Saw this on YouTube today, guy bought it from the Rudi Klein auction and is planing on shipping it to New Zealand to do a budget restoration.. Thoughts? https://youtube.com/shorts/sruox2D4sFk?feature=shared
splatter_spree@reddit
I hope you paid almost nothing for that.
Just from experience I can see you spending 30-40k just to make that look like a car again.
Royal-External9989@reddit (OP)
It was around 2k USD I believe
Time_Might_1742@reddit
That looks like too much time and money jajaja
Kingken130@reddit
r/battlecar go full mad max on that

I’m interested in seeing a Porsche rat rod.
killerwhaleorcacat@reddit
These can be really cheap and easy.
Royal-External9989@reddit (OP)
I hope you’re right..
killerwhaleorcacat@reddit
I know I am. I just saw another guys budget 912 a little bit ago. Take a few pics, spray foam, chicken wire, bondo, jb weld, tractor paint… it’ll be a fucking show car in no time.
Very-Confused-Walrus@reddit
All you need is some Sheet metal and a dream big guy

💯

Purchasing a junked car and having it shipped to New Zealand doesn’t scream budget to me. New Zealand isn’t famous for parts availability and affordability, either.
A friend of mine had an off-road rig years ago that he called a budget build because he only spent around $10K total on it. The thing is, he had upwards of $30K in parts on it that he traded services for or was given. I wouldn’t consider that a budget build, but it just goes to show that one person’s definition may differ from another’s.
IknowwhatIhave@reddit
I think it's all relative. People pay Tuthill or Singer $1mm plus for 911 builds so if this guy spends less than $100k it could be called a "budget restoration."
GadreelsSword@reddit
Beginner project!
UsedState7381@reddit
It ain't going to be a "budget" restauration.
pogoturtle@reddit
Why wouldn't it be? Just use used parts and do all the labor. Just because it's a Porsche doesn't mean it's expensive
musubk@reddit
The amount of used parts you need here, it'll be cheaper to buy a parts car. And if your parts car has all the parts this thing needs, it's in a better starting point to work from.
UsedState7381@reddit
LOL good luck with that.
pogoturtle@reddit
Again why wouldn't it be? Op already said it's going to be a mad Max build. Sounds to me like it's truly budget.
classless_classic@reddit
Ok. Why don’t you start pricing things out for us with links to the parts/prices you found them at.
What do you consider “budget”?
pogoturtle@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/projectcar/s/NgOTVEu7nj
Literally 25k in parts. Op also gives suggestions to help you bring the price down.
Yes it could be a $100k car. But you don't have to build it as a 100k car to be happy.
musubk@reddit
Are we calling $25k in parts alone a 'budget' rebuild here? I own three project cars and they don't add up to that much combined.
classless_classic@reddit
LOL. That thing is in WAY better shape to start with. Had way more usable parts.
Keep trying to justify your stupid comment though.
You still never answered what you consider a “budget” build.
pogoturtle@reddit
I mean it's just a few but haven't seen anything crazy. It's doable.
classless_classic@reddit
Only a few hundred left to source.
Don’t forget paint for $5-20k
pogoturtle@reddit
It's a budget build bruh. Spray can it.

Used parts for what? A 30-40 year old porshe? Used body panels for my '94 integra are getting expensive and I don't even wanna know how much it is for a porshe
flibbidygibbit@reddit
A 912 is going to be 50+ years old. It looks like a 911 but has a much smaller engine. It's an economy car with style.
Drunken_Sailor_70@reddit
I have a friend with a 912. He says it's like a 911 but without all that pesky horsepower.
I_divided_by_0-@reddit
My NA 944 needs $5000 worth of parts
LokiDesigns@reddit
So it needs an alternator?
I_divided_by_0-@reddit
Valve stems.
nasalgoat@reddit
Hahahaha!
Dude! Have you seen the prices of Porsche parts? Everything is expensive on these. You pay either in fab time and materials to make it from scratch or pay the Porsche tax.
AngryScottish@reddit
I see you have never worked on a Porsche before.
The only "cheap" Porsche is the 914 or SUVs, otherwise, parts for them are all expensive -- even used.
Royal-External9989@reddit (OP)
I hope it is tbh, seeing a “mad max” style shitbox 912 coming down the road would be kinda rad
Dieselpump510@reddit
Safari Porsche is where these are at. 👍🏻
flibbidygibbit@reddit
Subaru swap, much less expensive than a real air cooled engine
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
Then you have Subaru issues, which will be expensive after a few swaps and time to do it.
JediMineTrix@reddit
Not if you do an H6 instead of an H4
Ghia149@reddit

At least there won’t be any tire kickers..
Tomcat115@reddit
Can’t have tire kickers if you don’t have tires!
Catatafish@reddit
Mad max build. Off road tires, lift kit, rusty bullbar up front, no door just a cage, exhaust coming out above the rear wheels.
Would be 10/10 /r/battlecars
SilverbackIdiot@reddit
I like how “shipping it to NZ” and “budget” is said in the same sentence.
Competitive_Car7413@reddit
Hopefully he's already engaging with the relevant government departments on this one, as with no paperwork, no history, and likely a fair bit of structural work needed, its going to be a heck of a job getting it road legal here in NZ (unless of course its going to be a dedicated track car or something). At least it appears to still have its body tags, which is good. I look forward to his progress.
ExpertFault@reddit
First you have to build the budget
E8282@reddit
It could absolutely be a budget build if he doesn’t plan on doing anything OEM outside of the body…
bigfatfun@reddit
That’s gonna be a big budget
Drunken_Sailor_70@reddit
Big budget is still a budget
ddwood87@reddit
Complete donors are expensive.
HarlanCulpepper@reddit
A donor for a shell that has already been a donor. It's the circle of life.
ddwood87@reddit
The gas cap could prob go on the donor and call it restored.
pistonsoffury@reddit
I concur that this project will indeed have a budget.
CavillOfRivia@reddit
I mean if the budget is 50k and you do it for 45k its still a budget build, right?
AZeddie19@reddit
If it's in Arizona; A/C blows Cold
RovDer@reddit
At that point it would turn into a Mad Max build, assuming there isn’t an engine and trans probably a junkyard LS swap.
MunchamaSnatch@reddit
Good candidate for a cyberpunk build, rat rod, or One-off track car, but having restored a few cars, I'd never touch this with restoration in mind.

I'd dump it on a Wrangler frame as is, and send it.
crystalgrey@reddit
It's a long and expensive road to build a Porsche. I love all cars, but Porsche is where my heart is. As long as you are realistic about what the cost is going to be, you can do it without being discouraged. A turnkey GM crate engine with 450hp will be about $11k. A Porsche 3.0 crankshaft (new) is currently about $14k. In the end, the Porsche will have a higher return if you ever sell it. You just have to know what you are getting into.
nasalgoat@reddit
It's crazy how a 3.0 SC engine of unknown mileage covered in dirt with 2 broken head studs is $20K and for that money you can get a fully no-holds-barred fresh LS build.
Porsche tax is nuts.
BlaquKnite@reddit
"budget" yea, ok
miks595@reddit
It's a build, that's for sure :)

MeowMeNot@reddit
The prices that some of those Rudi Klein auction cars went for were insane.
cat_of_danzig@reddit
You could do a Drew Hafner on it. TBH, if I could have any 91X in the world, I'd take his. Even above a Singer.
Only_Jury_8448@reddit
If and that's a really, really big if, it's not really rusted out, there's actually quite a bit of meat on that bone.
Honest_Tomatillo_152@reddit
Just needs one of everything! Then it will be awesome!
mclms1@reddit
Somebody will buy that if the paperwork is good .
404-skill_not_found@reddit
It’ll be beautiful when it’s finished. Personally, I avoid everything projects. Shagging every bit wears me out.
Onthecrosshairs@reddit
If you have the time and money....get to it. Just plan on it taking a lot of each.
Royal-External9989@reddit (OP)
Agree, looking forward to seeing how it goes
