If they're not stolen they should donate seized cars to monster jam, imagine how many views they'd get having grave digger crushing hellcats

Wouldn't it be best for the cars to be Auctioned off, or sold for parts instead of crushing them?

Yeah instead of crushing the cars they could just strip and part out the cars

Fast and Furious ruined street racing: “back in my day” it was informal and a good time, going out of the way to not be disruptive or dangerous. Now it’s a bunch of yahoos who just don’t care and are there just to be there.

Take over kids and those morons who “cut up” or “swim” through traffic need this to happen to them.

Only issue is 9/10 times the car is someone else's stolen property. That's why this practice isn't adopted much elsewhere.
View on Reddit #39644194

GolfCoyote@reddit

The common sense solution to this is return the stolen property to the owner. It makes no sense for law enforcement to crush someone else’s property, that doesn’t punish the perpetrators and I would bet this isn’t actually how this program is intended to be used.

Would I even want my stolen and abused car back? Let the insurance company write me a check for a new one.
View on Reddit #39654896

bad2behere@reddit

Um, the insurance company doesn't give you enough to buy a new car but pays you the depreciated value of the one that was stolen. Usually you will lose about 10% of the car's value when you drive it home and 20% in the first year. So, the insurance company doesn't buy you a new car.
View on Reddit #39679458

MyName_isntEarl@reddit

I have a policy where within the first few years I get a new equivalent model. And the insurance on my classic is enough to get me the same car, and I get first dibs on buying my car back with that payout.
View on Reddit #39798482

AncientnUgly@reddit

Let’s say they do that, now imagine someone bought a car with good credit then looses there job or something medically happens in there life, they loose income or the ability to work, credit takes a hit. No longer can they get as nice of a car and they are out a car.

> It makes no sense for law enforcement to crush someone else’s property, Lots of punitive laws make no sense. People generally don't care, especially those who assume the law is "fair". View on Reddit #39654125

jrileyy229@reddit

Correct... This "article" saying the people who are doing this often times treat their car like their baby.  Uhhhh, what the what?!?!?!?  Are you seeing the same videos I am???  These people don't give a shit about these cars.  They're probably stolen.  Impounding and then running them over with a steam roller like it's a cartoon.... Isn't going to do anything.  Also the whole notion of just taking people's property and destroying it is absurdly ridiculous.  Politicians just saying rubbish
View on Reddit #39644534

ShiftBMDub@reddit

problem is I think they're trying to roll a couple of different communities into one. There are street racers out there with their own cars and they do treat their cars well, albeit they do put the utmost pressure on their engines and tend to destroy them. These are the guys that go out at night find a straight stretch of road and will even heat up the road and use stuff to heat up the tires for drag racing. Then there are these intersection take over events, I'd say a good majority of the cars involved in the actual intersection are stolen and the drivers don't care. There are those however that do love their that go and will park up close so are they going to round up all the cars parked up around the intersection? What happens to the people that live on that street that get caught up in it? Then you have car meets where people will go out to a parking lot and someone will come up and do some shit and bring the cops. 98% of the people that do that just love their cars and want a chill meet. The ones coming up and ruining it for the rest of them run and the cops will end up taking these peoples cars.
View on Reddit #39657510

jrileyy229@reddit

Well, yes and no...  But you're right about rolling all "car guys" into one bubble and that's very wrong. There's 'car show guy'... He's at cars and coffee in his never-seen-rain Corvette or Ferrari that he just wants to endlessly talk about ..  that guy babies his car.  It's more like a Rolex than a car to that person.  That's the only group that fits in to whatever politician was talking about babying your car... And it's nonsense because that demographic is not doing street takeovers. Then you have actual car guys that do track/ drift/ rally/ motorsports.  We beat the snot out of our cars....and not going to this nonsense. Then you have basically your outlaws. There are drag strips everywhere.... If you're racing at 1am, you're doing it to be an outlaw. There is organized drifting all over the place... you're doing street takeovers to be an outlaw.same thing with the weaving through traffic bull shit... You're doing it to be an outlaw.
View on Reddit #39658158

slamm3d68@reddit

There are not drag strips everywhere. Unfortunately drag strips are getting shut down left and right across the country.
View on Reddit #39672089

jrileyy229@reddit

I'm aware.... Like any blanket statement, of course you can find a use case to poke holes in it.... But my point is how silly this article is.  I guess firstly would be the point that street racers and takeover mobs are not the same thing.  But aside from that, most street racers have a drag strip within two hours of them... Or at least they did, to your point... And if they had actually used it, it wouldn't have closed
View on Reddit #39703925

slamm3d68@reddit

They rarely close from lack of use, they close due to city sprawl, noise complaints, and rising property value.

As someone who cares way too much about cars, this creates a worrying standard for destroying vehicles that could be very special but just driven by idiots. In England, there was a one-off BMW M3 touring (F series) that got crushed as an example. Made me sick

View on Reddit #39644748

10000Didgeridoos@reddit

Is it though? There are a handful of examples I'm aware of like the 2010s BMW key spoofing thing, but I'm fully aware from reading about it before that the vast majority of cars stolen had either a key somewhere inside, or was left running while the driver went into a store or their home and an opportunistic person jumped in and took it. Someone did this downtown the other month and quickly abandoned the car about 3 blocks later when they realized there was a baby in a baby seat in the back. Didn't want the kidnapping charge smoke on top of grand theft auto.

Could be. I’m not up on all the technologies used to steal modern cars. Don’t really care cuz I’m not a thief lol. I just know I see a lot of posts in the various subs about thefts. Full size GM trucks, Camaro, Stellantis sports cars, etc. people installing kill switch’s, programmed button sequences in order to start the car, etc. To be fair, maybe with keyed ignitions it was just as frequent, idk. But either way seems like OEMs could do better if it were something they cared about.

Also the fact that I’m sure the legislation will be abused… Any new “toy” a PD has, they’re going to want to “play” with. I know in some locations, race “attendees” can get ticketed for illegal racing as well. I can totally foresee a situation where some kid borrows their parent’s car to “go see a movie” but then attends a street race. Especially if the teen gets mouthy with a cop or whatever they can still get charged for street racing. Or perhaps the cops do a similar sting… and some random young persons, fitting a specific demographic just happen to be nearby and they get lumped in with everyone else.

I'm from Louisville which is where this stuff is mainly being used, its such a cluster fuck and crushing cars is the worst they could do. We have the laziest cops ever. Seriously. They cracked down on street racing because when news started reporting on takeovers shutting down intersections and parts of highways. No way they believe they're the same, but takeovers being shutdown require attentative policing, while street racing requires a lot less. Even worse, instead of actually street racing, its devolved into "street racing or someone with a fast looking car doing something the officer didn't like". We have a huge street rod event that fills our fairground. The strip next to it gets filled with spectators, turning into multiple car meet after parties. Its fun to sit outside the gates and watch all the cars come out. There's always a large police presence. I bring that up, because the last event, there was a C10 pulling out of a lot there by the police. He cracked the throttle a little bit turning onto the main road, supposedly because of low idle on a big cam car. He didn't do some burnout, or get sideways, just kinda cracked the tires a little bit. The police impounded his car, which whether or not it was intentional, is still a huge over reaction. If that keeps happening Itll affect attendance to the show, which brings a lot of money to our city. I've also been hearing about cars getting impounded for not-street racing, but nothing as specific as that. They ruined our chances of PGA events, now working on anything car centric. Oh, and to add to that, I've been to night meets where everyone was having a peaceful time, until huge groups of mopars show up. Theyll do burnouts until police arrive, then dip. 100% of the time the cops just beeline to the group just having a car meet and kick them out.

Flashy-Psychology-30@reddit

Hey bro, I just hope you're trolling, but I notice you have been downvoted to karma hell. I'm going to indulge you, or just let you know. Yes. Everything is in fact bad for the environment. Literally everything we do, produces byproducts that our body cannot use, these are toxic substances. Sometimes we get lucky and there is an organism that can handle that byproduct and turn it into something more stable (think stuff that further eats our poop and grows like the bacteria in swamps). One of the oldest known versions of this was the great oxygenation event. About 3 billion years ago, a very industrious and crafty bacteria merged with a proto-chloroplast (the stuff that makes plants green). This resulted in the organism being able to perform photosynthesis, turning carbon dioxide to sugar using sunlight, but the trade off by product was oxygen (the stuff that we need to breathe). This was known as the "Great Oxygenation Event", and it was responsible for an estimated 99.9% loss in diversity around the world. Basically oxygen is nice, but is highly electronegative and will steal electrons, creating things called ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) which can literally eat though any organic matter (Like how peroxide bubbles on the wound) But our ancestors were crafty and some survived this. Eventually life is made. And we come about. Since humans have Been on this planet, we have left a mark in the past. We can see this, in glacier ice we change atmospheric carbon contents. Basically as ice forms bubbles of the atmosphere are trapped away forever, and when you test ice from a long time ago you can tell the atmospheric contents. We know it was humans because there is a marked increase in carbon dioxide around the world starting nearly 300,000 years ago. In 1200s when Genghis khan ravaged Asia and Asia Minor, we can see the carbon levels drop because there were less humans burning stuff to stay warm. Tangent aside. Everything we will do will create a negative effect on the environment, but... We can't just sit around and need to do things so we have an objective. To minimize the damage, if a mosquito lands on your testicles smashing it with all mighty force wouldn't be ideal but a slap and taking a bit of bruising might be alright, same way. When you build anything you displace organisms, you uproot trees and habitats. That's why we usually also develop land to house displaced organisms. The needs of people means sometimes an owl has to move homes, you can't justify freezing humans for a fucking owl. When we make cars, we destroy the environment. The gas to heat and power the electrical diggers and lights in the mines. The explosives to dislodge ores, the gas to transport the ores to a site, the gas to heat the ores, then smelt them, then transport them to metal factories. Then again to make metal into a car. The plastic that's added to make the interior, the leather, the cloth, the dyes and paint. It all makes pollution. Now say, you have already destroyed all this stuff and have a fully functioning car. You've already done the damage. When you total the car and crumple it, now you have to landfill it. Heat it and melt it down again. All that's extra pollution that will eventually happen. But we can mitigate it, not slap the balls with all mighty strength, and allow the functioning car to serve out its purpose. Yes it's gonna burn gas to drive, but it's better than to make it only to destroy it. Hopefully that makes sense to you. I'm not giving you 4 years worth of biology, ecology, anthropology, and history courses for a single comment.

I can only point to the problem they had with selling off functional, seized ATVs in Philadelphia: the owners, or a surrogate, just bought them back at auction. But how much do we want to bet most high value street race cars aren't even owned and are still financed, and that person is now underwater on a loan they have to pay in addition to trying to get another loan for another car. There aren't many people who are 1) dumb enough to street race and 2) have the money and credit score to keep buying new cars.
View on Reddit #39671207

Yeah and most likely that will cost them more money, versus purchasing their old car back via some police resale program. But honestly, I don’t even care about logistics anyway. My family shares the public roads with these people. Anyone who’s sick enough to put their lives on the line in order to cosplay as a race car driver, they just deserve to have their car crushed. Even if it’s only to “rub it in” for their punishment. So be it. Should be required to watch as they crush it and have their reaction video taped for the public to enjoy.

But if you ask me, takeovers have risen at the same time as other "antisocial" and "delinquent" behavior and have nothing to do with the actual car community. I think the most effective measure against takeovers would be something that generally discourages destructive behavior - maybe not even a law enforcement policy, but a cultural or social change.

Pretty sure this violates the 4th and 8th amendment in America. Timbs vs Indiana set precedent that the punishment cannot exceed the maximum penalty for the fine, which means that if you’re cutting up in say … a BMW M3 G80 which can be currently valued at anything between $60k-$110k, the maximum fine for the crime of “street racing” will need to exceed the value of the car in order for the government to even be have a chance to confiscate and forfeit the car. Otherwise, the first time they get sued in court over this, the courts will side with the defendant and Kentucky will have to dish out quite the settlement.

What’s insane is the asymmetric punishment for victimless crimes. It’s one thing if someone is hurt or killed, it’s another for property damage, but for the state to target and punish street racers in particular is evil shit. How many other activities are there that “put people in danger?” Are they going to crush cars of regular stupid fuck drivers on the road that don’t street race? Are they going to crush the guns of unsafe owners? Are they going to throw people in jail when health safety standards are not met? The focus on punishing car enthusiasts is fucking evil and will radicalize a large group of people for no reason other than stupidity.
View on Reddit #39659705

EmergencyRace7158@reddit

These fucks give enthusiasts like me a bad name. This isn't going 10-20 over the speed limit on a highway, this is stopping traffic and driving in a way that massively increases the chance that someone is hurt of killed. Crushing the cars should just be the first step, license suspension for a 5 years for the first offense followed by a lifetime driving ban should for any further ones is the logical next step. If anyone wants to drift, race or generally be an obnoxious asshole they should go to a track like the rest of us. Zero sympathy here.
View on Reddit #39665043

TruculentSuckulent@reddit

I agree that there should be punishment for stopping traffic for non emergency purposes. Give them a fine or put them in jail. The purpose of the post was to draw attention to the focus on street racers while ignoring every other injustice in society.
View on Reddit #39665676

EmergencyRace7158@reddit

It's all about deterrence. If the punishment is sufficiently harsh then fewer idiots would do this. Current punishments clearly don't work so we need to come up with new ones that actually seem psychologically targeted like these ones are. I agree there's a lot of injustice around but that doesn't justify putting others at risk and being a criminal. That's like those people that justify looting and arson or even terrorism because of "root causes".
View on Reddit #39666131

AtomWorker@reddit

Victimless? Are you fucking kidding me? These pieces of shit are a massive problem for safety and quality of life. I agree with you that this policy is stupid, but only because it addresses symptoms, not the root causes and it's impossible to enforce.
View on Reddit #39661151

RedeemedWeeb@reddit

The issue is these laws will inevitably target all car enthusiasts, not just the idiots that think spinning out is a skill.
View on Reddit #39665748

TruculentSuckulent@reddit

I am purposefully making the distinction between actual harm and annoyance. Those who cause actual harm should be punished the same extent as anyone else, and those who are a public nuisance should be punished accordingly as well. Asymmetric punishment is evil.

So are we burning a house down that has a loud house party? Do we kill a horse that poops on public property? Are we executing a kid (or their parent) for letting them cry in a movie? I doubt many in here are okay with street racing though destroying property as a punishment seems like shit they did in the Colonies.
View on Reddit #39647900

Please don't give them ideas. There's more people okay with that kind of action than you think. People will do drastic things when they're being told basically 24/7 that they're going to become the victim of a crime the moment they step outside.

View on Reddit #39645156

THIS! Put them in prison and they won't be around to do this kind of crap. Lots of the cars involved with this are stolen, so taking it away from them is not going to be a deterrent. They will just got steal another one. (Although, that is something else they won't be able to do from a prison cell). The ones that are owned by the people committing these acts should not be crushed either. What a waste of resources all around. Due process should be given and if guilt is proven, the cars should be auctioned off. The proceeds then can be used to clean up the damage these stunts caused, instead of sticking tax payer with the bill.

Two huge reasons I don’t see this as responsible (well, waste of $, environment…) as much as people wish: it’s going to give that much more incentive to flee and never stop for police at all costs creating many more dangerous high speed chases, but crushing cars is going to be a massive liability for department-lots of these cars are stolen or rentals, and you expect someone who outright owns a $100k car to just take it lying down while their car is to be crushed? People will be lawyered up to the teeth
View on Reddit #39650719

This legislator, Jason Nemes, is one of the biggest "tough on crime" try-hards in the KY legislature. He's a straight up sadist when it comes to punishing anyone he perceives as "criminals." Last year, he sponsored bills that will charge homeless people with felonies for "public camping," and made it easier to charge children with capital crimes and other major felonies. He's utterly ruthless and heartless.

I live in Louisville. This bill is incredible poorly constructed and more or less puts seizing cars at the discretion of police officers. Police officers do not have a great reputation in Louisville, and infamously lost their liability insurance for losing too many excessive force lawsuits. Just my 2 cents from a car nerd living in this jurisdiction.

I don't think it will work a ton, no matter what the punishment is, they will always be people dumb enough to street race or do takeovers. Also a lot of vehicles at takeovers are stolen vehicles too. Not to mention it will increase the price of used cars as well since it will reduce the supply of them. If you don't think about this bill, it will make you feel good, but if you think about it, it won't help a ton

As long as they can specify it's solely for organized groups doing it I guess that's okay. But I'm worried what they'd count as "street racing". If I pull up to a light next to someone else in a cool car and we do a spirited pull to 60 is that a street race? What if I'm not next to anyone and just accelerate fast because it's fun? This seems like another situation where they take an example that's universally hated, like takeovers, and make harsh punishments that in reality will not be used against those people, and instead abused on anyone the cops feel like fucking with that day.

* A lot of those cars are stolen * If not stolen, likely financed by people who have shit credit anyway. They have no sweat/blood equity in the car. * The cars should be seized, titles branded, and sold at auction. Proceeds to go to pay for the operation * None of this will ever happen
