I drive an 06 V8 xc90 and it's what we use on long trips. We call it the big, comfy couch on the highway because it's so comfortable. I love the beast, I'm going to be really sad to move on from it. Volvo has not impressed me with their new versions of xc90. The engine needs at least a V6 or V8 their heavy cars. Bring back a 5 cylinder engine
aaayyyuuussshhh@reddit
Motortrend tested a V8 XC90 2006 model and it did 0-60 in 7.0 seconds. That is very slow compared to the T6 and T8 XC90. Like a T8 model is 2-3 SECONDS quicker 0-60...
Even cars like a V6 traverse/palisade/highlander which are larger than your V8 XC90 are quicker 0-60. I don't think you have any clue what you're talking about about lol. Especially once you factor in how slow your 06 trans is, the newer cars are WAY better in the real world. T5 model is slower but again it's WAY faster than a base 208hp 2.5T XC90 from 2006.
I drive a 450hp+ V8 so like sure I'd love a V8 but I don't see any reason why you'd need a V8 when the T8 model is available with 455HP and 500+ torque and does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. That's 2.5 seconds quicker than your V8 2006 model....

I didn't say anything about 0-60 it's a pointless measurement. I'm talking about comfortability on the highway something a V8 or V6 has over whiny 4 cylinder with supercharger and turbo.. The 5cyl and 6 cylinder Volvos are very good engines ask any Volvo mechanic.

Have you driven any new cars? I hope you are joking because the new XC90 and most competitors are significantly more quiet inside, more refined and stable on the highway, have more responsive transmissions, and their engines make more torque and lower rpm for quick acceleration onto highways and overtaking cars. I've driven the older Volvo V8s and turbo 5s and god are they awful. Slow, lethargic, noisy, laggy turbo engines and unresponsive transmissions, and horrendous fuel economy. I checked fuelly.com and it seems like you V8 owners average less mpg an Escalade ESV 4x4 6.2l V8 with 420hp.
Keep lying to yourself lol. Saying they need a v6 or v8 while driving a V8 that gets horrible fuel efficiency and is slower many N/A v6 competitors is delusional at best. No reason for volvo to stick a v6 or v8 when they have the T8 PHEV powertrain which is extremely responsive and stupid fast.

I have an XC90 recharge. Everything about it is fine but if you have two child seats in the middle row then access to the 3rd row becomes almost impossible. Anyone looking to haul 6-7 people with decent regularity should just get a minivan

If I had unlimited money I would test cars by taking all of the five star cars and incrementally increasing speeds until they begin to not “pass”. I understand why they do testing the way they do it, but it would be nice to know which car was actually built the best for crashes.
kuddlesworth9419@reddit
Would like to see tests done at 60mph-70mph.

It’s probably gonna be one of the skateboard EVs. Structurally speaking, it is just a raw advantage to have more crumple zone at the edges. The battery also acts toward the cabin like how the back panel on a book shelf makes it so much stronger.
tulipa1634@reddit
But where does the kinetic energy go in that case? I prefer a good crumple zone that absorbs energy, instead of it being transferred to me?
Agloe_Dreams@reddit
…that’s what I’m talking about. The nose of EVs, without an engine, have a much larger crumple zone.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
And that battery makes for low CoG, which makes them quite hard to roll over. On release, the model x was the first SUV to get 5 stars in every ncap subcategory
And sadly there is no defying physics. EVs are usually heavier than their ICE counterparts and f=ma.
Ghost_of_P34@reddit
Or just do a round robin of crashing them into each other. In the end, there can be only one.

The IIHS did a similar experiment a few years ago. There is a quite significant difference between a crash at 40 mph and 56 mph. They have been testing at 40 mph for nearly 30 years now, so it might be time now to raise testing speed. It is interesting to think about which cars would actually perform well at higher test speed, I would presume EVs with massive front crumple zones would score the highest in such tests.
Muted-Ad-6637@reddit
Made me realize they also have the highest mass and therefore momentum to crumple their crumple zones
quantum-quetzal@reddit
The IIHS did recently adjust their side impact test to be more difficult. It went from a 31mph impact with a 3,300 lbs test sled to a 37mph impact with a 4,200 lbs sled. That's a bit over 80% more energy.
It was pretty interesting seeing how cars handled the new test. Only one small car (the Mazda 3) got the top rating in the initial batch of tests for the class. Notably (given their reputation for safety), the Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek scored bottom of their class, with only the Kia Forte joining them in the bottom tier of scores.

Posted earlier today and I found it relevant here. https://www.reddit.com/r/Volvo/s/wC2NDp2Dfv
I love my XC90. Such a great car that looks beautiful at every angle.
solo118@reddit
I had 2 of them in a row, and now I am thinking of getting a 3rd. These are the safest cars on the road, and they drive great.
Quiet-Ad-4476@reddit
They're not the safest, against an EQS SUV an XC90 would fair worse, as it's 500-700kg down.
solo118@reddit
Not sure what to tell you, XC90 rates amazingly well for a 3 row SUV, and I believe little to none fatalities in a car that was running for nearly 10 years.
Quiet-Ad-4476@reddit
Mass wins in a crash, and the XC90 is a lightweight compared to the modern day electric/hybrid 3 row SUV.
The XC90 is one of the safest against itself (and is heavier than most cars on the road), but against anything over its weight it's going to come out worse. How much worse I don't know.
Mnm0602@reddit
Most comfortable seats you can buy I think. Never had to shift my position at all on long road trips.
solo118@reddit
I had leatherette seats on both, they were OK but whenever I wear a thicker jacket or hoodie there is a bump under the headrest on the seat itself that bothers me... no big deal imho overall fantastic car
SteelFlexInc@reddit
The pop up built I’m booster seat in the the back is pretty cool and unique too. Drove a 3.2 I6 AWD model a few years ago for a few days and it felt pretty underpowered though for its weight
IllustriousSteam@reddit
Volvo still probably has a bit of an edge over other cars. They do have the dedicated Volvo Cars Safety Centre where they test all kinds of crash scenarios, unlike most others which only design for NCAP, IIHS, and government crash tests.
