New to Plano and Looking for Volunteer & Hobby Group Suggestions!
Posted by PatternTricky6875@reddit | plano | View on Reddit | 44 comments
Hi everyone! I’m new to the Plano area and looking to get more involved in the community and make good use of my free time. My boyfriend works 9-5, and I’m a psychologist providing online therapy, which leaves me with extra time between sessions. I’d love to find volunteer opportunities or hobby groups where I can help others and connect with people. I’ve already reached out to the local animal shelter but would love suggestions for other ways I can give back, like more community service. Or just things to do like joining recreational activities like knitting groups, soccer, fitness classes, or book clubs. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Check out the city’s program here, so many opportunities, I walked dogs and it was very rewarding.

Plano is home to one of the finest Judo dojos in the world. This isn't just glazing. Eastside Dojo is literally state of the art, and might be worth checking out if you're interested in a good community and exercise.

This looks great, ty! I have no expertise in stiching. Would that be ok? or should I try to learn before going?

I honestly have no idea, I'm sorry. You may want to check out one of the STEAM kits that PPL offers, though. I know they have learn to crochet and learn to knit ones. Not sure what else!

Can’t recommend Heritage Farmstead Museum enough!! I’ve volunteered there on and off for probably 15+ years now, and I actually just got married there a week and a half ago. It’s beautiful, the people are wonderful, and Poncho the mammoth donkey is my best buddy 🫶🏻
It’s been a while since I’ve been, but in high school I did a lot with Minnie’s Food Pantry. I remember nothing but good - the people were always fantastic, and they made such an effort to make their visitors feel valued (they had a red carpet to walk down to get food, allowed people to “shop” instead of just pre done boxes, etc). I distinctly remember helping one gentleman out to load up his goodies and he teared up thanking me
Plano Parks & Rec is a great way to meet people. Admittedly, I worked at Oak Point for several years so I may be biased, but majority of people I met were just awesome. I’m in my 20’s, but my favorite people were the senior water aerobics folks 🤣 if I didn’t move I would 100% be doing a class to go hang out with them

As a Parks & Rec water aerobics instructor, the senior water aerobics folks are also my favorite 😊

I signed up for a couple of parks & recs classes, thank you! Are you still working there?
LadyAg@reddit
Oh awesome!! I’m not unfortunately, but the lifeguard crew at Oak Point will always hold a special place in my heart 🫶🏻

If you like history or animals, the Heritage Farmstead Museum at 15th & Custer always needs good volunteers! Help taking take of the animals, school tour groups, special events, etc.
PatternTricky6875@reddit (OP)
I've heard great things about the Heritage Museum, will look into it!
For the YMCA, do you pay for individual classes or is it like a membership?
domestiFem@reddit
So that's the thing I like about the Y, all the group classes are included in the monthly price and it's really affordable for a single adult membership.
If you already know what you're doing and just want to use the equipment, then the Parks & Rec centers are fantastic, but all the classes cost extra.

I don't know if you are interested in photography, but there are several photography clubs in the area including the Plano Photography Club.

Join the Junior League of Collin County! Tons of volunteer opportunities as well as social opportunities like book clubs, dinners, workout groups, etc. It’s been a great way to make friends and support the community.
Other specific volunteer recommendations are North Texas Food Bank, City House, and Community Garden Kitchen. All great organizations doing amazing work. There is also a big event every Saturday at different locations where you can join hundreds of volunteers to make sandwiches for the homeless—just google Tango Feed the City.
If you like bicycling, check out Bike Friendly Richardson and Plano Bike Association on Facebook for regularly scheduled social rides.

Thank for the info! Looking into it

I 2nd the NTFB, especially if you're schedule is flexible. Lately a lot of their distribution center volunteer slots have been during the week, but they have weekend events at other locations as well.

Do you enjoy gardening? I volunteer at a nonprofit farm close by, they grow all kinds of vegetables and raise quail.
toastnjuice@reddit
Where’s this?
Mental-Foundation901@reddit
It's The Giving Garden at Jacobs Reward Farms. Here's the websites url: The Giving Garden at Jacob's Reward Farm
They grow fruits and vegetables for the Allen food bank as well as raise egg hens, meat chickens, and quail for their eggs and meat. The chicken products get donated to the food bank and the quail products help the farm stay up and running. They sell them through the online farmers market hub https://www.profoundfoods.com/ .
You can volunteer on Saturdays from 7:30-11:00 am. You'll spend your time doing garden chores, tending to the animals, building various projects and helping keep the farm running. They are volunteer ran and donation funded so they always need help. The people who lead it are great and love the opportunity to teach the community how to grow and raise their own food.
toastnjuice@reddit
Do you recommend muck boots?
Mental-Foundation901@reddit
You don't really get super dirty, but it is a farm so you might get some chicken poop on you. Sometimes the people who are up for it have to clean the quail trays and that involves water and poop so it might splash on your shoes. But of course if you're not into that stuff you don't have to do it there are plenty of things to do.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to join!

In Sync Exotics in Wylie is dedicated to the rescue of exotic cats. Heard Museum in McKinney is a nature museum and dedicated to restoring our natural habitat and education. Both places are great! Oh also The Blackland Prairie Raptor Center in Lucas, they are dedicated to habitat restoration and rescuing birds of prey.
Thanks for being a volunteer!! Good ones are needed in so many areas of life!

Check out City House. May be done volunteer opportunities there.

Welcome to Plano!
I don’t have a list of names or websites but there are running and cycling groups here. There are also lots of adult sports leagues for pickleball, soccer, softball, and others. Other people might post with exactly where to find them online if a Google search doesn’t work.
The Plano Sports Authority (PSA1) on Preston Meadow has six indoor pickleball courts which are open every day M-F (9 AM-9PM) and Sat-Sun (8 AM - 9 PM). I see people of all ages play there and I’ve made some really nice new friends there. There is a big group of folks wearing matching team jerseys who practice there regularly and are very nice. They play cards between games and it’s obvious they love being together.
I think the Plano.gov website has a list of places to volunteer. I think you should consider trying different place to volunteer until you find like-minded people. You wrote you already reached out to the animal shelter which is great.
Plano Parks and Recreation (you can read about it on Plano.gov) is really wonderful. They run about six or seven different recreation centers in Plano, with pools, weight rooms, basketball courts, badminton, pickleball, ping ping, indoor walking/running tracks and other things. The cost is minimal (like $150/year). They also have a big online catalog with classes you can pay extra for. All the classes are inexpensive. They offer classes on almost anything you can imagine from aerobics, painting, yoga, Pilates, pottery, dancing, and probably 200 other things. It’s amazing.
DM me about what books you like. I know a couple people in different book groups around here.
I volunteer with Meals On Wheels and think it’s very rewarding. I deliver meals to seniors. However, delivering meals is not good for meeting people to socialize with because I only see my senior clients. The Meals On Wheels Of Collin County website offers other volunteer opportunities which are more social. It’s a great organization which does a lot of good. The meal delivery volunteering is nice in that you can have a regular route/day and just go do it without having to sign up all the time. For example, you can do route 18 on the first Monday of every week or month. So it’s just on your calendar like that forever until you quit or change it. When you first try it, of course, you wouldn’t commit to that. You would just try to do it one day. I do the same exact route and never change to a different route because it much more enjoyable (and tons easier!!!) once you get to know where the stops are and you get to know the seniors. I’ve delivered to some of them for several years.
Berg323@reddit
The online catalog for Plano Parks and Rec is for classes that are in-person. I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear.
comedian1924@reddit
Interested as well.
