It won’t sell that well in Australia looking like that. Market here prefers safe designs, but it might sell for mine work.
The arch flares will limit private sales here. You can’t have tyres poking out from flares here, and those flares are a piss take - so anyone wanting to use it off road will buy something else, and there’s plethora of options in the mid size truck with off road pack market. Best selling vehicles here are Ford rangers and Toyota Hilux… this will struggle to compete at the top end, and the cheap end how has cheap Chinese trucks.
They’ve named it Tasman to appeal to the Australian market too.
I love it. It reminds me of the Jeep Gladiator, another truck people hate on. I love that they look different. I love the boxy look. I didn't look for a price so I don't know what they plan on selling this for, but since it's a Kia I expect it'll be cheaper than competition. This would be perfect for me as I don't usually need anything bigger than my station wagon, but every couple of months I find having a pickup would be REALLY handy
I don't like it, but I have faith they can drastically improve it with few changes in the next iteration. There's some cool stuff about the design, but the front is just ... Awkward.
I think it looks cool, way more exciting than any of the basic American trucks. The Ram and the F150 are so boring to look at. You're right about the personality part
If the logo was moved down into the grille it would look better and is the design flaw. If you picture a "ram" or ram crosshair grille in the grill slot it would make a better ram than a ram. If you picture a ford blue oval in the grille it would look look better than a ranger. The same as a GMC. So maybe it's not the design and simply logo bias drilled in everyone's heads due to poor logo placement.
Yea if the logo was in the grille it would be in line with the cladding wheel arcs and create subconscious belt around the truck. Then where the logo is placed right now would be this cool air flow hood angle. I honestly think kia's new logo looks cheap and there's no way to place it right and hurts their design.
Literally just heard this inside my head in Cory Hearts voice thanks. On another note, since it's not coming to the US, would it be possible to buy it overseas and import it here? And what would that cost curious. Obviously I could never afford that lol. But a guy can dream and if I ever hit the lottery I guess...
But when youu drive with your windows down, every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, ‘Dear God, what is that thing?’ will echo in your perfect ~~ears~~ interior
I think about this every time I’m stuck behind someone cruising the left lane in a 1st gen Prius/Yaris. It’s one thing to be stuck behind a car in the left lane, it’s another thing for it to be an ugly car. Meanwhile the driver is just obliviously living in lala land.
That’s how 1st gen Prius or Yaris (Echo) drivers feel about Nissan Jukes or Pontiac Azteks. There’s always an uglier car. Honestly, I drive a 3rd gen Tacoma and thought it was pretty ugly for the first 5 or 6 years. Now I just don’t care. The view out the windshield is just fine.
If the logo was moved down into the grille it would look better and is the design flaw. If you picture a "ram" or ram crosshair grille in the grill slot it would make a better ram than a ram. If you picture a ford blue oval in the grille it would look look better than a ranger. The same as a GMC. OMG I was literally thinking about the purple FJ inside my head when I saw this one. A combination between the FJ and that new GMC Hummer wouldn't you agree?
Not sold in the US, thanks Hyundai\KIA.... I mean, it's butt ugly so whatever, but we need more small\cheap pickups in the US so I'm a tad disappointed.
I refuse to buy a Maverick anymore because Ford has been super shady. From hiking the price up to dealer markups and selling spoken for vehicles, no thanks.
Chicken tax aside, both of those models are too small to compete with the Maverick/SC. The Ram Rampage, which replaces the Ram 1000, is more in line size-wise.
Agreed! It'll probably never happen though because a majority of US buyers purchase way more vehicle than they need. Why would manufacturers even bother when we're buying dumb loaded up $80k+ pickups to drive the kids to school and haul a 2x4 once a year... It's partially our own fault.
I do hope that the industry reverses some though. IMO it's just not maintainable which in this tight economy I think is starting to show. Trucks are starting to sit according to the reports I've seen.
It's also how Ford got around importing the transit connect panel vans. They had shitty seats bolted into the cargo floor, so they qualified as passenger vehicles and thus immune to the chicken tax. The seats were removed at the port.
Right, but that workaround was killed by US Customs over 5 years ago. It's part of the reason Ford no longer sells the Polish-built TC here, or Ram the ProMaster City (imported Fiat).
I'm sure K&H just didn't make their first foray into the 'truck' market with a 2.5T engine that's already compliant in the USA (Sorento, Santa Fe), without thinking of selling it in the USA, possibly the biggest truck market.
It's a bit odd that they currently don't have plans for North America, considering the Hyundai Santa Cruz is sold here, although that's not a body on frame truck like this. Maybe they feel Americans will scoff at a Kia truck.
It makes sense to me. If North America was the first launch market, that's a big uphill battle (initially). It would be a huge roll of the dice as to acceptance.
Initially it seems they are pressing utility, not the "King Ranch", "Harley Davidson" edition route. Probably a good call.
But Hyundai/Kia have US manufacturing so chicken tax doesn’t have to be an issue. And they have done well in almost every category they compete in here. So maybe we will see them. On the other hand I don’t know how big the midsize truck market is here, locally Tacoma and to a lesser extent Colorado are doing well, but I rarely see “new” Rangers (ie post-2012) and the same with the new Frontier. Ridgeline and Gladiator has their own niches but not the same category in my opinion.
I pre-ordered and got screwed out of a first year Maverick by a shady dealer. I didn't really "need" a truck except to do hardware store hauls and such so I didn't really need it to be a daily.
I eventually ended up finding something much better. A 1983 Ford Ranger with extended cab and a 2.2L diesel (factory). Mechanically minty, Maaco paint job, yet hardly any rust for $5k. This thing is so much fun to tinker with and restore that I'm glad I didn't get the Maverick.
If anyone would just bring a small cheap truck back to the US it'd fly off lots. Screw the chicken tax and EPA for making that an impossibility.
Ugh, yeah I got screwed 3 times by different dealers. A few sold from under me and one tried to tack on a $5k markup when I showed up to pick the truck up. I walked away.
I ordered a 24 from a 4th dealer and as it was in production decided I didn't even want a Mav anymore. I didn't want to support a company that was getting kind of greedy with raising the price and does nothing about their shady dealers.
Glad your Ranger worked out, those are super cool, especially the diesel variant! If you just need it for running around locally and odd jobs, that's perfect.
ehhhhhhhhhhh ford definitely been making some shady moves... just not at a level most consumers are paying attention to. You're right to say these are shady moves that they pointed out from the dealership level. They actually hammered down on the dealerships during the pandemic, not nearly hard enough but some dealerships definitely got some funding removed and deliveries of special vehicles taken away.
But ford has been quietly building an insurance company, which same with GM and that should alarm you. GM is all but forcing you to get onstar, why this matters is that collects your driving data, which sure just affects your insurance... but look at the patents that ford has been pushing through. A camera system that hints to sending your information to law enforcement, also likely directly to your insurance, not only that but it also hints at being a rolling redlight, speed and other various traffic infraction camera for everyone around you and you. Again all this going directly to law enforcement / insurance. While there are definitely some instances where this is a good thing, who knows where this is going to go. IMO it just looks shady AF when you own a car company and then you start going into insurance for said vehicles, especially with how shady american insurance is in general.
I guess shady may be the wrong word for Ford themselves.
I just don't agree with the fact they've raised the price of the Mav while taking away features year after year. They're still really neat trucks but hardly an affordable truck now for what underneath is a budget built truck.
The Ford dealer network though is horrendous to deal with. My 4th try I finally got one in 2024 and walked away after it arrived. It was almost $3K more than my first one in 2022 while missing features I really wanted like a sliding rear window which just didn't sit well with me.
Anyways, neat trucks, questionable value now, and shitty dealers :)
The reason why the old Honda Ridgeline was a complete failure in Europe, along with not offering it with a diesel option when a random VW minivan is rated higher towing capacity.
Probably only in selected markets. US pickups still had a decent marketshare here in Norway around that time. They were your only option if you wanted some resemblance of comfort in your pickup after all back then.
A lot of global mid-sizers have a payload around 1 metric ton/2200 lbs. or more. Their American counterparts have softer springs for a better ride at the cost of payload.
Which is why I always laugh about the payload police when towing that pretend that swapping springs / add a spring etc because you're 300lb over your 1300lb payload on a loaded 1/2 ton isn't going to be perfectly fine.
I don’t hate it, and I continue to applaud Kia for at the very least trying something new in their aesthetic designs.
One odd thing that really tickles my fancy. The back seat when it folds up it just lifts up. I used to have a Tacoma and the weird way the seats dropped down by tiling the back seat forward and laying down the back of it on top never quite worked well.
I think most crew cabs these days just have the seat cushion fold up. I remember in some older models the rear seat cushion would fold completely forward, then the seat back would also fold down, making a flat load floor.
I honestly like the way it looks. It’s a truck and so the design is going to look functional utilitarian. I will say that it also looks weirdly retro yet I can’t pinpoint on what vehicle the Tasman reminds me of.
I want you to picture a very basic truck silhouette, like the "Who's that Pokemon?" meme. Got it? Ok now we turn the lights on and... BAM everything is weird and dumb and in places they're not supposed to be! See how your expectations were completely subverted??
Honestly kinda dig it. Love quirky looking vehicles, and it fits the bill. And it's NOT an EV, which is ALWAYS a plus in my book! Glad they didn't just try to rebadge a Hyundai SantaCruz a little and call it a day...
Side note: they mention it will also come in a chassis cab format, and I LAUGH at the idea of THAT with a cargo box upfit or something similar XD
It looks goofy but it stands out. Trucks are an insanely difficult market to break into. The Cybertruck looks dumb as hell and it tried to be different.
Those arch flares are taking some serious piss. What the fuck… they’re going to be hard to sell in Australia, the Chinese utes are less offensive to look at and likely cheaper.
Am I confused, or is that turbodiesel engine incredibly unimpressive? Only 0.3L less capacity than the petrol engine, and only fourteen more lbs torque?! Weren't Euro turbodiesels making >25% more torque than their petrol versions 20 years ago?! What am I missing?
I almost wish it was uglier. Then it could be a true meme vehicle, but it's mostly good with a few standout hideous elements, so it looks like it takes itself seriously.
Not a huge fan of the looks of this but I think most vehicles these days are either bland copies of the other or in the case of most trucks an ugly box on wheels
That is quite possibly the ugliest production vehicle I have ever seen.
This may the the one time in history I will ever be thankful for the Chicken Tax, as it will prevent me from having this thing assault my eyes on US roadways.
I like the styling. It looks very rugged. I only wish the headlights were horizontal rather than vertical.
Also, this truck is being offered with a manual, albeit paired only with the diesel motor. The only other trucks available with a manual at all are the Tacoma and Gladiator. The payload/towing capacity seems really great for a half-ton as well. The X-Pro trim offers an eLSD too which makes it very attractive for off-roading. Pretty disappointed that there no plans for this to come stateside yet.
Holy abomination. One can only hope that this atrocity wont be sold in their market and that they wont be burdened with having to endure seeing this thing with their own eyes.
Boy, if only there were things like a tailgate that dropped down, or a bed extender that attached to your hitch, or a ladder rack, or a trailer, or literally any of the dozens of products already available to make your bed longer for the rare times you need it! It's a shame no such product exists.
Go look at any parking lot or road near you, and tell me how many pickup trucks you see there with material in the bed that requires a 6 or 8 foot bed.
I'm gonna have to see this one for real. A lot of Kia models look dorky in photos but in person they're better. Hopefully this is one of those situations.

The reason why the old Honda Ridgeline was a complete failure in Europe, along with not offering it with a diesel option when a random VW minivan is rated higher towing capacity.
Drzhivago138@reddit
TIL that the Honda Ridgeline was ever offered in Europe.
xolov@reddit
Probably only in selected markets. US pickups still had a decent marketshare here in Norway around that time. They were your only option if you wanted some resemblance of comfort in your pickup after all back then.
Drzhivago138@reddit
A lot of global mid-sizers have a payload around 1 metric ton/2200 lbs. or more. Their American counterparts have softer springs for a better ride at the cost of payload.
caverunner17@reddit
Which is why I always laugh about the payload police when towing that pretend that swapping springs / add a spring etc because you're 300lb over your 1300lb payload on a loaded 1/2 ton isn't going to be perfectly fine.
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit
It's all about the axles. Springs matter a little but on the same axles you're still limited
MortimerDongle@reddit
Didn't realize that, but it makes sense.
Mend1cant@reddit
I don’t hate it, and I continue to applaud Kia for at the very least trying something new in their aesthetic designs.
One odd thing that really tickles my fancy. The back seat when it folds up it just lifts up. I used to have a Tacoma and the weird way the seats dropped down by tiling the back seat forward and laying down the back of it on top never quite worked well.
Drzhivago138@reddit
I think most crew cabs these days just have the seat cushion fold up. I remember in some older models the rear seat cushion would fold completely forward, then the seat back would also fold down, making a flat load floor.

Drzhivago138@reddit
Is the electric $120K model in the room with us?
Manginaz@reddit
Why does it have eyebrows over the wheels? 🤢
FenrirSlip@reddit
I honestly like the way it looks. It’s a truck and so the design is going to look functional utilitarian. I will say that it also looks weirdly retro yet I can’t pinpoint on what vehicle the Tasman reminds me of.

It's like where you think the headlights should be they just... Aren't.
And then someone chopped off a piece of fender and made that the headlight because why not?
Fermented_foreskin88@reddit
...the new Toyota Landcruiser at home:
I think they tried to copy that square retro look of the new Landcruiser but failed miserably.
muduke@reddit
I want you to picture a very basic truck silhouette, like the "Who's that Pokemon?" meme. Got it? Ok now we turn the lights on and... BAM everything is weird and dumb and in places they're not supposed to be! See how your expectations were completely subverted??
DriverDenali@reddit
I was just thinking about forest roads with those lights i can see them getting damaged

We need it to be unique, so we're gonna move the headlights....
To the fenders!
Fenders aren't the place most prone to being hit by stuff are they?
Vandrel@reddit
I mean, have you seen basically every other modern truck?
LargeWeinerDog@reddit
Aside from the weird plastic above the fenders, I actually kinda like how it looks.
BeefStrokinOff@reddit
same. Well and maybe the headlights.
MrBluSky717@reddit
Honestly kinda dig it. Love quirky looking vehicles, and it fits the bill. And it's NOT an EV, which is ALWAYS a plus in my book! Glad they didn't just try to rebadge a Hyundai SantaCruz a little and call it a day...
Side note: they mention it will also come in a chassis cab format, and I LAUGH at the idea of THAT with a cargo box upfit or something similar XD

Don’t like the front end but that gray single cab model looks pretty cool tbh. I’d love a small single cab truck.

That single cab does look much nicer. Maybe partly because it has a different bed without those rear plastic bits

AnnoyingRingtone@reddit
I like the styling. It looks very rugged. I only wish the headlights were horizontal rather than vertical.
Also, this truck is being offered with a manual, albeit paired only with the diesel motor. The only other trucks available with a manual at all are the Tacoma and Gladiator. The payload/towing capacity seems really great for a half-ton as well. The X-Pro trim offers an eLSD too which makes it very attractive for off-roading. Pretty disappointed that there no plans for this to come stateside yet.
