Just curious if anyone has attempted to use NODs while running one of these.
I don’t expect anything to really compete with a T2, but my Gen1 Romeo 5 is practically impossible to see through the glass while active aiming. I think because of a slight glass tint but not sure entirely.
Curious if anyone has tried with this.
geopede@reddit
If you can afford NODs, you probably aren’t buying $100 red dots.
solanu719@reddit
Tell that to someone like me: affording NODs (BNVD 931s) and buying $100 red dots.
Wouldn’t be able to afford NOD’s if I spent $900 on a T2.
geopede@reddit
There’s a difference between buying and affording. If $900 is significant, spending $5k+ on NODs is probably a bad financial decision.
solanu719@reddit
Thanks for providing me guidance on my finances, I greatly appreciate it. Surely you know priorities of others better than they do themselves.
geopede@reddit
Thanks for the detailed explanation, your logic makes sense considering your other hobbies.
I didn’t intend to offend someone thinking rationally, this sub is full of people racking up CC debt on shit they don’t need, I was too quick to assume you fell into that camp. My apologies.
solanu719@reddit
Sheesh bro, not common to see someone reconsider their argument online. Seriously good on you for that, must be a solid dude. I didn’t mean any disrespect either.
I definitely agree though. Some of the shit I’ve seen on r/nightvision can get kinda whacky as well. Sometimes people really have no idea how to spend money. Night vision is super cool but a slippery slope for people with bad financial tendencies, especially considering the somewhat rapid expansion of “cheaper” priced Chinese manufactured alternatives.
Have a beautiful rest of your day!
geopede@reddit
I’m a former pro athlete turned engineer, I will always admit responsibility for my mistakes. You can’t be a good teammate or a good engineer if you can’t admit you fucked up.
I hope you have a beautiful rest of your day as well. If you have time, I have been thinking of getting into night vision, but I don’t know where to start.
solanu719@reddit
Yeah dude hit me up, I can only give so much advice as (although I’ve had a lot of experience with night vision thru the military) I’m pretty new to the civilian world of NV. That said, I’ve put a decent amount of research into it if you need someone to talk to.
geopede@reddit
My main question is whether it makes more sense to start with NODs or thermal. After that, it’s where the point of diminishing returns hits for each one.
For an AR, I’d say the point of diminishing returns is BCM. I’d like to have the BCM of NODs or thermal. Not gucci, but not budget.
solanu719@reddit
Can’t really speak on specifics of thermal, but as with anything, it depends on your use case.
The biggest downside of thermal is its lack of battery capacity and its lack of ability to pick out specific identifying features. But of course, its primary use is identifying living targets from long distances.
The biggest downside of night vision is the requirement of some form of ambient light, or an illuminator if there is none. However, it is significantly easier to use for navigation (hiking), especially in a binocular form factor. There is also no latency, as opposed to thermal which generally will have some form until you get to the really high end stuff.
The benefits of one complements the downsides of the other.
That’s about the extent of my thermal knowledge lol. If you want to see, and navigate, in the dark: go night vision. If you want to see targets way the fuck out there: thermal.
Depending on your budget, generally the best “starting” options if you are of the opinion of “buy once cry once” are either an expensive monocular or cheap binocular.
That said, I am not entirely a believer of that mindset as I like to frequently switch around what I do, and use my experience with one thing to decide where I wanna go next. This is a big benefit of night vision, as generally devices will hold their value decently.
Personally, I started out with a surplus Gen 3 PVS14 for ~1500 with no given specs. Given my time in the military, I knew it was going to have performance up to a certain level and some blems, but I was fine with that knowing I was using this as a stepping stone, probably keeping it as a loaner device, and likely going to upgrade as I learn more about how I personally use my device. As I got more involved, I decided binoculars might be better for my use case, which is primarily hiking on sloped terrain above all else, putting an emphasis on depth perception.
I ended up picking up a used Gen 3 ANVIS 9, which again, had no specs, but I knew (being surplus aviation NVG’s) would have certain minimum specs and probably significantly less blems.
Upgraded to a Chinese housing, BNVD 931’s, and now I have essentially my dream setup for the time being without getting ridiculously expensive. Only ~$4k into the ANVIS/BNVD setup total. You can, of course, get a lot more expensive.
I don’t personally find White Phosphorus to be all that it’s hemmed up to be, especially for the substantial increase in price. If you have the money to spare, why not, but getting lower spec WP is going to be inferior to getting higher spec GP for most people.
If you live in a spot where there’s usually a lot of ambient light, like a desert or somewhere with no tree cover, maybe you’d want to sacrifice some of the ability to see in extremely dark conditions for less eye fatigue (which is the primary benefit of WP vs GP).
The “diminishing returns” aren’t really there like they are for AR’s. As you spend more money, you are legitimately getting more capabilities and better specs. That’s just where the subjectivity comes into play as far as how much capability you need for the activities you do, or plan to do, and the environment you do them in.
Been a long day so I’m not sure how comprehensible this even is, but hopefully it helps a little!
newguyR1@reddit
In for 2. The gen 1s are fantastic. Have like 4 of them and 0 issues
geopede@reddit
I’ve got a Gen I on a Mini Draco with an Attero Bravo mount, it’s been rock solid. Honestly impressed, that gun is not easy on the vibration and it gets hot as fuck, probably one of the toughest for an optic to hold up to outside of magnum rifle cartridges.
newguyR1@reddit
I'm going to put the gen 2 when it shows up on my scar 17 just to see how it does lol
geopede@reddit
I’d guess fine. SCAR is heavy enough that recoil isn’t too bad.
Masa87@reddit
Bro I bought three on eBay for 100$ each in 2018. Two on ars one on ak. Never changed batteries while on shake wake and kept zero. If this is as solid as first gen ill upgrade
DUCK_FACE_JONES@reddit
Too soon to tell, til then just keep running gen1
danjr704@reddit
Anyone use or know if the juliet magnifiers work with this?
geopede@reddit
They should. That said, I’d recommend the Holosun VMX3 over the Juliet. It’s a better value and it fits more mounts. The Unity FTC mount that flips to center instead of side is great with that magnifier.
kratsynot42@reddit
Gen 2? Okay where do we find 'clearance' gen1's please!!
geopede@reddit
xiZm_@reddit
Would this be a good dot for an AK without the mount?
geopede@reddit
Yeah, assuming it’s as durable as the Gen 1. I’ve had a Gen 1 on a Mini Draco (7.5” barrel AK) and it’s held up great. A full size AK will be much gentler in terms of vibration and heat.
Mine is on an Attero Bravo mount since the Mini Draco doesn’t have the attachment point for a dogleg rail, if you can use a dogleg rail I imagine it’d be even better.
LORD_JEW_VANCUNTFUCK@reddit
Yes. I have a HS403B for my AK102
skatar2@reddit
Probably going to get some flak for this, but Dackoutdoors has this for $113 for red dot and $118 for green dot. I've ordered from them many times with success although you are waiting minimum 4-6 weeks for it to ship. Just FYI for anyone not in a rush and considering this. I usually wait for their $5 shipping promos in an email and they don't charge sales tax for my state.
skatar2@reddit
This or PA MD-25 gen 2?
TheFireOfPrometheus@reddit
Which sig red dots are American made?
georgelambo@reddit
the 8t, 4xt, 4xtpro, Sig Romeo X/enclosed, Romeo sig loc enclosed. I think there's more but the lower-end stuff like sub $200 isn't "American" made
TheFireOfPrometheus@reddit
Thx , I will look at those instead of the Holosun
Physical_Wind954@reddit
I didn't even know there was a gen 2
tougeusa@reddit
In my experience of like 5 Gen 1 and like 1 Gen 2, I like the Gen 1 more. The Gen two gave me double vision so I’m assuming theirs a diopter to adjust, which I’m not sure as to why because the Gen 1 is great without it
grahampositive@reddit
I just needed warranty work on my gen1. They just sent me a green 2 instead. It's nice enough, I think I liked the old one better. Other than the mount and the body shape I can't really see how they're different. In my very unscientific and limited opinion the glass was maybe better on Gen 1. I'll have to take it to the range and see it in daylight
Ttylery@reddit
I also just needed work done on my gen 1. Im waiting on a new one that they are sending me. Im hoping that its just the gen 2 without the issue of the gen 1.
gfx260@reddit
I still have multiple gen 1 and a couple gen 2. I’ll have to check out the glass because i didn’t notice a difference yet.
TooEZ_OL56@reddit
Came out like ~3 weeks ago maxxx
Toasterofwar@reddit
They have been out for about 4 months
Tragic_BoB@reddit
Think it came out this year
Tacomaguy24@reddit (OP)
Me either til 10 minutes ago. I bought to try it though.
ArgieBee@reddit
That mount looks like dogwater.
calebanana@reddit
What’s the overall consensus on this optic?
AcuteYellowFever@reddit
Good dot, new design looks much better than the old one (imo), new reptilia-esque mount, fits all T2 pattern mounts.
I ran one for awhile but couldn’t get it to look good under a magnifier and swapped to a holosun. For a range toy only ever doing 1x or if your astigmatism isn’t as bad as mine that might not be an issue for you.
Stunning-End-6870@reddit
In your opinion, would it be kind of a waste then to try an x3 magnifier on this? Debating between a PA and a Juliet. It’ll be my first time with magnifiers though so I’m very open to suggestions.
AcuteYellowFever@reddit
TL;DR: not a waste of time, but the dot wasn’t clear for me in front of an HM3X and I fixed the issue by going to a Holosun HS503CU.
Long Answer: I unfortunately only had a sample size of 1 so I can’t say for sure. I can list off a few of the variables I wasn’t able to control for and you can make a judgement call for yourself.
I was using a Unity FAST T2 mount for the dot and a Unity FTC mount for the magnifier, which was a Holosun HM3X. The Romeo (and most T2 pattern dots honestly) has a slightly higher optical centerline than the T2, meaning the dot centerline sat slightly higher than the magnifier centerline.
The dot looked like a comet under magnification when I had it in the center of the magnifier image, but when I shifted my head down so that half of the magnifier glass was obstructed, the dot became crisp again.
It’s possible if you run the dot on its stock mount and a magnifier at a correlated optical height that they may magnify well. It’s also possible that my unit was defective and had some optical aberration that was coincidentally corrected by some magical light path through the edge of my magnifier.
Unfortunately I cannot tell you whether or which is truly the case. I can only say that my HS503 does not have this issue.
brs_one@reddit
Therein lies the magic of the HS503GU. For all intents purposes the same optical centerline as an Aimpoint Micro
Im-a-magpie@reddit
The GU series is almost perfect. If they added helicoils to the mounting points it'd be the only optic I'd use. I did over tighten one once and stripped the threads so I switched over to the Romeo4 series.
brs_one@reddit
I hear that. Aimpoint’s the same way
But fr just add your own helicoil 🤙
Im-a-magpie@reddit
I tried and just monkey fucked it even worse lol
brs_one@reddit
Oh no! 😭😂 I’m sorry! I’ll concede that repairing extra-fine threads like those can definitely be tricky sometimes
Im-a-magpie@reddit
Tricky and also I had no proper tools or background knowledge of what I was doing lol
carefulbingo@reddit
wholesome interaction. nice.
ConcernedKitty@reddit
You might have astigmatism
grahampositive@reddit
This is exactly the issue I'm having and I thought I was going crazy. Literally the same symptom, where it's a crisp dot at 1x but at 3x looks like a streak - but it resolved to a dot if I squish down on the cheek weld to the point where I had almost no eye relief and the magnifier starts getting obscured. I need to take it to the range and mess with it more but I agree some change in the sight height will cure it.
brs_one@reddit
Even the inexpensive Holosun Micro-pattern optics (e.g., HS403R, HS403B) hold up great under magnification
The center dot on my 403B, 503CU, 503GU, and AEMS all looks the same under magnification
Both of my ROMEO5’s looks like ass under magnification
gfx260@reddit
Which PA magnifier? The Juliet is made to work with them and i like them. I have a 5x juliet and it’s fine but the eye box is tight.
baylife94901@reddit
do not under any circumstance get the sig micro magnifier. terrible eye relief and it cannot be used with backup irons. I hate most micro magnifiers. You cant get the ocular pushed back far enough because of the stubby mounts
StressfulRiceball@reddit
Not gen2 but I run a Holosun 3x magnifier on Gen 1 and it works great. I also have astigmatism.
Adventurous_Emu_9274@reddit
I went the Juliet route for my 11.5. Find it a little useless since any real outdoor range is at least an hour drive on a good day. That and my face has to be on the charging handle for a proper sight picture. But if you’re shooting at distance the Juliet is fine. Offset mount is nice. Looks pretty damn good on the pistol.
williemick@reddit
Not at all. I personally really like the holosun HM3X, it's really good for the $$$ simmons has them cheap.
brs_one@reddit
Yes. Get a Holosun 403B or 403R instead
cgn-38@reddit
The ones on aliexpress for 35 bucks are great! Great optic.
The base is too thin on the new one. Also cost 4 of the one with a good base.
Adventurous_Emu_9274@reddit
I like it. Shake awake is pretty big for me since I work 16 hour days and literally come home to sleep. Forget to turn optics on and off a lot. It sleeps next to me. Zeroed super easy once mounted. Mounted super easy. I’ve dropped the rifle on it on concrete a few times by accident (unloaded thankfully), held zero and still functions.
BallsOutKrunked@reddit
I bought a few (gen 1?) when they were $100 shipped. simple red dot I've had zero issues with. I prefer the microprisms from PA but they're 2x the cost.
krisefire@reddit
Is the gen 2 more similar to the T2 in terms of height? I've heard the gen 1 cowitness is way off on most T2 mounts.
SnooSeagulls1413@reddit
Finally a cheap red dot with a good mount
street_sweeper_757@reddit
What height is the low mount?
Adventurous_Emu_9274@reddit
2.5 sight over bore.
OlivePuzzleheaded495@reddit
So that makes the mount ~1.3"?
AR15 center bore to the rail top is ~1.2"
Adventurous_Emu_9274@reddit
I bought in on this months ago. It’s been at this “sale” price forever now. Not a bad deal though.
