What’s the creepiest thing you have encountered that you have never been able to explain?

About a year ago we were walking the dogs through a nearby forest and came across the ruins of an old 1800’s hospital, entirely fenced off with a wide perimeter and completely inaccessible. It was set fire to in the early 2000’s so is now just a huge 3 storey stone shell with no roof or internal floors or walls, It was late autumn so the sun was beginning to set and the whole place had quite an eerie feel over it.
There was a cluster of small buildings adjacent to the fencing that were still in use as something but close enough to the hospital for us to be able to get pretty close to the structure. Just as we were starting to leave we noticed a young woman had appeared and was standing near these occupied buildings but she was completely still, just watching us from about 30m away. It was dark enough by this point that we couldn’t make out her face, but I’d say she was in her 20’s. We assumed she was just keeping an eye on us to make sure we weren’t trying to get into the hospital and half expected her to come over and say something.
Then, without warning, she suddenly leapt onto a nearby, slightly above waist height wall and began crouching (think Assassins Creed style) on top of it, motionless but staring straight at us. It freaked us out and we left pretty quickly.
It still comes up in conversation whenever we’re walking over that way as a creepy encounter we’ve never been able to explain or justify. It’s possible she worked in the occupied buildings but her silent stare and the way she leapt onto the wall felt creepily inhuman.
So it’s got me wondering. What creepy encounters have others had that they still can’t explain to this day?

Was this hellingly by any chance? I worked nearby there about 15 years ago, it was like some of the surplus patients ended up never leaving the place

No this was in Lincolnshire. It was a US military hospital during the war, there are rows of corrugated huts in the grounds still.

It’s even creepier there now with all the new builds that have been slapped up all around it.

Does my sister count? She has this whole Damien from the Omen thing going on when it comes to animals.
Animals REALLY don't like her at all. They ever run from her (scared) or they go for her (like she stole their food). When we were kids and we went to the zoo it was really bonkers because the animals in the enclosure reacted to her like she was an alien or something. The lion charged at the glass screen and slammed its paws against it (literally trying to maul her).
My parents just brush it off but recognise that her and animals "don't get on". I can't personally explain it and think its a bit creepy because animals usually have better instincts than humans when it comes to danger and behavior-wise, you normally have todo something to set an animal off, not just "exist". So I've just come to the conclusion that my sister must be some sort of changeling. 😂
Jumdera@reddit
My Dad and my son are like that but with electronics. They buy a new phone, new computer, whatever. A day later it starts to act up, doesn't respond, turns off unexpectedly, changes settings and generally acts like it's been through a washing machine cycle (like I did once with my phone). The machine calms down and acts normally whenever other people interact with them for an hour or so. My Dad keeps buying new stuff and giving away the crazy stuff and never acknowledges it's just him. My son has ruined 3 hard drives so far and I've lost all my stuff so now he has an old phone and an old computer and I've no idea how he manages but he's not coming anywhere near my electronics again. Sorry, not sorry.
kldc87@reddit
My dad has this happen. Electronics just don't work right when he's the one doing it. I'll tell him how to do something, watch him, i can see it doesn't work, i take the thing and move away slightly, repeat, and it will work no issues. If I'm having trouble fixing something, I have to ask him to go in a different room sometimes. He's a carpenter, so it's just a joke now that he can only work with wood, not Electronics. It is really weird, though.
Brilliant-Ad-8340@reddit
There might still be some animals that like her... like the dog I used to have, whose sense of animal intuition was apparently broken. He loved everyone, especially men, and especially the husband of a relative of mine. The dog absolutely adored this man, would stick to his side like glue any time he visited and try to cram his whole big clumsy body onto this guy's lap.
The guy, who is thankfully no longer married to my relative, turned out to be a nasty abusive piece of work, rapist and child abuser. The dog was too goofy to pick up the bad vibes I guess.
UnderTheHarvestMoon@reddit
Very interesting. I have so many questions!
What is your sister like as a person? Could she secretly be a serial killer or something, and the animals can sense it? What does she think about being an enemy of animals? Has she ever had a pet?
This is the weirdest thing on the thread for me.
joebearyuh@reddit
My sister is also notoriously hated by all animals and shes also a real piece of work so I think animals just know
Moreghostthanperson@reddit
This one fascinates me, I wonder what the animals are picking up on for them to react like that.
Cloielle@reddit
I had a boss that was hated by all dogs. He moved in a very erratic way; quickly and unpredictably. In my logical brain, that’s why they barked and growled at him. But really, I think they knew he was evil.
diwalk88@reddit
Same with my husband! They had a camel out at the zoo for people to see and as soon as it saw my husband coming it started freaking out, trying to go for him. They had to put it away lol. Walking into the monkey house with him is terrifying

Some years ago, my brother and I stepped into the back garden. It was an Autumn night. It was almost moonless and thick with clouds, so it was about as dark as it gets.
Anyway, we both noticed, at more or less the exact same moment, something about two thirds of the way up our garden. It's hard to describe, but it was shaped more or less like a praying mantis' head, but more exaggerated and smooth. It was no bigger than a football and it was luminescent.
It glowed with a similar kind of light to that you see on glow worms, fungi, or deep sea animals and plants. It wasn't like a torch light or anything electrically generated . It seemed to be, as I said above, something like bioluminescence or maybe like what you'd see on uranium glassware. But not as powerful. It was quite dim even in the darkness of that night.
Whatever it was, it was perfectly still, and it filled each of us with a nameless kind of dread. I'm not sure I've ever felt a fear like it before or since and I've been in some dicey and life-threatening situations. I know it sounds crazy but it seemed to exude a malevolence, an almost tangible hostility and malice.
I think, but I'm not sure if its a memory I have embellished in the intervening years, that I recall hearing a very, very high pitched sound, like an old kettle's whistle. It was a similar frequency to those "ultrasonic" cat deterrent devices, but more sustained and continuous.
My brother and I couldn't handle it. We rushed back inside and locked the doors and drew the curtains. We sat down and didn't talk about it for hours, even though we were having a drink and a bit of a party.
Eventually, we nodded at each other and decided to go check outside. Whatever it was, it was gone. All that was left was a small indentation where it had pushed down a patch of grass.
To this day, I have no clue at all what it might have been.

About 20 years ago, me and my wife were in Gran Canaria and we took our hire car and went for a drive and ended up at a dam.
There was nobody at this dam just us two, and it did feel a bit odd that we were in the middle of nowhere.
We walked towards the dam away from the car and then we stopped to take some photos of the Dam. I look back towards the car and in the distance I saw a man walking towards us. He was walking directly towards us as he got closer things got a little bit weird from about 50 m away. I can see he has white trousers on flared at the bottom white shoes no top on, and he is full of tattoos on the top part of his body. He’s got long black hair pulled back into a ponytail. He looks like he’s about to go on stage and play guitar in some kind of band.
He’s walking directly towards us. I’m starting to think I’m going to get murdered at this point. He walks straight up to us and straight in between us and carries on walking straight up towards the top of the dam and disappears out of sight.
He could’ve walked around us.
I just find this very odd.
SpaTowner@reddit
He was probably meeting someone to take some cool promo shots on the dam, for his band, saw you watching him and decided to weird you out.
LazerCat121@reddit
Maybe. 🤔 I’m actually wondering did we see a ghost that day

SpaTowner@reddit
Not holier than thou, I just think it’s weird to discount or discourage discussion of rational explanations.
Out-For-A-Walk-Bitch@reddit
I get that, but you're commenting on multiple people's stories, as though your explanation is fact.
SpaTowner@reddit
Is there a limit on how many threads people can comment on? If I read something and there seems an obvious rational potential explanation, why do you care if I comment to that effect or not?
I think it’s healthy to explore rational explanations rather than take every ‘phenomenon’ at face value. I’ve not accused anyone of making anything up, so your concern is a bit confusing tbh.
Out-For-A-Walk-Bitch@reddit
Who mentioned a limit? It's definitely healthy to explore alternatives, but you don't know the people you're talking to, and explaining your opinion as though it's fact, which is obviously isn't.

I've had a recurring nightmare since I was a child. Crawling across the ceiling of a delapidated building, trying to be quiet, I'm aware people are crawling behind me, I don't see them, but they're trusting me to get them to safety. We're being chased by an unseen entity below.
Mid-20's, I go "urbex'ing" with some friends. They take me to this incredible abandoned building, grandiose house, very decayed. We explore, wander around, experience the building. Then a few of us go out to the rear garden, it's overgrown, but there's an outbuilding, a completely seperate structure.
The moment I stepped in to that building, I recognised it as the one from my nightmares. So many hallmarks and identifying features just clicked. I immediately panicked and excused myself. Left the others to it.
That was more than a decade ago, I still have that recurring nightmare.
The way I entered the building was where the "chasing unseen entity" would've from my recurring dream. Looking up, I could see exactly where myself and my petrified platoon would've been crawling across, a delapidated decaying ceiling of what I assume was once a loft.

A few weird experiences here and there. The only one I cannot see any explanation for though was to do with my mobile phone.
This was pre-smart phones. My brand new out of the box dumb phone was sat charging (you used to have to fully charge them when you got them). It had my new sim in but no numbers saved in my contacts, and nobody had my new number yet.
I'm all alone in my parents' house, sat looking at crap online on my desktop when the phone rings. The number display shows the landline number for the house I'm in.
I was too scared to answer it or cancel the call, so I determinedly ignored it until it stopped.
Still absolutely no idea what happened that day.

I live in a house that’s almost 400 years old. There’s been a continuous domicile on its site for nearly 1000 years. It’s not haunted, but it is made of a timber frame filled with clay, straw and cow shit. Which is why, when we had the roof redone and the entire house got soaked during a storm and everything started to smell, we found ourselves in the Belgium Ardennes for a much needed getaway. Where the creepy shit happened.
We (me, wife, 9yr old son, two dogs) were in a camper van at a place called Moulin Rensiwez, near to where the Battle of the Bulge was won and 2 clicks from Achouffe, where the beer La Chouffe is brewed.
The beer’s logo features gnomes which, coupled with the fact that I’d had a skinful of said beers when this unexplainable event happened, could go some way to explaining the unexplainable event.
Walking back to the campsite after last orders at Taverne de la Brasserie Achouffe entails a pitch black stroll besides a small tributary stream to the Ourthe river. I’ve got both dogs on the lead and my head torch set to red light. Wife also has red light head torch. About halfway back the temperature dropped suddenly and the dogs turn around and start growling. The path, plants and trees look slightly different. We then hear what sounds like a duck with giant feet running along the muddy bank, making slapping noises. Dogs are going fucking mental. And to my astonishment this tiny, naked, two foot tall, flat footed, Dobby-from-Harry-Fucking-Potter-looking-thing sprints past us on the path, making grunting noises and disappears into the woods. We saw its saggy arse, stumpy legs with huge feet, pointy face, long arms and the smell reminded me of a dead badger my dog once rolled in.
So we’re just stood there, dogs growling and craving Dobby flesh, humans in slack jawed whatthefuckness. Double timed it back to the campervan, cricket bat out, son tucked up between us, cracked a bottle of whisky and discussed what we had just witnessed deep into the night, while the dogs sat by the door with their ears in radar mode.
Went back the next day and we couldn’t pinpoint where the occurrence took place.

I was once sitting on the floor in front of my armchair in my upstairs flat in Swindon. My boyfriend of the time was sitting on the back of the sofa. We were watching the Nelson Mandela concert on my black and white portable tv and the atmosphere was electric. Suddenly one of my wellie boots came bouncing across the room, up onto the back of the armchair and hit me in the head. There was no one else in the flat and the doors were triple locked. It still freaks me out when I think of it

I can relate to your fear! When I was a young teenager spooky stuff used to happen in our house so my mum and her bf at the time would try and make me feel better by joking about it. we used to have a glass chess set that sat on the coffee table and I used to do this thing where you get all the pawns and try and line them on the board so they don’t share a line with the other ones. so I was doing that and the spooky stuff got brought up and I joined in on the chat and was feeling a bit freaked so went over to sit next to my mum on the couch and I joined in on the jokes and was saying stuff like “I’ll call the ghost X because it’s my fave name” and saying I could make it tidy my room for me and stuff, and just as I was in the middle of joking there was a distinct noise of glass-on-glass, like a “clink” noise coming from the chess set. The board and the pieces were all glass but the bottom of the pieces were covered in felt to obvs stop them breaking, but I figured it was just something settling - I dunno. After we finished talking I went back over to the set and picked up one of the pieces and it was legit broken in half, vertically. Little shards of glass surrounding it with a fairly decent radius. We were SO fucking freaked out I didn’t go in the living room for ages and never made fun of any supernatural stuff in that house again just in case lmao
mysp2m2cc0unt@reddit
What other spooky stuff happened in your house? Did you ever get it on camera?
oldwomanjodie@reddit
No unfortunately not!! My mums friend did but that was YEARSSSS ago and she won’t still have it now, it was on an old camera haha The house just had bad vibes - the kitchen cupboards would open and slam shut in the middle of the night, and the backdoor keys which were always on the counter next to the door would be lying in the middle of the kitchen in the morning. We always kept the kitchen door closed bc cat, and my bedroom door and my mums bedroom door made a sort of L shape so we know it wasn’t the other person doing it because we could check and see they were in their bed sleeping. I was CONVINCED I saw a girl at the bottom of the stairs but I have always admitted it could have been a trick of the light since the lights were off. My bedroom was always FREEZING as well. Like radiator on 24/7 freezing. But then you’d go into the hall and it was fine. There was no reason the room should have been so cold. And you would hear what sounded like someone walking upstairs. Not the house settling, or the pipes, because that was very different. My mum was once in the kitchen and kept hearing it and it was going faster and faster as if someone was running back and forth in the hall, and then it sounded like it was going down the stairs and she legit turned round expecting to see someone. She gen got so freaked out she mentioned it to a friend who does sort of supernaturally stuff and she came over and “cleansed “ the house, and her friend mentioned the was getting the energy of a guy who was really angry and was interested in me. My mum was like em wtf but also kind of playing into it as well because she’s always been sceptical, so she was like “ya fuckin pedo bastard get out my weans room” and then all four of the adults in the room (who were sitting on my bed back against the wall) felt the wall shake and banging coming from the loft. There’s nothing in the loft, it was never used because we were afraid of spiders lmao. I had NO idea this went on until years after as they did it while I was at my grandparents, but I did notice at the time my room was no longer cold all the time and the vibes weren’t as off. We don’t have any mental health issues that would cause us to imagine this shit, and it was also witnessed by other people who didn’t live in the house. Co2 alarm was working perfectly lmao.
And then there’s a story about my great-grandmother’s friend. My great-grandmother had a friend who was psychic and she would often gather a group of women friends and would give them all readings, to make a bit of money but it’s also entertaining for the women to be told they’re gonna meet a handsome man soon. So one time they were doing it and she went round all the women and got to the last one and instead of giving her a reading she just up and left, making an obviously fake excuse, and left the house. The woman was a bit annoyed because she obvs paid money so my great-grandmother went to her the next day and was like wtf she was really annoyed you did that and her psychic pal was like I’m really sorry but I couldn’t tell her that her man’s gonna die on Friday. And my great-grandmother brushed it off because he was a perfectly healthy man and he wasn’t in a dangerous job so why would he randomly die but then he did 🤷🏻♀️
MalfunctioningElf@reddit
I can imagine! It's the visual imagery of a wellie suddenly coming to life like something off The Shoe People that made me giggle (showing my age there).

Was on a roadtrip and missed the turning for a campground at Big Sur by a few hundred metres. As we were turning around in the road a perfectly normal looking couple around our age appeared out of nowhere and started asking for a lift to the campground. We had a full car of stuff so couldn't give anyone a lift anyway but something was absolutely terrifying about these two people, the word 'vampire' instantly came to my mind. They kept trying to pressure us for a lift despite the short distance. After telling them again that we couldn't we drove off.
Such a mundane story about possibly two normal people wanting a lift but i honestly believe we dodged some vampires or skinwalkers that night. My wife didn't pick up on the vibe at all but i didn't sleep a second that night wondering if they'd turn up. I've been in some genuinely hairy situations in my life and don't get bothered by much but this encounter really gave me the creep beyond words.

During a night shift on my break about 4am I settled down in a small waiting area of an outpatients building that no one else was in, turned lights off and set an alarm on my phone so I could have a little nap. This area was part of a long corridor that had offices, a kitchen and toilets running along one side. As soon as I closed my eyes I heard the tap come on in the kitchen. I get up and go in and turn the tap off (this tap was the kind you have to twist, not push down as the kitchen was for staff only). I go back to the waiting area, put my feet back up on the chair opposite and as soon as I shut my eyes again the tap comes on! I rush back to the kitchen, no one else is there but the taps fully turned all the way back on. I hurriedly turned it off and rushed back to the main part of the hospital all while saying out loud 'im going now please just let me walk away!' as I was convinced some malevolent hospital ghost was trying to scare me. Didn't end up having my break time nap but did get to freak out my night shift nurses when I told them about it. Never took my break there again

I like to think of myself as a rational sort, don't really believe in ghosts or anything but I once decided to go on a night walk through the woods near me down to a ruined abbey. Got there and started to freak out from just the general vibes of the place in the dark. As I turned to walk away I couldn't help myself from saying "I understand that I am not welcome here, I am leaving, please accept my apologies."
Gotta be polite.
baby_oopsie_daisy@reddit
It does help with the nerves to voice it out loud I feel. I'm not a big believer in ghosts either but I figured it doesn't hurt to make your intentions of leaving very clear. You are brave though walking in the woods at night near ruined abbeys!

Yes er why did u decide to walk to the Abbey at night? Asking as a woman. I'm guessing these decisions are different for men?
diwalk88@reddit
Taps turning on and off used to happen in the house I lived in as a kid, it was fucking terrifying. Then doors started opening and closing, you could watch the handle turn and door open but nobody was there. You'd hear footsteps coming down the hall and open the door to see who was coming, but nobody was there. Then the door handle of the opposite room would turn and the door open. Then the loud banging started. I'm talking about a huge crash that would have everyone running to see what was going on, but nothing. Then we found the two inch thick wooden cutting board broken in the kitchen floor beside a broken chef's knife. Things got weirder from there. The people we sold the house to did a midnight flit not long after moving in, I'm guessing things were still happening.

We used to have one of those fridges that if the door wasn’t closed properly it set off an alarm not blaring but loud enough that if you were sitting in the living room (beside kitchen) you could hear it but not if you were in bedroom (upstairs).
One night I had to go to the loo, I could hear the alarm and thought to myself ffs I’ll finish my tinkle and go close it. Then I heard an almighty slam to which the alarm suddenly stopped. I just thought to myself my wife had gone downstairs to get a glass of water or something and closed to while she was down there. To my horror when I got back to the bedroom she was fast asleep. I froze. Stood there for a good few minutes to try to comprehend and question if I did actually hear it beep and slam shut then stop. But I definitely did. So I went downstairs prepared to see an intruder of some sort when I entered the kitchen…nothing. Still spooks me to this day and cannot explain it.

Late this this thread but a post below reminded me of this. Not an encounter as such as all I met with was my own instinct, but... Something very weird happened to me in 2005 that I've never been able to account for.
A week to the day before the 7/7/2005 attacks in London, a Thursday (I remembered that but just looked it up to check and it is as I remembered) I was there visiting my mate who then worked as a researcher in the House of Commons for an M.P. We were staying in the MP's flat for a few days whilst they were back in the constituency and going to theatres, etc as my mate took a few days off for us to do it and she loved that theatre stuff.
I get the train down to London, one of the earliest I could. So landed early-ish in the morning at Kings Cross. (Some time before 9).
I used to live some of the time in London in the late 1990s/early 2000s, a few years before, and knew the stations and Underground pretty well. Always loved going on the Underground. But I get off the train at Kings Cross and watch people funnelling down into the Underground and, for some reason, I just panic and can't get on it there, at all. Never happened to me before or since.
So I walked the short distance to Euston and got on it there instead. Felt OK getting on at Euston. Just not Kings Cross. As nothing immediately happened I probably didn't give it much more thought after that but I still have a vivid memory of it, now.
Go across to Westminster and meet my mate somewhere and we had a great few days going to The Globe and The Royal Court and being tourists.
I can't account for it. I actually don't know if I even mentioned it to my friend when I met her an hour or so later because it probably didn't seem worth mentioning but I defo told husband and kids a couple days later when I got home.
A week later, the terror attacks happened - one at Kings Cross underground station and it was about the same time of day I was there the week before.
I spent the day ringing my friend but she was at work, the network crashed/was shut down and we didn't get hold of her til some hours later, to know that she was OK. It seemed surreal that I'd been right there only days earlier.
To this day I can see those people going down the escalators and just stalling near the top and thinking "I can't do this". Always listen to your instincts, I guess.

This was not me, it was my friend Suzanne. She was about ten and her parents had brought her a cabin bed. Her dad who is a very fastidious person and can build anything assembled it, Suzanne tested it and all was well. Later in the day her and a group of friends did a ouji board. When she went to get into bed that night the entire cabin bed collapsed. Every screw had been undone with absolutely no explanation at all.
Admirable_Holiday653@reddit
I’ve had a few weird experiences I am someone who picks up on atmospheres. And unlike the person who animals dislike, animals normally really like me. My dad is the same, ducks have got out of a river for him to stroke them and rats will congregate near him when he’s fishing. I went to an old house called Gunnersbury House and we were having a tour of the beautiful Victorian kitchens. Then we went into the butlers sitting room. I was absolutely overwhelmed with the feeling of evil and a pain up my left arm, I was basically knocking people out of the way to get out. The guide came and spoke to me and said did you pick up on the bad feeling and did you have the pain in your arm?I said yes, she said it happens very occasionally and people always react in the same way.

In 2023 me and my wife and son were living in a rental bungalow as we’re waiting for our house to be finished from building work.
Very nice bungalow in a very nice place, possibly about 70 to 80 years old .
My son’s bedroom was in the loft conversion, which also had an ensuite bathroom. I’m in his bedroom telling him off about how messy his bedroom is and how he is going to reorganise everything and tidy up and as I do, I glanced towards the bathroom door and see a very tall but stick like figure dart from the doorway and hide behind the door. It freaked me out it’s possible I was with my son. I very quickly did not show any change of expression as I couldn’t quite believe what I’d saw and carried on telling my son off. Then my son looked at me and screamed out I’ve just seen somebody run into the bathroom and hide behind the door. - he saw it too.
The figure was a like a 6 foot tall stick man. And it moved like a real man but very fast. It was kind of black in colour and if I said it had to resemble something it would resemble one of those stick man artists use that you see available in all art shops where you can move arms, limbs and the head.

Having said that I’m Muslim and believe in jinns so there’s that lol.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
there's some overlap between accounts of the actions of djinns and what westerners would call poltergeists. I've often wondered to what extent some supernatural occurrences are known to different societies, individually...
PinkNeom@reddit
I believe it’s probably a full overlap but beliefs and cultures, as well as the form jinns choose to take, has shaped different perceptions.
Admittedly I don’t know too much about the subject, but in Islam we believe they’re living alongside us in their own society with their own free will, so there’s good and bad ones just like humans. And it’s only the ones who are sinning that interact with humans, as they’re not allowed to enter our world just as we shouldn’t attempt to enter theirs.
It’s a subject that scares and fascinates me at the same time!

I've seen 'shades' twice.
One time it was late at night and I was doing walking meditation around my couch in my living room. It was dimly lit with a single table lamp in one corner. As I'm doing it for several minutes, I make a turn and see a large shadowy figure standing still in one corner of the room. It's about 7+ feet tall, I think and like a transparent shadow.
Its unusual, but I'm calm and meditating; I think I just slowed down a bit and said out loud "can I help you?" to which there was no answer, and I continued walking around the couch (and past it :D ) and by the time I walked around to the same spot again, it was gone.
The next time I was meditating under a little tree in a field very early in the morning. I'm sat there for a while and the sun is coming up and I must have been meditating for 20 minutes or so, looking down at the ground a meter in front of me, when I decide that's enough and raise my gaze and see a small group of rabbits about 15 meters away from me.
There were several of them, spread out in a line roughly, eating the grass. One of them was not like the others, however. Right at the end, on the right, was one made entirely of transparent shadow; I could see the grass behind him through him. He was just like all the others, lolloping about slowly from time to time, eating the grass, but he was a shadow.
Most adorable ghost ever. :D

Although often dimissed as quackery there are those who claim nhi are here on the planet, have been for a very long time but use very advanced technlology to hide from us. We see them under certain circumstances and various governments have specimens and craft in their possesion. See i'm typing this and i feel like a loon but then you listen to some of the recent congressional hearings in the states and you think hmm maybe. If a govt did want to hide the fact from the general public the best way to do so would be to make it ridiculous so people are afraid to talk about it or believe it.
paukin@reddit
Or maybe that's just the only explanation we can use to make sense of it. It seems that there's a lot of very weird and unexplainable phenomena that has been happening from as far back as stories go. I can't believe that just because we are in a certain place technologically that we can draw conclusions and parallels that fit our paradigm. Older cultures would do the same with their cultural baggage but from what I've experienced, the reality, for a lack of a better word, is much much weirder than either ghouls and goblins or extraterrestrial technology can account for. I for one like a bit of mystery in my universe and the speculation is the fun part.
blacksheeping@reddit
Sure but Id like to think that at some point we might figure it out. There are plenty of things that were previously mysterious and we now largely understand. I suggest now is the time to understand this particular phenomenon and i'm sure there will be other mysteries beyond it.

This was more my parents than myself as i was only little. Outside our bedrooms in the hallway is the loft entrance, our dog slept in the hallway underneath it that night (which isnt that weird but she never did this before or after) and at about 2am apparently a bright light was shining down (there is a lamp up there but you have to physically feed the wire down and plug it in one of the bedrooms and the hatch was closed) Apparently all my + my sisters little electrical toys we had at that age turned on and started making sounds. Both mum and dad were too scared to check anything until the morning - at that time there was nothing out of the ordinary. Dad was always very any ghost/ufo/paranormal but had no explanation for that one.

I looked it him for maybe 2 seconds then instinctively back at the tv. When I looked back he was gone, checked the whole house and no one was there. Still creeps me out to this day

I experienced a very similar thing when I was 13 or 14, same kind of ghost, I believe I saw the hat man or something very similar. About 8/9 years ago, a normal, random day. I was sitting at the kitchen table on my phone waiting for my wife to finish getting ready before we went out.
Then for a few minutes I was somewhere else. Can't really describe it but I was just living another life for a few minutes. I was walking a dog while on the phone to my girlfriend (not the same person as my wife in real life). Just talking about mundane stuff. As it was happening it felt completely normal and like it was my life. Then after a short time things just switched back to my normal life and I was back at the kitchen table.
Never had anything like that happen before or since. Really freaked me out for a while. Felt very very real. Even had a search for the "girlfriend" on facebook etc (even though I was talking to her on the phone I knew her name and what she looked like if that makes sense). Nothing matching came up and I felt an idiot for even having searched but really unsettled me for about 6 months and I still think about it quite a lot even now.

My parents had a dog when I was a child, in one of the bedrooms it would face the wall which backed onto the landing and go into the most blood curdling growl, hackles raised, teeth bared and stood there rigid as a post. Utterly terrifying. It did this 3 times that we could remember. Years later after the dog had passed away, there was a mirror placed on this wall and someone took a photo in the room. In the background there was a portion of the mirror and in the mirror was a face. Everyone who saw the pic when they saw that portion said it felt like someone had walked over their grave. Very creepy and I'm not usually superstitious.

This isn't my story, it's my uncles.
A bit of back story, he used to work on the London Underground doing maintenance to the tracks/ tunnels etc.
Once on a night shift, he went into a tunnel with two other colleagues. They'd stopped to do something and this man said to my uncle like 'hey (uncles name) can you show me the way out?' My uncle thinking it was one of his guys said 'you know the way out.' I think he was so engrossed in his work that he didn't turn around to see this guy to start with.
This guy says 'I'm so cold' then my uncle said he immediately felt dead cold and the air around him dropped.
So my uncle turns round and shines a light on him, my uncle said to me this bloke is what he would call a ghost standing there, his gut was telling him something wasn't right. The guy was holding a really old/ vintage lamp and wearing a really old dirty uniform. The guy kept saying over and over again 'I'm so cold. I'm so cold'
My uncle eventually said to this guy 'I don't think you're supposed to be here mate. Can you see a light anywhere? And he looked right at my uncle and said 'can you help me? I'm so cold.' I'm unsure if the colleagues came to see who my uncle was talking to but one of them tried to approach this guy thinking, it was someone in their team playing a joke the three of them and as he was approaching he just disappeared right in front of their eyes. All of them freaked out and ran!!
My uncles retired now but says he thinks of this guy from time to time. I think now if they do maintenance on that side of the track, it's a two person job.

So freaky!
There is a documentary that aired a few years ago called Ghosts on the Underground. I can’t remember what channel it was on but it’s on YouTube. Basically railway workers telling their spooky stories from working on the London Underground.
There’s a man who tells a similar story to your uncle’s about seeing a man on track holding a Tilley Lamp and even interacting with him. He was new to the job and I think he got the whole line shut down because he mentioned to his boss he’d spoken to someone down there and as no one else was scheduled to be there at that time, they had to do a full search. Naturally, no one was found and the boss told him there had been stories of a ghost down there 👀.
Might be worth mentioning to your uncle and seeing if it’s the same part of the Underground from the doco!

There was a story from a previous job where the staff from my place went to a strip club with a supplier. Everything was on the company credit card, and people were maxxing out the cards on lap dances. Apparently, one of the guys was something of a regular, and the girl he was with shouted out "I've told you before, Mark, no touching!!"
I repeated this story I'd heard to someone else while on a factory tour with other engineers, and the guy in question was in front of us. I'm pretty sure he heard me, and knew what I was talking about, but he never said anything to me. At the time, I felt a bit guilty for calling him out behind his back.
However after reading your comment I don't really feel so guilty. I think humiliation is, at least, the first step towards sorting this kind of thing out.

Firsthand experience of this.
The leader of a mathematics camp dated me as a 16 year old. I learned later that he was currently doing the same to another child, and I reported him to the organisation. I distinctly remember, before I had named him, them stating "we are fairly certain we know who it is, but please can you just confirm". They immediately emoved him from his leadership position, and from working directly with children, however he remained an active volunteer with the organisation. Years later they began to be lax with allowing him to interact with children. I also noticed that, as a university lecturer, he had also been given the role as 'access officer', which involved him going into local schools and mentoring and tutoring under 18s. I reported him to the univeristy, but aside from following procedure, did not remove him from his officer role, and really did not give a shit. I am a member of the organisation, which he still volunteers with, and whilst people generally don't speak well of him, they do tolerate him. It is weird.

I was invited to a cleansing ritual/rescue of some sort (because apparently I was spiritual). I knew all of the people, I was in a rock band, aged about 20, 34 years ago. The singers girlfriends mother (who was a white witch ), had a spell/hex whatever placed on her. Anyway it begins, light candles and crap and then we all join hands, the mother starts saying that we are to visualise going through a fog, I did, and then I'm in a small monastery, and fighting with a sword, alongside one of the daughters, killing faceless monks in black, as the singer and his girlfriend untied the mother with the hex. Anywho, we came back out of the spiritual bit, and I was pretty fucked with the experience and couldn't understand what had happened, so I asked the people with me to explain and detail the events. And they did. They mentioned my attire, that Becky and I were knights with swords and we were slaying these black robed, faceless monks, whilst the bandmate and his gf were rescuing/untying the mother from a stone table in a ruined chapel. Totally weird...

I’m not spiritual in the slightest and always try finding rational explanations for things, I’m a bit of an outlier in my family for it. Both my dad and sister have had regression therapy where they were taken back to a previous life.
My sister recounted being paraded in front of a small village having been accused of being a witch by the townsfolk and then drowned in a bucket in front of her daughter.
My dad was a Lancaster crewman during the war named George but illness prevented him going on a raid one night, one that none of his mates returned from. He apparently ‘came round’ in floods of tears.

2024 me and two mates walking through the new forest at night. It’s June about 11pm but there’s stil a glimmer of light (plus moonlight). We see a silhouette of a woman in white (20s) who eventually we meet on the path and she asks how we’re doing, and walks between us into the forest.
None of us can agree who she spoke to or who’s side she passed but we agreed to gtfo shortly after that

I used to live in this old creepy house with a bunch of hollow walls, trapdoors, a cellar we had no access to etc.
My little sister is autistic and has lots of additional needs, and her bedroom was attached to mine. When we initially moved in she started having nightmares and would get up in the night, and she would come through to my room to sleep in my bed with me. The first time it happened she woke up screaming, and came running into my bed. I was partially asleep at this point. Once she got into bed and quietened down, she turned around onto her back and went “Who’s that lady?”
Me half asleep just told her to go to sleep, but then I half opened my eye, and saw her pointing to the end of my bed, and I swear the room felt like it had gone cold. I just put my head under the covers and tried to go back to sleep.
When she was in her room after that, she started to have conversations with herself which hadn’t really happened before, and it sounded like a one sided dialogue most of the time. Her answering questions, laughing at comments, things like that. When we asked who she was talking to, she would always say something about a lady, the lady in the dress, things of that nature.
One time I was home alone and was blow drying my hair in the freestanding mirror on my wall which was adjacent to my bedroom door. I had my door cracked open to let my cats in. At one point something behind me caught my eye, and I saw a tanned woman with dark hair and a dress on peering through my door. Just one eye, like she was trying not to get caught.
One of my friends saw the same thing, and other people who stayed round at parties said that they heard footsteps pacing up and down the stairs and upstairs all night.
Freaky house. We don’t live there now and I was kind of a skeptic before we moved in, but idk. Hard to explain it all away
Polz34@reddit
So this one I was able to explain, years later.
When I was a kid, maybe 11/12 I started waking up in the night and seeing a hooded figure in my bedroom, for literally a year every night I'd wake up see this hooded figure, freak out and turn on the light to discover nothing there. Right by the window. Not sure why but eventually I just slept through and never really thought about it again.
Fast forward to 18, it was my first time back home after going off to university and my hometown is small (so quiet) and by this point I'd gotten use to the loudness of a city so just couldn't sleep, I look up and sure enough, hooded figure stood by the window, suddenly I had major flashbacks and of course turned on the light. However, adult me could see that the outside light was creeping round the end/side of the curtain creating a shadow where I had a shelf (one of those old fashioned wooden one's with a thicker ledge but then slowing edging off) which, with a shadow made a perfect hood shape.....

Had a car that used to randomly make a weird groaning when parked up. It once interrupted a conversation I was having with a mechanic about that very thing, and they couldn't explain it either, but it proved I wasn't imagining it.
It was very nearly destroyed in a crash but deemed just about fixable, after fixing, no more groaning.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
I can explain that actually. Caused by a combination of a weak handbrake and sagged rear suspension springs that depress more than they should when you are in it. You put on the handbrake and get out of the car.
the reduced weight on the rear springs means the car tries to lift up a bit, but it can't because in order to lift, the rear wheel has to rotate slightly as the rear suspension geometry changes, but the handbrake is stopping it doing so. the spring gradually overpowers the handbrake pads and they groan against the brake disk surface as the disk rotates through them
its more common with Saabs (I have 2 of them and have owned 3 overall) as they are always set up to lock both the front and rear wheels when parked, which means twice the effective braking and more tendency for the rear pads to make noise as the car can't just settle forwards, but any car thats habitually parked in gear is also more likely to make this noise

Me and my daughter watched two small, glowing amber ufo's dance around the sky. The way they moved was totally unlike any aircraft or drone or anything else I'd ever seen. They kept speeding from one part of the night sky to another really quickly and disappeared high in to the clouds at an unnaturally fast speed. Still get goosebumps thinking about it. I'm usually the sort of person who looks for the logical explanation but I couldn't find one for these things.

Were these amber ufo things or beams of light because I've had the exact same experience with light orbs just speeding past each other in the sky.

Just a normal Saturday night, I was watching TV home alone with my 2 dogs, when I heard a banging sound coming from the basement. Legit sounded like somebody was just banging something on the appliances we had down there.
Now there is no access into the basement from down there, only through the upstairs rooms that I was in and knew nobody could have come in and got past me.
So with this knowledge I was not as scared as you may think, more curious as to what the heck the noise was.
One of the two dogs who is a massive alpha male asshole (said with love) and wants to fight everybody also heard the noise and was now bolting down into the basement to investigate.
I get down and see that it is my other dog, banging his head into our dryer and chest freezer which are next to each other. My alpha dog is just stood there watching confused. So I approach my other dog and calm him down and we all go back upstairs. Now this freaked the heck out of me and upset me as it seems such very strange behaviour for my dog to do.
Fast-forward only 30mins or so, the banging starts again. I instantly look over to my dog, but he is lay down, but now also aware of the noise downstairs. We run down into the basement and it is alpha now banging his head in between the appliances. Again, I now calm alpha down and we all go back upstairs .
Nothing has ever happened again since that night, 3 years now - so that ruled out brain tumors which is what I read on line about why maybe dogs bang their heads ( but 2 dogs, suddenly on the same night, and it only effecting 1 of them at any given time).
There were no toys or treats and to the best of my knowledge we are 100% critter free down there, so they were not reacting to anything of that sort - also, if you witnessed their behaviour, it was obvious they were not hyper ventilating over a treat/critter
3 years and the 3 of us never talk about that night lol.

Saw what I'm convinced was was a big cat one evening when I was younger, was walking home just about to enter a snicket which was dark but the street I was on was lit, just as I was about to enter it flew out past me and into an adjacent field. This was in West Yorkshire around 05 it was jet black and far too big to be anything that makes sense other than a big cat but its movement was what has me convinced it was feline.

I worked in a rescue kennels for a while tucked away in the countryside. One day it was eerily quiet , had over 60 dogs and there was always noise . It was very still and calm and foggy. I was there by myself but the owners lived in the field close by but they were at home and I was just pottering . I noticed one of the dogs had done a wee in their kennel so I went in gave them a stroke and hello and mopped up. Well as I was mopping I heard a knock at the kennel block door , very distinctive knocks and then a female voice call out hello , hello several times . I panicked because I thought a customer or visitor might have been waiting for a while so I walked to the door from the kennel which took less than 10 seconds and there was no one and the front door to that room was shut . I rushed outside and headed to the gravel car park and there where no cars , and you could hear cars pull in to the car park from everywhere on the property and the dogs barked when cars arrived. But there was nothing and still totally silent . I did a full lap of the kennels and grounds and absolutely nothing . Now I don’t know if I believe in ghosts as I’m quite a skeptical guy. The next day I saw one of the other staff and he’d worked there about 15 years and was like a son to the owners and helped them build it from a caravan and a few blocks Into a very high quality rescue and boarding kennels . I explained the weird scenario and he told me that several years ago he’d seen a woman appear and vanish in the kennel block tight in front of him and it freaked him out and that older staff members that no longer works there had seen weird things too and he was very genuine about it. Still unsure about the whole thing but it was odd and unexplainable as there was literally no where for that women to vanish to ?

Not sure if it's technically creepy, but as a young child, I was in bed one night, and my grandad came into my room and gently woke me up. I loved my grandad. We chatted for a while about lots of things, he told me he loved me, and I guess I drifted off to sleep. I woke up the next morning, remembered grandad was visiting and excitedly rushed downstairs. Mum was in the kitchen, and I asked where grandad was. She was a little confused. Turned out that my grandfather had passed away in the early hours of the morning, in his bed, about 4 hours away.

Well, I couldn’t explain it to years till it dawned on me a few years ago that my experience was a typical episode of sleep paralysis. A shadowy presence was pinning me down and I was fully wrestling with this thing to get it off of me. I felt the weight of this thing and everything pushing me into my bed, and I felt myself grappling its body. I was absolutely terrified of this for years, and would tell anyone who’d listen that I truly believed I’d gotten into a fight with some kind of ghost. Now looking back, obvs it was sleep paralysis. But still, was very creepy before I understood what it was.

A few years ago me and my ex went to go smoke a joint near a forest close to the city, maybe about 6-7pm. We didn’t go in the forest, but there was a short straight path adjacent to an access road just outside of it with rows of big trees on either side that we walked down. There was houses nearby so it wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, but you wouldn’t usually see many people around besides dog walkers or cyclists.
We’d done it plenty of times before. This time, we were waking down the path and noticed someone peering out from the side of one of these big trees, about 10m away from the path. There was no one else around. I remember he was wearing white shirt and black trousers, no tie or anything, with the top button open. Maybe in his 40s.
We noticed and kept walking, making a point of loudly talking about it so he knew we knew he was there. As we got closer, he would move round the tree so he was just peering out, constantly watching the entire time. Didn’t do or say anything, didn’t run off, just watched us.
We were a bit freaked out and kept walking to the end of the path. He was still there when we looked back, watching us, but we eventually got out of sight. When we walked back, he was gone.
Normally I’d think it was someone waiting for someone to mug, but it was still light out and he didn’t look the type. The shirt/trousers just made it more creepy.
Maybe it retrospect he was planning a SA or flashing, but he looked unhinged more than anything.

Myself and my partner were sleeping in my old room that was part of a HMO household in 2019. My room was the living room area of the house, that overlooked a main road. The area wasn't great, there was a lot of crime and unwanted attention, especially as a red light district was nearby. We heard and saw a lot, and would always see shadows of people walking by the house through the curtains, but never had issues directly with anyone.
This particular night we were sleeping in bed, and abruptly woken up by what sounded like someone running. The thing was, this wasn't a normal sounding run, it was so fast and loud! It sounded like whatever it was wore hooves (the only way I can describe it, as it was that heavy 'chop chop' sound), and the whole room shook as it ran past! They definitely weren't wearing heels, not at that speed! We jumped out of bed screaming! I ran to the window and tried to see what it was, but the whole street was too dark. My partner checked the time and it was exactly 1am when this happened, which was a weird coincidence.
We didn't see a shadow or anything pass by, so to this day we have no idea what it was. It definitely wasn't an animal or a prostitute (we would have seen her shadow run past).

In the 90’s I took my mum and kids out to Furnlee reservoir for a picnic. We parked up and my mum said “I don’t like it here, somethings not right, let’s go somewhere else”! It made me feel jittery, there was no one around. So we did carry on to Buxton. Then months later, on the news, I couldn’t believe my ears…a woman’s body was found behind a small building there, I think it was the toilets that was in the car park where we were. I remember my mum saying “ I told you something was wrong there”.

When I was very young maybe 6 or 7 I was on the bus on the way to see my grandparents and there was a little kid aged about 3 or 4 in the window seat in front of us sat next to his mum. All of a sudden the kid says "mam that lady is going to die", and points at an old grandma sat at the very front of the bus, the mum shushes him and then he says it even louder so everyone on the bus could hear. They get off the bus two stops later and the kid edges past the grandma who gives him a warm grandmotherly smile and then they're on their way.
Later the grandmother gets off the bus same stop as us and then just keels over in the street, my mom even managed to grab her arm as she fell. She was dead as a doornail.

Was staying at my ex boyfriend’s dad’s place in a tiny cottage in Tattingstone, Suffolk. For anyone who hasn’t been- it’s basically a tiny village of 10 cottages or so in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farms (just a farm shop, pub, church and a post office). There’s also a huge old Victorian hospital like building that was actually an old work house but is now abandoned to make the place even creepier. Anyway we were outside arguing one evening bc the cottage was so tiny and we didn’t want to just be arguing in the middle of everyone, and we’re sitting on the wall at the gate of the cottage overlooking the neighbours farm - just rows of farmland soil stretching for miles. I look off in the distance while he’s moaning at me and see a super tall and thin almost transparent man calmly walking across the field from left to right. Can’t explain why it was so oddly non human, but I pointed him out and we both ran inside. Probably just a man and it was trick of the eye but something about the height/ gait/ transparency was so odd

She could have been doing some urbex. When she spotted you, she probably chose to freeze before deciding she would be safer on slightly higher grounds. A lot of these abandoned buildings have security that turn up from time to time, sometimes with dogs. She was likely trying to suss out if you were a dog walker or security. I think the sudden jump up may have been her seeing that you had a dog.
I used to love an abandoned building tour and had a few security dogs released into buildings, luckily they were harmless but more like trained to alert if intruders were there.

So, I've recently retired but for 35 years was an IT Manager. 20 of them at an Insurance Broker in Leeds. Google 'Broadway Hall Leeds' and you'll see the building...200 year old mansion, former doctor's house converted and full of corridors and small offices. I was often there after hours due to the nature of my job.
The caretaker was off long term sick and I was the nearest with a Co. car so got lumbered with covering for him which meant opening the place up at 7am and locking it up after the cleaners left at 9pm. The cleaners always said it was haunted, paper clips flying around..that sort of thing, but I don't believe that stuff unless I see it. It never bothered me being the only person in the place even after dark in winter. Just do the necessary, set the alarm and lock the door.
One winter night I was doing this, on the third floor. The easiest way to see if any office lights had been left on was to go round the corridors with the corridor lights off. Any light from an office would show under the door. I went round a corner, past an open doorway to a small kitchen and walked 20 feet to the end of the corridor. If the light in the kitchen had been on it could not fail to have registered as I'd walk right past it 2 feet away and would have switched it off. Something made me turn round and the kitchen light was on.
No way did I miss it. No beer had been taken as I was driving.
Quite stunned I went back and switched it off and left.To this day I am convinced the kitchen light had been off when I walked past it but I can't explain it. Other staff wouldn't work on the top floor after hours, they were too freaked out by the noises an old building makes.
Anyway, I'm still cynical but no idea what happened that time

I went down to the kitchen and bent down to load the dishwasher and I felt a hand gently run across my lower back. It felt like a silk scarf falling off me. Didn't feel sinister at all, very female, like something a grandmother would do.
I told my husband and he said when he went back downstairs after speaking to me the kettle had turned itself on.

I was given a book about 15 years ago for my birthday about bike rides in the South West of England. (I’m from the South East). This year I decided to drive down to Cornwall and at the last minute I remembered the book and put it in my glove box. Once we were down there we stopped to get some lunch. Rather than eat in the shop car park we decided to drive along the coast and found an isolated spot with just one lone parking spot. After eating lunch I took the book from my glovebox (which had never been opened in 15 years) and flicked to a random page. To my absolute astonishment I was directly in the spot where the photo on that particular page was taken with my car pointed in the exact same direction. It was incredible and the creepiest thing I could have imagined.

Was taking a short break in Somerset during October and booked a “ghost tour” at Dunster castle just for the sheer hell of it. Did it a few years prior where it was conducted by National Trust guides so did not expect too much more than I had seen before.
This time they had actors doing different performances throughout each area however when we got to the Leather Gallery the area seemed cold and heavy. During the English civil war this part of the home was used as a hospital and the NT had an actor playing the ghost of a soldier who passed as a result of the conflict.
I was stood there at the back of the room watching the guy act as best he could. There was no one else behind me which was confirmed be family members who were with me at the time. In my old flat loads of weird shit used to happen. Wardrobes would open, tv would come on, my Bluetooth speaker started without me touching it… I thought it was just wonky floors and dodgy electrics, but when I’d go for a shower the automatic air freshener would fly off the shelf it was on as soon as I got out and land at my feet. I’d then have to crawl around naked and look for the batteries and stuff. After a while I got fed up of it. So I stood in the bathroom door and told it to piss off. I said I wouldn’t kick whoever it was out the flat because that wasn’t fair, but I’d rather they stayed out of my bathroom because it felt like they were watching me shower. Years ago I was living in a shared house - old early 20th century converted bungalow. I occupied an upstairs room in what was the old attic. My GF of the time was sleeping over and woke me in the dead of night saying that someone was in the room, specifically an older black guy with glasses and grey hair who had been standing at the foot of the bed when she opened her eyes. I chalked it down to a bad dream, but she was extremely freaked out and really adamant about what she had seen. This was really out of character for her, to the point it started to unnerve me a bit, and I got out of bed and checked round, only to find no one about.
I mentioned this to one of my housemates who lived in one of the rooms downstairs a few days later, and he looked freaked. He explained a few weeks previously that he had been hosting an after party for some friends, when one of them who had been to the bathroom returned to the front room and joked "who let the old guy in?"
Everyone else expressed confusion, as he explained that he had seen an older black guy (grey hair, glasses) in the corridor, who had walked into my housemates room. My housemate was worried it might have been someone who had seen the party and had wandered in off the street (the house was on the the edge of a couple of notably dodgy areas, and we had been subject to a couple of previous attempted break ins), however when he went into his room no one was there.
His friend was extremely perturbed, however as he had been pretty heavily under the influence of some recreational substances, the rest of the group laughed it off.
I stayed in the house another couple of years, and there was no repeat of this or any other weird incidents. Nonetheless thinking back, I'm surprised this didn't scare me more at the time - for a few weeks I was on edge, but kind of just got with things after that, the confidence of youth I guess.

I used to work in an old hotel with a lot of history. Strange things often happened and staff and guests would frequently report “feelings” but we could never work out anything solid. Weirdest thing was when one day guests came before their room was ready, so we kept their bags and off out they went for the day. When the room was ready I took their bags up to the room. Guests came back a couple hours later, took their keys and phoned down from the room minutes later saying there was broken glass everywhere. Went up and the glass sheet which sat on top of a shelf had basically exploded and showered every corner of the room - but the wine bottle and glasses were still entirely intact and in place and even the room service menu was still stood upright. Checked the door logs, no one had gone in or out and no other room had the same damage. No idea what happened.

Tempered glass does sometimes explode randomly. It can happen if bolts holding it in place corrode and put pressure in the wrong place. When I was working as a lifeguard one of the glass panels on a balcony spontaneously shattered and sprayed bits glass everywhere.

Mine has to be the time I was working late in the cash office at my local supermarket.
This particular time I was working alone in a secure room and a security window slammed shut, scaring the crap out of me.
I know I was alone because all entry and exit is done via the airlock, controlled from the inside (I have to press buttons at both doors) and I hadn’t let anyone in for hours prior to when it happened.
All the worktops were along the walls, so my back was to the room. There were no exterior windows and a single bank window/teller type thing was set up to the left of the airlock so small items could be passed through.
This window had only one security feature that we never used or had to use in the years I worked there: a thick bullet proof glass shutter that latched into place. It wasn’t used because we’d never had anyone try to force their way in and closing it cut off the sound to the hallway; perfect way for getting surprised by whoever came up to the window.
That evening I was doing the same paperwork as we did every day, balancing the cash contents before closing when I heard this almighty crash from behind me. I span around but didn’t see anything or anyone.
The big safe next to me was open and too heavy to slam shut. No windows for a breeze. The air conditioning was off. I opened the airlock and looked inside and it was empty as usual. Nothing on the countertop besides lots of coins in bags and they hadn’t been moved.
It was just me and my paperwork.
Freaked out but unable to do anything about it as I was locked in with hours to go on my shift, I returned to what I was doing. I saw no one over the course of the shift and I finished up my tasks with nothing else weird happening.
Hours later I was sat at the computer, waiting for management to come and let me out. My attention was halfheartedly oscillating between the phone (they sometimes called to say they were running late), the window and the hallway security feed (I wanted to avoid being surprised by sudden arrivals), when I froze.
I’d just looked at the window and realised it looked off. It took me a moment to realise why and when I did, my blood ran cold.
The security screen, the one we never used, was firmly latched into place.
I remember staring at it for what felt like ages. Eventually I mustered up the courage to go over there and reopen it; convinced at any moment it would fly back out of my hand or slam itself shut again.
Management showed up, I swiftly exited and never spoke of it to anyone beyond gentle probing as to if anyone else had experienced anything strange if the topic came up.
I worked there for years after the incident and it never happened again.
I’d say I imagined it, but for the fact I had to unlatch the security glass and move it back into place.

Walking home from the pub, alone, saw a misty clump in the shape of a torso. It floated out of the front door of the building next to my house, and into the train station car park opposite. The door was closed and there was no one else around. It was not a foggy night. The house next door was a carriage works back in the 1800s, so has been there a long while. Talked to some mates about it and others have seen the same thing but couldn’t ever explain it. Asked my neighbour if he knew anything about it and he couldn’t explain it either.

I babysat for a family friend. The little girl was about 4 and I was a teen. They had some drums upstairs from Africa and all of a sudden they started playing, loud and fast, getting faster and faster. I grabbed the little girl and we sat in the garden till her mum and brother were home. I’m quite sceptical but they weren’t the sort to play pranks and no neighbours either side so goodness knows what it was.

Happened when I was younger ,
Went to visit a castle/Stately home run by the national trust.
You could pay for a headset to use while you walked around that would give you information and history about the Castle\Home .
I’d turned down a wrong corridor and come off the tour route around the castle. I was minding my own business when a Solider walked past me in full military gear. Didn’t say anything or even notice me . At the time I didn’t think much of it as just presumed maybe they had some special even on that day etc.
It wasn’t until we were about to leave and stood in the little gift shop when I mentioned this to the lady who was working behind the till, too which she said that no there wasn’t any special events that day and nobody was dressed up, she passed a funny look toward my mother at the time. Again been young I thought nothing on it .
I still get asked about this solider today by My parents etc .
He was fully visible just like any real person, never disappeared through any walls or do anything suspicious. He just walked off down the corridor/Hallway. I turned around at went back to the Original Route .
Still unsure what I saw that day .

The reenactors are often floating about national trust places even when there isn't an event on. They also aren't great at communicating what's going on elsewhere to the front desk staff.

Have you ever thought that the guy you saw dressed as a soldier, might have been... a soldier?
DrLGonzo420@reddit
It was a solider no doubt . Was it a guy in costume or a ghost who knows.
Should have made clear that the uniform worn wasn’t Khaki or any of the modern prints . Was like a Red and Blue uniform with a funny hat . 🎩
Kinda like the Queens guard you see today in the UK or like a Nut Cracker Prince , given this was nowhere near Buckingham Palace or London I don’t see why an off duty QG would Be in uniform walking around a national trust place . Could be though . Life is strange

The lady in the till was lying to mess with you. That’s what your mother was supposed to understand from the funny look.

People who lie (and in my experience it isn't that often) for a joke will generally reveal the lie shortly after.

Well she wasn’t seeing OP again later, was she? That’s why she tipped OP’s mother the nod.

My ex and I were mega into Paranormal stuff and used to stay at haunted hotels.
We stayed in the St Katherine’s Room at the Golden Fleece in York. Two single beds in a small room. We both woke up at the same Time around 4am and not only was there a drip from the ceiling but our single beds were In the middle of the room. Not just slighty off from the wall but they’d moved down the room into the middle. Safe to say we left immediately.
Another occassion we stayed in the Minster room, same hotel, and in the middle of the afternoon, as we were unpacking, the wardrobe door flung open at such force the magnetic closing mechanism broke off its hinges. Thw landlady was totally unbothered when we told her - said it happens all the time.

The wife and her friend had taken the kids on an inflatable boat/raft trip along a normally very calm and peaceful river whilst we were on vacation in France. Me and the other dad were packing the cars up, wondering what to do with this unexpected free afternoon when the first raindrops landed. The rain turned into hail and the thunder and lightning started very soon afterwards.
We tried calling the wives, but reception had dropped to nothing, so we decided to try to follow the route of the river and give them any assistance we could provide. The path grew further and further from the meandering river, so we knew that we'd have to go off-track through the forest to have any hope in finding them. We didn't know how far along the river the had made it before the weather had turned, so we made some quick decisions and picked two entry points to try and pincer them between our rescue effort. We had exchanged a few messages, so knew they had managed to drag the boat ashore and were sheltering under it with the kids crying, petrified and soaked. The weather, somehow, was getting worse.
I had to beat my way through about 30yards/meters of stinging nettles to get to the river and was just about to get in - when I saw a small Japanese lady sitting, huddled up under a tree. Hooded and drenched, I asked first in English, then in French, if she was ok but got no response... just a vacant stare. I don't know how she got there - she was nowhere near the hiking path, and there was no boat nearby. So I left her, this seemingly petrified little lady, curled up under a tree surrounded by stinging nettles and a raging river. Her desperate stare lingered with me, as I got into the water, wading in chest high water, looking for signs of wives and kids. We finally found the rest of the family, carried them, drenched and terrified, back through the stinging nettles to the hiking path, returned to get the boat then got everyone back to the car, and dry towels and made some hot chocolate to calm the kids.
I made one more attempt to check on the small lady under the tree - but she was nowhere to be seen. I'm sure she was just a tourist in shock, well out of her depth - but to me, she came across as a tree spirit of the forest.. and she was just as surprised as me to see somebody else out in the torrential hail, soaked to the bone, legs stung to pieces far far from home.

I live just outside London. I was along a canal, fields everywhere. It was still light out.
In the corner of my eye I noticed the moon was out, so I looked up. But I notice the clouds are going infront and behind it, it was in atmosphere. It was a crescent orange/white light. Perfectly stable.
As im looking at this thing I notice two right-angle protrusions sticking out of one side. Just as I'm processing this it slowly floats up in an arc and disappeared above through the clouds.
I have absolutely no idea what it was, I've never seen anything so unexplainable in my life. It kinda shook my world view in a way, like, I'm a rational person and normally wouldn't believe stories like this, but it happened to me.
If it didn't have the weird protrusions I would have chalked it up to some rare atmospheric phenomena or something, but they made it looked "designed", even though the whole thing was light/plasma. Every now and then I try to search up if anyone has seen anything similar but nothing pops up, it's always too "ufo" looking.

I was looking at the stars one night, when a large patch of sky turned completely black, with no stars to be seen within it. It could have just been clouds, but all the clouds in the sky were clearly visible.

I was staying at my dad’s place and dad headed to the pub while I decided to have an early night. I was woken up by the sound of someone opening and closing the kitchen cupboards a few hours later. I started freaking out because my dad’s house had been broken into twice before. I quietly grabbed my phone to call the police, but then I heard my dad coming down the gravel driveway. When he came through the front door, I ran down the stairs yelling “there’s someone in the kitchen!”. Me and my dad ran into the kitchen and there was no one there, no sign of a break in, no one running away. Nothing. I’d experienced a few weird things in that house when I was a kid, and I’d dismissed it as an overactive imagination thing, but I was 29 when this happened and I was lying in bed absolutely shitting myself for a good few minutes listening to someone move around the kitchen before me and my dad ran in there!
