It seems like all fish and chips store I taste same, should I put malt vinegar on it?
eve_442012@reddit
you always add salt and vinegar. no questions asked. it just makes it taste wayyyy more flavoursome.

I usually stab my fish a few times with a fork so that the vinegar gets inside my fish. Chip shops never put enough on even if you ask for PLENTY!
TouristParticular219@reddit
Taste the chips first, then add the vinegar if its not vinegary enough for your taste

As a Canadian that loves malt vinegar on chips. It makes me sad that Sarsons is really hard to find here.
hardito-carlito2@reddit
As an English man it makes me proud you know our vinegar

I spent some time at Rothera. There are a few things that I now include in my life. Sarsons, Yorkshire Tea, sausage sarnie with brown sauce, and as mentioned HP (we can get that here.). I really do miss Black Sheep beer too

When I was abroad, I really missed soft wholewheat rolls filled with tangy Wensleydale and accompanied by some nutty brown ale. Omnomnom.

Do you have a Brit Specialty store close by? If not check Food Basics if you have one or Walmart

Between the internet and friends in the uk. I am set. I will look up food basics though. Thanks

Wish I had people back home to send me stuff

If you want, its entirely up to you personally I like a good sprinkling myself

Put the vinegar on first then the salt, that way the salt sticks to the chips and doesn't fall through them to the bottom...
f8rter@reddit
Always be insist on putting in on yourself or walk away
lagoon83@reddit
Don't do this, it's weirdly confrontational and could come across as rather entitled.
f8rter@reddit
Nope!
The application of salt and “non brewed condiment” to one’s own specific taste is critical
The guy/girl behind the counter will never get it right
lagoon83@reddit
But insisting that they let you do it rather than just asking, then walking off if they don't allow you to do it... Bit much, innit?
f8rter@reddit
Ask first obvs😏
You’re over thinking this 😂
Obvious_Arm8802@reddit
The vinegar in chip shops isn’t malt vinegar, in fact it’s not even vinegar of any type.
It’s ’non-brewed condiment’
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-brewed_condiment
Non-brewed condiment is a malt vinegar substitute created with water, acetic acid, flavourings and often caramel colour, generally used in fish and chip shops in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Breakwaterbot@reddit
That's great but they weren't asking that. They were asking how to use it and we all knew what they meant.
Obvious_Arm8802@reddit
Sorry. It’s just one of those interesting facts I don’t manage to get out very often.
UserCannotBeVerified@reddit
It's funny, I didn't know this until this week, where I've seen it on reddit 3 times now 😅
Breakwaterbot@reddit
Fair enough. I've always loved the thought of someone standing in a chippy and when they ask "do you want salt and vinegar?" They reply "Well, seeing as I don't see any vinegar here, no. But I'll happily have some of that non-brewed condiment and salt on my chips"

Malt vinegar I'd different from.chip shop "vinegar".
The chop shop stuff isn't really vinegar
Repulsive-Echidna-74@reddit
For full effect, you lick the salt off your thumb, drink a shot glass of vinegar and then suck a chip for 10 seconds
BigBunneh@reddit
You need to find a better chip shop then, the fish is so much better at a decent place, as is the batter. A decent shop will cook it fresh for you, and I like to ask for thinner batter too.
tom_l_92@reddit
They will ask if you want it or at least have in every chippy I’ve been to. If they don’t and you’re expected to apply it yourself just squirt it over everything. I’d say don’t go over the top initially as I’m assuming you haven’t tried it since you’ve asked how to. You can always add more if needed.
josh5676543@reddit
If you go to a proper chippy then they ask if you want salt and vinegar
