What are we doing about the obviously rapidly growing road rage problem?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub, also don't want to come across like I'm just complaining. I see this ongoing problem that is RAPIDLY growing (at least in my areas?) of road rage getting worse and worse. 5 years ago, you'd hear OCCASIONALLY about a road rage incident that ended with something violent. Now, I bet you I could find an example every single day of physically violent road rage, in my city of 75k-ish. I live in a fairly average (I think) American city, I'd figure this is probably the same everywhere, at least in America. Seems like every time I get on the road, there is a collection of bad drivers, and people that are mad at the bad drivers and want to prove that to them by any means necessary.
Again, this isn't me complaining though. I guess what I really want to know is what, if anything, is being done about this problem? The roads are busier today than ever, more people are driving than ever, and they are driving worse than ever. I haven't met anybody that doesn't agree. What is the "big plan" to fix this problem? I'm not saying that it has to work but I've just honestly never even seen any real government acknowledgment of this problem. Maybe I'm thinking too deep into it, but I just feel like this seems like an obvious thing to try to fix, as a politician, even if its just to get votes. Saying "I have a plan to fix the road rage and driving problem that you all deal with" would certainly put some people in your corner, I'd think. Again, probably thinking too deep into it. I just feel like I get on Reddit every day, or get on the road, and see WILD stuff, yet never any real solution to the problem. What is it? Or are we just continuing down this path until things get worse?

I think they are going to get rid of all the timid drivers. They cause the most issues with their idiocy and lack of driving ability. Slowing down to pass a semi truck. Not entering a roundabout until the entire thing is empty.

I ignore them. It’s not worth my energy or my life. Plus I have a SO & a 3 year old son who need me.
If you make eye contact with a rager, that tells them you’re up for a challenge. People have gotten pulled out of their cars to get beaten or shot at.
BG_ONZ_23@reddit
How about better infrastructure for public transportation ?🤷🏽♂️
DesertStorm480@reddit
"Road Rage" isn't typically an issue that starts on the road, many people live very angry unfulfilling lives, not sure what the solution there is.
TheFriendlyDollar@reddit (OP)
This seems like the truth. I feel like they could even take away the driving entirely, and these are the type of people that will just move onto the next petty thing to angrily obsess over.
And you’re right, this somehow seems like an even harder problem to have a solution for
Similar-Try6082@reddit
I think the big trucks up on lifts that these ragers drive should be taken away or modified. Just a matter of time before they are genuinely considered a deadly weapon. Why does any one need a huge truck for passenger use? (Why does anyone need an AR rifle or a Kalashnikov)
Sprzout@reddit
Because they want it. If you tell someone they can't have it, they want it.
Tell them they can't have a big truck and their reaction is, "F U! I'll own it JUST because it pissed you off!"

I had a bigggg truck on a lift come down on me then cut me off, jumped out yanking on my car door. FOR WHAT??? Narcissism at it's finest Could have killed us. But got him on my cam. Still had to back up and run while on the phone with the police.

Came here to say this. It's not about driving. It's a societal issue. Focus of narcissism and lack of community in the US. Your neighbor will literally road rage you and then you have to follow them back to your home.
Similar-Try6082@reddit
word. happened to me. Young gentleman, a student at the University of Arkansas. Big truck on a lift with Texas plates. Have reported him twice for raging me and almost hitting me (grandma) with two toddlers in the back seat. Has no respect for double yellow lines, speed limit (races over the speed bumps) (passes two cars and a school bus while letting kids off)
I find that most of the raging is BULLYING, just these kids general demeanor, in a big truck. These trucks are dangerous, a lot like a gun, It's the dude behind the wheel with a small brain, bad attitude and copious amount of narcissism. Take these trucks away and see how tough these idiots are.
I have been cut off and had to stand my car on its nose to keep from hitting the back of the rager as he is now in front of me. Gets out screaming at me because he can't drive yanking on my car door handle like what is he going to do to grandma and her two 6 yo old grandsons if he got it opened?? Kids were terrified.
So i reach for my little S&W, tap it on the window and take his picture through the glass. I think he thought he was shot because of the flash. I drove around him with 911 on the line. He followed me all the way across town to my condo, but I didn't park at my place... he pulled up behind me, blocking me in, but the police were there by then. His truck was towed and he went away in cuffs. Little bitty guy lol
Have been raged since then, but have a dash cam and a larger calibre. Most importantly I AVOID any type of confrontation but these two were young men in bigggg trucks.

People are mad about the state of things in general in the us. Many people don't have a proper outlet, and take it out on everything else. When 2 angry people meet, there's generally a beef even if it's over something minor. Combine that with the fact nearly everyone in America drives, and sees all the mistakes others make while ignoring most of their own, boom angry feud on the roads more and more often.
ZotMatrix@reddit
Road rage starts before a rager even gets in the car.

Honestly I feel like road rage reflects the way people are currently feeling in their life. And I could be totally wrong about this but I think with the state of the economy and how much people are struggling financially, they are very stressed and it is leading to road rage. This is totally just a thought though
GlockHolliday32@reddit
Just ignore them. That's what I'm doing. Rarely do I run into anything crazy. If someone cuts me off, I don't even honk. Just thankful it didn't cause an accident and I'm on my way.
Antmax@reddit
There is probably some correlation with attention disorders. People get frustrated focusing on one thing and/or are easily distracted. Want to be somewhere else pronto. Just don't have the patience or care about rules when they are bored and want stimulation.
TheFriendlyDollar@reddit (OP)
Feel like you’re describing a toddler lol
It’s wild to me that these people drive machines man
BackThatThangUp@reddit
I’ll be honest and say I’m one of those people that lacks the patience to get through most drives without getting angry. It bugs me on an innate, primal level when people refuse to drive with the flow of traffic and when people pull moves without being aware of their surroundings
Similar-Try6082@reddit
Driving with the flow of traffic is great IF it's the speed limit or under. People think that just because you are in the flow you're legal BUT ask any law enforcement officer and they will tell you differently. They will also tell you about the idiots that think it's ok to determine their own speed limit, because they think it's safe, even though the sign says 20 mph they'll double that.
If you are over the speed limit you are SPEEDING and I refuse to go with the flow if it's over the limit. I'm that person that will pace the next 20 cars behind me if it's the law.
YOU are the problem and need a driving class that explains the law. That you are not above
TheFriendlyDollar@reddit (OP)
I think that's the normal part though, the problematic part is when people start acting on those feelings and then you have the issues you see today.
I think it'd be really hard to get on the road and not feel exactly how you said.
BackThatThangUp@reddit
That just seems like a terrible system, to me though, one where everyone is constantly pissed by its normal functioning. You’re pretty much guaranteed to be a hair’s width away from someone losing their shit on any given day.
TheFriendlyDollar@reddit (OP)
Definitely a terrible system, and ends up making a loop with more road rage. That's kind of why I was hopeful/curious when I made this post, but unfortunately, everyone has told me what I already know.
People suck 😞
Man0fGreenGables@reddit
You would be amazed if you could somehow see people’s emotional ages. The world is full of adult toddlers and it seems to be getting worse at a rapid rate.
Automatic-Will-7836@reddit
I get pretty angry pretty frequently while driving, and it's almost always because someone is driving ridiculously slow or someone sped up just to cut me off and then drive slow when there was plenty of space behind me. All I do is swear at them, so it's not like I'm acting dangerously, but I'm constantly battling the urge. I don't need to get somewhere "pronto." I just would like it if people would drive, you know, the speed limit? So I can get where I'm going on time? Plus gas is way too expensive now for me to burn it crawling behind an idiot. Frankly, I don't care if someone has issues that contribute to them driving poorly -- if you can't drive well, and you know it, you should probably stay off the road, and if you can't, at least stay in the right lanes.

I've noticed in the past 10 years that people in/around Charlotte have gotten to the point where I refuse to go near the city. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police don't pull cars for speeding, no tags, fake tags, running red lights or anything else. It has become a free for all on the roads around here. I know of several people that got pulled over for no tag/registration, no insurance, no license and they give them a ticket, then let them drive away. There isn't any accountability for the drivers or owners of vehicles anymore and I think it just adds more to the problem.

I see it becoming an issue due the extreme amount of drivers that can't drive....5 years ago people knew how to drive. Seems the past 5 years they have been handing them out (licenses) left and right and it is CLEAR some of these people have no clue how to drive properly and thus start road rage.
No-Boysenberry-5581@reddit
What is it that you would want done? Have cops drive around looking for ppl That look tense or angry? Road rage stems from rage in the rest of people’s lives
JoeCensored@reddit
People need to stop responding to others on the road. The vast majority of road rage incidents involve two assholes who won't back down.
Someone cuts you off, so you have to pull alongside to flip him off, then the other guy is screaming and swerving, etc.
If someone cuts you off, or is a dick, just let it go. You don't need to prove you're just as big a dick.
thackeroid@reddit
That's true but what if you didn't even do anything. I passed someone the other day. A few seconds later he decides he's going to speed up and ride my tail. Then he pulls around and starts cursing at me. Said I cut him off. But if I cut him off he would have had to slow down or use his brakes, and he didn't. He was texting and was irritated that I got in front of him. Then he starts saying he's going to knock my teeth out. Something okay I'll get out I'll mix it up with this guy. Then he starts telling me he's going to follow me home he's going to follow me home and it was totally ready to go at him but then I thought to myself I don't know what drugs he's on, I don't know if he's got a gun, or a knife or anything else, and I hadn't even done anything to this guy and yet one of us could possibly end up dead. So I took a quick turn that he missed and I got on a different street and drove somewhere else. Still bugs me several days later though. Cuz part of me wishes I would have gotten out of the car and beaten his ass.
Similar-Try6082@reddit

Been raged twice; like dangerously raged. Cut off by the rager where I was blocked in, couldn't move cars behind me... Started with his finger and his horn. As awesome as it would be to see them shit their pants when they roll up on your armed wife, the problem is that they now know where you live, and road ragers are petty psychos, I wouldn't want them knowing where I live.
A similar solution would be to just drive to your nearest police station, that'll get the unhinged lunatic to leave, and if not, well you get a fun show when an officer has him on the ground in handcuffs

I had a guy follow me for about twenty minutes a few months ago. I'm still genuinely not sure what he was mad at. Empty road in the middle of the day when everyone's at work or school and I'm going the speed limit in the right lane when all the sudden this truck pulls up to a red light next to me, guy glaring at me and telling me to roll my window down. Light turns and he's getting angrier, and by the next red light he's S C R E A M I N G. I roll my window down a little and get a blast of "SLOWTHEFUCKDOWNWHYTHEFUCKAREYOUGOINGSOFAST-" Before I just roll the window back up. He followed me for almost twenty minutes of me doing my best to ignore him, nearly hitting me and trying to run me off the road, and only drove off when he noticed that I was pulling us towards a police station. So even if you just ignore em, some people are just full of rage. Scary out there.
Rocksen96@reddit
tolerating their behavior is exactly what's been going on and it's exactly why there has been a rise in road rage. they are not being punished, so they feel they can do as they please and so they do.
JoeCensored@reddit
I'm not talking about tolerating, but whatever you think you're doing in response is counter productive.
Godeshus@reddit
I can't stress this enough. When I was learning how to drive 20 something years ago my dad told me the only thing you need to worry about is the car in front of you, because if shit goes down, that's what you're hitting.
I drive with a minimum safe distance in front of me. If someone wants to be a douche rocket all around me they're free to do so. I'll keep tabs on them, but I always make sure to leave space in front. If it comes to an accident, at least it won't be my insurance footing the bill.

While everyone seems angry or probably just is. There was a marked drop in good drivers or even just passable drivers since the pandemic. So many people can't pull up to lights because they don't know where the front of their car is. And think you cut them off with a car length to spare. I'm not saying people were great before. But when all of normie 9 to 5 people came back to the office. It felt like a herd of drunks for a solid year and slowly improved from there. And being around this nonsense is enough to make a man scream.
Robborboy@reddit
The start would be reducing need for cars.
Tons of people absolute hate driving. They hate the traffic. They hate the risk from other people. They hate buying gas, paying for insurance, paying for the car, all because society decided to build in a way hostile to people. All the while pretty much being required to even etch out a life.
DDM11@reddit
More and more population growth causing more crowded roads, lack of maintaining roads/superstructures make driving increasingly dangerous. Not likely to improve.

You can address the road rage issue by staying out of the fucking way.
That'll handle 75% of road ragers. The other 25% are those that don't mind going 10 below the limit in the far left lane alongside someone on the highway and holding up a line of traffic but take offense to being passed, and I don't know what to do about them.

Kinda reminds me of the aggression when lead was introduced in everything and then you had a societal uptick in aggression, curious what the common denominator is. Maybe lead is making a comeback with all of this chinese manufacturing and increasingly lax regulatory policies.
dug99@reddit
This seems to be an almost universal problem, but there are common factors - a well-documented increase in risky driving behaviour post-pandemic, increased drug and alcohol consumption and an associated increase in dependency, and a dramatic decline in police personel because new recruits are not keeping up with retirements and resignations anymore. The final piece of the puzzle is a decline in cognitive abilities due to multiple COVID infections. Google that precise term, and you might be slightly shocked. This problem is not going away anytime soon...
MDCB_1@reddit
Many factors at play. No easy solution. This might be related to a heady mix of post pandemic stress disorder, social media addiction, poor diet and uncertainty in the world [And the Age of Aquarius some might have us believe]. Eliminate online drivers education. Seriously. Make all license applicants (regardless of age) take actual brick-and- mortar driver's education, in person. Classes should only be held live, with a normal human being teaching these classes.
Left_coast916@reddit
The real problem is the mode of instruction used for drivers education - why does it need to be made exclusively online? By that logic it makes the stakeholders - ie, teen drivers - not want to take any of the information seriously enough to want to give a shit about consequences regarding shitty driving behaviors.

better mental health recognition and assistance.
Immediate-Shape-2957@reddit
The laws are already established. We know how we are supposed to drive. There is already a solution - follow the laws. The problem is that more and more people are disregarding the laws, thinking “it doesn’t matter”. It is the overarching attitude towards rules and regulations that contributes to this issue. The same thing happens at every job I have ever worked at. Oh that policy “doesn’t matter.” Of course… until it finally does matter and it is too late.
In terms of enforcing the law, I highly recommend some criminal justice courses at a university. I took a few and for the sake of anonymity, the course I took was incredibly eye opening about our criminal justice system and everything our society is doing to keep things under control and peaceful. It is quite impressive. It made me rethink the citizens who break minor laws. They are quite clueless how fragile our system is, how much work goes into maintaining the system, and how important it is to respect and follow the laws for these reasons. Yes, even the ones you chose to temporarily bypass because it “did not matter”. It takes an immense amount of sacrifice from our society to maintain order so that we can enjoy our freedoms.
Also, I highly recommend taking advantage of all educational resources around you. I recommend getting into a high paying job if you are not already into one. You will have access to living in neighborhoods where people do not play around about that shit. HOAs are everywhere in these neighborhoods.
The internet likes to criticize “Karens”. The stereotype seems to refer to well to do older white women. Note, most of their neighborhoods don’t have all this bullshit in them. Like rampant speeding. “Karens” speak up and do something about it. People have really become embarrassed to speak up and out about wrongdoing around them. It takes brave people to speak up and protect our communities. Look, some of the videos can get ridiculous, but standing up for what’s right is a skill. It takes time to learn how to deal with the pressure. This is why we see some people absolutely imploding. And of course people focus on ad hominems instead of the real issue… the person was standing up for what’s right.
These are my thoughts. Good luck out there.

Stop trying to be a hall monitor and get out of the left lane.
9oz_Noodle@reddit
Separate lanes of travel for "heavy" and large vehicles that arent permissible with a standard commuter car.
Same thing on the opposite side. Create an express lane with a speed limit 10mph higher than the regular flow of traffic, but, the kicker is that there are only "x" amount of entrance and exit ramps present per "y" amount of miles.
One of the biggest factors that causes traffic here, seems to be people trying to merge nervously. This creates a bottle neck where nervous driver tries to get on the interstate and THEN get to speed instead of getting to speed and then trying to merge.
Speed limits are set with the idea in mind, that we share the road with vehicles that range anywhere from 500lbs+/- all the way to 80,000lbs+. The limit has to keep the largest, slowest stopping vehicle as a forethought. Doing 80-90mph in a standard commuter car is pretty damn safe as of 2024. 80-90 in a semi with tons and tons of weight... not so much.
More designated routes of travel for people who are nervous/cautious/new drivers that are uncomfortable on major interstates where people have a range of speed anywhere between 50-90mph on most days.
Teach people to be PREDICTABLE > polite. The sentiment is great and I sincerely do have an appreciation for those who are kind. The world needs that more than ever. On the road, however, it causes quite a bit of confusion, unfortunately.
Remove the 25" Widescreen TV that we refer to as an "infotainment system" from cars. Why do we need to watch a movie from the drivers seat??? Knobs and dials work fine. Cheaper to replace too.
Give people a reason to enjoy driving and stay focused. The amount of people i just see in a complete zombified state on a daily basis on my commute is unfathomable.
(These are all personal opinions and I'm not attacking anyone in any way, shape, or form. I am 100% open to being wrong and discussing differences & opinions without any demeaning insults. I have an open mind and enjoy sharing ideas.)
Francesca_N_Furter@reddit
No offense, but I see the complaint about nervous people merging all the time on this sub, and I'm calling bullshit on all of you. I cannot tell you the number of times I was merging onto the road and the guy in the lane I'm trying to merge into suddenly speeds up to block me...his little friend behind him glues himself to his bumper and so does the moron behind them.....they form this idiotic Maginot line to keep ANYONE from merging. I was behind a guy just this morning who did that to someone trying to merge in...he suddenly slams on the gas, and the man merging had to hit his brakes hard
So, all the reddit ladies can whine all they like about nervous mergers, but it's the morons who are speeding and blocking out oncoming traffic that is usually the problem. Everyone wants to be first, and all of the"nervous" mergers are actually the only reason you pinheads aren't in the body shop every day. Somebody has to back down.
It's at the point now that I am shocked when I can merge normally. It's like parallel parking. Nobody knows how to do it anymore.

I think you're grossly underestimating how dangerous driving at 90 miles per hour is vs 55 or 65. Your stopping distance in a Camry will be around 600 feet vs under 300 feet at 55 miles per hour. Accidents are about three times more likely to be fatal at 90 vs 55. Your fuel efficiency is reduced by about 30%.
But yeah, I guess if you make it home alive, you'll be there a few minutes earlier so that's good.
Automatic-Will-7836@reddit
I disagree about your fuel efficiency statement. I don't go 90 ever, but I'll hit 85 sometimes on long trips, and I get much better mpg if I go faster than if I do 55.

Perception/decision/reaction time for emergency braking is around 1.5 seconds. At 90 miles per hour you have already travelled 200 feet before your foot has touched the brake pedal. At 60 miles per hour that would be about 140 feet.
I would be absolutely astonished if a Camry, or any car, could decelerate from 60-0 in 20 feet as you claim Car and Driver claims. Unless, of course, you think that the roads are a closed course where obstacles and emergencies are known about ahead of time and perception time doesn't matter?
9oz_Noodle@reddit
Okay sure! I’m open for any and all perspectives.
Apparently, I’m biased, 1.5 seconds seems like alot to me personally. I’ve had a consistent <1 second reaction time in driving related matters for over 10 years now, with the time slips to boot.
Most newer vehicles will stop from 60’mph in less than 150’. Hell I’m pretty sure a new mustang stops from 60mph in less than 80 feet.
That being said, the technology is present. I don’t expect everyone to commute like they’re qualifying for the Indy 500, but it’s no secret that the driving quality of the average population is gone down quite significantly in recent years. If I knew how to make a difference that was a safe bet for all parties involved, id be yelling it from the rooftops
Obviously I’m not advocating for every situation to call for max braking effort or to push your vehicle to its limits anytime one has to drive. Me personally? I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Educating myself and becoming familiar with my vehicles limitations only seems like the responsible thing to do, whether it’s researching online or going to an empty parking lot where no one else is around. Accounting for roughly 90-100ft @ 60mph with a 1.5 average reaction time is something I didn’t put into the equation, going forward, it’s definitely something to keep in mind!

None of that will diminish road rage. That's like saying the way to stop bullying stop making the bully angry. Bullies and bullies and just not setting them off won't fix the problems.
We need to aggressively punish road rage to one notch below drunk driving. It's dangerous and 100% controllable. The world is an unpredictable place and no matter what we put into place to make it more predictable, unpredictable things will happen on the road. If people don't know how to respond to unpredictability on the road without getting angry, they have no business driving in the first place. Get mad? Pull over and cool your tits. Maybe go for a talk. Kick some rocks or something. If you're in road rage, you're the problem, not whatever set you off.
SkylarMac@reddit
This is actually a really good suggestion. Theres a lot of nervous drivers where I live, too - and our system of having people come to a complete stop halfway down an acceleration ramp for our freeways and highways only compounds this issue here. People are afraid to gun it, when that is the only way to get up to speed from that point to be able to merge safely.
Also hard agree on the removal of infotainment systems - a ten inch screen with a map and access to music is about all a person needs there if anything outside of a knob for heat and a/c, hazard lights, and airflow control on the center console. The only reason I argue for a screen at all is because it is much safer and more accessible in this day and age than a paper map - most people don't know how to read those anymore, and combining it with the radio just makes sense. It should not have messaging or video capabilities.

Maybe it’s just me but I feel like road rage has always been common. It’s become a little more common recently but I’ve just chalked that up to there being way more people here now.
Either way I am grateful to work from home, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to commuting, at least not during rush hour.

Road rage is a problem of overcrowding. You mix bad drivers with good ones and rage is the result. So yes it is a growing problem as more and more roads get more and more crowded.
No-Aspect1982@reddit
Also, there are a lot more lifted pickup trucks and large SUVs driving around, many without great visibility for the driver, and they’re harder to see over snd around, too. It’s just more unpleasant for everyone.

I can't say for all areas but can only speak about mine. Too many people move to an area where the roads aren't built to handle that much traffic. Add in the natives that know where they're driving to but are stuck behind those that are new to the area and going ten under. It makes sense people will get frustrated. None of this excuses road rage that can take a life though

I discuss the growing problem of Road Rage in one of my videos as I believe much of this has to do with the current Culture of Narcissism in America.
https://youtu.be/qqiUbMKozts?si=IbC65C_6HWzN0s-Z
The other side of this culture, is a the building of a culture of violence---the modern world is conditioning many to use violence to solve problems:
- someone in the way of your life? kill it
- someone in the way while driving? shoot it
- a bunch of people in the way of your terrorist state? genocide them
Do you see now?

As cars got safer, drivers paid less attention. In addition to safety, older cars were more engaging. They didn't always have AC, power steering and a 12 speaker stereo. You had to be in the moment to drive them.
How do we fix it? I don't know. I keep shooting at all the bad drivers but even more come behind them. If we ever get self-driving cars that should reduce the problem.
melissam17@reddit
And having the cameras and sensors now to tell when a car is behind or next to you. I could never imagine trusting a sensor as my only source of information. I love my car because it’s before cars got so fancy. I have a key I put in the car for it to turn on. I have normal headlights that don’t blind everyone. It’s simple. I don’t want to ever have a new car they have out now. It’s too overstimulating
melissam17@reddit
People have gotten dangerous drivers. Speeding way too fast, riding up cars butts, changing lanes very closely to another car. It’s absolutely terrifying. I was driving 70 in a 65 zone and still had people driving up on me and making very dangerous lane changes to go around me. People need to slow down. There is not a race going on.
balanced_crazy@reddit
What I am doing is “not driving in a rage inducing way”. What are you doing??
Francesca_N_Furter@reddit
Nobody will agree with this, but there was a lot more of a police presence when I first started driving, and people kept within the limit, they rarely (and I mean RARELY) tailgated, and there was no road rage--- I never even heard of road rage until I had been driving for twenty years.
When I first started driving, the police were strict, and you saw them ALL THE TIME. Nobody was going 80 regularly on the highways (speed limits are 65 at the most near me) and nobody was tailgating. I rarely see people getting pulled over any more.
And I saw the beginnings of a road rage situation near Gillette stadium a few months ago....a neanderthal in a truck got out to confront the other driver. He walks up ahead and sees a police car at the next intersection, and suddenly runs back to his truck.

Public transit will not work, not in the US. It is multiples of the cost fo transit anywhere else, that is one reason it works there but not here. A train ride that would be 100 Euro in the EU would be $450 on Amtrak and the trains not as nice or clean.
Then there is the way our cities are laid out, there is not walking to the grocery a block or two away, you HAVE TO DRIVE. Transit in the US does not run 24/7 and not even close. Nobody is going to take a train into the city when they may get stuck there overnight.
And speaking of cell phones, they are the cause of about 50% of modern road rage, one day they should outlaw them....OH WAIT! no really one day they should make them so that if your motor is running you have no signal other than the 911 override which you have even when you allow the account to lapse.
Wigberht_Eadweard@reddit
Most of our cities did fine without cars for a very long time. Reducing suburbanites’ ability to drive through city neighborhoods by taking measures to force them onto a few arterials while simultaneously improving regional rail and transit inside the city can easily push many onto public transit rather than waiting in traffic. Most original farther out suburbs were built up around train stations. Then, the same thing happened with highways. They just built them near an exit. It would take a whole lot of time and you’d be relying on a lot to go right, but I think the majority of Americans could have pretty similar lives to now while relying on public transit for maybe 80% of their movement. Travel between large cities is a complicated thing, but if the northeast corridor and maybe a good western rail connection get figured out I don’t think it would be crazy to think we’d eventually have pretty good rail connecting the coasts that would at least be competitive with flying.

Sad-Ambassador-2748@reddit
Road design is pretty terrible. For example a road near me has sensorless light and they’re some of the worst times lights in existence.
Around 5-7 people are going 60 in a 45 to catch the lights. As traffic builds people aggressively swerve around to go fast enough to catch the greens.
This happens until it’s too congested all together and people still run those reds for the first second or two
Powerful_Tone2024@reddit
What kind of person is your typical road rager? What kind of person is willing to stop their car on the side of the road and get in a fistfight over some meaningless whatever? Oftentimes they're also willing to stab or shoot.
Answer: In nearly every case, they are deeply dysfunctional and possibly criminal personalities who have little to live for. They almost certainly have negative net worth, crappy menial jobs, and little or no auto insurance. With a negative net worth, getting sued is of no concern to them. In short, they are desperate and miserable. "Winning" a ridiculous battle of who cuts who off or whatever is actually meaningful for them. Think about that. Something that's totally meaningless . . . is very meaningful to them. When you consider what kind of people they are, the fact that every single day they lose at life, this makes perfect sense.
The Solution: Don't engage. It's a stupid thing to do. How are you going to win a pissing contest with a prick? And what's the prize for winning? Zero. It's extremely stupid.
Most importantly: Every time I drive in my nice new car (with plenty of insurance) to my gated community and beautiful home with a small mortgage, I win. And they lose. Every single day of their miserable lives. End of story. And they know it. They pretend like they don't, but they do. This is the truth. It doesn't matter who likes it or doesn't like it.
Man0fGreenGables@reddit
There was actually some research on road rage that showed people making 80k or more were the most likely to be the perpetrators.
Powerful_Tone2024@reddit
You know, anyone who has anything to lose who does this sort of thing is beyond moronic. If you have a good job, getting arrested is a real problem and getting sued is also a big problem. Whenever people pull over on the side of the road and fight, the cops are going to arrest everybody nearly every single time. Lawsuits are filed over everything, and certainly over any road rage thing. And trust me, if you get sued for participating in road rage, you can assume that your auto insurer will cancel coverage.
In fact, I expect the prevalence of dashcams eventually to find its way back to auto insurers. I know auto insurers would be thrilled to stop writing policies for people who engage in this type of behavior. Do you think any study is needed to confirm a positive correlation between road ragers and costing auto insurance money (being involved in many claims)?

Require actual licenses. Like Sweden Norway and Germany. Most rage inducing incidents would likely be mitigated if people would understand how close tailgating actually is, how to properly zipper merge, how to move that fuck over if you’re. _mattyjoe@reddit
I am an Uber/Lyft driver in LA (California). I have been on and off since 2017. Driving in this city has always required extremely defensive driving, even back then.
However, we have a situation now where there is a truly shocking amount of reckless driving, all day, every day, in every way you can imagine. Driving here has become extremely draining. Absolutely every vehicle on the road could do anything at any minute, and it wears on you.
There's also this very strong sense of defiance. I will honk my horn when something crazy happens. I remember years ago, people were much more deferential. We all were. A mistake is a mistake. If you did something truly dangerous, 8 times out of 10 we would be mature adults and take the L. We would wave apologetically, adjust our driving to be more cautious from that point on.
Today, people will get mad at YOU after they threaten your safety with some bonehead maneuver and you dare try to call them out on it. Then they'll peel off driving just as dangerously or more so.
I have had instances where I was making my way down a busy street, and a single car was driving so poorly, they made several mistakes that impacted me, back to back, leading themselves perhaps to a situation where now, okay, I'm on their left side and they're trying to get over to turn left and I'm there, and they'll flip out at me. Go behind me, right on my bumper, flash their lights. Meanwhile, all I'm doing is traveling down this street in my lane. An entire drama unfolds because this person is so incredibly inept at driving, their own poor decisions lead them to not be in the right place, then they flip out on someone else.
People's driving is also insanely petty.
One thing in particular that has become an epidemic: People intentionally speeding up to prevent you from passing or merging. People will drive for miles and miles going slow as hell, and I will move to pass them so I can perhaps be in the correct lane to turn or exit the freeway, and they will suddenly speed up, VERY obviously, and then get pissed if I manage to pass them anyway, honking and flashing their lights. This is absolutely insane behavior.
Another thing that's become an epidemic: People seeing no problem merging RIGHT in front of you when you're traveling at a faster speed in the lane beside them. It DOES NOT MATTER how close you are, it's almost like people are playing a game of chicken to see how close they can get to hitting you when they cut you off.
I will be on a stretch of road where I'm slowly moving up on a car that's far ahead, and moving more slowly, sometimes for a minute or more, and then suddenly they will throw on their signal and merge in front of me JUST as I'm coming up on them. It's insane.
I could go on and on. It's insane what I'm seeing happening on our roadways. And yes, road rage and aggressive driving is just rampant, and frankly, creating a very very dangerous situation.
Since fall started, anecdotally, I have seen a tremendous increase in accidents, and very very bad ones at that. I'm encountering more freeway stoppages so they can clear wreckage.
When you drive all over the city for as long as I do, you do start to get a finger on the pulse for what's going on out there. It's not good.
