Fast and Furious ruined street racing: “back in my day” it was informal and a good time, going out of the way to not be disruptive or dangerous. Now it’s a bunch of yahoos who just don’t care and are there just to be there.
The common sense solution to this is return the stolen property to the owner. It makes no sense for law enforcement to crush someone else’s property, that doesn’t punish the perpetrators and I would bet this isn’t actually how this program is intended to be used.
Um, the insurance company doesn't give you enough to buy a new car but pays you the depreciated value of the one that was stolen. Usually you will lose about 10% of the car's value when you drive it home and 20% in the first year. So, the insurance company doesn't buy you a new car.
I have a policy where within the first few years I get a new equivalent model.
And the insurance on my classic is enough to get me the same car, and I get first dibs on buying my car back with that payout.
Let’s say they do that, now imagine someone bought a car with good credit then looses there job or something medically happens in there life, they loose income or the ability to work, credit takes a hit. No longer can they get as nice of a car and they are out a car.
Thats great but everyone else will pay more in premiums because of this. Crushing something that has a value to scare and potentially deter criminals is pointless and wasteful.
Crush the car, too. Like others have said - after it's been thrashed you probably don't want it back... No telling what kinds of hidden damage have been done. Take the insurance money and buy another one.
> Take the insurance money and buy another one.
Hell no, money can't replace the time, energy, and memories I have with my car. I'd rather have the choice to restore it again than never have the option
YES! If someone stole my Stingray, I want the thief crushed and my beloved car back. Thanks for posting because so many people on here are assuming things that aren't reality for most of us. 👍🏼👍🏼❗️
> I would bet this isn’t actually how this program is intended to be used.
You might be right but that needs to be reviewed and resolved in the policy writing process. I've had to see the headache that is taking legislation and finding a way to implement it while it's written contradictory to its intent.
> It makes no sense for law enforcement to crush someone else’s property,
Lots of punitive laws make no sense. People generally don't care, especially those who assume the law is "fair". There are even those who know how the world is, but feel like it's okay for 100 innocents to be punished, so long as 1 guilty person is caught (but only when they won't be one of the innocents).
Correct... This "article" saying the people who are doing this often times treat their car like their baby. Uhhhh, what the what?!?!?!? Are you seeing the same videos I am??? These people don't give a shit about these cars. They're probably stolen.
Impounding and then running them over with a steam roller like it's a cartoon.... Isn't going to do anything.
Also the whole notion of just taking people's property and destroying it is absurdly ridiculous.
Politicians just saying rubbish
problem is I think they're trying to roll a couple of different communities into one. There are street racers out there with their own cars and they do treat their cars well, albeit they do put the utmost pressure on their engines and tend to destroy them. These are the guys that go out at night find a straight stretch of road and will even heat up the road and use stuff to heat up the tires for drag racing. Then there are these intersection take over events, I'd say a good majority of the cars involved in the actual intersection are stolen and the drivers don't care. There are those however that do love their that go and will park up close so are they going to round up all the cars parked up around the intersection? What happens to the people that live on that street that get caught up in it? Then you have car meets where people will go out to a parking lot and someone will come up and do some shit and bring the cops. 98% of the people that do that just love their cars and want a chill meet. The ones coming up and ruining it for the rest of them run and the cops will end up taking these peoples cars.
Well, yes and no... But you're right about rolling all "car guys" into one bubble and that's very wrong.
There's 'car show guy'... He's at cars and coffee in his never-seen-rain Corvette or Ferrari that he just wants to endlessly talk about .. that guy babies his car. It's more like a Rolex than a car to that person. That's the only group that fits in to whatever politician was talking about babying your car... And it's nonsense because that demographic is not doing street takeovers.
Then you have actual car guys that do track/ drift/ rally/ motorsports. We beat the snot out of our cars....and not going to this nonsense.
Then you have basically your outlaws.
There are drag strips everywhere.... If you're racing at 1am, you're doing it to be an outlaw.
There is organized drifting all over the place...
you're doing street takeovers to be an outlaw.same thing with the weaving through traffic bull shit... You're doing it to be an outlaw.
I'm aware.... Like any blanket statement, of course you can find a use case to poke holes in it.... But my point is how silly this article is.
I guess firstly would be the point that street racers and takeover mobs are not the same thing.
But aside from that, most street racers have a drag strip within two hours of them... Or at least they did, to your point... And if they had actually used it, it wouldn't have closed
To be fair if I’m weaving in and out of traffic, it’s not that I want to be an outlaw. I just get pissed at people chilling in the left hand lane and I got another job I’m trying get to. I’m also not posting it up on YouTube.
As someone who cares way too much about cars, this creates a worrying standard for destroying vehicles that could be very special but just driven by idiots.
In England, there was a one-off BMW M3 touring (F series) that got crushed as an example. Made me sick
Already pretty common. A few years ago Ontario and Quebec were doing the same stunt with impounded JDM cars, and a lolt of these street takeover dickwads have hard to find stuff like Chevy SSs, Hellcats, etc.
No. You can't put a direct profit incentive behind this, or there will be pressure to confiscate more and more vehicles. Proceeds should go to children with cancer or subsidizing drivers ed.
One of the cities in my metro region seizes the cars and then turns them into unmarked cop cars.
It's fucking hilarious seeing someone pulled over by a riced out Porsche with racing decals.
High Point North Carolina apparently had a pursuit Ferrari that they seized off someone and converted.
Is getting taken to jail in a Ferrari like getting driven to prom in a limo?
But he watched Fast and Furious last week and it showed him how these racers have a connection to their cars! They’ll be off the streets in no time!
/s
If only manufacturers would do more to prevent easy theft of their vehicles.
They’ve gotten really lacks with security of keyless vehicles in particular, and we’re all paying the price for it. It’s unacceptable.
Is it though? There are a handful of examples I'm aware of like the 2010s BMW key spoofing thing, but I'm fully aware from reading about it before that the vast majority of cars stolen had either a key somewhere inside, or was left running while the driver went into a store or their home and an opportunistic person jumped in and took it.
Someone did this downtown the other month and quickly abandoned the car about 3 blocks later when they realized there was a baby in a baby seat in the back. Didn't want the kidnapping charge smoke on top of grand theft auto.
Could be. I’m not up on all the technologies used to steal modern cars. Don’t really care cuz I’m not a thief lol.
I just know I see a lot of posts in the various subs about thefts. Full size GM trucks, Camaro, Stellantis sports cars, etc. people installing kill switch’s, programmed button sequences in order to start the car, etc.
To be fair, maybe with keyed ignitions it was just as frequent, idk. But either way seems like OEMs could do better if it were something they cared about.
Would like PDX if there was slightly less walking involved, it feels like going from rental garage to the terminal is awfully far, and then the gates are a bit spread out too. Still vastly better than LAX and their stupid buses for everything.
>It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the expression "as pretty as an airport". Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort.
-Douglas Adams
And even if it isn't stolen, crushing cars instead of just selling them is a massive waste of money and waste of resources.
And sorta an insane response to street racing anyways.
I live somewhere with similar draconian laws and it has done nothing except given police even more leverage to be judge and jury.
Exactly.
Firesale their Mercedes and then take the money and hand the money to a women's shelter, safe injection site, food bank or hell just use it to pay for taxi rides at the nearest pub during a drinking & driving campaign.
Crushing the vehicle is a complete waste of resources.
Stealing a car should be an automatic 10 year prison sentence. It's not something you accidentally do, or do because you're desperate (like someone stealing groceries or baby formula).
Fuck'em.
Also the fact that I’m sure the legislation will be abused… Any new “toy” a PD has, they’re going to want to “play” with.
I know in some locations, race “attendees” can get ticketed for illegal racing as well.
I can totally foresee a situation where some kid borrows their parent’s car to “go see a movie” but then attends a street race. Especially if the teen gets mouthy with a cop or whatever they can still get charged for street racing.
Or perhaps the cops do a similar sting… and some random young persons, fitting a specific demographic just happen to be nearby and they get lumped in with everyone else.

Most vehicles have liens on them. Violation of the property rights if the lien holder to crush it or damage in any way. Converts secured debt to unsecured debt without due process.
Everyone is forgetting, the police will be crushing bank owned vehicles. Do yall think the people at the banks are going to sit idle on this…😂
This has small chance of actually passing
That will go unpaid….the types that do this will default (if they were actually making payments) then declare bankruptcy when they rack up enough debt, that gets passed onto everyone else.
This is not a sound plan by any means, it’s an act to draw attention to the issue without ever really thinking it will pass imo
The people who “swim” through traffic and come within an inch of people’s cars while swerving in and out of lanes at 80mph should be publicly executed on the side of the road and there’s nothing that can convince me otherwise.
god yes!! i can't believe its become commonplace where kids are racing like GTA on crowded freeways here in LA. WTF? ppl have little to no respect for others' life & property. I hate to blame social media but there are so many under 25s who seem to be disconnected from each other & get their thrills from their online persona.
I downvoted you and I only use the left lane for passing.
People who cut up/swim through traffic tend to travel at speeds that are far beyond the overall flow of traffic.
I mean, I can only be so proud via text. It's obvious at least 4 folks do not understand left lane is for passing. Get in, get out, quit fucking about, the left lane is not your spouse.
It’s annoying though when nobody abides by it and all highway lanes are completely full of cars though
It effectively just becomes fast lane bc you’re constantly passing / going faster than the lane on your right
I think the downvoters are assuming that you're defending the swimmers. But I agree with you - left lane hogs are definitely contributing to the problem. Plenty of oblivious drivers near me who don't even notice emergency vehicles behind them.
Media needs to stop calling these take over idiots “street racers.” They aren’t. They are the anarchists of the automotive world. I’d be curious the percentage of cars involved in these that are stolen.
It’s going to take a lot more than crushing the cars to shut these down.
These cars should be sent on those government auction sites. Also im pretty sure 90% of these takeover cars are stolen, so this literally just hurts everybody
I'm from Louisville which is where this stuff is mainly being used, its such a cluster fuck and crushing cars is the worst they could do.
We have the laziest cops ever. Seriously. They cracked down on street racing because when news started reporting on takeovers shutting down intersections and parts of highways. No way they believe they're the same, but takeovers being shutdown require attentative policing, while street racing requires a lot less.
Even worse, instead of actually street racing, its devolved into "street racing or someone with a fast looking car doing something the officer didn't like". We have a huge street rod event that fills our fairground. The strip next to it gets filled with spectators, turning into multiple car meet after parties. Its fun to sit outside the gates and watch all the cars come out. There's always a large police presence.
I bring that up, because the last event, there was a C10 pulling out of a lot there by the police. He cracked the throttle a little bit turning onto the main road, supposedly because of low idle on a big cam car. He didn't do some burnout, or get sideways, just kinda cracked the tires a little bit. The police impounded his car, which whether or not it was intentional, is still a huge over reaction. If that keeps happening Itll affect attendance to the show, which brings a lot of money to our city. I've also been hearing about cars getting impounded for not-street racing, but nothing as specific as that. They ruined our chances of PGA events, now working on anything car centric.
Oh, and to add to that, I've been to night meets where everyone was having a peaceful time, until huge groups of mopars show up. Theyll do burnouts until police arrive, then dip. 100% of the time the cops just beeline to the group just having a car meet and kick them out.
Why crush perfectly good cars? Sell them off on auctions and the bill of transport should go to the speeder. They are irresponsible but shouldn't punish the vehicle.
We’re talking about how crushing these clapped out race cars instead of reselling them again to the types of people who would buy a clapped out race car is a good thing. What exactly is your defense for the latter?
You think crushing a few out of 280M cars in this country is the solution to crime? There are plenty of junk cars in the used car market. Why would this be any different?
Crushing the worst offenders out of the 280 mil I think is a good idea yes. Those junk cars don’t attract the same type of buyer, these people aren’t looking at pt cruisers. And unless you have statistics on the maxima quote I’m ignoring it.
Crushing a half dozen cars is not going to stop these takeovers because they will lose their car *regardless of whether it's crushed or not*. These guys have no morals and aren't concerned about the negative impact of crushing a car that is still good.
Sell the car as is. Or strip it out for parts. Crushing it is terrible for a perfectly good car was driven by some idiots.
I drive a red 2023 cayman, do you know the number of g35’s with a tune have tried to start a pull with me? Alot, I’m tired of it and want these cars off the road, permanently.
>Stripping or selling the car introduces financial incentives for confiscations which make it ripe for abuse.
This is like saying we should stop sending kids to school because some teachers take advantage of kids sexually
Are you serious? This is like asking me to explain how $200 is more than $0
You get $0 for crushing a car. Even if you sell a car for $200, that more than $0.
If you don't understand how $200 is more than $0, you need help.
Lmfao that’s not what you said tho you brought some sexual assault bullshit into the equation that didn’t make sense. Stop deflecting end explain that shit.
It’s removing them from circulation that is the end goal. I don’t care about morals, I care about the end result making a difference. Stripping or selling the car introduces financial incentives for confiscations which make it ripe for abuse.
It wont make a difference
>Crushing a half dozen cars is not going to stop these takeovers because they will lose their car regardless of whether it's crushed or not.
The problem with the second part of this idea is that people will and do keep driving regardless of whether or not they have a plastic card in their wallet anymore.
It’s also bad for the environment to just waste cars like that. All that work I put into saving old junkers just to see new cars get crushed? I agree just sell them
Plus, I won't make enough money in my whole life to afford a lot of these 100k cars and keep upgrading, if I want to drive a dream car I (my personal greed speaking here) need an auction. Porches are expensive, auction would be a good way to get them.
The most expensive Porsche is a cheap Porsche. If someone wasn't able to pay the bills, or if they lost it due to street racing, what makes you think they'd be financially stable and/or conscientious enough to properly maintain their car?
Hey bro, I just hope you're trolling, but I notice you have been downvoted to karma hell. I'm going to indulge you, or just let you know.
Yes. Everything is in fact bad for the environment. Literally everything we do, produces byproducts that our body cannot use, these are toxic substances. Sometimes we get lucky and there is an organism that can handle that byproduct and turn it into something more stable (think stuff that further eats our poop and grows like the bacteria in swamps).
One of the oldest known versions of this was the great oxygenation event. About 3 billion years ago, a very industrious and crafty bacteria merged with a proto-chloroplast (the stuff that makes plants green). This resulted in the organism being able to perform photosynthesis, turning carbon dioxide to sugar using sunlight, but the trade off by product was oxygen (the stuff that we need to breathe). This was known as the "Great Oxygenation Event", and it was responsible for an estimated 99.9% loss in diversity around the world. Basically oxygen is nice, but is highly electronegative and will steal electrons, creating things called ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) which can literally eat though any organic matter (Like how peroxide bubbles on the wound)
But our ancestors were crafty and some survived this. Eventually life is made. And we come about. Since humans have Been on this planet, we have left a mark in the past. We can see this, in glacier ice we change atmospheric carbon contents. Basically as ice forms bubbles of the atmosphere are trapped away forever, and when you test ice from a long time ago you can tell the atmospheric contents. We know it was humans because there is a marked increase in carbon dioxide around the world starting nearly 300,000 years ago.
In 1200s when Genghis khan ravaged Asia and Asia Minor, we can see the carbon levels drop because there were less humans burning stuff to stay warm. Tangent aside.
Everything we will do will create a negative effect on the environment, but... We can't just sit around and need to do things so we have an objective. To minimize the damage, if a mosquito lands on your testicles smashing it with all mighty force wouldn't be ideal but a slap and taking a bit of bruising might be alright, same way. When you build anything you displace organisms, you uproot trees and habitats. That's why we usually also develop land to house displaced organisms. The needs of people means sometimes an owl has to move homes, you can't justify freezing humans for a fucking owl.
When we make cars, we destroy the environment. The gas to heat and power the electrical diggers and lights in the mines. The explosives to dislodge ores, the gas to transport the ores to a site, the gas to heat the ores, then smelt them, then transport them to metal factories. Then again to make metal into a car. The plastic that's added to make the interior, the leather, the cloth, the dyes and paint. It all makes pollution.
Now say, you have already destroyed all this stuff and have a fully functioning car. You've already done the damage. When you total the car and crumple it, now you have to landfill it. Heat it and melt it down again. All that's extra pollution that will eventually happen. But we can mitigate it, not slap the balls with all mighty strength, and allow the functioning car to serve out its purpose. Yes it's gonna burn gas to drive, but it's better than to make it only to destroy it.
Hopefully that makes sense to you. I'm not giving you 4 years worth of biology, ecology, anthropology, and history courses for a single comment.
I agree with this, absolutely confiscate the vehicles and resell them at auction, use the proceeds for charities or to help fund first responders or something
“We could do a press conference and pull out all of those cars out here and get like a steam roller and roll over a Corvette or something, that would be pretty neat,” he told the news outlet. “We’re either going to cut it down by convincing them that it’s not worth it, or we’re going to take their means by which to do it.”
"Pretty neat" would also be having them come to the auction and see people houd over the vehicle they so eagerly abused. Using the money to improve our piss poor infrastructure. The amount of money generated should go directly into infrastructure and civil services. Nowhere else.
Two reasons.
One, to send a message.
Two, to remove financial incentive for the government to take your car.
These are both pretty big. You want more civil asset forfeiture? No, you do not.
>Two, to remove financial incentive for the government to take your car.
This was my first thought as well, I'm going to need a very narrow definition of this new law because I can see some meat head local cop saying doing 15 over is street racing and crushing your car instead of giving you the ticket.
Oh definitely. Like it needs to be defined as an organized event with an audience, or with clearly multiple participants waiting turns.
Someone spontaneously having a 0-40 stop light race shouldn't be subject to the same thing as people going 120 MPH vs another car.
Another big thing is simply liability -- What happens if the PO had drugs hidden somewhere, vehicle gets seized and then the next owner gets caught with them?
Also a lot of these cars are modified in a way that makes them illegal to drive as-is on public roads; auctioning them off can be an interesting proposition. Usually they would require the owner to make changes on their own dime to deal with these issues ...
I can only point to the problem they had with selling off functional, seized ATVs in Philadelphia: the owners, or a surrogate, just bought them back at auction.
I agree that it's sensational and not likely to have any affect crushing good cars, just letting you know why one city is crushing perfectly good machines.
Yeah that's fine, the surrogate/owner just paid twice for the same shit. And if he does it again, we are back to square one. The real winner is the system making money off the idiot. If he crashes, with a prior, then he is bigger fucked. Having a buy back gives money to the system that it really needs.
The rich ones, yeah. But how much do we want to bet most high value street race cars aren't even owned and are still financed, and that person is now underwater on a loan they have to pay in addition to trying to get another loan for another car.
There aren't many people who are 1) dumb enough to street race and 2) have the money and credit score to keep buying new cars.
Yeah and most likely that will cost them more money, versus purchasing their old car back via some police resale program. But honestly, I don’t even care about logistics anyway. My family shares the public roads with these people. Anyone who’s sick enough to put their lives on the line in order to cosplay as a race car driver, they just deserve to have their car crushed. Even if it’s only to “rub it in” for their punishment. So be it. Should be required to watch as they crush it and have their reaction video taped for the public to enjoy.
Well, there's been some better-sounding alternate policies suggested elsewhere in this thread, likely by people of varying political inclination.
But if you ask me, takeovers have risen at the same time as other "antisocial" and "delinquent" behavior and have nothing to do with the actual car community. I think the most effective measure against takeovers would be something that generally discourages destructive behavior - maybe not even a law enforcement policy, but a cultural or social change.
I would say the difference here is cost. Buying back your ATV for a couple grand is a bit different than buying back a car for 10's of thousands. Especially when I'd bet many of these "take over" participants still have payments due on the car. They're going to be stuck paying the bank for a crushed car, I doubt they will be able to take another loan to buy the car back at auction.
The owners of the seized vehicles could be barred from owning them again, and if they keep doing it over and over again, eventually they will run out of cash
Nah. The problem with street racing is people forget how serious it really is. Sometimes innocent families die because of street racers’ stupidity, before they’re ever arrested. Make an example of the ones they catch and hopefully deter others
“We could do a press conference and pull out all of those cars out here and get like a steam roller and roll over a Corvette or something, that would be pretty neat,” he told the news outlet. “We’re either going to cut it down by convincing them that it’s not worth it, or we’re going to take their means by which to do it.”
"That would be pretty neat" lmao for real, they are just over grown man children who peaked in highschool.
Most vehicles have liens on them. Violation of the property rights if the lien holder to crush it or damage in any way. Converts secured debt to unsecured debt without due process.
A more effective solution: must have valid license and insurance prior to purchasing a car… car owner is fully responsible for lending out vehicle to a non-licensed driver. Too many (ghetto) family members are okay lending out their vehicles to (even more ghetto) unlicensed family members and friends.
What is even more heartbreaking is when people illegally import cars & they get crushed. I know they broke the law, but why punish the car... Ive seen pictures of quite precious cars getting crushed
Pretty sure this violates the 4th and 8th amendment in America. Timbs vs Indiana set precedent that the punishment cannot exceed the maximum penalty for the fine, which means that if you’re cutting up in say … a BMW M3 G80 which can be currently valued at anything between $60k-$110k, the maximum fine for the crime of “street racing” will need to exceed the value of the car in order for the government to even be have a chance to confiscate and forfeit the car. Otherwise, the first time they get sued in court over this, the courts will side with the defendant and Kentucky will have to dish out quite the settlement.
...just part them out. Would generate revenue for the office and keep parts in circulation, especially for older vehicles that are harder to find them for.

This is the most dumb-ass, I don't have anything to add, buys a Toyota Mirai level of brilliant, take I've seen all day. Politicians talk out of their butt 70% of the time and 100% of the time that get reported on. By *The Times*, the *New York Post*, *Fox News*, *Motor1*, *MotorTrend*, and literally everyone else because it fucking matters. Beyond the fact that it that they're talking about doing this to gauge public acceptance, this news has been reported on by other publications as well, so unless you want go full Ostrich Furry do us all a favor and click elsewhere.
It's definitely too restrictive. The top 10 links on the sub's front page are often days old, and there is no point in even joining the comments because it's a conversation that was over and done with 24-48 hours ago.
It's a balance. There's a lot of garbage articles out there and sites that are scraping the bottom of the barrel for content. Most of the banned sites have 100% earned that ban, whether it's because of downright inaccurate reporting that's always false or if it's because the articles are so politically bent or are driving an agenda that they're just not good-faith conversations happening.
Personally, I haven't looked at the list of banned links in a while but the ones I remember seeing definitely deserved to be there.
It's just unfortunate that that's kind of the state of automotive journalism nowadays, even the big players like Car and Driver, Road & Track, and the other enthusiast magazines have gotten notably worse with their daily articles.
I think the shift towards YouTube and social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook has hurt them too because now they have to try to draw people in and that's taken over having good articles.
Do anything else purposeful with the vehicles vs crush.
Ban on plastic bags/straws but then needlessly trash 2 tons of plastic and metal. Poor use waste is poor no matter the reason.
Plenty of better ways to punish
This is the equivalent of fining them and then lighting the money on fire.
If the vehicle is used in a crime and they are convicted (not a moving violation), then I have zero issue with confiscating the vehicle and auctioning it / selling it to a junk yard. Provided that the proceeds don’t go to law enforcement. But destroying the vehicle is childish and shortsighted grandstanding.
Maybe I'm jaded having moved from Portland but street takeovers out there get insane. Closing down roads for hours and people always get injured. If you can't use a car responsibly you shouldn't get to keep it. If you want to drive fast take your car to a track
Street takeovers aren't about "driving fast," it's about abusing stolen vehicles.
Don't confuse the long and rich history of semi-responsible street racing with takeover criminals.
The issue is these children (I call them that because they can't act like responsible adults) very often don't own the cars they're whipping around and destroying; they stole them. If you're going to crush one of these cars there's a high chance you're destroying the property of an innocent 3rd party who had their car stolen.
It's better to revoke their driving privileges (which won't stop them because they do this shit without licenses anyways), try them as adults if they're minors, make it a felony, and serve some crazy jail time as a stop gap.
literally just sell it, crushing it like that is selfish, immoral, performative nonsense.
sure they can buy it back, but they can also just buy a different one and start over
Here in the NY Metro area there is something like this going on already but with dirtbikes and ATVs seized from dirtbike gangs. They get crushed if confiscated or found by the police.
The problem as someone else has stated is that 90% of the time it was stolen property.
I'm worried that this would be another tool to be misused like civil asset forfeiture has been.
What safeguards would be in place to stop this being abused by police against people or groups they don't like.
I've had my family stopped for 'searches' where cops went looking for anything of value on a long trip, & questioned to that effect on the roadside. And they're the epitome of paleness. I can only imagine that it's worse for other groups.
Oh absolutely 💯
Imagine you are the type to go out racing and this is the law, you aren’t going to stop. You might be embolden to do something extra risky to get away… not a good look for the city. This won’t pass

I think this could be good, but the more you increase the cost to the accused, the higher the burden of due dilligence should be. If a cop can just hit you with a charge and go to court to hear a judge tell you cops don't lie, then this will certainly be abused by someone.
But I agree, get off the fucking streets idiots.
It's unfortunate that safe racing has so many barriers to entry, mostly being cost.
Let's give the government (a potentially corrupt one according to residents in this thread) more power that they can easily abuse to destroy property that might not even be owned by the actual criminals (stolen or financed), damage the environment, and further destroy the relationship between car enthusiasts and law enforcement, all because of a very very small subset of idiots that get into the news once every couple months.
What’s insane is the asymmetric punishment for victimless crimes. It’s one thing if someone is hurt or killed, it’s another for property damage, but for the state to target and punish street racers in particular is evil shit.
How many other activities are there that “put people in danger?” Are they going to crush cars of regular stupid fuck drivers on the road that don’t street race? Are they going to crush the guns of unsafe owners? Are they going to throw people in jail when health safety standards are not met?
The focus on punishing car enthusiasts is fucking evil and will radicalize a large group of people for no reason other than stupidity.
These fucks give enthusiasts like me a bad name. This isn't going 10-20 over the speed limit on a highway, this is stopping traffic and driving in a way that massively increases the chance that someone is hurt of killed. Crushing the cars should just be the first step, license suspension for a 5 years for the first offense followed by a lifetime driving ban should for any further ones is the logical next step. If anyone wants to drift, race or generally be an obnoxious asshole they should go to a track like the rest of us. Zero sympathy here.
I agree that there should be punishment for stopping traffic for non emergency purposes. Give them a fine or put them in jail.
The purpose of the post was to draw attention to the focus on street racers while ignoring every other injustice in society.
It's all about deterrence. If the punishment is sufficiently harsh then fewer idiots would do this. Current punishments clearly don't work so we need to come up with new ones that actually seem psychologically targeted like these ones are. I agree there's a lot of injustice around but that doesn't justify putting others at risk and being a criminal. That's like those people that justify looting and arson or even terrorism because of "root causes".
Victimless? Are you fucking kidding me? These pieces of shit are a massive problem for safety and quality of life.
I agree with you that this policy is stupid, but only because it addresses symptoms, not the root causes and it's impossible to enforce.
I am purposefully making the distinction between actual harm and annoyance.
Those who cause actual harm should be punished the same extent as anyone else, and those who are a public nuisance should be punished accordingly as well.
Asymmetric punishment is evil.
So are we burning a house down that has a loud house party?
Do we kill a horse that poops on public property?
Are we executing a kid (or their parent) for letting them cry in a movie?
I doubt many in here are okay with street racing though destroying property as a punishment seems like shit they did in the Colonies.
Please don't give them ideas.
There's more people okay with that kind of action than you think. People will do drastic things when they're being told basically 24/7 that they're going to become the victim of a crime the moment they step outside.
““A lot of people who are doing this, they think of their car as their baby,” he told the news outlet. “They’ll think twice about racing their cars on our public streets and endangering our people.””
I don’t think the idiots who are doing these stupid takeover events care about their cars, considering most of them are stolen anyways.
This is risky though. If there's a business behind it some people might be encouraged to take nice sports cars from young people to get a bonus in their paycheck.
THIS! Put them in prison and they won't be around to do this kind of crap. Lots of the cars involved with this are stolen, so taking it away from them is not going to be a deterrent. They will just got steal another one. (Although, that is something else they won't be able to do from a prison cell).
The ones that are owned by the people committing these acts should not be crushed either. What a waste of resources all around. Due process should be given and if guilt is proven, the cars should be auctioned off. The proceeds then can be used to clean up the damage these stunts caused, instead of sticking tax payer with the bill.
Two huge reasons I don’t see this as responsible (well, waste of $, environment…) as much as people wish: it’s going to give that much more incentive to flee and never stop for police at all costs creating many more dangerous high speed chases, but crushing cars is going to be a massive liability for department-lots of these cars are stolen or rentals, and you expect someone who outright owns a $100k car to just take it lying down while their car is to be crushed? People will be lawyered up to the teeth
Not reading all of that but I think the main point of the car crushing thing is to discourage other drivers from speeding and doing dumb stuff. You break the law and that whats happens to your car

Wait until they crush the wrong car and get a multi million dollar suit because of emotional distress and or something else odd…
It’s never a good idea to allow the government the ability to confiscate your property much less destroy it, then make you watch.
This guy sounds off his rocker
We already have prisons, probation, forced labor, and so many more methods of criminal justice.
We have to be less ok with the government just.... taking property and destroying it to get a rise out of the criminal. feel free to downvote, i do not support racing or "sideshows" and have a long comment history chastising boyracers on here to back that up.
This legislator, Jason Nemes, is one of the biggest "tough on crime" try-hards in the KY legislature. He's a straight up sadist when it comes to punishing anyone he perceives as "criminals." Last year, he sponsored bills that will charge homeless people with felonies for "public camping," and made it easier to charge children with capital crimes and other major felonies.
He's utterly ruthless and heartless.
I live in Louisville. This bill is incredible poorly constructed and more or less puts seizing cars at the discretion of police officers. Police officers do not have a great reputation in Louisville, and infamously lost their liability insurance for losing too many excessive force lawsuits.
Just my 2 cents from a car nerd living in this jurisdiction.
I don't think it will work a ton, no matter what the punishment is, they will always be people dumb enough to street race or do takeovers. Also a lot of vehicles at takeovers are stolen vehicles too. Not to mention it will increase the price of used cars as well since it will reduce the supply of them. If you don't think about this bill, it will make you feel good, but if you think about it, it won't help a ton
As long as they can specify it's solely for organized groups doing it I guess that's okay. But I'm worried what they'd count as "street racing". If I pull up to a light next to someone else in a cool car and we do a spirited pull to 60 is that a street race? What if I'm not next to anyone and just accelerate fast because it's fun? This seems like another situation where they take an example that's universally hated, like takeovers, and make harsh punishments that in reality will not be used against those people, and instead abused on anyone the cops feel like fucking with that day.
* A lot of those cars are stolen
* If not stolen, likely financed by people who have shit credit anyway. They have no sweat/blood equity in the car.
* The cars should be seized, titles branded, and sold at auction. Proceeds to go to pay for the operation
* None of this will ever happen
Ugh, stop fucking crushing and breaking useful, valuable cars. Auctions can be used to provide revenue to charities instead of being yet more crap on the pile.
Sell the cars at auction and donate the money to a traffic safety non profit. I get sending a message but it’s better the money get put to good use improving safety or helping victims.
Destroying the cars sends the wrong message. The cars are not the problem. The idiot drivers are.
Policy [discussion is welcome](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/wiki/politics). However, if your post involves politics AND CARS, please consider submitting to /r/CarsOffTopic.

I agree with harsh consequences, but crushing cars fucks us guys that want to keep our cars on the road forever. That’s just less spare parts for us later.
