I felt a little fatigued a few hours afterward but was fine with rest.
I chose a Friday afternoon so I could have the weekend to rest if needed, but I would have been fine going to work the next day.
I did all 3 two months ago because COVID was tearing through my kidās high school (& I need to schedule shingrix booster). I felt worse in 2021 when I got the first Moderna COVID shot.
Just got the same trifecta yesterday. Shingles on one arm, flu/COVID on the other. Mild headache yesterday and mild sore arm on shingles side. Feeling pretty good today.
Same, last week. It was my second Shingrix, and I think it was much less painful than the first one. The first one hurt so much it made me cry when I rolled over onto that arm while I was sleeping.
Because of side effects? Itās become common where I live to get flu and Covid shots together, but I think if I did that Iād be in rough shape the next day!
People combo covid and flu all the time. Pharmacist said you can do what you want, but definitely separate shingles from those two. Suggested that I take a break of 2 weeks between shots. No one's telling you what to do. They're just offering you advice. Do what you want.
I guess I was lucky. I didn't feel anything from the first shot except a slightly sore upper arm for 24 hours. 2nd shot, same soreness, felt kinda sluggish and tired the next day. Took Tylenol and had a nap. The day after, I was fine.
Everyone was making out like I'd be out for a week. I was completely underwhelmed.
Im 59 and have been holding off due to the commercial that says guilame barre syndrome is a possibility?? Ive asked my doctor and pharmacist and they ask me if ive ever had any bad reaction to any vaccines (and i have not) so thats how they screen you I guess??? Also if you get guillame barre is it temporary?
Iām not medically trained at all, but I think with any vaccine, itās a risk/reward calculation. I think because GBS is rare, itās considered a risk worth taking for the general population when the vaccine offers 99% efficiency against shingles.
Sorry it's been hard, but as someone who had shingles (and subsequently got 2 doses of Shingrix), let me tell you, this is WAY better than shingles. Worst pain I've had in my entire life. I'm lucky because I haven't had lingering effects. Some people do for their entire lives.
I hear you, OP. No prob with first shingrex Vax but the second kicked my poor arse! High fever but shivered with severe chills. Got in a hot bath and asked husband to boil water to pour in. Still shivered. Head pounded like a big bass drum. Gatorade, Tylenol, and bedrest helped. Pharmacist said about 10% of recipients suffer those symptoms.
Shingrex kicked my ass. Itās a nice excuse to rest up for a couple of days though!
Also, I didnāt realize it wasnāt an annual vaccination. Just the two shots and youāre good to go for life. (Unless science changes.)
How long in between shots for you all? I had the first on last winter and just haven't gotten around to the 2nd one. I assume within a year is still fine even if the recommend sooner. I didn't have too much of a reaction the first shot. I expect the 2nd one to knock me out.
Itās ok. I just deal with chronic combination of long list of medical appointments combined with chronic depression. Itās nice to get an āoh no!ā Tx. I donāt want shingles but itās hard to get out of bed
Can confirm. Had shingles and they sucked harder than Trump with a bad microphone. Had Shingrix series - second shot kind of blasted me for a day and a half. But if it works itās worth it.
Is it about as bad as the covid shot? Every time I've gotten it I feel like crap for about a day and a half... and then I feel better.
I'm eligible now, but I've held off on getting it.
Same here with the second shot. First one hit me about four hours later and knocked me down for a few hours. Prepared for the second one and nothing happened. Thought I was good but eight hours later it laid me out for about 18 hours.
Having had the shingles once already it was not so bad.
I've had active, painful, shingles 5 or 6 times in the past 10 years. It's hell. I'd gladly take a few days of feeling crappy from a vaccine (which I'm not eligible for yet because I'm only 49)
The first Shingrix jab laid me out so flat (fever, aches chills)- if you put a card table 8 feet away stacked with hundreds and told me to help myself I couldnāt have done it. The second one no problem. Iām still glad I did it. I watched my grandma suffer from shingle.
When I turned 40, I asked my doctor for the shingles vaccine. She said I needed to wait until Iām 50. When I turned 41, I got shingles. I wish they had let me get the shot!
This is what makes me mad! I have so many friends that got it in their 40s and said it was awful. I can't understand why they won't let you have it until 50.
Did they make you wait until you were 50 to get it? I'm going to be back in the US this summer and would like to get it but I will be 49. How many shots did you need to get and how much time in between?
Done, for what it's worth.
Own personal story: doctor did blood titers before administering Shingrix, and found that I'd never had chickenpox, even though I'd been exposed multiple times as a kid. Had always assumed (as had my parents) that I had it, but asymptomatically or with really mild symptoms. Wound up getting the chickenpox shot instead.
Iāve only had the first so far and I was down and out for 3 full days of feeling like absolute trash. Canāt imagine what shingles would be like. Dreading the 2nd one but grateful for science.
My first one made me feel like I had the flu and I had a huge reaction at the injection site. It freaking hurt! But my follow up one was fine. My initial one was so bad that my wife is afraid to get it at all.
Ok weāre 13 hours in. How are you feeling? Iām going to guess youāre feeling pretty crummy right now? in a couple months itāll be time for my 2nd shot. iām dreading it!
let us know how itās going OP!
After the 2nd COVID shot killed my arm for several days I was expecting the worst, but only had a slightly sore arm for both shots. No sickness at all. Hang in there!
Had my 1st and it ached for 11 months so went with the 2nd at month 12. The first shot was a big year for covid and boosters, adding the flue shot on top I was glad to give it a rest after.
I'm not advocating that "vaccines cause autism", but you're not understanding the argument of those who are. The human brain is considered fully developed around the age of 25. Any vaccines taken later in life WOULDN'T cause autism spectrum disorders in the opinion of either camp. Again - I'm NOT implying vaccines lead to autism but rather just pointing out the faulty premise of your comment.
The argument of those who say vaccines cause autism tests on research that has been thoroughly debunked and retracted by the Lancet, where it was originally published. The argument has nothing to do with age.
It absolutely does. Everyone I've ever heard from on the side of believing vaccines contribute to autism were speaking of childhood vaccinations. I've listened to this stuff for years and never heard anyone suggest vaccines cause autism in adults until this thread. But of course, this is Reddit, so here I am arguing about it for no personal gain to myself and with absolutely no skin in the game.
Did this on my doctor's recommendation AFTER having shingles. Got it after the first shot.
You really don't want shingles. Imagine a rash with electric shocks radiating from it. For a week or two.
Imagine the shingles in the nerve going into your ear so it feels like somebody sticking a sharpened pencil right into your eardrum. I had nerve pain so bad I had to take gabapentin for months afterwards.
I did something stupid. I got my second shot, flu shot, and covid vaccine all in the same day. Had to work the next day and it was terrible. I was so out of it and in so much pain
I did it last year, a few months before my 50th. Had two friends in their 40s get shingles and it was not pretty; one was in danger of it getting in his eye. Anyway, I only experienced minor achiness for one or two days after the second shot. No biggie considering the awfulness of getting shingles.
As a person in ER healthcare, I can for sure say that just about every shingles case I've seen is EXPONENTIALLY worse than shingles. I just got my first dose, sore arm, for a week, nothing else.
Got mine a couple of years ago. First shot kicked my ass, part 2 was no biggie. I'm curious if anyone else is doing Covid boosters. I had the original vaccine and the first 2 boosters. My doctor says I don't need to get any more ... did get my flu shot, though.
Does anyone know if you can get this if you have an existing nervous system disorder? I know shingles works via the nerves. Don't want to make things worse for myself. I've already had shingles once as well.
Oh, MAAAAAN!
Dr. told me a couple weeks ago I should get the shots and was going to book it next week.
Reading this, I'm now SUPER dreading it but knowing it's better than contracting.
Damn Humanity! It shouldn't have to hurt to stay healthy!
Itās weird reading peopleās comments because it was the first shot that killed me and the second was nothing. But still better than getting shingles.
Glad you got it! My Gen X husband had shingles years ago, in his 40s. He was in pain for months.
We both need to get the shingles vaccine now, but trying to figure out where we can get it done, without paying out of pocket has been a huge headache.
Hey! My husband and I had a hot date last night and got our second shot.
Weāre fine today. My arm is sore down to my hand, but I still worked my tail off around the house. My husband says heās a little achy, but he spent 6 hours cleaning up leaves.
Itās a bonus because we really thought weād feel crummy and blow our weekend. Youāve got this!
You do not want to get Shingles. Seriously. It felt like someone had slowly pushed a javelin through me from my belly to my back, spritzed it with jalapeno sauce, and wiggled it back and forth.
Get the shots!
Lol I got a flu shot on Wed, on Thurs got 2nd Shingrix(shingles), 2nd hepb, and COVID. Had fever and chills for about 24 hours. Finally feel better....

A friend of mine came down with shingles yesterday. Sheās in a lot of pain. If you are getting the shot, thatās great. She had been putting it off unfortunately.
After reading everyoneās story about the second shot, I thought I would be in a coma for awhile. Turns out I had maybe a day of feeling like I was coming down with a cold and then back to normal. Very pleasantly surprised. First one kicked my ass though.
Hope yours is a breeze.
Hope your second shot goes better than mine. First shot was a piece of cake. Second one? Basically, I'm recalling the worst flu I've ever had, then doubling it. That's about how I felt the next morning and basically all that day and into the next. Still beats the hell out of getting shingles.
I'm on the fence but did have shingles about 20 years ago. It was painful as hell, with them on my head and upper right forehead. Seems like very low (<10%) chance I'd get them again, so just not sure if I want to potentially feel like crap for several days from the shot.
Same. My doc said get the shots anyway; if you got shingles when your immune system was strong, itās going to be more likely to cone back when itās weak. So yesterday I (53M) got my 1st dose plus a Covid shot. Today I feel like I have been beaten with a baseball bat. Just trying to sleep it off.
Shingle can be much worse. They come back a second and third time. Itās rare that they do the third time, but why would you want to chance even the second time?
Itās also rare that they come back, but why chance postherpetic neuralgia?
It can always get worse.
The Shingrix shots wiped me out! Achy and extremely sluggish for several days. Doc said the vaccine is so robust because it is designed to trigger a strong immune response to ensure the body can effectively fight off the virus. I had a friend who got shingles on her face and her eye - her suffering was enough for me to take the side effects of the shots despite my being uncomfortable.
First shot was a kick in the ass! I was down for three days. Second shot was a breeze by comparison. After watching my mom suffer for over two years with excruciating Shingles pain, it was nothing. I'll take the shot every time.
I had the same experience after the first shot and I'm hoping desperately that I have the same situation as you after the second one which I need to do soon.
I'm sorry to tell you but I got both shots on schedule and got shingles the next January. It isn't that uncommon. I think I got a milder case though and probably because of the vaccines and the fact that I figured it out fast enough to get to urgent care and start on the anti-virals pretty quickly. Still do NOT recommend.
I think it is effective for over like 90%, I've seen some that say 97% of people so definitely still get it. I was just one of the very few unlucky ones. It is good to know that it CAN still happen so that if something suspicious happens you don't totally rule it out and say naw, can't be shingles.
Had no problem with first one but I was a little sick with the second for about 4 days. Fever around 100.4, chills, achy muscles. But not bad. Just means the immune system is working.
I had no problem with either shot. Much better than getting shingles. A co worker struggled with shingles on and off for years. I felt terrible for him.
Wow. Wish that was available 18 years ago. There is one month of my life I could have gotten back. If you have not had shingles I highly recommend getting the shot. You do not want to go through what I went through. It left me with permanent nerve damage :( I was in my 30ās.
That second shot KICKED MY ASS. It felt like having Covid. Had to call in sick for one day, but then the next day felt a lot better. And, like everyone says, itās still better than getting Shingles!!
When I got mine, I was good for about 2 days, and then it knocked on my ass. Just don't forget to get the second shot in 6 months, or it's all for not. In the end, it's worth it, cause you don't have to worry about shingles anymore.
So I got both. 2nd kicked my butt, so I guess I'm a buttercup.
I failed to ask, though, how often I should get one.
I have a friend that got shingles, unactivated, and lost the control of the right side of his face. So I don't mind being a buttercup to prevent that. Just not sure of cadence.
Ugh, I've never had any issues with any vaccine, incl COVID, except after my 2nd shingles vaccine. I felt really sick and passed out in my kitchen (ceramic tiles, ouch). GOOD LUCK!
Got my 2nd shingles and my annual flu and Covid booster, all at once, in 2 shots last fall. Omg. Omfg. I felt ill for 3 days. I should've known because the first shingles shot kicked my butt.
I took it as a good sign that my body was having a robust reaction.
Get some rest, but itās worth it. My wife had shingles on her face near her eye. The doctor told her if it got into her eye it could have caused permanent damage, including blindness, in that eye.
I got my first Covid shot at the same time as my first shingles shot. Then got the second shingles shot with a flu shot. Do not recommend. In the bright side, it sure made subsequent Covid and flu shots not seem so bad in comparison.
I got my 2nd dose yesterday. I feel like ass right now. Curled up on the couch wishing I could fall asleep, hoping a reddit distraction will get me there.
Itās not /that/ bad, but youāll want to take a day or two off of work just in case. For most people Iāve talked to the vaccine is like having a horrible flu for about 24-36 hours and worse than the Covid vaccines were in terms of really amping up the immune system and suffering the symptoms of that.
So much better than the alternative. My dad never got measles vaccine and never got measles until his 40s. Bad. Got shingles in 50s. Bad. Got shingles vacc but measles was too new/strong. Got shingles again. Its no joke for sure.
I had chicken pox as a kid and the worldās mildest case of shingles a few years ago (felt like an itchy rash on my back, I thought Iād gotten poison ivy after mowing my lawn) and got to urgent care in time for an anti-viral. Iām in no way an anti-vaxxer and Iām up to date w Covid and flu vaccines, but for some reason I cannot bring myself to get the Shingrix vaccine. My primary care Dr always checks in about it at my yearly physical and I donāt have a valid reason for not getting it other than I know Guillain Barre syndrome can be a side effect. I donāt make sense.
My first one wasn't that bad, but the second one kicked my ass for 3 or 4 days. Good luck and remember, not having shingles is worth a few days of feeling crappy
1st: slightly sore arm.
2nd: fever, body aches, exhaustion for 1.5 days.
Worth it!
My friend had shingles in her 40s. She was miserable for almost a month: rash, facial palsy, severe body aches, fever, swelling.

I got my first shot last month the same day as I got the flu and the covid shot. The next day was rough. Waiting my months to go back and get my 2nd shingle shot.
The only vaccines that have kicked my ass were the Covid vaccines. I just had another tetanus shot a few months ago and nothing but a sore arm for a day. Same with both shingles shots.
Just got my second yesterday. Feeling pretty sore and stiff all over. Worse than the first one, for me anyway. Worth it though.
Gonna work out and see if that loosens things up.
I guess I was lucky.Ā I had a little bit of arm soreness and felt really tired for several days but otherwise some of the covids kicked my butt way worse.Ā Ā
Then again, I've only had Shingrix #1 . . . . .
