We find being negative and depressing funny and endearing; and being positive and optimistic retarded and annoying. Other cultures are not like us.
We have a massive envy/crab in a bucket culture where everyone is negative and depressing in order to avoid being envied by others.

Eh… sorta. It’s more like a contempt for anyone who is seen to be ‘too big for their boots’ or just too proud basically. Too confident. Too happy.
In the U.K. you are expected to perform humility or you will be shunned or despised. We would expect a normal person to say ‘No my hometown is so terrible because XYZ’. Followed by ‘No my hometown is even worse. It is awful because we have even worse XYZ.’ Someone who pipes up with ‘Well my hometown is awesome!’ comes across as autistic and is a prime target for bullying - not performing humility.
It’s called tall poppy syndrome. It’s an issue in lots of cultures like U.K. and Japan.

British humor though is usually pretty peak. Witty and subtle. Which is astonishing given their Germanic roots and seeing how awful present day Germans are with humor.
