What piece of media from the UK do you wish got more attention from the rest of the world?

What movie, television show, or musical artist would you recommend to someone not from the UK?
cheandbis@reddit
Inside Number 9
I have no idea if it's popular outside of these Isles but i would guess it should translate well.
I've said it before but The 12 Days of Christine, for me, is the best 30 minutes of a self-contained story ever on TV. A masterpiece in how to tell a captivating and emotional story in half an hour.
c0tch@reddit
I keep wanting to watch it but then I see that guy from Benidorm and it puts me off
cheandbis@reddit
Never seen Benidorm, you mean Steve Pemberton? He's great in all he does in my opinion.
c0tch@reddit
I don’t know his name, just the show gives me mrs browns boys vibes. He wrote it I believe as well as acted in it.
It’s a show I’ve never understood I guess it’s for a different type of person.
jelloandjuggernauts@reddit
I never thought I'd see Inside No. 9 compared to Mrs Brown's Boys, but here we are!
c0tch@reddit
No im not comparing that to mrs browns boys im comparing Benidorm to it but a lesser evil.
I’ve never seen it so I can’t compare them. It’s just Benidorm was that sorta show where it appealed to those types who watch mrs browns boys just it’s not the worst thing ever.
I just hear a lot about it but him being in it made me worry he wrote it like he wrote Benidorm and therefore it’s going to be painful for me
Lamenter_@reddit
Steve Pemberton didn't write Benidorm, Derren Litten did.
c0tch@reddit
Oh really? I thought he wrote and starred in it my bad
InviteAromatic6124@reddit
Give it a chance it's nothing like Benidorm it's a dark anthology series similar to Black Mirror and Tales of the Unexpected. Well worth a watch!
c0tch@reddit
Awesome I’ll give it a go then when I’m done with the wire
kc321363@reddit
So so brilliant. Criminally underrated.
mordhoshogh@reddit
I was a wreck for about a week after that episode
knight-under-stars@reddit
The 1994 masterpiece album Troublegum by the Northern Irish band Therapy?.
To be honest their two follow ups (Infernal Love and Semi-detached) are bloody brilliant too.
Had these guys been American they would have been one of the biggest metal bands of the 90's.
OddlyDown@reddit
They are touring Troublegum for its 30th anniversary right now! :)
knight-under-stars@reddit
Indeed they are, I have tickets for two dates.
OddlyDown@reddit
I have tickets. I’ve seen them more than any other band, I think…
knight-under-stars@reddit
I think they are probably second for me. Easily over 10 times.
Number one is probably Reel Big Fish, but then my buddy and I got it in our heads it would be cool to go to every date on one tour. Ended up drinking at the bar with the band one night which was cool.
forfar4@reddit
It's amazing, the bands we latch on to. My most -seen band is Cardiacs (17 times), Rammstein (14 times) and then Super Furry Animals (9 times). Try explaining *that" list to someone who "likes a nice tune..."
Hankstudbuckle@reddit
Upvote for Cardiacs. I've only seen them about ten times I think.
forfar4@reddit
Hiya, fellow Pondie!
g0ldcd@reddit
I am both looking forward to attending and cursing them for making me feel so old.
daddy-dj@reddit
My claim to fame is I got called a cunt by Andy Cairns at the Phoenix Festival in '93 (I think). To be fair to him, I had just spilled a pint glass of water over him not long before they were due to go on stage, so it was probably merited.
forfar4@reddit
I think it was that year that I - a rocker - wandered into a tent when Utah Saints were playing and fell in love with a "dance band". Incredible band, live.
bubble12133@reddit (OP)
Ill definitely check this out, seems right up my alley. Thanks!
chris_282@reddit
You might also enjoy Earth Vs The Wildhearts.
Ginger Wildheart is a national treasure.
forfar4@reddit
"My Baby Is A Headfuck" is a tour de force of creative guitar playing. Love that Ginger is a Cardiacs fan.
Have to admit that on hearing the song several times at a loud Rock club, I thought it was called "My Baby Is A Bedbug". It didn't make sense until I saw the record in a shop...
DW_555@reddit
Bloody love The Wildhearts, can't wait for the new album to come out.
knight-under-stars@reddit
My pleasure, let me know what you think when you get round to it 🤘
forfar4@reddit
I was mistaken for the lead singer in a noisy Rock club. I explained that I wasn't the guy but this gorgeous Goth-looking girl in vinyl miniskirt, corset and fishnet stockings said, "Ah... Close enough..." and so I owe that lead singer a debt of gratitude for one of the most biologically accommodating encounters of my life.
ignatiusjreillyXM@reddit
Screw that, forget about that, I don't wanna know about anything like that 😀
Agreed they were brilliant and deserved more success than they had. Still one of the most revelatory gigs I went to was back in 1991 was Hole, supported by Therapy?, with PJ Harvey (who had just released their first single) third on the bill. Hole were really shit that night, but the other two acts were utterly outstanding....
JackMythos@reddit
Gonna check them out
Tom_Tower@reddit
One of my favourite albums of all time. Absolutely incredible. Really looking forward to seeing them live.
Noesfsratool@reddit
Checked them out, wouldn't call them a metal band tho.
chris_282@reddit
They killed at Donington Monsters of Rock '94, so we gave them a pass.
Noesfsratool@reddit
Yeah very 90s alt rock vibe
skippergimp@reddit
I swear I have never heard drums hit as hard as they were on Sreamager. How those drums weren’t torn I will never know.
JackMythos@reddit
The UK Hip-Hop scene, I like Grime too but the homegrown Hip-Hop scene was always more my thing. Jehst, Kashmere, Ramson BadbonezRoots Manuva, Skinnyman, Task Force and a dozen other names I’m forgetting where the soundtrack to my life in a way the more mainstream UK artists never have been.

Still Game.
North of the border, it's cherished, but nobody else seems to know it exists (or can understand it)
Paulstan67@reddit
It is good, but yes it's incredibly difficult to understand (for a hard of hearing Stopfordian at least).
Lessarocks@reddit
Yeah a fair few of my friends have comprehension issues. It spoils the flow when they have to ask me what was said.
Paulstan67@reddit
I'm a little deaf anyway so subtitles are on all the time to help me out.
Shoddy_Juggernaut_11@reddit
Ya prick
DrDaxon@reddit
I live in Bedford and binged watched it - my wife who’s Polish also enjoyed it, so it’s now officially internationally recognised. May I recommend a polish short film on Netflix called “fanatyk” - you can watch with subtitles, also amazing dry humour

Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
any scottish ties?
I'm an exiled southerner to the north with Glaswegian parents, so Scottish culture was forced upon me.
Fred776@reddit
No strong ties. Even though my grandad was from Glasgow I never really knew him.
I have always enjoyed my visits to Scotland though - I haven't been all that many times, but I'd like to see a lot more of it.
JudgeWhoOverrules@reddit
This is one of my favorite pieces of UK media.

“She was like a candle in the wind. Unreliable” - I’ve not seen this in years! It’s hilarious but I don’t know many people who have seen it.

I own a Dukla Prague away kit. I never got my hands on a tour jacket with detachable sleeves, though.
"The Ballad of Climie Fisher" always makes me smile and, for me, the wittiest record title, beating Butthole Surfers "Hairway to Steven" into second place is HMHB's "Trouble Over Bridgewater" - just genius. In fact, the Surfers are beaten into third place by a local musician who released an EP about the Christmas Day football match on No Man's Land in the First World War, entitled "God Rest Ye, Jerry Mental Men".

Blackadder Goes Forth
danddersson@reddit
I (probably alone) think the first series was one of the best. It was before all the tiresome Baldrick 'catchphrases' and had some really funny episodes.
forfar4@reddit
Agreed. The similes ("As cunning as a...") just sounded laboured to me.
AdAffectionate2418@reddit
I actually think the writing is better in the first series, but Atkinson's fool (amazing as it is) just never quite worked in the context. Having him, instead, be surrounded by idiots made the whole premise stick together much better.
danddersson@reddit
Fair comment. I don't think the series would/could have the legs it did without the change.
DarrenTheDrunk@reddit
I prefer season 3, the fact that some people seem to view Blackadder Goes Forth almost as a documentary somewhat irks me.
Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
I watched Blackadder: The Cavalier Years for the first time ever today actually, it's on youtube.
Really funny as well, Stephen Fry playing Charles 1st doing an impression of Charles 3rd. Was really good! only 15 mins long.

Breakwaterbot@reddit
I'm pretty sure it gets plenty of attention all around the world.
Drewski811@reddit
It should get more, is my point
Gmotherlovin@reddit
Why? I honestly think people only find this funny because they think they’re supposed to
Drewski811@reddit
Everybody's sense of humour is different, that's fine.
I personally find it an absolute classic example of British humour executed perfectly.
Few-Inevitable-332@reddit
Red dwarf, come fly with me and most non linear UK shows. Modern family can’t hold a piss soaked candle to come fly with me, Benidorm, Friday night dinner etc. then you have the sketch shows. Little Britain, Mitchell and Webb, Bo selecta, phone jacker, fry and Laure Never mind outnumbered, black adder, bottom and only fools and horses our tiny island is the comedy capital of earth and I’d love to hear an argument that disputes my point
ignatiusjreillyXM@reddit
"One Summer" a four-part drama from 1983 by Willy Russell (about he disagreed with some of the casting decisions, so dissociated himself from it for a time) about two tough lads from Liverpool growing up fast. Beautiful scenes in the North Welsh countryside, and a haunting soundtrack that is as filled with melancholy as the plot.
It's fantastic but barely known

It had some really unique sketches, and the mix of surrealism & comedy made it feel completely unique. The casting was also perfect.
