Election Day Issues

At the chapel of the holy cross on Cole they are having major issues printing ballots. They said internet providers across the county are having issues making it hard to verify IDs and print ballots. Got in line at 6:30 am. Was maybe 25th in line. Still waiting.
Are all locations struggling? I'm seeing many people leave and say they can't wait longer. It kills me that this is going to impact turnout.
Fantasticalreality@reddit
I was presiding judge at one of the locations and can confirm - it was a connection issue affecting ballot printing and voter verification. Horrendous way to spend a 14 hour day.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your dedication to the voters of this county!
Fantasticalreality@reddit
I was happy to do it! I truly thing everyone should do it at least once.
Ok_Zombie-949@reddit
Trump told y'all to vote early this time. Listen to the man. He knows much more than we do.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
So he predicted that there would be issues voting? Well shit. I didn't realize Nostradamus was on the ballot. I hope I can go back and change my answer.
"He knows much more than we do" ... Who is we? Talk about cult of personality. Wtf lol
DifficultyCharming78@reddit
Yeah they think he's god. Its so dumb.
Ok_Zombie-949@reddit
Who’s yo daddy now bitch? Fo years is what’s up!
SiriusSlytherinSnake@reddit
Well if that isn't suspicious I don't know what is. If someone tells me with certainty that something like this will happen, makes the average person think they have something to do with it. Or at the least, had prior knowledge and purposely did nothing.
alexsummers@reddit
I’ve listened to him enough to know to stop listening
kennethcz@reddit

winkelschleifer@reddit
This is the main reason I voted early, 10 days ago. No lines, no technical issues, no problems. Some 80 million people voted early across the US to avoid exactly these issues. Good luck and hang in there, we’re counting on you.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
That's good. I also remember a politician getting elected by early vote even though he ended up punching a reporter in the face the night before the election a few years ago. I think it's great that early voting is an option but I do think there's valid reasons to wait until election day itself. You never know what could happen to change your mind.
Regardless, voting shouldn't be difficult in a country (and state...) that has horrible voter participation as it is no matter when you vote. Stay in line y'all!
TheRealCarmnSandiego@reddit
I think only one presidential candidate has the potential of punching a reporter. If you were on the fence and a punch could change your mind, you haven't been paying attention to this election cycle.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
There is a lot more on the ballot than president...
TheRealCarmnSandiego@reddit
Right, there are crucial decisions being made about our lives, so waiting to see if a candidate may or may not punch a reporter is a flimsy reason to hold off voting until the last day. I get that it was just a hypothetical, and there are other valid reasons.
Bbkingml13@reddit
Why. Voting on voting day is perfectly acceptable
4ofheartz@reddit
Texas can’t keep the grid running during a freeze & people perish. Ice storm incapacitated Austin leaving many without power for weeks. A simple storm blows through Dallas & power goes out frequently. It wasn’t always like this. Yes voting should be easy. Reality. Meantime stay in line y’all! Voted here. Near 635 & 75, off Spring Valley Islamic Assoc of North Texas 840 Abrams Rd Richardson, TX 75081
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Agreed. But, when I posted in here about how that power outage for the storm was ridiculous and unacceptable, I got downvoted to hell and told to "go the fuck back where I came from then"
Apparently Texans are masochists who don't want to improve the state? I don't get it.
4ofheartz@reddit
Many Texas voters are clueless when it comes to voting. Republican voters I know have means to do things outside of Texas. Things Texas bans. And most have benefited from Obamacare. Yet they constantly voted for candidates that tried to end Obamacare. It boggles the mind!
noncongruent@reddit
That was a conservative politician running in an already conservative state. He was already a lock for that position and the assault only increased his support. He ended up using being a shitbag to get elected to Montana governor a few years after that assault.
InitialCoda@reddit
I don’t get why people don’t vote early. I’d never vote day of the election since I’m sure it’d be packed and there are potential issues like this one that can come up.
reserved_seating@reddit
Shit happens. That’s why.
whiFi@reddit
“shit happens” is why you vote early. with early voting you have like 2 entire weeks to have “shit happen” and still be able to vote… on election day, if “shit happens” you might just be fucked
Prestigious_Stage699@reddit
I was sent in a last minute work trip for weeks the Friday before early voting happened and didn't get back until it ended. So I'm voting today because shit happens.
Edg-R@reddit
Wouldnt you qualify for a mail in ballot in that case?
What if your flight got home got canceled due to weather or whatever and you didnt make it home in time?
Bbkingml13@reddit
I’m disabled and tried for a mail in ballot 4 years ago and 4 months early wasn’t early enough to get a mail in ballot somehow
whiFi@reddit
Ok? obviously there’s always going to be edge cases, but IN GENERAL, early voting would be the best approach to ensure that “shit happening” doesn’t prevent you from voting.
gvineq@reddit
For over a decade, I voted day of, and it's never taken longer than 10 minutes
This year i voted early because I knew I was going out of town but i was not sure of the day.
If people can wait 20+ minutes for a burger at Whataburger, then it shouldn't be that big a deal to vote
Empress_Clementine@reddit
Why would I wait in a line to vote when I can be in and out in 5 minutes on a Sunday afternoon and carry on to wait for my burger?
gaythrowaway73@reddit
Because a certain party likes to claim voter suppression if they can't vote against republican tyranny in under 30 seconds.
danger-dude@reddit
nah we tend to claim voter suppression because they deleted a bunch of our registrations right before they were due and took away our ability to apply for new ones online
gaythrowaway73@reddit
you were removed from the voter rolls? And you have evidence that only democrats were effected?
danger-dude@reddit
yes, I was. my evidence is mostly anecdotal, but it sure put a sour taste in my mouth. having it happen to anyone is voter suppression imo, R or D.
Ok_Passenger_8299@reddit
I used to be a day of voter, but no longer risk it and choose to vote early instead. I get it. It’s a tradition. It felt great. It was a thing… Not anymore.
Also used to do all my Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve lol
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
Exactly. It's not worth the risk anymore. Better to get it done earlier than risk getting stuck on the day off with difficulties
Arthurs_librarycard9@reddit
It seems you like to live on the edge lol.
SexyOctagon@reddit
So…2, 3 times?
myshellly@reddit
Do you think presidential elections are the only elections?
SexyOctagon@reddit
Of course not. But we are talking in the context of the presidential election.
kepchip@reddit
They’re talking in the context of early voting in general.
DonMan8848@reddit
Midterms, primaries, local elections, etc
MethanyJones@reddit
You only waited 20 minutes? Which Whataburger is that fast?
Disastrous_Tea_3456@reddit
🤣🤣🤣☠️☠️☠️
Dick_Lazer@reddit
OP said they've been waiting for over 2 hours.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I have always been an “on Election Day voter”, it’s my little tradition.
My mom was always an “on Election Day” person and she’d take us to vote with her and then we’d grab a treat somewhere.
I do the same with my kids. It works for us.
To each their own? 🤷🏻♀️
InitialCoda@reddit
Absolutely. But then we get all these posts of people complaining about how long it took to vote or whatever other issues come up that could be easily avoided by not going the day 90% of other people vote.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I think a lot of these people would complain either way.
My mom early voted and waited an hour.
I was in and out today in 15 minutes.
It’s a crapshoot. I also am always prepared for a wait. My anxiety keeps me prepared for all scenarios in any given social situation hahahaha
myshellly@reddit
I enjoy the ritual of voting on Election Day. I voted at noon. In and out in under ten minutes (and it only took that long because I was going very slow to double and triple check everything).
In contrast, my husband voted early last week and stood in line for one hour and 17 minutes.
My city (suburb of Dallas) only has one early voting location, but we have 5 voting locations open today. It really is easier to vote today for some of us.
Veronica612@reddit
I always voted the day of until this year. It was far more convenient (two locations within a pleasant ten minute walk of my home whereas early voting sites were miles out of the way), it felt more festive, and I usually work from home on Tuesdays. This year Dallas county added 10% more early voting locations including one just as close as the regular locations, so I voted early. Plus my work schedule is a little different this year— I knew I would have to go to the office today and I feared I wouldn’t be able to leave early.
SameSadMan@reddit
There are more polling locations on election day.
CulpablyRedundant@reddit
Also voted early. Walked in, voted with 2 empty machines next to me, walked out.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
If everyone voted early you'd have the same shit on a different day.
I don't early vote usually because you never know what could change leading up to the election (like the candidate out west a few years ago punching someone and winning anyway because he heavily won early voting despite losing on election day). There's also something about everyone coming together on one day to vote that I think is cool.
InitialCoda@reddit
Early voting goes on for over a week though doesn’t it? So if people spread out their voting throughout that time then they wouldn’t have those issues.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
This occurred at the time the polls opened so it's not like it was taking a demand Issue at 6:45 am...
My point was this can happen whichever day you choose to go.
InitialCoda@reddit
Right, but if everyone spread out their voting throughout that period then the likelihood of this occurring would be lessened.
hearmeout29@reddit
You had 2 weeks to show up including an entire weekend. The 2nd week you had until 9pm the last two days to vote. There is only 3 days between the last day of early voting and election day. Nothing was happening to change anything. Now look at the situation you're in.
platetone@reddit
it's completely reasonable to think you can vote at 6:45am. you're not waiting until 5:00. so frustrating.
Ok_Avocado1109@reddit
and then you can come back another time...unless its election day
BlazinAzn38@reddit
Two weeks actually
DukeOfDallas_@reddit
This is why the general election day should be a federal holiday. Too many people abandoning to get to work.
frostysauce@reddit
I work federal holidays. I would have to work election day, too. Election day being a holiday would NOT help the working class to vote. We need to stop floating this as some helpful option.
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
If not a federal holiday,?they need to have mandatory early voting 2 weeks before with extended hours and weekends.
Or better yet just do both.
Empress_Clementine@reddit
You mean the two weeks like we already have?
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
With extended hours yes
Shanakitty@reddit
We do have 2 weeks of early voting with a weekend included, and at least 1 of the weeks had extended hours. The weekend before election day should be included in early voting though; it's kind of BS that it ends the Friday before in this state.
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
Yeah I know they had Saturday and Sunday, but I don't consider 7am - 7pm extended hours and some locations don't even follow THAT for early voting. Election day is 7am-7pm. I think there should be places you can vote through at least 10pm
frostysauce@reddit
Both would be good, but the first would help the working class vote far more than some silly idea of a holiday fixing everything.
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
Best to help everyone. Not like Federal Holidays are really anything that important anyway
Empress_Clementine@reddit
It is weird. Like they think everybody can just stop working for a day. No grocery stores, gas stations, hospitals, everybody gets the day off!!
IndependenceLate1033@reddit
It totally is a helpful option though. it doesn’t fix your problem (and your problem deserves a solution) but that’s unfair to say that wouldn’t fix anything …
frostysauce@reddit
No, it won't fix anything. It will make things worse. If it was a holiday they would just say, "We made it a holiday, we fixed the problem!" Meanwhile all those people you see working on Presidents Day would be in exactly the same spot. I'm sick of hearing this as any sort of solution.
IndependenceLate1033@reddit
lol ok 👍
Peligreaux@reddit
Here’s info on taking time to vote on a work day. https://efte.twc.texas.gov/voting_time_off.html
greyghost5000@reddit
One problem with that is that they're only required to give PTO to vote if an employee doesn't have two consecutive hours outside of their working hours. If polls are open 7am-7pm and most folks work 9am-5pm, well then that's two consecutive hours x2. So while yes, legally an employer needs to accommodate the time off, they aren't required to pay for it.
SiriusSlytherinSnake@reddit
That's because too many people don't know the laws regarding voting. They are allowed to take off or leave early/come late, if they are voting on election day.
Empress_Clementine@reddit
With all the early voting available in Dallas, I’m shocked there’s people who wait until Election Day to wait in a line when they don’t have to.
Ok-Director5082@reddit
Have to wonder with gop in charge with denying poll watchers if they’re really having ‘internet issues. Also sounds like a lie. Those voting booth don’t need internet and the only thing getting printed are the receipts for voter confirmation.
CatteNappe@reddit
The machine used to vote does not need the internet, but since we have countywide voting they do need the internet to check the voter registration roll and assign you the correct ballot for your precinct. You may be voting for mayor in your little city in Dallas County, and a different state representative than the guy in front of you in the line.
MushSee@reddit
Dang, early voting for me (Kaufman county) was instant. I seriously don't understand why people who have the opportunity to vote early would opt to wait for hours in line on election day...
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Many reasons. Accessibility, work schedule, and the fact there usually isn't a huge line. I always work on election day and have never spent more than 20 minutes at a polling center. Until I moved here apparently...
MushSee@reddit
I mean sure, but I voted on a Sunday... I don't know that they were open every single day of early voting, but there wasn't a day of the week that was discluded. So long as you looked it up, it's pretty accessible; today is a Tuesday.
Cruise_fanaticgirl@reddit
I just don’t understand waiting until Election Day and waiting in line when early votin go was available for 2 weeks with no line…
NoReplyBot@reddit
Theres a large population of people that we won’t understand. Makes no sense, educate them, give them more opportunities, etc. and it won’t make a difference.
There’s a very tiny population of people that had zero opportunity over the past two weeks vote for whatever reason - medical/hospital, out of country, etc. Everyone else go figure we won’t understand them.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Perhaps they don't have reliable transportation to go the early voting sites, as there are far fewer. Perhaps their job wouldn't let them off to vote except on election day. For example, I could walk to 3 sites today from my home to vote easily. I could do that for 0 early voting sites. Also, maybe we shouldn't look down on people who are engaging civically, just because they choose to vote in a different manner than you.
NoReplyBot@reddit
There are free transportation services in Philadelphia to help get you to voting sites. Public trans in my city is free to voting sites. The job excuse goes against logic. There are mail in ballots that you can request ahead of time because of job, vacation, medical, etc.
The beauty about all these free and convenient options (I only mentioned some in my replies) is that you can do them at your convenience and not wait in line. If you choose last minute you have no one to blame but yourself, not the system. The conversation isn’t about looking down on anyone, so idk where that comes from. There’s 150m voters, there isn’t a one shoe fits all but there are a shit ton of different shoes to find which fits you. If you have to settle on the last minute long lines show, then that’s on you.
In the words of Philly’s DA “F’around, and Find out.” Well people unfortunately finding out.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Sir, this is r/dallas...
No-Pin1011@reddit

Libro_Artis@reddit
It took a minute for the computer to process my ID this morning. Just be patient! Vote!
IWantSealsPlz@reddit
FYI to anyone in the Garland/Richardson area, the polling location off Beltline and Galaxie we were in and out 5 minutes on a Saturday.
NotDrewBrees@reddit
There are hundreds of vote centers open today. You’re free to vote at any of them if the workers are having technical problems.
Closest ED sites to The Chapel of the Cross include:
Ben Milam Elementary
North Dallas HS
Solar Preparatory School for Girls
Armstrong Elementary in HP
Fastgirl600@reddit
You need to go to and find your Precinct there are numerous ones for your area of Dallas County. https://www.dallascountyvotes.org/vote-centers/
NotDrewBrees@reddit
Sorry, but that's incorrect.
Dallas County participates in the Countywide Polling Place Program and has since 2019.
On the list of Early and Election Day polling places, the top of each page says 'Vote Anywhere in Dallas County'.
Fastgirl600@reddit
You are correct I'm sorry I'll delete
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Most of those are struggling also according to the workers at this site. Milam is even slower supposedly. And I've been waiting 2 hours now
Scorpionfarts@reddit
That’s… not good. I thought they weren’t hooked up to the internet?
tbear87@reddit (OP)
The machine isn't. But you can vote anywhere in the county so they use an internet database to pull your info including your specific ballot because they may differ depending what city or precinct you are in.
Scorpionfarts@reddit
Gotcha. They really should have redundancy setup in this day and age. Every GameStop has redundancy in place if the internet goes down.
CH11DW@reddit
Well, they also to verify you haven’t voted already in one of those other polling stations.
bela_the_horse@reddit
You mean our elections are run worse than a GameStop? Sounds about right.
BitGladius@reddit
The election should do better, but you'd typically expect a 2 week pop-up to rely on venue internet and other hook ups without providing their own back up. This would probably take maintaining long term contracts for cellular internet as a backup.
Diligent-Towel-4708@reddit
Wonder which carrier? My bet is on at&t.
voodoobunny999@reddit
We’re running a meme election.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
We probably spend more in tax loopholes for them than we do on election systems so... Checks out
Semper454@reddit
You are free to vote at any center WITHIN YOUR COUNTY. Critical distinction with lots of non-Dallas city people surely in this sub.
NormStormo@reddit

erod100@reddit
Please everyone VOTE regardless of hurdles you may face🙌🏽‼️
aaarya83@reddit
Statistically only 50% cast vote for president elections. For local mayor in Dallas / irving. It’s like 10 %. For councilor. It’s 5%. Pathetic.
2-4-6-h8@reddit
What is your source for this?
I'm not challenging you, I'm frankly curious at taking a look at the dataset (I'm a data guy by trade).
aaarya83@reddit
roy santoscoy.. .who was irving at large counciler... met me at a meet the candidate night and he told me.
yup... at the lower level city.. its pathetic
TheChrisSuprun@reddit
Go to Dallas County Elections and look up historical results. Part of the problem though is disenfranchisement. I was out of town, came back specifically to vote early before leaving town again and was denied the right to vote because they said my address was wrong. (I've lived at the same place for six years and my license reflects that.)
The Elections Dept has good data available just very bad staff.
JForKiks@reddit
This is exactly the reason to always vote early. But please get out and vote. Let’s start change in 2024.
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Absolutely!! I just want to get the word out and have a place for the community to share their experiences. Please share locations that are going smoothly y'all!
NormStormo@reddit
See this post for voting centers with good response time
SugoiHubs@reddit
I voted early last week, early in the morning before work. In and out in less than 10 min. I don’t know why people wait until Election Day.
jalabi99@reddit
And if you have any issues with voting at your appointed voting center, contact the National Voter Protection Hotline at 833-336-8683
PossumJackPollock@reddit
My Spectrum is out, it originally said 2:30 as the repair time, then got pushed back to 7:30.
Really hope this isn't an all afternoon problem across the city.
I don't get cell service at home when the internet is out, so there's a chance I'll be getting my election coverage from my car radio.
Thanks Spectrum.
Fastgirl600@reddit
It's not happening here in Richardson
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
Man it frustrates me that Texas allows 2 weeks of early voting and you can go ANYWHERE in your county and there's still people who wait until last minute and end up not being able to vote because they don't have time. Everyone should plan on it being extended wait on election day and if a long wait is going to cause problems, GO EARLY!
tbear87@reddit (OP)
Not everyone has the same access or free time...There's also far less early voting sites than election day sites. This impacts those without their own vehicles, especially in a city with minimal transit. I can walk to 3 sites today. I can walk to zero early voting locations.
Mynameisdiehard@reddit
My comment was for the people who procrastinate and leave. If you're going on election day that's fine, as long as you commit. If you have to leave because you ran out of time is just incredibly poor planning in my opinion.
Doyometer@reddit
Mockingbird Elementary isn’t far from there and they’re great
well_haiii@reddit
ATT internet was out in Farmers Branch this morning. I believe it was impacting a few locations in the area. Luckily I voted early!!
Alpheas@reddit
Lake Highlands Elementary took us an hour and we got there at open. The judge was signing ballots on the spot. Not sure why they didn't have them ready beforehand.
XipingX@reddit
I’ve been having internet issues at home today as well.
x268labrat@reddit
My husband went to Skyline Library at about 8 am and was in and out in about 15 minutes. It took us about 25 minutes there for our 3 kids and I Friday night.
General-Carob-6087@reddit
This is why I went on the first day of early voting. Figured I'd have 2 weeks worth of opportunities to try again if crap like this happened. I understand not everyone may have that freedom or luxury but that was my thought process.
Black_Wolf1995@reddit
It’s all a MAGA game….
I bet you they are trying to find some “fault” that they can blame on losing the election this time.
First it was stolen by the overuse of mail in ballots (caused by COVID).
Now they are gonna say dems made voting impossible by messing with the printing of ballots.
Stand on business and vote blue no matter what. Don’t let any BS stop you.
Great-Rich571@reddit
Same issue at one of our polling locations west of FW.
danzigmotherfkr@reddit
I was second in line today and had a slight delay. It took an extra 20 mins while they worked out the issues it shouldn't be preventing anyone from voting just be patient with them.
Inner-Quail90@reddit
Hopefully the FBI is on this it seems convenient today of all days they're having internet issues.
umuziki@reddit
I’m suspicious as well, but as a teacher we face internet outages at least once a week in the early mornings (6 am - 9 am usually). So this isn’t entirely abnormal from my perspective. My district had internet issues just yesterday morning and I couldn’t get on the school wifi until two hours into the school day. But I don’t work in Dallas ISD, so no idea if this is a regularity for them like it is for us.
klousGT@reddit
Wow your IT sucks.
baileyx96@reddit
I mean, we did just have some major storms pass by us. Its not unreasonable to assume that it caused some issues with the internet.
Inner-Quail90@reddit
If that's the source of the issues fine but there's no reason not to make sure.
takemereal@reddit

ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I voted at Harry Stone rec center in far East Dallas. No issues, and no line when I went.
(Through I went at 10am and not during morning rush. I would avoid lunchtime and immediately after work too, if you don’t want a line.
If anyone wants to go there, it’s pretty accessible from other parts of town. 30E, exit Ferguson and it’s a straight shot about 10-15 minutes down the road.
Could also come south down Easton from Garland Rd or NW Hwy too. Make a right at the light at Ferguson and it’s a few blocks in.
Regarding internet issues- yes, a lot of neighborhoods have internet down, not just at polling centers. My neighborhood has zero internet currently, so I had to come to the office vs WFH.
Tight-Physics2156@reddit
Elzie Odom for anyone in Tarrant county has no lines!!

Similar issue at Anne Frank Elementary. Luckily one of the poll workers came out and warned us their network was slow this morning, and it'd probably be at least an hour wait where we were. But he told us about a school down the road someone else had told them about which had no wait. Wound up driving to ED Walker Middle School and it only took me about 15 minutes to vote there
SiriusSlytherinSnake@reddit
I just deal with the time. One reason I don't vote early, there aren't any accessible locations near me for early voting. I'm disabled so getting to further ones are difficult. My local one is easy because it's practically next door lol

Same issue at William Travis Academy in Uptown. Waited 90 minutes (7:30am to 9am). They were very apologetic and explaining that their tablets were having an issue
Optimistiqueone@reddit
I hope they work this out soon and it doesn't deter anyone from voting. They should extend voting hours.
Illogical-Pizza@reddit
Lots of places that are showing green status on the voting map. Reminder that you can vote anywhere in Dallas county.
txnewsprincess@reddit
Just a word of advice: Look at downdetector.com when you head out, too. My neighborhood had a fiber cable cut overnight, so we're currently without internet. While the machines are not connected to the Internet, the devices to verify your address, ID, and registration are.
And yes, there are lots of polling places open today. Pretty much every Dallas ISD school is a polling place, so if you're seeing a line at the more popular ones, there's a good chance the less well known ones are going to be quicker. When I voted early on Friday, for instance, Marsh Lane Baptist had a 45 minute wait, but Royal Lane Baptist just 10 minutes or so away had no appreciable wait.
SadAdministration438@reddit
That sucks. I just voted at Carpenter Middle School however I am registered in Collin County. Hopefully the voting issues get resolved soon for you.
