A car people made fun of you for driving but you loved?

Mine was a 2015 fiat 500C that thing was the most fun car I had to drive might be bias cause it was first car I had bought it for 6 grand with 78k km on it and that little monster ran till 225k km till he blew up lol

People point at my beat up wrecked in rear bent truck bed cracked windshield chewed upholstery 3 years not washed 200k plus mile ford ranger and laugh at me especially the giant ford and ram pickup truck owners i just laugh and tell them i dont have to compensate for a tiny cock lol
Born-Drawer-4451@reddit
Fiat 500e, the ultimate short commuter. I loved that thing to death. So much so that every year I’m in Italy I ensure I have a 500c ready to go 🥰

A 2004 or 2006 euro-market Smart ForTwo imported to America before the next gen of Smarts officially went on sale here. Some people laughed with me, some laughed at me. I loved it! So fun and silly, definitely made people happy and some turn their nose up. I also had a 911 and a F250, so, pretty well rounded 😂

I would thrash my 05 Subaru Forester turbo, I’d handbrake drift it on icy dirt roads but always felt like everyone expected a lesbian to climb out
Sorry-Dig-5588@reddit (OP)
I’m on the same boat atm lol just bought a 2024 Impreza rs is it a lesbian hoping out with a golden retriever or a soccer mom? Nope it’s a 6 foot 2 dude got to keep em on their toes
f1nnz2@reddit
I have a 03 outback in the white and tan colors. Total lezzbaru, that’s what I call it even. It’s my camping/snow/dog car. Same as you, 6’1 bearded dude climbing out of that thing lol
Cold-Inside-6828@reddit
My first car was a 1988 Ford Taurus and it was a total hooptie, but I loved that car. So much freedom.
NeelSahay0@reddit
Miata. People (by people I mean pickup truck owners) have threatened to run me off the road, thrown things at me, and even pulled out weapons.
Something about a small car and a smiling man makes pickup bros short circuit.
bandaidsplus@reddit
Wow where did you live at? I have some bad experience with people in SUV's on motorcycles but threatening to run off the road by truck guys is crazy lol. Sounds like the south.
NeelSahay0@reddit
Bay Area California. Think about the kind of person who buys a lifted truck out here… they’re trying to make a statement.
Remarkable_Skirt_231@reddit
I live up here too and you hit it on the head lol. Start in oakland, once you pass concord/walnut creek things start to get freakkyyyy
NeelSahay0@reddit
When my parents moved to Gilroy I told them the best thing about Santa Clara county is that it isn’t Alameda county. Lol
bandaidsplus@reddit
Ahh yes, the F-150 Platinum edition with a lift so high no working man could ever actually feasibly use it for work. Cosplayers in their emotional support vehicles. We know those types up here in Canada too lol.
The language of insecure dickheads is universal.
Remarkable_Skirt_231@reddit
I see a lot of cybertrucks up here, the dirtiest you see them is with lots of fingerprints, never mud or dirt.
AutomobileEnjoyer@reddit
As someone who daily drives a 90 Miata in the Deep South surrounded by pickup trucks, you’re driving like an asshole. I’ve never had a single bad interaction.
NeelSahay0@reddit
It was always when my car was still cold so I was driving/accelerating slowly. I’ve actually never received a ticket- I’m a pretty cautious driver, even on my sportbike
It’s also happened while I was standing on the sidewalk… straight up been racially heckled. so, I think it has more to do with my complexion and beard, haha.
AutomobileEnjoyer@reddit
I’m also not white, I feel like you need to look within, if you’ve had people pull weapons on you while driving you must be doing some crazy maneuvers or just going 20 under the speed linit
NeelSahay0@reddit
The weapon situation was in stop and go traffic in Hayward CA.
Truck driver was so mad that I was following at 5mph with a safe distance of over one car length that all of a sudden I see a guy trying to throw a sledgehammer at my Miata.
I wasn’t talking about a firearm. But
Main_Couple7809@reddit
I’m starting to think it’s you, with the amount of experience you got. I also ride motorcycles and bicycles. Had various small cars, not Miata though. Also in Bay Area, East bay. I’ve never had experiences like you. I’m also not white.
NeelSahay0@reddit
I’ve been riding for many years and owned a Miata for almost a decade. This has happened like a dozen times in total in 8 years. I wouldn’t call that much experience.
Anyways, ride solo in central Livermore for an hour and tell me how the pickup trucks react.
Main_Couple7809@reddit
Well your previous posts made it sound like it’s common occurrence. Now it’s a dozen of time in 8 years. Not that I’m saying it’s ok, not even for one time. It never happened to me or I didn’t pay attention. That being said I do bike a lot.
NeelSahay0@reddit
I have met a person at a social gathering who, as soon as they saw me arrive on bicycle, bragged about hitting cyclists with their lifted diesel truck, specifically mentioning that I am the same race as who they most recently hit. This was in Pleasanton. Is that enough to show a trend here?
Main_Couple7809@reddit
What did you do about it?
NeelSahay0@reddit
Nothing man, I wasn’t trying to get shot. You really wanna try your luck with those kinda people? I just left.
Main_Couple7809@reddit
No one at that social gathering said anything? You need new friends and change your social circle, man
NeelSahay0@reddit
It was like four people and the owner of the place left with me on his own bike. We dispersed without conflict.
Cute_Employer_7459@reddit
Yeah I delivered pizzas for almost a decade it was kind of amusing how some people seem to have some issue with someone on the road every couple weeks and I'm like "this has happened to me, like 2 or 3 times in 9 years at this job"
The bay around is a different beast though so I don't think OP could be that bad
Sure_Comfort_7031@reddit
Which is insane to me because the amount of people I know who flip flop between pick em up trucks and miatas is insane. The miata world is full of truck bros.
NeelSahay0@reddit
Yeah you’re totally right.
Sorry-Dig-5588@reddit (OP)
When I drove that fiat 500 as a dude I just called it The uncompensator
woolash@reddit
I used to pick Fiat 500's as a cheap rental from Enterprise. A bit squirrely perhaps but fun little cars. The Abarth version is supposedly super-fun.
rocko430@reddit
They sound good too. Honestly the aparth was a bit understated but would probably be appreciated now
Old-Figure922@reddit
Had a friend with an abarth a while back. Granted, it was modded, but it was fun as hell
Ultrabananna@reddit
VW Beatle.... Friend got one for cheap the 2012+ turboed ones. I don't know what he did to it but that thing was fun as hell and looked like a rounded out Porsche. He definitely had at least close to 300hp or at least it felt like it
landsharkmark@reddit
Literally this happens with me in my little 95 Impreza coupe lol. It's such a small car. But it's fun, and, and is a breeze to drive in the ice.
sbkerr29@reddit
Where the fuck do you live? That seems insane.
majorgerth@reddit
Same with a BRZ. Not as bad but still.
NeelSahay0@reddit
To be honest I may be blowing it up in my head as it’s happened way more times on my bicycle or motorcycle. It’s only happened a handful of times in the Miata, but they were pretty nuts lol.
majorgerth@reddit
I can’t tell you how many times someone asked if I (a man with a beard) was a lesbian. Lol. I would get SUVs not let me merge. I had a ton of rams (always rams for some reason) race me on a specific interstate onramp and be pissy when I won. 220 horsepower in a 2800 lb car will do that. I did feel like average crappy drivers treated me better in that BRZ than when I had a loaner Camry after being rear ended. Overall I don’t think I got a ton of hate, but I definitely did get some hate specifically for driving a small sports car. I have an old LJ now and it hates being anywhere besides the right lane so I really don’t have any issues now that I drive slow. Never drove crazy in the BRZ, but the 5-15 over crowd in the left lane definitely treat each other worse than the speed limit people in the right lane.
otterlytrans@reddit
my department chair has a miata and it’s such a sick ass car. she’s a badass.
Scazitar@reddit
It's interesting how different things are in different regions.
I literally get nothing but compliments about my Miata in Chicago. Their not very common here so they get a ton of positive attention.
We also don't have the same level of bravado and culture about trucks. Their super popular here but it's all like regular people that own them for family haulers or work trucks. People mod them but you don't see anything like you see in the country. I have a truck for construction as well with the miata lol.
It's just crazy how we live in the same country but it's just totally unrelatable.
IntelligentBench6880@reddit

1971 Honda 600 2 cylinder car like a mini. Had one in San Francisco and traded it for a Honda CB550f. 10 inch tires. Could park anywhere even on the sidewalks by UCSF. Could seat 4 and still lug up Clarendon in second at like 6k rpm. Thing would go over the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges. San Rafael can get windy. Fun like a Honda 450 but with heater and windshield wipers. My mother went for a ride to shop on a rainy night she gave me her nice Toyota so I wouldn't get killed. People laughed at but hauled around the City better than a Beetle speed wise and handling.
AngelMeatPie@reddit
My FL2 Tiburon. Typical Hyundai hate, which at the time wasn’t warranted as they are very reliable cars. I’ll give them the slow and FWD bit, but it was very fun to drive and an absolutely beautiful car.
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
I had a 2005 Elantra "GLT". It was a GL hatchback, but I added some GT options that I picked up parts for- leather steering wheel, GT alloy wheels. I also picked up the Tibby upgraded sound system- JBL amp and Infinity subwoofer... wired it to the power antenna lead so didn't even have to run the wires all the way back. The Elantra and Tiburon shared the floorpan, so I even upgraded my sway bar with the one for the Tiburon sport suspension.
It was a generously sized compact with nice options- power everthing, keyless entry, all that. My son drove it after I did; he just sold it last month with 200k miles on the clock.
AngelMeatPie@reddit
I learned manual on that gen Elantra hatch! Great cars and really good era for Hyundai. Thanks for sharing. It’s interesting you could upgrade it with Tib parts.
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
At that time there were two very active Elantra fanboi forums and also Hyundai let people access their tech manuals and parts lists, so there was ample opportunity to learn what would work with minimal risk. Some dealers were charging more than MSRP though, so they convinced Hyundai to put the information inside their firewall. So disappointing.

A 1994 Ford Escort 1.8 TDCI 3 Door, base spec no electric windows or nothing but it did have a sunroof and rusty front wings. I got it on 38k miles for around £450 and it was one of the best cars I ever owned till I bent the driveshaft and couldn’t source another one but I still made a nice profit on it after adding around 10k miles on the clock :)

I had an 84 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. 3.0 V6. Plenty of power. My friends were all racing out CRX Si. And my car was the butt of many jokes. The Hondas were fun and all but my Oldsmobile was so comfortable and like I said, plenty powerful.

1986 Plymouth Colt two door hatchback.
I painted flames on the hood. My brother had it before me, and I think he stripped parts of the interior in a failed attempt to add speakers.
I had to add speakers myself from a broken boombox we had in the basement. I also added wooden roof racks for surfboards and stripped the failing headliner out in the process.
It was per perfect for me and I'd have no problem driving it again today, 26 years later. If I went back in time with all the knowledge I have now, I'd still choose that car!

In the states a good amount of people drive pickup trucks and the field I'm in has me in a place with a high ratio of truck to people. My current car is a 500 sport 1.4 non turbo and at least once a drive I'm ear to ear grinning but it does get shit on because "men". May not be fast, but it's pretty quick and I baby the thing. Used to know a guy who had a bunch of cars, hot rods like an 8 second pro street Camaro with full interior, a couple 911’s including a GT3 and a 911 Turbo S, a Lambo and a Ferrari, you get the picture. 09 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. Everyone talked about how crappy Mitsubishi is, they're going under, their cars suck yadda yadda. White 94 Geo Tracker with pink stripes in manual. Barbie-mobile, lesbian 4x4. Caught lots of flack for it but the thing was a tank. Never got stuck when I went for some light off-road stuff. Not so much making fun of me but getting angry that I was driving “such a clean car” in winter. My first car: a ‘70 cutlass that was older than me. I didn’t know anything about cars other than I needed one and it’s the best car I could buy at the time (paid 800$; it had 40,000 miles). It was my daily driver for 4 years. It’s the only car I ever made a profit on when I sold it.

Excellent and reliable vehicle that was surprisingly amenable to being driven hard and super easy to work on. There was not a thing I felt I couldn’t fix on that car. Extremely comfortable interior and great sound system (for the era). All while getting great mileage.

Had a 93 Geo Metro as my first car (Suzuki Swift for those across the pond). That 1L 3 cylinder was perfect. Set up 2 12s ported behind the rear seat. That thing would be cruising to school bumping Gucci Mane and Young Dolph. It did the best I brake turns, and you could go around a corner gunning it without breaking the speed limit.
The 3sp auto was disappointing. It was fast enough to go back to the future, as I found out with my foot pinned to the floor while getting pulled over. Just glad I never crashed into anybody in that thing. So unsafe lol.

98 dodge neon r/t that I had rebuilt the motor into a naturally aspirated monster. Had big loopy cams, high compression pistons with a decked head, built bottom and top end, and crazy custom intake and exhaust manifolds, amongst other stuff. It was a rocket, fun as shit to drive, and no one ever believed how fast it was til they rode in it.
Ended up bending a valve and it sat in my driveway for like 6 years til I just sold it and all its parts to someone who wanted to rebuild it.

Mazda5 with the rare 6MT. A car this inexpensive and practical shouldn’t be enjoyable to drive, but it is. When I look at it I smile. When I drive it I smile even more. I’ve driven plenty of expensive cars over the years but this one makes me happier than all of those. Coworkers didn’t understand why I had a picture of a minivan as the wallpaper on my computer, but they just don’t get it. Another coworker, one that drives a heavily modified F-250, asked why I drove such a small, girly car, and I just replied that I have a large, uh, member. Best car purchase I’ve ever made and I’m keeping it until I’m too old to drive, and I’d do so even if I won the lottery - I like it that much.

Geo Metro. It's been said that you should make sure you are married or at least one serious relationship before owning one of these, but I loved my Geo Metro. It was my car in high school. This thing would smoke a Mustang Cobra at the start. It drove on rails, cops would pull me over just to ask questions about the car or how i could afford it (purchased used in 98 for 2k).
I had multiple cops ask if we could race. That thing was amazing... until the transmission failed, and I spent a small fortune trying to get it fixed in one of the only places in Houston that would even look at it.
Took it with me to Hawaii when I got stationed there, and they had to tow it off the boat. I knew it was a death sentence for that poor car. The first gear synchro went out. I drove it around for six months starting in second gear but eventually treaded it in for something much more reliable as i simply didn't have the money, time, or resources to keep it going. ‘91 Ford Probe. It was blue and had mechanical headlights. The chest part of the seat belt was automatic and would move accordingly whenever the door would open or close. Handles like an absolute boat, and I came to love that about it. One of the last great American land yacht cars. Super good in bad weather too. Mine needs some TLC but it's still very driveable. Bushings, front CV joints, tires and few other little things. One day I'm gonna get it back into shape.

1975 AMC Pacer. Robin's egg blue with a virgin white interior. Manual transmission and glass...forever. Took ALOT of crap for that car, but it was roomy and comfortable. It only lasted to 160,000 miles...but took me where I needed to go and back again. I can't say that I truly miss it - but I do have some fond memories of that car.

2005 Scion XB. I got it around 2008 I think and when they were new they were looked at as weird, and I LOVE weird shit. It was slow and everyone called it the toaster but I loved everything else about it. Middle mounted gauge cluster and all. It was black cherry with the tiniest little black rims and tires. I popped in a Pioneer head unit and a Boston Acoustic sub. Still think of it fondly when I see one on the road.

Easy. I got 2, first one was my teenage car, a 79 Datsun b210. It was Burnt Orange color and in mint condition. This was in like 1997. My friends and everyone just ragged on that car to no end. Called it names and stuff. I loved it. 2 door, 4 speed manual, i4 with like 70 horsepower probably (if that), but it was a great car that was so easy to work on and taught me a lot. Wish I still had it, I've seen some awesome restomod b210s. Second is my current daily, a 2014 Nissan Juke with the horrible CVT. Peppy turbo 4, good ground clearance, good visibility, decent interior space for the size. I liked the Fit I came from much better as it was super fun to drive and got great gas mileage, but this car is pretty decent for the amount of cash I paid. Old people love it and ask me about it all the time, but "car guy" "friends" at work take a lot of jabs at it. Even Carvana only offers me 50 bucks for it in mint condition 😂. That's ok, this is one that I'll drive till the wheels fall off. Or rather, till the CVT belt rips off cause I ain't paying more for a new trans than I paid for the whole car. Good thing trans fluid change is easier than oil change and do it every 15k miles. Until then I ride it. I've had to replace some things that are normal for a car of that vintage, coil packs, alternator, sensors etc. but otherwise I treat it good and it gets me to work like a champ. Let them other dudes I work with pay 1k a month for their 2500s and Super Dutys and only use them to get back and forth to work, I'll be happy spending my money elsewhere.

'84 Chevy Citation. Full size hatch back. I could stick my bike in the back without removing the wheels. Did 130kph (80mph) all day with no problems. Even though it was a budget model, more comfortable than many mid range models today. Manufactures seem to have forgoten about ergonomics.

I got an outside sales job and had to cover thousands of miles. I didn't want to put a ton of miles on my personal sporty car, so I needed a designated work car. So, to a lot of peoples surprised I got a ,,
Lincoln Towncar.
It was a very strategic choice. They're big and only old folks like them but the benefits!
New, they were a $40,000 luxury car. I got mine for $5,000 with under 100,000 miles.
They have one of the most reliable engines ever made, the Ford 4.6.
I had leather and every option imaginable, and it cruised the freeways like a dream. Never one issue ever.
Used it 3 years till I changed jobs and sold it for $5,000.

The C-ship. Belonged to my baby momma technically but I'm the one that became one with it so im the one that drove it. I called it the C-ship some but mostly that went over heads so I usually called it the wagon letter formerly shaped like a car. But it's full given name was Chevrolet citation station wagon shaped like the letter C. Sold that mutha to a buddy brother for $300. And he drove it til his drunk fatha killed it to death in a fight with a ditch. But when they made fun it wasn't that impressive. The car did all the work. They just merely laughed at themselves for stating the obvious. Can't hurt what ain't there. Feel them feelings, foo!!

I'm a compact and subcompact enthusiast. And I love fixing extremely cheap (often sub-$500) cars. I get a lot of jokes for driving what would be considered a hooptie by anyone else. Those same people don't laugh so hard when my $250 1994 Honda Civic has fewer problems and costs less to fix than their car. I suspect my $300 1996 Infiniti G20 will be a nice return to form on that end.
Even my 2015 Honda Fit gets a lot of confused stares at car meets. "You paid $14,000 for a tiny hatch? Why not buy a sports car?" I bought what I wanted and I care far more about practicality and serviceability than performance, plus I prefer my cars basic. I don't want electric parking brakes, push button starts, integrated infotainment, or anything like that in any car I own. And I do almost double the average annual mileage in the US, much of which is in tight city streets. Some will say I could buy a fun car, but I don't believe in separating fun and dailyable. ANY car I buy must be fun to drive, no exceptions. I also don't do pavement princesses, anything in my fleet must be usable as a daily. Again, no exceptions. My cars are a reflection of how I do things. And while my tastes and methods are strange to most, they work for me.

I will never make fun of someone (in a serious manner, I will kid my friends) for the car they drive IF, and only if, they show true interest in their car, interest in driving correctly, and show they are wanting to learn and be more educated on it and how it works and all cars work.
Jeremy Clarkson has obviously said a bunch of nonsense over the years but he had one quote that always struck with me and I agree with. Something along the lines of "If you show no interest in something, you shouldn't be doing it. I have no interest in brain surgery, so I am not going to bother with learning it or cutting into someone's brain." Hammond immediately also said "I have no interest in cooking, so I wouldn't expect anyone to come to me for their dinner." I cannot tell you how many times in my career in the automotive industry I have asked a customer what kind of car they drive, and they literally respond "I dunno the green one outside."

1st Gen Dodge Neon. The year was 2004, and I swapped in a 2.4L turbo out of a PT cruiser (same engine as the SRT-4). I bought the engine at a scrap yard for $800 and it had 35,000km on it. I stuck a 50 trim T3/T4 turbo on it and made 383WHP at 21psi. It ran high 11s in the 1/4 mile and was a daily driver with a custom built 3 speed with reverse pattern manual valve body. It was my tool of choice to go Mustang hunting in. The knowledge and experience I gained from it were worth the $8000 i spent on the car in total.

Volk wheels, skunk2 full suspension (everything, asr brace etc), carbon hood fenders trunk top and doors, lambo doors, blue neon's inside and out, greedy exhaust, pwr steering and ac.
...but it was a delsol and I dated the hottest girl in school which also hated it. I got called gay and all kinds of shit lol. I traded it for a base 04 TL which I still regret. Minus the neon's and lambo doors it would be a 30k car today.

I could do the points in the parking lot with half an Emory board and a pocket knife. Carburator acting up $2.10 for the rebuild kit. I did the clutch by myself by putting her on the curb. Five glass fuses were the electrical system. Great on gas and blasted through weather like a D9 dozer. I slept in it for a few weeks after coming home from Vietnam and toured from NY to Seattle and then back to Nebraska before it tossed the shaft and I had to get a u joint. I’m 6’3”. I used to own a 1997 miata (built engine, supercharger (shoulda gone turbo, but that supercharger whine…) 235hp to the wheels. Flyin’ Miata got a LOT of money from me for suspension goodies.
I sort of fit with the top up, but had to slouch. I couldn’t see traffic signals at intersections because the windshield frame and rear view mirror blocked my view. In fact, the rear view mirror was so obtrusive that I completely removed it and converted the side mirrors to convex mirrors (someone made/makes a stick on mirror that completely covers the factory mirrors. The curve is subtle and just enough that I could see behind the car as well as beside).
That car was stupid fun to drive!
