Why do most of you have the PC on your desk? It's louder & bright against the monitor too.

Case on the floor:
Pros:
- Even more quiet due to the distance.
- Pulls in colder air close to the floor for both front and PSU.
- No distracting LEDs vs the monitor.
- No risk of falling down.
Cons:
- Bit more dust technically, but haven't seen much difference. Just vacuum the filters once 1-2 week.
- Redditors keep posting shatter side panels glasses.
MarbleGarbagge@reddit
They’re meant to be on a desk top, hence the term “ desktop computer” but it’s fine to have them on the floor if you want/need.
As far as for monitors, if you have rgb in your pc there shouldn’t be any overlap while your monitor is on. If there is, the monitor is probably a low quality. I’ve never had issues myself across 3 different builds.
Optional-Failure@reddit
The name "desktop" is to separate it from "laptop". "Doesn't fit on your lap computer" doesn't have the same ring to it.
There is absolutely nothing about the name that indicates where it's "meant to be" placed.
Main_Event_1083@reddit
“No distracting LEDS”??? I specifically built mine to distract.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
That's fine, we all love LEDs. But why would you ruin the monitor viewing with all the graphics and tweaking just by LEDs right next to it?
9okm@reddit
No, we do not.
b-maacc@reddit
Solid side panel team represent.
Judas_priest_is_life@reddit
The pc I just built has NO RGB at all. All black noctua fans, black case, black motherboard, black ram. The whole 9 RGB white fans, aio block with an anime girl, rainbow flashing ram trend is so overdone now.
9okm@reddit
You're after my own heart :D. https://pcpartpicker.com/b/CnBZxr
KFC_Junior@reddit
no what, how shit is your attention span for that to happen
Throwawayhobbes@reddit
Every time I look at it I smile It’s like seeing an old friend . It brings comfort and joy.
Slimshadyhighschool@reddit
Most have it under the desk which would be slightly worse for airflow.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
You mean better as they take cold air close to the floor (and cooled by floor vs hot air rising).
t0m0hawk@reddit
The difference in air temperature in a 3-foot distance is going to be extremely marginal.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
I wouldn't discount it. Modern cases have the PSU vent sucking up air from the cold wooden floor. Even my head can feel the difference when I'm lying on the floor on hot summer days.
TimeZucchini8562@reddit
The difference in air temperature is an average of 6.5 c per 1000 meters in elevation. You’re talking a .0065 C degree difference. Yes we are discounting that as 100% negligible and will not affect cooling at all.
KungFuHamster@reddit
This is silly. We're talking interiors of houses, not the Kansas plains.
TimeZucchini8562@reddit
So looking into thermal stratification, we’re talking 2-5 degrees c. Wow. So much. Such cooling. Would you car to know the thermal readings of a cpu with an outside ambient temperature of a 2 degree delta?
t0m0hawk@reddit
Yes your head is feeling the temperature from the floor - not the air above the floor.
Air in the room isn't stagnant, the air doesn't just hangout in layers. It's constantly moving around. The air that was above the floor is being replaced by warmer air from above as things - such as the fans in the PC - are adding turbulence.
I'm telling you it's a marginal effect. And by "marginal" I'm being extremely generous. The difference in temperature as measured in your PC is going to be almost non-existent.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
The head feeling the temperature is the floor radiating its coldness into the air I felt from. I didn't say I touched my face to the floor to feel its coolness.
t0m0hawk@reddit
Ok buddy whatever you say
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
If my body feels something cooler on the floor without touching, isn't it air?
t0m0hawk@reddit
Your body isn't a thermometer.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
Answer my Q.
t0m0hawk@reddit
It doesn't matter what your body is feeling. It isn't a thermometer.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
Millions of years of evolution, right.
t0m0hawk@reddit
This can't be real
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
Says a guy who can't tell an obvious temp difference between lying down and sitting.
t0m0hawk@reddit
If it's so obvious, using your face, what is the temperature difference between the ground and the surface of your desk? I'll even let you pick the units you want to use.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
Keep dodging my questions.
t0m0hawk@reddit
Sorry you aren't getting the validation you're looking for.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
What validation? I don't argue all day online Go touch the grass.
Listen-bitch@reddit
Your body isn't good at measuring any temperature. I feel cold when I'm hungry, my feet always feel colder than other parts of my body, even if at the same level.
ShrapnelShock@reddit (OP)
You're right
Mopar_63@reddit
If you Build it right it will be more than quiet enough for being on a desk, this is not hard to do.
Again if the room is cooled you will actually get MORE cool air from on the desk as you will be more inline with typical air flow.
Well that's cause your being silly and worrying about RGB.
While I see the point, first if the system is not on the "edge" of the desk you will be fine. Second under a desk almost always seeks the computer kicked at some point or another.
Cons:
If you have good filters this can be a big deal as a good filter, as it works will reduce air flow, also just cleaning the filters is not enough, you need to clean the PC periodically and under the desk makes this more of an effort.
That's just people know paying attention and being reckless with their builds.
no_4@reddit
Idk. Mines on the floor, and I avoid cases with clear aides.
Naturalhighz@reddit
Honestly, my cables don't reach the monitors from the floor
No-Explanation1034@reddit
Port and part access. In the process of upgrading things, slowly over time, so its just easier to have it already be where i would be working on it. My desk is pretty big, so it's far enough not to reflect off the screen. PC not loud enough to be heard through headset or over soundbar. Plus, I am inclined to visually inspect it daily, so it always gets cleaned before dust becomes an issue, and all greasy fingerprints are removed swiftly. I get to appreciate the light show with the turn of my head. Any diagnostic lights are evident on startup, because I always watch it startup.
tHornyier_ork@reddit
My rig is right next to my monitor I have 0 glare. It doesn't distract me at all
SlapBumpJiujitsu@reddit
I lost a long and well proven (and aggravating) Ryzen early adopter build with an 1700X and 1080ti to a cat that decided to spray my on-the-floor computer while I was out of town. It was off. It didn't matter. I had someone coming by to clean the litter box. He was just big mad. He was old and not really willing to jump for such a crime of passion.
Guess the cat's coat color.
catarxcts@reddit
Dog owner here. Even though I vacuum 2 days a week and get my dog regularly groomed, there is a ton of dust/hair/dander that I would like to not clean out every 6 months
Enough_Standard921@reddit
Under the desk doesn’t mean on the floor. Hanging mount for the win, best of both worlds. Clear desk, less fan noise, USB ports in the right place, less dust and better airflow.
nigirizushi@reddit
Mine's under my desk, but off the floor. They sell stands for towers.
Yellow2345@reddit
I’ve had my PC on the floor since the early 2000s. With my then CRT monitor I just didn’t have the desk space. Later it was easier accessing the cd/dvd drive when my tower was on the ground.
I went mini ITX in the late 2000s and haven’t looked back since.
CtrlAltDesolate@reddit
Depends on your system, desk and setup. For mine...
On the desk pros:
On the desk cons:
Noise and coolness are a moot point due to parts choice / fan curve / mesh panel at rear of desk, and risk of falling is slim due to weight and centre of gravity on the case.
Greennit0@reddit
There's not many objective reasons to do it.
I mean it's not a good idea to park your sports car in your living room. Would I do it if I could? Hell yes!
ovO_Zzzzzzzzz@reddit
Performance of computer will increase 50% when the RGB being oberve by human.
Less dust.
Performance of computer will increase 50% when the RGB being oberve by human.
Thundernutz79@reddit
Are those 50% increases compounded by multiple observing humans? If so, I need to make some friends.
ovO_Zzzzzzzzz@reddit
The almighty god of RGB will bring a rtx6090 in the 12pm to the bed of the adherent that promote the Creed Of RGB.
R4b@reddit
My PC looks pretty. Also carpet.
bow_down_whelp@reddit
I am not putting my pc on the floor to kill my 4090 with dust
MankyFundoshi@reddit
Mine is on a stand just over my shoulder. When I want to see the pretty I just swivel a little. Would never put my PC directly on the floor.
KungFuHamster@reddit
Mine's on the floor but on a little frame with casters so I can easily move it if I need to, for wiring changes or whatever. No RGB. It's a mostly silent build that I can only hear when I'm playing a very demanding game. It's a tool for playing games and doing work and doomscrolling, not a piece of art.
Listen-bitch@reddit
My case barely has any led. So it doesn't distract. But i put a lot of thought and effort into the aesthetics of the case, if I'm not going to see it whats the building all that effort.
My desk is plenty big enough for it, and if it wasn't there I'd fill it up with other clutter so rather that take up room than random documents.
Davaca55@reddit
I have a tiled floor.
Clear_Ad9108@reddit
I spesificallt made my pc as low profile as possible. Low temps, low sound low visibility. It is stored under my desk in a space I could put drawers onto. Its so nice and quiet in there. All visible are som odd cables, monitor, kb, mouse and a usb hub
KEKWSC2@reddit
Cos many like to watch their pcs, I really dont get it either.
cla96@reddit
mine on the floor, actually would keep it up if i had the space just for ease of use like i did with some old build , but i agree although my rgb are very low key i don't like if they distracts me from the screen and anyway i got two studio monitor on the desk that take the space and are more important. Everytime i see a super build online with some small cheap speakers near the monitor im hoping they're using just headphones.
Proccito@reddit
I have mine on my desk as it's tucked away enough not to be on display, but accessible enough for when I need to tinker with it.
I have an J-shaped desk, so it's hidden behind one of my monitors.
Every_Recording_4807@reddit
Mount your PC to desk underneath
kattodegatto@reddit
bruzanHD@reddit
My PC is on the desk because: It is completely inaudible, the air on the desk is colder because there is no carpet on my desk, I have no RGB in my setup, it is in the corner of the room against a wall so cannot fall, also there is no glass on my case.
Planetary_Nebula@reddit
My desk is a cheapo amazon special that has a single shelf that's just a few inches off the floor. The space between that shelf and the desktop is a near perfect fit for my mid-size case.
But I feel like most people posting pictures build something they think is pretty and want to look at it and show it to ppl. Not how I build PCs. I want the PC itself to be out of my view while I use it, but if you spend a bunch of time finding nice looking componenets and customizing all the lighting, you probably want to look at it and show it off.
QuaintAlex126@reddit
This is exactly how my PC is placed in my setup and exactly my philosophy for PC building.
Function>Form
You can still have both, but I start judging when cosmetic choices are causing you to downgrade your CPU or GPU.
DardS8Br@reddit
Didn't have the room. I actually keep my PC with the glass window facing my wall
carlbandit@reddit
I like the look of my case, plus I once spilt a drink on my PC when it was on the floor which wrote my GPU & motherboard off, possibly the CPU as I've not tested it yet.
OverAddition6264@reddit
I can’t fit mine on my desk, I have a stand with wheels that keeps it 2” off floor and it’s under my desk
9okm@reddit
I don't get it either. But from what I gather people like looking at their PC.
kNIGHTSFALLN@reddit
I don’t like mine of the desk more because the heat than anything else. I bought extra long cables to get it away from me
Hungry_Reception_724@reddit
Im with you OP, floor 100%, never understood the broken side panel thing, clumsy people are going to break it regardless. Doesnt matter where it is. And ive never had problems with dust.
Vacuum the filter even once every 1-2 months you animals, there should be no issue with dust on a floor.
soundologist6@reddit
My PC compliments my setup. It's looks just as great as it performs!
foggiermeadows@reddit
I didn't buy all this pretty crap to tuck it away, but I've started putting it on the floor because I got a G9 and it takes up literally my entire desk if I want it front and center sooooo
MagicPistol@reddit
My desk is huge and has no space under it for a PC. The drawers are all there. There's no room next to the desk either as my bed is there.
GreatDevourerOfTacos@reddit
There are lots of ways to have a PC on a desk and not have it shine on monitors.
If you spent the time to put a lot of LEDs in it, it's for show. Putting it low where it's not drawing attention is kind of a waste of the LEDs. That's like spending money for a piece of art and hanging it in your garage next to the circuit breakers.
Holiday_Bug9988@reddit
I’ve got mine on a night stand beside my desk. Keeps it off the floor but clears up desk space.
tucketnucket@reddit
I'm proud of my build. I put time into picking parts that are both performant and nice looking. I put time only proper cable management. Put time onto building RGB profiles. I love the look of a PC. Less dust collection. Easier access to ports.
Goose00724@reddit
i put mine on the floor because my PC weighs like >30 pounds.
i've already maxed out my desk's load capacity by having my cathode ray tube monitor on it.
Beardy_Boy_@reddit
I don't like mine on the desk at all. It's loud and just takes up useful space.
