Local. Anyone else sick and tired of staring at their phone while waiting?

I drive local. Some days I’m waiting for docks half of my day, especially Tuesdays. I have a pillow in my daycab so I just sit back against the door and stare at my phone. Reddit, TikTok, NewsBreak, Facebook…I’ve read books before but when I finish it I don’t feel like starting a new one… TikTok just provides way too much dopamine that nothing else compares. After the day sometimes I wish I had a flip phone lol. Any of you know of some free courses or books to listen to or read? Or what do you do ?
scottiethegoonie@reddit
Write.
Even if you're shitty at it and it feels pointless. It's mentally stimulating and at the end of the day you have produced something instead of just consuming things.
Resident-Sherbert-89@reddit
I have a deer pusher on the front, i'll drop it down and use it as a curling bar, also for dips. i use the steps for pushups bc i can't do as many regular ones.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Every single one of our tractors have deer pushers on besides mine. I didn’t want one because I’m in the city so much and that little extra in the front makes a difference lol but that’s a good one. I haven’t seen any of my coworkers do that.. we’re all pretty fuckin lazy
Juniverse1@reddit
Get a degree. Or two. In a topic that you're interested in. But seriously. Or make it a PHD while you're at it.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Did you get one? What it cost you?
Juniverse1@reddit
No, I haven't. I'm still working on taking care of a few more urgent things that I started this career to be able to afford. So it's more aspiration, less experience.
king_dainnn@reddit
how? could you elaborate?
Juniverse1@reddit

king_dainnn@reddit
thank you.
Juniverse1@reddit
Absolutely. I love when boredom accidentally results in self improvement. So I wish you the absolute best.
king_dainnn@reddit
same here. that's why i asked for details. thank you again and i wish you the best as well :)
king_dainnn@reddit
appreciated
dretastic21@reddit
Do people not read books anymore?
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
No just Reddit comments lol
MochaExplosion@reddit
At least most of you guys get to drive, I got a local job, and all mines consistent of is opening trailer doors, hooking them up to the little mechanism that automaticly unloads the trailer, and then I sit for 30mins to an hour.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
I only put on 100-150 miles a day so not much but I’m only averaging 40 mph, if that…
mzc36@reddit
Local and waiting on a dock right now. I just scroll and relax, enjoy the peace and quiet of it all. Can’t imagine getting sick of it really. Some days I’ll have a book with me. If I’m in a hurry it gets annoying sometimes waiting, but I try to keep it in perspective that I’m making very good money to sit on my ass, scroll Reddit, and respond to posts like this.
buckytuba1@reddit
When I ran local I was dedicated Walmart so I didn't really know what waiting was. Now I'm OTR and I spend half my life waiting for loads.
curiousbydesign@reddit
Mom?
seem92@reddit
Same, just got out of a registrational
RoadStocks@reddit
Get a steam deck and youre good lol
NekoboyBanks@reddit
I was just gonna say this. I love my deck.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
What’s a steam deck?
Duchess1992@reddit
Basically a handheld PC for gaming. It's like a more advanced Switch
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
I’ll def look into that thanks
DjBizwy@reddit
That or a Nintendo Switch. It is still a screen, but at least you are using your brain, solving puzzles, etc…Steam Deck gives you access to way more games, though, and that might be up your alley depending on your taste in games.
EVOChi@reddit
Google.com
TwoToadsKick@reddit
That is not a steam deck
dudeimgone@reddit
Beat me to it lol. I wish I had downtime on the clock like this my poor deck is neglected 😭
Salt_Bus2528@reddit
You can just stare at people. Directly, intently, attentively. It's guaranteed to fuck with people to the point they do something entertaining, like walk into the side of a trailer.
sorrytooffnd@reddit
I got coloring books and it’s a great escape and very relaxing, put on a podcast or some music while coloring is just great
Wheelman519@reddit
Learn to play a small instrument like a Ukulele. Mix it up. It does suck sitting there.

Drives me bonkers. I do local heavy hauling and occasionally have to wait hours for guys to finish with a machine to move it. "Cough cough most unions". I usually get about half an hour playing on my phone. 10 minutes of cleaning every speck of dust out of the truck. Then about 30 laps around the truck and trailer mumbling under my breath. Then I sit on the trailer and stare at the workers expressing my boredom. If it's still not ready at that point il go into the job site and just start asking people random questions and bother people untill they get pissed off and tell me to wait in the road. Occasionally il offer to help but if they actually give me something to do I go back and sit in my truck.
Ok_Measurement_107@reddit
Go to the liberry and get some books so you can get smrt like me
toxic_adventure@reddit
Watch a movie. Or do like I did and get a backbone and play Xbox games
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Does that just connect to your hotspot and your Xbox account ?
toxic_adventure@reddit
It runs on my phone data. And yes I play Xbox cloud games. It's badass
dudeimgone@reddit
If you like true crime, supernatural, or alien stuff and have a dark sense of humor check out Last Podcast on the Left! Tons of episodes and really informative. They've kept me company the whole time I've been trucking.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
I’ll check it out thanks!
TruckinTuba@reddit
That sounds awful, most I've waited for a load rack was 45 mins, and it's not often that it's that long
jmzstl@reddit
You could try and find a job that keeps you more active if it bothers you that much.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Pays too good.. free healthcare, ot , m-f… 10 years in already
suddenly_quinn@reddit
I hear the “I wish I had a flip phone” I miss those days.
But then again here I am sitting getting offloaded on Reddit
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Right exactly.. here I am sitting at home reading the comments when I said I wouldn’t be on it rest of the day 😂😂

Kahn academy on iPad, Brilliant app on iPhone, and reading books on my kindle.
I’ll sometimes watch series or movies. I’ll listen to podcasts and audio books.
And sometimes I just like to turn the engine off and wait in complete silence.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much. Exactly what I was looking for! I just downloaded KHAN .. looks like it’s completely free??
robexib@reddit
Yup. Khan Academy helped me make up for all the shit that I should've been taught in school but wasn't.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
I just looked thru some of the courses it’s pretty wild that it’s all free
InevitableUsual4126@reddit
I've got a tablet with a sim card and unlimited data hooked up to my phone plan. I use it to watch streaming and play my ps5 remote.
BanksBebop@reddit
Sometimes crank out alil workout in the cabin. Got me a laptop and steam deck to game too. If I'm bored of those I got plenty of books and a website to watch all the latest moves/TV shows.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
I’ve never heard of the steam deck I did now lol
JankyMark@reddit
Sounds like the good life to me
wukillabee2744@reddit
Mr Ballen on YouTube or any other podcast platform. He also has a bunch of other channels under his umbrella Ballen Studios. His channel is awesome with a shit ton of content
JankyMark@reddit
Mr ballen stories are awesome
Niko120@reddit
Download movies on Netflix. Get some curtains/sun visors to black out the truck, plug into the trucks audio crank it up. Think about how many other people who are at work wish that they were watching a movie right now instead of doing some other tedious bullshit
Uknow_nothing@reddit
That doesn’t sound bad at all if you’re being paid hourly. The first trucking job I had was hauling diesel, fleet refueling. One of the many reasons I quickly quit was that you basically have to sit there staring at each tank making sure it doesn’t overflow. So it’s boring as dirt, requires constant attention, and was overnight hours.
KaleyKingOfBirds@reddit
Time to lean time to clean. I find cleaning my cab and detailing is really stress relieving, rewarding, and dopimine inducing.
Plus if you get pulled over randomly, a squeaky clean cab gives a good impression.
ObsidianCrow73@reddit
stares you have FREE time???
kane_eightee@reddit
Duolingo. Learn a new language.
Limp-Boat-6730@reddit
Knit hats for charity. Takes 4-8 hours per hat. The pattern is easy. It can be put down and picked back up on a minute notice, and you have a hat when you’re done.
mebigRick@reddit
I’m there with you. Concrete truck driver though. I like podcasts. So many. So varied. No one can believe the amount of downtime. I had a few years where I went through about all of Netflix.
TheTallestTales@reddit
Get some kind of portable gaming handheld. Steam Deck, ROG ally, Legion Go or Nintendo Switch.
kell32669@reddit
Steam Deck, Nothing beats a little quite alone time
Passion-Interesting@reddit
I work for OD. If drivers are bullshittin around or shippers are taking to long, I ask them what the hold up is. If they can't answer I call dispatch. If dispatch okays me to burn out I take off. Fuck that. I'm not waiting for an hour at a shipper when I have 10 other local deliveries to make.
Sufficient_Tooth_949@reddit
Local and we don't have down time, its hustle hustle hustle, because as soon as we finish deliveries on our route we can go home, beverage service
Its a double edged sword, because some days you'll work a full 14 if they loaded us down, and that's a HARD 14 slinging around thousands of cases of beverages
FutureCorpse699@reddit
I’m local, but it’s very rare that I wait around. Maybe a couple hours a week. I haul fuel though. Most people just wanna get loaded and fuck off about their day… except hourly guys. Fuck those guys.
OldBrokeGrouch@reddit
I used that time to learn to be better at chess and I raised my elo from 600s 1200s over the course of a year.
hatosgoodvibes@reddit
Where do you start if u have 0 knowledge?
OldBrokeGrouch@reddit
Try chess.com. Download the app and start learning and playing against people around the world. You’ll be matched up based on your elo.

Use Language Transfer and learn a new language. They have a few to choose from, and it's 100% free.
bentstrider83@reddit
Got a lot of good reading in when I used to get tankers unloaded at either one of the three dairy facilities in my area. Between three and six hours being the longest depending on how backed up the facility silos were.
Insanitybymarriage@reddit
My husband is local and he took my Nintendo Switch. He plays Diablo 2 for hours on the clock while waiting. I get a kick out of him playing games all day and still getting a paycheck.
Particular_Minute_67@reddit
At that point he should just get his own switch.
PutridBeginning421@reddit (OP)
Yea I probably spend 3-4 hours a day just on TikTok and it’s frying my brain
Mixing_NH3_HCl@reddit
Local, but dedicated. I pick up a trailer, drive it, park at the oc, and return the empty the next day.
Rudyscrazy1@reddit
I have a nintendo switch, a tablet with netflix, and a hammock to hang between the doors. Bring a food warmer fod.warm food, and you're set. Im getting transferred to a brand new sleeper cab this week. Kinda nervy that i can't see out the back anymore.
Enigmatic54321@reddit
Libby app. Just need a library card then can check out audiobooks for free. I've listened to well over 100 over last couple years.
Enigmatic54321@reddit
Also app block or similar apps to it. Free versions allow you to block certain apps at certain times or whatever. Helps to regain control over the chemicals in your brain and their distribution. Lol.
Enigmatic54321@reddit
Also here's my goodreads profile. Looks at my ratings. The 5 stars are almost guaranteed to be good. 4 stars are pretty dang good most the time. I have handed out 3 and 2 stars which I won't recommend without knowing what kind of books you enjoy. Many of these I listened to on Libby but I also try and read the really great ones. They deserve it. The reading experience can be even more powerful than the listening.
gotcha_six@reddit
I try to accomplish any chores I can do remote during this kind of down time. For example setting up a grocery order so I don't have to spend an hour in the store. I also spend the time researching and deal hunting on things I was going to purchase anyway.
hatosgoodvibes@reddit
I’m thinking about doing another job while Im doing this, I just need to figure out what I could do. I feel like I could easily dispatch 3-5 OTR trucks like booking loads, send rate cons, track & trace or deal with brokers & customers. Im work on a switcher truck from 4AM to 4PM with plenty of downtime especially nowadays. So if any owner ops here need some help PM me I have experience as dispatcher & driving too.

Outlandah_@reddit
You should get off your phone. Or, learn a language, or, take a vacation! Haha
SkinnyG80@reddit
Get out and walk around, explore, I do that sometimes, other than that get a tablet with a good data plan, if it's somewhere that takes a couple hours watch a movie
BobdeBouwer__@reddit
Maybe just go on a little walk? Sit in the sun? But yes wasting time on the phone is too easy.
PlanetExpress310@reddit
As a local driver getting paid hourly, I'm okay with catching up on things on my phone. Once I'm done, I just put on a podcast, and I'm good to go.
OsBaculum@reddit
A Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck might be nice. I play BotW to relax, but there are a bunch of other offline options you could try.
