And specifically white collared shirts, in the summer.
I only wear suites now to funerals and weddings (and sometimes not weddings). Although the last time I wore a suite with a white collared shirt was at a graveside funeral in 100+ degrees. Fortunately it didn’t last long.
Nah… I can’t do a vest in the summer it’s too hot here. Best you get from me is a jacket, pants, and tie.
Only exceptions were my own wedding and a few best friends I was a groomsman for and fortunately my friends are all smart enough to have their weddings in the fall.
So many jobs used to require ties; it was insane. I work in a field that can easily permanently stain clothing and we just went away from ties & nice shirts recently.
We also sweat more back then due to the heavier collared shirts and less air conditioning. So you could easily turn a nice white shirt into a white and yellowed shirt.
This is also why we split clothes into whites and colors - whites got bleached frequently.
Gee, I wonder if us removing cigarettes from everywhere indoors has something to do with brownish stains disappearing from white shirts on business men and workers who spend a lot of time in that environment.
Yup. I saw this on my shirt and started actively spending extra time cleaning my neck. But living in NYC, it’s also just the dirt/exhaust in the air combined with sweat waiting on a 98 degree subway platform
Yeah all the people who think it's cuz of just dirty necks haven't worked in downtown Chicago on a hot humid sweltering summer day. Don't matter how clean your neck was at 7am...
Lol I live in Seoul, a city with 10 million people and 10 million in the suburbs. I just read Chicago has 2 million people. That barely qualifies as a city here.
I don't know what a "loop" is. It sounds precious tho. You must feel like a real big city fella, eh.
My dad wore a shirt and tie to work every day. I have clear memories of separating his shirts out so I could pretreat the collars over the laundry sink. I'd add a little soap and water, scrub it against itself like crazy, and then toss it in the washing machine.
THEN, I still had to iron all of those shirts and his handkerchiefs. The handkerchiefs were ironed and folded (then pressed again to hold the fold) before stacking them to put in his dresser drawer.
He also wore undershirts, and those had to be ironed too.
Anyway, seeing a bottle of Wisk always brings that back.
No they didn’t wipe it out but they discovered that ring around the collar protects you from bot flies, so now it’s okay. Everyone loves ring around the collar now.
Housewives used to launder their husband's dress shirts. Now people can't afford to be stay at home spouses. So if you must wear button up shirts, you probably take them to a dry-cleaners.
Very mildly interesting anecdote: Was a marketing major (early 90s) and took an advertising class where my teacher let us know, at least half a dozen times, that he came up with this campaign.
No one stating the obvious? Way less indoor smoking. A little sweat, some dead skin, and the residue of tobacco smoke coating everything led to some wild innovations in cleaning that don’t quite translate in a post OxyClean world. Billy Mays Bless.
Don't worry, we're bringing that back. Just gotta trash the EPA and Clean Air and Water Act. It's so close I can taste it! We can always buy another planet!
It was like the hole in the ozone layer; the world joined together and put wisk in every laundry room, and within a few decades ring around the collar was no longer an issue.
Sadly, it’s still a very real thing. I don’t sweat much at all, and I shower every morning, and it’s still a thing to struggle with if you wear collared shirts daily for work.
New-Anacansintta@reddit
Wisk gets ring around the collar…and your whole wash clean!
My brain is 80% full of 80s commercials.

A lot more people used to wear collared shirts!
ghostinawishingwell@reddit
Also the old fabric was much heavier.
pegothejerk@reddit
We also changed materials - cotton was easier to stain, now we largely have plastic hybrid materials, much harder to stain accidentally.

No. We just don't wear white dress shirts that often anymore.
When I did, as part of my work uniform, I did in fact have to put detergent on the inside collar before washing it. I have oily skin and it got nasty.
