Ron Paul was cool before the Koch brothers and big oil financed the Tea Party movement, sucking up all his supporters and completely destroying the Republican party and bastardizing modern day Libertarians. You can directly trace the Ron Raul shitposting of 2008 to Trump's eventual 2016 victory.
Libertarianism sounds like a cool idea in general until you find out corporate tyranny is actually more pervasive than government tyranny, and it relies on the idea anything at all government is inherently bad always. Black and white thinking that doesn't hold up to anything.
Yeah except it's actually not because corporate tyranny is helpful to society by its nature while government tyranny almost always is very less efficient and effective and far more forceful and universal. As bad as Amazon is, they still provide a great service to humanity. How many government services can you really say to the same.
Sure corpos provide a service, but they're also uncaring and profit motivated.
Government sucks, but you cannot even pretend to elect a corporate official (unless you're rich, in some cases) despite them having so much influence on society, our personal lives, our environment, etc.
The entire idea is to balance innovation, private property and at the same time avoid us from being owned by 4 corporations dumping pollution into our rivers where every single property and item has to be rented from them. Without any regulation or consumer protection, that's exactly what would happen.
That's not true, corporations have tons of power over you as an individual even if it's not at the barrel of a gun or behind a barbed wire fence.
If we allow them to consolidate resources and power to an egregious extent, a simple blacklist can deem you unemployable for instance.
You need money to survive, and most of us have to get that by doing work for our employers. There's nothing wrong with that per se, you should need to contribute to do well; but this is a very powerful piece of leverage that can be used for coercion.
We already have problems with BlackRock and whatnot buying up a fuck ton of property in our current system, dubious mergers and anti competitive actions. It's often only regulations stopping more consolidation.
Government tyranny is the enabler for corporate tyranny under the current system, surely you know that. The government has real hard power through the use of force and any corporation has to abide by their rules.
If the government is abides by the will of the people, by extension the corporations will be accountable to the people. Corruption is anything that disrupts this connection.
Like why the fuck do you think that completely common sense ideas like single payer universal healthcare are not implemented in the US?
That's true part of the time, but libertarianism isn't the solution here.
Lobbying, certain regulations as you mentioned are all ways the corporations can leverage the government to enhance the problem.
However on their own, corporations can enact their own tyranny against the individual. The function of government is supposed to be to protect and represent it's constituents.
Imagine a world where corporations can poison you with a bad product, pollute your local river and there's no recourse. Or you have to have 8 different subscriptions for fucking roads.
Imagine, which happens already and would happen even more if we lightened these regulations, more anti competitive measures consolidating industries. No data protection or privacy laws, they can simply blacklist you and you're unemployable with an effective extrajudicial criminal record.
Corporations are just powerful entities that can impose on your life (typically not with guns and prisons, but actually they own those too sometimes...) just like the government, in a different manner. And we don't even have any choice in electing boardroom officials unless you're rich.
Libertarianism isn't the solution. Repealing Citizens United and clarifying a multinational corporation aren't people would be a real start. You need consumer protection, data privacy and environmental/product safety regulations to be free. We only need to look in the 19th and 20th century to see what can happen. Not saying we go full "socialist" or whatever, we need to balance economic freedom and innovation with individual protection against these uncaring profit driven entities. Most Western countries attempt this to an extent.
Libertarianism as it exists currently in the USA will never go for a single payer healthcare system. It’s ass backwards, and has become the closer Republicans put themselves in when they’re scared to admit they’re republican. Most American libertarians in 2024 are merely republicans who think weed should be legalized
I really wish Ron Paul had won. Libya would actually not be a slavery-practicing hellscape now and we'd be able to have semi-sane discourse about things. Not even because of him for the most part but because post-2012 everything went to shit in order to cope with Obama not doing any of the shit people elected him the first time and thus deflecting towards IdPol.
Libya would be a hell hole anyways. Regardless of if Ron Paul had won or not. Hell, if anything it would have gotten there faster because he’s a isolationist
The people of Libya were already in the early stages of a civil war against him before NATO and US involvement. Gadaffi was slaughtering people en masse who were against him with genuine war crime level shit. I'm sure it would have been fantastic for them continuing to gett massacred while Ron twiddled his thumbs in DC.
The man was also fundamentally a total narcissistic psychopath who kidnapped and raped hundreds of women and even reportedly some men. Forcing them into sexual slavery. He also tortured and killed people who stood up against his 'socialist' regime, be that the socialist and democratic voices or the Muslim extremist voices.
The people of Libya were right to be upset with him hoarding the vast amounts of wealth that he gets the credit for bringing to Libya, when basically the crux of what he did is come to power as the oil fields were finally finished being built by the previous regime and he 'nationalized' them - more accurately, he took personal control of the oil fields for himself to fund his lavish lifestyle of building himself golden plated palaces and getting plastic surgery every week.
Even if the civilians lives are more fucked up now from the ramifications of the civil war and collapse of the industry, they had idealistically hoped for a better tomorrow under an actually fair government that didn't commit violent suppression and have dictators for life propped up with a violent military force, which is a flawed system. Gadaffi could have died from old age or plastic surgery complications by now, who knows what other fucking unhinged psycho would have taken over after him.
The oil fields (which the previous regime had built) catapulted the nation from a resourceless economic deadzone to having functionally infinite money pouring out of the ground and he gets all the credit like he was some political mastermind. The Libyans could have been living in an unimaginable utopian society if he wasn't such a selfish insecure prick with delusions of grandeur.
Sure he gave the people a measly share of the oil wealth with some bog standard socialist policies, so generally the peasants thought life was good (better than under a theocratic monarchy) and that he was some benevolent kind hearted hero, but it was so ridiculously clear how much of that money was being embezzled by the melted face looking rapist.
Any retard can look half competent with infinite money to spend on their problems and his propaganda campaign was so good people are still putting him on a pedestal like he was anything more than an extremely lucky asshole in the right place at the right time.
If he had come within 100 million votes of the presidency they'd have blown his head off, likely on live TV to really drive the point home. There's too much at stake for the lunatics to just let some outsider come in and fuck it all up.
Unironically naming your department "doge" has got to be the most out-of-touch thing you can do. Like neftenya, that hasn't been a meme since, like 2020. Go name it something cooler, like a reference to TND or the Kali Yuga or something.
efficiency is actually one of the most lacking parts of most governments though, definitely including the US. and people dont even think about it, when it is actually should be one of the absolute highest priorities.
i dont really care that it has a stupid name, someone actually working towards it seems like a good idea.
If you think Elon is doing any of this for "efficiency" then you're too far gone. The only reason Elon wants to have any role in government is so he can pay less in taxes and take advantage of more poor people
Efficiency, like when Walmart has like two people working there. When the line for the register takes twenty minutes and the floors are sticky.
Efficiency, like how during covid everything was out of stock because it's inefficient to warehouse goods. Because it's most efficient for as soon as a product is made for it to be sold instantly.
I don't want my government to be efficient, I want it to be effective, I want it to be robust. I don't want our schools to be efficient. I want a high teacher to student ratio. I want our educators to be overqualified and overpaid. I want FEMA to be ready to handle multiple natural disasters at once. I want our infrastructure to be new, and if part of it goes down I want alternate backups already standing by. I want our immigration system to smoothly let in the people we need and aggressively keep out the criminals.
Government efficiency just means government for as cheap as possible, which is what we already have. Our government is designed to keep taxes as low as possible for billionaires, while spending trillions on stuff like the military to protect their investments overseas.
Government efficiency just means a government that will only benefit people like Elon, while continuing doing nothing for us. That's why we hate paying taxes, because unlike other countries we get nothing from it. All our government currently does is protect the interests of the rich.
Leave efficiency private industry, give me a robust government that actually benefits the working class instead of one that only serves the political donors class.
