favorite 90s covers of 70s songs?

Hey everyone! I have a 90s alternative radio show and every Halloween I do an all covers episode. This year, it's all covers of 70s songs by 90s bands. For example, Hole's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman", or Cake's version of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". What are your favorites?

I've been trying to keep a list of songs that sound the same just for fun. It's bound to happen - there's only 12 notes, after all - but a fun little exercise. Not for this show, but maybe a youtube video someday.

The one that always comes to mind is how close Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" is to Cheap Trick's "The Flame". Not the same song, but there's a lot of similarities

I’m gonna have to relisten to those. I was driving to work and heard Howard Jones “What is Love” which reminded me of Ministry “I Wanted to Tell Her” or maybe another song on With Sympathy. They sound like they might have had the same producer. I’m gonna check now LOL

That Type O track is perfect for Halloween. I played it the first Halloween ep I did, and played their cover of "Cinammon Girl" last year. Was thinking of playing their Black Sabbath cover this year to close the show. Need to find that Blind Melon cover, never heard it before

Great suggestion! I played their cover of Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind" on last year's show. Their covers of The Cars' "Dangerous Type" and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" are also on the shortlist. Too many to choose from!

no worries! also, FWIW, Harry Nilsson's version is a cover, too. It was originally by Badfinger. Who had a big hit with "Come and Get It" which was written by Lennon & McCartney. Nothing's real haha

Oh I have both of these and am trying to decide on which track(s) to play! Right now I'm leaning towards the Toadies' "Goolie Get-Together" bc, you know, Halloween. I \*may\* play Matthew Sweet's version of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" in light of what's happened to him recently, even though Scooby-Doo premiered in Sept 1969. TBD on that one

The entire album of Eagles covers…Common Thread. They did a great job of that one. I love Clint Black’s version of Desperado, and Vince Gill’s I Can’t Tell You Why made it clear why he was a great addition to the modern lineup. I’m not generally a big country fan, but 90s country has a soft spot in my heart.

Stretching it a little into the 60s but I've always loved Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of "Dear Prudence". E: oh nevermind, that's early 80s. But I listened to it in the 90s! Haha Also Black Sabbath's "Supernaut" covered by 1000 Homo DJs. The best one is with Trent Reznor's vocals but his label wouldn't let it out so it's bootleg. Anyway the nursing home assistant is coming around with my warm milk, now.

Mike Ness - Don’t think Twice (Dylan) Cake - Sad Songs and Waltzes (Willie Nelson) Sublime - “5446 was my number” (toots and the Maytals) and Scarlet Begonias (Grateful Dead). The originals are both better but I seem to be the only Xennial who doesn’t care for Sublime so maybe others will like them Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s first album Have a Ball is pretty much all punk covers of 70s songs. Government Mule has a 14 minute cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the killer “ Incase you need time to take a dump or something

A band called Replicants (Made up of members of Failure, Tool, and Guns n Roses) did Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" In fact, they did an entire album of covers. Pearl Jam recorded a version of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" which is fantastic.

Depending on how technical you want to get with the 90s band thing, Puscifer did a recording of Bohemian Rhapsody a few years ago. You could argue that Maynard is clearly a 90s singer. Or that he first used the name Puscifer in a comedy sketch on Mr. Show in the 90s. I know the band started in the 2000s officially, but... you could make an argument if you needed to.

I’ll say that Lauren Hill does a good job but the constant intoning of “one time, one time” and all the extra stuff makes it a more easy casual and fun head-bobbing listen but detracts from the emotionality and power of the original. If it was just Lauren it might have been more for me.

I also associate it with the end of the alternative rock era, when nu-metal started to rise (even though it's not at all nu-metal, or butt rock, as I like to call it. In a vacuum, I would be slightly more tolerant of it. I'm hit and miss on Lenny but "Are You Gonna Go My Way" is an all-time banger

I had this Led Zeppelin tribute album in the mid 1990s called Encomium that had great 90s bands covering LZ songs. A few favorites were STP cover of Dancing Days and Big Head Todd’s cover of Tangerine. It was a great album and actually my introduction to LZ. In a truly xennial experience, I actually found it underneath the passenger seat in my first car that was handed down from my older brother. It was still in its Columbia House packaging as he had meant to send it back so probably paid a lot of money for it. I only found it because I was desperately searching the car for the hemp necklace I had made and lost.

It was a 2001 album, but Tori Amos did Strange Little Girls, covering a number of songs that were originally from a man's perspective, reinterpreted from a woman's. There might be a couple of 70s covers on there. Excellent album.
