Amanda was 15-years-old when she died by suicide. She wasn't even a teenage girl yet when the 30-year-old man took a screenshot of her chest, uploaded it to the internet, and used it to blackmail her. Amanda was harassed by this man for years and bullied prior to this incident. The man who groomed her changed his name online, cyber-stalked her, and more. Amanda and her family tried to do what they could by moving, changing schools, and blocking the guy on social sites. Nothing changed. Amanda was bullied, beaten up, harassed, and misunderstood. This young girl had no one, but reached out for help because she needed somebody.
She was just a girl, who knows what kind of woman she would have grown into. Screw all these people bad mouthing her actions, she was a child! I'm sure many of you did dumb shit as a kid, and I bet you're glad your childhood mistakes didn't come back to haunt you.

However, we did not take the easy way out and kill ourselves because we could not handle the repercussions of our actions. She got bullied and no one deserves that, but there were plenty of other actions then cutting herself, alcohol, and drugs to get attention. She was selfish in the end because she didn't think of how her actions would affect the family. The family is getting the worst of the backlash of her suicide.

There are two sides to every story. This is what I hear from people who actually knew Amanda Todd (I've now seen public posts from three such people):
1.) she got naked on a public streaming site.
2.) resulted in stalking.
2.) cried out for help / attempted suicide.
3.) refused help after realizing the crying out got her attention.
4.) repeat from point 1, but with alcohol.
5.) friends finally realize she is being a "professional victim". Abandon her.
6.) Amanda Todd auto-darwinates.
She should never have been stalked or bullied in the first place, but she put herself back into that situation by CONTINUING to do drugs and post nude photos. Then went hey look at the cuts I made on my own arm in an online video. That, my friends, is the behavior of a professional victim.
I know a professional victim who is a lot like Amanda Todd. As a former friend of that person, I understand how difficult it is to maintain a friendship with someone who refuses help or good advice because they get so much personal attention by being a victim.

It does appear that she did it multiple times, and in streaming content. The girl obviously had self esteem issues, and I REALLY gotta ask where her parents were. I gotta admit, I would not have been friends with her. Then again, maybe if she had been friends with me, I could have talked her out of going to hook up with a guy she barley knows but knows he is in a relationship.
The thing I don't understand is why she was allowed to continue to make facebook pages every time she moved. She would not have been followed had she not continued to put it out there. If she didn't have friends, she didn't need a facebook. If she did have friends (probably not good ones because they didn't have an issue with her webcammin' it up) then she had some support somewhere and just continued to make poor choices.
It's frustrating. I would love to have been her friend if she really wanted to make changes. Really, her parents should have been there to set her straight.

I also didn't know she made multiple facebook accounts, but perhaps she assumed that after a few months or years things would die down and they'd stop following her? She did have major self-esteem issues, but her reasons for having them are pretty valid; this doesn't excuse her for attempting to have sex with someone with a girlfriend, but she was pretty desperate. I think I would've been her friend, even if she hadn't taken my advice, perhaps I'd be able to talk her out of suicide, and that's what a true friend would do.

I would agree with you, and maybe I grew up a little sheltered (I was a middle income kid in a high-income area) but I tend to think that she didn't handle the ridicule very well. By reading the one-sided article, it makes me wonder why the ridicule continued so deeply and for so long after the picture leaked. My theory is that she used it as an excuse to get into drugs and alcohol, alienated her close friends by doing so, became reclusive and obsessed with other peoples' opinions, became glued to facebook and reacted harshly to every criticism of her which would only serve to invite more criticism.
I know of half a dozen girls in my school who were 'violated' in the same way. They sent picture messages of themselves to guys and those scumbags showed the rest of the school, and it blew over in a couple of days and I have to think that it's because the girls didn't completely lose their shit about people seeing their bare chests.

I remember watching it in school. Something similar nearly happened at my school around the time, I think. I struggled with bullying in school, and I stillwater how to this day, people are so nasty.
I now have depression, anxiety, and ptsd. I also self-harm. But whenever I feel like ending it all, I always come back to this video.
Amanda has helped me and so many others. It was awful what happened to her. But we will always remember her and spread awareness.

You need to stop focusing on her being "bullied" and start seeing the big picture. She died because of the choices she made herself. Ya, maybe bullying did start it, but there are countless support groups/helplines for that (I live in Vancouver and I see it EVERYWHERE). Also, everyone knows that bullying isn't a one side thing, the victim ALWAYS have a choice/change to stop it, and she made her's, which is posting naked pictures/videos of herself. There are two sides to every story. This is what I hear from people who actually knew Amanda Todd (I've now seen public posts from three such people):
1.) she got naked on a public streaming site.
2.) resulted in stalking.
2.) cried out for help / attempted suicide.
3.) refused help after realizing the crying out got her attention.
4.) repeat from point 1, but with alcohol.
5.) friends finally realize she is being a "professional victim". Abandon her.
6.) Amanda Todd auto-darwinates.
She should never have been stalked or bullied in the first place, but she put herself back into that situation by CONTINUING to do drugs and post nude photos. Then went hey look at the cuts I made on my own arm in an online video. That, my friends, is the behavior of a professional victim.
I know a professional victim who is a lot like Amanda Todd. As a former friend of that person, I understand how difficult it is to maintain a friendship with someone who refuses help or good advice because they get so much personal attention by being a victim.
tl,dr: Moral of the Story? You can't help people who don't want to help themselves.

It does appear that she did it multiple times, and in streaming content. The girl obviously had self esteem issues, and I REALLY gotta ask where her parents were. I gotta admit, I would not have been friends with her. Then again, maybe if she had been friends with me, I could have talked her out of going to hook up with a guy she barley knows but knows he is in a relationship.
The thing I don't understand is why she was allowed to continue to make facebook pages every time she moved. She would not have been followed had she not continued to put it out there. If she didn't have friends, she didn't need a facebook. If she did have friends (probably not good ones because they didn't have an issue with her webcammin' it up) then she had some support somewhere and just continued to make poor choices.
It's frustrating. I would love to have been her friend if she really wanted to make changes. Really, her parents should have been there to set her straight.

Why is it that if she flashed multiple times, the only wide-spread picture out there was when she flashed at age 12? Was it that the ones she said later weren't spread to the public, or just too boring to spread fast enough? I also didn't know she made multiple facebook accounts, but perhaps she assumed that after a few months or years things would die down and they'd stop following her? She did have major self-esteem issues, but her reasons for having them are pretty valid; this doesn't excuse her for attempting to have sex with someone with a girlfriend, but she was pretty desperate. I think I would've been her friend, even if she hadn't taken my advice, perhaps I'd be able to talk her out of suicide, and that's what a true friend would do.

I am not saying she created multiple facebook pages, I'm just saying she continued to have a facebook which makes it extremely easy for mean little teenagers to find you. She should have laid off because that's how they found her and looked at her friends list and sent the pictures out again to people on her friends list. Once again, her parents should have intervened. Also, she had a boyfriend and best friends. She was not that alone. I would not have been friends with her because she does not seem like she was a very awesome person. Again, that is because she definitely had issues and I don't blame her, I'm just telling it like it is. I don't hang with the girls that continue to follow the same poor paths and continue getting the same results and have such a need for attention. There are PLENTY out there, have fun being friends with every one of them and sacrificing yourself.

I would agree with you, and maybe I grew up a little sheltered (I was a middle income kid in a high-income area) but I tend to think that she didn't handle the ridicule very well. By reading the one-sided article, it makes me wonder why the ridicule continued so deeply and for so long after the picture leaked. My theory is that she used it as an excuse to get into drugs and alcohol, alienated her close friends by doing so, became reclusive and obsessed with other peoples' opinions, became glued to facebook and reacted harshly to every criticism of her which would only serve to invite more criticism.
I know of half a dozen girls in my school who were 'violated' in the same way. They sent picture messages of themselves to guys and those scumbags showed the rest of the school, and it blew over in a couple of days and I have to think that it's because the girls didn't completely lose their shit about people seeing their bare chests.
It sucks that she did not have the coping skills to deal with this beforehand and it serves as a warning to kids who think that bullying can never be taken too far, but I don't believe that her ONLY mistake was flashing some dude on the internet several years prior to her suicide.

I'm glad to have lived in the environment, parents, and generation I did. I remember watching it in school. Something similar nearly happened at my school around the time, I think. I struggled with bullying in school, and I stillwater how to this day, people are so nasty.
I now have depression, anxiety, and ptsd. I also self-harm. But whenever I feel like ending it all, I always come back to this video.
Amanda has helped me and so many others. It was awful what happened to her. But we will always remember her and spread awareness.
