I took out someone’s mirror while backing into a spot
AGuyWithTwoThighs@reddit
You're good, don't sweat it. A mirror shouldn't be an issue at all
oasuke@reddit
I was at Millis Transfer and broke my hood mirror once, side mirror twice, scratched tractor and had to call a tow for getting stuck before getting fired. that was 5 years ago. shit happens, especially when you're new. its not the end of the world.
buddas_slacky@reddit
Depends on company, western express will let you flip a truck and continue to let you work for them, Schneider will fire you for sneezing while driving.
Adventurous-Koala-36@reddit
Nah Schneider won’t fire you for something that petty lmao. I Knew a chick who bent a wheel and caused her tire to get flat one week and the next week she ended up getting into a fender bender at a truck stop and she still was there. But the next week she got caught leaving a terminal with her headset on and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Sad thing is she was only there for a month or so and came from western express and had no prior incidents in her 4 months there lol.
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
OP is a Canadian (Quebec) driver. The labor laws are much stronger up here, and while yes he could be let go, he would get a couple weeks of pay in severance and be entitled to unemployment insurance for up to a year.
Emotional-Concept-32@reddit
I've been fired for wrecking shit. I live in Alberta. No severance, just "bye Felicia".
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
I said Canada, not Northern Alabama.
Emotional-Concept-32@reddit
Better than "libby land" (Ontario, BC, Quebec), yuck!!
Prankishmanx21@reddit
Obviously not if you got fucked like that.
Temporary_Income6098@reddit
Seems fairly accurate……I was fired from Western Express for the language occasionally used when messaging my drivers manager but turned in a truck missing the passenger side glass and passenger seat also needing a new windshield and put the trailer out of service indefinitely due to a bent steel crossbar with no questions asked
Unique-Ad-2544@reddit
Dude i work for schneider and a few years ago yeah it was super strict but now a days its so bad its swift 2.0 i know guys who REGULARLY have accidents and are still here.
thesunking93@reddit
That's because Schneider keeps hitting drivers with "preventables" thus limiting your opportunities to seek employment elsewhere with those points on your DAC so you rough it at Schneider 😵💫
Nero-Danteson@reddit
Or make you take a sleep apnea test.
GumbysDonkey@reddit
You got fired for a mirror? What else have you done? Fess up.
Naive-Ad-4611@reddit (OP)
No my first time having anything bad happen
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
Are they nosed in?
There's a lot of shit happens in trucking.
Nobody was injured, ultimately it's about $1,000 maybe $1,500 claim, the other driver will probably claim some delay compensation as well depending on how your company plays ball.
If they're nosed in, that's on your blind side. That's a spot even as an experienced driver I probably would have passed up, or if they're awake I would have folded in their mirror.
Make sure you mention that you GOAL, identified it as a risk backing in, however you're new and an experience plus an unfamiliar situation cause this unfortunate outcome.
You will learn from this and strive to not cause any further backing damages going forward.
GoosieRS@reddit
I live in Quebec and did my training here so all french. What does GOAL mean? Is it Get Out And Look? Im guessing thats what it is lol
SupaDupaSweaty@reddit
Get Off your Ass Lazy fuck
deafening_silence33@reddit
Sors et regarde
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
Yes get out and look.
GoosieRS@reddit
Alr thanks!
Naive-Ad-4611@reddit (OP)
Yeah he was nose in and it was the last spot I was good on my left and it was tight and adjusted last minute.
RyuKirito@reddit
I’m so tired of lazy people nosing in. wtf are they thinking?
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Depends on situation. If its a spot that's easy to back out of, I'll nosing in so my apu isn't right next to someone's sleeper, especially if they have windows open.
There's also people with opti idle and batteries that barely hold charge, people who keep purging air nonstop every few second, etc.
RyuKirito@reddit
I couldn’t care less about anyone else sleeping. I sleep like a damn baby in adverse conditions. 🤣
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Yeah but its different if my exhaust enters your truck.
get_tae_fuck@reddit
You know, I’ve been driving for six years and have parked in some tighter than fish snatch spots yet I’ve never thought to fold my mirrors in before going to bed
def4realz@reddit
Naw you’re good. I broke an $80,000 hitch while docking with a paving truck once and wasn’t fired. I also clipped a bridge with my tarp, fully deployed on a heavy truck. If you’re good 97% of the time you can usually slide on most shit.
queentracy62@reddit
So, someone took out your mirror while you were asleep/showering/inside eating. Or tell the truth. Things happen.
D-Ray1469@reddit
I tagged a 100k BMW SUV on a car hauler trying to avoid an idiot speeding through a parking lot. Still employed, nothing was really ever said. Companies have shops and insurance for a reason.
Prankishmanx21@reddit
I doubt it. They'll probably just give you a slap on the wrist and have you watch some safety videos, or maybe bring you back to the yard and make you do some actual backing practice With a trainer or safety looking over your shoulder.
Sufficient_Tooth_949@reddit
I highly doubt it, you will get a tongue lashing on the phone from the safety department and that will be the end of it
Don't get too down on yourself, if you haven't had a parking lot boop you ain't trucking
Spazecowboy@reddit
Doubt it.
I had a new job and had to back into driveway with stone pillars. Broke the right side mirror, just the glass. I got yelled at more for driving home with broken mirror than for breaking it. It was stupid looking back but lessons learned.
confusedbystupidity@reddit
Mirrors are easy to replace, don't see nothing past a write up, I've hit the side of a truck and still was employed by the company
RyuKirito@reddit
I don’t know about other companies. I can’t imagine you’d be fired for that as long as you reported it! If it was JB Hunt you’d report it and they’d stop you from driving for today’s while you retrain and be written up, but not fired. You still get paid for retraining.
Embarrassed-Toe-904@reddit
If it's just a mirror, just ignore it until after your 10hr reset.
When you wake up, call safety or your dispatch and say you woke up with a broken mirror. Somebody must of hit it when you were sleeping. Almost all these companies just have event cameras and can't actually check footage unless an event is set off.
tractorferret@reddit
Yea bro just lie! If I was your boss I’d fire your ass for lying and not taking responsibility for your actions. Means you can’t be trusted.
Naive-Ad-4611@reddit (OP)
That’s the other drivers mirror
Embarrassed-Toe-904@reddit
Yeah my bad.
Well, that's my advice if you ever get into another incident and only your truck is damaged. Obviously, front-end damage is usually a no-go for that tip because it would have set the camera off. Any damage to the side of your truck you can 100% say you woke up with the damage.
Nero-Danteson@reddit
That depends. The cameras record 24/7 but only retain events for longer than a week. (It also flags them for safety to review.) Pulled into a stuffed to the brim love's and had to park on the curb going into the fuel island. (Employees of the store were aware and fine with the fact. I wasn't blocking any pumps just once you had chose your pump you were stuck even if the asshat was taking their 30 on the pump.) anyway had someone back into me because they wanted a different pump. Luckily he did back up slowly but he bumped my truck. No real damage, just some stuff I buffed out with my thumb. I did lecture the driver some since it was obvious that he was newer than me. (Plus he told me 😂) Got a call the next morning asking why I didn't report the incident. And lecturing me about choosing better parking. I calmly asked them why the hell did they commit me to a load with only 2 hours on my clock and the pickup being an hour away from location and the nearest truck stop being another hour from there. Even pointed out that I did try to get a legitimate parking spot but some other asshole barged into it while I was resetting so I wouldn't hit someone. Got told about trip planning yadda yadda (which I had but my PTA was ignored 'because you had hours to get the load'). That was all from safety. Later get called by my driver leader asking why safety called me. He was off when the load was assigned and saw everything. Where I had even messaged whoever wanted to look asking why they dispatched me on the load that night (never received a reply).
Also had other non-scary times when I get a message like "nice work for dodging the idiots" and I never set off the camera. And had times where I've punched my door outta frustration hard enough to set it off. First time that happened I got a message asking what hit me. I was like "Me. I'm cranky and have a shitty Great Dane trailer. Gonna go park and have a nap." Got my delivery stretched out a day so I could have a night off with that one 😂
hooligan-6318@reddit
Doubtful, unless you've been in several incidents lately, it'll likely be a "preventable" on your record there.
lemme-emi@reddit
See, this is the reason why I’m hesitant about getting into trucking. I’ve long seen it as my best option for a solid career and life, but unsure if the stress and poor treatment are worth it. I know I will most likely mess up a little bit as a new driver. The stress of potentially being laid off and out of work due to a learning curve puts me on edge.
gunsndonuts@reddit
If this was your only incident I certainly wouldn't fire you, shit happens
ItzTaras@reddit
You’re cooked OP. Turn in your badge.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Personally I would just pay this out of pocket with the other driver. Probably $500. Since you already reported it to the company, you can offer to pay it to avoid any penalty.
DEeZ_NutZ_KiLLaKill_@reddit
Ps stay away from the crowds, avoid the small busy truck stops an gas stations, park on the street if at all possible!! I’d rather walk a bit or get bitched at for a few minutes to long at a pump then fill out accident reports
DEeZ_NutZ_KiLLaKill_@reddit
I’ve had a mirror taken out in the middle of bumber to bumper traffic by a box truck They are made to take a lot of abuse with many parts easily replaced for this reason.. be honest and no attitude should work out ok. Not dot recordable so that’s good! Hopefully you didn’t need to involve authorities being a company to company matter?!
cmb297@reddit
Better learn Canadian buddy
RoweTheGreat@reddit
Believe it or not, straight to the firing squad.
Kan-ka@reddit
You should be fine it’s a just a minor accident that didn’t hurt anyone or needed police to be there. I once seen someone hit a mirror of another truck and they called the police for that. You don’t need to do that for this reason only when you hurt someone.
JakeJascob@reddit
Nah along as u don't crunch someone engine or pull your trailer over there hood it's usually written off
BlanketpartyBoy256@reddit
Is Covenant that strict?
channelpurplee@reddit
You didn’t do that
santanzchild@reddit
did you fail to repot it or something?
Naive-Ad-4611@reddit (OP)
I reported it
santanzchild@reddit
you will likely be fine than when you meet with safety or whom ever just express what you did wromg how you will address the short coming and that it will never happen again.
Naive-Ad-4611@reddit (OP)
Yeah he was nose in and it was the last spot I was good on my left and it was tight and adjusted last minute.
TruckerChet1973@reddit
My guess would be a stern talking to and close quarters training. But in this economy hard to say.
Vanstrucker2222@reddit
At my company you wouldn’t unless your brand new and not following policy. They just take your safety bonus
