How do I get people to stop fucking tailgating?!

Every single time im on the road people follow me super close and I live in the country. 9/10 times there is nobody in front of me and they could just fucking go around me but they don't. I drive the speed limit, sometimes 2-3 over. I don't have my license yet, just my permit, so whenever I'm being tailgated I start panicking and thinking oh my god I'm gonna get rear ended and then I'm gonna get run off the road, there's nothing but trees around, I'm gonna hit a tree and murder my mom because she's in the car with me. I'm just petrified that a deer is gonna run out in front of me (deer are extremely common in my area) and I'll get rear ended by these big ass pickup trucks and everyone will die and it'll be all my fault
dsmjrv@reddit
2-3 over the speed limit is extremely slow… 15mph over is pretty average
It’s your fault, yes you’re the problem, go faster.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I'm sorry 15 over is average???? I live in the country where most of the roads are surrounded by field and forest, and I'm supposed to go 70? What do you do if a deer, or someone's dog, or whatever runs out of the bushes? I'm already barely able to react fast enough to avoid animals at 55
dsmjrv@reddit
You’re supposed to pull over then, let the guy pass.. don’t be a dick just because you’re scared
tweisse75@reddit
Just keep driving the way you. Make sure you do not speed up in passing zones.
Is it the same person every day? If so alter your schedule and leave five minutes earlier or later.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
No, different people. But always assholes in lifted up trucks because that's just how country people are.
Dusted_Dreams@reddit
That's just how people in stupid emotional support trucks are.
ant2ne@reddit
"emotional support truck" has entered my vocabulary.
Chaotic-Bubble@reddit
My kid said a truck was "in uppercase" once and it became my favorite way to refer to lifted vehicles.
ant2ne@reddit
that is a good one, too
EthansWay007@reddit
“Look at my giant truck y’all, it absolutely correlates to ti my giant self esteem. Nope, no self esteem issues here.. cause look at my giant truck!” 😂
LostAd3362@reddit
Hell yea! Thanks for the new term!
Zenobee1@reddit
Now switch trucks with rams.
mrkstr@reddit
Sometimes posted speed limits are way below what's safe for conditions. Maybe try 5 over. Either that or pull over and let them get past you. It's not rational, but the people tailgating you will get more and more reckless. Safest course is to let them go as fast as they want. Help them pass. Even if you have to slow down in passing zones.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
what is a situation where going the posted speed limit isn't safe for the conditions?
ImDestructible@reddit
Driving on a highway where the speed limit is 55mph, but the flow of traffic is 70mph. It would not be safe to go 55mph.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
Why wouldn't it?
Many states regulate trucks to 55mph, even where cars have higher posted limits. It's a driver's responsibility to be aware of potential hazards of vehicles travelling at lower speed.
ImDestructible@reddit
Not sure where you live, but going the posted speed limit in central Florida when there isn't bumper to bumper traffic would be extremely dangerous.
If semis are passing you, you are a danger to yourself and the others around you.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
Where did anyone suggest semis were passing them?
65mph max interstate, 55 state roads, for both cars and commercial vehicles.
ImDestructible@reddit
No one mentioned it. I was replying to a comment that asked when it would be unsafe to go the posted limit. So I was giving an example.
If it is not bumper to bumper, the traffic on our interstates does not do the speed limit, semis included. So yes, going 55mph when the flow is 70mph is unsafe.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
If others want to go 70 in a 55, go for it. I'm comfortable going 5 over, but I'm not getting a ticket just because other drivers are impatient.
WantedBeen@reddit
It's get a ticket or get squished!
ImDestructible@reddit
That's fine, please stay in the far right lane if you ever visit Florida. I'm not saying what you should or shouldn't do. Only provided an example to the person who asked.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
I stay in the far right lane unless overtaking in any state.
I police my speed, not everyone else's.
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
The speed limit has nothing to do with the flow of traffic. If the speed limit is 60mph, traffic is flowing at 70mph, and you are going 55mph, you are a risk to all of those around you.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
If the speed limit is 60, I'm going 60-65 and my insurance requires a black box that records my speed. Pass me.
I'm only a risk because everyone else feels the speed limit is too low.
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
If EVERYONE except you is doing something, you are the problem, not everyone else.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
If everyone is comfortable driving off a cliff, should I have to?
I'll do me.
Any_Tea_7845@reddit
if you drive, you should already know that most adults are not capable of safely driving a vehicle. assuming members of the public have any sense of responsibility will literally get you killed.
TurboNeon185@reddit
Also, OP saying 9/10 times there's no one in front of them suggests that everyone else is traveling at a higher speed.
OP is correct that the people behind them could just pass. But I'm just pointing out more evidence that they are driving slower than the normal flow of traffic.
mrkstr@reddit
Almost all posted speed limits. Especially when it's dry and clear out.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
I don't get it, going the speed limit isn't safe?
ICuNak3D@reddit
Neither, is not going the speed limit. That's exactly why I keep saying this! if you are not comfortable driving or a new driver... That's exactly why you drive in the right lanes. The left are used for ppl who do drive a bit faster.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
i never said anything about left lanes
Focustazn@reddit
I think they're trying to say that the speed limit is slower than it NEEDS to be. As in, a 35MPH speed limit on a straight, wide, empty road that could be driven at 65 with zero safety concerns.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
but how isn't that a safety concern? a deer could pop out or a cop could be waiting or something. I guess I just don't understand the need to speed greatly over the limit, the limit is there for a reason?
Focustazn@reddit
As far as I understand it, the speed limit argument is split into four camps:
People who want the speed limit low enough that a head-on crash at the speed limit is nearly never fatal. This is the risk averse approach, which lowers fatality rates (but curiously, not accident rates), at the cost of significantly more road rage events, as well as smog problems from traffic congestion.
People who want the speed limit to be roughly at the average traffic flow, or the natural speed that most people are safe driving on that road if there was no posted limit. This is the organic approach, using traffic studies to determine the average speeds and letting the speed limit be controlled by that for the most part, unless the road engineers say otherwise.
People who want no speed limits, and extreme competence being the required standard to obtain a driver's license at all (aka, German roadways). This is the balls-to-the-wall approach, and quite unpopular except in car enthusiast communities.
People who want low speed limits because of environmental reasons; more acceleration and higher cruising speed = more gas/emissions. These are also the people who are actively trying to cancel cars as a hobby/passion. This is the California approach, which... I leave opinions up to you all.
----
Generally, speed limits are determined by a mixture of these approaches (except 3).
Engineers design the road to be safe at a certain speed (usually much higher than the posted limit ends up being). Then, politics takes hold.
The state, county, city governments conduct traffic surveys, then set the limit based on which roads belong to their jurisdictions.
Soccer Moms USA attempts to make a universal 25MPH speed limit on all roads except for parking lots, in which you have to get out of your car and PUSH it yourself. They get laughed out the room most of the time, but occasionally get a speed limit lowered after a drunk driver launches a kindergartener to space.
SEMA and all the car enthusiasts try to lobby for 80MPH highway limits and 50MPH surface street limits except for places with low visibility or draw distance. They get laughed out the room every single time, and CARB swoops in with more laws to kneecap car enthusiasts further.
The enviro-nuts come along, and Newsom personally gives each attendee a handjob with extra Vaseline. Bans engines in California "cuz I said so" and nobody can do anything about it.
----
The end result is.... the speed limit has been 65MPH for as long as cars have been able to reach 65mph, and no amount of safety technologies in cars or improved roads seems like it will ever change it. Some think the limit is fine as is. Others want it to be 80MPH. California wants everyone to ride bicycles 50 miles to work.
----
TL;DR: Their argument isn't so much that speed isn't a safety concern; it's that speed limits are set by politics, not safety.
Therefore, driving 5-10MPH over the speed limit, or straight up raising the speed limit 5-10MPH, is perfectly safe.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
As far as the 4 arguments, I think those are all kinda stupid and I just think the speeds limits are perfectly fine how it is. Driving 5-10 over the limit is also fine but I believe there's no need to raise the limits. What is the need to drive 20+ over the limit?? But I also barely understand what you are trying to say or how the hell it's possible that it's "not safe" to drive the speed limit in whatever conditions. I just don't think the speed limits are "slower than it needs to be"
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
Here is a (hypothetical) case where it is unsafe to drive the speed limit.
Let’s say you are traveling on a highway - it’s a gorgeous day outside, so traffic is flowing at 70mph. However, the speed limit on this road is 55mph - as a result, if you “just drove the speed limit”, you would be going 15mph slower than all the cars around you, creating a dangerous situation.
TwinkleDinkle3@reddit
no it's not, just because everyone is speeding doesn't make it okay. there's 2 lanes for a reason, i'll go the limit and let them get pulled over if they wish
mnemonicmonkey@reddit
Also note: #2 has been studied to be the safest.
547217@reddit
Faster than a lower speed is always a safety concern, doesn't matter what you're driving on because if you're going faster you increase the danger regardless. How's that wide empty road going to do any good if the deer jumps in front of you because that's going to hurt a lot more at 65 mph
mrkstr@reddit
The going the speed limit is safe. But on a lot of roads, the speed limit could be higher and still be very safe.
Naikrobak@reddit
He means it the other way around, almost all roads have speed limits that are quite a bit slower than needed to remain safe, meaning there is a lot of room to raise speed limits.
Sure-Ground-883@reddit
My FIL is an officer. The speed limit ISSSS the limit. Five over is technically illegal. But everyone does it so you get away with it. But in a lot places you will get pulled for things like that. There’s no need to go over and be on peoples ass. Normalize common decency and leaving SPACE
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
Yeah, but not everyone needs to drive like Kevin Harvick.
BurnedLaser@reddit
Rain, snow, ice, etc.
ICuNak3D@reddit
Pull to the right lane. That's typically used for slower drivers, new drivers and riders. It's meant that way so the cars on the left can continue with the flow of traffic and it's much safer
espeero@reddit
When it encourages jerks to tailgate?
sn0rkl3@reddit
No no no no no no .... If they're going to pull over every time someone wants to pass you in the country you're not going to get where you need to go. Also that can be dangerous if you're panicked.
After you're licensed, it may be better to go with the flow of traffic but until then don't get in the habit of speeding and sabotage your driver test.
Randomized9442@reddit
Speed limits are NOT set for what is appropriate for vehicle safety, they are set to what is appropriate for ALL safety (ideally, obviously they are set by fallible human beings). This includes the safety of the people living and/or working in the area and even wildlife safety. Things outside of cars have their right to exist.
mrkstr@reddit
Yup. And even considering all that, they are still often set too low. That's why 5 to 10 over is the standard.
Randomized9442@reddit
Nah, that's just arrogance on the part of the drivers. "It's the legal limit, but I am better than other people and my car is magical not physical and is better at stopping than actual tests indicate. They should applaud me for doing this, not ticket me!" Been driving & training drivers for enough decades to understand how drivers think.
mrkstr@reddit
And yet traffic flows continue day after day at 5 to 10 over with very few incidents.
Randomized9442@reddit
Passenger vehicles are the most dangerous form of transportation, so I dunno why you try to make that claim.
mrkstr@reddit
Anecdotal evidence. No one thinks about risking their lives to commute to work. I don't hear news reports of thousands of deaths daily in my area from cars going 5 to 10 mph over.
There is this push in our society to worship safety over everything else. Our lives are pretty safe the way we are living them now. If fact, I think we can roll it back a bit for the sake of fun or convenience. The people who treat speed limits like they are the word of God are the same people that would outlaw trampolines, back yard pools and playground merry-go-rounds.
Relax a little. Live your life. When you're number's up, it's probably not going to be because you were going 36 in a 35.
Randomized9442@reddit
No, it is not anecdotal, we spend a lot of money to track this.
mrkstr@reddit
I never said there aren't stats on accidents. I said our lives are pretty safe and to relax a little.
Randomized9442@reddit
You can't even comprehend my level of chill right now
RecommendationUsed31@reddit
I won't matter how fast they go. They could be going 100 and would still get tailgated
murphsmodels@reddit
It's not just country people. I live in a major city, and it's always the asshole in lifted trucks tailgating. Wait until nighttime when you get the joy of their ultra bright LED headlights drilling into your brain from behind
cugrad16@reddit
Not even just them. Try about everyone in the newer vehicles... on your azz instead of going around. And then DON'T leave enough headroom, barely scraping your fender as they pass around you.... mfs.
LostAd3362@reddit
If your lights need to be that bright at night...you shouldn't be driving with your blind ass lol
wizardofahhhs77@reddit
There are a lot of lifted trucks where I live, too (WV). I try to stay out of their way, but that's difficult because there are mostly 2-lane highways here. I usually drive 3+ over the speed limit, but they will go around me and blow past; I just let their asses go.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I want people to just go around me
Cool_Owl7159@reddit
I'll just slow down as much as I need to before they finally pass
wizardofahhhs77@reddit
So do I, but for various reasons, they don't. What I do is, as long as it's safe to do so, I pull over and let them pass me.
PhdPhysics1@reddit
I got my kids a "Student Driver" magnet.
ant2ne@reddit
they can see over you. They can see farther. So they think they can drive faster.
AdComplex2170@reddit
I moved to a small town two years ago. Angry little men in lifted pickup trucks are the worst. Lots of one lane roads around here, too.
RPK79@reddit
Yeah, the lifted trucks really like to tailgate because they can see right over you and think that they can ride your ass because they can react to things at the same time as you.
You have to feel bad for them because their penises are so small.
If it bothers you and you don't have a second lane you can move over to keep slowing down incrementally until they get sick of it and pass.
pete_68@reddit
You might get a sticker to put on the back of your car saying "New Driver" or something. That might get them to back off a bit. I notice quite a few of those in our area.
MichiganGeezer@reddit
I hope they get interpreted as "incompetent driver" stickers.
There aren't THAT many new drivers out there.
PaintingRegular6525@reddit
My in-laws live in a very rural area. I’ve found it easier to just straddle the shoulder so they can see around me and pass. Never been an issue.
Deaftrav@reddit
Ah lifted trucks. There you go.
We all have that experience. Regardless of if we've been driving a few weeks or a few decades.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
(In fact, my mom and I have made it a game to spot the most ridiculous truck we can. So far, it's a guy driving a dually with towing mirrors even though he's never hauling anything and has a trump flag on his truck. At least whenever we see him he has the decency to pass.)

Get a used lifted-up truck when you can afford one. I've driven about 800,000 miles during my life, and I can confirm (kinda joking) that traffic laws do not apply to lifted-up trucks.
Happy_P3nguin@reddit
Swerve a bit, pretend you're drunk
ICuNak3D@reddit
That's a typical Lo IQ city rat response.
Quit acting like a tard. If u can't take the heat , take the bus, keep it moving , "OR PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE" . That's what ppl should be doing... That's the norm. Ppl use that system for, getting to the exit. emergencies, new drivers... and u don't know much about driving etiquette . Didja not learn this ? RU a new driver? Bc u seem like it.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
City rat??? Dude I'm from a town of 1000 people in the Midwest. There is no bus to take. Most of the roads are 2 lane. There is no right to pull over to.
Also you calling me low IQ meanwhile you have the spelling of a toddler is laughable.
No-Plenty1982@reddit
if youre in a town of 1000 good chance you know them no?
Anyways the actual defense drivings courses tell you to just slow down, not brake but just lift off your accelerator until they go around, if youre actually that scared just turn into a parking lot or street and turn around so they do pass you. It may be a stupid thing where people forget they need following distance and were never corrected, ive talked to some people about it in parking lots when I was driving in the evening and their headlights were so close I didnt even know they were there till i sped up and saw them.
ItchySackError404@reddit
Sometimes people just drive really fast and just let themselves creep up to the person ahead and then let off the gas. They're not aware that they're following so close, just kind of following the herd.
mwf67@reddit
Slowing down in passing zone so maybe it encourages them to go around
bprice68@reddit
Yeah, people are assholes and you just can’t fix them.. Get a hands free phone set up and call 911 when it happens. People pulled the same shit with my daughter when she was learning. My ex was a dispatcher so she called it in one time, found out who was patrolling close by, and got them to come and pull them over. Was one of the coolest things ever.
I’ll ride your ass on a multi lane road if you’re camping in the left lane and just won’t get over, but that’s the only time.
GoochMasterFlash@reddit
The best thing you can do if you really want someone to get off your ass when they can easily go around you is to just take your foot off the gas. Even put on your emergency lights if you want to make a show of it. 100% of the time they will immediately go around you
Dont spray them with fluid or brake check them or try to wave them off. 50% of the time that will make some asshole roadrage at you and that shit is never worth it.
Just slow down. Theyll go around you Dont spray
Ok-Understanding9244@reddit
Put your hazard 4-way flashers on, slow down and find a safe place to pull over a lil bit briefly and wave them by. I personally appreciate it when slower drivers do this. Thanks in advance.
HugeLocation9383@reddit
This is wrong. It just rewards the tailgater for their shitty behavior and reinforces it.
Ok-Understanding9244@reddit
Your solution is to what, brake check and cause an accident?
Imaginary-Round2422@reddit
It’s not wrong, it’s literally what the police will tell you to do.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I mean I can try, a lot of the roads have little to no shoulder
Imaginary-Round2422@reddit
If it’s a straight stretch where you can see there’s no oncoming traffic, you don’t need much shoulder. They can cross the double line to pass a stationary vehicle. Just be sure to put your hazards on when you do it.
animatedw00d@reddit
Just lightly press your brake. Do this and it will make them think you are break checking them. I do it all the time.
Soup0rMan@reddit
You are break checking them. That's exactly what it is. The degree to which you break is irrelevant. Stop being a hazard to other drivers. Just ease off the gas and put your blinkers on.
animatedw00d@reddit
No. Break checking them is actually putting on break with enough pressure to reduce speed. Lightly pressing on your break enough to turn on the break lights is not causing a Hazzard. It is a warning
Ok-Understanding9244@reddit
You don't have to really pull over if you don't want, just slowing down and flashers and a wave is all it takes for me. Thanks
surrealpolitik@reddit
If someone does that then they have to get up to speed from a dead stop, which depending on the road can be dangerous.
If I’m going the speed limit - or 5-10 miles over - why should I risk my safety just because you don’t know how to budget your time?
Ok-Understanding9244@reddit
Don't need to stop, pull over a lil bit to indicate you are yielding, or just slow down a bit and put flashers on and wave, it's merely a suggestion if road is conducive to it..
surrealpolitik@reddit
Or you can just not tailgate. There's never an excuse for tailgating, you're putting people in danger when you do that and it's for no good reason.
Just drive like a fucking adult and try to remember that the world doesn't revolve around you.
I know this is controversial in 2024.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G68bHA-AR-4
Ok-Understanding9244@reddit
Or you could just slow down a little and let me pass safely..
Mumei451@reddit
Just feather the gas until you're going 5 under, this causes almost everyone to go around pretty quickly.
bart_y@reddit
I wish it were that simple. I have been on 4 lane roads and slowed to 10-15 under and some people still will not go around you.
I move to the other lane and they just pace you.
It is some of the most bizarre behavior I've ever seen.
Fun-Average-2418@reddit
Are you camping the left lane when people aren’t going around you? The pacing nonsense i’ve never understood.
bart_y@reddit
I've only moved to the left in the hope that since there's nobody in front of them, they will finally move past me. When that doesn't work, that's usually when I suddenly and rapidly reduce my speed so that they can't match it anymore. Then I get behind them in the right lane.
This always seems to happen when there's next to zero traffic on the road too. Which makes it even more puzzling.
Mumei451@reddit
Those types of drivers are just totally oblivious.
They'll pack up with anyone on the road and just repeatedly get too close, pass you and then immediately decelerate, make lane changes for no reason. At least they aren't aggressive, just stupid.
Pushfastr@reddit
I found what works is gently slowing down 5-10 kmh and then quickly going back up 5-10 over. Repeat like two or three times.
Ten out of ten people either leave a gap or go around. Ain't nobody ever keep following close after I accelerate back up to 5-10 over, even if I chill at the speed limit afterwards.
bart_y@reddit
I had another one do it to me on the way in to work last night...maybe an hour after I posted that!
I'm going down a hill, cruise set to 58. Guy comes FLYING up in the left lane, then just parks himself right in my damn blind spot. Bump off the cruise a couple of MPH. He just matches it. Do it again. Same result.
Finally just disengage the cruise entirely (I drive an EV, so the regen braking results in my speed trailing off rather rapidly) and for a brief moment the idiot still tries to slow, but I guess when it became obvious that I wasn't going to stop slowing they FINALLY pulled ahead.

I was driving with my roommate and she had to use her spare tire, so naturally she was going like 20 under on the highway in the right lane with hazards on.
Still caught plenty of tailgaters, but at that point if you can't see what's going on or even just pass and not care what's going on you deserve to be late to wherever you're going
Mumei451@reddit

Yeah, 99% of the roads I drive are 2 lane and a good amount don't have shoulders
SolidDoctor@reddit
Then pick a driveway.
If no driveway, then just wait until you have a broken yellow line in the road, put your turn signal on and pull over as far as you can and let them pass you.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
Sure, hard brake to make the driveway entrance. That'll do it.

I do exactly that and I live out in the sticks as well, lots of winding two lane mountain roads out here. Loads of fun to drive and absolutely drop dead scenery but not a lot of room for people to get their F350's by my 30 year old Explorer chugging its way up the hill. Just pull over as far as you can onto the shoulder and throw your blinkers or hazards on. People typically get the idea pretty quick.
Cute_Ad_3049@reddit
Omg I can relate so much. It’s truly become an epidemic.
MehX73@reddit
You can also show down and then wave your arm out the window for them to pass you. My son just got his license and this has been a problem for him too.
112358132134fitty5@reddit
Ignore them, i mean the other redditors. do not pull over, it is not safe.
JohnnyD423@reddit
Letting people pass is perfectly safe. What's wrong with you?
112358132134fitty5@reddit
Pulling over is not, think it through.
JohnnyD423@reddit
Done. It's fine. What exactly do you think is unsafe?
112358132134fitty5@reddit
Op is going the speed limit and being tailgated. What part of putting his wheels off the pavement is safe in that scenario?
JohnnyD423@reddit
Signal, let off the gas, brake. Not hard, not dangerous. It should be a more common courtesy than it is.
112358132134fitty5@reddit
And pull off the eoad onto gravel? Grass? A ditch?.
I do agree if op was driving 20 under tge speed limit they might want to think about pulling over, but op should not endanger themselves in the least to let someone speed past. Its like swer ing to avoid a deer. It might save you a collision, but if it causes any damage you are 100% at fault. Stay in your lane and drive safe
But the signal is a good idea, that might just back them off.
JohnnyD423@reddit
Do you honestly think that I'm suggesting pulling over into a ditch as opposed to something more reasonable than the shoulder or pullout if available? I'll try to be more clear next time.
Regarding deer? I'm not going to risk my life and vehicle because someone else is following too closely. Obviously if I have to swerve, I was going too fast and would be at fault. But hitting the brakes to avoid hitting an obstacle on the road? There's nothing wrong with that.
capt7430@reddit
I'll take my foot off the gas and slow up just a bit while moving over to the right side of the lane. I don't ever go off the road, but just that little slide over gives most people the hint to go around.
Don't engage with those idiots, though. It's not at all worth it.
Shatophiliac@reddit
I never pull over. I basically just pretend they aren’t there. They either eventually calm down and back off, or they pass when it’s safe. .01% will try to start shit and only then will I take evasive action, but otherwise I’m just continuing to drive like they don’t exist.
And never speed up, I had a guy tailgating me at night once so I kept speeding up, until he pulled me over for speeding. It was some asshole cop. Even if it wasn’t a cop though it just incentivizes them to tailgate more since it ends up working.

First and ONLY time I was pulled over and (almosti) issued a ticket.
Pulled out from an abandoned gas station, got right on my ass with his brights on and then I couldn't even see his headlights anymore.
I noped the fuck out of there.
Found out who it was when I pulled into my driveway about to go grab a shotgun for self defense.
golfguy1985@reddit
I’ll still go at or around the speed limit on a two lane road
Mumei451@reddit
Probably the smart play, especially if the deer are out.
Sucks to have someone tailgate but actually driving faster is just going to have them on your tail at 55 instead of 45.
golfguy1985@reddit
If I have to brake quickly out of no where, it won’t be my problem and they’ll be at fault
Alexjp127@reddit
Yeah it'll be there fault and you might be dead
Mumei451@reddit
Or just have a permanent back or neck injury.
Definitely not a no consequences scenario.
golfguy1985@reddit
Just a way to get more money out of them and possibly prison time if I’m lucky. If they are stupid and ruin my life, I’ll do anything in my power to destroy theirs.
golfguy1985@reddit
And hopefully they’ll go to prison for a long time. I’m alive, they won’t like how things will be when I go after them hard with my lawyer.
yogacat1979@reddit
That's a terrible suggestion. Do not pull over for that.
Mumei451@reddit
Keep getting tailgated and complaining, then 🤷
mrkstr@reddit
This is the best advice.
Alot2unpack@reddit
Be careful about pulling over on back country roads though. There are usually hidden dangers in higher grass etc. Things that will mess up your car. It’s deer season lots of places. You don’t need that. Also things that fall from vehicles often end up on the shoulders and in tall grass. People telling you to just pull over may not be familiar with back country roads. These roads only get mowed a couple times a year. OP should use caution. No telling what is in the grass, and it’s likely there is a drainage ditch next to that shoulder.
OP. I also live off these roads. I’m also NEVER in a hurry. They will eventually pass you. Some will wait for a broken line, some will not. The lifted trucks usually don’t have the power to get around lol. Do not go faster than you’re comfortable going. Keep in mind that there are houses with families and pets that you are passing. Continue to plan your escape and exit should you need to brake and avoid. Watch for school buses and mail carriers and fuck that guy behind you that doesn’t care about others.
halfbakedcaterpillar@reddit
Relax. Seriously dude, take a breath. You're getting way too worked up about this
Use your windshield fluid and clean your windows. It always splatters the car driving too close behind you and it sometimes makes people get the picture.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
How am I getting way too worked up about 2 ton death machines in which one mistake can kill someone? I only drive because there's absolutely 0 public transport in my area and I both can't afford to uproot my life and move to the city and I don't want to abandon my family to do so
zepplin2225@reddit
Drive.
Faster.
Or move over and take the back of the line. One car tailgating, they're the asshole. A line of cars tailgating? You're the asshole.
LooseMoose8@reddit
I see you tailgate
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
I see you’re the selfish dude who has long lines of cars following him because he doesn’t let them pass.
LooseMoose8@reddit
You should try out for the upcoming Olympics, the jump to that conclusion was huge
zepplin2225@reddit
Some clown doing 40 in a 45? Yeah, I'm doing what I can to pass the timid driver. Drivers who are scared of the vehicle they are operating have no place on the road.
Sure-Ground-883@reddit
Bruh you think a new driver is going to immediately be comfortable and do perfect like an experienced one is? Crazy
Rexxmen12@reddit
Cool. Were not talking about someone going under the limit. OP said they drive at to 3 above the limit
LameBMX@reddit
the dumbest thing you can do is tailgate them.
you hang back with enough room to accelerate to a decent passing speed while staying in your lane. this will also give you a metric shit ton better visibility of the oncoming traffic. then you have very little time in oncoming traffic because you already have the speed to pass before leaving your lane.
ibringthehotpockets@reddit
I don’t think they said they tailgate unless I missed a comment
LameBMX@reddit
read it in context with the comment they are replying to.
k1k11983@reddit
You’re constantly in a panic, thinking about the worst case scenario when someone tailgates you. You do need to find a way to address that anxiety because anxiety is very dangerous on the road. Just pull over and then get in behind them. Problem solved
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I mean I constantly hear about people getting mangled horribly in crashes and I'm supposed to not be cautious?
Krimsonkreationz@reddit
Cautious is what you want to be. Panicked is what you don’t want to be.
k1k11983@reddit
Cautious is fine, panic attacks over an easily solvable problem is not. Those horrific crashes are very rarely nose to tail collisions. Even when they are, they’re high impact(front vehicle at a dead stop, rear vehicle at extremely high speeds). Even if you had to stop to avoid a deer or other obstruction, they’d only be a couple seconds behind your reaction so the impact wouldn’t be catastrophic.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I'm not having panic attacks, it's more just white knuckling thr wheel and racing thoughts of everything that could go wrong
Krimsonkreationz@reddit
No point in being too fearful on the road, that’s opening the door for mistakes to be made from being nervous and anxious. Just respect the road and vehicles on it. You can’t control if someone is tailgating. My advice would be to ignore the drivers behind you. Don’t look at them in the rear view mirror if you’re going to be super worried by doing so. Just focus on driving the way you’re going, up until you need to make a lane change or another move that would require you to look behind and around you.
volengr@reddit
Respect driving, don't fear it. Fear causes bad decisions.
Chastidy@reddit
Totally disagree. Fear of dying while driving makes for many cautious and safe decisions
Ok-Satisfaction3085@reddit
It also makes for panicked drivers. I had a bf one time who almost killed us on the freeway because somebody used their horn around him and it scared the shit out of him because he thinks if someone’s using the horn it means there’s a horrible firey accident. Some people are wayyyy to skittish to drive safely. So it’s better to respect the danger rather than fear it.
Chastidy@reddit
Yeah there’s a difference between fear and panic. A healthy dose of fear is essential when driving. I’m sure the big truck behind OP isn’t scared at all and is more likely an unsafe driver than OP
FupaDeChao@reddit
No u are getting too worked up. I can tell ur stress and anxiety from just this post. And drivers that freak the fuck out about everything can be the most dangerous on the road. U really do need to relax. Yes u can kill someone. But if u do what ur supposed to do ull be jus fine

2 ton death machine...
this is part of your problem. It's a car; a motor vehicle. It's not a death machine. These cars aren't like Transformers. They aren't programmed to destroy mankind. You however, the person behind the wheel are in control of a piece of heavy equipment that requires skill, nerve, and intelligence to drive. You're going to have to learn 2 sets of rules; the written ones you test on when at the DMV getting your license, and the unwritten rules for driving etiquette. "Don't make it a point to get in others way" is a good one. Driving at the speed limit in otherwise good conditions is simply too slow; especially since someone else is now behind you. If you feel uncomfortable at that speed, I would suggest more driving in those conditions gradually increasing your speed until your comfort level increases.
LewdProphet@reddit
Don't listen to anyone that tells you driving the speed limit is too slow. They aren't going to pay your tickets or your car insurance.
Minimum-Register-644@reddit
Absolute lunacy to tell someone that they should break the law and endanger everyone on the road as a way to be a good driver. Absurd.
Due-Storage-9039@reddit
Driving the speed of traffic instead of the speed limit (when traffic is going above the speed limit) is proven much much much safer than going slower than traffic.
aee78@reddit
It's a two lane back road, they're not endangering anyone by going the speed limit. The person behind them can pass when there's white dotted lines.
69brain69@reddit
And in some states points are double for new drivers
Florida_Man666@reddit
Or your medical bills if driving too fast causes you to be in a wreck.
sharmander15@reddit
couldn't agree more
Chastidy@reddit
I can’t believe you’re being downvoted here. If you have to stop quickly while being tailgated the truck behind you has a very good chance of smashing into you and doing serious damage.
knatehaul@reddit
I say this same "death machine" thing when folks decide to hover directly beside you going 70+ on a highway instead of passing. All it takes is a big sneeze or an aneurysm for either person to swerve and cause a major accident. The main game of driving needs to be "Stay away from other cars when possible."
AdamZapple1@reddit
no idea how. just ignore them or go faster or get out of the way. nothing else you can do.
Plane_Technology4932@reddit
More like 4- 5 ton machines, and many of us who drive them can drive, ie I work in the woods and when the trail is bad it’s 4 wheel drive and everything the truck has to make it to work. And when the weather is really bad and they say don’t drive it’s the guys with the big trucks who go play, get the lil cars outta the ditches, and blast through the banks making it easier on the plows,
Due-Storage-9039@reddit
Because other people do it every day and don’t have rage fits, and they also drive faster than you
ResponsibleBison4839@reddit
You barely have your your license, which means you haven’t been driving that long. You sound like an 80 year bitchin n moaning.
Next_Instruction_528@reddit
Just pull over on the shoulder and let them pass
bringbackuptowndiner@reddit
Dude I'm on your side in this, it's unfair to be tailgated and shitty to be told to "take a breath and relax" about it.
CheeryBottom@reddit
Get a rear dashcam and buy some stickers from Amazon for the back of your car that warn tailgaters you have a rear dashcam recording.
In all honesty, getting worked up about bad drivers being bad drivers is just wasting your energy. You can’t control how others drive. Don’t let tailgaters occupy so much of your time and energy.
Naikrobak@reddit
Your attitude towards vehicles is pure fear instead of logical. Thats way too worked up, because you aren’t looking at how safe car travel actually is. The main reason is simple statistics. Wrecks are really insignificant, like 1 in 366 chance. Getting injured in a wreck is far less. And dying in a car wreck is far far less. 0.002% to be exact.
seymores_sunshine@reddit
You clearly need to see a professional if you're this anxious about driving. Good grief.
Soup0rMan@reddit
They're a learner, give em some slack, good grief.
seymores_sunshine@reddit
A panic attack at the wheel is a very serious risk. It should not be taken lightly.
mexicn_duimachine@reddit
Also fyi, I and others make mistakes while driving every single day, hell every single drive. A mistake will not cost you your life in a vehicle and don’t think of it like that. If you believe that you and others need to drive perfectly just to survive, you’ll put an insane amount of stress on yourself. Mistakes happen man trust. When you see an ambulatory adult walking just know that’s somebody who has driven, made a mistake, and didn’t die. That’s a lot of people isn’t it?
mexicn_duimachine@reddit
Imagine not walking because it’s scary and people can kill you at any random time if they decide to do so. That’s you. Life includes driving man that’s part of until we figure out teleportation. Sometimes life includes risky shit but we keep on going. I mean you walk around cars all day and don’t mind? Are you gonna stay indoors because cars prowl the streets and they might hit you? idk what it is with the newer gen wanting pity parties when it comes to driving. It’s scary but get over it ffs
ryanoc3rus@reddit
One option is put right hand turn signal on and slow down. If you have a paved shoulder then slightly pull over. If it's not paved just hug the right side of the lane. The dumbass behind you should be happy to go around you. Then you can resume driving normally.
HfUfH@reddit
Everything you said is correct. But that dosent mean you should be angry about it.
Anger makes us reckless, agressive, and better at identifying the ways we are being treated. These aspects dont help if your goal is to be safe on the road.
libra-love-@reddit
Just pull off to the side and let them pass if it’s THIS anxiety inducing. Most people in my area do 10-20 above speed limit. I live in a rural area and on the empty backroads no one does 35. It’s just how it is here.
saltymane@reddit
If it make you that anxious, pull off enough to let them pass then pull back on. I do this for the same reason.
NotHumanButIPlayOne@reddit
Because you are. Just ignore them.
EightOhms@reddit
Sounds like your issue is just general driving anxiety and not tailgaters.
The real answer is just slow down a little bit. That way should you have to stop suddenly the impact from the car behind you won't be as bad.
Also keep in mind that being rear-ended is the safest possible collision you can have. Both cars are going the same direction and so only the relative difference in speed contributes to the impact force. You both have a bunch of car and engine in between and literal crumple zones designed to absorb and dissipate energy in a collision.
Also millions of people drove every day and don't get into a collision. Give it a year or two and you won't think twice about driving. I get that for you this is a huge deal right now but it really doesn't need to be.
EthansWay007@reddit
Too worked up? Let me know your driving route so I can get 1 foot of space behind you at 80mph all the way to your destination. Oh and you have no idea of my reaction time.. I’m actually quite stupid and very slow reaction time, I’m sure you’ll feel quite safe with me there though
kane_eightee@reddit
Bonus: if your vehicle has a rear window wiper, rig the sprayer to spray directly away from your vehicle. Such as can be seen in this video.
AdamZapple1@reddit
why would you want to reward tailgating with free washer fluid?
the_ruckus@reddit
Just give them enough to smudge it up, but not a full cleaning.
AdamZapple1@reddit
a dab'll do ya
mcpatsky@reddit
I’ve definitely done this
SprintRacer@reddit
This is the way. It works or at least it did with my previous car. My current car the sprayer is mounted under the hood and the nozzle's not adjustable so I might have to get creative. Otherwise it DOES WORK.
Silent_Pay_9239@reddit
I like putting my hazards on for a few blinks, which helps wake those people up who don't realize they're tailgating; I really need to start using the windshield fluid though, maybe blinking + fluid if they don't back off after the blink would help them get the idea
UpperAcanthaceae1972@reddit
Start swerving it usually backs people off or gets them to pass
Akraiders907@reddit
The Dutchman comment was spot on
You can't worry about asshole drivers your going to deal with then regardless. I drive a bit faster then others and I even find myself tailgated at times. It's rude and dangerous but you just have to do your best to ignore them. Drive safe and obey the laws. If someone is getting to the point of making you uncomfortable simply pull over in a safe spot and let them pass. Never speed up or slow down. If you speed up they will keep pushing you and if you slow down it will piss them off and cause a road rage issue. Just remember every driver out there deals with the same thing, or is that asshole. Your not alone, you could also consider getting a studing driver sticker, or an it's an old car I'm going as fast as I can. Or even if your going to ride my ass atleast pull my hair sticker... lol
MoonWillow91@reddit
I like the advice except the never slow down part. I’m slowing down to minimize the potential damage in the event I have to brake suddenly. Yes it might piss ppl off and raise risk of them trying to hurt you. However they’re usually highly unlikely to actually risk putting themselves at liability for a multitude of possible charges that “they were going too slow” wouldn’t get them out of. The closer they get to my bumper the more I slow down. If it’s a road I can get over, i do when it’s safe to do so. And don’t let our vehicles go the same pace if they’re passing me after or while being aggressive, like if they seem to be keeping pace with me I slow down again. Still avoiding conflict, lowering risk major damage. And probably more advantages.
Akraiders907@reddit
I can understand why you would want to slow down. And like I said never do anything that makes you uncomfortable even if it's advice trying to help you. Everyone drives differently and that's cool. I'm 35 and a mechanic so driving and cars are kinda my thing, that doesn't mean I'm always right or my advice is any better then others but I have driven a lot and my experience is if you slow down it will put the tailgater closer. Making the situation even more dangerous as you have less room between them and you with the added aspect if them getting upset. Usually people tailgating are in a hurry and rushing or just annoyed with the person In front. And a lot of the time they will tailgate to get you to go faster or get out of the way. And if your clear in front of you holding your speed at the speed limit like you said you usually are doing. Is the safest bet. Your always going to have a possible of needing to stop fast if you slow down and let them get closer then need to stop there is less room for them to avoid or stop as well. It's all bullshit honestly people need to just stop and give people room. I'm hoping you don't have to deal with this very often but again definitely do whatever your comfortable with just make sure your aware of the possible added risks to doing so. Maybe talk to some more family and friends and get some more opinions it might help you feel better about making the right choice for you. but whatever you choice you always have the option to just pull over and let them go ahead and that's always going to be the safest bet. Stay calm and trust yourself. You'll gain confidence a lot sooner then you think and your own judgment will usually take you in the right direction.
MoonWillow91@reddit
In my experience (I drive a lot for work, and have family I visit out of state) they don’t usually stay closer even if they are initially. I don’t mean this rudely, but I didn’t say I hold my speed at the limit at all. I’ve been driving about 15 years now. Have dealt with it quite often unfortunately, and seems to be more frequently lately. While I do experience anxiety at times I’ve learned to be a mostly defensive driver and stay calm enough to stay aware of my surroundings and options in case of random unforeseen circumstances or random dick heads lacking consideration for anyone besides themselves.
Akraiders907@reddit
You said you drive the speed limit maybe 2-3 over. I took that as normaly drive the speed limit. But ya I'm the same way I drive different speeds depending on time of day, we're I'm going, weather. I also live in alaska so I'm usually on snow, my advice might not be the best advice for driving on payment, I get more nervous if I slow down case they get closer and ice can literally be anywere.
But I've noticed that lately too, I thought at first it was just young people driving like that but honestly it's been more people around my age so maybe my generation is to blame for the assholes. ( sorry on our behalf ) lol. But there are definitely more aggressive drivers and it only seems to be getting worse. I actually feel for new drivers because that can be stressful and dangerous and just put them off driving all together
MoonWillow91@reddit
I think you have me confused for someone else you may be responding too. I definitely did not say that in my comment. Oh I have very little experience with ice except occasional black ice. And usually avoid driving in those times. But ya it seems to be ppl around our age and older. Seems like if I’m not wtfing at ppl in front of me doing stupid or unnecessary stuff, there’s someone behind me I’m oh you’re an AHing.
Akraiders907@reddit
Ya for me i actually feel safer driving on ice and snow because I've driven more on that then on dry pavement lol. It's very different tho and almost like having to learn to drive a completely different way. Southern us you should be pretty safe from it however I think dirt roads are pretty close.... so I'm sure you kinda know what I'm talking about. Everyone had driven down a dirt road before so that's the closest you can get to ice without there being ice. My daughter just passed her permit test last week to so I'm going to have to deal with all that soon, but based on the young drivers I've seen there not to bad like you said timid and unsure sometimes but the older people our age are definitely worse which is suprising lol. I also live by the high-school so there are quit a few of them around here. The one thing I've noticed tho is they never know when it's there turn at a 4 way stop sign. I can't tell you how many times I stop and wait for all 3 sides to go then start going and have to stop cause they decided it was there turn
MoonWillow91@reddit
I’ve driven on ice once. That was enough for me and I don’t drive when roads are iced over lol. Would for major emergency I guess. Definitely not like dirt roads, but they can be tricky too sometimes. Usually only if you’re going fast. But that’s awesome, congratulations to your daughter!
Akraiders907@reddit
Congrats to her... sorry for me?? Lol ya it's going to be a stressful few months for sure. Ice driving is crazy tho, even up here you would think people knew how but it seems like every year everyone forgets. The first 2 or 3 weeks of snow are extremely bad and dangerous, the first snow came just a few days ago and we got half a foot to a foot of snow. All around town. And just by my exit there was 3 cars In the ditch a uhaul van in the ditch on the on ramp and you can see that another car had hit the end of the gaurd rail that runs by the exit and they hit that hard and the highway sign next to that was taken out too. Its insane how bad people get at snow driving after just a few months without it
MoonWillow91@reddit
lol ya, pretty much. I’m glad you’re actually teaching her though, I assume? I had some pointers here and there but I learned to drive by driving and what I’ve learned on laws and advice from random ppl lol. Luckily in my 20s I got pretty alright at it and suck less all the time. Isn’t it ice most the time up there? Do they salt any roads or any?
Akraiders907@reddit
Yes I will teach her, I didn't have anyone teaching me either luckily I found it very natural and didn't have a problem. But I wouldn't put her through the same thing. I'm actually going to start having her ride passenger then tell me everything I'm suppose to do when I'm driving as well. Then I can keep everyone safe by having control and can explain why what she said to do would have been the wrong decision. We already have done parking lot stuff and side roads a bit but with the recent dump of several feet of snow she won't be driving for a week or 2 so I can keep practicing with me driving instead.
As the roads ya it's ice most of the time we have about 4 months without then the rest all snow. A little longer if we are lucky. and no we definitely do not salt any roads. It would be useless and a waste of money up here. Salt melts ice so it would melt through the top layer of ice fairly fast then not help with traction at all and it could never keep the roads clear because it just keeps coming and in some places is up to a foot thick. So we haven't used salt on roads for a long time. It's only gravel and sand mixture. And it only helps for a little bit. If it snows it covers the gravel and they just keep making a gravel ice layered cake basicly lol. It's crazy how much gravel is left over after breakup.
MoonWillow91@reddit
That makes a lot of sense. I’m so glad she has you to help her!! Y’all have a happy Halloween!!
Akraiders907@reddit
Tell her that lol.... thanks, Happy Halloween to you as well.
MoonWillow91@reddit

Akraiders907@reddit

MoonWillow91@reddit
lol, all good.
WJLIII3@reddit
You just gotta find a way to convey the point. That's always the tricky part. I have a hand gesture but it requires I use both my hands and so is not extremely well-composed for driving, obviously. But the tailgater is trying to push you into speeding up, if you slow down, they think they need to push harder. If you can find a way to explain/demonstrate that, in fact, you are pushing them back, and you will not go any faster until they back off, they will, in fact, back off, because they do, in fact, want to go fast.
Akraiders907@reddit
Right lol .... I always love when the tailgater goes from riding your ass to passing you as fast as possible trying to look cool or show there frustration. Then 20 mins later you pass them on the side of the road with a cop behind them writing a ticket.... shows driving fast doesn't always mean getting places faster. It must really frustrate them seeing the car the pulled that on just slowly pass them like there in the " turtle and the hair" race. Lol
POAndrea@reddit
So, lemme get this straight: you don't see anything in the road ahead of you signaling a genuine, identifiable reason to slow down, but you do it anyway because you think the car behind you is too close?Sounds a lot like brake-checking to me. If you must slow down, make sure it truly is for safety purposes, and not to make a point. Otherwise, it's gonna look like a brake check, and when we see those on dashcams, EVERYBODY gets a ticket, not just the tailgater.
MoonWillow91@reddit
Or I’m aware that shit could happen and something in the road could come out at any moment. Someone in front of me could wreck. The possibilities are surmountable. It’s also more likely for them to pass rather than continue to tailgate me. I’m not slamming my brakes all the sudden so no, not a brake check. But think whatever you like. It’s not that I want to piss them off. I just don’t care if I piss someone off that uses unsafe scare tactics and don’t care who they piss off. I will not be intimidated into driving faster than I’m comfortable doing so with someone so close on me. I’m more than willing to let ppl pass when it’s safe for me to do so. I don’t try to control other ppls speed I control mine and if they don’t like it they can go past when safe to do so. I’ve been rear ended while accelerating from a stop sign by someone who ran it without any headlights at night. I will not be intimidated into driving faster or anything else and I sure af don’t try to intimidate other drivers. You’re welcome to think whatever you want about that. I’ll be over here thinking how likely it is that you’re one of those AHs who get pissy if your attempts to intimidate others don’t get you want you want.
POAndrea@reddit
Nobody's telling you to drive faster. I'm telling you to maintain your speed--you know, the speed you already identified as the appropriate, safe speed for the conditions, because that's the speed you were already driving. If you TRULY thought that any of those random events were likely, that there was a genuine risk that you would need to slam on your brakes to avoid, you would be driving at that slower speed even before that bastard started tailgating you.
I'm telling you what I do when someone tailgates me. I don't speed up, I don't slow down. I continue to drive at the speed I already decided was the proper speed. I certainly don't do anything that will further reduce the space between me and another car when I already believe it to be inadequate. I don't tailgate either, largely because I've responded to enough wrecks to know just how badly things can go when one asshole brake-checks the asshole tailgating him.
I'm also telling you what's going to happen when the police officer reviews that tailgater's dash cam after you brake check him. He's going to get a ticket for failure to avoid an accident, you're going to get cited for reckless driving, and then your insurance companies are going to duke it out over who pays for what. I have written dozens of those tickets, and not a one has been dismissed or disproved in court or successfully contested by an insurance company.
I'm also giving you, for free, the lesson I teach in the county's court-ordered Remedial Driving Program.
MoonWillow91@reddit
I’m not wasting my time or energy on reading what you have to say past “I’m telling you to maintain your speed”
First off fuck that and kiss my rear end. Tell me all you want, you’re a stranger on the internet and not some end all be all decider. If you disagree cool. You can say that, and I can choose to listen or not but the moment you start telling me what to do you can fuck right off. There’s been cops in my area that actually suggest slowing down. You think you know better than them too? SMH. There’s a difference between discussing opinions and our own choices vs controlling others. There’s also differences in brake checking and slowing down. The ppl behind me tailgating should be controlling their own temper and actions. Yet you wanna hone in on someone slowing down lol. Okey dokey then. Bye bye.
POAndrea@reddit
I've been a police officer for more than a quarter of a century, a certified traffic investigator for 20 years, my county's Remedial Driving Program instructor for 17, the FTO for my department for 15, and a lecturer at the state police training institute for 11. So I think there's a nonzero chance I might actually know what I'm talking about, but, hey, cool--you just keep doing what you want to do. Just try not to kill anyone on this hill you love so much.
MoonWillow91@reddit
Oh am i supposed to bend down and praise you? Do you think you all have the same opinions and make the same decisions? Well idc if you do cause i know yall don’t. Which makes me wonder if you’re even being honest.. but nah, surely nobody would ever lie on Reddit. You’re definitely someone that gets pissy if your attempts to intimidate ppl don’t work. Crazy if you actually have all that experience you think someone going slower and getting out of the way when safe to do so is as much of a problem as the person recklessly driving to intimidate other ppl. I’m so glad not all cops are like you.
POAndrea@reddit
I don't expect you to praise me--YOU'RE the one who's telling people they should kiss your ass, not me. I'm not the one getting pissy--I haven't told anyone to fuck off or themselves once today. You know what's crazy: the belief that disagreeing with someone providing foolish advice qualifies as intimidation. Not to mention the belief that the person who has only driven on ice once, thinks dirt roads are "tricky", and admits "I learned to drive by driving and what I’ve learned on laws and advice from random ppl lol" is an expert on road safety. Unfortunately, far too many drivers do confuse personal opinion and experience with evidence-based, best-practices driving instruction, and even though they're how I put food on the table, I too would be glad if there were fewer of them on the roads. It's why I returned to college for an MSW and a degree in public safety policy so I could shift focus mid-career from enforcement to educating people--cops and civilians alike. I wish more officers did that, because when people have more information their lives can be better and safer.
City_Girl_at_heart@reddit
Slowing often makes if easier and safer for other drivers to pass.

“Student driver” stickers are not only useless, they just advertise “I’m a shitty driver, but don’t honk at me”
Akraiders907@reddit
They don't advertise they inform, being informed that a person driving in a particular car is very beneficial, you'll know any mistake they made wasn't them being an asshole and get road rage and it can give you the ability to give them a little more space to avoid a potential accident..... saying thats useless makes no sense. The only reason it wounldt be is if the person driving that saw that was dumb enough to not change there own driving to accommodate them. Maybe you should get a sticker saying " shitty driver ".... if everyone that was a shitty driver had a sticker we would know to stay away and there wouldn't be half as many accidents. You'll be suprised how much a simple sign or warning can do.
POAndrea@reddit
Yes! Where they're used, studies show they reduce accidents involving new drivers--not because the new drivers do anything different or better but because the other drivers do. I think they're a great idea, just like the stickers on commercial vehicles that say "Wide right turns" "Stay 50' back". "Makes frequent stops." Why not give other people on the road information that they wouldn't have otherwise? Brake lights tell us someone is slowing, turn signals that someone plans to turn or change lanes, and hazard lights that something funky is going on so we need to be careful; student driver stickers indicate that the person behind the wheel might not yet be making the best decisions on the road so we need to be careful.
onelonecheezit@reddit
Everyone knows they’re a joke, to the point that even some police cars have them on their cruisers.
Akraiders907@reddit
Some police need them with how bad they drive
Akraiders907@reddit
Ya, that's a great way of putting it
onelonecheezit@reddit
Since we seem to like to read into the meaning of a sticker, I take them to mean “I know you’re usually a shitty driver, but drive better around me”.
Akraiders907@reddit
That doesn't mean everyone else will take them to mean the same thing. When I was younger I thought similarly, anytime I noticed a student driver i didn't think twice. it was like an honor role sticker, cool your getting good grades no one cares. But now that I have a kid and she just passed her permit test it's a lot different. I know to give them space and extra time because I know there trying to learn about driving and doing it safely, so instead of just hauling ass around them ( probably scaring the shit out of them) ill make sure to be as accommodating as possible at the same time keeping a safe distance away to make sure I'm not jeopardizing my own car.... also I assume the "student driver" sticker just means shitty driver lol. But it's nice to have a heads up
wizardofahhhs77@reddit
Years ago, I saw a bumper sticker that I liked that read: "Stay clear because my rear is near".
Akraiders907@reddit
That's awesome lol, I've never heard of that one before. The hair pull one is the most common one I see. My favorite one said " back off bumper humper! My brakes are good how's your insurance?" another one is " go around... if it was ment to go fast it wouldn't be shaped like a brick". There are some pretty funny ones for sure lol
WJLIII3@reddit
"If you slow down you might cause a road rage issue" I've been given that warning a lot, but the people who give it seem to be really underestimating the danger of road rage at low speeds. They only get mad after I've slowed us both down to 20mph or lower- what're they gonna do? mildly jostle me?
Akraiders907@reddit
Ya that's why it's best to just drive like they arnt there and if it is making you uncomfortable just pull over and let them go on there way. People that cause road rage are usually pretty pent up and unstable, that's why there are so many clips of road rage out there and mostly stem from really nothing at all. But the smallest thing can set someone off and people have rammed cars off roads, brake checked them, got out and attacked them or there car. Even going as far as pulling a gun and using it. It's not speed that's the issue during road rage. It's the asshole that gets enraged to begin with. And there is a lot they can do, especially when there pissed off
Some-Cream@reddit
Student driver sticker is perfect
Akraiders907@reddit
There is actually a country, i can't think of it off the top of my head. But they require something on the back of every car for new drivers it's some yellow sticker or something and the same for anyone over 75 or something that's the same but purple. They claim it's lowered traffic accidents a lot

Firm-Rest1860@reddit
My car is European and has two rear fog lights, which are essentially two bright red lights, one in each taillight. Whenever I’m being tailgated I hit the button, sometimes on and off while maintaining speed and they back off. Sometimes when I have to panic break I hit them on to let the car know behind me it’s going to be a sudden stop. It’s become my favorite feature on the entire car.
Firm-Rest1860@reddit
For reference, it’s the innermost part of the light that’s illuminated.
DeusXNex@reddit
If there’s 2 lanes, just make sure you’re in the right lane and not the left lane. People like to speed so that’s just not going to change. If youre on a one lane each way type of road the best you can do is put your right blinker on and kind of ride the shoulder to let them pass. That’s what I would do if I was going the speed limit and didn’t want people behind me
the-almighty-toad@reddit
Take your foot off the gas and slowly come to a stop.
Start slightly weaving or otherwise drive a tad erratic and they'll go around you
Brake check.
shotstraight@reddit
You can't control other people, you can only control how you react to them. Either speed up or get some confidence. It sounds like a performance or evasive driving class would do you some good.
Historical_Intern_29@reddit
Nails or quarters out the window... 30% of the time, it works, but the other 70% you get shot at. I definitely didn't learn that lesson the hard way when I was 16.
In all honesty, just let off the gas and brake just enough to make the brake lights turn on before they get too close, and they will pass you when they can on a rural 2-lane road. Other than that, just get used to it because you will run into that your whole life.
Deezn00ts69@reddit
Option 1: be cautious. Pull over to the side and let them pass.
Option 2: be slightly passive aggressive. Slow down gradually until they get fed up of you and overtake you.
Option 3: be petty. Turn your windshield washer off and let the spray hit their car. I've seen people throwing cigarettes too, but I wouldn't advise this.
Option 4: be crafty. Turn your hazards on, they'll think something is wrong and either slow down or just overtake you. Alternatively, as Miata man in the comments mentioned, weave back and forth in your lane.
Option 5: be a dick. Brake check them.
Option 6: slap a "student driver" bumper sticker on your car.
Grand_Taste_8737@reddit
I gradually slow down.
Valuable_Fly8362@reddit
I slow down to the speed limit and let them pass. If they don't pass, I keep slowing down until they do. If our speed reaches 0, I reach for the bear spray.
Background_Night7739@reddit
I live in Connecticut and you can't even come to a full stop at a stop sign or the driver behind will be right on your bumper. If someone is making a turn they brake first and then put on their signal. Not all the drivers are annoying, just enough to make you angry. When your at a red light they approach you going extremely fast and stop suddenly. Not to mention pulling out into your lane when it is unsafe. Some drivers go intentionally slow so you have to pass them. Tailgating is an ongoing thing no matter how fast you drive. The driver that doesn't go when the light turns green is apparently not paying attention. It seems their is not any enjoyment in driving anymore thanks to the morons who drive without any concern for other motorists on the road.

Don't let them push you. Slow down even more. They closer they get, the slower you go.
mandatoryclutchpedal@reddit
Since you are still learning how to drive, get a student driver magnet for the car.
That may help with potential road rage .
Otherwise. Focus on YOUR drive. Not theirs. If you find it distracting, there is nothing wrong with pulling over and letting them pass. Especially at the early stages of driving.
As you get practice and eventually your license...I think your windshield needs cleaning. Better use the windshield washer.
Roshi_IsHere@reddit
You can't. Get some funny bumper stickers. If you're feeling spicy tap the breaks occasionally.

Something about a rattle can paint job that gets people to stay away. Had a 67 GMC pickup with rattle can camo... Also the headlamp bezel's were gone so the headlamps just sat in the hole bouncing around. People avoided me like the plague in that truck.

Competitive_Cut_5472@reddit
First, you need to get over that hump where you're still in learner mode. Second, at some point you will join all the other norms the rest of us do when driving - and yes, sometimes that's speeding.
When someone doesn't follow societal norms, the assholes will let you know they are unhappy.
That never changes so best find a way to deal with it in a more productive way than venting on Reddit.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
What is "learner mode"
LostDadLostHopes@reddit
You're learning muscle reflexes. At some point some things that you are concentrating on will become automatic- like, perhaps, manually remembering to check all the mirrors. Now I do it so fast and so often I never even think of it but can call out each vehicle up and around me, or areas I need to worry about.
The key is not to get distracted while you're building this- so no phone use, no radio, etc. No other people in the car. You want your brain to work learning properly so that, down the road when you do eventually slip up you'll have that memory to pull your ass out.
Also, see if you can't et one of those magnetic 'new driver' stickers for the car. I know when I see them I'll cut a larger swath away because to me it indicates 'unpredictable'.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I legally cannot drive without another person in the car until I have my license
LostDadLostHopes@reddit
Ahhh, gotcha, you mean a parent ? Relative? Or friend? Ours was 'banned' from having same aged / inexperienced drivers. Relatives were fine.
I just put that there to keep you from having 'fun' and getting too distracted.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)

playcrackthesky@reddit

Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)

playcrackthesky@reddit
You drive for a few years and a lot of miles. You just need experience to be confident on the road.
Douggiefresh43@reddit
You can turn your flashers on. This should prompt people to either back off or be more aggressive about passing you. You can also pull off to the right so people can pass you.
It’ll take a long time to learn this, and there’s nothing wrong with playing it safe now, but once people learn back roads, a lot of people will go significantly over the speed limit. So it’s annoying when someone goes the speed limit (btw, going “2-3” over the speed limit is effectively going the speed limit).
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I just don't understand how people feel safe going so fast in deer country, most of when I'm driving is close to dawn or dusk because I'm going to or from college. I see roadkilled deer every day, and when someone is on my ass I cannot stop if one runs out and because I can't exactly tank a deer without slowing down anyway, all I see is anything running out in front of me is an instant accident
LostDadLostHopes@reddit
Because the accident hasn't happened to them and they believe they're invincible.
My Wife got hit at an intersection. Did nothing wrong. Now drives 4 miles out of her way twice or 4x a day to avoid that intersection.
WHEN they wreck, they'll change, but until they do it's going to be 'always someone else'.

This! My first encounter with the unsafe side of driving was trying to take a hairpin turn at 60+ mph, slid right past the turn and thank goodness came to a stop nearby. Pretty much it. You learn how to, how to recover, how to be safe, how to handle, .... and hopefully how NOT to die :(

You won't stop them. Just maintain your speed until they grow a pair and go around.
Tailgaters act like they are badass drivers, but they are bunch of pansies. What is so scary about pulling over to the left into faster traffic? I thought you guys liked going faster.
ramfis7@reddit
You should invest in a deer whistle that attaches to your car. It scares them away. Theyre fairly cheap too.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I didn't know that was a thing!
EthansWay007@reddit
For tailgaters, never brake check them as someone could end up dying, you don’t want to go home with possible manslaughter charge or even just the feeling of having ended a life. Best course is to let off the gas and slowly coast down to get them to go around or even annoy them!
DepartureNegative479@reddit
Yeah, you can say this again. Some moron was riding my bumper and then I had to hit the brakes and I wrenched my left shoulder. Some folks really don’t belong on the road.

Dash-cam for the win! This is the best advice here. With video evidence, any of these morons that crash into you will be much easier to simply claim or even sue. Global-Raccoon-8028@reddit
Let off the gas pedal and let it coast like other people said. Someone impatient enough to tailgate you will just end up going around.
We're about to go down theoretical city here, but if they don't go around and proceed to follow you to a complete stop then it's game on and time to fuck with them. Just sit there and wait for them to go around. If they try getting out of the car to yell at you (very unlikely, but I know you're gonna think about this possibility) then just drive away and leave them standing there like an idiot. If they get back into their car and catch up to you again and tailgate you again (now we're talking so unlikely there's a good chance this will never happen but hey some people are just looking for trouble and want to start shit) then repeat the same process until they go around you. If they still continued you follow you then you could just call the cops and get him pulled over.

Also, my neck really fucking hurts, so I'll take them to court too. And if they are unhinged and come at me, I have pepper spray and big boots.
onelonecheezit@reddit
Pepper spray? As an American driver, I couldn’t imagine driving without my gun.
Myzx@reddit
Well, one part of America isn't the same as every part of America. I'd need to get a CHL or a lockbox to legally carry a gun while driving, and it's far more likely I'll interact with a police officer than an attacker I'd need to fend off with a firearm. So I just don't feel the same way, in my town.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)

That's a solid point. What I would do if I were you is I would call the local police station and report that you have repeated issues with aggressive speeding drivers on that road. Sometimes they will be cool and send a patrol car out there. They do like collecting money from tickets, so win/win.
You have a permit, right?
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
Yes
Necro_the_Pyro@reddit
Don't rely on the pepper spray too much. Pepper spray is not a good self-defense weapon to use in enclosed spaces such as a car (or in general, really. Like it or not, there's no good substitute for a gun when other people have them too). It's easy to block the spray, using objects or clothing, the wind can screw you over and blow it back into your face, it can be taken away from you just like anything else, and especially inside a car you're likely to pepper spray yourself almost as much as your attacker, which means that now you still probably have to fight, except you both have to do it with the same debuff.
Myzx@reddit
I don't ever want to shoot another human being. I trust my level of competence. And I'd be much more concerned if someone took my gun from me. I'd never fire off pepper spray in a car or other enclosed space. I'd be outside of the car to collect their insurance info. I don't know why you hate pepper spray so much. Is there some reason you would benefit if fewer people carried it? That's sus...
Necro_the_Pyro@reddit
Me either. I also don't ever want my house to burn down, but I still have a fire extinguisher.
In an ideal situation, yes. In a road rage situation, potentially no. I had someone attempt to reach through my window to assault me because I stopped at a red light that he wanted to run and got stuck behind me. Also keep in mind that a vehicle is a very effective weapon in the hands of a road rager.
I don't hate pepper spray, I just recognize that it has drawbacks which make it an unreliable self-defense weapon; and I don't think that enough people understand the potential consequences of these drawbacks.
Do you have to try to assume the worst of everyone or does it come naturally?
FarTea3306@reddit

Something I’ve done that’s very effective: In a safe area put your hazard lights on, let them blink at least a few times to make sure the asshole behind you sees them, slow way down (but don’t break check) and get off to the side of the road, for extra help roll down the window and wave them on. Once they pass speed back up and turn off the hazards and go about your way. Works every time.

Way too anxious. Chill out. They're just trying to get to and from and I know there's nothing you can do about it but you're a new and slow driver. You'll drive more and learn, you're on the right road, just keep driving. More importantly calm yourself

As cars get safer and safer to operate, drivers get more and more brazen with their stupid maneuvers.
I once watched an interview with an auto safety researcher, fairly certain he worked for the NHTSA… the line that stuck with me from his explanation of car safety mechanisms was at the very end, where he said something along the lines of, “the one surefire way to make cars safer, would be to remove all seatbelts and airbags and replace them with a spike in the middle of the steering wheel. That rang very true to me.

Timid drivers are the worst drivers on the planet. Anybody who gets spooked while behind the wheel is unpredictable and very dangerous. You need to work on your skills so that you have the confidence to drive in any condition under any set of circumstances; and that includes people behind you who want to go faster than you.
Don't listen to those that tell you to go slower. That's the worst decision you can make. You're only exacerbating the problem. Either speed up or find a place to pull off and let the other driver get around you.
You're going to face a whole lot more than just an impatient driver when you're behind the wheel. Don't be that driver that panics and slows down at everything. You're putting you and everyone else in danger by doing so.
LewdProphet@reddit
Literally everything this person said is the exact opposite of what you should do.
You absolutely do not speed up when someone is tailgating you. You absolutely do not let yourself be pressured into speeding for the sake of an impatient driver. You absolutely do slow down and let them pass you.
DogKnowsBest@reddit
LOL. They're already slow. I've seen timid drivers freak out and stop in the middle of the road. There is ZERO place on the road for a timid and scared cat driver.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
So I'm just supposed to magically be 100% confident when I don't even have my license yet
DogKnowsBest@reddit
No but that's what you have to work towards, and quickly. And that means driving with someone who is as often as you can. Back streets, secondary roads, highways, and interstates. It means putting hours behind the wheel in good weather and bad, day and night, busy and light.
And please learn (which is my biggest pet peeve of all) all the scenarios for stop signs, 2 ways and 4 ways. Don't be "nice". Just follow the rules. When you think you're being nice and letting someone else go when it's not their turn, it's not being nice. It's being an asshole to everyone else on the road who knows the proper order of things and it causes all.soets of problems.
Man0fGreenGables@reddit
Slowing down let’s the dangerous driver pass you more easily and if they don’t pass the slower speed will make the lack of distance between you and their car not be as much of an issue. Dangerous and aggressive drivers are the worst drivers.
norcalgreen1@reddit
Sounds like you don’t need to be on the road…. Keep up with traffic or move over
combustablegoeduck@reddit
That's incorrect.
I typically drive 15 over. when people tail me, we all get the privilege of driving the speed limit because 1) either you're a cop and I was speeding or 2) you are creating a hazardous driving environment, and I'm gonna reduce the likelihood of being crushed to death if I hit an obstruction and now we're all driving too fast to stop with too little time to react.
The speed limit is there for two reasons, to allow the state to extort you for money if the cop wants, and to protect drivers on the road.
If they're driving too slow for you, pass them and continue to expose yourself to state extortion or death.
fairbanks142reddit@reddit
During the day, if someone tailgates me I drop my speed by 5 MPH. The closer they get, the slower I go. And I'm usually that one driving 5 or 10 over the limit. At night, get a friend to pull up in their car behind you. Then carefully aim your rear view mirror so it's literally pointed right at the tailgater's face. As for the deer, get a deer whistle for your front bumper. I'm from a tiny rural town in southern Minnesota. I escaped back in 2003, but every time I go back to visit I am constantly amused by what the intentionally ignorant is now considering cool. I am seriously thinking about getting one of those obnoxious diesel turbo whistles for my 2004 Subaru Outback "lesbian" ride.

You have several options.
You can speed up (not really recommended).
You can slow down. (can cause road rage).
You can ignore it. (possible accident).
You can leave that roadway (rarely a true option).
nounge2scrounge@reddit
Honestly the best way to get a tailgater off your back is to let them around you. If there's just one lane then just pull off onto the shoulder for a sec and wave them around you.
Sure-Ground-883@reddit
LITERALLY same. I have my permit and have this issue too. Every single time I get on the road without fail - SOMEONE IS ON MY ASS. but, most of the time I don’t notice them right away then when I do, I speed up a tiny bit. Like 2-3 mph lol. But I just stay where I’m at and they can do what they want. Everyone tells me over and over so NOT worry about who’s behind you.
GetmeoutofUtah37@reddit
Set the cruise at whatever the speed limit is, then 1mph at a time, slow down until they pass, until you hit the minimum speed limit, or until you get to your destination.
NoAlCepo@reddit
If you're being tailgated then people behind you are asking you to either speed up or move to the right. If you're on the left lane they're not supposed to go around you, you as the slower traffic are supposed to keep right. If you just got your permit and are panicking, you need to work on your confidence and not get in the habit of being a timid driver. If there's no right lane and you're going 2-3mph over then that is CRAZY slow and I guarantee you're pissing off everyone behind you being a timid driver. Don't be afraid of flooring that gas pedal; you'll adjust with practice and a deer could hit you at any speed. Go faster; you won't kill your mom or hit a tree. The drivers behind you are only asking you to be considerate.
In Europe to be polite they use the left blinker and 2 quick high beam flashed instead of tailgating and everyone ne knows what it means....but that never really caught on in the US so the only way to "ask" here is to tailgate.
Rokdog55@reddit
People tailgate everywhere. 1st, relax. 2nd, stay alert. 3rd, maybe slow down to 5 miles under the posted speed limit (if it's 35 MPH. If it's 45 or more, slow down to 35 until they pass you. You don't need that rear end accident happening because you're both flying down that country road and you have to make that sudden stop. A sudden stop at 35 will still cause them to run into you if they're that close, but the impact will be a lot less than the sudden stop at 55.

You can’t control what other people do. If you’re that freaked out about it pull over and let them pass. Getting worked up won’t change anything.
jmajeremy@reddit
They aren't likely to try to run you off the road, a lot of people don't even notice they're tailgating, they just automatically start following the car ahead of them closely. If it's bothering you, you can either pull over and let them pass, or gradually slow down by 1-2 KM/mph at a time until they take the hint and pass you or back off.
Where I live the standard speed limit is 80 KM/h on 2-lane highways, and people routinely drive 100 KM/h or more, there's just a lot of careless speed demons out there. Part of defensive driving is learning how to deal with them and not letting it spook you.
PerfectContribution4@reddit
I feel you. I live in the country and it's a regular occurrence. It really pisses me off. And I easily go 20 over the speed limit. My concern is that if a deer runs out on the road and I even touch my brakes...I'm getting smashed into. People just don't get it. If someone is riding me really bad. I just pull over and let them pass. It's not worth it.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
That's exactly my worry. I was in a rear ending accident as a passenger and it was bad enough that a woman had to be extracted with the jaws of life. Jacked up truck guy was on his phone going over the speed limit, school bus was in front of the woman, she slowed down because the bus was turning. He rammed into her and sent her flying into the bus

Yes

Whenever I find myself being tailgated on a backroad like yours, I will find somewhere I can pull over safely, signal right, and begin to slow down. This usually tells the person behind you that you’re going to let them pass and they’ll give you some room.

Best bet is when you get somebody that tailgates, find the next turnout and pull over so they can pass. Is it in a passing lane area or double yellow? I lived in rural areas my whole life 46 years I know how the road works. And on 2 lane county roads they have turn outs for slower traffic to pull over to let traffic pass. As a new driver, you should take advantage of the turnouts until you get get more experience behind the wheel. Wish you luck. Some people are just Aholes and nothing you can do but get out of the way asap.

I had a friend that did this, even on the freeways. He would also pass and then hang out in the passing lane. I think he didn’t realize how annoying he was to other drivers.
When it happens to me I just tap the breaks a couple times. If that doesn’t work I actually slow down a few mph. (Gently, don’t slam on the brakes.) and then speed back up. Doing that a few times usually works.

Yo, I also deal with Midwest rural traffic (i.e the truck situation you mention happens more often than not )
At night I'll actually, pull over and wait for them to pass. Too many deer and too bright when they're riding me so it's not worth the risk.
During broad daylight their lights don't affect me as much as the tailgating. I'll usually just continue on and slow down to maybe 5-10 under in hopes they go around
Hungry-Ad-7120@reddit
Lightly tap the brake and start to slow down, trust me, they won’t rear end you. Don’t brake check, but slow down steadily until they go around you. I’ve done this to drivers when there’s clearly two lanes on my left wide open and they could easily pass me.
If they’re still persisting, flash your lights twice and honk once or twice. Give it a few seconds, and do it again until they pass you. Since you’re a new driver don’t rush on someone else’s account, if they’re able to pass they should. That’s why it’s (literally) called the passing lane.
Bean_Boy@reddit
Throw on your blinker and slow and pull to the side until they pass you if you feel unsafe. Or just slow down more and more (gradually) until they go around you.
Puzzleheaded_Gear622@reddit
You keep driving exactly the way you are and don't do anything different. If it's really ridiculous you can gently tap on your brakes and go ahead and start slowing down slowly so that they can go around you if they want.
OhioResidentForLife@reddit

Steve-C2@reddit
I'm going to share with you what a police officer told me when someone was tailgating me when I was going the speed limit. He was very pleasant about it, as well.
"Sir, when you have someone following you too close, pull off to the side and let them pass."
When I pointed out to the officer that I was going the speed limit, he said, "That's fine, and it's not your job to enforce the speed limit. If you're going the speed limit and someone is following you too close, you get out of their way. It prevents accidents and road rage. Just let them go their way."
You don't know who is behind you, what they're doing, where they're going, and what their response will be to going from cruising to speed limit. They may be reasonable and say, "Oh, well, I guess this guy is keeping me honest" or it may turn into a road rage incident that gets on the evening news. You don't know if it's an emergency worker on their way to an emergency in a their own personal vehicle without lights, trying to save a life. You don't know if it's someone who is racing to see a family member for maybe the last time. You don't know if they're in crisis and trying to get somewhere to hopefully resolve something. You don't know if they're just tired and want to get from A to B. You just know that they're on your hind end at a speed/distance ratio that is uncomfortable. Why do you want to press your luck? Just get out of the way.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
Ah fuck I never even thought about how I might be preventing someone from ever seeing a family member again, I just dont understand why people don't just pass me when there's space in front of me and room to pass

Sometimes I have this problem too. I drive an old jeep, max 65mph, and it is not fast. Either people realize its slow and move out the way or they're going to be sitting there for a while. Either way they're not dictating how I drive.
ReddtitsACesspool@reddit

ActiniumNugget@reddit
Recently moved to more rural area and it's just the way it is. It sucks. Basically, to get to town is a 15-mile two lane road, 55mph limit. I go 60mph the entire time. There always seems to be a pickup truck 2 inches from my ass.
I've actually done some "testing" (you know, for science...) and gone significantly faster when I see a pickup join the road behind me. Doesn't matter. They'll still be two inches from me and zoom past when there's a straight. I suspect that I could fit a jet engine to my car, be doing 500mph, and their would still be a Dodge truck right up my ass. It's like some weird scientific law or something.
I've come to the conclusion that it's a weird dominance thing. Maybe their life is kinda boring, and they're insecure, and getting out on the road is a chance to prove themselves?

With a permit, you should have a licensed experienced driver with you. Worry about what's in front of you, if you are going the speed limit you are ok. If the guy behind you is too intimidating with tail gating, safely pull over at a safe spot and let them pass
MichiganGeezer@reddit
You drive your car. Try not giving them the authority to drive your car for you by "pushing you along" from behind.
Also: you probably need a dashcam with a camera pointing to the rear. When a guy finally hits you you'll have proof that he'd been riding your ass like a hemorrhoid for miles and miles.
Insurance companies love that sort of thing.
JB_Scoot@reddit
Well I’m happy your aware of some of these things when you don’t even have your license yet. So good for you, keep it up.
On a 2-Lane road there’s nothing you can do. So you’re doing the best you can with what you’ve got.
But eventually you will begin driving on Freeways. Always remember that slower traffic is supposed to keep right. It doesn’t say “Slower traffic keep right if, and only if you’re not speeding” like some people think it does. Don’t be those people.
Good luck in your driving in the future. Hopefully one day you’ll be able to make a cross-country drive. Its worth it!

I drive 8-10 over on back roads in my area. When this happens, which isn't often. I slow down and set my cruise right on the speed limit. Most take the hint and back off or they pass me. Whatever you do, don't break check or shoot them the bird.

Obsequiously driving "at the speed limit" is probably what's doing it to you. It sounds like you're generally scared on the road and drive in an unpredictable fashion ("when I'm being tailgated I start to panic"; "I'm petrified that a deer is going to run out", etc.)
It's entirely possible that you're a general impediment to others on the road, but you've portrayed yourself here as some conscientious driver who for NO GOOD REASON has "EVERYONE" coming up on them.
It's you. Hi. You're the problem. It's you.
knatehaul@reddit
I used to live in a town like that. Any time someone would tailgate or high beam me for going the speed limit I'd start going slower. As others have said. Do what you are doing but don’t speed when you are in a passing area. You would be surprised at how many people do the limit with the solid line beside them, then subtly speed up when other cars can pass. That increases frustration around you
Exotic-Plankton5593@reddit
If you are driving the speed limit in the left lane move to the right lane let them pass. If it’s 1 lane and you are doing the speed limit just stay focused on what’s in front of you. If you're going over 40mph, spray your windshield washers (front windshield) and it'll spray back and leave a mist on their windshield. It's so satisfying when they put their wipers on to wipe it away and slow down. And if they don't stop, just keep spraying them.
AdamZapple1@reddit
people who don't like buying washer fluid love this one trick.
Necro_the_Pyro@reddit
Whenever someone mentions this it always reminds me of this guy I knew in California. He drove an ancient pickup truck that could go the speed limit but not much faster, and he had a little mister (I think it was like a 12v fish tank pump attached to a small sprinkler nozzle or something) rigged up so that the sprinkler nozzle stuck out underneath his tailgate handle and it was pretty much invisible. He had it hooked up to a bottle (literally, like an old Gatorade bottle) of used motor oil; and if people were tailgating him and refused to pass, he would flip a switch under his dash to turn on the pump and spray oil on their windshield, so that when they turned their wipers on it would smear everywhere and make a huge mess that was a pain in the ass to get off. Obviously not saying you should do this, although it is tempting to give into the intrusive thoughts sometimes.

KaleyKingOfBirds@reddit
Word of advice, the only time people behind you matter is if you have to brake hard or change lanes. But they are responsible for their distance, and not hitting you. Has long as you are doing the limit, or going with the flow on a highway, behind you doesn't matter. On the country road: you're being tailgated, you want them to pass. Anywhere the road gets wider, or there is a flat straight away with lots of visibility, slow down 2-5 and hug the shoulder. They should get the message. If they don't pass, they are just useless, ignore them and carry on your way.

Plane_Technology4932@reddit
Back county roads with little law enforcement I run just under the felony speed limit 15 over cause I don’t care, but when I’m stuck in traffic people who don’t use cruise if they can’t maintain their speed, or speed up on places you can pass and slow down in places you can’t, if I’m not able to keep up with traffic I let people pass by getting on the shoulder dropping to 45 and letting them clear out so you don’t get someone like me stuck behind you the whole trip

Ease of the gas (don't brake) to drop 5mph or so. Then hit the gas and hit a solid 5 over, to open up a gap. Then, if/when they crawl back up on your ass, ease off the gas again. Then speed back up. They will get sick of this and either a) hang the hell back or b) pass. Their choice.

Generally if I notice someone riding my ass, I just slowly tick down the speed on my cruise control until he overtakes, the longest someone stuck around was about 3 minutes, i was doing 100kph, he finally got the hint and overtook me when I was down to 57kph (the overtaking lane was clear the whole time and there was virtually no traffic)

Lucky you aren't here in the UK, where people in Range Rovers do this on country lanes that are single track for miles with hedges both sides.
They obviously have some sort of ESP that allows them to predict what is behind every blind bend and so want to drive faster than we mere mortals, crippled by dependence upon our feeble sense of vision.
Toastywaffle_@reddit
The answer is to actually slow down, it does make it easier for them to overtake you but this isn't the reason you should do it. Slowing down means that they have to also slow down to maintain the same distance, but their stopping distance will be shorter at the lower speed, so if you have to brake suddenly they are less likely to hit you.
MDCB_1@reddit
Rear wash wiper action normally does the trick. Keep your reservoir full so to speak!! :) Safe Travels!
WJLIII3@reddit
I slow down until their distance is safe.using the driver's ed rule- 10 ft per 10 mph. If they're within 5 feet of me, I shouldn't be going more than 5. If they start flickering their lights or honking, that's when they get the hand gesture. Not- mind, you, the classic hand gesture, not "the bird" as it were. I just indicate to them I expect them to maintain a safe distance with my hands, I hold them both out the window very close, then slowly spread them apart, which is really quite safe at 5mph, despite having to control the wheel with your knee. And when they back up, I speed up to above the limit again. And if they get close again, I slow down again.
The important thing to remember is you have the power. What they want from you is something they want from you and that means you have all the power. Just make it worse for them until they do it right.
The_Chemist187@reddit

Just learn to relax. I spent two years working as a courier. I drove three different vehicles. When driving the small, two door hatchback I got tailgated all the time. When driving my truck I seldom got tailgated. I drove the same way in both vehicles. I normally drive 10 over the posted speed limit. If someone tailgates me I clean my windshield. They normally back off pretty quickly and you see their wipers come on, lol.
Driving here in the U.S. is a peace of cake. In other parts of the world if you don't learn to drive extremely aggressively you will never get anywhere. Worse you may get killed. You learn to merge into traffic with inches to spare. Who ever has the loudest horn and most guts gets there first. Then you come back here and drive the same way you did there. Some of those every day A-hole drivers somehow freak out and end up in the ditch. I had my turn signal on for three blocks. You didn't back off and let me get over. I had a few inches of clearance and changed lanes anyway. It's not my fault you thought I was going to hit you, jerked the wheel right, went off the road, across the sidewalk, over the berm, and ended up in a parking lot. Keep peppering your brakes. Make it awkward for them, just make sure you have their attention before you do this. Give them a hazard light to start. They will then either over take or back off.
evanp36@reddit
on a 2 lane road just ignore it, honestly nothing you can do about it.
Hatta00@reddit
Tailgating is never the fault of the person in front. The person following you is making a choice to follow too closely.
But you do have a responsibility to drive safely, and that means slowing down in dangerous conditions. If they're going to hit you, it's safer at a lower speed. If you have to brake for an obstacle, going slower gives you more time to brake which gives them more time to react.
Don't brake check, just pick your foot up off the gas.
evanp36@reddit
on a 2 lane road this is correct on the left lane of a a 4 lane interstate this is just plain wrong.
Pup111290@reddit
That's exactly what I was taught when I was taking classes for my CDL. Slowing down is safer and makes it easier for them to pass you
Soup0rMan@reddit
This is funny to me. It's how it should be, but I work near a freight company and I swear semis with governed speeds absolutely refuse to not use every mph they're allowed.
Like, truck A is governed at 67, truck B at 68. A sure as shit won't slow down to 65 so B can get out of the way.
Pup111290@reddit
Yeah a majority of OTR truckers don't like to slow down for anything, part of that is the ridiculous timelines they have to deliver their cargo. I drove dump truck and got paid hourly so I was never rushing

I'll tell you how to fix this. When i don't feel like going fast, or when I'm already going fast but clearly the guy behind me is in a bigger hurry, i just pull over. Now, I'm fully aware of what you mean by country roads so I'm gonna specify quick. Wait until you've got a real good clearing up ahead and there's no blind bends behind you. Turn on your 4 way hazards and slow down to a stop. If you can't move over that's fine, they'll get over it. If they don't get the picture, open your window and wave them around. Be sure to immediately start driving after they pass as long as there's nobody coming so you can make it crystal clear why you pulled over. Idk if they'll get the picture and learn from it, but might as well try. This is perfectly legal and totally safe as long as you can see down the road and people can see that you're stopped with enough time to safely stop behind you. I'm not going more than 10 over anymore because I'm not a stupid fucking child and I've got better shit to spend my money on than speeding tickets, so they can just pass me ya know?
One-Inch-Punisher-@reddit
I was taught in these situations that you need to slow down. Make sure to use the brakes to do it, too. This tells them you are intentionally slowing and they’ll either deal with it or make the logical choice and go around. Plus that way if they do hit you, it’ll be at a slower speed
RecommendationUsed31@reddit
Ignore them. They hit you they are at fault. Speeding on a 2-way road is idiotic. People who tailgate like that are looking to get into an accident. I saw people die because of someone being stupid on a two lane road. You continue to drive cautiously and do what you need to do to keep yourself safe

The last thing I suggest is maybe make a sign. Student driver please don't tailgate.
The tailgaters are 100% wrong. Not only that it's not cool to do that
I only make these suggestions to ease your anxiety and if you don't feel safe doing the 1st 2 then dont

poopypantsmcg@reddit
Frankly you kind of just have to deal with it. There's nothing you can do that doesn't have the potential to induce a Road rager.
johnnyhammerstixx@reddit
Flip your hazards on, pull over and wait for them to go around you.
FacelessPotatoPie@reddit
I’m usually 5-10 over the limit on anything that’s not residential/school zoned. I’m always in the right lane unless I’m about to make a left turn. I’ll just take my foot off the gas and coast to a stop until the idiot gets off my ass.
StoryHorrorRick@reddit
Press the breaks every five seconds. They'll get mad and go around. Be sure to look at them as they're passing by you too.
FarConstruction4877@reddit
Stop looking behind you. Whatever is behind you does not concern you. Put more distance in front of you to avoid harsh breaks. Get a dashcam.
TotallyMadeToUpVotr@reddit
Sounds like the anxiety is potentially more dangerous than the tailgater. I’d shift your mirrors so you can’t see their car and just drive the same safe way you always drive.
Fabulous_Scale4771@reddit
Id ignore them. Just focus on the road. Remember…if they do rear end you, they will be at fault…doesn’t hurt to also have a Dashcam while you’re at it. Highly recommend it.
dyaldragon@reddit
Best way to deal with them is to wait until there's an opportunity for them to pass (dotted line and no oncoming traffic) and then take your foot of the gas a little to slow down. Roll your window down and wave them by.
If they pass, everything's over. If they don't, it's now their fault they are behind you, so you keep doing what you feel comfortable doing.
The biggest key is not to let other bad drivers make you drive worse.
murphsmodels@reddit
You can also play games with them. When I'm driving long distances, I'll usually set the cruise control. If somebody starts tailgating and not going around, I'll slowly start bringing the cruise down until they get the hint. My record is 35 mph in a 65mph zone. Of course I speed back up as soon as they're around me.
Spare_Special_3617@reddit

Mission_Mode_979@reddit
That’s your issue, you’re going the speed limit. People in the country don’t, they fly down country roads. Doesn’t matter what country, or nation or whatever. Long stretch of bullshit and no cops? Go 30 over.
All you gotta do is either grit your teeth until they pass, passive aggressively slow down and force them to merge, speed up or do the ol Kansas City shuffle of YOU merging over to the other lanes, hitting the brakes and letting them pass, then merging over.
_BladeStar@reddit
I don't want to pass you. I'm just minding my own business. The reason I am behind you is because you happen to be in front of me. Am I a bad driver? No, I'm a professional driver. Maybe the reason I want you in front is because I want you to hit the deer (or any other road hazard) before I do. Maybe I'm concerned that if I get in front of you you will be too busy on your phone and rear end me. I am perfectly content to continue driving at the same speed as you. Maybe they are being a bit nosy. What kind of car do you drive?
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I don't have my own car so I'm in my mom's SUV. I never use my phone while driving. Idk what there is to be nosy about, I'm small enough you can't even see my from behind, and that's another reason I'm afraid because airbags going off is a death sentence for me. I can't reach the pedals if i sit the reccomended 10 inches away.

I grew up in a small town aswell.. we were always taught to pull over on the side when safe, hit your blinker and start slowly pulling over on the side. Take your time they will pass.
indiana-floridian@reddit
Stay calm, mostly ignore them.
Sometimes it's more innocent than it seems. I have cataracts, and have stopped driving. But for a while, before I realized the problem, it was a lot easier to stay behind someone else going my general direction, and just go the same speed as them for a while. I always tried not being too close, of course, I know no one likes that. If your complaint is 100% about people too close, well that was not me.
You cannot control the people behind you. What you can do is avoid hard stops, so it's less likely they will run into you. You can go boringly slow... not 10 mph, but not the fastest one either... most tailgaters will pass you if you're not fast enough to suit them.
I hate when they tailgate with their bright lights on. I wish there was a way to reflect it back to them!
Calm-Aspect-7336@reddit
I wish that ppl would tailgate me. Everyone drives at least 3-4 cars behind me. Maybe they think I'm unpredictable or just just weird. (I am weird/have mental illness and could be on the spectrum but no one knows that right?). My car color is gold with a purple chrome frame. I added the chrome frame to make my SUV look younger, but no. I am a 20 something driving a lame, boring family/old-man car. We all have our own specific problems on the road. We all get pissed off about different things. We should be grateful to be driving and get to go anywhere we please. Should take our worries away. But it's easier said than done ffs

IntrepidRobot@reddit
Based on your edit, they are unlikely to be able to get around you. People tailgate to signal you're going slow (and some are just a$%#). If you're just learning, get a sticker that says New Driver or something to that affect - it'll be the clue to the person behind you to chill out and expect to take the scenic route (nothing wrong with that either).
ajkimmins@reddit

TonsOfFunky@reddit
Don't brake check, just slowly slow down 10 - 15 mph until they pass you. If they don't pass, turn on your hazards and pull onto the shoulder a bit and come to a stop.
fixittrisha@reddit
People are dicks especially in the car when they don't have to actually confront you with their bad behavior. If something happens you just slam on the brakes to avoid the accident you need to avoid. If they rear-end you it's their fault. It's their responsibility to make sure that they have enough following distance to stop safely.
If you want to be Petty you could just start slowing down more and more and more until they give you the following distance you need. But that is how you start a road rage situation so pick your battles
whodidntante@reddit
Drivers cannot legally pass you if you are going the speed limit. If you drive under the speed limit, they might do so.
AtticusFlinch246@reddit
Put a rear view dash cam in your car, when someone starts to tailgate you just take you foot off the gas. Don't hit the brakes, that's brake checking and it's illegal. Just take your foot off the gas and your car will begin to slow down on its own, the camera will show the truck behind you tailgating and then getting even closer without your tail lights showing as long as you don't hit your brakes. This also lowers the speed you are going if you do get rear-ended. In a car accident the vehicle behind you is always at fault unless you hit your brakes and brake check them. That's what the camera is for, to prove you didn't hit your brakes.

Tailgaters lack self-control, so I provide it for them, mostly by reducing my speed very slowly until it becomes completely ridiculous for them to have not passed me by then. So they just end up wasting their mental energy and time staying behind me.

You say you are in the country. Can you pull over and let them pass? Alternative_Taste204@reddit

Fuck them. If they’re in a rush, that’s their problem. It takes me exactly 30 minutes to get to work. Exactly. So I get my egregiously lazy ass out of bed and leave a few minutes earlier. Enough time for me to stop and get tacos, or have a flat tire, or get stuck behind a school bus that stops at EVERY HOUSE (wtf make them fat kids walk a few feet).
An emergency on someone else’s part isn’t my emergency.
Bonus if you trick them into road raging right in front of the cop that runs radar at the EXACT same spot every day.
Also, please rear end my piece of shit car, I need a new one, they can pay for it.

dirtydopedan@reddit
Most people speed so if you go the posted speed limit you will be in the minority and will be regularly tailgated and overtaken. I’m not saying this is right or wrong but it is the reality.
Rest assured; most likely the tailgater won’t run you off the road unless you try something stupid like brake checking.
And
You could possibly hit a deer, but swerving to avoid it is worse, so just hit that sucker head on.
Learning to drive is really scary and it’s a good sign you are anxious. It will make you a better driver if you can overcome it as opposed to someone with no fear that is more prone to driving reckless. At least that is my two cents. I wish you the best of luck!

You can’t stop people from tailgating. You can 1) pull onto the shoulder if there’s room to let them by, or 2) slow down, which will make it less likely they’ll hit you if you have to stop suddenly and make the collision less serious if they do, and might prompt them to pass. What you don’t want to do is speed up, because they’ll most likely keep tailgaiting anyway making any potential collision worse and it could earn you a ticket.
RikoRain@reddit
Technically... Drive the same. Although most driving courses would recommend if you're being tailgates or someone with high beams is behind you and you cannot see well.. then you are to move to "cautious driving" state, which is 10 mph below whatever the speed limit is (like as if it were raining or snowing). It's considered an "unsafe driving condition". This is actually why people started slowing down when tailgated. Now it's mostly to be a prick, but the tailgater is also the prick.
And I am a prick too. I wanna get home fast as well, but if you ride my bumper, we're going 25 in a 60 the ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE ROAD (it's a no pass single lane, no turn offs). Flash your high beams at me? Why, my sir, you've now just shocked me and now I think you're warning me of a hazard so there goes my brakes! Oops!
Usually makes them back off. I'm also generous. Once they back off, we go back to 60 :)
LightEarthWolf96@reddit
You could try getting "caution: new driver" magnets to put on the car when you're driving, doesn't have to be that exact wording just something that let's other drivers know that you're a new/student driver.
If you're lucky this will encourage the jerk tailgates to actually back off. The thought being that as a new driver you're more likely to make a mistake than an experienced driver and they'll want to have extra distance from you if you do. A good driver continuesly gets better with more experience and a magnet like I suggest above advertises your lack of experience.
However the flip side of this is that sometimes magnets like this seem to encourage jerk aggressive drivers to be more aggressive. No way to know how other drivers will react to the magnets until you try them if you choose that option

No. You’re not going too slow. If they want to go faster, they can wait for a passing zone. I could be said, in some jurisdictions, if you’re holding up more than three cars you need to pull over (when it’s safe to do so) and let them pass. Otherwise, just ignore them. Easier said that done but that is part of getting comfortable with driving, letting go of your nervousness about other drivers. And definitely don’t think it would be your fault in any way if they were to hit you.

Assuming you are staying in the far right lane on multilane roads (in the US), doing at least the speed limit, then yes, they can and should go around. And on single lane roads, if you are just doing the speed limit, often thats too slow, as unfair as that sounds.
I hate to say it, but if 99 percent of people are doing something that you aren't, you have to look inwards for source od the problem. If you are too scared to be on the road, then you are a danger to yourself and others. Hopefully, more experience will make you more comfortable and able to keep up with the flow of traffic. Hope this doesnt come off as too harsh

My state requires drivers ed in HS… the neighboring state leave all driver training up to the family. (We live on the border and go back and forth multiple times a day). Having that on my bumper actually kept people off my backside. UltimateGammer@reddit
The closer they get the slower you go.
You're already thinking about a possible collision. So the logical thing is to make that collision less deadly by slowing down.
Keep slowing down until you feel safer.
That's a general rule for motoring. Speed kills in every sense.

Actually sorry… i see that you are a woman. the speed at which you drive is alright by me. i don’t want people to die because of something i said. Also please, when backing up, look behind you… dont just rely on the rear view mirror. I can tell by your sassy and feisty attitude that you are mistaken likely highly attractive. and based on the roads you drive on most likely live in a rural community. Therefore i would recommend getting married to someone who provides well for you because you seem to not enjoy driving so much and honestly women never were geared for it in the first place

The best idea in my experience is to pull over and just let them go when it's safe to do so.
Is it frustrating to let someone driving like a toddler throwing a tantrum have their way? Yes. But think of your own safety; you're absolutely right that tailgaters make your driving more dangerous and limit your ability to brake in the case of an emergency.
Happyjarboy@reddit
I had a 1971 Ford F250, it was so rusty that the tailgate fell off, and the sides was held on by a bed rail. It had a massive rusty beam bumper, and a great big hitch and one hell of an exhaust leak. I just dared people with their new BMW to get close to that back bumper.
WageSlaveEscapist@reddit
Super bumper shock attenuator by Moh Mfg. Works for me. I just slow down with my cruise control to allow more room to compensate for the tailgater. Message is always received.

I bet we live in the same area. I have the exact same situation as you, except I have my jr license now.
I was thought that a double-tap of the brakes can work, but I’ve found the 4-ways or pointing at the speed limit sign more effective.
HandsumGent@reddit
Stay out the left lane since you are a new driver. Break check they will fall back real quick.
Whole-Database-5249@reddit
Put your hazard lights on..as if something is wrong with your car. They will soon drive around you.
juciydriver@reddit
Just keep in mind, right or wrong, if there's an accident, you could die.
For me, I want them to pass ASAP. If passing or pulling isn't an option, I reduce my speed for safety.
I'd 100% rather be safe but I do love seeing people lose their minds when I go half the posted speed.
standardbasicnormal@reddit
step 1. stop caring. if you dont get stressed about it, then the only person theyre hurting is themself.
step 2. reduce speed. if you cant avoid noticing or caring, then fuck with 'em! take your foot off that gas baby, let 'em know that bitch behavior does not get them their way.
step 3. if youre brave, break check them and speed off. give 'em a real good panic.
According-Capital-45@reddit
I prefer a good engine brake. It does the slowing down without the warning of brake lights. Just don't try an engine brake at high speeds because no part of your drivetrain will be happy about that.
JMHorsemanship@reddit
DO NOT DRIVE SLOWER WHEN BEING TAILGATED!!!
I swear these people know nothing about defensive driving. This will just anger the person tailgating you, making them more anxious and stressed to go faster and more likely to cause a wreck.
Maintain the speed limit and ignore the fact they even exist. If they hit you, it's their fault.
You could drive 5 over or more as a courtesy, but depending on the area and cops they might give you the ticket for speeding rather than them a ticket for tailgating.
If youre really worried, get a rear dash cam.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
I don't think people here are understanding that I'm not scared of getting a ticket, I'm scared of getting in a wreck and killing my mom or an innocent person
GadgetNeil@reddit
consider that this fear is mostly irrational. You’re afraid that they are going to rear end you, but think about it, the only reason that would happen is if you suddenly brake. Since there is no one in front of you directly, there is no reason you would suddenly brake.
Raincandy-Angel@reddit (OP)
Deer, I've had a dog run in front of me, animals in the road aren't a rarity especially because dawn and dusk are when I'm usually driving
GadgetNeil@reddit
then I take back what I said. I think in this case you only have two options. One is to drive faster. The other is to pull over periodically, to let people pass you. Presumably you could do this where there is a shoulder, or a driveway or a road to turn onto. or you could slow down a little more, put your hazards on and pull over to the right as far as possible, especially if you see that there is no one coming in the opposite direction. That way, the person will know to pass you.
I find these situations very uncomfortable, so I can understand why you would have anxiety if you were a new driver .
JMHorsemanship@reddit
Then follow the law and drive the speed limit, that's what it's there for. If you go faster or keep slowing down and pulling over, you are much more likely to get in a wreck
A_Scared_Hobbit@reddit
Back in driving school, they always used to harp on about being consistent and predictable. Constantly pulling over and changing speed is neither of those things. So I agree with you there.
However, depending on where you live and how sensitive the traffic cops in your area are, it may be better to drive with the speed of traffic rather than strict adherence to the speed limit. For example, in my area I've never seen or heard of anyone getting pulled over until they're going significantly above the speed limit- typically at least 20 over on non-residential streets. So most drivers go about 10 over, without worrying about tailgaters or police.
JMHorsemanship@reddit
I've been pulled over for speeding going 5 over. Even in the city where cops typically don't care about speeding. I've known people to be pulled over for going just 1 over...and even ticketed. I don't risk my own ass just because somebody is impatient. I always leave with enough time to make it to my destination, so I'm chilling. I also redid my entire cars sound system so it sounds amazing in there....no reason to want to get out
A_Scared_Hobbit@reddit
That's honestly obscene to me that the cops have nothing better to do than pull over somebody who is going 1 over. That's just ridiculous. Our speeding fines are based on dollars/km so a 1 over ticket is literally three bucks. It's not worth anything to the cops, so they don't bother.
JMHorsemanship@reddit
that's crazy to me. but makes sense

The best thing for you to do is to stay calm and focus on what's in front of you. Make sure your vehicle is maintained and you follow all safety laws (wear your seatbelt, don't have a lot of loose junk in the car, etc). There is nothing else you can do.
Key-Ad-1873@reddit
A. Go fast enough they can't keep up (not a good idea)
B. Go slow enough that they pass (also not a good idea on anything other than multilane roads)
C. Learn to deal with it and stop caring
All jokes aside, there is nothing you can do to get them to back off, every option is illegal, dangerous, and/liable cause them to road rage. All you can do is: extend your braking and acceleration zones, make all your inputs soft and gentle (aka brake softly for a longer distance), and not panic or worry about them. People tailgating isn't an issue as long as you don't let it effect you
PandoraClove@reddit
Do you have bumper stickers with small print? I'm only partially joking.
KinkaJac97@reddit
I drive 5 mph over on most roads, and I still have people tailgating me. When I'm in that situation, I completely ignore them. I don't look out my back window, and I pretend they're not there. If they want to pass in a no passing zone, then that's on them. I refuse to get a speeding ticket just because someone wants to drive fast. The way I see it if I'm in front of you, and I'm driving the speed limit, and you're tailgating me, I'm just gonna drive the speed limit and you are going to have to deal with it. I never let people pressure me to drive faster.
zacmobile@reddit
If they don't give a safe amount of space for the speed you're travelling at then you need to adjust your speed appropriately to the space you're given. I do the speed limit on two lane secondary highways all the time and am rarely tailgated but this is what I do and they back off pretty quick.

Valuable_Argument_44@reddit
First, stay in the right lane unless passing, for the love of God please stay to the right (unless your country drives on the left then idk how yall do it). That might be why they are staying on your ass, they want you to move to the appropriate lane for your speed. Statistically speaking, when changing lanes more often, you’re increasing the odds of an accident. So when you’re making everyone go around tou, you’re increasing the odds for everyone who passes. And you can get pulled over for being in the left lane and not passing, depending on jurisdiction.
If this is NOT the case and they are just being assholes, I tend to actually wash my windshield. It gets on their car and sends a message.
Lololololol889@reddit
Fuck it, I slow down. Not to be petty, but imo it's much safer to get into a collision at 40-45 mph than 55-60 mph (i assume your roads are 55-60 mph limits like many of the rural backroads by me)
I also let off a bit when they go to pass me and move to the right when there's a passing zone. Not off the road, but closer to it than the center.

i was involved in 2 accidents for being boxed in like this. gives me so much anxiety more than tail gaters. so I do everything I can in my power to avoid being boxed in and I often found going faster to be a lot safer because I have much more space around me.
I would recommend just going 5 over until you have a way to let them pass you. most of these are probably locals who know the roads really well and find driving 1 hour everyday to be pretty dull.

Too many people are either oblivious or assholes, and you can't fix that, unfortunately. If you are on a stretch that will safely let someone pass, I find gradually slowing down will encourage them to do so. If not, all you can do is focus on the road ahead and make sure to leave plenty of stopping distance between yourself and whatever is in front of you so that you can avoid any potential sudden stops.

Its incredibly reckless of the people tailgating. I've been rear ended a few times and it sucks. It might be the 'safest,' as someone mentioned in the comments, but it can still hurt.
I think slowing down will just enrage the person behind you. When someone is following me too closely, I just try to be extra aware of any sudden stops I might have to make in front of me. Pay attention to any cross streets, if there is a car in front of you, give them an extra bit of space, etc.
If you do end up having to hit the brakes hard, try to judge how hard you are pushing. If you can release a bit then do so. This gives the tailgater a bit more space to stop. If a collision is going to happen, put your head back against your headrest. This will lesson any whiplash.

You'll get used to it. They won't hit you. People who tailgate are making bad decisions in life to begin with, so they probably can't afford getting their car in an accident, even with insurance. There is no way they wouldn't be found liable if they did hit you, so they would get to pay their full deductable, and, odds are, that small amount would render them homeless. LOL

Pup111290@reddit
You can't. Tailgaters are going to tailgate, best thing to do is make it as easy as possible for them to get in front of you so they can be someone else's problem/potential accident. Usually what I do is wait until a passing zone, let off the throttle to slow down slightly, and move as close to the edge of the road as it's safe to do so. That makes it easier and safer for them to pass and allows them to not be your problem anymore.

One idea - one thing I used to do when I would drive slower in the back country (a rare occurrence), if someone approached from behind, if it was safe to do so, I would situate to the right in the lane, then wave the driver behind me to pass (assuming there was a dotted line). If they don't pass, let them suffer behind you.
Understand that deer (as an example) are on the move most often at dawn and at dusk. Also, if you get rear-ended, unless you brake check them, it will never be your fault if you have to make an emergency move or brake suddenly for a hazard.
As you get more experience, the roads you're likely already familiar with, you will not feel so anxious, and you will find yourself driving a bit faster too. That's not all bad. Drive to the conditions, drive to your skill level, and err on the side of defensive driving, and you'll be fine.
