The prices he charges are prices that let the farm make a profit. Clarkson isn't running the farm as an extension of his finances, but as a viable business. The prices of goods in supermarkets etc... are so low because it's a race to the bottom to see who can pay the farmers the least, and farmers then rely on subsidies to keep going. Of course now that idiot running the country had put farmland into inheritance tax the farmers with no money (aka all of them), who can't make a profit, won't have their children wanting to take over their farms when they die because they will have to find 40% of it's value in cash, or sell it off to pay the government tax. What doesnt labour understand about "no farmers and farmland = no food" same as the bullshit in Wales where they've been told to plant trees on 20% of their land or get no subsidies.

Farmers are constantly shafted, the least we can do is give them the courtesy of paying the 'inflated' price for their produce they choose to sell locally.
