How did you find your next career step as a Systems Admin?

Hey all! I’m 22 making 72k a year as a systems administrator in Houston and right now I’m thinking about what I should be looking into to find my speciality. I have a strong interest in cloud technologies (Azure) but programming has been a hobby of mine for a long time. No degree, no certifications (yet). How did you figure out what to specialize in?

Absolute dumb luck. I was a sysadmin at a shop that was nearly 100% Citrix based & ended up being better with Citrix than thier existing staff & became a Citrix specialist for a while. I moved into Cloud from Citrix via several Citrix on AWS, Citrix on GCP & Citrix on Azure projects that required me to certify on each Cloud Provider. After certifying on every major Cloud Provider it was logical to move more into Cloud Infrastructure. Find what interests you or, failing that, find what you're really good at. Or be like me and just jump at every opportunity you see.
