Every year I would give in. Maybe it's not THAT bad? Nope. Burnt.
I love tons of candies just like this, but these are foul. Mary Janes, Squirrel Nut Zipper, Bit O Honey, the Peanut Chew in Philly. But these are wrong.
Fun fact: 300 of those total were made ever in 1917. Due to rationing for WWI they were made of used bubble gum and Grade D peanut Butter. 290 of them are still in circulation today.
I know it’s a very bold statement to make, right out of the gate. I’ve never been good with first impressions. If I knew there was potential for friendship, I would have censored myself better.
There’s even merit to making bite size (albeit a large bite) peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich candy, here. Not sure when it started, but I have a vivid and semi-traumatic memory of biting into an almost dissolved strawberry candy and being absolutely horrified that it was mushy inside. I thought I’d gotten a defect or maybe rotten one, the texture and mouthfeel just threw me. I haven’t been able to enjoy them since.
If these are the ones I'm thinking of these are chocolate and peanut butter taffies. The black is dark chocolate and the orange is peanut butter. They had a funky taste (like a weird artificial chocolate and peanut butter flavoring), but I liked em
I have a friend who hates modern halloween. Saying its the same 8 candies you buy in a big bag at walmart (kinda true) and that he misses the "random candies" like these and a few others. When he told me this I said "You mean the ones I'd throw out every year in favor of name brand candies?"
I used to get Black Taffy as well as these back in the day. And I was a weird kid who loved the taste of black licorice. I haven’t seen those in probably a decade and a half now
See, you have to balance the faves with the ones that are lacking. I would space the lackluster ones between the good stuff, that way I still had some some at the end.
There are very few candies I dislike, but I like some more than others. After about a month all that was left of my Halloween candy was gum, sweet tarts, and smarties.
I only liked the orange ones, and only when I ran out of other candy. I ate them in sadness that my haul has been depleted. The black ones taste like poison, so those got thrown out as soon as I got home.
These bring back fond memories to me, the houses that had these with all the Palmer’s sweets with the festive foil wrappers usually would load you up! After sorting all my candy out that night I would have a nice assortment of Halloween themed candy to go in a dish to snack on.
I wasn't crazy about them as a kid. they were usually one of the last things left in my bucket weeks after halloween (along with the Mary Janes and tootsie rolls). I would eat them thought, when I got desperate enough.
Now as an adult, I'd probably like them a lot more, based on how I remember them tasting. Now I want to try them again to see.
Yeah I never disliked these. They weren't a big joy to find in a trick or treat basket but they're decent for munching. I mean, I'd prefer a fun size crunch bar but these'll do in a pinch ;)
There are only two reasons to buy these I can think of. Either you're a total cheapskate who nonetheless needs to have something to pass out to kids. Or you have some holiday decoration you think might look neat with a bag full of these placed in it or near it.
Whoa are we hating on salt water taffy now? I loved picking out flavors as a kid and yeah will still eat them even though they might now take a tooth with it.
When I was told that “they” were putting drugs in candy I immediately thought of these. So I stayed away. As an adult I wish I would have tried them as no child in my city ever ended up in the hospital due to drugs in candy.
No, but there were other similar but better ones I loved, I think they were some sort of molasses based taffy that came in orange wrappers with little cartoon witches and haunted houses.
Ask kids, we always threw these out thinking, "these would be the ones poisoned or with needles in them". I think I've only tried them once or twice and they were on the lowest teir of halloween treats along with pennies, apples and necco wafers lol
