You're invited for dinner at 18:00, what are your expectations?

Say for you example someone you don't know well invites you over at 18:00 for dinner. What would you expect in terms of food and what would you bring. I don't think I was unreasonable. I brought a bottle of decent wine, a box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers. Standard kit for new people covering all the bases. We'd had lunch and th children has been semi fed so they weren't monsters (well more than they are when fed) I've no complaints over the hospitality. The wine we drank was excellent and plentiful, the cheese was goo and there were olives. But other than a ham sandwich for the children the food was wine, olives, cheese, dried figs and grapes. Am I being unreasonable in expecting something a bit more substantial?
