Synology Question

I am looking to move my backup solution to Synology Active Backup. My plan would be to take my current Synology which is about 5 years old and make it a secondary off-site storage that only syncs about once every 30 days to the main NAS. My question revolves around life span. If I replace my main NAS every 4-5 years will the secondary NAS off-site last 8-10 total years as long as drives are maintained?

Assuming you have your reasoning but I’d suggest looking at Backblaze B2B (iirc). It’s costed on usage, and depending on how much you’re backing up it may be cheaper in the long run, but almost certainly more reliable

Mainly because I like to be the holder of my data. A little ironic because I work for a school and we literally live on Google. But as much as I am able to I would like to have physical copies of my data if I can. Especially VM and physical server backups.

Why not encrypt your backup data and then save it to something really cheap like AWS S3 Deep Glacier if it's just a secondary backup copy? Then you then only have to access it if your primary backup copy is not an option.

I've got about a dozen active Synology devices at multiple sites.... Some 2 bay desktop, some 4 or 8 bay rack mount units. All between 4 to 6 years old. All devices are connected to quality Eaton UPSs. I've lost multiple 2 drive units, and at least one of each of the 4 or 8 drive units over the years. Usually its a power supply failure, but just had a DS218 that just stopped working (even with a known good PS from a cold spare unit).... Wouldn't even turn on anymore. So, I still like my Synology units... But I will never fully trust them as stand alone, long term storage devices... I would never rely on one lasting 8+ years... Could it? Sure, it's possible... But make sure you have a plan and a budget to replace it before if it fails, and have a way to monitor that the device and backups are always operating as expected.
