is it worth the upgrade from 3900x to 9800x3d ?

right now i have a 3900x paired with an 4080 , i know that its a bottleneck but as long as i get 4k/60fps i dont care
i dont know how much will the 3900x be able to achieve 60fps so im thinking of upgrading now to the latest 9800x3d and keep it for 5-6 years
should i do it ?

3900x isn't a gaming CPU, is there other reason why you got it? If you don't need it to do productivity workloads, and/or your main use case is gaming, just get a 5700x3d, it pairs very well with a 4080.

similar question (3900x looking to see if I should upgrade before tarrifs...) I'm a 3d artist and trying to find good sources for a 9800x3d vs something like a 9900x or if I should just go to the top AM4 chip I can find....
Pesebrero@reddit
Get a 5900x or a 5950x.

Nor should you care, "bottleneck" is a marketing term anyways and is used with the intention of making customer feel like they need to spend more money.
If you currently do not experience issues, then there is nothing to fix. If you want your upgrade to be "worth it", then why not upgrade when you actually notice issues?
klaudele@reddit
You can also spend LESS money to avoid bottlenecks. It is not a marketing term, it is used for optimizing whatever the fuck you buy in order to not spend more than you need on some piece because it will only provide you less performance than it is capable of because of some other piece.
panzrvroomvroomvroom@reddit
why would you want to buy a cpu thats not even released?
thats about as dumb as preordering AAA games
Antique_Cranberry265@reddit
I don't know why people insist on buying the top end to "futureproof" themselves years before they actually start to notice any sort of performance woes. Stop watching YouTube so much. Start upgrading when you actually need to upgrade. You see those guys selling gaming PCs with like, Gen 7 i5s and 2060 Supers in 2024? THEY are the goats. They rode that shit until the wheels fell off, and they didn't worry about overspending up front so they could justify overpriced products. They got their shit, they gamed, they upgraded when they had to, not before.

I wanted to do that so I could hold off on upgrading for 10 more years
My 6650xt kinda needs a bit more upgrading though
(4690k and gtx 960 4gb to 7800x3d and 6650xt, may upgrade gpu more soon)
Antique_Cranberry265@reddit
That processor is definitely an "until the wheels fall off" proposition, but honestly GPU, you can get a lot of play for $350 right now. Long as you're off Nvidia
snail1132@reddit
I got it for like $180 lol, and am unfortunately lacking the funds for a better gpu
Hopefully the price to performance on Intel Arc Battlemage is there
Antique_Cranberry265@reddit
I hope so too. I was honestly pretty happy with where Intel prices (eventually) settled, even the a380's pretty good for the price when it's on sale, as is the a580 and the a750 if you can get it for the Sub-$140 price point.

Love the way you think, brother.

maybe wait until the 9800x3d is actually released
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
I'm on a 5900x and I'm "hoping" to do the upgrade.
Similar boat, I know I'm being held back but I'm still getting a great experience with my 3090. I'm waiting for official benchmarks and if it's about 10% or more ahead of the 7800x3d I might just bite the bullet and do it.

im satisfied right now aswell , there hasnt been a game in which i didnt get 60+ fps but im still trying to think long term , i dont think that the 3900x will be able to do 4k/60fps in 2026+
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
For me its the frame time inconsistences with the 5900x. I'm getting some bad 1 and 0.1% lows which is making the overall experience feel not so great I know I "could" get a 5800x3d and solve those, but it feels like too much of a side step on a platform thats already end of life. And I think this 12 core beast would be better suited in my home server anyways.
