Urban EDC lighter uses for those who don't smoke?
Posted by CallsEverythingLoss@reddit | preppers | View on Reddit | 40 comments
A homeless man traded me a lighter in exchange for a can of beans and since I don't smoke I'm wondering if there are any good urban EDC uses for it. I'm aware you can use it to melt glue sticks and meld frayed ends on rope, but I don't use rope often and I'd just use superglue for daily repairs. Any ideas?
Adol214@reddit
You can trade it.
For a can of beans for example.
SnooLobsters1308@reddit
Did you just ask a prepper forum for uses for a lighter?
On a scale of 1 to 10, that is either expert trolling level 11, or noob prepper -2, I'm not sure which ....
:)
Every prepper needs a lighter, or 20 ... . We're perppers, when the lights go out, we start fires. When we need heat, we start fires. Lighters start fires. Q.E.D.
Sugar-Active@reddit
I'm glad the guy ate, but couldn't you have just GIVEN him the can of beans?

Fire is the cornerstone of human survival.
My van broke down one time out in the proper middle of nowhere. I was a novice prepped at the time and kind of an idiot but thank my lucky stars I had put a ferro rod in the car's first aid kit. It gets cold as fuck in the desert at night, even in the summer. Pretty sure that's the whole reason I didn't freeze to death that night. Got the van running the next day and now I keep a bic lighter in ALL my emergency packs. I am also a smoker of the green, so I carry one on me too but even if I didn't smoke I'd still carry it.

Be careful with relying on plastic lighters in hot climates. I’m in Florida and used to keep several in my GHB in my truck. One time I was doing a yearly inventory of my stuff and noticed that all the fluid had leaked out of the lighters. Either evaporated or something. I’m guessing the plastic expanded in the heat.
Another thing is I had a bunch of emergency candles, which all melted together into one big blob.

Also could have been from the fuel lever getting accidentally pressed. I’ve since started using this and it’s been great.

I don’t know, there were five in a Ziploc bag and all were empty.

Personally, I keep one of these in my van at all times (and a mapp gas canister).

Use it all the time. Nice to be able to start a fire without kindling or anything, and the canister lasts forever. Also carry lighters and other flame measures, but this is plan A.
Also, for desert warmth, I keep a bag of wool blankets in there, even without heat, a stack of wool blankets will do wonders. And I’ve had camping trips with other under prepared folks, and it was handy to pass some out.
kingofzdom@reddit
Hey I literally have that exact torch in my tool box now for the purpose of doing dabs lol. It starts fires really fast.
AshamedCareer7007@reddit
Just used mine to bust some suspension bolts. Life saver.
GermanGamering@reddit
That’s so cool that you smoke weed
satsugene@reddit
Yeah.
Too many folks don’t know that the desert can be deadly cold at night and uncomfortablely hot on the same day.
Know_more_carry_less@reddit
Can confirm. Once got hypothermic in the NM high desert in late June. Sweated all day (high 80’s) didn’t change in to dry clothes as the sun went down (low 50’s).
I was simultaneously both the big spoon and little spoon that night for a while. An embarrassing lesson learned.

Offering a light to someone agitated and needing a smoke. I was reading about the UN peacekeepers, and apparently they're all issued a pack of cigarettes, whether they smoke or not, because it can really diffuse a situation.
funkmon@reddit
That's actually excellent
funkmon@reddit
Genuinely no. You have to search for these uses. 100% not worth an EDC.
However, having a lighter is useful of course in situations with no electricity.
walnutplugz0@reddit
TLDR: how do i use a lighter?
jacksraging_bileduct@reddit
A lighter is something everyone should carry.
Frequent_Fold_7871@reddit
Bro has become jaded to the idea of starting a fire with the flick of a finger. God-tier power, has to ask internet if there's any use for it. Nah man, toss it.
davidm2232@reddit
Melting frozen locks, playing with the striker in your pocket, loaning out to friends that smoke (makes you the most popular guy in the group if no one else has a lighter), holding up at concerts, heating up spoons to do drugs (not sure which but I know you can). There are endless uses. I probably use mine at least a few times a week but I start fires pretty regularly.
ThrowawayFuckYourMom@reddit
Fire.
Otherwise, you can light someone else's cigarette.
Or if you ever happen to find a candle.
Or you run out of matches
Or you grow up and stop using the ferro-rod.
Or you realize the potential of having 2 while camping.
Or you need to burn of the end of a rope you found.
Or you keep classified documents that you need to burn.
Or you wanna stare at a dancing light until the gas runs out (ca. 45-55 minutes)
Or you wanna save it for New Years Eve, or 4th of July
Or you have a needle that needs sterilization (You run out of alcohol)
Or you wanna light an alcohol stove.
Or you can think of something else.
gustavotherecliner@reddit
Nice trade. But seriously, how do you guys trade with homeless people?
All of them in my area are just straight crazy or zonked out of their minds.
Suspicious_Hornet_77@reddit
Alaskan here. I carry 2 lighters on me at all times. If I head out I to the bush I carry a ferro rod too.
Fire is life when it's -20.
featurekreep@reddit
You heat things and light things on fire with it, it's not that complicated.
I've carried a lighter as a non smoker for almost 20 years, can't imagine NOT having one. I've lit candles at more than a few weddings when no one can find a light.
No-Evidence-3250@reddit
Wrap a good amount of duct tape around it and just keep it in your pocket. If you got that and knife your more prepared than most
Droidy934@reddit
Anything that is sewed togther has loose ends. Singe them so that they dont come undone, most threads are rayon and by blobbing the end you prevent them unthreading.
joelnicity@reddit
You can use it to start a fire
Astarkos@reddit
Its a reliable source of small amounts of heat and light.
TerriblePabz@reddit
Wrap a piece of jute twine dipped in a light coat of wax, secure with one wrap of gorilla tape, place things like small coil of yarn for extra kindling, a needle, and exacto blade, or even spare flint on the sticky side of the tape and continue wrapping a few more times. Now you have a lighter, easy way to transfer your flame, 2 forms of kindling, strong tape, a small blade, and a needle for splinters/sewing/medical. Takes up no more space than a normal bic lighter and gives you a few more options without worrying about where it all is
Johnny-Unitas@reddit
Go camping or hiking and tell me how it goes without a source of fire.
PrepperBoi@reddit
A lot of camp stoves have a built in igniter on them. There’s harder ways to make fire anyways.
pappyvanwinkle1111@reddit
The homeless guy could have heated his can of beans with it. But noooo. You killed that dream!
NameChanged_BenHackd@reddit
Ha ha ha 🤣
chris_rage_is_back@reddit
I carry a Bic in each front pocket mostly because I smoke weed but fire is always handy and 2 is 1, 1 is none, and lighters are easy to poach
armchairdynastyscout@reddit
Bic in the fist
boobookitty2@reddit
I've got 10 bic lighters at least in different bags...scattered throughout.
Best at home use is frayed items, shoelaces...military bde's I'd burn off the strings...
Again, throw it in a camping bag and forget it. 10 years later it'll do the job.
1c0n0cl4st@reddit
One use I have for a lighter that hasn't been mentioned yet: sterilizing a needle. I always have a SAK on me and it has a needle in the scales. Whether it is a splinter or blister, sometimes I need to poke myself with a needle. It is better to sterilize it first before jabbing it into my body.
Otherwise, I mostly use it for burning the end of paracord and lighting fires when I go camping. Now that you have a lighter, you can go camping more often!
Flat_Boysenberry1669@reddit
I actually carry a mini petrol lighter on my keychain it's pretty dope it's worked 4 months after I put fluid in it and didn't touch it.
A bick would do the same if not longer but doesn't fit on my wallet chain as nicely lol.
Background_Angle1717@reddit
Fusing/sealing heat shrink electric terminal covers, sealing paracord, burning off flyers/hanging threads…. This is EDC function related. Multiple prep uses like melting and repurposing wax, fire starting (duh) especially if your hands lack dexterity, lighting illumination devices (as previously stated).
KrankySilverFox@reddit
Lighting candles, lanterns, gas stove if power is off and the electric clicker thingy doesn’t work, gas log fireplace etc.
