ULPT: Getting laid off and losing everything
Posted by whimsical-wander3r@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 166 comments
The company I’ve worked loyally for got bought out by a bigger company, and since roles apparently overlap with their current employees, they laid off a bunch of us this past Friday. They’re keeping us until December 20 and then we’re done. The funny thing is that they are keeping my coworkers that I helped train, but still perform less quality work than I do. They’re also getting rid of employees with Master degrees in our field. They haven’t told us how they decided who stays and who goes, and it seems like they’re ignoring our messages and emails but still training and talking to the ones who are staying. My job is what makes up 80% of me and my partners income, so that’s gone. I turn 26 this month so not only do I lose my parents health insurance but now my own. What can I do to fuck over this new company who’s getting rid of so many people and ruining lives? Spam them with bad reviews?
Short--Stuff@reddit
Sounds like they probably targeted the higher paid employees, like most companies do.
Loyalty means nothing anymore
88bauss@reddit
Yeah I was getting 140k and was let go few weeks ago. After I outlined how to basically do all my work so people getting paid half can do it 😑😑😑😑
tmp_acct9@reddit
Ha I had that happen too, saw the writing on the wall and left out a few details. You want to let go of someone that invented your product, better believe they keep things under their belt
tehZamboni@reddit
Same. My technical documentation I left behind at a few jobs were technically correct if you wanted to prep a new server, but largely useless for actually keeping the systems running from day to day. There have been some stupidly expensive training opportunities for a couple companies who were sure I could be easily replaced.
88bauss@reddit
Yeah I’ll be better about it next time
Short--Stuff@reddit
Sounds about right. It's disgusting.
sdswiki@reddit
This is exactly what happened to myself and the other most senior person in my department, once we were merged...
aksdb@reddit
It's a two sided coin though. Employees with better degree and better job title might also have it easier finding a new job.
UncreativeTeam@reddit
Loyalty never meant anything in capitalism lol
TheAvenger23@reddit
homeboy is 26 years old, how loyal could he have been? 8 years of loyalty?
Short--Stuff@reddit
You say this like 4 years of your life means nothing 😂
keepingitrealgowrong@reddit
That's like saying your college should be loyal to you lmao
TheAvenger23@reddit
That’s unfair. 4 years is a lot, but I wouldn’t consider that to be loyal. In my 40 year career if I work for 8 different companies 5 years each, was that being a loyal worker? I don’t think so.
Saying that, your company gives zero fucks about your loyalty. So if you can move on for more money or flexibility or whatever other advantage. Do it.
Short--Stuff@reddit
Got that right.
Maybe YOU wouldn't, but my personal view is loyalty is not just about the length of time. You don't know what someone has been through / done/ experienced in those 4 years.
InvisibleObelisk@reddit
Never trust employer

they are THAT retarded that "experience means nothing"

GraviNess@reddit
anything over 2 years its a commitment to careeer, it should count.
Professional_One2631@reddit
🤣 you must be a Gen Z
GraviNess@reddit
i genuinly didnt know what the brackets were, i googled it, im a millenial.
JediRaptor2018@reddit
Loyalty may actually be a disadvantage since it implies the employee has been there for a while, which also probably means they make more just by being a senior staff. When mass layoffs come, those with higher salaries are easier targets to let go.
jmmenes@reddit
That’s always been the case right?
What about tech companies?
FrankClymber@reddit
Lol the economic system don't enter in to it. Respecting loyalty is a character trait you either have it don't have.
UncreativeTeam@reddit
Do you think mergers and acquisitions just happen for funsies?
lilshortwun@reddit
Yup same thing happened to me last year. The few employees they kept around were low performers and given a 1 yr contract where they did absolutely nothing while still getting paid.
Fun_Intention9846@reddit
Exactly. “Employee I trained” that means they are newer and paid less than OP. Quality of work doesn’t matter when the quality doesn’t generate income.
Budget rules all.
DjScenester@reddit
This is how accountants destroy companies :)
Kooky-Swing178@reddit
Lol it's true. I had a (not as detrimental) example of this happen to me in college. I worked for circuit city and they decided to lay off all of the department managers who had reached their wage cap and bring in new hires for minimum wage with no commission. So all their top sales people in TVs and computers got replaced by kids with no knowledge of the products,no sales experience nor a commission structure to incentivize them to care. To add insult to injury they offered the managers the opportunity to reapply in 90s days at starting pay. (Minimum wage) Granted the company was doomed regardless but this was a nail gun to the coffin rather than a hammer. Online shopping was already hurting big time so the only reason people shopped in store were for knowledgeable sales reps, local tech support, and installation.
DjScenester@reddit
I worked at CC. Yep it was the final nail in the coffin.
Kooky-Swing178@reddit
Ahh damn so you know all about it. I left about 4 months after all that happened. I later heard that the store got robbed blind by employees the last year. The store director and manager were so checked out already that it went on right under their noses and they either didn't realize it or didnt care. Like warehouse guys were just wheeling shit out the front door with phony receipts in hand for themselves and other employees, having friends wait by the front door for pickup. I don't know if companies like that always implode in such dramatic fashion but damn that was something else.
PremiumUsername69420@reddit
Unless you work in Quality in a regulated industry, in which case getting it right the first time and on time matters so much more than not generating any income.
broke_velvet_clown@reddit
It's called "reducing opex expenditures"
jmmenes@reddit
Yeah that makes sense.
Cost cutting wherever they can.
JediRaptor2018@reddit
Sat through something this a few years ago. When a new company comes in, there will almost always be significant layoffs. They don't know what any of the staff do, but they do know how much each person makes. First they cut upper management, then go down the list and just blindly cut the highest paying staff and leave the rest to pick up the pieces.
klaxz1@reddit
Loyalty is what nazis have; it’s a bad word.
megablast@reddit
It never did. And only a moron would think so today. Time this guy woke up.
Dry-humper-6969@reddit
Loyalty? Loyalty to their own pockets!
lucycolt90@reddit
Nope so that's why you should always consult with an employment lawyer when getting laid off. Take what you can, no one is going to thank you for leaving gracefully. Some places have even stopped giving references so always work with yourself in mind first
sdswiki@reddit
Put in minimal effort. Sit there and search all day for jobs on Linkedin, I wouldn't even be too worried about coworkers seeing me. I'd be open, honest, matter of fact.
whimsical-wander3r@reddit (OP)
Basically what I’ve been doing all day 😂
sdswiki@reddit
don't feel proud, feel sad that your governments have failed. exactly what i've been agreeing with you all day.
corvcycleguy@reddit
And there’s going to be a lot more of this with Trump in office.
Affectionate-Bid-226@reddit
Do you own a home? If you do take out a home equity loan before you get laid off and use that money to keep yourself afloat while you find a new job.
one2zerojigawat@reddit
Apply for internal postings at both companies. Use your internal connections to make easy intros and off the cuff interviews. Find the hiring managers and get "chats" scheduled.
It has worked for me in the past when dealing with transition periods.
garaks_tailor@reddit
Have ChatGPT write thousands of pages of documentation that is actually nonsensical and put them in your company's data archive.
If you have the access insert proof of contract and/or purchases of multiple software modules signed by people nonlonger there or will soon not be there . Then start sending their accounting dept bills for them.
g_myrtle@reddit
This is brilliant
originalityescapesme@reddit
Some of the top companies in the world have just paid bills that were sent to them without actually doing any due diligence. I remember reading an article about a guy who bilked a few places for pretty decent sums of money before an audit was ever triggered.
Potato-Engineer@reddit
The successful ones usually have enough inside info to latch onto known suppliers, etc. Random bills are rarely paid (but are paid often enough that they can make a decent low-level grift if you're willing to do it enough), but bills against "our usual vendors" are much more likely to be paid.
sirgog@reddit
Or if you don't know who their suppliers are, just name well known companies within the industry. Worked at a small aviation consultancy and we got bills for quite specific technical services from Bombardier. We immediately recognised them as false (we didn't deal with Bombardier and it was a small enough company that the owner checked all outgoings) but I could have easily seen this working if aimed at larger competitors like SGI.
Katwazere@reddit
There was a massive group of scammers that would hack into the emails of supply companys, and basically trick companies into paying them instead of the supply company
originalityescapesme@reddit
Yeah I’m sure that would increase the likelihood of success quite a bit.
Dicktures@reddit
Documentation about what?
LegendEater@reddit
Why does that matter?
Dicktures@reddit
These comments are so confusing, wouldn’t someone open up the document and see it’s a 20 page thesis on ping pong strategy and just close it? Or is deeper than that, assuming most people are stupid and they would spend time looking into them 🤣

Use chatgpt and find open roles in your field. apply for jobs like crazy— I’m serious, aim for 3 applications a day. Holidays are upon us and the workforce climate is unstable due to economy, holidays etc.
Sure_Comfort_7031@reddit
3 a day is low. You (OP) is unemployed. From now until Dec 20 I would do basically no work for the company and just be appliying to jobs all day. On my last search I was aiming to get OUT, not for a specific role, I had 83 applications out and active at one time. Job search sites made it easy to apply to some quickly, even some that I was on the fringe of qualified for, I still threw my resume at them at least.
2-3 an hour for 8 hours a day is OPs new job.
Chat GPT can write cover letters.
Goodgoditsgrowing@reddit
Got any good cover letter prompts for ChatGPT
Sure_Comfort_7031@reddit
You feed it your resume and job description and tell it to write you a cover letter.
akwasibroni@reddit
That's really cool. My wife needs a job but she just legally immigrated to america, do you think I can feed chatgpt the resume and get suggestions for what Jobs she could be applying to. She's a poly Sci major and worked in government for the press secretary.
Sure_Comfort_7031@reddit
Uhhhhh I have no idea. I just use job search sites, indeed has treated me well. I'm sure chatgpt can do something like that but i never have.
busybody1@reddit
Exactly this. Eye for an eye at this point
arbitrageME@reddit
that's not ULPT enough.

Where do you live / and what are the discrimination laws where you live?
You just need to find one female/gay/other minority (dependant on local laws) and bang you've got a discrimination case.
Given the sub, you should make out that you are gay and that you definitely heard some talk about 'making the queers and Jews redundant'. Big companies will shit the bed at the snifter of a discrimination case, so engage a lawyer to write letter and you should get a nice payout.
Lord412@reddit
Negotiate a severance package and apply for unemployment asap. If they don’t give you severance you can collect unemployment money all states are different but I was still making good money after I was laid off. Technically been on unemployment 3 different times in my life after losing jobs. It’s not the end of the world and it’s not wrong to try to collect unemployment. Update that resume and start applying like crazy. If you company isn’t gonna give you a severance. Leave early if you get a job offer.
Boulderdrip@reddit
last time i got laid off was during covid and lost my life insurance, lost my home, had to move across america to move back in with parent, and then i got sick with an auto immune disease and was out of work for 2 years.
AnnoyedVelociraptor@reddit
Tell your trainee how much you made.
throttlelogic@reddit
time to get networking with any customers, vendors, etc that you have worked with. Do NOT badmouth the company you are leaving or disclose any inner workings or info about that company. It would only go to show the other people you aren’t trustworthy or able to be discrete with company info and it will hurt your chances of getting a referral. Let everyone know that you’re looking for a career change. Talk to people in positions and companies you’d be interested in working for. Definitely cut back all extra spending and take the next couple months to stack cash as high as possible. (Absolutely cancel the tv, Netflix, DoorDash, etc).

Though, you need to be okay with getting them yourself since it would be best to infest the office while you're still working there so they don't suspect the outgoing people from doing it. Maybe wait till someone rage quits before you and do it right after they leave to make them all think that guy brought them in.

CadeMan011@reddit
Tell the people you trained what's happening. Tell them what you were paid and let them know that they're getting rid of all the fairly paid employees, and that there is no room for growth. Get them all to doubt their future at the company so they start looking elsewhere. Sabotage the company from the inside out.
STylerMLmusic@reddit
Don't have a tip, but layoffs are always easy to figure out. The most expensive employees get laid off. The cheapest ones get kept. It's that easy.
Wild-Mention3807@reddit
Piss disk in vents.
corpboy@reddit
Do nothing. Just phone it in until Dec 20. That's basically 2 months of semi-paid leave.
JediRaptor2018@reddit
I would suggest try not to burn bridges with any direct managers (provided you still have a somewhat good relationship with them); you may need their reference in the future. Just do the absolute minimum these next few weeks (but show a bit of work here and there) and try to look for a new job at the same time.

Chad-GPTLMNOP@reddit
If you can feign ignorance well there’s a way that you can do something similar without getting sued. Start renaming documents, anything in excel is passcode locked, move stuff where it shouldn’t be. If you want loyalty, you have to roll your dice on a small business. Any business with more than 100 employees isn't going to show loyalty and, frankly, can't really afford to when big moves happen... like mergers and acquisitions.
I've chosen to work for a small business. After 27 years in my career and 16 years on this job, I earn about 130% of my city's median income without a degree. Benefits are also kinda shit, too. After 16 years, I'm all the way up to 4 weeks of vacation time and my position is salary without comp-time. But, there's a sense of loyalty.
If you want the higher pay and benefits that come from bigger employers, you have to accept the risk of out-of-the-blue layoffs that come with them. They gave you way more notice than most companies bother to. I wouldn't be so butthurt about it.
trooperjess@reddit
Not really that much more time. It is about the amount of for WARN notice requirements.
PurpleToad1976@reddit
Sounds like you have until Dec 20 to receive full pay while spending almost all of your work hours finding a new job. Put forth just barely enough effort to not get fired. Maximize use of sick/vacation/pto time. If they discipline you, who cares, you are getting laid off. There is no longer a career at that job. Treat it as such.
Deiseltwothree@reddit
Never burn a bridge in your career. Always take the high road as you never know what might happen.

MySixHourErection@reddit
Honestly, I’d worry about fucking the other company over later. Right now, you need to direct your energies to getting your house in order: preparing what you need to apply for unemployment, looking at cobra or if your partner can get healthcare through their work (this is a qualifying event), cutting expenses to the bone, pushing student loans, apply for a couple of low interest or introductory rate cards now, while employed. Put expenses on those cards and pay the minimum for now so that you have cash flow for housing, food, and other true necessities. I say this as someone whose partner was just let go and we lost 45% of our income. Try to stay positive (ie not worry about fucking over the company—it wasn’t personal, in fact it was “just business” which is impersonal). Success is the best revenge, and you don’t burn bridges.
whimsical-wander3r@reddit (OP)
This is all really helpful. I haven’t even thought about my student loans or other payments. I’ll definitely look into that, thank you

Dude you're 26 don't black all yourself. You will run into these people in the future. You do not want to miss out on an opportunity in 10 years because a co-worker mentions that years ago so and so password protected all their Excel files before leaving, to the person who is interviewing. Just suck it up and you have the perfect reason for leaving. You could have a job lined up for the first week in January. Put your energy towards improving yourself and not towards petty vengeance.
For who they keep. It's salary and attitude. I've sat in on meetings where they decide who stays/goes and like 70% is salary and they discuss what they have heard about the person. Often it's just a crap shoot if everything else is equal.
But if you must, password protecting stuff is as good as deleting but if they push hard you can always give them the passwords. For me going in to critical worksheets and changing formulas be an option. I have some formulas i wrote years ago that would take me days to figure out. Also history. We keep work in a back up folder but it only gets used in an audit like 5 years later. Delete some of that but not all and it would be deviating in an audit.
zwebzztoss@reddit
Excel workbooks can't really be password protected a 3 line VBA script you can google will unlock any workbook. Just open VBA console in excel, copy paste script, run and it tries 65k+ passwords and unlocks it since uses very weak algo.
Medical_Slide9245@reddit
Yeah but no one in my department would figure that out.
litlmutt@reddit
Same thing happened at my old company except I was part of the group that was hired on. I was relocated and continued working there for several years. Then I was suddenly laid off with 2 weeks severance on 14 years that i had with my original company and the new company, was nice that it was Dec 1st. I was hired back a year later with a bump and a new title. End of the day, while you work for the company, you aren't the company. They owe you nothing, you should feel the same. Its hard because I do personally invest myself in what I do but let this be a lesson for you. Also, Always continue to Grow, What can you do or learn to become more valuable not only with your current company but potential employers? Best of Luck

For a second I thought you were using your wrong head.
Just move on. Company and your work there are not yours. Start looking for new jobs now and take it easy at your current job.

Also don’t put your LinkedIn to open to work banner. just pretend you are still at the company. No one wants to hire rejects in this economy.

Not what you want to hear, but move on. Spend your time focusing on you, your partner, and your next job.
Don’t waste time and effort trying to get even (although if an easy opportunity presents itself…).

It’s hard to say without knowing what systems your company uses. However, get personal phone numbers of those fuckers who work for the company who bought yours and go to town with subscribing them for all kinds of shit including Scientology, ads on Craigslist’s, etc. Use your imagination.

Lmao you’re going to get sued on top of being laid off now
