Great. Increasing chances of a bird flu pandemic in humans while the guy that pooched the last pandemic response might get re-elected probably should have been on my apocalypse bingo card.
Marvelologist@reddit
Trump is the one who got the vaccine ready in 6 months while democrats refused to take it until suddenly they win the election and now it's their vaccine and took it willingly. Yall are mental
WinterDice@reddit
Trump Politicisation of COVID Was a ‘Comorbidity’ in Disappointing US Pandemic Response
Damning analysis of Trump's pandemic response suggested 40% of US COVID-19 deaths could have been avoided
Marvelologist@reddit
Wow echo chamber reports from a guy screaming into the chamber himself. Amazing
WinterDice@reddit
Here's an interest article you might want to skim:
Political party affiliation linked to excess COVID deaths
The gist of it is Republican voters died in greater numbers during the pandemic in general, but the gap widened after vaccines became available. In other words, the Republican party made the vaccine political, and more Republican voters died as a result.
Trump also disbanded the government's unit that was responsible for monitoring and preparing for pandemics, and he did it before the Covid-19 pandemic hit: I ran the White House pandemic office. Trump closed it.
Science and public health shouldn't be political issues.
AgreeableGravy@reddit
u/marvelologist you gunna respond here?
cleaver_username2@reddit (OP)
Every time I want to refute a point on reddit, there is always someone who says it better (and cites sources!). Thanks!
WinterDice@reddit
I’m glad you appreciated the article. It found it both fascinating and extremely sad. So many people lost family because of science denial for political gain by a few.

Project Warp Speed is something that I do 100% give Trump credit for. Knocking down any roadblocks to vaccine production made the Covid vaccine one of the fastest, from inventing to production to output. But as u/WinterDice shows, the whole attitude towards science and vaccines that the GOP and republicans had really hurt the community's trust in the vaccine itself, leading to a lot of uneccesary death.
WinterDice@reddit
Yes, it was fast once he either got out of the way and then took credit or was convinced that it was necessary to get the vaccine rolled out as quickly as possible. He did unbelievable harm otherwise, however, and shouldn’t be given any kind of responsibility again.
cleaver_username2@reddit (OP)
It is literally the only nice thing I can say about him, and he still fucked it up.
WinterDice@reddit
Ha! Very true.
Marvelologist@reddit
Because the government lied when they put the vaccine out. They advertised it as a cure and tried to force people to get it or they lose their lively hood. If they would have told the truth they would have had a better response
cleaver_username2@reddit (OP)
No one claimed it was a cure, that isn't how vaccines work. They prevent future infections, they do not stop current infections or magically make sick people better. And no one claimed that it did.
Marvelologist@reddit
Did it prevent future infection? To the multiple boosted? They said "get the vaccine, save your loved ones" didn't save shit. Kids are dieing all over the country now from heart problems because of the lack of research from the vaccine
Marvelologist@reddit
Nice lies

Hey - I know there’s a lot of fucked up shit in the world, but try and take it a day at the time. The election hasn’t happened yet; this is just one news story, and it’s unclear what will happen next. try and take things slow - take a walk outside, breathe in the fresh air. The sun is going to come up tomorrow and the day after that. As crazy as the world is today, the truth is, the world has always been crazy. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and like you’re at the brink, you should give 988 a call, or reach out to a mental health professional. Odds are that your reaction here is not just about bird flu or politics and there are deeper things for you to contemplate. Good luck. Hang in there.
Trick_Can6678@reddit
its fine bird flu will kill us all anyway
plasticweddingring@reddit
Doubtful. Humanity has survived a lot of shit. But even if what you’re saying is true, why not go out and enjoy the time you have left instead of dooming on Reddit?
minecraftsteve696@reddit
Maybe it this guys case its not that, but i have anhedonia for the forst time ever in ny life for 6 months, and it made me 100% understand why some people dont just do pleasurabke shit instead of dooming. (Anhedonia CAN be a symptom of ocd, schizophrenia and more, NOY JUST DEPRESSION, and can appear ALONE like in my case, most likely from long covid cause nothing else makes any sense to have caused it)
Trick_Can6678@reddit
do you know how deadly this is? 11-35% death rate. extremely deadly. no one will survive this
plasticweddingring@reddit
You’re jumping to conclusions. The world is full of risks - pathogens, extreme weather, war. Try and take things a day at a time. Put the phone down and take a walk outside.
Trick_Can6678@reddit
outside is full of ways to get infected from bird flu when it becomes a pandemic. listen to yourself. 11-35% death rate.
WinterDice@reddit
Don’t do that! There’s so many ways to improve life and get away from this insanity as much as you can. Please get help! The world desperately needs people that recognize how crazy things have become!

Yes, we read this already Dr. Faucci, you can stop reposting your next pandemic scare.
Goofygrrrl@reddit
The timing of this isn’t great. The US is about to hit influenza season and so there exists the possibility of co-infection in a host with seasonal flu and bird flu. This could lead to a reassortment of genetics and traits that would led to a more contagious H5N1. In addition, H5N1 may be able to hide its presence in the typical flu surge and so we may not realize that is spreading in the community
Forsaken_Bison_8623@reddit
We are about to start our 10th wave of covid in the US as well. Horrible timing.

Typical_Elevator6337@reddit
Off topic, but do you mind if I ask if you wear an N95 or better mask at work? I’m so curious to understand healthcare workers who don’t mask at all, which is almost all of the workers that I interact with.
CaramelMeowchiatto@reddit
I work in an outpatient health care facility. You’d be shocked at how many patients will harass the staff for wearing a mask.
Alarming_Skin8710@reddit
I'm sorry I choose life. Add additive measures to protect oneself we would think people are smart about that. Even if it is only a small chance that it made a difference you think people would still be interested in that. I guess some people value their lives more than others.
Typical_Elevator6337@reddit
I hate that. Unfortunately, as someone who also still masks, I am all too familiar with this behavior. I wish the leaders of our healthcare orgs would protect their workers from this behavior.
Goofygrrrl@reddit
I do in fact wear one. I have to buy and bring my own because my hospital only supply surgical masks, which are not strong enough for me. Also, I don’t like the ones that go to the back of my head.
The reason I bring my own are two fold. One, I really don’t want To get Covid again. I’ve had it three times. I had one really nasty bout leading to significant weight loss and GI problems and I’d like never to repeat that. Two, I’ve developed an allergy To the Polyethylene Glycol on the influenza shot. I am Allowed To decline the shot now, with the caveat that I wear a mask at all times.
Honestly being required to wear the mask For Flu makes it easier, from a peer pressure standpoint, to wear it to protect me from Covid.

A Trump presidency resulted in a death total 60% higher on a per capita basis than Canada COVID death toll.
RFK Jr. has said he is Trump’s pick to lead HHS. And we’ve also seen reports that the Affordable Care Act will be scrapped.

Sorry, still not voting for your preferred genocide-funding warmonger.
WinterDice@reddit
Trump? The guy that said Israel should "finish the job" in reference to the Palestinians?
(Just to be clear, he's not my preferred candidate for anything other than a jail sentence.)
quaalude_dispenser@reddit
Not voting for that genocidal warmonger either.
WinterDice@reddit
I understand the warmongering issue. But please consider the impacts to women and girls you know, the economy, the environment and think about voting. And with respect to the subject of this thread, which candidate you think will do a better job helping prevent or minimize the damage from another pandemic.
I hope you have a great day and are doing well.
IrishGoodbye4@reddit
When you say to consider the impacts to women and girls, I assume you mean abortion?
Is there anything a president can do at this point to fix the abortion issue we’ve gotten into? Or is it up to just the states and the Judicial Branch now?
WinterDice@reddit
An example: https://www.propublica.org/article/nevaeh-crain-death-texas-abortion-ban-emtala
WinterDice@reddit
Yes, and access to health care in general. There are lots of reports of women needing emergency care but having it delayed or refused because of a pregnancy, even when the pregnancy isn’t viable and won’t result in a child no matter what happens. It’s horrifying.
As for what can be done, the president appoints federal judges (with senate confirmation) that sit for life without any real, workable checks on their power. Judges from the district courts all the way to the Supreme Court wield enormous power.
A president also has a huge platform and voice to help set the direction for the nation. Administrative agencies create and administer regulations and apply laws in ways that hugely influence our daily lives. Having an admiration that sees women as mere breeding vessels with lesser rights will impact how those agencies do their jobs.
To really improve things (from my viewpoint, at least), on this issue, everyone we elect to state and federal positions needs to be on the same page. Having the house and senate be pro-choice increases the chance of a federal law being passed to reinstate the right to abortion.
Having state governors and legislators act the same way is equally important. The republican strategy right now appears to be having Trump argue that the issue should be left to the states. There are two problems with that. First, I don’t believe or trust Trump or Vance. Second, if it’s left to the states we end up with people like DeSantis abusing the power of their office to intimidate anyone that opposes his views and attempts to limit rights. Second, the senseless patchwork of rights between states will get worse. Anti-choice states are already trying to prosecute women for traveling to another state to get needed healthcare. That could just get worse.
Typical_Elevator6337@reddit
There are women and girls in Gaza as well.
WinterDice@reddit
Very true! I agree that the Gaza situation is completely horrible in every way. We’re unfortunately stuck with these two candidates in the US. Which do you think will be better for women and girls around the world?
Every vote counts, especially in a “lesser of the two evils” selection. I’ll paraphrase here, but remember that all evil needs to win is for good people to do nothing.
Typical_Elevator6337@reddit
Having worked in local, state and federal government and campaigns for the majority of my first 20+ years of adulthood, and having canvassed hardcore for Biden during the last presidential election as the lesser of two evils, my educated perspective now is that divesting from our current electoral system is the only way to ensure life and liberty for as many people as possible. I will vote for local elections, but I will not shore up this violent system by participating in voting for president.
Harris is not the lesser of two evils - she’s just a much better branded version of the same evil. Obviously, Trump’s speech and actions are vile. But her actions and the actions (and notable inaction) of her current administration are just as vile, with a much more comfortable visage aimed at people like me.
Something I think about a lot these days is the concept that for those of us with some privilege, fascism is designed to appeal to us. It will not arrive as dictators. It will arrive as the better option, the choice worth compromising for.
Someone willing to not only subsidize, but let us watch, as our weapons and resources murder tens of thousands of children is not someone worth a vote.
New_pollution1086@reddit

There is also some evidence that several currently available and widely propagated flu vaccines can effectively prevent it

This reuters article failed to mention goats also on the same farm. Don't neglect to test the goats/sheep as well....
World Animal Health Organization Goats: 'The USDA reported the notification (https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/4451) to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), which had a few more details about the findings. The report said the goats at the farm began to kid only days after the poultry, which included chickens and ducks, were depopulated. Ten goats died, which ranged from 5 to 9 days old. Brain and tissue samples from five goat kids were positive f or H5N1, which belonged to clade 2.3.4.4b.'

daviddjg0033@reddit
The only thing our "cousin sub optimistic unite" actually has some good reporting on is medical breakthroughs. Pigs may be less carbon intensive than cow or goat but the literal lakes of pig shit are not. There is just as much lack of regulation on 500,000 bird chicken factories as there are lack of oversight over swine. Bacon is not needed in anyone's diet. Lean ham can be replaced by vegan. I think others in the sub know more about replacing pork with vegetables 🤔
bideto@reddit
More like THE step. The news we've all been dreading.
Mojave0@reddit
I don’t wanna downplay the severity of this in any way but there’s a sort of silver lining to this this was not a factory farm where these pigs were infected it’s a small local farm non-commercial it’s also been put under quarantine however it is only a matter of time before it spreads to the factory farms, where the risk of mutation would be massive
confused_boner@reddit
Not trying to be a doomer but seems like the non-commercial farm would be more likely to work with public health officials. Commercial farms would be worried about profit loss and downtime and would be less likely to test or be willing to work with them

"Just" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, though--according to Rick Bright, "for the U.S. alone, it would take hens laying 900,000 eggs every single day for nine months" to produce enough to vaccinate the population. And of course, by the end of that nine month period, the people who got the vaccine at the beginning of it will have dramatically diminished resistance.
