This is probably the most iconic double album of our generation

I remember waiting in line to buy Mellon Collie from Sam Goody when it was released in fall of '95.
Already obsessed with Gish, Siamese Dream, and Pisces Iscariot at the time, MCIS felt like a brand new version of Smashing Pumpkins. It almost felt like a double album from some obscure band from the late 70's.
But I digress. This was the most life changing album for us angsty 90's teenagers in my view. I know many of you likely have memories attached to this masterpiece too.
Best track? I'd say "Thru the Eyes of a Ruby" is my personal favorite. Let me know yours if interested.

My brother had the instrumental of Tonight Tonight played at his wedding. That’s peak Xennnial.
abbydabbydo@reddit
I begged to walk down the aisle to it at my first wedding. Gen X husbands vetoed it and I walked to Tom Waits instead
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
I have to know which Waits song! And why wasn't it Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis?

I Want You - so sweet
Given this, I tried to get him to walk to Better Off Without a Wife but he nixed that, too
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
Haha, well played!
Basementsnake@reddit
Ugh lol
Dude_man79@reddit
I want thirty-three played at my wedding. I even learned how to play it so i can play it at friend's weddings, which hasn't happened yet.
chronicpainprincess@reddit
I’m walking down the aisle to the album version of Stand Inside Your Love in two days! Massive Xennial choice, but we’re high school best friends who loved Smashing Pumpkins so it was a sound choice. My daughter will walk down during the guitar solo 🎸
Slammogram@reddit
We did our wedding dance to Walking After You by the Foo Fighters.
johnnloki@reddit
Less good, with recent admissions.
Slammogram@reddit
I know, right!? I’m so fucking disappointed.
JohnQPublicc@reddit
Biggie Life After Death. It’s up there too.
Sufficient_Ad2222@reddit
10 year old Mrs favorite Christmas present that year. Played Bullet with Butterfly Wings for my dad, he said “That’s nice. We got you a disc man with headphones too”.
cml5526@reddit
Still prefer Siamese Dream by a hair, but even still, I love the shit out of Mellon Collie, and if it wasn’t for a few duds in the track listing, this would’ve been perfect. Definitely my favorite double album ever
Which_Current2043@reddit

harv3ydg@reddit
“Pooorcelina of the oceans blue”…. Love this album so so much
Build-it-better123@reddit
Totally agree. XYU changed my life. Mom was calling me for dinner when I heard that song for the first time. I was frozen and didn’t make it to dinner on time. Pure rebellion.

Tupac - all eyes on me has entered the chat.

Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds for me. I know it’s not xennials but I listened to that nonstop. I remember it’s first release on cd, I’d never heard it before and my older brother’s mate put it on through a sweet stereo system, super loud and crisp. As soon as that orchestral intro hit I was hooked forever!
TheDarkNightwing@reddit
It remains my favorite album of all time. In that it was like an epicenter for how my tastes have evolved since a teen. From Prog, to shoegaze, to Metal, to new age, to 1920’s piano tunes.
batsofburden@reddit
check out steven wilson, esp his album 'hand cannot erase' if you haven't already.
TheDarkNightwing@reddit
I love Steven Wilson.
batsofburden@reddit
I've fantasized about SW working with Jimmy from the Pumpkins, but Idk how that would ever happen.
NopeRope13@reddit
I haven’t thought about this album in a while. But I did tonight, tonight.
wigandmerkin@reddit
I want to upvote this 10000000x
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
I got this Christmas morning 1996.
therealpopkiller@reddit
A year after it came out?
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
It was 95. Damnit, I am getting old. I would have been too excited about it to wait a year. That said, I wasn't a huge Pumpkins fan. More casual. My true favorite was Tori Amos, but I didn't get into HER until 96. Gosh I feel super old now. 😂😂
garbagebailkid@reddit
Why would you feel old? 1996 was just 6 years ago
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
I know, right? I guess I got confused about time!
therealpopkiller@reddit
I feel like I also got it for Christmas that year but I was a huge Pumpkins fan and can’t imagine waiting 2 months without buying it. But I also can’t imagine having the money to buy it so maybe I did? I do know I got The Aeroplane Flies High box set for Christmas the next year. Damn now i feel super nostalgic for all of this, Christmas included. Why does time move so fast/at all?
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
We had no idea it would go by so fast. People would tell us that it will, but we never believed them. I feel like those years, the 90s, were our last innocent days.
therealpopkiller@reddit
We have the unfortunate double shot of entering into adulthood at the same time the world changed irrevocably in multiple ways. Become an adult felt exactly like when my mom would pull my blanket off me on cold mornings bc I wouldn’t get up and get ready for school. It’s no surprise that I’ve been retreating further into the entertainment of my youth, music especially. Why would I want to be an active participant in (gestures broadly) this?
Fit-Cable1547@reddit
Boxing Day for me at Future Shop in Medicine Hat Alberta. Crazy that buying a CD can have that kind of lasting memory--definitely can't get that from streaming or downloading something.
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
You really can't!
AnonThrowaway998877@reddit
Same. Listened to it in my Discman all the way to my Grandma's house, in my mom's Ford Aerostar, later that day. One of those perfect childhood memories.
blue_trauma@reddit
Same, on cassette.
amwoooo@reddit
I listened to that last week. The box set of b-sides was my fav in early high dchool
Coyote_Roadrunna@reddit (OP)
Aeroplane Flies High is an amazing compilation. Lots of nostalgia.
_TheHalf-BloodPrince@reddit
Yep
vhs1138@reddit
Honorable mention to The Fragile.
aqaba_is_over_there@reddit
I'm a much bigger NIN fan and I'll still put this at #2 behind Mellon Collie.
IMHO Mellon Collie was better than it's predecessor where as The Downward Spiral is superior to The Fragile.
Smashing Pumpkins where a bit more mainstream and accessable than NIN. I think that tilts the impact that Mellon Collie had to be more significant.
pcells@reddit
Nope. Siamese dream is by far the best pumpkins album. Respectfully. But no.
Diligent_Bath_9283@reddit
With you man.
rawboudin@reddit
I could listen to MCAIS with my parents even. It was just, I don't know, very melancholic (lol), like those times were. I often think back as to how much the music we listened too was sang by deeply unhappy people. There are songs on this album that were both very hard and soft and sad.
Anyway, I didn't think we could drivel on at my age lol.
adiosmith@reddit
The Fragile is #1 for me
Message_10@reddit
Same. It's funny--the older I get, the more I like NIN and whatever it is that Rezor is doing. He's a tremendous talent.
chrisacip@reddit
Join us on r/nin :)
Message_10@reddit
Oh nice! Just joined! Didn't even think of it, lol.
Just saw "I'm Afraid of Americans" on the sub--NICE
chrisacip@reddit
Yeah, it's one of the cooler subs I'm on. Always good vibes.
lu5ty@reddit
Funny. The older i get the harder it is to listen to nin
Marswhalbaconattor@reddit
Can’t wait for the new tron ares soundtrack
OnoALT@reddit
Same, but this is probably number 2.
Old-Constant4411@reddit
One of the best albums ever made.
NeverBeNormalnbn@reddit
Infinite Sadness has more iconic songs and that barely puts it over Fragile to me. Both are masterpieces.
vhs1138@reddit
Why even chose? Both are so incredible.
chrisacip@reddit
Honorable mention? First place IMO.
vhs1138@reddit
Fair and true. W take.
goldenrule117@reddit
Nice username. NIN and VHS are my two biggest obsessions.
vhs1138@reddit
Thanks it’s a combo of my fav analog format and the movie “THX 1138”.
goldenrule117@reddit
Oh damn, I can't believe I didn't catch the 1138. I just bought an original Warner clamshell THX 1138 a few months ago too, lol.
vhs1138@reddit
You fancy.
chefriley76@reddit
I don't think it deserves honorable mention. It deserves first place, dammit. Best album of the 90s.
Mtndrums@reddit
Great album, but too empty in spots. Trent's writers block when working on this has been well noted.
ChildObstacle@reddit
Man this is certainly a take. Can’t disagree with it enough though! I’ve never once felt that way listening to it.
Personally The Fragile is the greatest album from him from an art direction and concept. I won’t say I enjoy it more than TDS, probably both about equally, but the complexity of the songs, compared to TDS, is so impressive to me.
And not complexity for complexity’s sake, but for the overall vision. He’s an architect on this album, spinning up archways and flying buttresses.
An absolutely amazing piece of work. I take this as his magnum opus.
Acceptable-Moose-989@reddit
hard disagree. that was the beginning of my gradual loss of interest in NIN.
Redditsaves2020@reddit
TDS and Fragile had some great stuff, but I still found myself going back to Pretty Hate Machine for the full expirience
Acceptable-Moose-989@reddit
pretty hate machine gives me super teenage-edgelord vibes these days. hell, most of Trent's work does, honestly. i think broken is my personal favorite though, with fixed as a next runner up, oddly enough. controversial opinion on fixed, i know, but i likes what i likes.
Redditsaves2020@reddit
So...listening to NIN on repeat won’t secretly summon Angelina Jolie to my desk to tell me I’m the office sniper prodigy of legend, and I shouldn’t expect a custom handgun or curving bullets anytime soon? ; )
TheHeinousMelvins@reddit
Y’all went to Wanted but I first went to Tomb Raider soundtrack with the soundtrack only single “Deep”
Acceptable-Moose-989@reddit
oh man, i had forgotten about that movie, thought it was the coolest shit when it came out though. about a decade later than the albums we've been discussing too.
Redditsaves2020@reddit
I did step forward in time with this one, and you were spot on with the reference.
NINs "Every Day Is Exactly the Same", from from their 2005 album With Teeth ended up being on the sound track for the movie "Wanted" and a popular music video. Movie was pretty fun for the time, cool concept for sure.
Mtndrums@reddit
Trent's talked about his writer's block with lyrics while working on the album. That's why TDS is still a superior album.
PyramidicContainment@reddit
I spent a long time collecting all the halos back in the 90's/00's, so I say this with all due respect - Trent has never been a great lyricist.
Love both but I would definitely pick the Fragile if I had to choose one, desert island style. (And I would be sad cause I'd still want to hear Reptile)
C0SM1C-CADAVER@reddit
Lol. The "empty" songs you reference, I assume to be the ones "without" lyrics? Those are literally the most popular songs on the fragile from a "visibility" and arguably monetary standpoint. They were in countless movie trailers and soundtracks and led to Ghosts I-IV, ANOTHER entire double album with no lyrics that were in even more forms of media than the fragile ones and led to twenty years of complete soundtracks being made that are mostly "empty in spots".
squashmaster@reddit
Left is 100% perfect. Right isn't quite as good, but no double album ever made is 100%, even Mellon Collie.
Sharessa84@reddit
Definitely my favorite. I was getting into NIN at the time it came out and I was obsessed. NIN was my favorite band through high school. I got to see them on the Fragility tour and it was awesome.
biggiepants@reddit
At the time I would have rated The Downward Spiral and Further Down the Spiral above it.
HortonHearsTheWho@reddit
I wasn’t really into NIN but have been listening to this album a bit in recent months and really, really dig it.
mrkaczor@reddit
Just bought LP as a gift
mahTV@reddit
I'm glad I hit this before I commented. Probably not as commercially lauded, but that album was the legit background track to 2001 for me. I got there a year after release, but damn it resonated. Reznorated. Whatever.
C0SM1C-CADAVER@reddit
Fragile beats this hands down for me, but the genres are a little different.
syracTheEnforcer@reddit
Fragile is definitely better.
LuisMataPop@reddit
Not even as honorable mention, The Fragile is NIN's peak, a decade, rock and modern music in general masterpiece
QSlade@reddit
Absolutely takes the top spot for me hands down
iduro@reddit
Incredible piece of work. #1 for me!
Johnnysurfin@reddit
Still have my my Kiss Alive 2 LP
EffectNo1899@reddit
I'm 38 and this has been my favorite album since it came out. But never saw live in 90s. Saw them last year in charolette with Interpol and it was wonderful
Pretty_Indication_12@reddit
I listen to SP weekly still.
NostalgicTX@reddit
Although not technically a double album. Use your illusion 1/2 are up there too
badger2000@reddit
Honestly, way more iconic than Melancholy IMO.
garbagebailkid@reddit
You're probably right, but Illusion wasn't buried under 18 hours a day of "Kiss From a Rose" and "You Outta Know" on the radio like Melon Collie was.
badger2000@reddit
Fair. But it was also, to some degree, on different stations and programming slots on MTV. No one was playing Seal on Headbangers's Ball. Different areas of crossover.
NostalgicTX@reddit
Agreed
Lebowski304@reddit
November Rain is the gold standard for 90’s rock ballad, but I like 2 as an album. Estranged is probably my favorite song of theirs
SilikonBurn@reddit
Estranged > November Rain, IMO.
NostalgicTX@reddit
Same!! 2 is a no skip for sure. 1 has some skips for sure. Agree 100% with Estranged opinion. Solos on that one gimme goosebumps still
MagnumPIsMoustache@reddit
Wait, you guys don’t call them the blue and red albums?
NostalgicTX@reddit
Nah I haven’t heard them called that until now personally. I don’t hate it! I usually refer to them as illusion 1 or 2
NickAndHisGuitar@reddit
The Use Your Illusion tour with Soundgarden supporting was my first big rock concert. Such an amazing memory.
tq-dip@reddit
Wu Tang Forever was pretty good too
torino_nera@reddit
2pac and Notorious BIG had double albums too
josiah_mac@reddit
They weren't great tho
damonmorin@reddit
Relevant (and true) opening line too: “Reunited, double LP, world excited…”
YoMommaBack@reddit
Exactly what I was thinking! Triumph still gets played at least once a month and it still goes so hard.
ragewu@reddit
Came to make sure this was said. Thank you
standuphilospher@reddit
Agreed all eyez is the first double album I think of from the 90s
jayteazer@reddit
And All Eyez on Me
sactownbwoy@reddit
And if I remember correctly this album, Wu Tang Forever, had a fun little game if you put the disc into a computer. I think you ended up in a studio or something like that.
murderedbyvirgo@reddit
Also Speakerboxx/The Love Below is still a hit
asilentflute@reddit
Wu Tang Forever had more to do with the future of where pop music was headed, I will say that much.
grumblewolf@reddit
Came here to say this- nothing like it before or since. Top notch hip hop.
philouza_stein@reddit
What I came to say. Oddly I had both OPs album and forever. Only one of them has stayed in my rotation for the past 20+ years and it ain't Billy corgin.
newsflashjackass@reddit
A little Infinite Sadness goes a long way.
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
Agreed. This album is amazing, but too angsty for me to listen to often, in my 40s.
-piso_mojado-@reddit
I was in the the yard with a leaf blower for like 6 hours on Saturday. I listened to both all the way through (among some other classics)
EmeraldLounge@reddit
A groundbreaking release for the entire industry, nevermind just rap.
It's one of the most notable double LPs in the history of music. Rap can't ascend to what it is in the mainstream today without that release. It opened people's minds to an entire genre
New-Bowler-8915@reddit
Wu Tang is for the children though. This one not so much.
Da_Dush_818@reddit
That and All Eyez On Me.
Hard pass on Smashing Pumpkins over Pac
RadDad166@reddit
Yep. It will stand up to anything in the 90s.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
I'm with you OP. Iconic album and really a nod back to the kinds of concept double LPs that bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin put out in the 70's and 80's.
Lots of commenters taking about other double albums but those are all doubleheader releases not whole cohesive concept albums.
CptnMayo@reddit
See, this is my favorite album, absolutely my quintessential inspiration for my style.
I didn't understand the concept, especially when I was 15. I still honestly think it's quite vague.
But the talent, the tone, the lyrics, the guitar, it's perfect. Nothing in this world is perfect. This is perfect.
Gina_the_Alien@reddit
Fun fact: The Smashing Pumpkins wanted Jellybelly to be the lead signal from MCIS but the record company nixed it.
CptnMayo@reddit
Oh I had completely forgotten about that. How many singles came off of that album?
Zero BWBW 33 1979 Tonight, tonight
That's 5 singles, man, that's insane
amayain@reddit
And the b-sides were good enough to warrant their own release
garbagebailkid@reddit
Marquis in Spades is still one of my favorite songs ever
amayain@reddit
Great track. Set the Ray to Jerry is one of my favorites.
Sea-Dog-6042@reddit
Muzzle was also a radio promo that got plenty of airplay 👍
_shaftpunk@reddit
One pet peeve of mine is comparing 90s double CDs to 60s and 70s double LPs. Mellon Collie is like 50 minutes longer than Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. If it had been released in the vinyl age it would be a TRIPLE album. Filling up two CDs is way different than filling up two vinyl LPs.
RGVHound@reddit
I'm not sure about the 70s comparison either. Every track on MCIS sounds like it could only come from the 90s... even "1979"!
_1JackMove@reddit
So crazy to look back on that time period and think that the late 70s was only about 15 or so years before that era. We're now almost double the years from the time that album was released. Crazy to think about. It both does and doesn't feel like yesterday.
Spiritual-Top4267@reddit
Sadly there's like a whole other generation-on-generation layer of double nostalgia when you see some like 23 year old listening to that today. Like "bruh, I wish I was there when this track dropped".
Sadly cuz I'm old.
theMethod@reddit
It was a triple LP when it was released, and they had to rearrange the track list to fit it on 3. That’s why the reissue with the correct running order is on 4 LPs!
_shaftpunk@reddit
Thanks for that! Never knew that. So then if we’re comparing it to classics we should hold it up against The Clash’s Sandinista.
Minimum-Flannel@reddit
You’re a presumptuous queen
Falco_impersonator@reddit
What's really impressive is that Mellon Collie doesn't feel like it has anywhere near the filler that Sandinista does. And I really like Sandinista.
_shaftpunk@reddit
100%. I love Sandinista and London Calling. That era of the Clash was insane. But yeah, definitely some extra padding on Sandinista, haha.
Snoo-25142@reddit
Sandinista rocks.....
Tacokenzo@reddit
Love both albums. Watch Apocalypse Now and then listen to Charlie Don’t Surf.
Just_passing_by_67@reddit
Sandinista is such an amazing album.
newsflashjackass@reddit
Just try to find something comparable to The Flaming Lips' Zaireeka.
percypersimmon@reddit
In college I got four of my friends with cars to BLAST Zaireeka in an empty level of a parking garage.
It ruled.
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
Goddamit I should have done that! Sounds amazing. I managed it at home with an iPod, my stereo and a couple of borrowed CD boomboxes. It was still pretty cool.
dufflebag7@reddit
Check out the Magnetic Field’s 69 Love songs. Probably the most famous track is the Book of Love, which was covered by Peter Gabriel. Interesting triple album.
_shaftpunk@reddit
Reno Dakota is my favorite. Pops into my head all the time.
disinformationtheory@reddit
I don't have the vinyl, but I like to listen to it in the triple LP order sometimes.
theMethod@reddit
The original pressing is a grail for me - both because of the tracklist/extra tracks and as an SP collector. I love the different take on the running order and the Infinite Sadness track.
The reissue is super nice though, even without the two bonus tracks.
pantstoaknifefight2@reddit
Hey SP collector -- I have a YouTube music subscription and can't find some of their albums (or Zwan). Any idea why they don't have all their albums online?
theMethod@reddit
Gish through Machina I are streaming through all the major services, including the deluxe remasters of the first 4 studio albums and 2 b-side collections. Oceania through Aghori Mhori Mei are also on those services.
Machina II has been available for free download on archive.org for a long time and there are fan remasters on YouTube as well.
Zeitgeist, American Gothic, and Machina II are the official releases missing from the major streams, as well as Zwan and TheFutureEmbrace. Hoping to see Zeitgeist, Zwan, and TFE coming soon.
Both of Billy’s recent solo efforts are also streaming - Ogilala and Cotillions.
I’m not subscribed to YouTube Music, but would assume they mirror Spotify and Apple Music. Sorry if there are gaps, but you should be able to find most stuff!
pantstoaknifefight2@reddit
Thanks so much!
Yeah, it's Zeitgeist and some sort of Kaleidoscooic Teardrop that I downloaded as an MP3 sometime in 2010 or so that I can't find. Heard about the Machina 2 but couldn't find any never heard of The Future Embrace.
I've got some listening to do!
theMethod@reddit
Teargarden by Kaleidoscope is pretty fragmented. There’s a chance you could find a fan playlist on YouTube, or you can track down the 2 physical releases (part 1 is a 7” and CD, part 2 is a 12”).
Chalupa_Dad@reddit
It's a beautiful reissue too
msondo@reddit
Even more insane are all of the outtakes and b-sides. There was a five EP box set released just after Mellon Collie with several songs that could have been another album, including a 23 minute track called Pistachio Medley that had clips from over 50 songs that were not released previously but could have easily filled a couple of other albums.
Medical_Slide9245@reddit
Fleetwood Mac song Silver Springs was never released on an album because they couldn't fit it on Rumors. But it is on the CD.
ThomasSirveaux@reddit
One example is The Cure, who released a double album in 1987 ("Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me") which was able to fit on a single CD by taking out the song "Hey You!"
Their next album, "Disintegration" in 1989, was released on a single CD but they had to take out the tracks "Last Dance" and "Homesick" in order to fit it on one vinyl record. They later re-released it on two records in order to include the full track list.
But "Kiss Me" is considered a double album and "Disintegration" is not. I think it's interesting because "Kiss Me" was released during a time when vinyl was the default format, and "Disintegration", although released two years later, was during a time when the CD was beginning to be thought of as the default format.
_shaftpunk@reddit
Good examples. Great albums. Yeah, maybe it’s because I still collect vinyl, but I still feel like a single LP is the ideal length for an album. If an artist has a lot of material and feels like they have a statement to make, then a double LP is cool, but the CD era was full of bloated albums with tons of filler that just used up the entire disc for no reason. And now with streaming being the main way most people listen, none of it matters anymore I guess. I think Pearl Jam are a good example of a band that still thought about vinyl in the 90s. Their albums on vinyl feel like they have definitive side a and side b beginnings and endings. To my ears at least.
ThomasSirveaux@reddit
That's interesting. I actually never have listened to vinyl; I started getting into music in the early 90s and CDs were already the thing by then. I love a long album, and quite a few of my favorite albums are double albums (like the Beatles White Album, Mellon Collie, The Fragile, Kiss Me, The Wall etc). I love the feeling of reaching the end of the first disc, feeling like the end of "act one," then putting on the next disc and getting ready for "act two." I wonder if I would have liked the feeling of flipping over a vinyl record for that reason, lol.
pixelssauce@reddit
Yes, albums having a part 1 and part 2, even on shorter releases, is amazing. Especially older albums that were originally sequences for vinyl, you can tell they put thought into which tracks would close and open each side. Sometimes while streaming an album I'll check the vinyl tracklist and pause when the album flips, go smoke a bowl or something, then settle in for side 2 lol
pantstoaknifefight2@reddit
"Hello CD listeners..." --Tom Petty
theclassicgoodguy@reddit
Also let's not forget all the b-sides they published with their singles. Those alone would make at least another CD! They made a box set out of them, the aeroplane flies high.
ZealousidealSea2034@reddit
They would have likely edited the songs down to fit a double disc.
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
It pissed me off back in the day when, as a teenager, I realized that the Wall would have fit on one CD, but it had originally been a double album on vinyl, so it was the same on CD. And back then a double CD cost a shit load of money. I think my copy was like $29 at a mall in Atlanta in maybe 1999.
ElleTea14@reddit
I loved this album. So many hours of play and I saw them twice in concert on this tour.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Nice! I didn’t see them until the final tour before the first breakup in 2000. Jimmy chamberlain had just come back to the band.
Where’d you see them?
AliveInTheFuture@reddit
1996, Seattle. Kenny Aronoff on drums while Chamberlain was in rehab. Pretty good show, but honestly, Billy’s voice isn’t great live and there’s a lot of layered guitar in the studio mix, which often doesn’t translate well to live performance. Still, loved it.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
That's a good observation. I saw Billy with Zwan in the early 2000s and felt like a lot of his sound was missing. He is a studio genius though
UbermachoGuy@reddit
Medical_Slide9245@reddit
Outcast's The Love Below & Speakerboxxx is one of the best double albums. Two very different albums.
Melancholy and the infinite sadness cd was the key cd for my kickass car stereo. I could never remember if it was the blue or red CD. I guarantee the fuckers that stole it never figured that out.
LedRaptor@reddit
I think OP is me. I was nostalgically listening to songs from this album a few days ago.
And yes, thru the eyes of ruby is my favorite. I love how it comes right after tales of a scorched earth, which is super heavy.
The art work and music videos for this album were really cool too. I don’t have the original CD case anymore but I do have the discs in a CD book.
zero, jelly belly, bullet with butterfly wings, muzzle, where boys fear to tread, 1979, tonight tonight…..there are so many good songs on this album.
This album instantly transports me to the 90s.
The_Lapsed_Pacifist@reddit
Muzzle is possibly my favourite Pumpkins song. Aside from Slunk.
amayain@reddit
Oooh, Slunk is a good pick. Glynis is probably my favorite deeper cut of theirs.
GrabsJoker@reddit
It was, until The Fragile came put in 99. That shit destroyed melancholy
AcceptableAnswer4423@reddit
Mellon Collie is the tops, best song being Porcelina of the Vast Oceans. Daydream Nation is also impressive!

I’m on the young end of Xennial, but Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast is up there too.

Usher was not on Get Low. His song was Yeah which also had Lil Jon
330in513@reddit
Ok. I think I’ve combined those songs mentally. lol.
granmadonna@reddit
It came out in 2003 and is much more Millenial than Xennial.
sweatynachos@reddit
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is the strangest, most difficult to listen to CD(s) I have ever heard. then hey ya comes on like a break in the storm, then its right back to mucking through the swamp of nonsense until you get to the flowers smell like poo poo song. its still on rotation in my pickup but passengers never enjoy it
NYGiants181@reddit
I love OutKast and hated that album. So commercial and pop trash. I know it’s their biggest album but it def isn’t even in the top 6 of their best.
dak4f2@reddit
Me too. I was too young for the Smashing Pumpkins but Oatkast is fantastic.

Sure, but they came as a double album.

Oh man, my best friend (who unfortunately passed a couple years ago... STAY UP TO DATE ON YOUR MEDICAL CHECKUPS, FELLOW XENNIALS) had a summer internship in the city I had moved to for College.
He bought Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and we just jammed out to that for an entire summer. Probably my favorite memory of my very early 20s.

OutKast’s 5th best album and it still deserves every ounce of praise it receives.
itorrey@reddit
1979 is such a perfect song. I just did the math though and that song if released today would be called 2008 and now my back and knees hurt.
RL_NeilsPipesofsteel@reddit
That’s like if Dazed and Confused came out today, it would be set in 2007.
_1JackMove@reddit
Quiet, you! Don't remind me of my decrepitude.
sskylar@reddit
💀
a_bdgr@reddit
I wonder if Gen Z sees that date with the same kind of nostalgia that we see 1979. It was a whole different world for me in the 90s. People had completely different ideas, there were a whole lot technological advancements but more importantly political ideologies and global, serious youth cultures separating the worlds of 1979 and 1996. Are those also visible for those born in the 2000s? Cause 2008 does look a whole lot like 2024 to me.
_1JackMove@reddit
My son is a senior in high school currently. The major difference from his generation and my own is that they don't have subcultures to feel identified with like we did in my time. Everything is mashed together and everyone likes everything. Nothing stands out to them. I'm assuming it has everything to do with everything being at their fingertips at the drop of a hat. We worked for our music and films back then and we cherished them more because of it. As an old punk rocker, I can't get with that new concept lol. God I sound like my dad lol.
kitterkatty@reddit
It is really that far away. Btc wasn’t much of a thing, memes were just starting, tinder didn’t exist. Fb was barely past college only. And all the stores were still around. Not very many people ordered online. I didn’t have a smartphone yet but that seemed kinda normal. Razrs were 2004.
a_bdgr@reddit
The funny thing is, I remember all these things of course. They don’t carry any significant meaning for me, though. By the 2000s we were in our twenties and our identities had already been formed so little things like the phones we used were largely unimportant. Actually I didn’t have contact with a big part of the things you just mentioned. What strikes me when comparing the 2000s with the 80s and 90s is a seeming lack of youth cultures. It was very important to us whether we were a Raver or a Grunge person. Those were completely different worlds that were only loosely connected by school. I didn’t see that level of existential subcultures in the 2000s. But I wonder whether that is a question of perception rather than a lack of serious youth cultures.
kitterkatty@reddit
Oh there definitely were, just like the 90s. :) Scene and kpop and goth. The directioners vs army. G note. The rise of genders and furries.
I’m a perpetual 16yo lol kind of broken, at that age forever.
a_bdgr@reddit
Awesome, I know some of those words. :D And yet I thought I’m not that old and detached from the generation following ours.
kitterkatty@reddit
I actually think I’m out of the loop now too. I think all of that was about 15 years ago. Not totally sure what it is now. Might be inbetween things. It’s kind of a mech era. Hard edges, throwback to the heroin chic of the 90s. With some pastel anime on the side. Looking like either a roid machine or a dominatrix lol surprise in pastel platform boots. Escapism lol https://youtu.be/AVGWtbcHVb8
Soundjam8800@reddit
I feel like there were such huge cultural changes between each of the decades leading up to the turn of the millennium, so they felt incredibly distinct. Since 2000 we've had huge technological changes each decade, but they feel culturally broadly the same. That's not to say we haven't had huge social and political changes even in the past 5 years, but at least to me the day-to-day world of 2004 feels similar enough to the world of 2024 in a way 1964 and 1984 never would have.
zillionaire_@reddit
I think about this a lot and I appreciate that you put it into words
ComicOzzy@reddit
In 1993 I was a high school senior, driving a car as old as I was, listening to Kashmir over and over on a cassette tape where I recorded it over and over because we didn't have "repeat" back then.
pixelssauce@reddit
I think when you're younger you see the differences more clearly. I'm younger (lurking here because I love the Pumpkins) and was a teen in 2008.. it was the cusp of the smartphone era where the rich kids had the new iPhone but the rest of us were still on flip phones haha. And that changes everything, we still needed to look up (or print off!) a map before we headed out, a camera was a separate device you carried, we were still renting movies, you get the picture. Back then it was still possible to "unplug".
Politics felt different, it was still sharply divided but wasn't the shitshow fueled by social media it is now. Culture has shifted too.. back then it was acceptable and normal to be wildly homophobic and transphobic, not so much with today's youth. As a queer person, that's been one of the starkest changes to me.
So not gen z, but closer to a zillenial and looking back at 2008 it's both nostalgia and a sense of being glad we've moved on from that era
karma_made_me_do_eet@reddit
When it was released people born in 1979 were mostly 16 years old.. hit different for me because it was the first time I can remember a band kind of giving a nod to us future xennials.

dystopika@reddit
Young Gen-X checking in - GNR were the first band I got seriously into and UYI I & II were such a big deal for me. It's fascinating to me, seeing video footage of people buying those albums at midnight releases. That whole world is gone.
neurovish@reddit
Yeah, I don’t recall Melon Collie having the same effect. There were like 4 or 5 huge Smashing Pumpkins fans I knew, but outside of them it was a non-event. Their world revolved around it though.
Ari2079@reddit
Same experience here
marcusrex70@reddit
What a cool video. The record shop owner talking at the end too. Man…
DreadSocialistOrwell@reddit
It was hugely marketed.
The tie-in with Terminator 2 was a major kick-off for the album.
Then, Don't Cry, Estranged and November Rain (which, tbf, was a pretty great video) were also huge hits that MTV caned for months.
The release schedule of videos / singles for that album was from 1991 to early 1994, which gave it a staying power in music land.
Runningoutofideas_81@reddit
I always had a soft spot for Estranged. I think it’s aged better than the others.
pug_fugly_moe@reddit

Runningoutofideas_81@reddit

GhostingTheInterweb@reddit

marcusrex70@reddit
I remember getting the tapes and bringing in the inserts into assembly one day we passed around the lyrics because they had such bad words. The teachers had to take them away.
popculturenrd@reddit
November Rain — and its video — were epic.
thesaddestpanda@reddit
This depends on a lot of things. This album more or less launched grunge, as its excess got so much people were sick of it. So for the grunge crowd, this album was the last 'cock rock' nonsense straw that broke the camels back. I know of no one who talks about it or listens to it, yet grunge is talked about hugely today.
veringer@reddit
This was my first thought. I was 11 when it was released and 12 before it kinda reached peak. I remember hearing "November Rain" a lot at the community pool the summer of 1992. I was old enough to love Nirvana, and sense the GNR was kinda yesterday's news, but still cool.
TheHuffKy@reddit
Still LOVE that album.
Choice_Student4910@reddit
I just got this from my local record shop for $4. Hadn’t heard any other songs except for the 4 I’ve heard before. It is a pretty cohesive album, probably a magnum opus for the band.

As far as rock goes, I'd agree. MCIS is 9x platinum and is beloved by both Gen X and Millennials, making it the ideal candidate to represent rock double albums for Xennials.
The Fragile didn't have the same impact, even if I think its a better album, and imo Guns N Roses is pure Gen X (and Appetite is probably more iconic as far as GnR releases go).
AwkwardFactor84@reddit
It's a good one. Wu Tang forever too though
Feral_Expedition@reddit

FoolishDog1117@reddit
Mellon Collie is probably the most iconic but number two is probably Nine Inch Nails - the Fragile.

Notorious, Life After Death is definitely in the running. Some of us thought Smashing Pumpkins went slowly downhill after Gish.
cats_catz_kats_katz@reddit
So many hours listening to this on repeat while playing Zelda: Link’s Awakening. What a time.
Ok-Water-358@reddit
Tupac's All Eyez on Me is pretty iconic for us too. California Love, 2 of America's Most Wanted, I Ain't Mad at Cha', How do you want it, Ambitions as a Ridah, etc

I guess it says something that I don't even like the Smashing Pumpkins, and I've never seen the back of this cd case, but I still knew exactly what it was from having seen other art from the album on t-shirts back in the day.
I always preferred older music. My favorite double albums were the Forest Gump Soundtrack and The Wall.
lousypompano@reddit
Finally found someone saying what it is. I know I've heard their songs but can't name any or think of any.
BoardwalkKnitter@reddit
I must be the only one who didn't recognize the back of the album. I own this album on CD.

TBH You're just cheating by mentioning The Wall, you can't just casually drop the GOAT in a generational setting mate. ;)
hornecat@reddit
Yeah, same. I’m sure I’m in the minority but I could not get into Smashing Pumpkins at all.
WitchesDew@reddit
I really liked a couple of their songs. But not enough to buy their albums.
lostinpjm@reddit
I never used to like them. Something about his voice just irritated the shit out of me. But them a friend of mine was talking about Mellon Collie etc and the way he talked about it made me want to give it another go all these years later. I've listened to it quite a few times over the last couple of months and have really grown to appreciate it. Not saying that everyone would, of course. I really like when I'm able to check back in on an album years later and appreciate it in a way that I wasn't able to before.
LaDoucheDeLaFromage@reddit
I love the Smashing Pumpkins, but they are most definitely not for everybody, and that's cool. Even just Corgan's voice is divisive.

I like the Smashing Pumpkins.
But I liked the first Beatles anthology a lot more. I still do, but I did, too.

Notorious BIG, Life After Death
Prize-Watch-2257@reddit
Look? It's iconic. But you can't downplay how impressive Use your Illusions was in record sales and just being everywhere when we were younger.
I'd much prefer SP over GnR but the older kids played Use your illusion relentlessly
aweraw@reddit
Yeah, it's unfortunate what a douche Billy Corgan chose to become

eastsidewiscompton@reddit
You’re not wrong but most people don’t think of it as 2 albums. They were marketed together, they were released at the same time, they were recorded in the same sessions. The idea at the time I remember hearing was they didn’t want to charge kids so much money for a double album, but that could just be a foggy memory.
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
That wouldn’t surprise me being that II included ‘Get In The Ring’ which is basically 5 1/2 minutes of Axl raging about magazines ripping off kids.
No_Zombie2021@reddit
So instead they charged kids for two single albums.
t0msie@reddit
This is probably my old brain making shit up, but I remember Axl in an interview saying the idea was that if I buy the yellow one and you buy the blue, we can just each copy the others to cassette...
No_Zombie2021@reddit
Eh, ok
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
Was the combined price more than what a double album would have gone for? It’s not like doubles were the same price as other albums. For the record I’m not defending Axl, the guy’s a huge piece of shit (or was at least) and he clearly didn’t care about ripping off their fans when he’d rage quit concerts or show up late/not at all.

Unpopular opinion: less would have been more. A lot of that should have been cut.
omgitsoop@reddit
It didn't used to be, but after seeing Billy do an acoustic show, Muzzle became my favorite song off this album
JDsCouch@reddit
You're not wrong, just too bad Billy Corgan went insane, and so I don't to listen to his music anymore.
Emotional_Daikon_763@reddit
Speaking as someone w/friends who knew & played shows with Corgan in the late ‘80s: he was apparently always a moody, competitive, vaguely paranoid Rock-Star-in-training type, & money/fame (i.e. outside approval) didn’t exactly tame those qualities. According to them, he was always kind of difficult/conspiratorial - the internet just allowed him to broadcast it more easily.
batsofburden@reddit
I'm fine if someone's into old school conspiracy theories, but Billy was & maybe still is, friendly with Alex Jones. Gotta draw the line at being friends with someone that evil.
Apprehensive_You2473@reddit

itorrey@reddit
Him guesting on InfoWars wasn't a great look
WitchesDew@reddit
Ew, really?
BostonBlackCat@reddit
One of my favorite albums growing up, but the Smashing Pumpkin's tour I saw for that album was hands down the worst concert I have ever seen. Billy Corgan insulted the audience throughout it, then for over half an hour they just were doing a random musical interlude that was what you'd expect at a jam band concert, but way more boring. A bunch of people walked out, and then Billy announce that it had been a "test" to see who their real fans were.
Like how much of a narcissistic asshole do you have to be by intentionally playing bad music to fans who paid to see you as some sort of loyalty test? If he'd had more charisma, Corgan absolutely would have started a personality cult a la Jared Leto.
Even before he "went insane," he was always a garbage human being. Speaking of which, Garbage opened for them at that tour and THEY were great and Shirley Manson was super appreciative to the crowd.
RecipeFunny2154@reddit
I dunno, things change. That was admittedly a long time ago.
I saw them a couple times recently and it seems like he's finally mellowed out. They sounded great, he joked with the audience, the other members were clearly having a great time. One of the amps blew out and they rolled with it.
Gizank@reddit
I saw them touring for Siamese Dream. I really liked that album and Gish. Their live show was awful. His voice is like having pieces of my skull removed without anesthesia.
StyxCoverBnd@reddit
I grew up in the Chicago area and I remember hearing that right when this album came out Smashing Pumpkins played at (I think the House of Blues) and Corgan announced that they were only playing songs from this album and to not scream for older songs because they weren't going to play them and it pissed a ton of people off.
BostonBlackCat@reddit
Honestly after that prolonged bad jam session nonsense, I would have been happy with them only playing songs on that album, just as long as they were actual songs.
TinaHitTheBreaks@reddit
I’m reading elsewhere he went full QAnon
Procrasturbating@reddit
He has a reputation as being a difficult person. I don’t want to be any meaner than that about it, but the guitar subs will be happy to fill you in at great length.
bootyhole-romancer@reddit
My thoughts exactly as soon as I saw this post
schwing710@reddit
He’s mellowed out quite a bit in recent years and takes himself much less seriously, ever since getting married and having children. It’s refreshing to see him be openly self-deprecating now.
denim_skirt@reddit
"Difficult" is so generous of you haha
Username_NullValue@reddit
He’s very full of himself, and he’s a perfectionist, but I’d say that’s also very typical of great artists. It’s an unfortunate side effect that ultimately tears apart the greatest bands.
postinganxiety@reddit
I made the mistake of doing mushrooms at one of his later concerts, maybe Zeitgeist? All I remember is he was wearing a black trench-coat and the music was terrible. To this day it’s the only bad trip I’ve ever had. I actually stopped doing psychedelics after that! Thanks, Billy.
Such a confusing artist because I really think so many of his songs are incredible and hold up.
krashe1313@reddit
Ha! I remember buying that at Sam Goody's too. Came with a free John Hiatt single cd, "Walk On"
the_matthman@reddit
So many of my friends in high school worshiped this album, so I went to their concert. They were quite possibly the worst band live I’ve ever seen, and I never listened to them again.
batsofburden@reddit
I've seen them 4 times live, 2 were amazing, 1 average and 1 awful, so not the most consistent.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
I saw them live when I was 17. Definitely the worst I’ve seen live. Even Ozzy very drunk at Ozzfest was way better. And he was stumbling all over, and slurring his lyrics lol
batsofburden@reddit
I've seen them 4 times live, 2 were amazing, 1 average and 1 awful, so not the most consistent.
the_matthman@reddit
I was 17 so it was probably the same tour. They played so poorly I couldn’t even recognize their hits. It was THAT bad. Then they just “jammed” for what seemed like hours for an encore. It was hell.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
They were definitely THAT bad. Those with me and around my group, saw a couple fights. That was more fascinating to the crowd lol
the_matthman@reddit
Based on your username may I ask if this was Minneapolis at Target Center?
MsBlondeViking@reddit
Good guess! I was in attendance at a block party, that was near First Ave and Target Center. They made a “surprise appearance” at the party. However I always thought it was planned as part of their tour, which is why they were in town lol. Must be the tour you went to?
the_matthman@reddit
Yeah, I was at the Target Center concert. It soured my opinion on the band permanently. If you can’t make your hits sound recognizable live then maybe you shouldn’t be touring.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
Definitely changed my opinion too. The best musicians don’t need a studio to sound good. I don’t expect live to sound the same as studio, but it should be recognizable. Which as you pointed out too, most their hits were not recognizable. Only Tonight Tonight wasn’t ruined, for me lol.
gorilla-ointment@reddit
That actually sounds kind of awesome
Fine-Slip-9437@reddit
The Ozzy shuffle was an iconic part of any Ozzfest. A close second would be whatever insane contraption he uses to blast the crowd with water. One year he had a big ass boom you sat on that blasted water.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
I didn’t mind it. Seems more a normal Ozzy really. But it was sad the amount of angry complaints in the crowd
DreadSocialistOrwell@reddit
Yeah, I left their concert early too. I just wasn't feeling it.
But at least it started off interesting. They opened with Tonight, Tonight and during the song someone threw a bottle of beer at D'arcy toward the end of the song and Corgin had a couple of people thrown out very publicly.
little_bird_vagabond@reddit
The infinite sadness tour was my first concert, Garbage opened. Was absolutely amazing.
batsofburden@reddit
Me too, even though I was pretty far in the back it was still amazing.

GNR use your illusion 1 and 2 RHCP Stadium Arcadium
Both are ahead of pumpkins for me. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great album and I’ve owned it for 20+ yrs but these are a lil better
popculturenrd@reddit
Stadium Arcadium is still one of my all-time favorites.
Hanifsefu@reddit
Honestly it's all about what set the mood and basically determined what would make it on the radio. GnR did that for a decade. Stadium Arcadium did it again for the 00s.
Rock radio was defined by what sounded good next to GnR and in the 00s rock radio was defined by what sounded good next to the Chili Peppers. Stadium Arcadium really sealed the deal for the 00s because it was a lot more mainstream rock friendly.
Smashing Pumpkins are good but a lot of their airtime came from the fact that they matched up well with the genre definers of their time.
CastleBeoWulf@reddit
I love this double album. Because of this album, I discovered siamese dreams. I also loved the box album.
I understand that everyone doesn't like Billy Corgan, but his music has always spoken to me.
batsofburden@reddit
the box album is so good too and crazy that it was all made in the same time period as mcis. too bad pretty much everything after adore has been a massive downgrade.
popculturenrd@reddit
For us non-angsty ’90s kids I'll offer The Notorious B.I.G.'s Life After Death.
Dfiggsmeister@reddit
Just saw them in concert last month. Great show with Green Day but it was weird seeing Billy Corgan and James Iha and none of the original band members. But it was awesome to see Gen Z rock out to it.
batsofburden@reddit
For me, yes, but only a small number of other people at my school were really into them.

I love this album. I had it on cassette and used to listen to it on my Walkman when my little brother and I mowed the lawn and did yard work when we were kids. He passed away over 10 years ago and since then I cry every time I hear Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

Man, this album was EVERYTHING to my pre-teen self. I remember being obsessed with the Tonight, Tonight music video and eventually buying the double CD in late '96/early '97 (probably got a Musicland giftcard for Christmas!)
A few months before I bought the CDs, My skater middle school boyfriend had written me a couple notes that contained the complete lyrics of "Beautiful" and "By Starlight". I didn't know what it was from, so I assumed he wrote a poem LOL! Then once I got the album and hear those songs, I realized where he got it from. Just one of those things that is forever burned into my memory. A sweet gesture from a sweet young boy who had good taste in music, who I'm still friends with to this day!

Half of it was very, very good, but Siamese Dream was still overall their best. (Shocking and unpopular opinion, I know!) I saw them play just before they blew up and it was the LOUDEST show I've ever been to

I agree. Siamese Dream was their best. I even like Gish better than Mellon Collie.
Orinocobro@reddit
This is my opinion of double albums on the whole. Edit, don't waste my time.
Honestly, I've never quite understood the adulation some folks have for Smashing Pumpkins. They're good, but I know people with SP tattoos who talk about them like Corgan is a visionary or something.

rednehb@reddit
My 17 year old just started discovering the deep cuts on this album :)
animesuxdix@reddit
The singles on this album were great but the a lot of the other songs on this record were ten times better than the singles. JellyBelly, an ode to no one, porcelina, where boys fear to tread, thru the eyes of Ruby, XYU. First CD I went to the store to buy.
This Double album is the most iconic, but the Fragile by NIN is way better.
Key-Performer-9364@reddit
XYU is a great song. And Porcelina of the Vast Ocean.
torino_nera@reddit
The songs they left off this album were better than most of the material on disc 2, imho. The entire Zero EP is made up of bangers and Aeroplane Flies High is one of their best songs ever
pissantz34@reddit
The Aeroplane Flies High box set is amazing. I burned a CD of all the b-sides from that box and it's right up there with my favorite SP albums.
Sillypugpugpugpug@reddit

torino_nera@reddit

Doing X-mas shopping, 1995 my brother asked me to help him pick out a cd for his girlfriend, I was 13-14 and I took the responsibility of this task to serious and had a hard time picking an album. I had no idea he was wanting me to actually pick out a CD I wanted. At that age I was into music comedy Weird Al and Adam Sandler. In the end I chose this album, as it was thoughtfully considered for his girlfriend. He then questioned me choice saying “Are you sure she would like this? Are you just picking something for yourself?”. I got upset because I really tried to make a thoughtful choice. Then he gets angry and says “never mind I was trying to get YOU a gift and was hoping you’d tell me what you wanted”…….. he bought that CD for her and she was pretty happy about getting it. I don’t remember what I got from him, only this CD. Lots of bad memories with him. This is a fitting story to match the title of the album. Never brought myself to give it a listen but I know the single/s.

I love you so much for posting this!
I’m currently 41, and this album singlehandedly changed the trajectory of my entire life.
I was into basketball in 1995, but when the Bullet With Butterfly Wings single was released on the radio, it stopped me in my tracks.
Music had never made me feel that way before, and I would sit by the radio and wait for it to come on so I could tape it off of Z100.
Within that short time of the single coming out and waiting until Christmas (I couldn’t afford to buy it), I listened to that tape so many damn times.
At one point, I accidentally hit the record button on my Walkman while mowing the lawn, ruining part of the recording, but I listened just the same.
When I finally listened to that double album, I had never felt so seen and heard with my feelings. These new teenage feelings finally had a soundtrack.
Jimmy, their drummer, inspired me to play the drums. Billy inspired me to write poetry. The music videos made me want to get into film.
Today, I’m a motion picture cameraman. Drumming gave me the rhythm (timing) I needed to operate, especially when I started making music videos. The poetic interpretation I need when reading scripts helps me with work, and I’m still a drummer.
That album gave me a purpose in life when I had none prior.

I love SP but I think the double album concept of the 90s failed. This album, GnR Illusions, and although released separately, Metallica’s Load/Reload albums all had great tracks to make an awesome single album each, but too much filler in these for me. I’m a big fan of all these bands and understand I may be in the minority with this view.

The iconic double album for me was a couple years later
The fragile - Nine Inch Nails
LengthinessFlashy309@reddit
Gonna be honest I was never really into the pumpkins, I identified as emo for a bit, segued into more of an 80s punk vibe soi think I fit the angsty teenager category I just really never liked most of the softer stuff my clique was into, and the few smashing pumpkin songs that played on the radio I just wasn't into.
Bullet with butterfly wings though, has gotten so overplayed It's started to turn my apathy towards the band into genuine distaste. I hate the repetition of the chorus, from a purely "what I like listening to" standpoint but I also kinda get the symbolism, if you're an angry rat in a cage all you could do is the same thing over and over.
They're a good band, I respect them as a musician myself, but I just don't really enjoy them.
CMDR_MaurySnails@reddit
Speak for yourself. Daydream Nation and Dirty were double LPs. Fuck Billy Corgan, guy's always been a piece of shit.
circ-u-la-ted@reddit
I mean those albums are both amazing but I don't think double LPs count for this one. Dirty, at least, was released on a single cassette tape. And xennials weren't really of a discerning age for the release of DN.
Coyote_Roadrunna@reddit (OP)
Big Sonic Youth fan myself (love Sister) and agree Billy is a known control freak. But no denying MCIS made a huge impression on my 15 year old self at the time. And Jimmy Chamberlain is an undeniably professional drummer.

Dawn to dusk, song 3. Yes please. Listened to this on my MD player a lot when delivering newspapers. As it was by bike I was done very fast with this kind of music in my ears.
What happened to this kind of music anyway? There are just a few artists making this kind of great music.

agoldprospector@reddit
Loved Siamese Dream, but this one passed me by. '94 was when punk kicked into high gear and it had energy and optimism that made music like the Pumkins feel grating and whiney to me by the time this album came out the next year.
Acceptable-Moose-989@reddit
you can't be serious with this statement.
agoldprospector@reddit
I'm serious. Punk had varying degrees of popularity in the 70's and 80's. But the revival in the 90's drove it much deeper into the mainstream.
1994 saw the release of Green Day - Dookie, Offspring - Smash, Rancid - Let's Go. All albums that had songs that got serious playtime on MTV and radio. Before that, hearing punk was rare for me in mainstream outlets and mostly limited to stuff like Ramones or The Clash, which were at that point long past their prime. This is part of what started displacing grunge and alternative in general. This lead to the growing popularity of stuff like NOFX and Bad Religion. Punk in Drublic came out in 1994 too, arguable NOFX's best album. Blink 182 came out of this era, but developed a bit later, but Chesire Cat was still released in 1995. This was punk at it's peak popularity since the early days, Dookie and Smash both outsold London Calling IIRC.
And then punk started getting displaced by horrible nu metal and emo by the early 2000's. 1994 was where it really started growing though, and a lot of bands from that era had their best releases in 94-96 IMO.
I'm curious, what do you disagree with about punk being kicked into high gear in 1994?
lu5ty@reddit
Green day and offspring are alt rock not punk
SlingingRopes@reddit
Strong disagree. Both bands were the literal backbone to the 90s pop punk/street punk explosion. The success of Smash fueled Epitaph Records throughout the 90’s and sales of Green Day’s earlier Lookout! Records releases fueled that labels success completely.
Nonsenseinabag@reddit
I still listen to Siamese Dream, never quite got into this one as much. Everyone but me seems to love 1979, but I'd rather have the buzzy guitars of Rocket and Today.
kronkarp@reddit
1979 is the poppy outlier that happened to get popular. Ignore it. Take XYU, Bodies, Fuck You or, for softer fuzz, Porcelina
fivemagicks@reddit

I got my license and hopped in a vehicle to drive by myself for the first time as a 16 year old, put on the seatbelt, 1979 happened to be playing on the radio. Loved that album.
agentoutlier@reddit
When I was kid/teenager in the 80s and 90s it seemed like everybody gatekeeped on music. It got to the point that I just kept my music preferences to myself (I was into electronic music). I would cringe when someone asked me what I liked.
I had to pretend to like so many bands (even went to concerts)... like Dave Matthews cause god forbid I decreed my dislike for them. BTW I'll take Smashing Pumpkins any day over DMB but I still to this day do not like most 90s bands.
Part of it was I just didn't have enough money to buy CDs and radio in my area sucked. So when I liked something it would take me forever to figure out the name etc. By the time I would figure out they were not really popular or not actually from the 90's.
When MP3s finally became a thing I just forgot most of the 90's stuff.
Anyway thanks for the post to remind myself to go revisit some smashing pumpkins without shame.

Probably going to get downvoted, but while I like tons of Pumpkins songs, this did not have enough songs to be a double album.
Most of the second disc especially is really weak. Grab 1979 and maybe Thirty Three off of disc two, swap them in for a couple of the weaker songs on disc one and you have a great album to listen to front to back.
The number of times I popped in disc two, listened to 1979, and then switched discs again was really high.
ArchitectVandelay@reddit
I’m not downvoting but I disagree that there’s nothing but those two songs on disc 2. Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, Tales of a Scorched Earth, X.Y.U. all rock as hard as the first disc. In the Arms of Sleep, Stumbeline and some of the songs afterward show how they’d evolve on Adore. If you didn’t like Adore, yeah there’s not much for you on the back half of disc 2. They released another double album’s with of B-sides just from the singles off MCIF. I think it was destined to be a double album and you could definitely create your own epic double from all the content they put out during this era.
Rob_Bligidy@reddit
Fuck That Noise! Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, Wu-Tang and Bone all had double albums that are, checks personal notes, preferable. Siamese Dream is great tho.

Man as much as I listened to Art of War back in the day I gotta say it had a lot of skips back then and has even more now. And they spent way too much time rappin about clones and all that. We already know you're superior to Twista and and Crucial Conflict, why you gotta go on and on about it?
egospiers@reddit

Uncle-Cake@reddit
I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but they could have left half the songs on the cutting room floor and made an even better single album. There's a lot of filler in there.
BlueLightJunction@reddit
I don't know about that lofty claim, but it has to be up there. I was in high school when this came out and remember running out to the mall the day it came out to snag a copy. Like there was something about getting the cd back in the day with the pull out booklet and the artwork and the thrill of having the physical product that I think you just don't get now with streaming. I adored the Smashing Pumpkins back then. This didn't quite hit the heights of "Siamese Dream" but it is an awesome album. This is a total sidebar story but I saw the Pumpkins at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1996 in the fall and I was there with a girlfriend. Our Lady Peace was sitting two rows in front of us and Raine Maida signed the top of my friend's breast with a black magic marker. LOL!

pwilk138@reddit
First CD I ever bought with my own money.
RLIwannaquit@reddit
I like it but mine is Wu Tang Forever
GardenKeep@reddit
I see Xennials are now over using the word “iconic” too…
GonnaGoFat@reddit
I remember this album so much. My father always complained that they brought out a double album at what he thought was still early in the pumpkins career.
I never had the album growing up. My brother did I actually didn’t give the full album a listen to until a few years ago. Listening to the whole thing you can feel the whole music style slowly change by the end and could tell they had some meaning behind it like trying to show us a bigger picture of something. I just can’t place my finger on what it was. But it was a fun ride regardless.

I was just wearing my Mellon Collie shirt yesterday. The build-up and release in Here is No Why still gives me goosebumps.

I got this for Christmas along with a shelf system. It was a good year

Wu Tang FOREVER
roopjm81@reddit
Bullet With Butterfly Wings changed me. I'm still obsessed with that song
VectorJones@reddit
I was much more about those earlier albums, to be honest. Not that this one was bad. I just kind of liked those earlier songs more. Also, tracks from this album got played to death. So much overplay. There are certain songs from this I just can't listen to anymore.
_Can_i_play_@reddit
I'm going to say "All Eyes on Me," this Smashing Pumpkins album had what, 4 good songs?
Crabbyrob@reddit
Unpopular opinion here apparently. I thought this album would've been better as a single not a double. I found it boring at times and not near as good as Siamese Dream. But, that's just me. I'm happy you enjoyed it!
Stsberi97@reddit
This is the double album that introduced me to double albums. My mom told me about all the classics that came before this when I brought it home thinking it was an original idea.
ReasonableRevenue678@reddit
That and 2pac, yes.
DBE113301@reddit
I wore out these two discs to the point that I needed to buy the album again.
churchylaphlegm@reddit
I wrote my college thesis on this amazing double album!
ILiveinashanty@reddit
While I do love this album, I still think Siamese Dream is their best.
literanch@reddit
Absolutely. Played these tapes to death back in the day.
I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn by Bright Eyes is probably #2 for me.
Higher_Perspectiva@reddit
More iconic than the Wutang double disc release? Idk
Far_Dragonfly_3748@reddit
I remember getting this album at a midnight release event at the local record store freshman yr in college. Waited and partied in line, it’s was awesome

Use Your Illusion 1 and 2, I said it.

Yup and their new album is also really good. Rinocerus is my fav track from the first album but mcis is deff there most iconic.
morsindutus@reddit
I had to convince my conservative Christian parents that they were Catholic so they'd let me buy it.
small___potatoes@reddit
Love this album and still spin the CDs regularly. I also think Thru the Eyes of Ruby is my favorite.
The_Goondocks@reddit
Fan of theirs since Gish. Siamese Dream is one of my favorite albums of all time. Melon Collie was a super hyped and a huge success, but to me there were only a couple of good songs on it aside from Tonight, Tonight. All downhill after that, imo.

Here is No Why
MsBlondeViking@reddit
This was good. But Biggies Life after Death had more songs I actually listened to.
UGoBoy@reddit
One of the few CDs I ended up selling. It had a lot of good songs, but felt so pretentious and bloated. I ended up ripping it to MP3, making a playlist of around 13 songs, and sold the disks to a friend who liked the bloat.
Deazul@reddit
But their first album was the only good one
P4yTheTrollToll@reddit
For some reason I thought this was a Pure Moods CD at first.
Earthworm_Ed@reddit
Double albums are always a testament to the ego and hubris of the lead singer, and Billy Corgan did not disappoint in those departments back then. If SP had strong management back in the 90s, they would have demanded that Darcy pull the needle out of her arm and/or the pipe out of her mouth, gotten her ass some singing lessons, then sang about a third of the songs of Mellon Collie, and Mellon Collie would have been like Dark Side of the Moon, still charting today.
tiltedslim@reddit
Most double albums could have been one really good album if the band had decided to trim the fat.
unknown1310P1@reddit
2pac All Eyez on Me is still banging!
Luna_Soma@reddit
My favorite album of all time. As you said, it was life changing.
My favorites were Tonight Tonight and Bodies
scottjones608@reddit
There are some great songs on this album—some real musical genius. 1979 is one of the best songs of the 90s! However, the album is really all over the place with so many styles of music and so many lyrical themes that it gives you whiplash trying to listen to it. It’s like Billy didn’t know which of 4 directions to take the band next and tried to do all 4 at the same time.
Also, I need to say that listening to this album now as an adult it’s obvious that Billy Corgan had some severe & untreated emotional/depressive issues. I also had the same issues as a 15-16 y/o around the time this album came out. I’m not saying this album caused them but it was a bit like throwing fuel on a fire.

Muzzle.
My favourite is still Siamese Dream and I have a SP vinyl collection that is mainly from the Singles soundtrack through to Pisces Iscariot. I had vinyls from the MCIS era but they were never worth much :P
My hometown back then had a cd/vhs store that would order you specialty vinyl from the UK if you asked for it. I waited too long to try to get the triple vinyl for this album and they couldn't get it and I'm kicking myself now :P

I purchased this double CD 3 different times. Each time i'd lose or have stolen on me the blue CD so at one point I had 3 copies of the pink one.

The second disk had so much filler on it, though. The last 5 or 6 tracks are not really good.

HeathenDreadnok@reddit
lol does it matter? I still liked those albums better and they all meant far more to me, as well as being far more artistically pleasing. No way in hell I would pay for the Smashing pumpkins.

My wife is a die-hard SP fan. 'Beautiful' was the song she walked down the aisle to at our wedding.
atari2600forever@reddit
This sub seems to really love this album, I personally feel that there's one album of good music with a lot of filler. I remember being disappointed by this when I bought it as I was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan.
I think Wu-Tang probably has the number #1 double album, lots of hits and those guys are still everywhere (RIP ODB).
Msheehan419@reddit
I loved “Stadium Arcadium” was great as well. They did that album because they knew technology was moving so fast they wouldn’t be able to put a double album out

I thought so, too. I was surprised to hear they are opening for Green Day and I only found out about it long after they played in my town. I like Green Day but I'm confused by the ranking.
