Why did you decide against fitting recessed downlights, and what did you have instead?

Downlights often seem to be the obvious choice, but that doesn't make them the best for everyone

To me, your light fixture(s) are a furnishing that often is important to the overall appearance of the room. Recessed lights can look nice too, but I'm loath to miss out on the statement a good light fixture can make. To me, it would be like replacing your sofa with just a towel on the floor. Sure it functions as a place to sit all the same but it is boring and not making the cover of Better Homes and Gardens anytime soon.

You want pleasant, indirect, ceiling and upper wall diffise light. Downlighters are the opposite of that.

They just have a fairly clinical, relatively dull light and shadow. We have some, but also a variety of options in different rooms, some wall lights, pendant lights, table lamps, standard lamps.

They don't light up the room and just make shadows everywhere. Never understood the appeal at all.
