to ftf issues from dust than revolvers. Not a high likelihood issue but more likely.
Similarly for people who are going to almost never touch their gun I don't like the potential for negligent discharge when cleaning a striker fired handgun. I think it's a small risk ultimately but there are plenty of stories even on this subreddit of people racking the slide then removing the mag instead of the correct order. In a lot of striker fired guns you put a hole in the wall when you make that mistake.
These are both 1/1000 issues but issues that are more likely to affect gun owners who buy a gun and mostly forget it exists.
Oak_Ranger@reddit
A couple hundred rounds is a better use of money than buying gizmos and gadgets for your gun
the_creature_258@reddit
A short barrel is always better.
DiamondbaccR@reddit
10mm is cool. I don't care if it's impractical compared to other calibers.
UTAHBASINWASTELAND@reddit
Shooters would benefit a lot from a little weight lifting.
StayStrong888@reddit
I would say cardio fitness
UTAHBASINWASTELAND@reddit
I don't disagree it would help but weight lifting even a little shows improvement in steadiness and reducing fatigue of holding firearms on target.
ErikTheRed99@reddit
I try cardio, but I never actually end up seeing any improvement with how far I can run.
StayStrong888@reddit
It's not how far it's how stable you can be after some exertion.
One of our drills is to be in full gear and run a few laps and do a few push ups. Then run the drill to see how your fitness affects your accuracy.
The worst one I've had to do was a full obstacle course where I had no strength to even lift my leg up over a 6" brick wall. Then I had to squeeze a trigger with both hands, left and right separately to see if I still had the strength to pull a trigger. I managed but it was hard to keep the sights straight.
That was an eye opener...
ErikTheRed99@reddit
I'm more just trying to get into shape right now than use cardio for training. I embarrassingly can't run for more than a few minutes currently without stopping. I can't do many pushups. I'm trying to figure out how to get out of this dogshit cardio I'm currently capable of.
Stellakinetic@reddit
It takes a while. I’ve gotten super in shape from running quite a few times in my life but if I quit for more than 6 months I nearly have to start over. It takes about 3-4 months of running almost every day to get back to where I can just run forever without getting winded.
Shamrock7325@reddit
Looking at you, Botkin
ssatyr01@reddit
.30 super carry should have been introduced differently. By now we should have been able to handle a few more small/carry units, there should have been some AFFORDABLE larger format choices as well...Heck, there should have been a single shot, a lever or two, maybe even a small revolver or two as well!
Unsaidbread@reddit
There are so many interesting cartridges that had horrible launches and advertising that would have been really cool if they actually caught on. 6.8 spc, 338 federal, 6.8 western (basically replaced by 277 fury/6.8x51, 458 socom etc to name a few

OleRockTheGoodAg@reddit
No sir, just the vernier tang sight.
SchuLace13@reddit
Once I realized I should buy because they are fun, my life changed.
TrilobiteTerror@reddit
Exactly. There are seemingly many people who get bent out of shape over certain guns just because it's not something they personally have a practical purpose for.
They act as if someone's trying to forcibly replace their carry gun with it.
I've with the Bond Arms Bullpup, the Full Conceal folding Glocks, the Third Bay Ounce pistol, etc.
As long as it's safe and functions, it's okay if it's just cool/interesting. Also, innovative is an iterative process. It's good for companies to try crazy new things, because there's no telling where it might lead down the line or how it might be improved upon.
shadowkiller@reddit
I like bullpups.
WolfieAK@reddit
I too like Bob Marley guns.
One_Activity3309@reddit (OP)
I’ve thought about getting one tbh. Any recommendations?
SniperSRSRecon@reddit
Ksg/ks7, rfb (finicky with ammo, but gas block is very adjustable), srs recon (good luck affording it though). As much as keltec gets shit on, their bullpups have some of the best triggers.
Stay as far away as you can from the uts15, calling trash is an insult to trash.
GreatTea3@reddit
Yea, but if you buy the MDR, you’re supporting creepy Mormon cult people.
SniperSRSRecon@reddit
True, but cool gun is cool gun.
GreatTea3@reddit
Nah, I’m ok with most kinds of controversy from gun companies. But those folks come with a real high possibility of child molestation and forced marriages with children. I don’t want my money to go to them.
Stellakinetic@reddit
They all mostly seem really genuinely happy (even the women) for that to be such a high incidence case. I guess it could just be from programming & indoctrination, but idk. You think they’d all just leave if it was that bad. I understand some of them are probably held under pretty strict watch (this is total presumption) but there are A LOT of Mormons that do as they please.
SniperSRSRecon@reddit
They have tendrils in a lot of Utah companies. Not saying your point is invalid, just stating a fact.
GreatTea3@reddit
I don’t know any other Utah based gun companies, so I can’t say anything about that. I just know the guy who owns the company is creepy as shit and I don’t want any business with him or his organization. And for whoever downvoted me, I have no problem with your regular, run of the mill Mormons. I really don’t care what religion a person holds with. But there are fringe groups that are absolute scum, and Desert Tech is connected with those people.
shadowkiller@reddit
The X95 is a good one. It solves most of the problems that people complain about with bullpups. Give it a Geissele trigger and the only real downside is shooting lefty will eject brass pretty close to your face.
Stellakinetic@reddit
I found that getting a free floated handguard helps with accuracy as well. The blklbl handguards are awesome
AnthonyPantha@reddit
x95 is the best bullpup on the market IMO. Easy disassemble and clean, built in irons in the rails, rails on all 4 sides that are easily customized, easy trigger pack change. It just does everything bullpups have been complained about for except barrel changes.

Cops in ban states should be subject to the same restrictions
CaptJoshuaCalvert@reddit
Hell yes to this. I'm a huge LE supporter, but I do not support LE exemptions from prevailing firearms laws.
Stellakinetic@reddit
If that were the case, there would be very few gun laws. It would be nice if when the cops went to bat for their own they were also batting for the entire populous. This would also probably help with police relations.
ricochet845@reddit
Both on and off duty! I’ve been of the same oppinion since the ny UNsafe act came out in 2012/2013, the cops statewide flipped their shit cause no exemption was carved out for them cause it was rammed down the resident of the states throats by force at like 11-12 at night and no one (shockingly) read the damn thing, so cops bitched and got an exemption carved out for both on and off duty. They’re immune to all the firearm laws in NY. Wanna talk about a protected class. (Obviously federal laws still apply but they’re the only ones in ny who can get anything cl-3/nfa level so still got that exemption on the state level)
bren97122@reddit
SAFE Act made me realize cops can talk on and on about how they’re all for the Second Amendment but will enforce the most draconian gun laws in America all day long, so long as they get an exemption.
definitelynotpat6969@reddit
I'm lucky, my local sheriff flat out refuses to enforce state bans. Thus resulting in my LGS completely ignoring said laws.
Stellakinetic@reddit
This is awesome. Some modern day Wild West shit. I wish there was more of this “renegade local government” stuff going on.
ricochet845@reddit
Lucky bastard.
ricochet845@reddit

No_Seat_4959@reddit
I disagree. Those same cops rarely agree to the restrictions, no reason to punish them for it.
Verum14@reddit
They chose to enforce it — they are complicit
David_Shagzz@reddit
Only reason I don’t agree with this, is if I’m in a situation where an illegal item that a cop is certified to use, and is needed in that situation, I’d much prefer it over something more “censored.”
Shawn_1512@reddit
If a cop needs something to defend themselves, every other citizen should be able to obtain it.
David_Shagzz@reddit
Not saying I disagree with your statement. Just saying, if it’s an ordeal where I can’t own it in general, then at least for the sake of my safety and my family’s, I’d feel a lot more comfortable knowing I’d have that backup with law enforcement. Downvote all you want, but at the end of the day, If I can’t protect the ones I love the way I want, then taking it away from law enforcement isn’t doing anything but making a stupid “my rights” insecurity movement and giving family’s even less security. I don’t care if you don’t agree. Of course I want to obtain and keep my gun rights as I please. But I can’t do a damn thing about it, then I at least deserve the reassurance that someone can. Gun rights are a given and cannot be taken away. But that doesn’t mean people won’t try. All this shit isn’t doing anything but leaving law abiding citizens more defenseless. The way I used to be, I’d say come and take it, and physically defend my rights and worry about jail later. But now I have too much to lose. If that makes me an idiot in the eyes of the “equal rights” movement comparing cops to citizens, then so be it. I’d rather not be able to buy my favorite gun and stay home supporting my family vs rotting in jail knowing my children won’t remember their father by anything other than a puppet behind a window vs. trying to be Billy badass, playing “who’s dick is bigger” with the same people trying to take both my second amendment as well as my family away from me because I made a protesting move.

This. At any level.
No full auto for cops. Cops have to deal with every last thing locals getting a permit have to deal with. Everything.
We have to deal with the threat first. If they're rolling Code 3, someone already had to deal with a violent threat. We get the same tools.

We are not a democracy that values the second amendment if there's only two options, one wants to take our guns, and the other only sometimes wants to take our guns.
I would have voted Kamala had it not been for the calls to ban and confiscate ARs. Regardless of whether you agree with voting for her or not, I would hope you can recognize that having that decision made by this 2-party bullshit isn't right.
Red_Shepherd_13@reddit
You don't need to try and justify owning an AR-15 or another similar rifle by claiming it's for home defense or hunting. You can use them for these roles, but you don't need to jump into every subreddit to say the AR-15 is the best hunting or home defense weapon. They're not. They do the job okay, but they're not the best.
The AR-15 is the best anti-tyranny gun, rivaled and questioned only by the kalashnikov and that's the only "justification" you need to have one, not that you need to justify having 2A rights.
Also shotguns are better for home defence. Home defence means in your home. Homes are small close quarters areas with small rooms and short hallways. Unless you live in a mansion, then by all means use a Vulcan mini-gun if you feel like it.
And you're dealing with a home intruder, like a robber, a murderer with a grudge, a rioter in a hoodie, or a crack addicted schizophrenic who was told your guts have free drugs in them by the voices in their head. They don't have a vest or plate carrier, they have a knife, a pistol or hacked up ghetto blaster, or some other improvised weapon. If they do, or you have a serious gangs or rioter problem where multiple assailants with bullet proof vest and rifles plagues your streets, by all means ignore me and get the rifles out, but more than likely that's not home defense anymore, that's war, or your fighting the feds, and that's an anti-tyranny situation anyways.
You aren't in a prolonged fire fight, you have a very short period of time before they either shoot you first, shoot you back, or are on you grabbing your gun with one hand and shivving you with the other. So it's better to fire off 1 or 2 shots of buckshot, and have 4 - 8 in the tube or mag then to fire one or two rounds of 5.56 and have 28 rounds left in the mag while being tackled and stabbed to death by a very angry crack addict.
There's no getting around it, firing 9x 9 millimeter pellets is faster and more efficient at eliminating a threat at close range than 1, 5.56 round at a time.
Home defence is by nature a close quarters short engagement scenario where range and armor aren't factors. So the shotgun is better. Not a fudd for pointing these very obvious points out.

You still need back up sights.
More money spent does not mean better.
You need to learn the basics first before you get all the cool guy stuff.
You do not need to keep up with the social media influencer. They’re shills.
The average cop and military member suck at shooting.
Learn how to properly sight in your firearm and properly clean it.
You may laugh at the last two but while in the Army on my second contract as a 91F, I was horrified with how many people still could not sight in their issued weapon or clean it.
Cheeseninja26@reddit
I second that notion that the average military member sucks... I'll be on med coverage at a lot of ranges, and it's almost comical to watch, if not just sad.
roaming_art@reddit
Liberal gun owners are temporary gun owners.
Cheeseninja26@reddit
Me and my father are both lifelong gun owners. I think the both of us could be considered pretty "liberal"
roaming_art@reddit
I'm pretty socially liberal myself, however I don't vote for candidates like Kamala how openly call for mandatory confiscation of 20+ million legal firearms. Seems like a majority of the U.S. agreed as well.
LPdecay009@reddit
Also, sudden gun owners. Aka “A house down the street just got broken into and i suddenly feel like I need a gun for protection, even though I’ve been telling everyone that’s what the cops are for”
CaptJoshuaCalvert@reddit

Also the forward assist has a use.
If you disagree in absolutes, your opinion is probably a received opinion.
Stellakinetic@reddit
It funny because I never use the forward assist on my AR, but there are tons of other guns I wish had forward assists. I also wish the forward assist worked on my AR-22

An AR looks like an AR. Some look like they have Christmas ornaments on them, but an AR looks like every other AR.
Stellakinetic@reddit
I used to think this. Once you get the ‘tism though and know specifically every brand of each part just by looking at it, you can never see them as the same again. It’s like thinking all pine trees look the same, unless you’re an arborist.
gravity_loss@reddit
The Ruger 10/22 is not that great of a rifle, especially for beginners. Beginners don't need a rifle that needs a bunch of new parts just to function properly and they shouldn't be customizing or upgrading their first gun. They need to learn how to fire a rifle without introducing new variables between each range session.
cowboy3gunisfun@reddit
Night sights are only good for finding your gun on the nightstand
drkling@reddit
Can you expand on this? In low light training/practice guns without night sights are basically unusable for anything but point shooting.
cowboy3gunisfun@reddit
If it's dark enough to see the glow sights, it's too dark to properly identify your target. You're better off with standard sights and a weapon light.
navypiggy1998@reddit
People who shoot competitions with competition specific gear are missing out/missing the point. For starters the main point of a competition is its fun, and having your equipment do all the heavy lifting is not near as fun as purposely shooting with an impractical set up. (The most fun I've had with pants on was the 3 gun I shot last weekend with an m1 garand, trench gun and 1911a1). A secondary benefit is also training, in which case I feel like it's a disservice to ones self to use Gucci competition gear over practical combat gear. When I'm not running my ww2 load out I usually run my gwot set up (m16a4 or m4a1, benelli m4, and m9) because it's a practical combat trio.
borg2@reddit
AR-15's are a dime a dozen and suck ass because of it. I'd rather have something more original looking.
Queefer_the_Griefer@reddit
Personal preference, but here’s mine
Modern guns like Glocks and AR-15s are nice and definitely the most practical for defense, but historical guns like revolvers, lever guns, milsurp bolt guns, and black powder are so much more FUN.
Uptight_Internet_Man@reddit
My dad gave me the single shot 410 I learned how to shoot with, it's still so much fun.
manieldunks@reddit
She stepped out in the alley with a single shot 410

Queefer_the_Griefer@reddit

THE-RigilKent@reddit
Well, even if I end up buying one ‐ no, dammit! You're trying to pay off that damned card! - it would just be because weapons like that are just. So. Cool.
Heck, I'm not even sure if the gun range I go to allows blackpowder firearms...
thatgymdude@reddit
I totally agree, my most fun was shooting a 357 Desert Eagle and a HK MP5 with a can on it. The MP5 is from the 60s and you still to this day cannot find a more enjoyable gun to shoot over and over. It does not even matter the skill level of the shooter, I have seen people who have never shot a gun before love the MP5 and have a great time with it. That is saying something that in 60 years of firearm progression no one has made a PCC that will beat it.
MarryYouInMinecraft@reddit
Glock grip angle is virtually identical to a 1911A1 with an arched mainspring housing, and people who complain about it just can't shoot without a nice 1911 trigger.
No one complains about the Walther GSP grip angle.
dragonsuns@reddit
It's not the grip angle really, it's the hump at the bottom of the grip that forces the muzzle up slightly. People just say grip angle because they either don't understand that it's the hump, or have to angle their wrist slightly forward in comparison to other pistols.
Marky-Man@reddit
Glocks are overrated
MintyFresh1201@reddit
I gotta ask why! I think they’re the best, so simple and reliable
benmarvin@reddit
Glocks are iPhones. Maybe innovative and all that at first, but riding on that wave when alternatives can do more for cheaper.
MintyFresh1201@reddit
I get what you’re saying. What alternatives do you think are better?
blank_dota2@reddit
I really like the CZ P10 series and S&W M&P 2.0 series. Both have better ergos, triggers, grip texture, and price than Glock typically. A P10C can be had for $329 all the time brand new. I paid $399 for my brand new M&P 2.0.
I don’t hate glocks, but buying one when there are alternatives is a bit odd. They really are the Corolla/iphone SE of the gun world IMO.
TheWhiteCliffs@reddit
Subpar ergonomics being the top. A CZ P-10C for example is a $100-200 cheaper than a Glock 19 and has a better fitting grip, better sights, and better trigger.
northernredneck77@reddit
Just to play devils advocate, wouldn’t ergonomics be a personal preference? I carry a glock 43x because the ergonomics fit my hand. At 28 years old I had to switch from right to left handed pistol shooting and the 43x is the first pistol I picked up left handed and it felt right
TheWhiteCliffs@reddit
I just can’t see how a rectangle shaped grip can be ergonomic for anyone. Yes it is personal preference but I think the majority of people would say ergos is not glock’s strong suit.

I'd extend that to owning firearms. While constitutionally everyone has the right to bear arms some people shouldn't be allowed that right plain and simple. Depends. If I just like shooting pistols, I'd rather have a S&W 41 and a Nighthawk anything than five Glocks.
Hell yes, Glocks are overrated. The Toyota Corolla of guns. Does what it does, and deserves respect for that, but I personally find them to be totally soulless.
StayStrong888@reddit
PCCs with 4-6" barrels are just PDWs.
PCCs with up to 12" barrels are sweet subguns.
PCCs with 16" barrels exist because of our laws.
marksman1023@reddit
I prefer the 8-9" format of fullsize MPX and, of course, MP5. A package that small in 9mm makes a lot of sense to me as a home defense gun (pretty much proving your point about PDWs).
StayStrong888@reddit
Thanks to our laws i have a Recover Tactical and a MCK for my Glocks to make them into PDWs.

I just got on the Flux Raider train for P320. Every time I pop the brace out I hear the two tones of brass from the Bond soundtrack. "Hmmm-HM!"
StayStrong888@reddit
Flux is not ca legal thanks to them being afraid the front mag holder makes it super deadly.
StayStrong888@reddit
Agreed. I don't think a pistol cartridge made for fast burning in a 4-5" barrel would be optimal in a 16" barrel.
If I'm going full 16-20" I'll take a rifle cartridge designed for it.
marksman1023@reddit
Same basic thought process.
9mm gets a velocity bump in a longer barrel than 3-4", but there's diminishing returns the longer you go.

Wood swells and needs far more care than polymer. Tactical is far more useful.
AR15s are probably the best defensive option a moderately trained person can get.
Recoil equals power was true in the days of Black Powder and Nitro Express. If you need a heavy recoiling gun to kill something you actually need better shot placement and better bullets.
.40 S&W does nothing that a hotter 9mm can't already do for less money.

TrilobiteTerror@reddit
Not every gun has to be 100% perfectly practical, high-speed low-drag and perfect designed for tactical purposes. It's okay for some to just be cool, fun, innovative, interesting, etc.
Ultimately, functioning as intended and being safe are what matter.
Guns like the Full Conceal folding Glocks And Third Bay Ounce pistols don't deserve the hate they received. Some people seemingly take offense with anything they perceive as suboptimal (as if they're being forced to replace their carry gun with it). People also have difficulty imagining uses for things that are outside of their own personal use case.
The Full Conceal folding Glocks and the Third Bay Ounce pistols are interesting and innovative in what they do differently/what separates them from other pistols (especially in how they completely change the form factor when being carried or stowed away and make using a holster unnecessary). In that way, they're interesting and innovative designs.
People seem to forget that innovation is an iterative process (you never know what will lead to what down the line). This is especially true of firearms (just think of all the janky early auto-loaders that were invented and tinkered with).
I hope some company picks up the Full Conceal folding Glock design/rights (similar to Bond Arms acquiring the Boberg pistol design/rights). Their failing was being a horribly run company (not because of their product).
Humdrum_Blues@reddit

Mostly I go with the Smith and Wesson M&P series. I don't dislike Glocks, but if I'm choosing a pistol for practicality, I'm at least picking a M&P over a Glock because I'd be paying less for a gun that looks better, has higher capacity for its size, has a better trigger from the factory, and still has the reliability that I want. When I start getting the money, I'd like to branch out to companies like Walther and CZ to see how I like them, but right now I want something that I have trigger time with, and also doesn't feel like it's just slightly more expensive than it needs to be.

The best gun for personal defense is the reliable one that you can shoot well.
It doesn't matter how much money you spend on a gun, if you can't shoot it accurately under duress, it's of little value. Money can buy a lot of things, skill isn't one of them.
Larry with his S&W Model 36 he's shot every weekend for the past 26 years (except for his anniversary, Barb insisted) is probably going to be more effective with 5 rounds than Tanner who bought a Shadow Systems MR920 and took it to the range once when he bought it.
HOWEVER, people who "poor cope" by buying the cheapest possible thing and rarely shooting it are the worst of all. I often see claims of people who bought the absolute cheapest gun they could and claim they have 5,000 rounds through it, when in reality the gun rarely sees a box of ammo every 6 months. It's okay to not have money for ammo, it's okay to not be able to afford a super nice gun, but it's not okay to buy cheap and claim it's "just as good".
marksman1023@reddit
Came here to basically say this. Someone who bought an M1 Carbine or a Coonan Magnum for self defense isn't wrong. Do I think there are better tools for defense? Sure. But if someone buys an M1 Carbine because they like it and want to shoot it, they're gonna be way more effective than the guy with an AK and a spam can under the bed they've never even taken apart.
