90’s fashion is back almost overnight

Seemed a long time we were terrorized by skinny jeans, man bun turds and giant holes in the ears.
Then suddenly as if overnight the 90’s is back, replicated to THE LETTER all the way down to the doc Martian’s and whale tails.
Actually not complaining. In fact all I got to say is: it’s about time 😂
greenblue_md@reddit
What’s mind blowing about that is that it was THIRTY YEARS AGO.
Ricekake33@reddit
😭
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
Agreed. Please make it stop 🤣
BohemiaDrinker@reddit
Yeah, it took WAY TOO LONG.
I'm so glad I can buy properly sized pants and tsirts again.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
As in 10 sizes too large?
later 90s/early 00s was so baggy and ill fitting.
BohemiaDrinker@reddit
As it should be.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
if you say so....
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
BohemiaDrinker@reddit
I do. Look at those smiles. You only smile like that if you're wearing REALLY comfortable clothes.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
Look at the 80s smiles all over! Upbeat city!
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
its_raining_scotch@reddit
All my high school band shirts were extra large. I still have them all and want to wear them but I just can’t do extra large now, it feels so ill-fitting to me now. Which is hilarious because I’m like 30lbs heavier now than when I was wearing them back in the 90’s.
thumbtaxx@reddit
I put giant holes in my ears in the 90s. It started then... I sure never thought I'd see it take off....
RidiculousDear@reddit
I’ve never stopped wearing skinny jeans.
mythofinadequecy@reddit
They’re kinda a thing
tallCircle1362@reddit
I got used to skin tight jeans in the 80’s and can’t wear anything else. Loose ones feel like they are falling off 😂
someone_sometwo@reddit
I have my huge cargo shorts!!
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
ugh
how about the 80s for once, 90s have had too many chances as it is
viewering@reddit
they have been emulating the 80s for years
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
I can't say I've seen it much. Maybe jeans jackets in a few times, a couple months one summer in the early 10s had a lot of color but what else? Hair still is flat and zero volume for decades now. Etc. Mostly feels like endless retreads of end 90s and 00s (which were mostly based on old, pre-80s stuff).
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
I mean all that skinny jeans crap was more or less the 80s wasn’t it? They did us the courtesy of skipping acid wash , though. That was nice. Also no wall hair with a mountain of hair spray. That was also very merciful.
Although I’ve seen the return of the mullet. That just cracks me up.

No not at all, the whole hipster skinny jean thing was NOT 80s at all. 80s was just normal jeans, normal fitting, maybe tight on girls at times but normal jeans and regular on guys.
And we sure could use some more styled up hair for once, I mean it's like we are stuck in the past for decades now with zero style, dull, flat late 60s/early 70s hippies hair or early 1800s pioneer woman zero style flat hair.
And what is wrong with acid wash?
But then, go figure, the mullet is the thing that comes back....
PlantStalker18@reddit
Definitely not. 80s jeans were straight leg, no stretch, and we wore them with the cuffs rolled.
slippycaff@reddit
I can’t do skinny eyebrows again.
atomic_chippie@reddit
Why didn't someone tell us they'd never grow back?? 😭
BringBackHUAC@reddit
My friends aunt warned us in high school, she had plucked hers ONCE in the 60's and they never came back! We were scared after that, by that point her aunts eyebrows were purely penciled in.
PuzzleheadedSpare576@reddit
My momma told me
BigRefrigerator9783@reddit
My mom warned me...I DIDN'T LISTEN 😭
jolly_bien-@reddit
My granny warned me. She’d plucked hers thin as a teen in the 40s. She said this “thick brows will ALWAYS come back and the thin is short lived but they won’t grow back”. It was the one time I listened to an elder. SO thankful omg
IllustriousPickle657@reddit
I'm relieved. My eyebrows are naturally very thin and arched lol
thatgenxguy78666@reddit
I never understood plucking eyebrows to a thin line and then drawing it back on.
emilythequeen1@reddit
I got to be told how “bushy” and overgrown, unkept and ugly my eyebrows were all through the 90’s. I’ll just stay ugly over here-with eyebrows intact.
thatgenxguy78666@reddit
I remember seeing a young Brooke Shields and thinking those eyebrows were beautiful! I think they are called powerbrows. But perhaps I made that up long ago.
emilythequeen1@reddit
Nope you were right!
RunRunRabbitRunovich@reddit
It’s ok mine are permanently skinny from a waxing disaster in the 90s 😣
emilythequeen1@reddit
Right? They’re fucking ugly.
hollyock@reddit
I can bc mine never grew back
MezcalCC@reddit
It would be great, IMO, if all women abandoned eyebrow plucking altogether.
Tricksey4172@reddit
Apparently you don’t have moles yet. Bless your heart. Lol
violet715@reddit
I can, because mine never really grew back.
Master-Reference-775@reddit
Oof. Same. My eyebrows never recovered. 😩🤣
InsensitiveCunt30@reddit
That was a bad trend, totally agree
Haiku-d-etat@reddit
Y'all let me know when corduroy pants come back. I miss those comfortable mfkas.
deltronethirty@reddit
I found some North Face elastic waist brown cords. Marked down from $109 to $20 at REI sidewalk sale.
Haiku-d-etat@reddit
"we got espers that let us bless with fresh shit" Deltron
ReadingAfraid5539@reddit
I wear them everyday
cinnysuelou@reddit
I bought 3 pairs at JC Penney last month. They’re great!
IllustriousPickle657@reddit
Ugh. Hated the "swish, swish, swish" sound every time I took a step from the corduroy rubbing between my thighs. I was never skinny enough to have a thigh gap.
EuphoricTemperature9@reddit
At our age, why are you waiting. If you wanna wear em, wear em. I'll bust mine out too with a sweater vest and a blue tshirt under
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
I had a girlfriend in 1997 who wore those. I thought she looked hot.
its_raining_scotch@reddit
Me too! I still have a Pavlovian response when I see and feel corduroy. It reminds me of feeling their legs.
Whysomanypineapples@reddit
Boyfriend with wallet chain and airwalks, is that you??
Haiku-d-etat@reddit
Nah, chain wallet and Vans here 😂
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
It’s me!!!! 😻
LionelHutz2018@reddit
Just bought some wide leg cords from J.Crew. So comfy and cute!
xXazorXx@reddit
I just bought a pair from the Gap. I’m so excited
RecordingLeft6666@reddit
The corduroys are back! I shopped at Costco this weekend and bought two pairs for my teen daughter!
atomic_chippie@reddit
Shoot, go down to Old Navy and get some! They're hella comfortable and you get to swish swish like we were 12 again.
Sensitive-Question42@reddit
Not really overnight. It’s been at least a year or more already since 90s fashion has been back in.
Turdulator@reddit
lol, when you are 45 years old, a year feels like overnight when it comes to stuff like fashion
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s been most of this year as far as I can see.
All I can say is I don’t remember it this time last year. I did see one person rocking wide leg jeans that were kinda low rise every now and then but I thought maybe they were outliers. It wasn’t until this year that I noticed absolutely everyone wearing them.
Coconut-bird@reddit
I work at college and about a year ago I looked around and realized everyone looked like I did in my 20s. Even down to the boys haircuts. It was a bit disconcerting. But I was really happy to swap out the skinny jeans for some vintage 501s.
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
Right?? Once I get over feeling like I’m in the twilight zone I’ll be happy 😊
Str8tup_catlady@reddit
It’s been happening for ab 3 years here in CA
FaithlessnessPlus164@reddit
Was gonna say, this has been brewing for a good 18 months or 2 years now, where has OP been living!? 😂
JoeMagnifico@reddit
My Doc's from the early 90s are still standing....but pro-tip, if you are buying new boots/shoes, go with Solovair ...as Doc quality has gone to shit over the last two decades.
Turdulator@reddit
I still have my Timbs from the 90s…. A lil stained and the laces a bit frayed, but otherwise still in great condition.
KNT-cepion@reddit
Doc quality is just so bad now. I got a vintage pair made with the most amazing leather but good luck buying new ones like that. Damn shame.
AnarchiaKapitany@reddit
Most new ones are made with "vegan leather" which tells a tale itself
HermioneMarch@reddit
Harlow and Lloyds make all kinds of patterns. I get asked all the time if they are docs
IAm5toned@reddit
timberland, red wing, and irish setter have all gone to shit as well.
gatoenvestido@reddit
Yup. Switched to danner after being a redwing guy my whole life.
neanderthalensis@reddit
Solovairs aren’t bulletproof either. They have an issue with delaminating. Better than Docs though.
its_raining_scotch@reddit
My 14 eye steel toes that I got in 1994 are in perfect shape. The issue now is finding situations to actually wear them now.
RKsu99@reddit
I’m glad Doc’s are back (this is news to me!) I have at least a couple of nice pairs buried somewhere in storage.
BlondeFlowers@reddit
They haven't been made in the UK in ages which is probably the reason
JoeMagnifico@reddit
That's exactly the reason.
fiascokittens@reddit
Well shit, I wish this comment was last Friday. I ordered a pair.
_weasel_@reddit
Any idea if the Solovair are decent in snow and ice? They look great, I hadn’t heard of them before so thanks for the info. But I’m curious how they operate in winter weather.
Ok-Kick4060@reddit
If you’re spending $250+ for lace-up boots, get the still-made-in-UK Docs. (Regular Doc Martens are now made in China, and yes they are crap) https://www.drmartens.com/us/en/unisex/made-in-england/c/04310000
Baggismeg@reddit
Oh man! This is good to hear. I can only wear Docs for work but they are rubbish and last few pairs worn out far too quickly. I was thinking of Solovair. Are they just as comfortable?
Quackoverride@reddit
I love my Solovairs. Wear them everywhere. My last pair of Docs lasted two years. These will be kicking for at least a decade.
italicizedspace@reddit
So true. The kiddos are looking for vintage ones.
irate_alien@reddit

Xistential0ne@reddit
I’m not down with man buns or whale tails. Everything else, eh whatever. We rocked docs in the early 80’s btw.
KurtAZ_7576@reddit
Some of us were still wearing them in the 90s...mostly because the 80s Docs actually lasted until the mid-90s. The one thing I can't get on board with is Birkenstocks. I have been seeing those around again.
dj3po1@reddit
Yeah, docs were not 90s. Maybe mainstream, but that goes against the whole “alternative/punk” aesthetic. I started wearing them in the mid 80s stopped wearing them by 90/91.
InsensitiveCunt30@reddit
For sure no man buns! I had to look up whale tail 😂😂
KurtAZ_7576@reddit
I mean...my closet is perpetually in the 90s so....
Prestigious-Rice-735@reddit

skinnysteeltubes@reddit

tallCircle1362@reddit
My favorite 80’s fashions=Gunne Sax and IZOD shirts 😃
HGFantomas@reddit
good thing I never stopped wearing my Kmart flannel shirts, 501s and Sk8-Hi's.
Nutsack_Adams@reddit
See to me ultimate style is a metal shirt such as Metallica ride the lightning/metal up your ass, 501s, and Jordan 1 high tops. You can tell what era my style is from.
HGFantomas@reddit
I did have some OG Jordan 1s (the black and blue ones). Always wanted the ride the lightning or Master of puppets shirt but never did.
Nutsack_Adams@reddit
I never got any of that shit either, that’s why I buy it now that I can afford it. I had Avia shoes from big 5 and thrift store clothes
OctopusParrot@reddit
I was just saying to my wife yesterday that an unbuttoned flannel shirt over a band t-shirt, worn out jeans and converse all stars was a uniform I could be pretty comfortable wearing all the time. She said "give it time, it will come back into fashion." And here we are. Sadly all of my old concert t-shirts are long gone.
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)

Gibson Guitars just re-released a guitar from the 80s, too. It's been a revival for a decade now, and we're transitioning back into the 90s.

It shouldn’t be a surprise right? They’ve been recycling movies for 20 years why not style?
zoeyversustheraccoon@reddit

thatgenxguy78666@reddit
Its been popping for a while now. Mostly JNCO inspired. But get this..the kids are into y2k era fashion as well.

ShowSame1659@reddit
Can confirm, I bought a pair in dark blue of which the coated leather has a plastic feeling to it. It cracks, no matter how good you take care of them. And I've followed instructions from Dr. Martens and bought their stuff as well. I regret buying them. Should've bought the normal black leather ones

newnewnew_account@reddit
I honestly thought whale tails were more early 2000s as they went with low cut jeans and thongs. And also tramp stamps. I don't remember any of those things being a thing in the '90s

Dismal-Course-8281@reddit
They'll be some people who wear them for the rest of their lives. Just like I'll always wear the loose fitting ones no matter what is popular.
The-Rev@reddit

violet715@reddit

I just wore my old heavy cotton flannel shirt from 1991 with a WFNX t shirt. My theory is that if you wore it the first time around, you’re too old to look on-trend wearing it the second time around. But I’m also too old to care, which is nice 😅
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
lol I was wondering the exact same thing. Like the kids are gonna say “look at that old guy wearing that flannel shirt like he’s all trendy!”

Ive been seeing hints of the 70s coming back. Bell bottoms and 'groovy' patterns.
Interesting-Earth508@reddit (OP)
Right. But the thing is the 90s was essentially a revival of the 70s 🤣
Temporary_Shirt_6236@reddit
Well considering it was 80s retro fashion that was all rage for quite a while, I'm entirely unsurprised that the 90s is teed up next. Now I'm just waiting for my 13 year old nephew to excitedly ask me if I've ever heard of Soundgarden.

I saw a very 90s mustard yellow at Urban Outfitters that supports this. Remember Tweeds? Big pants, big skirts, big jumpers - that decade was the last time there was enough prosperity for generous amounts of fabric of the sorts that are now seldom found (wool, silk, even cotton) to be used in affordable ready-to-wear fashion. Oh, halcyon days of yore.. it's a recycled polyester world now.
oracleofnonsense@reddit
I only buy vintage wool sweaters for this reason. 100% wool - 100% warm.

There is a pretty distinct nostalgia cycle that seems to revolve around when people in their late 30s-40s came of age. The 90s were due to come back.

I'm literally still wearing docs, Levi 501s and t shirts with an open shirt over the top lol
urban_shoe_myth@reddit
I was in urban outfitters with my daughter earlier this year and they had the exact jeans I had in the late 90s. Same brand, same design, literally the same jeans. Also the exact same combat pants, I had 2 pairs of those, black and pastel pink. Think they were early 2000s tho.
Blew my mind that the random clothing items I bought 25 years ago are now on sale again. And at a premium price, the jeans were about £100, I can't imagine that I'd have paid more than about £30 for them new. And the combats, can't remember the store price but are going for £85 on depop.
All the stuff I've donated over the years. Damn. BUT I did the same with my mum when 70s stuff came back in the 90s, she would look at my magazines and say oooh I had one just like that, and I'd be gutted because she'd done the same, donated or binned it.
