What's the most, "that's not illegal and it's not hurting anyone but it's still a bit dickish" thing you've seen somebody do lately?
Posted by hhfugrr3@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1013 comments
I picked my kid up from school yesterday afternoon. At the end of the road we walk down there are often parents waiting in their cars to collect kids from the secondary school around the corner. They line up on the side of the road. One woman had decided to park ON somebody's drive (it's a big wide driveway that they've just had put in recently) and sit there waiting for her kid to come out.
I mean it's not a crime. It's not hurting the people who live there. But, it still struck me as a massive dick move.
Infinite_Edge1442@reddit
People watching videos on their phone without earphone. It shows how little manners they were taught, self centred and never heard of "be considerate to others".
Also people who answer their phone on loud speaker, but then put the speaker against their ear. Like wtf are you doing, that's not how to answer a phone.
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
This has become rampant since Covid, not only teens doing it but fully grown adults... it’s infuriating! You’d think they’d be embarrassed but clearly not.
Goobernauts_are_go@reddit
It's getting worse since phone companies removed headphone jacks. I know bluetooth ones aren't expensive, but the lack of jack doesn't help.

One hit wonders of the 80s - The Reynolds Girls or something. The song, whatever it was, had the memorable line, "I'd rather jack than Fleetwood Mac". Who knows, it rhymes I suppose...

audigex@reddit
Yeah and tbh I kinda get it - bluetooth ones aren't silly money but kids will lose them more easily so even with the best of intentions they'll probably vanish within a few weeks, and people don't just have 10 pairs of £2 bluetooth headphones lying around like they used to with wired ones
turtleship_2006@reddit
I mean you can still buy wired headphones with lightning cables
They're not quite as readily available as traditional ones but a quick search of Amazon or a visit to Currys/your tech retailer of choice will provide you with apple's official ones and cheaper 3rd party ones
audigex@reddit
More usefully you can get them with USB-C cables, lightning is being phased out
But there are some downsides - you can't charge with them plugged in unless you have an adapter (which nobody has) and more importantly people don't just have 20 pairs shoved in a drawer somewhere in their house
mrggy@reddit
Its 100% this. I used to always forget my headphones in uni. It was really easy to pop into a store and buy a new pair for super cheap. They were shit, but it was fine because they were just an emergency backup. Not only are blutooth headphones more expensive, but they don't sell them on every corner like they used to with the wired ones. It doesn't excuse being a dick and watching videos full volume, but the transition from wired to Blutooth has not been totally seamless
FigNinja@reddit
I suppose that may have started it, but USB C earbuds are cheap. I have a few free sets that came with my phones. You can get a two-pack for $7 on Amazon. The jacks started disappearing 8 years ago. You would think people would have adjusted. Maybe it’s the sort of thing, that once people started it, it became normalized.
YourLizardOverlord@reddit
I still haven't. But I'm an old git and something that isn't physically connected to my phone just seems ... over engineered and wrong somehow.
I wouldn't dream of playing music or talking on the phone where it would disturb anyone though. It was easier to adapt to living without a soundtrack than adapting to wireless headphones.
FigNinja@reddit
I'm also an old git and I adjusted. USB C earbuds are attached to the phone if you don't like wireless ones, though. And like I said, they're not expensive.
YourLizardOverlord@reddit
Does iPhone 12 lightning port have real USB? I guess it must because I can sync to my PC.
turtleship_2006@reddit
You can buy headphones which connect to the lighting port, or adapters that let you plus traditional headphones into that port
FigNinja@reddit
I think it has lightning, but lightning port earbuds also exist and are quite cheap.

Why do headphone jacks change things?
Phones have a microphone in the base and speaker in the top to be held against your ear.
Is the idea that people are too lazy to want to hold a phone against their head and so instead use it on speaker?

When I worked in an office it was a regular moment of hilarity when someone played music without realising their headphones weren't connected.
I sat at a desk next to a woman who was very no-nonsense, raised by farmers and liked hunting in her spare time. When it happened to her, she was exposed for privately loving to listen to the original Disney beauty and the beast soundtrack. Which I reminded her of for the remaining years we worked together.
I knew it would happen to me eventually and whatever song I was playing would probably embarrass the crap out of me in front of my coworkers. And I was right.... when the time came and the universe returned this karma to me, the song my coworkers were all blessed with was Rack City by tyga

I was on a plane and the lady next to me was watching a movie on loud speaker all throughout the flight, luckily I was gifted some high quality headphones that block out noise so I couldn't hear a thing but everyone around me was trying to sleep and all I could think of was how crazy that girl was.
Pendragon1948@reddit
Two teenage girls on a bus were doing this, my friend goes up to them and asks very politely if they could put some headphones on and they kick off, whole thing escalates and they basically tell him to shut up and implicitly suggest he's a paedo so I get involved to defend my mate and say he's not going anything wrong and we're all sitting here with headphones on because we have some respect for the people around us, and they start having a go at me until somebody else gets involved and says let's all just listen to our phones with our headphones on. The crazy thing was, I genuinely think these two girls didn't understand why they were being criticised.

I don't like it when people say i should be embarrassed about this. I don't know if it's just my phone or my ears, but I can't understand what people are saying on the little speaker anymore so I have to use loudspeaker- and if I'm in town I need to hold it up to my ear to hear. I feel like a bit of a price but if there's background noise it's the only way I can hear when I'm on the move.
I never used to have to do it though so I don't know what's going on or why.

BeatificBanana@reddit
I don't think anyone's implying you need to be with your son 24/7 and force headphones onto his ears. I think the implication that if you're raising your child correctly (to be considerate of others and aware of how their behaviour impacts those around them) then they won't do it even if you're not there to stop them.
Mustbejoking_13@reddit
This was more a riff that my son can be a bit of a dick. We teach him right and wrong, kind hands, kind words, to be considerate, etc. But sometimes, a thought works itself into his brain, that he simply cannot resist. That thought? Be a dick.

Im on holiday at the moment and the amount of people aged 50+ that have no concept of turning down the volume in public. One guy watching a football match on his phone full volume in the hotel bar. The bar was practically empty and little noise so there was no need to have it turned up so loud. People scrolling facebook and having autoplay enabled on videos and ads at full volume. People having their ringtone at the loudest possible settings in quiet restaurants. Interesting to note that all these people are british. Havent heard loud volumes from anyone speaking other languages….
mynamesareallgone@reddit
I'm in hospital, on the post labour ward, with a newborn, and there's a dad watching football on loud. I loathe him.
wales-bloke@reddit
I'll never forget the experience in the post-delivery ward after my first child was born.
My GF was knackered, obviously.
The ward was rammed. And opposite us was a "large" family who'd just had a baby - and at 2am they were ordering a fucking dominos. Zero consideration for anyone else.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
Could have been worse though.
My wife had to give birth to our twins by emergency caesarean section, in the middle of Covid, wearing a mask, after pretty much only two trimesters.
They whisked the babies away into NICU because they were so premature, and moved her into a private room until her covid test came back negative, then into a no-masks ward where everyone had had a negative test, where she got to lay there recovering from major abdominal surgery and watching all the other mums wandering around talking and cooing over their own and each others' babies.
She lay there waiting to get well enough to be taken to NICU to finally see her new babies, when she became aware of a weird conversation between a nurse and another patient in the curtained-off bay next to hers.
"Ok, so you've had your covid test and it came back positive, but you say you had covid a couple of months ago, so it's probably just some left-over proteins in your blood, and we'll consider you negative..."
She was a nurse herself so she knew this was sketchy as fuck, and managed to flag a nurse and tell them about it as soon as one came past her bed.
Long story short the nurse she overheard in the other bay really fucked up, let a suspected covid carrier into a ward full of post-partum mums and newborn babies, and then left her there to wander around huffing on them all for half an hour before my wife raised the alarm.
The hospital freaked out, yanked the suspected carrier off the ward, put everyone else (including my wife) into individual confinement rooms until they'd passed the maximum realistic incubation period and got another negative test result, and then finally released them with their babies.
As a suspected carrier my wife wasn't allowed anywhere near the NICU at any point, even when she was well enough to move around.
So that's the story of how my wife gave birth to premature twins by emergency cesarean, and wasn't allowed to meet them for ten days.
dragongirl_3@reddit
This is actually horrific. I had a prem baby also by emergency section and your experience just gave me the shivers. Hope you are all okay now.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
Yeah - happily it was years ago now, but that wasn't even all of it. The doctor delivering the twins also left an entire placenta inside my wife, and we only discovered it when she got an infection, started haemorrhaging and basically delivered a lump of tissue the size of a chicken breast herself at home a couple of weeks later... despite us being back in touch with the hospital several times about her symptoms, and the doctor concerned (who - in defiance of all reasonable processes - apparently handled his own complaints) gaslighting her that it wasn't possible he could have made a mistake.
It's a really good job we're fervent supporters of the NHS, or they would have been on the wrong end of a massive lawsuit with the number of times they fucked up.
RepresentativeNo3680@reddit
Unfortunately u can't actually sue the NHS..
Soft-Put7860@reddit

Shaper_pmp@reddit
I nearly did a few times, but it was the only real option at every stage, and I was more concerned about supporting her than writing about myself.
The twins and their older brother are all perfectly fine now. They are - to quote Futurama - "belligerent and numerous". 😁
Random_Nobody1991@reddit
Some of the measures taken during lockdown and the wider pandemic were utterly inhumane.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
To be fair once they'd identified a possible Covid exposure there was nothing they could really do but separately quarantine all the mums with their babies.
Given ours were in NICU and incredibly vulnerable and hadn't been exposed it also wouldn't have been safe for her to have contact with them before we knew it was safe, so it sucked fucking hard but there was nothing else we could really do.
I spent ten days shuttling between the twins in NICU, my wife (showing her pictures and videos of the babies) and home where I was looking after our four year-old (who also wasn't allowed into the maternity unit because young kids were banned for infection control concerns).
It was really shit and I broke down crying once or twice (the house also chose that same period to shit the bed as the central heating boiler and two appliances chose that same week to break down), but we got through it in the end.
Aside from that one fucking moron nurse and patient it really was all just unfortunate but necessary consequences from that point on.
Squid_In_Exile@reddit
Yeah, they should've just let that idiot kill a bunch of babies.
the_esjay@reddit
I think that a lot of things that wouldn’t happen otherwise were allowed to slide during Covid. Shit staff are (marginally) better than none, I suppose. But the student nurses who came in and often worked full time were amazing. Absolute stars.
Gravitasnotincluded@reddit
And the nurse sacked? Surely?
Shaper_pmp@reddit
No information about what happened to her, but I'd assume a serious reprimand at least, based on how hard people were nailed to the wall for mistakes when my wife was a PICU nurse.

Good grief that’s awful. But good for her for reporting it to someone!

I not only find it very distracting to have unexpected sounds come on when browsing the internet, but it makes me feel very stressed too if it happens to me in public. I’d object much less to ads in online games if they didn’t sometimes come on unexpectedly at full blast. But I always tend to have my phone on silent just as a matter of course.
It’s also great that you often get access to your own personal bedside (if horribly overpriced) tv if you’re admitted to hospital, but you should be able to request headphones - especially at nights - and you should always try to be considerate of other people on a ward.
Watching sports on a maternity ward should be a prosecutable offence.
I’d rather someone watching tv I can hear to the intermittent beeping of one of those machines that releases IV meds, mind you. Background tv or radio noise is much easier to tolerate than many other noises, and I know is helping some people deal with a very stressful situation. I got quite into the Archers once during a hospital stay, as the lady in the next bed listened every day and was a bit deaf.

I once glared so hard at a guy on the London Underground for doing this that when he turned and looked at me I felt so guilty I awkwardly smiled. When he got off he passed a note to me, it said “no one smiles on the tube!” With a cute smiley face and his number. I felt insanely guilty because I wasn’t being nice at all, I was raging in British.

AstraofCaerbannog@reddit
Haha I was too polite for London 😂 I was never sure if he thought I was flirting and that was an opening, or he was just so amazed at an act of random kindness on the London underground which was my awkward smile, that he was overcome with the desire to meet someone so pure 😂 I never contacted him to find out, or to shit on his hopes and dreams of genuine kindness, by telling him to get better headphones.
heatonfan@reddit
It would have been a most disappointing text exchange for the guy, to find out a “sliding doors” moment was over his being a tight wad on his headphones. To be fair to him, he wasn’t a “sodcaster” given he had at least used headphones, less egregious than most of the dicks being described in this thread!
AstraofCaerbannog@reddit
It really would have been. He actually seemed quite sweet other than the inconsiderate headphones, probably better that his dream didn’t get crushed. Back in the day (going back 14 years) people didn’t tend to just listen to stuff without headphones as far as I recall, but a lot of people did have very bad headphones that would blare music out, so I think it was the equivalent of inconsiderate behaviour.

Sure enough: People watching reels at full volume by the pool. People watching reels at full volume in the lounge/bar and worst of all a woman watching the football on her phone at full volume in the restaurant suring her evening meal. It was awful. Things certainly had changed since last time we were there.
But best one recently was in a doctor's surgery waiting room. A huge bull of a woman was watching reels at full volume and vaping constantly. This was only interrupted by her granddaughter calling on video call. The woman then had a very loud conversation, while vaping, in the doctor's waiting area, about how 'Nan's in there for her chest pains'.

I had a woman do this beside me in A and E, I had a severe concussion and had to ask her to turn it off as the noise was hurting me.
Pure-Night-6164@reddit
Yes to this. I work in a hospital and our patients often sit in the waiting room watching movies or TV full blast on their phones. We don't have closed off console areas so you'll be sat trying to focus on looking at a scan and it's noise overload 😵💫
marmaladesardine@reddit
Especially in designated quiet carriages on trains.
MuteBasilisk@reddit
As a flight attendant, I tell people to wear headphones or turn their devices down on flights, sometimes after a noise complaint is made and some times you can just tell when it is annoying people. People mostly get embarrassed because they know they are being inconsiderate but they think no one will call them out. On a 6 hour flight it was 2 hours in when I noticed a kid's device on full volume, he wasn't even watching so I figured it wouldn't be an issue if I said he needed to wear headphones. The parents both had headphones in anyway. I told the parents that their child needed to wear headphones if he is watching the device. They got argumentative because 'no one has complained for the last two hours.' Common courtesy shouldn't have to be prompted. They then asked for a second opinion from my colleague on whether the kid needed headphones, as if she was going to tell them it was fine for them to blast cartoons for the next 4 hours.
NoPalpitation9639@reddit
I had that on a flight last week. An 11pm flight. And my wife said I was in the wrong for calling her out on it 😱

My parents do this but in their defense, they are late 70s/early 80s and don't hear a thing without doing it . Also, we've tried with earphones, and they always mess with them.

Nearly had a fight on national express. This guy was sat in front of me at the front of the coach. Playing shite music at 8am on full blast. The driver kept turning round to tell him to turn it off but he didn't hear, people next to me were tutting. I got up, tapped him on the shoulder to turn it down as he didn't hear me when I said "excuse me".
He then starts swearing at me, saying I'm rude for touching him. That he wants to meet me outside after we stop presumably to beat me up???(he's massive, I'm a average sized female). I just told him that he's distracting the driver and idgaf.
He did shut up as the other passengers started on him lol 😆 was actually the highlight to my day telling him to shut it

A lot of people do this nowadays because most new phones do not come with a 3.5mm jack which means you cant just plug in some cheap earphones. I believe companies have done this to force you into buyig expensive wireless earphones but they use some excuse about battery life to cover for themselves.
prof_hobart@reddit
A lightning to headphone jack converter costs about £5, and USB C ones are even cheaper.
capeandacamera@reddit
True but it's an extra thing to carry around and people will forget
I think the removal of the headphone jack as a factor gets underestimated
prof_hobart@reddit
Keep it attached to the headphone cable and it's not an extra thing to carry.
And if you do happen to forget it on a given day (like I occasionally do), then just don't listen to stuff on the bus or train that day.

JessicaSmithStrange@reddit
I'm guilty of the speaker thing, because the normal audio on my calls is crap, and I have a sensory problem with my hearing.
What makes the difference though, and made me finally stop doing it, is that a family member gave me their headphones, which have better sound quality, so I run all of my calls through those now because I can actually hear.
It's more comfortable for me because I'm not straining to pick up every other word, and I don't overcompensate with the phone speakers any more, so I don't piss off everybody around me.
55percent_Unicorn@reddit
I mostly agree, but with a minor caveat. I work with deaf people who have cochlear implants. For some people, having the phone on speaker but held up to their ear is the only way they can actually hear it.
Sure, most people are just being eejits, but some might actually need that extra volume.
theamelany@reddit
Even deaf people without implants, sometimes need it on speaker. But its usually teens playing terrible music.

The loudspeaker on and putting the phone up to the ear and near shouting instead of speaking, personally I think it's a "look at me, I've got a friend, look how interesting my life is" kinda thought process, when kids to it I can understand as a few listen in and join in but grown ass adults walking down the street or on the bus doing it is just bizarre. FadingMandarin@reddit
Well. Unduly loud talking in trains is indeed an irritant.
But listening to music or watching a film in public without headphones is noisy, is irritating, and is something only a really anti-social idiot would contemplate.
AliensFuckedMyCat@reddit
How dare people make noise in public.
FadingMandarin@reddit
Good fucking grief, you actually think it is acceptable to listen to music on a train or bus without headphones.

I just think it's fucking stupid thing to complain about when it's literally no louder than anything else in public making noise.

sparklingbutthole@reddit
It might not be any louder but it adds a layer of noise and for a lot of people with sensory sensitivity this can be really hard to manage.

AliensFuckedMyCat@reddit
And I think it's mind boggling so many people complain about someone watching a tiktok (never complaining out loud of course, because that's too much confrontation) or talking on speakerphone, neither of which are louder than a conversation, when we're literally surrounded at all times by cars and trains and busses pushing out like 90db+.
heatonfan@reddit

Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
Conversations happen everywhere that’s just life. You can’t stop that. But subjecting people to listen to your loud and irritating TikTok’s isn’t necessary.
Most of people’s issues aren’t with playing your stuff out loud, it’s with playing them in confined spaces or public transport within earshot of multiple people - it’s inconsiderate.
And to be honest, if you were on public transport with your friends and having a shouting match volume conversation you’d probably have a few people judging you as well.

I was in Lidl in the UK one evening afew weeks ago, and a woman who was 9 shopping was having a conversation over speaker for at least twenty minutes. It was full volume, and you could hear it in the entire store... and it was the most POINTLESS conversation you can imagine. Like, one of those conversations where you don't actually have anything worth saying but you stay on the phone anyway. I eventually got fed up enough that I turned to the woman and said "Excuse me, could you take your phone off speaker please? " in a pleasant tone. She looked surprised to be called out, but took the phone off speaker and carried on... sometimes you just have to give people a nudge and they'll do the right thing.

I was recovering in hospital after an operation and some dick literally listened to/ watched Tiktok in the ward all night on the speaker. The nurses did fuck all, in the end he turned it right down (but not off) after I shouted at him.
denspark62@reddit
same thing for me last year
After an op was back in the normal ward and the guy in the bed next to me had tiktok ( i think) on his phone with the sound on speaker. Seemed to be on repeat as the same music kept repeating in order. To be fair to him he switched it off after i asked him to put headphones on and apologised the next day.
the day before i'd been in the HDU after the surgery for a night and one of the other patients who'd had an argument with a nurse decided he had to tell his wife about it via his phone on speaker (so the nurses could hear) after midnight , on a ward with people who had had big operations that day.... The next day when he started vomiting copiously after ignoring the nurses about fluid intake i found it quite amusing....
the_esjay@reddit
Actually, what really winds me up when staying in hospital are night staff who don’t even attempt to be quiet. Why the fuck are you letting doors slam and calling to colleagues down the corridors when sick people are already struggling to sleep well? I don’t expect people to creep around and whisper, but you can try and let the bin close quietly and not switch the main ward light on for godsakes. Lack of sleep can really fuck you up, much more quickly than you might imagine.
denspark62@reddit
yeah the last few years i've had i think 5 stretches in hospital and the noise at night is one of the worst things about it, though i tend to be a deep sleeper so once ive dropped off im usually good but it can take a while to get to sleep.

Often in reality TV or YouTube or whatever you'll see folks doing this so that the viewer can hear both sides of the conversation.

A bit niche, but we have an EV. We very rarely charge it when we go out, but every now and then we might want to top up while out shopping. Some supermarkets/shopping centres have charging points but there appear to be some EV owners who think it is EV parking and OK to park there even when not charging. If you do this, you are a dick. I came out of a shopping centre and moved mine while I waited for my wife and kids because I could see someone waiting. The Porsche next to me wasn't even plugged in.
Infinite_Edge1442@reddit
That is something I've never thought about since I don't have an EV.
Just curious, do you find enough charging stations? I feel like it has got more and more popular that our infrastructure isn't ready yet. Though I do see more and more charing stations popping up slowly but surely.
Breaking-Dad-@reddit
We mainly use ours for commuting and have no need to charge away from home. There is a row of charging points at my local supermarket / city car park (not fast charging) which are often mostly empty and the car park does get full. The case I am talking about is a huge shopping centre in the middle of nowhere (York Designer Centre) with about 8 chargers and 3000 parking spots. There really is no need to use them.
To answer your question, on the few occasions we've charged away from home we've had no difficulty with the number of places. Our only difficulty has been setting up all the apps and finding them in the location we need, but that is more on us than anything else.
ConstantRecognition@reddit
A lot more chargers are doing to tap to start and tap to end for payment so you don't need apps (I fucking hate apps for charging). Mostly charge at home/work now anyway much easier/cheaper.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
If you get a charger at home you almost never need to use public chargers for normal driving because your car charges completely overnight.
We've had an EV for years, and while you need to be a little more careful to plan your route for long road trips there are actually thousands of chargers all over the UK, and with a couple of apps downloaded and charging at your destination you can go pretty much anywhere aside from the wilds of Scotland.
We have a Tesla, so supercharging is also great - we can go from about 20% to 80% charge in 30-45 minutes, and with young kids even if we need to plug in for a full hour every 3-4 hours on a long journey, that pretty much maxes out the amount of time they can go without stretching their legs or having something to eat anyway.
It's still not quite as easy as just jumping in an ICE car and going on a long road-trip, but it's entirely doable, and the other benefits of an EV are huge enough that I don't think I'd ever go back.
Tsircon85@reddit
We have only 2 EV spaces at work and it’s causing massive issues as the same 2 members of staff plug in everyday and don’t move their cars once charging is finished. Every single staff briefing meeting starts with complaints that 2 people are hogging the chargers all day every day.
frymaster@reddit
we only have 2 EV spaces at work but luckily my colleagues will coordinate among themselves / shuffle around as needed
ConstantRecognition@reddit
Same as us really, 4 people all live pretty close so swapping around keeps us all in charge for free (my company pays flat rate for managed offices, so we pay it whether it's used or not).
Tsircon85@reddit
Wish it was like that where I work. It’s a uni campus and the site itself is made up of 5 buildings which can each be occupied by hundreds of staff at any one time. They’re all from different departments that don’t necessarily communicate with each other so trying to find out who is who can be a nightmare.
ExplanationMotor2656@reddit
Is the cable long enough to reach over to the next space? Having people shuffle their cars around must be a hassle.
Tsircon85@reddit
No they added the 2 EV spaces in with the disabled spaces. You could park on the hatched lines to get close but then you risk a parking ticket from security for not parking in the space properly 🙄
MadeThisUpToComment@reddit
Our charging stations charge money if you stay too long after you're full.
Tsircon85@reddit
That actually sounds like a really good way of getting people to stop hogging them. Might suggest that at the next staff briefing.
imvirtuallyinsane@reddit
At my place of work we decided against this, because it gives people a sense of right to park in the premium space by the door: "I'm paying for it, so it's OK". You'd have to whack the penalty up a long way to dissuade people, like tesla do.
Instead, you have to be registered to use the charger (cannot start it without your own pass). When someone overstays they are publicly shamed (within the workplace). Mostly it works. You have to have thick skin to ignore that. Someone tries, with tired old excuses about forgetting or what not. No one else "forgets", Bob.
kelly-golightly@reddit
Or the classic phantom charging! Get the leads out and plug it in but not activate the charge. It pisses me off as there could be someone desperate to charge and can’t cause you’re too lazy to park elsewhere.
dayofthe_misanthrope@reddit
Ooo this one reminds me: I was at Tesco the other day and an electric DPD van pulled up to the charger, plugged in, and then the driver hopped into his own car parked in the adjacent row and fucked off home. Literally no harm done, but it just felt like outrageous behaviour.

It's surprising how many people come running to free their car straight away. I can only assume they're watching from a distance for some reason. Bizarre, it is.
xPositor@reddit
Depending on the car and the type of charger, plug the car in for them - clearly they've forgotten to plug their car in themselves. They will then get charged for "linger" time / idle fee if their car is charged up and they don't unplug (on top of the charging cost itself). That's between 50p and £1 a minute on a Tesla supercharger.
arpw@reddit
Is that even possible if it's not your car? Don't charging sockets have covers on them that need to be released from inside the car, similar to petrol caps?
xPositor@reddit
You can with a Tesla at a Super Charger - you trigger the cover/cap release from the cable - https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-BEE08D47-0CE0-4BDD-83F2-9854FB3D578F.html

What really annoyed me was that this was a Taycan, so he knew very well how annoying it was. My guess is they came out and removed the charger as they had enough charge but couldn't be bothered to move the car and free up the space. An ICE car in the spot would be bad, but somehow this feels worse!
pouchey2@reddit
It definitely feels worse because they should know better than to block the charger for someone else. They'd be annoyed if they couldn't charge.
SilverellaUK@reddit
Not niche if you also consider all the ICE cars that park in the charging spots.
Breaking-Dad-@reddit
Yeah. Thing about this one was that it was a bit out of the way at the end of a massive car park (which I am fine with). York Designer Centre if you know it. There wasn't a shortage of parking there so it was even more odd, why bother parking in the charge spot? Or if you've come out and removed the charger, then move your car to the spaces that were twenty yards away!
I could understand it if the EV spaces were empty and there were no other spaces - the temptation is there, but this was just pointless as far as I could tell.
Voodoopulse@reddit
Parking around schools is like a mine field of entitled behaviour, parents who just don't give a shit about the safety of kids because it saves them a 2 minute walk
aloonatronrex@reddit
Often the parents are wearing gym gear because they love to exercise, just not when it’s within a mile of a school, then they have to park as close as possible.
Happiest_Mango24@reddit
Tell me about it, parking is horrendous around my area because we live right next to the school.
To make this especially stupid, there's a big Tesco by the other gate with a huge car park where they could park much more easily. You have to cross a small road but there's a waiting area (I don't know what it's called) in the middle and a lollypop lady.
Why would you park in a small car park (that covers 3 streets and is therefore crowded with the cars of those who live there) and not the giant one? You're only saving a minute at most
CoachOld856@reddit
It's also because the schools (primary in particular) enforce stupid, no tolerance rules where children must be picked up/ dropped off. Even if they live opposite the school.
Tao626@reddit
I fail to believe that schools are enforcing people to drop their kids off in a car, especially if they literally live opposite the school. If not for that being fucking stupid, then because that excludes all children who's parents don't drive.
physicLaughs@reddit
When do you think people need to get to work? How close do you think everybody lives to a school?
Broccoli--Enthusiast@reddit
I would like to see that policy because i have never heard of it and half my family work in education, both primary and secondary.
Scary_Twist_8072@reddit
That's unbelievable. My daughter starts school next year and the information sent out is very clear that she is expected to walk alone from the start of the second half time... she will be 4.
Yet I've seen policies of school banning children up to 8-10 from walking alone. What is wrong with the UK?
reddevil18@reddit
My primary was on the same street as me, from year 1 (year after reception. 2nd year) it was fine for me to walk in/out alone. 10 years later for my sibling, despite there being no point between the door and the school grounds out of vision of the window, he had to be walked in and picked up by an adult.
is a piss take
Jonnyporridge@reddit
Maybe they do but you don't have to drive 🤦
Acceptable-Art-9649@reddit
If a child has to be in school after 8:30 and an adult has to be in work by 8:55, walking 15 mins home to go get the car then driving 30 mins to work would make them late, versus driving to school and then to work. Whereas if the child and adult both left home at 8:20 and the child could walk on their own as I and my peers did only 20 years ago, everyone is on time.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I have never seen them told they have to be picked up by car. Just handed over to a known person.
Fudge_is_1337@reddit
This is the first I've ever heard of a policy of this kind, where is this happening?
Competitive_Art_4480@reddit
How could they possibly enforce that? What if you don't have a car?
Nine_Eye_Ron@reddit
Ok so I’ve checked, my child’s school or any of the sources they get policies from have no rules around dropping children off at school.
The guidance is that childen under 8 should be accompanied to school by a responsible person but this can be an older sibling and there is no law about age.
Picking up has policies however as well as documented procedures and a complaints process.
citrineskye@reddit
Once, by my sons school, I witnessed a woman stop in the street because she couldn't find a parking space on the roadside. Everyone else in both directions just had to sit and wait for her to finish dropping her kids off.
When she got back to her car, people were beeping and shouting and she just stood there shouting "DON'T BEEP AT ME, WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?!" followed by "YOU COULD HAVE JUST GONE UP THE CURB TO GET AROUND ME".
Honestly... I was both shocked and amused.

My kids primary school gets regular visits from parking wardens. I secretly want to cheer when I see them.
Voodoopulse@reddit

Practical_Page_3790@reddit

Tao626@reddit
Typically, people who are doing things they shouldn't dislike people employed to stop them from doing it.
I don't mind parking wardens either, but I'm also not the type to park on double yellows and then fuck off for 30 minutes.
RRC_driver@reddit
As a driver, I love traffic wardens. But then again, I generally follow parking rules, most of which are designed to make traffic flow better.
faa19@reddit
It's one of these rare times you're happy to see them.
I used to work near a car auction place. Occasionally the cops or PCSO's would be doing their rounds at the same time as the auctions. I have seen people get arrested for using their phone at the wheel leaving the auction.

I live opposite a school and the amount of parents who drive from less than 500m away to drop their kids off is astonishing. And they all speed down my road and abandon their cars wherever they like to do so.

One-Picture8604@reddit
I couldn't agree more. On the estate where I live there is a shopping parade with a small car park right next to a pub that is within walking distance for the entire estate and yet there are queues to get into the car park every time I go past.
Jonnyporridge@reddit
I live in a medium size town in the north west. The school next to us which has a catchment area about the size of a football pitch is inundated with people dropping their kids off or picking them up when they could walk it in ten minutes. What makes me laugh is when those same sorts of people say that cyclists are entitled, or moan about how much traffic there is 🤦 🤣🤣🤣
One-Picture8604@reddit
I genuinely think these people spend more time getting their kid into the car, fighting for a parking space (abandoning the car across someone's drive), wrangling the kid out and leaving again than they would walking.
Practical_Page_3790@reddit
Very rarely was I driven to school as a kid and thought it was a privilege and was always envious of the kids who got dropped off and picked up every single day. But then I grew up and noticed I maintained a healthy weight and can actually walk a good amount of distance, which means hiking is a lot of fun. Rather than moaning a 3 mile walk is too much.

Tall_Field9458@reddit
Absolutely. Two of my neighbours work at my daughter’s school and drive to work every day. It’s a 6 minute walk at 6 year olds pace, about 10 minutes for the 3 year old. I’ve no idea why they drive, they often drive past us and due to the footpaths in the estate we sometimes beat them to it.
Jonnyporridge@reddit
So about 3 mins really 😂 it's nuts isn't it, the cost per mile once you factor in price of the vehicle, fuel, tax, insurance etc must be astronomical, price of walking is nothing, in fact you probably profit due to health benefits.
Beneficial-Metal-666@reddit
I refuse to believe people drive a 500 metre distance.
I just can't bring myself to believe that.

Our primary school was involved in a trial to reduce congestion and increase air quality along with a few other schools in the county. Our school saw the biggest increase in air quality so they put the measures in permanently. All they did was ban parking within a specific perimeter around the school for non-residents.
There was an organised effort by entitled parents who hated this so much to petition the council and try to convince them to change this so they could once again park as close to the primary school as possible. Despite the incredible, demonstrable increase in air quality for their own kids.
Fuck off.

terryjuicelawson@reddit
I see this daily, I think some people assume it is OK if they are still inside. Nope. I can actually forgive a double yellow parker in this respect as you are allowed to pick up passengers. If you are blocking a drive at least you can move it. But the zig zags are for safety - a clear view of the whole entrance, and often the zebra crossing too. If no one is in them then they get a elbow to the wing mirror no problem.
SilverellaUK@reddit
Just seen a woman this morning, who must have been aware of the double yellow lines on the road because she pulled over them and completely onto the pavement, blocking it for the people taking their children to school.

Potential_Grape_5837@reddit
I agree that this is annoying and entitled.
Can I ask, was the nursery there when you moved in?
I ask because I live on a road with a primary school that’s been there since 1903. I’m constantly amazed when I see my neighbours who get frustrated that the road is clogged with pedestrians, scooters, bicycles, some cars (few drive)… magically around 9 am and 3 pm every Monday through Friday.
nectarine_serene@reddit
Yeah my parents have the same. I went to that school and this never happened 30+ years a go. Now, people park across the driveway blocking them in and are very snappy if you ask them to move.
What's more is the driveway is next to a crossing and on a corner so by parking there not only does it block them in, it blocks view of the crossing and bend.
But precious little darlings.

One of the neighbours of my son's school has started moving her car to the street outside her home to claim a space next to her own driveway, specifically at drop-off and pickup times. And I don't blame her because if she didn't do it, one day somebody would part to close or across the driveway and shed get blocked in when she wants to go out (if it hasn't already happened)
greggery@reddit

I'm a childminder so as you can imagine, I always have lots of kids with me on school runs and always running on strict timescales due to drop offs before and after the school run. We walk and have done for years but occasionally I have to take the car because I've got a group to take the kids to that starts straight after the school run or one has been dropped off and their jacket was left in their car and it's raining etc (rare but does happen from time to time).
Even with all that, I always park legally, even if it's a 5 minute walk from the school! I tend to find those that park illegally and selfishly aren't in a rush to be anywhere!
No-Cost-1045@reddit
I've known a car literally park across a junction and left in there about 10 mins as they got their kid so noone could get in or out the junction just to stop them from having to walk an extra 50 yards from a more sensible spot.
bonkerz1888@reddit
Aye funnily enough this is the third day this has come up in different conversations on here. Folks like next to a school, private residential carpark with designated spaces.. all used up by parents come 3pm, cars parked on pavements and blocking the road, pandemonium.
Then when you tell them to shift out the designated spot they spit the dummy out. I've purposely blocked a car in on one occasion when the parent fucked off to the school gates. Left the house half an hour later to a fire breathing dragon still stuck in her car with her kids.
The worst bit of it all.. it's a village and 90% of the parents all live within a few hundred yards of the school which has no policy prohibiting walking to school. They're all a bunch of lazy bastards.. can only ponder the damage they're doing to their kids, instilling that attitude in them.
ashakespearething@reddit
Brilliant one on our local fb recently where someone complained about the selfish and entitled behaviour of a driver who'd left her wing mirror hanging off. Post illustrated with a pic that showed her car parked on double yellow lines and completely straddling the pavement next to a school, but it was OK because "she was only there 5 minutes". She continued to fight for her life in the 100+ comments, even when someone pointed out they'd seen a pram have to go in the road around her...
Darkwaxer@reddit
I was a school caretaker two years ago, just a job to escape a job. When letting the kids I’d only open one to prevent parents driving onto the school playground. One morning a new parent at the school got out of her car, opened the second gate and proceeded to drive her landrover onto the school playground. Most of the children had just entered the school but my god the nerve.
GlykenT@reddit
I've seen multiple occasions where the police had to come to move parents' cars so that a bus bringing kids back from somewhere could get through.

Parking in general, be it bikes or cars to be honest.
People want to get as close to their destination with no care for how it affects other people.
People with park on pavements to be near their house, leave bikes blocking paths outside shops, or just stop somewhere with their hazards on despite it being a stupid place to stop.
MargotChanning@reddit
There’s a road near me with a primary school on and it’s only sheer luck that someone hasn’t been run over yet. It’s like a bingo card of bad parking. The school have clearly tried everything, there’s massive signs on the fencing, teachers come out with cones early in the morning. They’ve even had kids with them holding up guilt tripping signs but nothings stopped it. It’d just pure selfishness,

Groups of people who walk side by side, take up the whole path and don’t move to make space when you’re coming towards them in the opposite direction. Especially people who do this with their kids.
Whenever there’s someone walking towards us on the path, I always make sure to tell my kids to make space for them.
We have lots of small narrow pathways where I live so it happens rather frequently.
Upstairs-Hedgehog575@reddit

I’m the opposite kinda fused with this. I have a school by my home, and do get parents do this. They don't park on my drive, but park across it.
I've even told someone recently, who is a repeat offender, that I do not appreciate them parking across my drive, nor do our neighbours.
Due to being self employed, I come and go fairly frequently, so access does happen 24/7, as my colleague and I work remotely, and occasionally need to meet.
The problem is, they all say/think it'll only be 5 minutes. But I live on a main road, so their 5 minutes means I'm unable to park anywhere else, other than my driveway.
Our neighbours on both sides, will frequently park their cars forward, or bring their bins out, blocking a bit of their drives, but I only have one car, and can't be bothered doing the bins.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Next time they do it zip tie your bumper grill to theirs. Then either go for a long walk or go back into your house for a nap or a long bath. I mean if you're not going anywhere any way...
We get it all the time too. After 20 years of yelling at people for parking in our private car park (4 houses - 5 spaces) or across our driveway (across from a popular pizza place, a youth club and behind our local theatre which has no parking (think that was sold in the 80s to build our houses and car park??) we don't seem to get many repeat offenders. Only people I give a pass are delivery folks as they're rarely there long and if they are delivering to one of us lot they are welcome to park in the car park.
SWTransGirl@reddit
I’d prefer to ziptie a bin to their car than my car grill. But then I’d lose a bin 😂
For now, I’ll continue to confront those who do it, and raise it to the school, since they’ve said no parent should park there anyway.

People who park front-ways into a bay need to get in the bin anyways, reverse parking is correct, always. I will die on this hill.

Yeah.. I call it "arse parking".. you can see a lot better when you come to leave. The amount of times I've had "nose parkers" (people parked front-in) just start backing out of the bay and almost hit me because they can't see past the cars next to them... too damn high

Random happy trolley story:
There was an elderly lady parked near me at the supermarket a few weeks ago. She had just finished unloading her trolley into her car as I was walking past on the way to return my trolley. I offered to take her trolley back for her, seeing as I was going that way anyway.
She gave me a lovely smile and said "Thank you, young man, that's very kind". It made my day, especially seeing as I'm about 30 years on the wrong side of being a young man.
vikingraider47@reddit
Admit it, you did it for the pound coin, didnt you....
abw@reddit
No pound coin required for a trolley in this supermarket.
reddevil18@reddit
Downside of the "put a quid in" system, she would think your trying to nick her quid. but it does do more overall good for reducing trolleys left everywhere

OK yes, I agree. But I've had somebody tell me off for this before when I left a trolley on the side of the footpath beside the mother's and babies carparks so I feel the need to say that sometimes if you're not leaving them in the way of vehicles or making it impossible to walk through, it can be very helpful for mums of young kids to have a stroller right there to load the small people into and walk into the shop. Very very helpful.
But that obviously only requires the small handful of people using those carparks to leave their own trolley for the next person. It doesn't account for the several trolleys you see scattered around blocking off car parking spaces that you see at most supermarkets you go to
starlevel01@reddit
Saw a sainsburys trolley in the Aldi car park today. I think that's extra levels of dickishness.
ofjune-x@reddit
I work in a retail park and we often find trolleys that are from shops that aren’t in the retail park. I’m talking from places 20+ minutes walk away across various roads from the city centre. I’ve also found trolleys from my work place 20+ mins away in the city centre as well however.

I have to pull out and turn right onto a busy road in the morning. Traffic in the lane nearest me is often at a crawl or standstill because of the traffic lights further up, but the number of drivers in it that see me waiting to cross their path, and can clearly see traffic at a halt a few yards ahead of them, but refuse to let me out, is utterly infuriating.
Like, you're going nowhere, and you can see I'm going the opposite way so I'm not going to delay you - is it absolutely necessary to keep me trapped in the side road just so you can sit six feet further forward in your traffic jam??
barbiepunisher@reddit
I'd also argue that if you're turning left and someone on the opposite side of the road is waiting to turn right into the same junction, even though it's your right of way, it's dickish not to let them go first, especially when not doing so will continue to hold up the flow of traffic. It takes seconds.
Montinator89@reddit
There's a junction right around the corner from my house that leads to a dual carriage way with traffic lights. Every day I'm sat at that junction in the morning while cars queuing at a red light block me from turning right because they haven't got enough common sense to keep the junction clear - there's no yellow grid to say they can't stop there so they aren't technically doing anything wrong but it's infuriating.
On the way home I need to turn right in to that same junction and at least 75% of the time some car is blocking me from turning in.
Needless to say when the lights turn green nobody will let you in because they're all rushing to get through the lights.
Drives me insane.
sputnikconspirator@reddit
Isn't it prohibited to block junctions regardless of yellow grids?
Cptnemouk@reddit
Or two lanes of traffic and you leave a gap at the junction. But some wet wipes in the next lane just blocks it anyway.
Status_Common_9583@reddit
As someone stuck in this situation every day trying to leave my own road I’ll add to this - pedestrians crossing in front of your car rather than behind meaning you miss your golden chance. Honestly I don’t know whether they’re meant to do this or not tbh, but whenever I’m walking and see a car waiting somewhere trying to turn onto a main road I cross behind them.
As well as being annoying for a diligent driver who’s seen me, I also don’t want to risk getting run over by someone who’s hyper focused on looking for a gap and has forgotten the possibility of a person darting out in front of them.
cari-strat@reddit
This too. I always cross behind whoever is at the front of the queue, too. It's just polite and as you say, likely safer.
TequanSimba@reddit
Use horn & beep at them indiscriminately whilst you edge forwards. They will get embarrassed or upset & it will help them to understand not to do that again in the future!
cari-strat@reddit
My son was in the front this morning and he decided to lean out of the window and give the driver a very loud hurrah and a slow clap as he sat stuck in front of us, awkwardly trying to pretend he hadn't noticed. 😂😂😂
i_enjoy_silence@reddit
Very noticable in London and Birmingham. Nobody will let you out leaving you no choice but to force your way out.
But where I am in Winchester it's the complete opposite. People will very quickly let you out and even give way to you in many situations where they just don't need to. The standard of driving here is very high.
Worth-Possibility369@reddit
Trying to make right turns at junctions and roundabouts at times is an absolute nightmare

dave8271@reddit
This is exactly the kind of situation where you edge out bit by bit as a few cars go past, until you can get yourself out enough that the next car simply has to either stop or crash into you (which would be ruled entirely their fault by insurance). Sometimes you just have to force the traffic.
SuperCerealShoggoth@reddit
Had somebody behind me beep at me the other week because I had the cheek to leave a gap for the people turning right into a junction.
They were going going for a second beep, but then saw me turn round and give them the death stare.
Guess moving forward, that little bit was incredibly important to them.

Every_Difference365@reddit
I hate this. I have to walk across a busy road to catch a bus to work. There’s an island in the middle of the road I use for crossing, and the amount of times people in cars crawl past without letting me cross to the middle, or from the middle to the other side, is infuriating. It would add 3 seconds on to their journey to stop but there’s been so many times I’ve watched my bus drive past because I can’t cross that damn road
Fudge_is_1337@reddit

Some people really shouldn't be allowed to drive. It's a lack of consideration for others. If it's non dangerous inconsideration that's something I suppose, often they will be dangerously inconsiderate. Some people just don't have the mindset that it's not a race or that they aren't the most Important person on the road.
Cycling really brings out the worst in drivers. Sometimes they'll speed dangerously last you just to sit at traffic lights. Especially if you've overtaken them. They take it as a personal slight. I'm so glad I don't cycle commute anymore.

My parents live opposite a school, we have a lot of issues with people turning on a shared private drive. One day I was loading my car on the drive and a parent pulled up and dropped her kids off on the drive. I got irate and asked wtf she was doing - her response was 'why can't you be helpful?'. Why the fuck are you on my drive??
MarshallMathers1973@reddit
Did she actually drop them off on your drive or on the public road/path that leads to your drive? There is a big difference
Particular-Bid-1640@reddit
On my drive, the other 5 houses down the drive have access over mine/my parents land.
MarshallMathers1973@reddit
It could be they think it's a public road not realising it's private land
Particular-Bid-1640@reddit
We've told them and the school multiple, multiple times. The school even tells the parents not to turn on the drive and use the junction opposite (it's a cul de sac). They know, they're just Jurassic arseholes
MarshallMathers1973@reddit
In that case, yes they are out of line
VolcanicBear@reddit
Yeah, my parents live opposite a school. They have verges that they own outside of their drive. People would regularly block the driveway. People utter cunts whenever asked to move so my parents can leave their property in their car.
This was fortunately easy to solve with some big fuck off rocks. The fact that they weren't very visible due to long grass made the "crunch" relatively satisfying, I'm told.

Probably me. I've started just parking across two bays. Cars are way too wide and spaces are way too small, people are dicks and really don't give a fuck about whether they smash their door into your car or not, and I generally don't have time to sit and play Tetris, so whenever possible I just park across two bays.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
When I used to drive my Daewoo Matiz I'd find people like you parked up and usually there'd be just enough space for the Matiz to park right under your wing mirror about 1cm from the drivers door still within the lines of one space.
spacetimebear@reddit
As long as your not dinging my door its all good.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Lol. In that circumstance you'll not even be dinging your own driver side door.
You're safe though as have a Picanto now which isn't much longer but is a lot wider.
Tbf you can take up as many spaces as you like provided it's not a super busy car park (so you're "stealing" a space from someone) and if it's a pay car park you pay for both spaces.

I had a similar incident.
I was in the lift at my office, and a lady was in the lift with me.
As the doors opened at my floor, I noticed that the lady motioned to get off, so I stood back and indicated that she should leave before me.
She got out, turned around, and said "How patronising...just because I'm a woman, you think you need to let me our first,??"
Fortunately my brain quickly kicked into action, and I immediately responded with "Nothing to do with your gender - it's to do with being polite.".
She huffed, and left. I couldn't believe it!!!

A man who crashed my daughter's party at a local play centre I with his 3 year old kid. He took a party bag for his daughter and came up at the end and had his 3 year old asking for a cupcake from the lot which we were packing into a takeaway container. Said yes to be polite and he responded with "are you sure?" Then before I could answer he took the whole container full and walked off.
I was baffled more than bothered.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
I would be bothered. Obviously not at the little one but the man would be asked to leave if no one recognised him and he would not have taken all the cupcakes. Your generosity letting the kid stay at the party is enough. He was just taking the piss.

Sitting in a car park with your engine idling. I regularly see one person in a car, presumably waiting for someone who's just popped in the shop, with their car engine idling. Maybe they're doing it to keep the air con/heat running, but it's fucking awful for so many reasons.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Can I add to that. People with their lights on in a car park or worse parking on the side of a dual carriageway way or something. When parked safely lights off, engine off unless you need it on.
Also pulling over for a text/phone call whatever and leaving the indicator on. You're either parked legally and safely so all lights off or your not parked safely so hazards on!
Aprilprinces@reddit
If it's within borders of someone's property it actually IS illegal; you can be fined for that
hhfugrr3@reddit (OP)
No it's not. You can't fine somebody for parking on your land. Private parking firms work by setting up a contract that you agree to by parking on the land. There needs to be adequate signage for that to work though.
Aprilprinces@reddit
Well, I work in the court (not a lawyer myself) and saw people being fined for exactly that - the difference being apparently whether the engine is running or not
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Public of private land? Think temporary trespass on residential private land hits different from parking on commercial land or public land.
Saysaywhat91@reddit
Surely parking on someone's private driveway is a crime? No?
hhfugrr3@reddit (OP)
No, it's not a crime.
Saysaywhat91@reddit
Well it's not criminal but there's a case for a civil suit. I mean personally if someone parked on my drive I'd find a way to block them in 😂 I'd be fuming.
That or I'd be installing a gate or something
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Gate is fine and legal. Blocking them in or damaging their car is illegal. Blocking access to the highway and criminal damage respectively.
Nothing illegal about lifting up all their windscreen wipers and pushing in their wing mirrors. Or zip tying your car to theirs or a wheely bin...or "accidentally" dropping a bin on their car or a large bucket of dirty water etc...
krystan@reddit
It is a crime but its a civil offense as its trespassing, I found this out a while ago as some people basically put there car into what they though was valet parking but it was just some rando dudes making a few pounds, they parked their car on a driveway and didn't realise the house was occupied, the people complained but the police refused to tow it as no criminal offense had been made, then they said they'd break the window release the break and move the car themselves and the police said if they did that its criminal damage and they'd be arrested. The only course of action was to invoke a civil procedure to remove the car (which was blocking their driveway and garage (with their car inside). The situation was resolved when the people came back off holiday and the guys turned up to remove the car and left.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
You can legally move it. You just can't damage it. So if you got 4 large blokes to pick it up and move it or a tow truck can move it then winner winner. After this get a gate or a moveable bollard or a large rock or an army of wheely bins.
dukeofplymouth@reddit

I live in a block of flats where each flat gets allocated 1 space. There are 4 guest spaces for about 100 flats. Invariably a few people have two cars & they park in the gusts spaces - sop you can't ever have a guest over and they can park nearby. Not technically a violation of anything but a tremendous dick move, IMO.
YouAreAwesome240418@reddit
Where I previously lived was in a couple of small blocks of flats. There were 3 visitor spaces. One guy used his own space, the adjacent visitor space for his second car (and got very aggressive with a neighbour when she parked there once) and then started bringing home a third car he drove to work that he parked in the visitor space of the next block over. Such a dick move.
BeatificBanana@reddit
Ah see our visitors' spaces are closely monitored as they're not to be used by residents. Management company knows all the residents' cars and will actively fine residents who park in the visitors' bays. They're for visitors only.
Of course on the other hand, no one is allowed to stay in a visitors' bay for more than so many hours so they're of no use if you have a guest over to stay the night anyway.

People who try to claim parking spaces outside their home as their own even if there are absolutely no parking restrictions or designated bays.
I live in small terraced street that was built in 1912 long before multiple car households were a thing and the parking is totally inadequate by todays standards - no driveways out front and the lanes are too narrow for a practical garage to park a car in - so on road parking only.
I've got an ongoing feud with a neighbour across the street who's asked me to move my car from outside his house on several occasions - I've always refused - usually because it's the only space left in the street or the nearest one to my house by far.
I've reminded him several times that one of the three cars in his household can often be found parked outside my home and I only have the one vehicle but that doesn't seem to factor in to the issue for him - only that only he should park outside his house. Guys a bellend.
Nevets_3891@reddit
Never under estimate people's ability to be lazy
Montinator89@reddit
Having argued with this guy on countless occasions at this point I can assure you it has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with some unjustified sense of entitlement to have at least one of his households three vehicles parked outside his home.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Complain to him every single time he or a family member Paris outside your house. He says anything you can point out his complaints about you. You won't move your car if he won't move his car(s).

Oh I've got a list of these!
I see everyone else has more than covered the idiots playing music/films/social media vids at volume with no headphones. My answer to this is play my own terrible music at high volume with no headphones! Because two can play at that game! Or start singing along or watching the film/vids over their shoulder - particularly fond of doing that when they do have headphones but hate the integrity of their own eardrums so I can hear everything.
Related to this is parents allowing their children to watch videos/cartoons/games on a tablet in a restaurant full volume no headphones. Lovely. Just what I wanted to hear - Peppa Pig.
Lots of comments about the lazy entitled mums and dads dropping off at school. I'll raise dropping off kids anywhere nowadays. The lazy drop off parents are fun. Technically illegal to park on a dropped kerb even if you have a disabled badge. Only excuse is medical emergency or the bluelighters. So goodness knows why everyone does it across our driveway so their little angels don't have to walk across the road. Can't children over the age of 10 walk by themselves anymore?!? Maybe not at night but mum can still pick you up by parking legally down the road then walking to get her child FFS.
"Saving a space" when parking. Admittedly have only seen this 3 times but some plonker standing in a space "saving" it for their friend/reli/partner while they circumnavigate the (globe) car park. Depending on other spaces and whether I can be bothered to argue I may choose to drive slowly into the space until I touch the plonker. Obvs not doing this is the person saving the spot is a child as they are not to blame for the adults entitlement.
Worst one by far - delivery drivers/companies lying about attempting a delivery or even blatantly delivering to obviously the wrong address. (I may be sore about a "missed" delivery at 5pm today while I was at home...)

She then told me that she was getting off at the next stop (half an hour away)?

Oh, I'll add one to this:
People courting "engagement" for TikTok.
Back in July, I got on a bus home from work in the late afternoon, and there was a late teens lad on the ground floor, with a bluetooth speak connected to his phone, blasting a version of Jingle Bells.
It was really clear, even from the glance I got before going upstairs, that he's sitting there with his finger poised over the "record" button to try and film someone who wants to stop him. Like he's purposefully being a complete and utter bellend with the goal of posting a video on TikTok.
Honestly though... I've some pity. His life must be so devoid of anything fulfilling to want to do something like that.

My mum is epileptic, the amount of times people have watched her collapse and smack her head, and instead of helping just muttered shes drunk/drugged and pulled their phones out is a joke.
she even wears a wrist band saying epilepsy, but no one comes to help her to even see it...
BarryFairbrother@reddit
I fully sympathise, but I've also had two occasions in my life where a person has just collapsed with no warning, had some kind of seizure, an ambulance has been called, and then the person has just got up as if nothing happened, and insists on going about their day, and is angry at the people who have called an ambulance.

The one with this that always baffles me slightly is people whipping out their phones to take a photo/video the second there is a crowd at a tube station. Like what does it actually achieve?

Relative-Dig-7321@reddit
Yeah I know, OP said what isn’t illegal, not hurting anyone but is still a bit dickish.
I kind of meant like the auditors and YouTubers like Charlie Vitch or whatever his name is. Or the inconsiderate people that whip their phone out when someone is hurt or are having medical emergencies. As opposed to CCTV, which I’m aware a lot of people dislike.
duskfinger67@reddit
I think the difference is whether you are filming in public, and happen to catch some people on video, or whether you are actively filming people who don’t want to be filmed.
Flagship_Panda_FH81@reddit
Isn't that the point of this thread? Things that aren't illegal but might be inconsiderate or rude?
20dogs@reddit
Reddit's going to find this one hard. A lot of /r/AmITheAsshole is people saying it's technically legal and therefore not a problem.

SourdoughBoomer@reddit
Whilst it's true that it isn't illegal, it becomes illegal when the usage of said footage is used for criminal activity. It's also worth nothing that defamation, data protection and copyright all comes into question when filming things, all of which you could get into quite a bit of trouble for if you just go around filming anything because it's 'legal'.

Reetgeist@reddit
Saw a post on my local sub Reddit recently about someone "auditing" a local park.
I can honestly say that if I took my kids to the park and someone was flying a drone around, filming me and my kids, it would boil my piss. Which is probably exactly the reaction they are looking for.
Relative-Dig-7321@reddit
Yeah cameras in a kids park should definitely be against the law.
bbravery@reddit
Strange take imo, not that I'm taking pictures at a kid's park, but how is it any different to just looking at the park for example?
Relative-Dig-7321@reddit
I think taking pictures/videos of other people’s children at a kids playground especially if there parents aren’t there is definitely odd behaviour at the very least.
Like why would an adult want pictures of not their kids? Maybe artwork or something but could be more seedy.
bbravery@reddit
Right but I'm asking, how is it different to looking at the park with your eyes? I agree it could be weird, but just the existence of a child in public isn't a rare occurrence, and there are cameras everywhere else
Relative-Dig-7321@reddit
Because you can keep a physical copy of a photograph which can be shared and referred back to.
Yeah taking a picture of a high street or a public park with kids in the photo but not the main subject of a photo wouldn’t be weird at all.
But taking a photo of kids in a kids playground with kids being the subject of the photo would be extremely disconcerting. As they are children’s spaces.
Same principle of taking photos through a school fence of kids playing would be weird as.
bbravery@reddit
I don't really see how it being a physical or digital copy makes a difference, since it's just something happening in public that anybody could go and look at. And again, I agree it's weird, but I don't think banning it makes any sense. For example, can you take a picture of your own kids in the park? And what if someone else's kid is in the background?
Relative-Dig-7321@reddit
‘can you take a picture of your own kids in the park? And what if someone else's kid is in the background?’ Yeah that’s fine obviously.
However an adult filming kids at a playground when they don’t have any of their own kids there and don’t have a valid reason screams peado/creep to me, and probably most other sane people.
OranjeBrian@reddit
Parking on someone’s drive should be illegal.
It’s no different than using a supermarket car park. It’s still private land.
Only difference is if you outstay your welcome at Aldi you get a PCN from parking eye, the only thing you get from someone’s drive is the evil eye
Broccoliholic@reddit
Interesting. I wonder if I could register my driveway as a car park? Or just put up a sign?
Scotster123@reddit
You can, and you can enforce it. But not in Scotland.
hitiv@reddit
you technically can. use just park if you actually want to do this. its populat in big cities and i always use it for parking. find your location, look through your options and book. never had any issues with using other people's drives for parking through just park
MuddyBoots472@reddit
We do this for my son at his uni. Rent a space on a drive for £50 a month.
Kitchen_Owl_8518@reddit
You can if you want to make extra cash. I discovered this by accident when two cars full of Teenagers parked on my driveway to go to the Reading Festival, saying they had paid for it online... Low and behold someone was advertising my driveway online for £20 a day lol
highrouleur@reddit
Isn't it cheaper than that to park in the official parking?? I last went in 2004 so may be a tad out of touch
Also that's fucking outrageous from the person that rented out your driveway but you have to admire their chutzpah
Acki90@reddit
Probably not. Parking for Download festival next year is 45 quid for the weekend.
Kitchen_Owl_8518@reddit
I have no idea I've not been in a long time and used to get VIP tickets through my job so never parked.
Having seen the queues to get out of the official parking and the general chaos that side of town since I was a kid, I would pay a bit more not to sit in it 😂
It wasn't long after this I had ring cameras installed but I do wonder how many Saturdays away fans have parked on my drive and fucked off to football and I've been none the wiser.
I admire the brass but would admire it more if he did it to someone else and not my drive 😂
theModge@reddit
As I understand it, you just need a sign that's sufficiently visible no one can argue they didn't see it.
Choosing to park there forms the contract, so they're bound to pay, because they can't argue they expected otherwise.
Freeman on the land type nutters try this with putting any random bollocks on a sign, but just doing something that you can reasonably expect to be allowed to do e.g. walking done a path to deliver letters doesn't form a contract.
Or something, massively not a lawyer, but owing the number of people who can afford lawyers getting parking fines this is something that gets discussed a lot
stocksy@reddit
You need the correct signage and you need to be accredited by one of the parking enforcement trade associations if you wish to be able to request the registered keeper's details from the DVLA. In practice, the rules around how and when PCN NTKs are issued are quite specific and you're likely to fall foul of them as a layman. It's a better idea to purchase a kit from one of the enforcement companies that offer this service. You won't be able to keep the money generated by the PCN but it's more likely to actually stick.
20127010603170562316@reddit
I think there are services where they'll provide you with signs, you just send them a photo of the offending vehicle. They handle the enforcement and send you a cut.
Ze_Gremlin@reddit
Well.. you can Airbnb your spare room, right? Why not rent out your drive if it's not currently in use?
If you're charging a fraction of what the big car parks charge, people will be clamouring hand over fist for it. A nice little beer token earner for while you're at work..
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Blocking access to the road is illegal
reddevil18@reddit
but blocking you from getting back in your land isnt. its a civil issue. and thats where the problem comes in
WarmTransportation35@reddit
Time to key their car or put up a sign saying "cars parked without permission will have tyres punctuered".
greggery@reddit
Then you get done for criminal damage. A sign won't protect you.
willcodefordonuts@reddit
Depends where you live. If you parked on someone’s drive where I’m from the best you’d come back to would be flat tires.
It should be 100% illegal. With stricter fines if you stop someone entering or leaving their property
greggery@reddit
The bonkers thing is that letting their tyres down would be considered criminal damage, whereas then parking in your drive is a civil trespass issue.
EndItAllSoonish@reddit
Just make trespass more of a criminal offence, so it covers everything on private land.
OddlyDown@reddit
Nah, this would likely just result in it being used mostly by very wealthy landowners etc to screw people over.
ClingerOn@reddit
There are a number of my houses on my street who will have neighbours over and the neighbours will park over other people’s drives.
It doesn’t make any sense. Why would you piss your friends neighbours off instead of parking over their drive. They’re not going anywhere. They’re sat in their house with you. It’s fucking stupid.
Hazz3r@reddit
Why?
They're waiting in their car off the road. Unless the person that owns the driveway needs the space, or the person in the car damages the land in some way, what's the harm, other than one fewer car sat on a grass verge clogging up the road?
OranjeBrian@reddit
Is it ok for someone to let themselves into your house and sit on your sofa too?
Hazz3r@reddit
Strawman. There's no reason for someone to let themselves into my house and sit on my sofa. There's good reason for someone to put their car on an empty drive outside a busy school.
Knowlesdinho@reddit
It was an extreme example of the same thing actually, i.e. trespassing.
Hazz3r@reddit
It's really not. It's a false equivalence. Unless you're hoovering your driveway once a week, most people don't place the same level of attachment to their drive that they do to the interior of their home. For example, most people don't mind couriers and posties trespassing on their land when they deliver post, but expect the same people not to step inside the home unless invited.
Knowlesdinho@reddit
Now that's a strawman argument!
Couriers and posties are providing a useful service which requires them entering a certain part of your land. It's accepted and welcomed.
Some moron using your drive to drop off and pick up kids is trespassing. If they block the drive they are at the very least selfish.
Hazz3r@reddit
No it's not. I'm make a point about the difference between the interior of the home and the driveway, I'm not comparing the acts of trespassing.
Knowlesdinho@reddit
If someone parks their car on your drive, they are trespassing on private land. There is no circumstance where it is acceptable to park on someone's drive without their express permission.
You're the one making strawman arguments, you're the one being downvoted because nobody agrees with you. I wager my spare parking space that you would not accept some random person pulling into your drive and just idling there for several minutes morning and night.
It's ok to be wrong you know.
Anyway, I'm done with this conversation. I'll leave you the last word as you'll want that, people like you always do.
Hazz3r@reddit
Trust me, I am truly okay with being downvoted. That Edit was to encourage people to actually reply to me, so that someone might actually convince me I was wrong. I had 16 downvotes and not a single reply.
I haven't made a strawman argument. My points have illustrated that, while wrong to do so, the idea of making the act of idling on someones driveway for 5-10 minutes a criminal act is ludicrous. The vast vast majority of people would be none the wiser that it happened if they weren't there to see it.
TheGreatBatsby@reddit
I need to sit down somewhere comfortable because my legs are tired and my hemorrhoids are acting up (leaking again). Open up.
Hazz3r@reddit
Oh look, it's that idea that someone is going to damage your property which I mentioned in the initial comment.
And regardless, people are making a false equivalence between the inside of your home and your driveway. If you care as much about your drive as you do your home then you would have the whole thing locked up, if not a gate then a bollard.
OranjeBrian@reddit
Yeah because creating a situation where you have to drive across a pavement “outside a busy school, on a busy road, with lots of traffic” is really helpful to the pedestrians isn’t it?
Hazz3r@reddit
Road safety has nothing to do with the legality of parking on someones drive. You're clutching.
Remarkable-Wash-7798@reddit
But I own MY driveway. There are many like it. But this one is mine.
I also own my couch which I don't use a lot. Your NOT welcome to pop your feet up. And before someone mentions that coming into my house is different than my driveway. My couch is on my driveway.
Competitive-Ad-5454@reddit

Karabearbubbles@reddit
I used to rent and had to pay for the parking space on the drive. Because of that, I didn't have a permit and couldn't park on the road.
I didn't mind people using the space when I wasn't but it was frustrating to find it taken when I needed it, and I had to park on the road and risk a fine. Imo, it's fine to use a space with permission from the owner but you often find these people don't ask, and don't respond kindly when asked to move.
Hazz3r@reddit
Absolutely. As soon as it becomes aggravated trespass it's a whole different ball game. That is and should be a criminal offence.
wandering_beth@reddit
If the car is poorly maintained and has an oil leak will they offer money to clean the stains left on my drive? I would much rather they clog up the road than damage my property, as you know they will fuck off and do nothing about the oil stain they leave behind
A small oil leak may not be something they've noticed, but my drive definitely will notice it
Hazz3r@reddit
As I mentioned, as long as they don't damage the drive, I see no problem with it. What you mentioned I would categorise as "damaging the drive".
wandering_beth@reddit
I know, I was just pointing out that they can damage it without noticing or realising. Not their driveway so they can fuck.off and park elsewhere
Elongulation420@reddit
They could put up one of those Sovereign Citizen type pseudolegal nonsense signs (as per the UK Driving subreddit page a few days back)
FantasticFolder@reddit
I'm pretty sure it's trespass
Remarkable-Wash-7798@reddit
Can I not trespass them off my land?
Get off my drive, no. Proceeds to use reasonable force to drag their car off my driveway.
Even better although a slight inconvenience to the property owner. Install a drop down Ballard thing, don't have it up, wait until they park on the drive, then pop it up. Proceed to go to work.
mbrowne@reddit
Unfortunately that makes you into the one committing a crime. You are not allowed to block access to the highway.
Remarkable-Wash-7798@reddit
AHH law, it's a funny old thing.
Interesting though, I seen a newspaper report about a piece of land next to a beach (privately owned). The owner was allowing the land to be used as parking for the beach, however it had been used as a site for a traveller group. The owner then placed massive concrete blocks to the entrance/exit of the land and said he will not move them if the group don't leave and take their rubbish with them.
Also what if my drive has a gate, or I own a farm with a long farmers track. I lock the gate whilst someone is on the land? Same rule I'm commiting a crime?
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Aldi need to have that car park registered and go through the proper procedure to give an invoice. They can't touch the car. I bet we drive and park on private land all the time without thinking about it, businesses and friends and family. They have to make it a civil issue due to so many edge cases.
Spiritual-Rabbit-907@reddit

There's a lad who must have just gotten his first car, and he keeps parking on my drive. Along our road, most houses have off road parking, none have real driveways. We are nestled behind another house, so we have a long driveway.
He was just parked outside my house so I went out to ask him if he needed something. He was just waiting for a friend but wanted to be off the road. I had friends coming over so I asked if he could move to not block them coming in. Since then, he just parks on my drive almost daily. It's not illegal but it's really fucking annoying me. It just feels so invasive!

I see it discussed in our local FB often and I'm also personally against it as I have a 3 year old with me when I go shopping.
It always seems to be elderly people but the argument I see online is always "they struggle to walk".
I can't see the difference between parking in a parent/child spot and a normal car park spot behind them that's 20 steps away.
glasgowgeg@reddit
If they struggle to walk, being 20 steps closer is going to be easier for them.
ExpressAffect3262@reddit
People always bring up that argument.
Ok sure, 20 steps, but then what? They're walking around a store for 1000 steps.
Is 1020 steps noticeably different to 1000 steps?
glasgowgeg@reddit
Do you think disabled spots should be positioned towards the back of a car park as well?
For someone with mobility issues, I'm sure they appreciate 20 less steps, especially when carrying things back to their car.
ExpressAffect3262@reddit
I feel like you're arguing over something that's not been said lol
Both disabled and parent/child are typically at the front of the store.
So where are you getting them being at the back of the store from lol
glasgowgeg@reddit
You're arguing that 20 steps make no difference, so I'm asking you if they should be at the back of the car park.
You've misread my comment.
aredditusername69@reddit
Yes. Parent & Child spots are there for safety, not to save a walk, which is the point that a lot people seem to miss.
X0AN@reddit
It's not a safety feature, it's extra space to get a baby and toddler out.
aredditusername69@reddit
It's both. Parent & Child spaces usually have direct access to a walkway so your kids aren't running into cars trying to park.
ExpressAffect3262@reddit
Safety & wider spaces for getting your baby/toddler in & out.
Absolutely kills your arms trying to get a baby out of the chair seat when you can only open your door ever so slightly.
aredditusername69@reddit
Yep, its a nightmare. Always worried about hitting the car next to you too.
X0AN@reddit
Disabled parking should be infront of the store.
Extra wide spaces for able bodied people should be the further spaces away. You want a bigger space? Fine, park at the back. Would stop them being abused.
ExpressAffect3262@reddit
They are lol, both are.
Dros-ben-llestri@reddit
Eh - anyone who needs the extra space to get out should park there imo (as someone with 2 under 5s). That goes for pregnant women, people with temporary issues like casts or crutches, or the elderly who may find getting up and out of the car a bit more difficult.
But, special place in my hell for those who loiter in those spots with engines still on and/or smoking with the windows open. And then leave the trollies out. Bastards.
Upstairs-Hedgehog575@reddit
Yep it is really annoying - you can often see cars with no child seats, motorbikes, fully loaded cars on the way to the tip etc that clearly don’t have children.
I’d rather they put them away from the door to discourage people taking them out of laziness - because it’s not really the location I’m after, it’s the clearance around the car when I’m trying to lift a heavy wriggling toddler into his seat - something not easily done with another car parked a foot away.

Sygga@reddit
I hate people who have zero consideration for people with pets. I was training my old, anxious cat to walk on a harness. Spent ages getting him used to it and going around our garden in it.
Everything was going so well, he was exploring and wanted to go through the side gate into the front garden. Some git in a van went past, obviously thought it was hilarious that a cat was on a lead and wanted to let me know, so blasted his horn.
My cat freaked out and bolted, ripping the extendable leash handle out of my hand. So, he is terrified because a large van made a loud, scary noise and he is now being chased around the garden by a large bit of black plastic making a racket. I catch him and take him inside, but as I'm trying to get the harness off, he bolts again and is chased around the house by said bit of black plastic. When I catch him, he is physically shaking.
He also had Idiopathic Cystitis (so when he gets scared, it triggers a Cystitis attack, acidic and painful urine), so a £30 trip to the Vets and another £30 or so for painkillers.
Any attempt to put the harness on him again, even several years later, caused him to freeze, cower and shake. Every time a large van would go past the house, he would run away and hide.

Hazz3r@reddit
Vue literally have signs that say leave your rubbish in the auditorium.
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
And Vue also has maybe ten minutes between films if people stay for the credits! They come in with one bin bag, they’re not recycling. The company may say that but that doesn’t mean it’s actually alright or respectable to do.
Hazz3r@reddit
It's possible that Vue are having the recycling separated at a Waste Transfer Station. That's how it worked at the old Office block I used to work in. It would certainly make sense given their quick turnarounds for auditoriums.
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
They also have recycling bins in their lobbies so you can not be a lazy arsehole and take your damn rubbish with you.
Hazz3r@reddit
Or you can take the instructions of the service you're using and leave it in the auditorium.
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
Are you seriously so dense as to believe that a company would have its employees best interests at heart? They have TEN MINUTES to clean up all the mess, there’s enough to do with just spillages etc, sometimes it’s only one person cleaning those busy theatres. It costs you nothing and takes virtually no time to just take your crap with you and put it in the bin outside, it’s literally on your way out. I won’t be discussing this with you further. You’re selfish, live with it or change, I don’t care, but there is no good reason to leave your rubbish behind in the cinema screen and that’s a fact.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Have you ever worked for a cinema? It was generally easier us for folk to leave the rubbish at their seats rather than take it with them, especially unfinished drinks.
Hazz3r@reddit
It's selfish to do what you're told?
Calo_Callas@reddit
Saw a film on Saturday and one of the pre-film messages was 'Please leave your rubbish by your seat'.
glasgowgeg@reddit
I worked in Cineworld for several years, the bins aren't big enough for that if it's a busier showing.
Leave things like unfinished drinks at your seats. I would generally prefer if folk left stuff at their seats, it was easier to clean up than having to run out and empty the foyer bins whilst we were supposed to be cleaning the screens.
MarshallMathers1973@reddit
There are people being paid to clean up and a lot of cinemas ask you to leave your rubbish there.
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
Yes to clean up. Not to tidy up. People are paid to clean all sorts of places that doesn’t mean you’re not a prick for making it harder!
glasgowgeg@reddit
There are things that are easier to leave at your seat, like unfinished drinks.
Don't put unfinished drinks in the bins, because they burst in compactors and it's horrible to clean up.
Leave unfinished drinks at seats, we would bring in an old mop bucket and empty them into that.
TheJobSquad@reddit
At Vue cinemas they have signs saying to leave your rubbish at your seat. I can't do it. This is mental, but I ended up putting my near empty popcorn box in my bag to recycle at home. It just didn't feel right to leave it for someone else to clear away.
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
I mean they have bins outside the theatres! I don’t get people defending it, sure the company might say so, I go all the time to various chains and haven’t seen that message in years, but there’s literally ten minutes between showings sometimes and especially if it’s a busy film… they have enough to clean with spillages etc

Just to add on to this, people with massive cars or work vans that don't fit in parking spaces who just take up multjple spaces at the front of the car park instead of parking further back to lessen the inconvenience for everyone else.
lovesorangesoda636@reddit
Yeah. Back in the day I drove a minibus for a uni club and it was too long for a normal space. We parked it as far away from where we were going as possible so we weren't using two "high value" spaces.
Far too many people buy these giant cars and can't actually drive them properly. And because they're bigger they just assume its ok for them to drive and park like shit.

I look at it like this. Unless you're truly a person without defenses , then you say and do something yourself otherwise you can't complain. I live for the restorative value of totally justified violence. Best trick is don't gradually escalate. Ask politely. Top-Setting5213@reddit
Just in general it's weird how phone interaction trumps real life interaction every time. I work at a checkout and the amount of people who treat you like you're not even there because they're having a chat on the phone is wild. It would be so easy to just say, "two seconds I'm at the checkout", and put the phone down for a minute to pay for your shit.
Even worse when they ignore your presence entirely the whole time then right at the end start asking for a bag, asking for stuff behind the kiosk and whatnot. This is stuff I could have sorted for you by now if you'd been willing to acknowledge my presence at the start.
banedlol@reddit
I've always had a general annoyance to the way that phone calls immediately jump to the front of a queue even though you might be there in person.
If you were in a conversation with someone and another person walked up wanting to ask them something, they would (normally) wait their turn.
This is why my phone is always on silent w/ no vibrate.
chrissie64@reddit

Sat in a bus station waiting, the queue is huge. Then new people come over, go outside to "smoke" etc, and stay out there so they can be at the front when the bus comes.
And they all just gather in a mass crowd out there too, so the real queue ends up stuck and having to wait behind the chaos.
MyBeardSaysHi@reddit
As a smoker and bus taker, I stand well out of the way of the bus stop after work and waiting for the bus but I will never let myself be the first on the bus. Putting possessions on the seat next to you on a busy bus/train. Or sitting on the outside seat with an empty window seat (when there is no mobility issue or the like).
I know it's easy enough to ask the person to move them, but I can't fathom the thought process to do it in the first place. I simply can't bring myself to do it. I would feel embarrassed and mortified at the thought that the people around me think that I'm a jerk. The same reason why I never play phone audio/video on speaker mode in public - not because it's rude (which it is), but because of how I will be perceived. Even on an empty bus I keep my bag on my lap until I am sure that no one else is going to get on or my stop is next etc.
knightsbridge-@reddit
It's the civil wrong of trespassing to park your car on someone's driveway without their permission. Still not technically a crime, but crime-adjacent.
Anyway, sitting on the outside seat of a bus with the inside seat empty because you don't want to sit next to anyone.
I get it. Nobody wants to sit next to a stranger on the bus. Given the choice, we'd all have a seat to ourselves.
But when I'm going home from work, and I'm exhausted, and I just want to sit down and I stare at the rows of selfish pricks who've claimed an entire row for themselves...
Sometimes I ask them to move. More often I just stare at them vindictively for the whole journey.
lotissement@reddit
Why wouldn't you just ask them to move every time? I've never had a problem doing this.
MarshallMathers1973@reddit

28374woolijay@reddit
Some people prefer aisle seats to window seats. That doesn't make them "pricks" unless they refuse to get up to allow someone access to the window seat. I often sit in an aisle seat because some people aren't exactly quick to let you out, whereas I don't like to delay the bus by waiting until it has stopped before getting up.
AffectionateJump7896@reddit
The prick test is then their response to you asking to sit down.
If they get up, let you into the window seat and sit back in the aisle seat, then it's because they prefer the aisle seat. Not a prick.
If they slide along into the window seat, it's that they don't mind sitting in the window seat, but hoped to deter you from sitting next to them by sitting in the aisle seat, and are therefore "a prick".
Sufficient-Drama-150@reddit
Having been groped in a window seat, I'm an aisle girl all the way.
ProfessorYaffle1@reddit
Yes, pretty much every time this issue comes up there's a bunch of (mostly) women explaining we sit on the aisle because we've experienced being trapped by a creep , or sexually assaulted or harassed, when we don't.
folklovermore_@reddit
Yes this. Like obviously if the bus/train is busy then I'll happily let someone in. But if it's empty I'm sitting in the aisle seat and putting my bag on the window seat because I've had enough creepy guys take me sitting in a window seat with a free seat next to me as an invitation to get in my face.
chrissie64@reddit
This is me - I am always willing to let someone into the window seat or will offer to do so. My big fear, though, is that they will plonk themselves down in the aisle seat
iamanalienin@reddit

ManInTheDarkSuit@reddit

Ronsona@reddit
I'm in aisle sitter too, but only when I can't physically fit in the seat.

ManInTheDarkSuit@reddit

I walk to and from my parents a few times a week (they only live 10 minutes away), there's a little path walkway with a holding rail, at the moment it's fine walking up/down without using it but it really comes in handy during the winter months, as it's either walk on the grass and around all the parked cars, or run the likelihood of going on your arse on the driveways after this path. Walking that side is another hill so it is easier to cross and walk the other side. Past week or two so fucknugget has taken to parking RIGHT over it on the curb every morning and evening. I only have to divert slightly and walk up a driveway but I've silently flipped it off walking past every day.
New_Line4049@reddit
Where I live it's on street parking in marked areas. There's not really enough space, meaning youb often have to park a decent distance away from your house, and it can take multiple trips round the one way system to find a space. I usually get lucky in a side street just past my house. It's a short side street with not many houses, but a good amount of parking, so usually there's space for one or two more cars at least when I get home on there. One of the marked areas on this side street is big enough to accommodate 2 cars, 3 if they're all small cars at a push. I came home one evening last week, and as is often the case there weren't spaces open on my street. I tried the side street, all full up, apart from this double space, it only had one larger MPV in it. Normally you'd still get a second car in (and mines not exactly a stretched limo) but this MPV had parked perfectly in the middle of the marked area. Meaning to get a second car in, you'd have to cut it in half and put half behind and half in front of the MPV. It's double yellows either side of the parking space too, and we do see parking attendants round a fair bit, so not worth risking being half on them.
It's also pretty common to see lines of cars parked on these streets having left much more room between them than needed, such that everyone could comfortably shuffle a foot or two closer and make room for another car. Of course, they never do however, and muggins here gets left driving in circles looking for a space.

It's their driveway, and now if they want to park on their own driveway, they've got to have a confrontation with this selfish Karen.
Not to mention the wear and tear on their brand new driveway.
X0AN@reddit
I had some stupid woman park on my driveway and when I told her to piss off she said no.
So I just blocked her car in with my own.
I was going and would be drinking in the evening, so I just left her and my car blocking her there.
Obviously her car was still there when I got home, though she wasn't.
When I came back from work the next day her car had gone and I never saw her again.
Hopefully she has now learnt not to park in peoples driveways.
But honestly what sort of twat parks in someones driveway and when you're told to move. Just move.
homelaberator@reddit
This cuts right to the heart of the moral issue. When we say "no big deal" we are deciding how others feel about what we do to them. We are stripping a really basic autonomy over someone when we decide for them what their emotions are.
We don't have the right to decide if it's hurting anyone or not. Not only are we imposing our will by using their property for our own desires, we take a further step and impose our will on how they should feel about it.
Maybe, they had entered their drive into "Britain's best drives" and had spent all morning cleaning it ready for the photographer who is coming in 12 minutes. And by parking there you've just turned the most exciting day of their lives into an incredibly, gut churning, stressful one.
Maybe, they are waiting for the funeral home to deliver their husbands body for a wake and had cleared out extra space so that he could make that one last trip home with dignity.
Maybe they'd just popped up to the shops with their fleet of US style pickups, and will now have nowhere to park the third one.
Maybe, the love children and deliberately bought a home near a school because they love the noise of hundreds of kids emptying onto the streets every afternoon and particularly enjoy parents parking in their drive because they remember the struggle when they had kids.

Montinator89@reddit
I mean even if their intent was to be nasty to the kids, this still feels like it's more in the real spirit of Halloween than 99% of the stuff you see nowadays.
If you don't like kids but your door is going to get knocked by them all night regardless, tricking them rather than treating them definitely seems like it's a win for everyone.
Halloween is just turning in to "everybody gets free sweets" in recent years which kind of takes all the fun out of it.
We need more kid hating pranksters to keep the real spirit of Halloween alive.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
The "real spirit" of Halloween has always been kids going door to door getting free sweets, right back to guising in Scotland and Ireland hundreds of years ago.
"Trick or treat" refers to the more modern variant where you either give kids sweets or the kids perform a trick on the house-owner.
House owners tricking kids has never been a part of the tradition, and isn't what "trick or treat" means.
Shaper_pmp@reddit
I think you've missed the point of that tradition.
The tradition was that kids would shout "trick or treat!" and then the house-owner would either give them sweets or the kids would play a trick on them.
These days people are a lot less tolerant of kids egging their house or toilet-papering their bushes, so the "trick" part has kind of died out as everyone has learned to respect the "no decorations outside means don't knock on the door" convection, but it never meant the house-owner playing tricks on the kids.
That's not part of the fun of it - that's just someone being shitty to kids instead of simply refusing to take part.

Anecdotal experience related to the OPs story on how dickish this is, I have a disability am a blue badge holder. I used to live near a couple of schools and while it was permit holder parking so technically no waiting over 10 mins, parents would fill up the entire street including driveways and just sit in their cars waiting. I am very limited on mobility but keep my mobility equipment in my car (there’s nowhere to store it in the house), meaning I need to be able to park within 20 metres of my home. Normally not an issue, but there were times I drove home at around the time kids get picked up, and because all these parents were just sitting in their cars outside my house, I couldn’t park anywhere near my home. I tried to communicate the situation to no avail and had to wait for a while for parents to move so I could get into my house.
I do sympathise with parents wanting to pick their kids up from nearby, but it’s really difficult if you’re a resident being impacted by a huge influx of cars on a small street. Especially if like me you’re dependent on being able to park next to your home.

Oh, I’ve got one for you from Saturday in Ipswich! So, after the match, I’m walking down Portman Road, where the mood's half celebratory, half muttering about the ref, you know the usual. Anyway, there's this bloke in a Ford Fiesta who’s clearly decided he’s too important to queue with the rest of us to leave the car park. So what does he do? He pulls his car onto the pavement, right up next to a family walking by, and just sits there with his engine running, waiting for a “gap” in traffic.
Now, technically, he’s not breaking any law, I guess—he's just… on the pavement. And the rest of us are dodging him like he's part of a poorly planned obstacle course. No one's really getting hurt, but you can feel everyone else thinking, “Mate, that’s just a bit much, isn’t it?”
And then, to top it off, he doesn't actually get out any faster, because every time a gap opens, some poor sod in a Vauxhall zips in ahead of him! Couldn’t have written better karma if I tried.

Some of the worst offenders are those in large commercial vehicles who cannot be bothered finding a suitable space for their vehicle and walking an extra 30 seconds to get their breakfast sandwich and energy drink.

Civil not criminal though, so police can't/won't do anything and reporting to the Council is unlikely to achieve anything unfortunately.
Montinator89@reddit
Trespass is a civil matter, not an offence.
If you are actively blocking somebody else in by parking on their driveway, it then amounts to obstruction, which is a criminal offence.
But that works both ways, if someone parks on your driveway and you decide to block them in by parking in front of it, then you are obstructing them and committing an offence.
It's a bit mad.

I used to live on a street like that in The Meadows in Nottingham.
The private school was in a former church and the surrounding streets were all red brick terraced houses, some were owner occupied, by first time buyers or by elderly people who'd lived there for several decades, but most were rented out either students, or to young working people like us, in their 20s.
Parking was always a nightmare, even in my little ancient hatchback.
I had an early finish one day a week, which meant that I got home from work around the same time as the end of the school day.
I would get back to find Range Rovers parked haphazardly all over the place, taking up all the very limited spaces.
Often, they'd be parked dangerously on the corner of the junction and over the pavement, blocking your view to make the turn.
It was so infuriating and obnoxious because these people didn't live anywhere near the area and they just didn't give a shit about the problems they were causing for the people who did live there.

I could be wrong, but isn't that a crime? Parking in someone else's drive? Sounds like a crime to me, or at least some kind of violation, or everyone would be doing it all the time, right? It's definitely hurting the people who own that drive, assuming you don't define hurt just as physical injury.
hhfugrr3@reddit (OP)
No it's not a crime. It would be a civil wrong for which you could sue; however, there's no real lose to be compensated for and by the time you got to court the car would have long since left.
Montinator89@reddit
I believe I'm right in saying that if you park on an empty driveway, it amounts to trespass, which is a civil matter.
But if you park on a driveway and block someone else's vehicle in it then amounts to obstruction which is a criminal offence.
Which is also to say, if someone parks on your driveway and you get home and say "fuck it, I'll just block them in" you are committing a criminal offence by obstructing them. Which is absolutely ridiculous.

I’m not being a smartass, just trying to lead you to the correct conclusion. You already know it’s not a crime. The conclusion therefore is that, no, you cannot be prosecuted. It’s a civil matter, so the police (or CPS) will not get involved.

You can, so if someone is trespassing you can ask them to leave and they have to. If they refuse to then leave it's now aggravated trespass which is a criminal offence, and you then have the power to remove them with reasonable force or to call the police to remove them.
(I posted this above but thought you'd need to see it).

You can sue for trespass, but it's not a crime. The problem with suing over something like this is that you've lost nothing so there's no real compensation and the car would be long gone by the time you got near a court.

park your car in front so the dicks going nowhere,

blocking access to the highway is a crime :(
Warburton379@reddit
Trespassing is a civil matter not a criminal offence (unless circumstances bump it up)

Yeah and it's only that in the first place if they ask you to do one and you don't.

My friend used to live opposite a school and had somebody do that. They then got out and started walking towards the school with their kid. Acted like he was doing nothing wrong when my friend went out and told him to move it. It wasn't even like there was nowhere else to park, but that would have meant walking further than my friends driveway.
Although in your case, perhaps the woman in the car knew the owners of the house and already had permission to sit there?

People not watching their kids out in public. Instead if actually doing my job I had to look after a 1 year old at work because he was throwing cutlery all around and going through the bins just for his dad to come and yell at me for not letting his kid into a bin. Or on a plane sitting in front of a kid who can't stop kicking my seat while the mum is too busy going through her phone

There's a roundabout at the end of my road that's always slow during peak hours and has a filter lane to turn off into a suburb that, when queuing orderly, I see 2-3 chancers go down the filter lane, across the inside lane of the roundabout and then force their way back into the main lane.
They almost always get blocked by the first few cars who commit to a bumper-to-bumper line defence. Dicks.
