[Sun Column] Jeremy Clarkson: “My new job is not dying”
Posted by FlipStig1@reddit | thegrandtour | View on Reddit | 149 comments
It appears that Jeremy Clarkson got scared straight after his health incident, and he decided to make a few life changes after that event. Here’s the part of his column that stood out for me:
“I’m now 64 and last week, when the Grim Reaper poked his nose round the door, I decided that actually, I quite fancied living a little bit longer.
“I want to see my grandchildren grow up. I saw the dawn this morning and it was magnificent, so I’d quite like to see a few more of those too. Also, I still want to visit the Galapagos Islands.
“To achieve all this, I must live on water and steamed fish, and exercise.”
Boundish91@reddit
It's good that he's woken up. But it's sad that it took a near brush with death.
NoInsect5709@reddit
Yeah I love him, but in one for the road it was a little painful to see just how out of shape he was. Hope he turns it around, guy is a treasure.
CurnanBarbarian@reddit
It's been really interesting seeing him evolve over the last decade or so. I absolutely love Clarksons Farm, it was very eye opening
RedManMatt11@reddit
To be honest, I thought working his farm would have gotten him into better shape but I guess it’s a little naive to think he’s truly “working” the farm like many day-to-day farmhands do
Skysflies@reddit
You can do all the farm work you like if you're downing bottle after bottle of wine on an evening
Hatarus547@reddit
i have an uncle who works on a sheep farm, Fattest man you've ever seen, Dinner there is practically a feast since they are serving the farmhands too, the man drinks and smokes as well long gone are the days of the fit farmer
pathfinderoursaviour@reddit
Also the body will eventually normalise that excercise so it will stop having an effect on the body
It’s like the gym, you need to keep adding more weight when your current weight gets too comfortable otherwise your not going to make any more progress
70stang@reddit
This is why the Rock now benches 4700 lbs just to stay in the same shape
heilhortler420@reddit
And because he's in his 50's on the best mexican supplements money can buy
Bwunt@reddit
Farm work this days isn't really what it was 50 or even nore years ago. It's still quite physical, but it won't necessarily replace the needed excercise.
I mean, look at Kaleb or Gerald from Clarkson's farm. Both of them work quite physically (Kaleb is a farmhand, Gerald is a dry-stone wall specialist) and both are quite chubby.
locutus92@reddit
I think it's probably too much beer TBH.
NoInsect5709@reddit
I agree, though I heard the Hawkstone is pretty damn good, so I don’t necessarily blame him lol.
tosss@reddit
I think the last GT episode was filmed before the last Farm season, and I think he looked a little better in the most recent Farm.
NoInsect5709@reddit
I was wondering about the timeline re S3 of CF and the finale of GT. I agree, while he obviously wasn't in great shape, he looked notably better in S3 of CF.
Snowbold@reddit
If you pay attention in S3, they have two times they mentioned that he left for filming the Grand Tour. So both final GT specials occurred during Clarkson’s Farm season 3, but the farm ended filming after One for the Road.
KnightsOfCidona@reddit
Yeah Clarkson's Farm always ends in July/August with the harvest, One for the Road was filmed in September 2023. Sandjob was in April/May 2023 - Clarkson mentions Gordon Lightfoot dying - he died 1 May 2023
Jeffro_Shogun@reddit
Yeah, you can tell he has never done much physical exercise. His legs pretty thin and simple movements look awkward or painful for him. I thought the farm work would put some muscle on him and make him more mobile. I really enjoy the shows he does, but hard to watch sometimes.
Gr1msh33per@reddit
I doubt he works full farmer hours. It's all staged for the camera.
ilic_mls@reddit
A lot of people think they are indestructible until they learn they aren’t. Sure, it would have been better if he started eating well and drinking less but hey… better now than never
syringistic@reddit
Yeah. My mindset from my mid 20s, of "I can abuse my body and recover the next day", disappeared in the last few years. A heavy night of drinking is now 3-5 days of pain afterwards.
ilic_mls@reddit
Its why i seldom drink anymore. When i was younger, i would go train, and say “fuck warm up”. Now if i dont warm up…
ueaueauaeueau@reddit
Nah hopefully he dies soon.
Boundish91@reddit
What's wrong with you?
ueaueauaeueau@reddit
Nothing, guy is a massive POS and the world is better off without him. You want him alive because he entertains you....
Boundish91@reddit
What's he done to you that you want him dead? He's no angel, but still.
Be shouty on TV and divisive on purpose is hardly anything serious enough to warrant death?
ueaueauaeueau@reddit
Trump hasn't done anything to me personally but I want him dead ASAP, so that argument doesn't mean anything.
Aside from assaulting someone, basically all of the opinions that come out of his mouth when they aren't entertainment are garbage and it's the kind of stuff that regresses the country. The country is becoming more of a joke for several decades and it's exactly his kind of politics that led to that. I think anyone who voted for the Conservatives is OK with people dying (how many died by the hands of the DWP in the past 14 years?) so why should I care if he lives or not?
52nd_and_Broadway@reddit
…Jezza, there’s some bad news about being an overweight man in his mid 60s. You should’ve stopped drinking and smoking 30 years ago.
syringistic@reddit
This is very true. I'm 38, and have been a heavy drinker and smoker since 15. Every time I am in the hospital for alcohol -related incidents, the doctors always make it clear to me that I have just a few years left before it's too late for me to recover. I have maybe a year or two before irreparable liver damage.
And I already feel it. Anxiety, back pain, leg problems, hand problems... If I keep this up until I'm 45, I'm as good as dead.
BananaPalmer@reddit
Better late than never. Sure some damage can't be undone, but he can at least improve the quality of his remaining time, and reverse some damage by improving his health.
ProfessionalTiger0@reddit
It takes tragedy for most people to change behavior
kaijumoviefan@reddit
Unfortunately, that's what it usually takes for some people.
Pitchslap@reddit
He’s a pretty typical it can’t happen to anyone until it happens to him guy so I’m not shocked
Flybuys@reddit
It usually takes a close call to make people realise things.
thepandaken@reddit
Love this:
"But it’s going to be my eleventh job. Not dying. Of course, there will be those who say I should have started on this new career path earlier.
They have a point, except for one thing.
If you want to avoid spending the last few years of your life in a festival of boredom and denial, you must start the festival when you’re about 32.
And I can’t see the point of that. Living a long life of misery to avoid a short bit of misery at the end.
My recommendation then is to keep your foot hard down until you run out of fuel. And that’s when you buy the Tesla Lib Dem lifestyle."
Give the man a US Passport already!
Meior@reddit
I'm sorry but this is stupid.
Misery? You don't have to live on steamed fish and water from 32. There is something in between, what many might call a normal life where you don't overdo the bad stuff but still get to enjoy it.
passcork@reddit
Also, a lot of types of excersice aren a lot of fun.
Beahner@reddit
And I’m guessing based on following the guy for a few decades, but I think he knows that moderation over life is best. Saying that could be helpful, but he has always had a stubborn streak that strays from helpful at points like this.
And he’s staying true to form now as he winches about it all.
jazzymusicvibes@reddit
good to hear he’s still Jezza

somebodyelse22@reddit
Jezza: our treasure :)
jlruss@reddit
I’m no paragon of health myself, but his lifestyle has definitely closed many doors in terms of experience already. Truly wish him and his the best of health. We all live with our choices but his language is paper thin here. As would be mine given my own choices.
pm_me_petpics_pls@reddit
Yeah this thought process of "you can't have any drink or good food" if you want to be healthy is always quite a bit off.
It's more that if you don't moderate it for most of your life, then by the time it catches up, you need to cut it all out. Whereas if you're able to moderate it then you don't need to cut everything out.
DankeSebVettel@reddit
Well you know the calculation. How many hours do you have left?
outoftimeman97@reddit
64 isn’t that old nowadays. He could make a significant change to his health if he makes the necessary changes. I hope he does.
Paleovegan@reddit
I’m actually stunned he’s only 64, I thought he was like ten years older
outoftimeman97@reddit
For reference Tom Cruise is only 2 years younger than him!!
syringistic@reddit
Yeah but Tom Cruise's clearly smart enough to understand his millions of dollars can keep him in amazing shape through his 80s or 90s.
Or maybe scientology knows something the general public does not lol
outoftimeman97@reddit
Yeah he is an extreme example but it is shocking to see how two people in the same age can look
ueaueauaeueau@reddit
It's shocking how much plastic surgery can help as well...
syringistic@reddit
Yeah, and it all comes down to discipline. I know Cruises net worth is probably an order or two magnitude more than Clarkson. But they can probably afford very similar levels of healthcare. Cruise just made it his goal to age as little as possible. Clarkson wanted to sit around drinking beer and eating bad food.
I do wish him the best though. I'm only 25 years younger than them, but quickly moving towards the way Clarkson looks, when I should be following the crazy scientologist.
outoftimeman97@reddit
Yeah he looks terrible for his age
KnightsOfCidona@reddit
Reminds me of an old Jimmy Carr joke when he's talking about Top Gear to Sean Lock and they show the Ariel clip with his face. Jimmy says 'he's gone 0-60 in 45 years'
RayKVega@reddit
I figured genetics, constantly drinking alcohol, stress and smoking for years will do a huge number on you. Ask my dad lol, he looks a bit older (he’s actually 40 but looks a decade or so older) because he usually drank beer since before I was even born.
nekholm@reddit
Who even thinks 64 is old? You can barely retire at that age. Depending on the country of course.
noirbourboncoffee@reddit
Honestly, I find, at least, the American recommended diet to be utter shit. They tell you not to eat meat, but then okey dokey on bread from toxic wheat, or seed oils, msg in your salad dressing. They say go low fat, go sugar free, but then not disclose what's in those.
My personal take, it'll irate Liberals, is grass fed carnivore diet for a month and nothing else, no sugar, no booze.
Monday0987@reddit
Omnivore diet. We are omnivores.
I don't disagree that America in particular has dangerous additives in food. All highly processed food is bad for you but some of the stuff that's illegal in Europe is commonly used in the USA.
ueaueauaeueau@reddit
We are opportunistic eaters.
noirbourboncoffee@reddit
I agree with that and the fact that we're omnivores. My point lies elsewhere.
Furrymcfurface@reddit
Carnivore diet helped my friend lower his blood pressure, a lot. He's not so strict anymore but still sees the benefits. At least his bp is not in the "go to the hospital" range anymore.
noirbourboncoffee@reddit
I'm happy to hear. Jordan Peterson and his daughter Michaela eat carnivores, and both of them saw tremendous outcomes. Jordan got rid of his eye floaters, and Michaela was able to get back to full mobility without abnormalities. Guys like Dr. Shawn Baker are a good source for carnivore diet and why it works. If nothing else, as elimination diet.
superjaywars@reddit
Citing Peterson is fun for you
just_another_jabroni@reddit
Less unprocessed shit+daily movements/exercise is always the way without anything complex. People in rural areas of Asia live pretty long and all they eat is just nature's produce and home grown vegetables and do farming/gardening.
BlackestNight21@reddit
Less processed: )

Jeremy Clarkson should make a series out of it….I think that it be wonderful both in entertaining and education / motivation for many others…
FlipStig1@reddit (OP)
“Tonight, on a very special episode of ‘Clarkson’s Farm,’ I get some exercise and enjoy a succulent meal of steamed fish and locally grown vegetables with a side of water, all on doctor’s orders!”
LeMonza_@reddit
A meal?! A succulent steamed fish meal?!

He could call it "Jezza-cise"
YousureWannaknow@reddit

Season 4 of Clarkson's Farm should be interesting.
ballyhire@reddit
The guy has everything. Money, fame, partner, farm...except for health. Hopefully he sorts it out.
I do like him and love his clarkson farm show.
Hopefully will see a few seasons more....

sensitiveCube@reddit
He has money to hire a personal trainer or people that can help him.
He really has to lose weight and drink less.
syringistic@reddit
That's what I never get about these people. He's got a fuckload of money to afford the best physical care in the world.
Same with Elon Musk. Dudes in his mid 50s, richest man in the world, and looks like ass.
That's kind of what impressed me about Bezos and that factory tour. He clearly realizes that the wealth he has can allow him to be in insanely good shape and live healthy until he dies.
sensitiveCube@reddit
Musk uses drugs, and Jeremy alcohol.
Both are highly addictive, but I think and hope Jezza is still on time, and this was a wakeup call he needed. It's not only the alcohol, he also likes to eat, but he was more sportive when he was younger, that also helps.
I don't think Musk wants to become clean. He is pretty much on uppers and downers all the time. I'm not an expert on them, but I think it's not that easy to combine this with his current job. Jezza is basically retired.
Also Musk is surrounded by people that say yes to him all the time, and think he's a genius.
syringistic@reddit
I've had my fair share of everything. Uppers and downers have been much easier to stop in my opinion. Alcohol is a fucking nightmare.
I guess Musk is legitimately mentally ill if he doesn't realize he's actively killing himself. And I actually feel bad for him, since noone will tell him the truth.
sensitiveCube@reddit
Sorry to hear about that. Hope you're doing well now.
Every addition is really difficult, but it does help when your environment at least tries to help you. I agree this seems to be missing in the situation of Musk. Or he refuses any help.
syringistic@reddit
Thanks! I'm still doing pretty shitty, but I see some path forward.
Re: Musk, i think his business success blew up his ego to the point where he cannot conceive of a person around him who could be more correct on any subject.

Really hope he gets serious with his health. I’ve never been an unhealthy person, but over the last 2-3 years I’ve really started to focus on my health now that I’m 35. It’s really incredible how much better you feel with serious diet and exercise. Several health issues I had for the last decade have almost all gone away entirely.

I’ll say this much….he was scared straight some years back with the pneumonia he had. Quit smoking and, as we saw for a brief bit in Seamen, lost a damn lot of weight. Was cooking southeast Asian and raving about it.
And then that all seemed to go away and the guy came back.
Will see how well he can hold to this scared straight. Grandchildren could be a difference here. And maybe even though it’s just a stenting that was more of a scare than even the pneumonia was.
FailedLoser21@reddit
Having a grandson did the same to my dad. His father passed when my brother and I were young and didn't get to have much of a relationship with him. My father is trying to avoid that with his grandson

He has been stented, it isn't open heart surgery yet. A bit less of the dodgy food and alcohol is usually enough added to a bit more exercise.
The GT was a lot of sitting around on cars but it is hard to avoid physical labour on a farm. Sure you have farmhands that help out, but you always end up walking and farm equipment and animals need strength.

feel-the-avocado@reddit
The important question is how does this affect future seasons of clarksons farm?
YousureWannaknow@reddit
He's overreacting. Just few weeks of strict diet and then limiting amounts of other stuff to make it more balanced. He'll work, he will, he has to.. Trust me, it's not "I want him to work", no, it's just that.. that person, who works all life can't stop, because they will collapse
Deflated_Hive@reddit
Hot take: Car enthusiasts were identified with Clarkson because of his main brand optics: over weight, indulgent, middle to over-the-hill-aged, and brash.
I look at a lot of drivers getting in and out of exotic cars at golf clubs, hotel valets, and cars and coffee... A majority of them look like a Clarkson variant.
Maybe this will inspire his variants to also make a health pivot.
YousureWannaknow@reddit
I don't think people who get out of exotic car at golf club, really care, and mostly likely, they have no idea about cars.. You know, not many people care about what actually cars are, they care only about badge and "fame" of brand. Funniest part of it is actually fact, that these people, who you've mentioned, have more money, way more than they can spend.. and simply don't care.
