Hello, I am back.

And at the advice of the kind mods, I have shown up in this thread once again. Much thanks to them for thier guidance.

You'll probably recognize me from my other comments full of "much love to you ❤️" and other philosophical platitudes.

I'll preface this by saying I mean the following with the utmost sincerity. I am Canadian, and as such have no real ties to the outcome of the USA election, besides foreign affairs.

I do not come with meaningless thoughts and prayers, or empty words, or simple requests to set the better example. I come with a simple observation, and a plea.

I was here, and I have been here, watching. Reading, listening. Observing the interactions we have with one another, for just over eight years on reddit. A profesional lurker, if you will.

Humanity is fascinating. Our interactions especially so.

After yesteray? After the disaster that was any comment section you clicked on in any corner of the internet - or worse...this morning - I come to you now with this rather trite, rather...yes...simple idea.

We are all the same.

And my plea - sit with the words.

Do not dismiss those who voted for the candidate you fear as "evil" or "ignorant" or worse.

These are humans. They make up half your country, half your population, half your families.

I'm not urging you to dismiss your concerns, close to your hearts, for that would be unconscionable - as one would argue it would be to ask them to do the same.

There is something inherently wrong with a system in which no one feels represented.

There is something especially moraly wrong with a system that takes that feeling and corrupts it, turning that against the citizens themselves.

Disagreeing with you should not equate to hating you, and I remain firm on this metric if humanity is ever going to remain functioning as a society.

Despair only wins if you let it - another platitude that is, unfortunately, in my experience all too true.

From where I stand as an outsider with no real informed opinion other than what I read on reddit, and the news, and other media platforms, or from what I can find through searches I mange to conduct in my own spare time...

You cannot attack an entire demographic of individuals and then be surprised when they do not vote for the party expected.

Language is a powerful thing. Attacks against one's character especially so.

As a Canadian, it occurs to me that Trump, perhaps, does not represent the entire Republican party, but is simply the figurehead of the next four years, as it were.

I get the sense this is the general feeling whenever an election happens here in my country, anyways.

And perhaps there is some merit in considering that those who voted for Trump voted for things other than those directly associated with Trump himself.

And to equate their moral being to the worst of Trump's is to do them, yourself, and your country, a great disservice.

After all, I would also argue that the Democrats could have picked a better figurehead for this election, too.

I do not say any of this to diminish your very valid feelings of hurt and betrayal. You are welcome to reply to me in however way you wish.

It's so easy to make assumptions based on people without those things.

I am no contact with my own mother in recognition if above. I am breaking my own cycles, and struggle with my own faults, just like any other human.

My children make me want to be a better person, and force me to examine the parts of myself I would rather remain hidden. Alas, children are mirrors, are they not? You can't hide what they so obviously reflect.

Loving yourself often means protecting yourself from such people the above poster mentions.

As collapse continues daily living will continue to get harder and harder. More corporate greed will make surviving harder, larger weather disasters will interfere with daily life, conservatives will continue to use fear and stochastic terrorism to make the world seem scary, etc etc etc.

It's human nature to "try anything" when what we have isn't working. The voting populace will continue to slap buttons and pull levers in an attempt to right the plane.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Democrat HQ. We can guess how her concession speech is going to go; I'm proud of the campaign we ran, congratulations to my opponent, importance of the peaceful transfer of power yadda yadda yadda.

I hate to say this but I knew this would happen. I felt it in my heart and gut from the start and I know exactly why.

The Democrats lost few a few very specific reasons and I can list them here. This is a relatively shallow analysis but I welcome extra feedback.

The economy. If there is a major hot-button issue that pisses people off when it's going badly, this is the one. I kept coming across scores of people complaining that the economy was really bad and a number of them directly blamed the Administration as the major player at fault. Seemingly endless inflation, poor jobs numbers, and weak financial returns. All of these factors were brewing a very turbulent and anxiety-ridden consumer base.
Personal attitudes about culture. It is no coincidence if you've been seeing a lot more "right wing" advertisements and cultural reactions to things in the news. It shouldn't be a shock if you've seen folks constantly airing complaints about diversity and representation in movies and games in just the last few years.
Rampant conspiracies. Social media has done a very poor job of quelling information that has no factual basis. This makes it much easier to accuse groups of things that aren't even true. This isn't even counting the rapid emergence of A.I., which has ultimately destroyed public trust in information. Nearly anything can be faked now.
Choices between nearly equal unpopular policy. Something I noticed from people who were originally going to vote Democrat felt hesitation. It obviously isn't enough to dislike the other candidate more. It takes strong policy that shows a clear improvement over the other candidate and party. As people can probably tell, there wasn't a hard enough push for the parties to differentiate themselves and voters lost confidence.

To those of you who couldn't see this coming a mile away, I'm sorry. I tried to tell a lot of people.

I could see the writing on the wall from the beginning.

I understand how hard it is to accept when a group you're putting your faith and hopes is doing this sort of manipulation. But the reality is that all major power players are comfortable with deception and lip service. If you put your hope in them it will be exploited in one way or another.

Maybe in this moment of despair for many, people will have the clarity to connect the dots: How did the polls somehow tell two opposing stories, how could our largest social media spaces so over-represent one voice and narrative, how could all of the rage and activism amount to this little? How did all of these vibes lead to a collapse of turnout?

It shouldn't feel strange at all though if you've been paying attention to climate news - or nearly any other major issue. The same generalized strategy is applied across the board: Controlling the narratives is the second best thing to controlling reality.

But reality does not care about narratives. Narratives can play games within the realm of believability (and quite a bit past it) but they can't change material reality. Stray too far from the truth and there will be repercussions. People's trust and faith will be broken. Tipping points will tip. While Republican narratives are filled with lies, Dems repeated one particularly fateful and unbelievable lie: That things are headed in a good direction and we are all going to be fine.

And that's where we stand today in the climate picture: We are telling ourselves stories to comfort ourselves, while the gap between those stories and reality approaches a point in which the narrative can no longer survive. But the blowback for this one isn't going to be another right-wing ideologue: It's going to usher in the administration of a wrathful Mother Nature over the whole planet.

Thankfully many people in this sub continue to see the forest for the trees; they reject the greenwashing narratives spun by most of the other climate subs. I assume this is also why many here saw through the political kayfabe.

But for those spiraling amidst narratives, unable to anchor themselves to terra firma amidst the gales, unable to reconcile what they've been told vs. what they've seen: Connect the dots.

A population cannot free itself from liars telling a story they don't want to hear by electing liars telling a story they do want to hear. The only path to freedom is rejecting the liars altogether. Helping a lesser evil may occasionally make tactical sense but even in those cases it is usually the result of a failed strategy - and strategy is what wins wars, not tactics.

It would be better that none of us are represented and we all understand it, than to have just an inkling of representation paired with a widespread belief of total representation. And for those of us in our prime, I believe there is no choice more moral than choosing to fight a conflict that has been brewing for a century rather than kicking the can on to future generations - like our children for those who have any, or the children of our loved ones for those of us without.

When I first shared a story recently about a supposed astroturf campaign organized by Dem staffers, I received a fair amount of pushback (for this sub at least). I was curious who would judge the story from my words vs. who would look into the story for themselves. The story was first published by The Federalist - a despicable outlet. However it contained data on real users that could be verified by checking their post history, and it contained a spreadsheet of astroturfed posts that could be similarly verified by looking at the submission history of subreddits. I only did this briefly (by my standards) because I don't support the DNC or the RNC and third parties in the US are barely even in the picture. Nonetheless I found it quite telling that several users who had their wagons' hitched to the DNC chose to spoke out against the article without even taking a glance at the data. That's what I expected would happen. And it's one reason why I wasn't surprised when the US election turned into a blowout. (I don't hold ill-will against any of these individual people so I hope that they are coping well today.)

So let's do a little retrospective. Did jumping on people expressing their hesitations and complaints about the DNC campaign turn out to be a successful strategy? No. Did donating, canvassing, and flooding social media spaces for the platform that consisted 99% of "We're not the other guy!" work out for the incumbents? No. Did donors and activists condition their support with strings attached to steer the platform toward something viable that would actually speak to the people and their concerns? No.

Should they have? Well, it's hard to say for certain since that isn't what happened. But there's no way it could have turned out worse than it did! And plenty of us warned that this was going to happen so it isn't like it was unpredictable. 2016 is another data point supporting the same conclusion.

Let's circle back now to the supposed astroturfing. The US is a country that elected Trump the first time. If anyone was paying attention, he was just as clearly a threat then as he is now. And yet he was someone the country was willing to elect. The country didn't change and we hardly learned anything we didn't already know about Trump in the meantime. In the contemporary US, Trump is a viable and strong candidate.

So what was the logic in making echo chambers that believed that he was no match for Harris? How did denying the conviction of Trump's numerous supporters help their odds? Does rejecting reality increase the chances for a better world? How did anyone think any of this was a good idea?

Perhaps the free money and labor in exchange for nothing was even more enticing than winning. And now they're poised to make even more by playing the opposition again.

How are battles of antiquity relevant here? They used shield walls and light cavalry, the US government has access to drones that can bomb you in your living room after identifying you through your Wi-Fi connection.

Where is the brilliant tactician going to emerge from? And with what resources are they going to overcome the most modern and industrialized military force in history? An insurgency has access to arms built nearly 100 years ago, the government stealth drones. They don't even need to meet you, merely find out where you are hiding and blow it up.

This isn't the 1900-1940s, governments aren't armed with slightly better guns anymore. You want a revolution? Expect it to look like the insurgencies in the middle east, hiding in holes while drones steadily pick away at everyone. There won't be tactical battles where a Napoleon-esque figure can defy the odds, it will be fighting a war of attrition in the hope that your numbers die slower than the government can replace its ammunition and popular support. You aren't beating the US military unless the military itself splits.

Its an outright fantasy that the everyman can somehow replicate the revolutions of centuries past when the sheer firepower difference these days borders on obscene. You might as well bring a letter opener to fight a machine gun.

Ukraine for example is essentially being proped up via billions of modern weaponry being sent to them to counteract the Russians. That's modern warfare, not tactical genius but firepower superiority. Unless the this brilliant mind can secure a multiple modern day stealth bombers, aircraft carriers, and drones it's basically dying for long enough that people eventually get sick of it.

Chris Hedges has predicted the u.s. collapse into christian fascism for as long as I can remember.

The only thing I question regarding Hedge's predictions is he believes we could make white men feel less despair. He believes that the disenfranchised, which apparently includes white men, leads to their despair which they then channel into support of a demagogue like DT.

He writes: "This despair has been played out on the bodies of the disenfranchised ---- especially among middle-aged white males"

I'm not convinced of this. To put it mildly. Is despair what we are seeing? Are these MAGA people "giving up with a sense of defeat, losing all hope"? (definition of despair).

It is hate that we are seeing. Hate that is inextricably linked to racism and misogyny. I know a lot of very comfortable white maga men (and women) who will always hate people of color, trans people, women ------ no matter what you give them (creature comforts/jobs).

Not sure what good any of this does (dissection of WTF is happening and why). I've always tried to understand pathologies. And if this (trumpism) is anything like being in a relationship with a malignant narcissist, the #1 thing to learn: you can't change them and it could kill you if you stay.

How do we leave this?

I wish there were, but I don't think anyone has any idea what he might attempt to actually follow through on to even attempt to define what those prospects are. The only two real policy points he's stuck to for months are universal tariffs with heavy ones for China and mass deportations. We can speculate what that will do (immediate inflation for all goods, rising construction and food costs over the long term), but what else he would do and what the ramifications are I think are still an open question. Or at least people seem wary of giving a detailed answer.

What happens next? I have no earthly idea. Will Trump's antagonizing of the military be his downfall? If so, then the USA will move even further away from anything we've know. Will Curtis Yarvin and Peter Thiel be welcomed into the White House? How long before factions in Trump's court fight amongst themselves for power and influence, JD Vance adding something special to one of Trump's Big Macs to hurry along the process of Trump ceding power to Vance?

Trump was open about autocracy. And America wants it.

Collapse-wise, 1.5 degrees was dead before, but now it's utterly buried. Put the pedal to the metal for emissions, and the impacts that will follow. The USA will deal with climate migration by walls and force, and will most likely act in the next few decades to secure resources it wants - any smug Canadians may want to read that sentence again and realize just what that will mean (and maybe start researching escape options, right behind Americans).

The thing that gets me more than anything is that I thought Harris would squeak by but not kill MAGA, and we'd have to do this over and over again until Trump 2.0 won and the game was up. There are some interesting parallels to the Roman Republic. Rome may have been a republic but after civil war and instability, the populace yearned for stability even if it came in the form of an autocrat. Augustus brought them that, making the Roman Empire, and by all accounts handled it well, keeping the illusion of the republic alive while it was an open secret he was the man in charge. Many that followed weren't so skilled as he though.

We seem to, with tears in our eyes, declare that democracy is beautiful and must be protected but many people are seeing through that illusion. We vote and nothing changes. Now in the name of stability, America have chosen their autocrat in the form of Trump, hoping he'll take the reigns, quell corruption and make their lives better. Spoiler: he won't.

This, in a nutshell, was why the Democrats lost in 2016 and now - because "winning the election" was not a priority compared with diversity and representation.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a far-left socialist, and I live in one of countries in the world with the greatest equality between the genders.

But the priority should have been "beating Trump" and nothing else. I lived in America for thirty years, before fleeing: I've never lived in a more sexist and racist place.

The worst part is this - I predicted exactly this scenario when Biden announced that the VP candidate would be a woman of color several weeks before they actually named a candidate. I said that by doing this, Biden guaranteed that no one would believe that Harris was there solely on her own merits, because Biden had already announced that this was not the case. I said that it was likely that Biden would not make it to a second term, and if so, Americans would never vote for a Black woman, because they're Americans.

However, I told very few people this, because that argument, "We need to put aside our quest for diversity in order to avoid catastrophe" would have had my Americans friends screaming at me.

The Democrats should have realized the terrible danger they and the world were in. They should have nominated some relatively young and energetic white guy as VP, even though I am so fucking sick of yet another white guy President I want to puke.

After 2016, I told Democrats that they should occupy DNC headquarters and demand answers, since the DNC refused to make any attempt to analyze what went wrong and fix it.

I was met with a wave of rage: "Now is not the time to be criticizing the Democrats, we must all stand together!" As I thought but did not say, "I've been watching US politics for almost 50 years at this point, and somehow now is never the time."

And here we are. I almost guarantee that just like in every election in the past, the Democratic Party will learn absolutely nothing from this.

A few things that strike me looking back:

Harris ran an utterly atrocious campaign. There is absolutely no way the Democratic Party can dodge full responsibility for this outcome. I never expected her to be vocal on Climate Change given how unpopular a topic it is, but there was absolutely no discussion of Main Street economics where people are hurting most. She never even attempted to speak to the average working class American. There wasn't even a primary, so we had no alternative. I would spit in her face if I could.
Trump is going to send this country back to the 1800's. He has zero political opposition whatsoever because he owns the SC, Congress and likely even the House. I know this will sound dramatic, and I understand that people are extremely upset, but unless you're willing to really put your neck on the line, I think people's best bet is to lay as low as they can. I took my daughter to see a production of "The Diary of Ann Frank" at a local school this weekend, and that was exactly my thought. And that after it was out in the open that Trump was cool with Hitler and wished his situation were more like Hitler's (he didn't get to the part of the movie when he would have found out how many times Hitler's generals tried to kill him), it still seemed to be a question who the bad guys were in World War II. It's a similar trend that helped the conservatives dominate UK politics. FPTP doesn't work when you have multiple parties, and left to centre left votes get split across them when the mainstream party is basically more of the same. In the UK, the the majority don't vote conservative, but they consistently stayed in power for ages since they'd get that 30-35% boomer vote, while the rest of the country wants more left wing policies but the vote is split amongst other parties.

This is exactly the point, and yes I was being hyperbolic, but given that humans often rationalize intuitive decisions, which are more often colored by bias than not, rather than assess a decision on as objective a basis as possible, I think inherent sexist attitudes from being raised in a patriarchal culture to see "leadership" in gendered ways is likely the underlying reason for *most* of those votes evaporating between 2020 and yesterday. The only way to really know would be for both major party candidates to run a woman in 2028 for president so we would have a similar electorate to compare it to to look at turnout numbers.

But that's not going to happen.

But it seems that even when about to step up, they still are not able to come up with a plan to move closer to an ideal society (whatever that would be) and merely replicate what paranoiac bloodthirsty tyrant leaders of the past have done to eliminate all competition and opposants. There's no plan, no vision behind that. Just hate, violence and fear.

I believe Trump when he says he doesn't know what's in it, too long a read for him. Not even trying to be sarcastic, I remember his 1 page daily reports from his last term.

It does seem the message of 'save democracy from Trump' wasn't enough to secure a Democrat victory here. Owen Jones just posted this article and I think it sums up quite nicely why more people, even if they didn't fully agree with him, eventually voted Trump.

Basically Jones travelled through some states in the US over the election and simply asked people what they thought. A lot of what he got back was simple; the democrats were pushing a vision that US is fine, everything is fine and we we need to protect it from the likes of Trump. And people were sick of it. Trump, even if it is shallow and populist language, is at least acknowledging that everything isn't fine, that people are struggling and something needs to be done.

Trump offered a return to fantastical glory days that never exited, Harris offered to keep things as they are, and things are they are are really shit for a lot of people.

If liberals idea of gaining victory is to not rock the boat, maintain the status quo and pretend everything is going great, all they're doing is marginalizing large chunks of the population that are going to turn to more extreme elements in hopes of something, anything changing. We're seeing this happening all across the world.

So they didn't learn from 2016 or 2020 where those concerns were already voiced out. They are pretty fucking hopeless. But that's what happens when it's all incestuous DC careerists bouncing from one corporate stooge to another. And yes, Biden won 2020 but that was all covid. Trump would have crushed him without it. I saw my PCP today, I’ve got some pretty significant seasonal PTSD and the election has cranked it up to 11. My NP, bless her heart and soul, hooked me up with the good meds to get me through this absolute nightmare. I’m also on day two of a right sided migraine & trigeminal nerve attack. At this point about half my body is numb or tingling from the pain, the meds, or the dissociation.

Meanwhile, in the background of my brain, I’m having flashback to watching actual Lee Greenwood singing 🎶I’m Proud To Be An American🎶 on my momma’s high school football field 30+ years ago. Why, brain, why?!

I was able to confirm that mine, and my husband’s, absentee ballots were received and counted. So that’s done. Now we wait and see how our votes for president and senate play out.

We voted for Golden vs the Republican Race car driver. I held my nose and voted, because much as I don’t love Golden, or many of his BS stands, he also represents many of my independent neighbors better than a more standard Democrat. And the Republican is just a Trumpet. Plus, this race might be what we need to get the senate back to functional.

That said, our state senate didn’t even have a dem or a third party on the ballot. Now my husband is harassing me to run next time. <.<

Meanwhile, I’m nauseated just existing during this election. I appreciate his belief in me though. I’m going to try not to hit refresh 100 times an hour on the results this evening. We’ll see how it goes.

I, a passing trans man, have not been out in most areas of life, especially work, for many years. Sometimes I have wondered if it’s overkill, maybe we are not a hop skip and jump from camps and gas chambers. Here I am, chicken little, once again.

I get it, whoever wins we are all supremely fucked. But let us not pretend we are all fucked in the same way. Should Trump win tomorrow, I will double down on stashing hormones, consider options for relocating to blue states or progressive countries, and continue not telling anyone I don’t absolutely trust that I am trans. It won’t protect me forever but it may give something of a head start.

In 1968 the Democratic party of FDR fractured over civil rights.

White Southern Democrats who were racist fuckheads, wanted the Democrats to "roll back" LBJ's Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. They might have voted for Bobby Kennedy though.

Then Kennedy got assassinated.

At the Convention, the party gave the nomination to the FDR stalwart Humphrey. The Progressives wanted "Clean Gene" so they stayed home in a snit. George Wallace started the American Independent Party.

In 1968 Wallace got 13.5% of the vote. He CARRIED the South on a platform of "returning to segregation. In 1972, after Wallace was paralyzed in an assassination attempt those White Southern Racist voters broke for Nixon.

The Republicans DOMINATED American politics from 1972 to 2012. They controlled the country 28 out of 40 years. If it hadn't been for Watergate and Ross Perot they would have had a "clean sweep".

FYI- Clinton didn't win a MAJORITY either time. He won a PLURALITY of the vote in 92' and 96'. Ross Perot split the Republican vote and no one got above 50%. Clinton won by getting the MOST votes, not half the votes.

I voted for McGovern in 1972. He wanted to end the War, start a Universal Basic Income program, free tuition for college, a federal healthcare program, etc.

After the debacle in 1968 the Democratic Party was reformed to reduce the power of the party officials (the Machine). Primaries were emphasized for their more transparent, open nature. The Progressives used the concessions they got after 68' to make a playing field that a Progressive Democrat could have a chance on.

Young Progressives insisted that the country wanted a “Real Change”.

They worked hard and swamped the expanded state primaries. They got the candidate of their choice. They got George McGovern. McGovern was definitely a “change” candidate.

#Nixon won the election, with a 23.2% margin of victory in the popular vote.

The fourth largest percentage margin in presidential election history. He received almost 18 million more popular votes than McGovern. The widest margin in the number of voters in ANY U.S. presidential election.

In 1972, a whole generation of young WHITE voters rejected the FDR Democratic party allegiance of their parents and grandparents and became Republicans.

The Republicans DOMINATED the American political agenda for the next 40 years.

That's what "betting the farm" gets you.

Your political analysis is interesting, but I believe you are missing my point. The outcome will be what it will be. There is no bright future regardless. If you are reading this I assume you are at least starting to come to terms with that reality. Sure there is a degree of reprieve under Democratic leadership, and I personally voted accordingly. Some of us will have to consider immediate and present concern should the Republican Party win majority control at this time. And a large part of the problem is defending queer and trans people is not a fundamental priority for the Democrats, we absolutely will be sidelined.

We are maybe 1% of the population. On the outside there are a couple dozen transgender children across the country trying to play soccer or basketball without being harassed. Over $200 million were spent on anti-trans attack ads in this election cycle. As it turns out it’s a very effective wedge issue, and while I expect push back from the democrats if they fall into minority control around a number of issues, this is not one of them.

My advice to trans and gender non-conforming folks is to become as self-sufficient as you can in needed healthcare, know who you can trust, and start making plans for where you will go if your current location becomes unsafe. I’m honestly just bored with the idea that our way out of this is “coalition building”. How about we get real and start living from where we actually are.

At first, sterilization programs targeted white men. By the 1920's this expanded to affect the same number of women as men. The laws used broad and ever-changing disability labels like “feeblemindedness” and “mental defective.”

The United States was an international leader in eugenics. Its sterilization laws actually informed Nazi Germany. The Third Reich’s 1933 “Law for the Prevention of Offspring with Hereditary Diseases”was modeled on laws in Indiana and California. Under this law, theNazis sterilized approximately 400,000 children and adults, mostly Jews and other “undesirables,” labeled “defective.”

In 1927 the issue made its way to the Supreme Court.

A 1927 Supreme Court ruling upheld these laws. InBuck v Bell, a case of an institutionalized woman who had given birth to an illegitimate child, the court ruled that forced sterilization was constitutional under certain circumstances. Justice Holmes’ opinion read:

His sentencing was delayed in the 'porn star payout' case in NY. He was already found guilty. The judge was not a maga nut, and could easily jail him for it. Sentencing is scheduled for November 26th. He certainly can give that sentence, and the state of New York would likely enact it. This is the the 'interesting' bit. He is still president if jailed, and yes, that stacked supreme court will make a new precedent to let him out im sure (let him pardon himself). The process of that is the 'interesting' part. Does anyone overtly break the law to please him? Does he go in and out? Does he try to use federal agencies to protect himself, and how do they react?

It's not a seat I'd be comfortable to be in as either a federal Marshall, FBI agent, Secret service agent, or the judge in question.

You are entitled to your feelings and I’m certainly no fan of Harris either. We are both on the collapse subreddit after all. But Trump explicitly intends to strip rights for transgender people at a national level, and that does change things for me and my loved ones. I’m glad it doesn’t change anything for you, and I’m horrified at where this country and this world is heading either way.

Well, look at Vermont. The fact that it is rural has been the state’s gold rush for the past century. People from all over flock there every autumn to see fall foliage, so much so that it has become a problem for the locals. Vermonters are aware of this and therefore have stricter environment policies. Massachusetts, Maine and NH are somewhat like this too, except NH doesn’t pay you to recycle I don’t think. West Virginia and Vermont are so geographically similar yet are on the opposite ends of the political spectrum — my speculation is that malnutrition and lack of education have something to do with that.

Ok but as you noted, in the case of Vermont, all that beautiful nature has also been providing tourism income and the concern was that too much of that tourism was a problem for the locals — not for nature itself. There was probably way more unrecognized ecological damage done before it became bothersome to the locals. I think it also makes a difference that Vermont is a much smaller state, so their perception of the nature that “belongs to them” is less of an illusion of abundance, and the exploitation that they found problematic they could attribute mostly to outsiders.

I've been saying this all for MONTHS but nobody believed me until now. Key factors in the 2024 US election:

* The failure of Joe Biden to keep his campaign promises, particularly to young voters ($15 min wage, free community college, etc). Biden was elected partly on this promise of his superior political connections and years of DC know-how enabling him to get legislation passed, when that hasn't really materialized even during a government trifecta.

* The failure of the Biden Administration to adequately stem inflation and fend off price gouging and generally reduce the cost of inflation relative to actual, real earned wages particularly at the bottom end of the job market. Desperate people make desperate voting choices, if fascism is a seed then poor, desperate voters are the soil in which it is most gainfully planted.

* The failure of the US justice system to properly hold accountable Donald J Trump and his associates for his election crimes in 2020.

* The decision to run a WILDLY unpopular, (perceived black) Indian-Jamaican woman in a country with a deeply engrained culture of racism and sexism in its electorate, who also had a background that alienates her from minorities (pro-cop prosecutor). This sucks to say but: A white male is still the safe political bet in the US.

* The failure of Biden and the DNC to acknowledge his age related decline in cognition in time to effectively swap a new candidate. Joe Biden should NEVER have been the candidate. He should have kept to a 1 term presidency as he planned. In addition to completely fucking over any election planning the DNC may have had, alot of voters felt lied to and like they had been robbed of their choice and had 2020s first dropout candidate forced on them.

* The alienation of young voters in general, particularly young white men. Not just the alienation to of them but the outright hostility to them in general left wing culture that has caused GenZ men to swing pretty far to the right compared to millennial males. Failure to do anything to alieviate the housing crisis also harmed their performance in this demographic, as alot of young voters are wondering how they will ever afford a house.

* A constant over focus on social issues such as gay marriage, abortion, etc when people are being crushed by record inflation, record cost of living, and other "immediate" needs. Immediate needs are things like food, housing, etc. They will always take priority over mid to long term needs and concerns.

* Alienation of key groups of immigrant citizens and true leftists for the DNCs continued support of the genocide in Gaza.

Somethings to keep in mind:

* Left wing voters dont need to flip for Trump to aid Trump, they just need to note vote and they help trump.

* Trump doesn't need to offer a viable or better solution. Biden just needs to be ineffective enough on an issue that people vote for "something different" out of desperation.

Hydraulic fracking doesn't only result in natural gas, it also results in the recuperation of crude oil (half of US crude oil production comes from fracking). It also produces propane, butane, and natural gas condensates. All these can be processed and refined similarly to crude oil and is used to produce fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Here’s the thing. No politician is ever going to be perfect in every issue. But there’s a stark difference between the two options this year.

Elections come in basically two flavors, “Sea Change” and “Turnout”.

Sea Change elections are rare. They almost never happen. Because they are the social equivalent of a “Road to Damascus” conversion moment.

Turnout Elections are what we usually have.

They are about “who shows up”, and “who stays home”. That sounds obvious, but the difference between those two things is highly significant.

If people aren’t showing up because voting is difficult, you can do something about it. You can increase turnout.

If people are staying home and deliberately not voting, they are sending you a message. They are punishing you.

Let me give you an historical example to illustrate the difference between a sea change and a turnout election.

1968 was a TURNOUT election. 1972 was a SEA CHANGE election.

1968 was a TURNOUT election. Even with the openly racist George Wallace peeling off 13.5% of the WHITE Southern vote, Nixon won the popular vote by only one point. Young Progressive Democrats didn’t turn out for Humphrey and it was enough to give Nixon a narrow victory.

Nixon won the election, with a 23.2% margin of victory in the popular vote. The fourth largest percentage margin in presidential election history. He received almost 18 million more popular votes than McGovern. The widest margin in the number of voters in ANY U.S. presidential election.

In 1972, a whole generation of young WHITE voters rejected the FDR Democratic party allegiance of their parents and grandparents and became Republicans. 1972 was a SEA CHANGE election.

The consequences of this realignment were profound.

Between 1968 and 2008, the Republicans held the Presidency 28 out of 40 years. If it had not been for Watergate and Ross Perot, they would have had a clean sweep.

Sea Change elections are consequential.

2022 was a Sea Change Election. The Republican Party is Doomed.

The Supreme Court doomed the Republican party with the Dobbs decision. The graph above shows you why.

Women 18–29 voted Democratic by a 73% margin.

Women 30–44 voted Democratic by a 57% margin.

In 20 years, those women will be the dominant political force in America. This graph tells you they will most emphatically, NOT be voting Republican.

Abortion REALLY MATTERED politically. This is true cost of Dobbs to the Republicans.

The Supreme Court “gut-shot” the Republican party’s future with Dobbs. No matter what they win now, they are bleeding out.

I care who wins! Thanks for mentioning PTSD. I think a lot of people are suffering from CPTSD that has been going on for decades in this country. It is one crisis after another and absolutely NO time for healing or, in most cases, acknowledgment/understanding of what the crisis was (is).

This is a massive dismissal of normal reactions to an insane POTUS election! This is a normalization of this felon/rapist/racist as a candidate. There was NO mention of this being the first convicted felon that is running for POTUS.

A healthier discussion would be to call out how sick and traumatizing this election is especially when it comes to Donald Trump/Maga/project 2025. FFS, this is what mental health professionals are saying:

I have relatives in the US whom I pity, given the options they are faced with, but as I'm not voting myself since I'm Norwegian. If I had I would have voted for a third party no matter what state I was in, because genocide is so far beyond the pale of what is permissible within democratic politics.

I'm not convinced that a leftist movement in the US will be stronger under Harris than under Trump. Believing that a Harris administration will allow any political movement that threatens the duopoly is, in my opinion, dangerously naive. Their repression will be shrouded in more polite rhetoric than what a Trump administration might enact, but the US has been building a formidable apparatus for political repression for decades, especially since 2001. And both can claim it is necessary for national security.

With regards to the genocide on the Palestinians, in Norway we have had an organised effort through Palestinakomiteen (The Palestine Committee) since 1970 and which I'm supporting, both financially and through participation. There's also an organised effort at the university I work at, which have largely been successful in their demands, with one remaining demand to cease cooperation with the Kongsberg Group (the major Norwegian weapons manufacturer).

More personally, aside from generally boycotting companies connected to Israel, I've also elected to decline a professional invitation from Germany, a country I'm not planning to set foot in until we have an international tribunal going. The same goes for the UK, and other countries complicit in aiding and defending Israel. I'm going to do what I can within my power, however limited it is.

And I'm not going to relent on this, for me there's no return to normalcy with any of these political entities outside of fully fledged trials in the Hague, not only for the responsible elected officials, soldiers and public servants in Israel, but also people like Scholz, Sunak and Starmer. I'm not demanding certain sentences for these people, but they have to be tried according to international law.

The funny aspect of this all is that republican's have actually had a better climate-action record, because they're so bad at governing and fiscal policy that they crash the world economy every couple of terms, and that has a very significant impact on production and emissions. Liberals have been seemingly tamping down on the rate of increase, but conservatives fuck things so badly they reverse the slope, at least until they get voted out and trigger massive public spending to recover (oh the irony).

Trump's economic policies and those of people in his orbit are legitimately idiotic, from an economist or business perspective. They will fuck the economy into the earth. Musk wants to cut like a third of public spending. That would destroy the American economy if they actually did that, probably permanently.

If neoliberalism is sickness, then eco-socialism is medicine, and fascism is the guy whose like "I'm going to try taking your blood out with this grenade, maybe that will work". Well, the reason why Biden, Obama and especially Bush were able to build more of the border wall than Trump is because the policy was very bipartisan. Trump made it his big issue and thus the Dems opposed it, making it harder for Trump to actually do it. We might see similar things happen if Trump wins again, making it harder for him to do bad stuff that Harris also plans on doing.

The problem is that Trump is even lazier and less interested in governing now, so the ghouls around him will just run things for him. So I don't really see much of an advantage in either side winning. Republicans would probably be better off long term if Trump is just gone.

First it's technology will fix everything, then technology will fix most things, then well technology will let us adapt to the new conditions, then it's constant losing confidence in even that the more you come to terms with the true nature of people. Then you realize the actual scope of the problem.

Running out of fresh water rapidly, warming of the water, ice melting and not only increasing sea levels but desalinating the water which ruins things like the AMOC, excessive dumping of carbon into atmosphere, most of the world trying to develop into developed nations like we are and thus living lifestyles that there just aren't resources for (Wait till 1B+ Indians want the same lifestyles as American's), collapsing ecosystems with mass extinctions everyday (only 4% of all mammals on earth are wild), the diet of the planet is shifting to eating more unsustainable ways like meat which create need for more deforestation and more animal agriculture, the malicious burning of the rainforests for profit, feedback loops such as warmer world means more forest fire and melting ice which will release insane amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which will speed things up even more and one billion other things I can say.

Think about the sea getting warmer, that will not only kill creatures living in the sea (Which most coastal nations rely upon for food and money) but the sea becomes more murky which creates more bacteria and disease...Just use your own memory! We live in a world when covid-19 was hitting and we didn't know exactly how it was, a buffoon who is currently re-running for office was saying how it was just going to all magically disappear...Our response to an actual threat was complete failure let alone an existential "invisible" threat. Not to mention TV shows like Star Trek which came out 1966 already predicted remarkably a lot of technology we use today. For example they didn't quite predict the mobile phone but they did essentially predict it's older brother the tablet. Basically a bigger phone which you can do everything you said.

In many ways we've under-preformed if you want to be really pessimistic. That's not to discount the amazing technology we DO have like graphics cards, processors, camera lens, telescopes, GPS, cloud computing and other technological marvels...But they've come with great cost and while many of these technologies have made our life more convenient they haven't made our lives truly better or more sustainable (Though things like cars and home tech becoming more energy efficient has been a great thing for sustainability), just easier.

Yeah you can have this very conversation with someone quite far from where you currently are like we us but, as I'm sure you are aware, that actually hasn't helped a lot of us communicate any better than before. If anything communicating has become so easy that it's become harder because now you don't know who you are talking too, the factors that make up their life and opinion, if they an influencer peddling misinformation, a company astroturfing a movement to make their product more popular, actually AI and you are talking to a robot...Basically that little TV in the pocket has actually helped unintentionally contribute to the decay of society in overwhelming ways! Disinformation alone has become worse and worse. Most people don't even acknowledge there is a climate issue to begin with for example thanks to it.

Taken in isolation these technologies are amazing and sure you can't predict the future with 100% accuracy but all I can say is I genuinely believe that these technologies are making the world worse ironically, that every metric that matters to survival is WAY DOWN, most people still think a magical tech solution will fix everything (Even though they could have already with moderation but choose not too), that if everyone in the world was to consume resources like Americans or Europeans there is literally not enough resources on earth to sustain that growth in lifestlye or that just because some of us might survive on Mars because we flied this planet that it is a good thing...I could go on and on and on but essentially you read the writing on the walls...You have to make come conclusions based on actual evidence and observation and they are all trending one way, down.

But by all means, I pray for the solution that will fix everything and let us keep living completely disconnected from reality lives but time is running out or has ran out and we are still currently only beginning discussions as a civilization to perhaps invest in a little carbon capture technology...Yeah let's see how that goes...

Pennsylvanian checking in. I probably care less about the election results than many people, as the US is going downhill fast or slow. (I voted for slow!)

What I am worried about is if Trump claims he won Pennsylvania tonight, but then it comes out tomorrow that he actually lost. This would be similar to 2020 because they are not allowed to count mail-in votes before today and will be counting votes at least until 3am tomorrow. Don't expect to have results for Pennsylvania tonight.

If that happens there might be a lot of unrest here. Im worried aboit armed militias running amok, although i think that would be shut down fairlu quickly. My biggest worry is that conservative legislature here tries to mess with the votes or change the outcome of the election. If that happens then I'm gonna have to go out and protest. I don't want to do that but I will fight for my vote to count if anyone threatens it.

I'm going to go ahead and make a controversial statement, but I promise it's not designed to be trolling/baiting.

I don't think anything is going to happen out of the ordinary. Ordinary, in this instance, will be limited to:

- tweets complaining the election was stolen

- social media posts of an unhinged nature that are not backed by action

- journalists and media pundits going on fierce diatribes for their respective teams

I think, in general, this election was lost in the Summer. Democrats adopted the tactics typically ushered by Republicans, a.k.a. "Be afraid of _________" and it, to me, was a symbolic death of democracy. The old famous quote by Ben Franklin has never rang more true:

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin

America is afraid. It has been afraid for awhile, but 2024 is the first time I've ever seen America so terrified of the future. We have 2 of the most unlikeable candidates in the history of the country in front of us, and we're being asked to vote for one of these two dipshits.

We saw this tactic after 9/11, where we were warned about imminent nuclear weapons. We saw it during the red scare and the Cuban missile crisis, and we're seeing it now in the 2024 American Presidential election.

Ultimately, I think everyone fell for it. We were asked to ignore all the real problems surrounding the country. Inflation. Immigration. Deteriorating social protections. Equality. Justice. Representation. We were told if we didn't put on the blinders, and focus exclusively on being afraid about what might happen next, that all of our lives were doomed. The end result is an atmosphere of fear, of tension, of worry.... and for what. Nothing.

Well. We'll see. I don't care who wins; neither candidate is going to address any of these problems. But I hope this year goes down as the year that America showed the entire world how absolutely terrified of... anything..... that America has become. Maybe we will actually get that revolutionary moment from all of this, but tbh, I doubt it. The powers that be stole influence, power, and wealth in untold proportions while the average American was worried about their quality of life getting worse. Deja vu, IMO, of what always happens when fear is in the driver's seat.

You are correct in that the United States has definite real problems (as does every country in the world). But it's not up to any one person (the president) to fix them - it's up to all of us.

And I totally disagree with the fact that you're equating the two candidates ("two of the most unlikeable candidates", "two dipshits"). I would suggest that if you don't see any difference between them, you haven't been looking very hard.

Kamala Harris is a neoliberal husk. "Conservatism" is really the only thing I don't like about this quote since it will immediately trigger many people. In the context of his statement though, "conservatism" applies to both the Democratic and Republican parties: both choose in-groups and out-groups, both bind some more than others, etc. Both are pro-corporate pro-rich eat-the-poor.

Donald Trump is the ultimate extreme version of Wilhoit's quote expressed psychologically. It is absolutely no wonder that Elon threw in with Trump- they are both the same in that insular hierarchical mechanisms created them psychologically.

As many around the globe wait to watch the results of the American election please know that the working American class has very little input. This will be a battle between the wealthy elite .

The US is an oligarchy masquerading as a democracy.

The US does not have a one person, one vote system. The Electoral College system in America undermines the democratic ideal of equal representation.

In most states, the candidate who wins the majority of the popular vote receives all of the state’s electoral votes. This system has resulted in scenarios where the overall popular vote winner nationwide does not win the presidency. It has happened five times in U.S. history, including in 2000 and 2016. When Trump was elected into office it was by the electoral college not by the majority of Americans.

Smaller states have a disproportionately larger influence compared to larger states. For example, a state like Wyoming, with a small population, has three electoral votes, which translates to a higher representation per capita than larger states like California. This means voters in smaller states have more electoral power per person than those in larger states.

Electors are expected to vote according to their state's popular vote, but there have been instances of "faithless electors" who vote differently. This introduces an element of unpredictability and undermines the direct choice of the voters.

Presidential campaigns tend to focus on a handful of "swing states" that are not reliably Democratic or Republican. As a result, the interests of voters in non-swing states may be overlooked, reducing nationwide voter engagement and making many voters feel that their vote doesn't count.

Many Americans feel like their vote does not count therefore do not participate in elections. The large state of Texas has the second highest number of electoral votes and it is considered to be a non-voting state as voter turnout is dismal. It's harder to vote in Texas than in any other state due to the policies and restrictions one party has put into place. One of the most recent voter restrictions is a form of photo Identification which are not free. A gun license is an acceptable form of photo ID but not a student ID.

Large global corporations own America and its wage slaves. They own the political system and the people. The gaslighting of Freedom is real and starts at an early age. Extreme wealth inequality exists and the US operates as an oligarchy dominated by these large corporations and a few wealthy elites. The fossil fuel industry infiltrated The schools and brainwashed children..

They are able to keep their wage slaves ignorant as the location of the county helps keep them isolated. The average number of paid vacation days for private sector employees is 11 days per year after one year of service.

I want to apologize to most of the rest of the world on behalf of a large chunk of Americans. But I don't think Americans are uniquely dumb or gullible or anything like that. It's just that it's the most obvious place for bad actors to intensely target their disinformation campaigns.

Maybe it doesn't matter a lot given that humanity has been playing Fuck Around and is likely nearing the Find Out stage of that equation, but today's election is about whether the most powerful nation on earth will at least try to lead the world in the general direction of solutions to innumerable problems or whether they will be guaranteed to at best do absolutely fucking nothing and worst help speed run the collapse.

One could say I've lost a lot of friendships over this shit, but one could also say that those friendships depended on me not knowing something important about the character of people I thought for sure were my friends. It hurt a little, but that's nothing compared to, well, Planet Earth and our future on it.

Honestly, were it not for the vast, *vast* efforts placed on spreading disinformation in the US, I don't think this would be anywhere close. But for those Americans who found their way down deep into the disinformation rabbit hole, it becomes increasingly challenging for them to see outside of it - ultimately resulting in....this.

Even after this election is over, it will take years of deprogramming to get people back to reality (assuming the election goes as hoped). This election is just the start of what will hopefully be a strong healing process for the country, and for its constituents. If Russia happens to collapse in the next year, that will also drastically help the process - with no more endless floods of targeted disinfo.

That seems like quite a stretch, this election will undoubtedly have a substantial material effect on Americans' quality of life in the short-term but it's completely irrelevant in terms of correcting course on ecological overshoot and preventing effective global industrial collapse by the end of the century. Considering how poorly the next four years are going to go from a global climate perspective alone, I'd be pretty confident putting down a large sum of money on the party that loses this election to win the next one by a substantial margin.

Same here. I live in a blue state BUT in a small mountain town that’s traditionally red. I was happily shocked to see massive “Harris/Walz” banners by some of the nearby farms and what not. I have a “Vets against Trump” decal on my vehicle that has caused a few “road rage” incidents for myself (someone did a “training time out” T and kept pretending like they were gonna hit me…jokes on them I have dash cams) but honestly? I’m seeing more blue than I’d ever expect here. I’m still nervous, though.

In the short term, a Democratic loss in November is likely to yield a more peaceful transition. But, in the longer term, we’ll probably see more violence under a Trump Presidency, especially if he uses the office to favor white Americans. Nonwhites are projected to represent a majority of Americans by 2044, and they will not remain silent should they become excluded from power. A response from the left might start, for example, with mass protests around the country. Whether this escalates to violence will depend on how Trump responds; one of the fastest ways to radicalize a population is to answer peaceful protests with force. This is what happened with the Basques in Spain, the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War, and Syrians during the Arab Spring. Trump has shown every indication of advocating for a heavy-handed military response.

The "best" place on reddit will inevitably be /r/politics but considering it's not even 1030am as I write this.... It will be hours before you see any reliable info.

There will almost certainly be live threads once polls start to close but honestly you don't need that kind of stress. If you cast your vote, you did your part and there's nothing else you can do (other than helping others get to their own polling place if that's your jam). Constantly refreshing the pages or reading the comments won't change the outcome and to be honest we won't really know the final outcome for a week or more.

...I just haven't seen it. There's a lot of Harris/Walz signs in my traditionally fairly red precinct and the only Trump displays I'm really seeing are the over the top ones that have been around since 2020 anyway. Maybe a few extra signs pop up here and there but it seems not nearly the volume it was in 2016 and 2020, but also where they are concentrated to the same few properties.

When I travel across the state of Nevada and rural Northern-Central California, I will readily report the same.

KAMALA HARRIS STOLE MY VOTE THIS MORNING!

I was standing in line with my ballot getting ready to put it in the machine when she jumped out from behind a curtain where she had been hiding and snatched it right out of my hand!

I chased her all around the room but couldn't catch her. She kept running in circles around the voting machines and jumping over the tables where people fill their ballots out all the while saying "YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO GAY MARRY AND HAVE AN ABORTION NOW" and doing that hideous laugh of hers.

And to top it all off, then the Haitians in the voting line started throwing dead cats at me!
