Hertz "Unlimited" Miles Rental: $10K Charge For Driving Too Much?

saudicheese@reddit
My only problem is going that long without an oil change. But not sure what a good solution to that problem would be
RBeck@reddit
Yah I can't see charging for the miles since unlimited is unlimited, but I can see them having a case if the engine failed for driving without oil and the computer was warning about it. But if the car is fine Hertz has no case.
jrileyy229@reddit
It doesn't matter if the car is fine or not... You've voided the warranty by skipping required service and as such greatly devalued the car
RBeck@reddit
I'm not sure how Hertz making that argument in court would go. They should at least specify in the contract that you are to trade the car for another at the service interval, but they never gave much thought to what "unlimited" meant.
jrileyy229@reddit
Sure, I have no idea. there are specific rental programs for use with door dash and such.... Which I assume the rate is going to be much higher because they know those are going to have more miles and harder miles. Which again, no idea if that's what this guy did or not. But if he claimed personal use, then they looked at the gps data and it would be pretty obvious if it was used for Uber or door dash... If so, any contract he has is worthless.
Shomegrown@reddit
This is actually the main point, and I'm shocked if Hertz doesn't have language in their agreement to protect against maintenance intervals. You're damaging the car by going 25k continuously without service, so it's reasonable for them to recoup losses...but damn, that has to be in the contract somewhere.
ArchReaper@reddit
Hertz has a history of being an awful piece of shit company.
Hope they go out of business.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I hope they don’t. They have GTR’s, c63, 911, range rovers depending on location, and with some luck you can get them for relatively cheap. Much lower than turo prices.
lovsicfrs@reddit
I’ve never seen their pricing to be lower than Turo personally. But I primarily travel to cities
trumpsprisonfeefee@reddit
In my experience it’s mainly when you select a class of vehicles like “Medium Sedan” and they run out of Versas so they offer you a premium vehicle at the same rate.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
This, and the loyalty bonus or whatever if you travel often.
Activehannes@reddit
How does your credit card provide car insurance?
trumpsprisonfeefee@reddit
A lot of credit cards like the Chase Saphire Preferred offer Rental Vehicle Insurance if you pay the full balance on the card and deny Hertz’s or Enterprise’s coverage.
lovsicfrs@reddit
Does this also work on Turo?
trumpsprisonfeefee@reddit
🤷
randallphoto@reddit
Most premium credit cards provide full coverage rental insurance if the rental is paid for with that card.
czekhthis@reddit
Most credit cards provide zero coverage when the rental vehicle's MRSP exceeds a certain value. In Canada, it is often C$50k which means most SUVs and cars above the full size category won't be covered.
randallphoto@reddit
Just checked mine and it covers primary insurance up to $75k. But I know the sapphire reserve is a bit better than most for this coverage. I know the vast majority also act as secondary insurance after your regular auto insurance
hi_im_bored13@reddit
https://www.americanexpress.com/content/dam/amex/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/CRLDI-Benefit-Guide_371-397_EDT_2.20_REV_4.24_a11y2.pdf
Chase, amex, few others provide secondary insurance for renting cars. Turo doesn’t accept it. No need to take hertz coverage, and my cc covers 75k, not that i’ve had to use it
TheRealPizza@reddit
Chase Sapphire is primary, not secondary
an_actual_lawyer@reddit
Y'all realize that your own insurance policy follows you, right?
hi_im_bored13@reddit
yeah don’t want to risk my premium getting raised.
misremembered, it was chase who does primary insurance on rentals.
Sh4d0w_Hunt3rs@reddit
NOPE
anon19890894327@reddit
The issue I have with Turo is the fees. I’ve looked using them before because the advertised per day rate is comparable to Avis, but they’ve ended up being significantly higher after the fees get tacked on.
NewUsernamePending@reddit
My issue is that I can’t use my credit card as primary insurance for turo.
bnuts85@reddit
Your car insurance may cover rentals. Mine did when I had the joy of renting a vehicle on turo and cracking its windshield within 10 mins of picking it up. It was kind of annoying to deal with but cost me my normal $100 glass deductible
NewUsernamePending@reddit
It does, but the response below is why I prefer credit card primary on rentals. My insurance will jack up my rates if I use the glass deductible.
speed_demon24@reddit
It's nice having a credit card as primary insurance to keep it from jacking up your rates or messing with switching insurance in the future with a recent claim. Rental companies are notorious for trying to stick previous damage on you.
CayenneHybridSE@reddit
I rented an “Elite” class vehicle from Hertz which stated Audi A5 or similar, and when I go to the counter and asked to see the options, they said I could take any luxury branded vehicle outside of the Escalade or G-Wagon. They had Boxster GTS and I was able to take that for $50 a day
Porcshanc@reddit
Where have you been able to get these cars? I’ve tried getting them in several different countries and have never seen anything even remotely as luxurious as these
hi_im_bored13@reddit
lax, orlando, austin, all the major cities have a few. And then I travel often for work and have benefits with my credit card, so I often get upgraded into something nice.
Porcshanc@reddit
Nice, I’m from Ireland and have been everywhere in Europe and they haven’t got anything near as nice as the cars you mentioned 😟
quinnsterr@reddit
Things i have done with that logic
2014 E63 for $75 a day unlimited mileage for a trip from chicago to houston and back.
2018 C63s as my get around car during TX2k18
Challenger 392 for $32 a day for a week in phoenix. on this one i thought for sure they would put me in a V6, but no it was a 392 scatpack
constermonster@reddit
How are you getting such good rates?
TheWriteThingToDo@reddit
I've never seen rates that good unless it's a consistent corporate client.
quinnsterr@reddit
My amex upgrades me to the highest tier but all of these were just booking at the right time, the slow season at that location. Also the E63 was 10 years ago and the challenger was 6 years ago
ewerdna@reddit
What card offers that upgrade to the highest tier?
quinnsterr@reddit
amex platinum
thousand56@reddit
Which card? Been looking to get into a good benefit yearly fee one
Conch-Republic@reddit
I would not consider Amex if you're shopping around for a card. They're tanking, and a lot of places have stopped accepting them because of the exorbitant fees.
carsandgrammar@reddit
Where do you live? Just curious if this is regional. I use my AmEx almost exclusively, never run into an issue other than Costco.
Killbot_Wants_Hug@reddit
It's small businesses that don't like to accept them. I use to use an AmEx platinum and I got turned down from a few places when trying to pay with it. It's not super common, but it's also not surprising when it happens.
Also I believe most of those companies could run your AmEx through their payment gateway, they just chose not to accept them due to the fees.
carsandgrammar@reddit
I don't ever have trouble at small businesses, personally. But at my small business I just price the CC fees in and get on with my life. It's a massive expense so I'm occasionally tempted by the cash discount/CC charge but then I'd have to handle more cash and I'd worry about rubbing people the wrong way.
I also think my area (a little more affluent) kinda forces businesses to take AmEx.
ChainringCalf@reddit
Might also be regional, but the only place I've ever had an issue are Asian restaurants, very consistently. Otherwise all food goes on the Gold.
Monkeyswine@reddit
They always give chargebacks to customers, even obvious scammers. Many auto repair shops are no longer taking Amex, including mine.
carsandgrammar@reddit
Makes sense. I get very few chargebacks at my business but a handful of big ones would change my mind.
Monkeyswine@reddit
I only had one a few years back. It was pretty obvious so the local police told him to make it right or face theft of services charges.
Oskarikali@reddit
I've been using Amex for years in Canada without much issue, there have been a few places that don't accept Amex but it is usually little mom & pop shops.
dontnation@reddit
see if you qualify for the 150k bonus point amex platinum. Steep AF but worth the bonus and you can down grade after the first year.
constermonster@reddit
Plus you can frequently get a retention bonus, it’s pretty easy to always get your money back regardless of
Whitey90@reddit
Pre inflation prices, got it
Lauzz91@reddit
He gives great road-head
butterball85@reddit
Must be a client that brings in a lot of money. Look at his flair
warmpizz@reddit
He lies about it duh. Receipts or it didn't happen back up your BS.
RTRC@reddit
Or you end up like me who rented from the Escalade class only to get stuck in a QX80 with 50k miles on it.
middle-of-the-road-g@reddit
You got a qx80 instead of an Escalade and you complain?
RTRC@reddit
Getting stuck with a 14 year old platform with a dated interior and shitty infotainment isn't a valid reason to complain? The visible wear and tear at 50k miles was also bad.
middle-of-the-road-g@reddit
"dated interior" crap. Interiors are either good or bad, age isn't a factor unless the car is like 40+yo. "shitty infotainment" use your smartphone, you baby. And if these are your priorities instead of "is this thing reliable" then... Christ, no wonder cars are so bad now if this is the consumer market.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
why would I care about the reliability of a short term rental? If I paid for the escalade, I want an escalade or a similar experience, the pre-refresh qx80 & armada are a step down.
B5_S4@reddit
Spoken like someone who doesn't know shit about cars lmao.
RTRC@reddit
Oh look another teenager on reddit angry at somebody's opinion. You should fuck off and touch some grass buddy.
FixTheWisz@reddit
Any full-size GM or Ford is far better than the comparable Nissan/Infiniti, in my experience. This year I seem to always end up with Expedition Limiteds, though most years past I've gotten some version of the Yukhoelade. QX80, in comparison, just isn't good.
JF0909@reddit
Lucky you, I got stuck with an Armada
jagenigma@reddit
It's the same damn suv. It's lipstick on a pig.
an_actual_lawyer@reddit
I calculate rental miles at 250% of regular miles, so that QX80 was definitely used up.
Lawlessninja@reddit
That exact thing has happened to me on numerous occasions
Nitrothacat@reddit
A QX80 will do 130 mph though.
peakdecline@reddit
This wouldn't bug me at all, frankly. Other than the outdated tech in the QX80 prior to its refresh it was absolutely just as comfortable and luxurious as the Escalade. And significantly better built.
poopoomergency4@reddit
so that's where all the qx80s are going... for a second i thought people were actually buying them
Educational_Lab9100@reddit
Enterprise does as well but only in certain markets like nyc and Miami
nauticalfiesta@reddit
Sixt is a better company and frequently has those same cars. The only problem is they're much smaller, so not as easy to rent from. But 10/10 avoid Hertz.
thatgymdude@reddit
Sixt is a great way to drive all the new BMWs lol, you can pretty much drive almost the brand's entire lineup.
thatgymdude@reddit
It is not worth potentially getting a false arrest on your record when they "forget" they rented to you and call the cops for grand theft.
Reaps21@reddit
Agreed. Keep an eye out for "Luxury special" deals at enterprise through expedia (naybe other places too). I travel to Florida a lot and I needed a rental. Booked a $100 a day special where you didn't know the car but knew the category of vehicle.
Got to Florida, go to check out counter, they are unusually stringent on insurance, license and cc. Walk out to the lot and it was a new Maserati with a couple of thousand of miles on it. Had a lot of fun with that car on the weekend.
WestonP@reddit
Limited locations and super unreliable availability. Tried to do this for business purposes, reserved the specific car, but nobody at the facility had a damn clue, then eventually I was told it's not available and given a Nissan Versa. FML
blue_bomber697@reddit
I rented their Shelby GT-H in Vegas last year for a couple of days for my wife. That vehicle was so beat the shit, I couldn’t believe they had it on the lot, Nevermind giving that to a Hertz President circle member. I made my issues known when I returned the rental (tried to switch it beforehand but they didn’t have a different one available that day) and was just told to fill out the online form. Filled it out, never got a callback from support. Terrible experience with Hertz and their “premium” cars.
SenorBallbag@reddit
Where are the GTR’s?
hi_im_bored13@reddit
https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/misc/index.jsp?targetPage=nissan_gt_r.jsp
I don’t know if they still do it. But i got it for 99$/day years back
vpat48@reddit
Rest of the locations I understand but why do St. Louis get GTR’s?
Roast_A_Botch@reddit
5th largest metro in the country, convergence of several federal highways and large interstates, almost dead center of the nation by population(meaning the average of where people live in the country is statistically closer to it than anywhere else in the country).
Due to segregation and racism, St. Louis City and St. Louis County were separated like a century ago, and they're relatively small with large counties only 15 minutes away from the Arch having hundreds of thousands of residents. So, while St. Louis City only has a couple hundred thousand residents there's 2.8 million people living in the 66 square miles that makes up the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and there's less traffic and snow than Chicago.
solo118@reddit
yup got a 911 vert for like $140 after taxes/fees for 1 day
JMKJMKJMKJMK@reddit
Yeah good luck finding those to rent, MCO barely has anything nice.
HonorRoll@reddit
Where are these GTRs you speak of?!
TenesmusSupreme@reddit
This is the same company who filed stolen car police reports against customers when cars were returned successfully, but Hertz misplaced their own inventory.
Hertz hits customers with stolen car reports
txmail@reddit
How did they even get the police to help? A rental is never stolen, only returned late. It is the same reason people renting out their cars are at insane risks of just having them never returned. You can go to court and sue the "renters" for unpaid rental fees but it is all a civil matter. You are better off repossessing the vehicle yourself, though that could also put you in legal trouble.
BeingRightAmbassador@reddit
Not really. It can be stolen if you don't talk to them about your plans with their property. Just like how you can't squat on an airbnb just because you wanted to stay longer.
txmail@reddit
Tell that to the hordes of AirBnB squatters. Some of the evictions are quite entertaining.
BeingRightAmbassador@reddit
Your own comment acknowledges that it's not legal, just something they do
TenesmusSupreme@reddit
From the article: “They regularly think their cars have been stolen, and have reported them stolen, when they still had the cars and were renting them out,” Leff wrote. “That got their customers arrested, sometimes at gunpoint, and then they’ve been unwilling to retract false police reports out of fear that the retractions would lead police to stop trusting their false reports.”
Hertz has been known to do this frequently
txmail@reddit
I read that, what I am saying is why is the Police even taking action here? It is a civil matter -- they are basically being used as rent-a-cop's somehow, someone is greasing palms for a personal police force to take action on a civil matters.
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit
Hertz is a big company that is in bed with huge automakers and their lending arms so it wouldn't ar all surprise me if there were some dealings under the table or something. But what is likely is the police are just responding to calls about vehicle thefts or have the license plate readers pick up a passing vehicles license plate as stolen because Hertz reported it. The officers on the ground likely don't know the backstory just that their plate readers alerted a stolen vehicle
txmail@reddit
I get what you are saying now. Seems like those renters would have an easy lawsuit and the DA would have a slam dunk case of filing falsified police reports.
FloridaMan_Unleashed@reddit
They have been sued over it, and had to pay out $168m.
txmail@reddit
Justified.
Darkendevil@reddit (OP)
Conversion is still theft even if Hertz is in the wrong.
Sun_Aria@reddit
I received a letter from Hertz three weeks after turning in a rental; it stated they would take legal action for not returning the car. Luckily I took pictures of the car at drop off because I knew they were a shady company. Unfortunately I had to use Hertz those few days because all other car rental services were booked up.
BM7-D7-GM7-Bb7-EbM7@reddit
One thing I was always confused about here... I always thought when you rent something to someone and they don't return it, it becomes a civil matter and is not a criminal matter. It's because you've given them permission to take it, they just never returned it. Not unlike a bank loaning out money: they lent you the money, you just never returned it. The bank doesn't call the cops on you when you quit paying on a maxed out credit card.
So is Hertz calling the cops and reporting these cars as straight up stolen? Like "This person walked on to our lot and took this car without our permission!" If so, why haven't the state attorney generals gotten involved or a massive lawsuit been filed against Hertz by people this has happened to? This is basically filing a false police report unless I'm missing something here.
Smart_Dumb@reddit
Back when I worked at Enterprise, a car had to be missing for 30 days before we reported it stolen. This was to prevent customers from getting pulled over by the cops by our mistake. Enterprise is so large and self-insured that the negative press was not worth the occasional missing car.
essjay2009@reddit
Happened to me. It didn't quite get to the police stage but I was getting threatening letters from them. I live in the UK, rented in the US, returned on time to the US, yet they were accusing me of stealing the car.
I'm a President's Circle member with them, I've spent tens of thousands over hudnreds of rentals, and it made to difference. Staggering incompetence.
matthieuC@reddit
> Hope they go out of business.
They went bankrupt 4 years ago. Wasn't enough
OkDirection8015@reddit
I’m shocked that they came back to business and still continue to screw up all the time lol.
durdensbuddy@reddit
I just rented a vehicke, they gave me one with 50k miles, smelt like crap, grime all over the inside and there was a cockroach in the cup holder. I got them to swap for one marginally better, but it’s disgusting dirty and super high mileage, I won’t rent from them again.
huhwhat90@reddit
I straight up refuse to rent from them. I've read so many sketchy stories that it's turned me off from ever renting from them.
fiero-fire@reddit
I'm pretty sure the field for bankruptcy last year and got bought up again by a shittier private equity firm
jrileyy229@reddit
It's clearly not in one month... It sounds like the hertz.employee says "3 months" as the guy is talking over him.
We also didn't get the full story. They have specific rates and terms for Uber/door dash rentals. If he didn't disclose that is the use, and they pull up the GPS and see it was clearly used in that manner, then whatever agreement he signed is voided anyway
irishpwr46@reddit
Think he got any oil changes over that period?
beamdriver@reddit
I don't see why it's worth arguing with the Hertz counter person. Just dispute the charge and go on with your life.
merlot2K1@reddit
Yeah, I would have called my CC company right away to have them deny the charge. Hopefully he did just that after the video ended.
ctruvu@reddit
because it might be less hassle to just get the counter person to drop it
honestly though i dont know why a person making like $10 an hour to stand all day gives a shit about trying to win 10k for a billion dollar company
piddydb@reddit
A lot of credit card companies will not allow a dispute to go through if you didn’t dispute with the provider if you had the opportunity like this case
Conscious-Lobster60@reddit
Is the Merchant giving you a notarized form signed by a neutral third-party that you "disputed" the charge with them?
All you have to do is check a box or tell AMEX that you tried to resolve the issue with the Merchant. Then the chargeback goes through, they'll contest once or twice, then force it into arbitration and they finally give up.
piddydb@reddit
AMEX is famously permissive with chargebacks, so maybe that experience is more care free than most. But all it takes is you say you disputed at the time when you didn’t, vendor disputes that with video evidence, and you could be looking at credit card fraud. Just not worth that when the alternative is trying to work on that bill at the counter a little.
HighHokie@reddit
I’d give it all of 2 minutes. Walk in get the individuals name or manager. State your opinion. They say no. And then leave.
somedude456@reddit
But that would be a call with a corporate office. Yelling at some bottom of the barrel desk jocky won't get shit done.
Let me charge you.
File a charge back/call your card.
Call up Hertz corporate and ask them to fix things.
Back to chatting with your card company.
IAMheretosell321@reddit
amex gang rise up
ShadyDrunks@reddit
Not that easy at this point, his remedy will likely be filing a suit for breach of contract, possibly an intentional tort for charging the credit card without questioning him before hand too? Especially if there’s damages which here there will surely be
lowstrife@reddit
How many of these stories do we have to read time and time again before people just stop renting from this company. Sure, it's some mega corp and clearly this is just some guy working at $17\hr and it's ultimately up to him. But it keeps happening again, and again.
When is the last time you saw a story of like a Enterprise fucking someone over?
snubda@reddit
I dunno they gave me a pretty shitty Ford Escape last week…
saraphilipp@reddit
Enterprise.....we'll fuck you up!
bravoromeokilo@reddit

Also they just layed-off my mom, so they can extra suck a butt. HR isn’t important when you don’t care about humans.
Darkendevil@reddit (OP)
Was inspired to post this after Steve Lehto made a youtube video about it. Just another reason to hate Hertz.
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
I rent from National all the time and never had a problem.
One time I even had a car come with damage before I took drove it away (and I took photos). When I got back I showed the guy so they wouldn't charge me and the guy goes "oh well don't mind little stuff like that, you're good." Always have an awesome experience.
Meanwhile the one time I rented from Hertz they walked around the car multiple times and tried to blame me for every little thing on it.
ahhter@reddit
My only real gripe with National is that they don't seem to handle their popularity well and struggle to keep an inventory of cars. I'm more commonly running into situations where there's only a couple cars in the aisle ready to go and some locations are often sold out (like PHX). That said they're still hands-down the best option.
inheritthefire@reddit
Every time this has happened to me, they will give me an upgrade to the executive or even one of their premium cars. I'm not an executive aisle member, but I've gotten plenty of Challengers, Audi, BMW, etc. when they run out of "normal" cars.
ahhter@reddit
Thing is I am an Exec member - most of the time the exec aisle is just some Malibus/Camrys they moved over from the regular aisle.

Beginning_Ad8663@reddit
Put all rentals on an amex card. Then when hertz told me that they were charging me. I would have said no your not taken out my phone called amex’s fraud department explained the situation. Problem solved.
Apprehensive_Shoe360@reddit
Both sides have a point, aside from Hertz’s behavior. Unlimited miles means just that. My question is did he have the car serviced. If he never changed the oil in 25,000 miles, then I see why Hertz has a point. There goes $25,000 on a $1,200 rental. Again, this falls on Hertz. They should have swapped him out to service the car, or tell the customer to service it and reimburse him.
PoniesPlayingPoker@reddit
Lol anyone who still rents Hertz is a fucking idiot.
boiled-yakitori@reddit
??? I get amazing rates with President's Circle and usually get a nice Volvo for $30-50 a day.
wimpires@reddit
100% the car was used for commercial purposes or something else dodgy was taking place.
kramfive@reddit
Most car rentals are for commercial purposes. I’m renting two cars this week, for work. Not prohibited.
ctruvu@reddit
probably meant commercial as in using for doordash or turo
kramfive@reddit
Commercial auto is all of the above. You are describing the type of use, and there are A LOT of commercial auto rating basis codes. That’s a whole other level of detail that isn’t referenced in rental contracts.
mishap1@reddit
Dude probably has a whole TikTok channel dedicated to adventures of driving 1,000 miles/day.
25k in a month would be well beyond regular maintenance cycles and he'd be responsible for damages if he ignored the maintenance minder or check engine lights.
They have telematics on most of their fleet so I'd guess they knew this thing was racking up crazy miles the whole way.
I'm not much for false advertising but this guy likely destroyed the car from abuse which is definitely listed in the rental agreement.
Fekillix@reddit
I'm curious if this is actually in the contract.
BeingRightAmbassador@reddit
Yeah it is, just because it's a rental doesn't mean you can drive on the rim, drive through a whole service interval, or other negligent things.
jdore8@reddit
I rented a car for a week years ago & the second or third day the oil change light came on. I kept driving it & returned it without issue.
Recently I rented for a week and by the end of the first day the check engine light came on. I returned it as well without issue. YMMV
Possible_Bullfrog844@reddit
I once drove a car for like 3 weeks across the country, 19k miles, ignored the change oil light thinking I could make it back to the starting location, ending up hearing a clunking sound coming out of the engine and losing power, pulled over on the shoulder, and the super hot oil leaking out of it started a fire in the super dry grass and I had to call the fire department and then get it towed to the nearest rental, got a free new rental with almost no questions asked.
mishap1@reddit
Oil change light for a couple days isn't going to destroy the car so they don't care but letting them know isn't a bad idea as they'll mark it out to send it to service.
During Covid, they would rent out cars that needed some service b/c they were that short. More than a few times, I'd just take a photo of the grease pen markings on the back window to make sure they didn't try to bug me about it.
Much more annoying is if the tire goes flat after you leave. Tough to prove you didn't run over something if they want to be bitchy about it. I once called one in that was definitely leaking within a few miles and they wanted to charge me for roadside/tow so I just told them I'm going to swap to the spare and they can deal with it in two days.
gimpwiz@reddit
I had the same happen - dealing with a tire that had an issue before I picked it up. Obnoxious.
NEp8ntballer@reddit
For my job I once had a long term rental car. I had to send them the mileage each month and when it was due for an oil change they gave me a few options to get it taken care of. I took it in on my own time and was reimbursed for the cost of the oil change from one of their preferred service centeres. I think the other option was to drop it off and get a different car of the same type.
bigev007@reddit
The Hertz terms say you have to bring it back every 28 days and follow any warning lights, so that sounds like a yes
mishap1@reddit
I think there are different versions depending on the company w/ some of them w/ very basic abuse language but Hertz definitely has some stuff about keeping an eye on service items if going longer distances.
When renting long term, I know some companies want it back in to swap out for maintenance and to make sure you're not completely destroying the car. Either way, he'll lose pretty easily if he actually drove it that far without getting it serviced by Hertz along the way.
copy_run_start@reddit
Listening to the video it sounds to me like he says "25,000 miles in x months," maybe three months?
25k miles in a month is wild... 830 miles a day for 30 days, traveling 52 miles every hour for sixteen hours each one of those days?
olek2012@reddit
How stupid is this company? They should be leaning into it and using this for advertising. The copy writes itself:
“When we say unlimited mileage, we mean unlimited.”
Obviously most people will only drive a few hundred miles max with their rental cars. But knowing that they have the option to drive as far as they want is what people want for peace of mind. This could’ve been worth so much in building a positive image with their customers. The whole point of a rental car is that you want a seamless trouble free experience with no extra fees.

Their policy is unlimited for everything but certain luxury and sports cars, which makes this story weird. I guess it's a really bad agent?
I've put 10K miles in a month on Hertz rentals several times without issues.
IAmTaka_VG@reddit
You’ve driven 10k miles in a month? You’ve driven 500 miles a day assuming you took weekends off? Please show me any proof because I think you’re full of shit.
We’re talking 12-16 hour shifts of nonstop highway driving.
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
Covid restrictions were a nightmare for my business. It was basically shoot one day, drive 600+ miles the next, and repeat, straight through for month at a time.
The only upside was that there wasn't tons of traffic, which saved a lot of drive time.
olek2012@reddit
Dang that is awesome! Good job man.
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
I did it a few times in late 2020, early 2021. Was super exhausting, but made enough money to more than cover lost income from the lockdown.
The most annoying part was realizing Chevy Tahoe (the previous gen, not the current one) has an off-center steering wheel. It got awkward when driving that much.
ctruvu@reddit
is that not something an alignment would have taken care of?
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
I don't mean off center that way. I mean you're sitting in the driver's seat, the wheel is physically aligned to a couple inches to the right of the seat.
It's slight enough to not be obvious, but once you figure it out (and why you're arms aren't even), it's a major drag.
ctruvu@reddit
oh that’s actually mentally ill lol never would have thought that was even an option
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
I noticed it a couple hundred miles into a 5,000 mile trip. I'm left handed so the offset to the right made it really annoying.
TheRealPizza@reddit
wHeRe iS ThE pROof!?!?
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
I've got some 92 proof gin cooling in the freezer for tonight.
SNRatio@reddit
As mentioned upthread, did the rental company have language about bringing the car back for maintenance in the contract?
During the pandemic I could see them letting that slide. Rental companies were selling off their fleets trying to avoid bankruptcy.
Holiday_Parsnip_9841@reddit
Hertz didn't back then. Not sure what it's now.
pullmytailplz@reddit
Shut up, retard
ilovestoride@reddit
I put 4000 miles on a luxury car over a week once. It started as a premium car with unlimited miles and at the counter they upgraded me to luxury but on the printed receipt, they left the unlimited miles line item on it by accident.
They wanted to charge me $1 per mile over the 100 a day. I threatened to go to court over false advertising cause clearly the clerk gave me a receipt that said I had unlimited miles. Spent 30 min at the counter with the manager on the phone with corporate and they said they'll waive it as a "one time thing".
postitpad@reddit
I have argued with customer service reps about points on their website and found the website shortly after… twice.
WiretapStudios@reddit
Same here, multiple different ones too.
GothGirlStink@reddit
If this is the story i think it is (not clicking) this cocksucker drove 25,000 miles in one month
Muggi@reddit
Hertz sucks, and as a regular business traveler I would never use them (Sixt FTW), but there is absolutely more to this story.
nauticalfiesta@reddit
I love Sixt, but we get such an amazing price with our corporate rate and can use it for personal use with National its hard to change. Plus the grab whatever you want has let me drive some really fun vehicles that I would normally not get to drive. (also has led to a few mini vans when there's nothing left.)
Muggi@reddit
Yeah the “grab whatever” thing is fun, the times I’ve used National I’ve really appreciated that.
JF0909@reddit
I love sixt and I wish they had a location near me. Last time I was in Florida I rented a mid size SUV and they offered me a BMW iX.
Flaky-Show-7574@reddit
I can’t rock with Sixth. They claimed that my license was fake and then refused to issue a refund for my reservation. Had to fight them for a month to get my money back.
Muggi@reddit
Damn, that sucks. I've been with them for a long time, since they were a super-tiny chain in South FL; never had a bad experience and their cars always seem to have the best models. But yeah, if they'd fucked with me like that i wouldn't be with em either
saraphilipp@reddit
Dude they were reporting cars stolen that were appropriately returned and cops were arresting people at their homes for gta. Don't give them your business. Here you go! you've been warned.
Muggi@reddit
I think you misread my post. I go nowhere near Hertz - I rent from Sixt. The video you posted is about Hertz.
saraphilipp@reddit
Poops. I thought that was slang for hertz.
Muggi@reddit
Haha nah Sixt is a smaller but rapidly growing rental company. All good
mishap1@reddit
Avis sucks horribly but we have our corporate account with them so I've rented something like 400 cars through them at this point.
I rented a BMW X3 through Sixt once for a personal trip. Noticed the sunroof wouldn't open so I mentioned it to them upon return. They tried to claim that I cracked the sunroof glass. I submitted in the form that I was the one that told them the sunroof didn't move but it wasn't something I tested on the way out the door. They wound up not charging me for it but was still far more stress than necessary.
jtbis@reddit
Honestly I think that would be an easy credit card dispute in the customers favor. You quite literally have a contract that says unlimited miles on it. Unless the renter was doing something against terms like driving outside of the US/Canada, I don’t think there’s even an argument there.
RhitaGawr@reddit
If you advertise "unlimited", it's fucking unlimited. How difficult is that?
the_nin_collector@reddit
Hertz is a scam buisness. I can not understand how they are still in businesses. The fact they are listed with Enterprise and Avis when searching for a rental car is infuriating.
They will upcharge you without asking. Upgrade you without asking. Customer support is atrocious.
for people who don't rent often, Enteripise and Hertz seem like very similar companies.
One is a decent company. The other is a 3 Cups Mante scam company.
I went on a trip.
Needed a car for 5 days, final bill, $550, Enterprise. Needed a car for 24 hours. Hetrz, $550. Of course when I did price matching it was only 175. But they fucked me that bad. No one at the Hertz store would help me. They told me to fuck off basically. After an hour waiting on the phone I asked for a refund of the difference, they gave it to me. It was so easy, I can only assume it happens ALL the time and they know it was fraud. They charged me for things I never signed, agreed to, or asked for. It was 100% fraud. Not everyone will sit on the phone for an hour. So they take the chance.
iroll20s@reddit
I know someone who did something similar. Put something like 20k miles on over about a month or two. Nothing ever came of it. I should ask if he got banned at least.
frostrambler@reddit
Hertz is awfully incompetent. I rented a Tesla with a friend for a 3 day trip from the jfk airport hertz. We received a price of 200 something for 3 days with insurance. When we went to pick up the car, the expected bill was 400 dollars. I told them that it was double what my rental charge online was. They refused to do anything and claimed the insurance was higher since it’s electric. I had to spend 3 hours on the phone with corporate and the manager of the station to get the price I paid for. When I finally returned 3 days later, it was still 80 dollars too high. I called corporate and raised a stink so they refunded my insurance charge completely. Ended up saving like 60 bucks from the initial price. It only cost me about 4 hours on the phone.
Never again, never ever ever again.
guyincognito69420@reddit
dispute the charge with the credit card company. They will charge back and if Hertz wants their money they can start a lawsuit. Fuck em.
nauticalfiesta@reddit
Hertz tried to bill me for damages to a rental car that I had for less than 12 hours. I got it at Seatac and dropped it off at a neighborhood office the next morning. I literally made one stop at a mcdonalds and they said the fender was scratched, the wheel covers scuffed, and damages to the front air dam. When I said I would provide my pictures of the car once they provided me their pictures (which they claimed to not have, until I reminded them they have cameras EVERYWHERE) their claim suddenly stopped.
I wouldn't even call it damages, it would be at best normal wear and tear on a rental car. I'll never rent from them again.
__BIOHAZARD___@reddit
Why does the agent even care?
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
I rent with National all the time and it's always great. Their customer service is top notch. Absolutely love them.
shadowkiller@reddit
At that point, just buy a car and resell it when you're done.
saudicheese@reddit
Wrong. The guy did the right thing. That’s what a rental car is for.
shadowkiller@reddit
You'd lose much less than $10k in depreciation.
funkmon@reddit
Yeah but he's not getting charged 10k for this ultimately.
saudicheese@reddit
Exactly. No way he gets charged 10k. And also some cars you might come close to losing that amount or maybe more even lol
Percolator2020@reddit
Hertz in the US is terrible, always crazy wait if they even have cars. Always try to upsell you some irrelevant shitS Always use the same excuse that the car just came back to give you some dirty car smelling of BO and cigarettes, and we should feel grateful.
TheCanadianShield99@reddit
I gave up on Hertz years ago. Customer service is practically non existent. You show up to pick up your rental and there are another 50 people waiting because they have no cars. They are pretty much incompetent 7/24.
