What kind of car do you wish a certain manufacturer would make?
Posted by Crocodile_Banger@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 257 comments
Is there a type of car that a specific manufacturer should be making but isn’t? For example, Subaru doesn’t offer a convertible, or Mazda hasn’t built a minivan like the Mazda 5 for quite some time (at least here in Europe). What do you think is a gap in the lineup for a brand you like, and what kind of car would you want to see them add?
imothers@reddit
I would love it if anyone made a car with comfortable seats and a compliant suspension the way the French used to. Renaults and Peugeots from the 70's and 80's handled bumps so much smoother than anything modern. Roads are getting worse, not better in most places, but tire sidewalls are shrinking and wheel are getting larger, which is the opposite of what you want for rough roads.
I would also love it if small, comfortable cars were light enough and had small enough tires that they didn't need power steering, you get more road feel without it. This used to be the way...
Something like a Lotus Elise but with AC that works well and a roof that doesn't leak would be wonderful. A cross between an MR2 and an Elise... the general idea is similar, but the execution quite different.

New lightweight Civic hatchback sized according to the older ones with double wishbone suspension with a high revving NA 4 banger (preferably something lighter than the K, maybe a slightly cammed, better flowing 75x89mm L15BU ?

I wish Lucid would make a compact sedan the size of a 3 series or something, from what I hear the Air on its own has good driving dynamics and is very fun to drive. Give me a cheaper, smaller Lucid and I’d be all over it. Unfortunately after the gravity they’re working on a compact crossover.
reddit_lemming@reddit
God yes, I’d love a Porsche 4-door the size of a 3-series or smaller

Grambo-47@reddit
Seriously lol Porsche just needs to suck it up and build a hot hatch on the Golf/A3 platform. Give it the 2.5T that the RS3 has, or maybe a turbocharged VR6 even. 6MT/8AT options. MSRP around $80,000. Would be phenomenal
kaighr@reddit
This sounds lovely. GT version with the TT 4.0 v8 too.

As a 3-series owner desperately wishing to be back in a Porsche but wanting to stick with a sedan, I dream about a Porsche sedan smaller than the Panamera all the time.

More compact pickups and SUVs like the 95-05 rangers and the 01 explorer sports like my own. Modern lightweight utility. I love that my Explorer is a short wheelbase but still offers 4 seats. I love that it’s a 4wd that can do some light towing if I need it to. Same thing with the rangers since they were based on the same platform. I wish the only compact SUV options these days weren’t the overpriced bronco or the POS Jeep renegade.
argote@reddit
VW Taos GTI.
They already have the Cupra Ateca in other markets.
Pynchon_A_Loaff@reddit
Ford: bring back the Flex, with a new interior. Don’t forget an ST version.
Ford: I really miss the Thunderbird nameplate. At least they tried with the 2001-2005 revival. Maybe with a Lincoln-esque interior, and Coyote engine… Emphasize luxury and quality rather than Nurburgring times.
Chevrolet: a Macan sized high performance SUV and call it the Nomad. Give it C8 level interior and technology. Essentially a front engined Corvette SUV, but don’t CALL it a Corvette.
Chevrolet: The original Monte Carlo was conceived as an American sports coupe that would rival BMW. It slowly devolved into a FWD joke plastered with Dale Earnhardt stickers. Revive the Monte Carlo as a RWD sedan (Alpha chassis? LT2 engine?). Unfortunately this might fall uncomfortably close to the CT4/CT5 in the marketplace, but I can dream.
Cadillac: I’m still pissed off about the CT6 and the Blackwing V8. WHYYYYY!
Yesterday I saw a lovingly maintained 3rd generation Ford Ranger pickup. I had forgotten how small those things were. I would think Ford could sell a million of those things today. Sadly, it probably wouldn’t be as profitable as today’s Maverick.
Mercurydriver@reddit
This is more-so a general thing, but I wish more car companies would start making more compact pickup trucks.
I love my Ford Maverick. It’s perfect for my lifestyle. It’s utilitarian but still easy to live with on a daily basis. But as of now in the US, we only have 2 options, the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
I’d love it if there were multiple, competing compact trucks much like how almost every other market segment has a wide variety of choices. GM could bring back the S10, Toyota could make the Stout a truck smaller than the Tacoma, even a new Subaru Brat or Baja would be nice to see.
I just want the compact truck segment to grow.
tallon4@reddit

I remember when a Ranger was that size. Cracking little truck.
Older people might even remember F150s being that size
ChasedWarrior@reddit
I think it was the F100.
ChasedWarrior@reddit
I love to see a small truck that's a real truck and not based on an suv, like the original Ranger or S10.
MrBattleRabbit@reddit
I wish the Maverick had more cab/bed size options as well- that footprint, but with an extended cab rather than the full four door “crew cab” sort of layout it has would be ideal for me.
Also, since we no longer have the Transit Connect in the US, a small commercial van based on the Maverick seems like it’d be a nice thing to have on the market. IE a two door Maverick with a van body at the back, maybe even a high-roof rear section a la the second gen VW Caddy (the Polo-based one from the 90s)
Buckus93@reddit
Ford will happily sell you a Ranger or F-series.
MrBattleRabbit@reddit

Eastern_News_7937@reddit
If you cruise at in 4th gear at 5000 RPM all the time, this is the MPG you get. If you would drive it in 6th gear 2500 rpm between hard driving and pulls you could achieve 26 MPG easily
thejaekexperience@reddit
Closest thing that I can think of is the new Prelude. They confirmed it will use the same powertrain as this year's hybrid civic, so no manual but from what I've heard it's a great powertrain for normal driving on account of how smooth and efficient it is.
Definitely a niche within a niche and I can understand why enthusiasts don't have high hopes for it, but personally I have a lot of interest in an affordable hybrid sports coupe and I hope they can deliver something good here. The CR-Z missed the mark for me, but for my needs and driving habits having something small and efficient and fun would be perfect, even though obviously that means compromising on the driving experience. Just hopefully not too much. And if it's a liftback like the RSX that would be even better.
Immynimmy@reddit
Isn’t the taycan coupe supposed to be a thing soon? If so, whenever it’s released, could probably pick up a used one for a fraction of the price

How does 93 affect your gas mileage?
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
Supposedly higher octane should give you better MPG and performance. Though I can't tell the difference between 91 and 93.
03Void@reddit
Because it doesn't. The only thing higher octane does is to resist pre detonation better. So if your engine requires high octane, use that. If not, don't.
Everything else is snake oil and placebo.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
The manual recommends 93 though 91 is acceptable.
I'm still disappointed with the results of the higher quality gas, even though it's better for engine.

I think [insert manufacturer] should make a lightweight, read wheel drive, manual, affordable sports car just like the [fairly niche car produced from before 2010]. Is the go to answer for this but I'll try to give a more realistic answer.
I wish Hyundai would allow Genesis to build a true competitor to M and AMG. I think Genesis is extremely competitive in the luxury market and one of the most overrated brands, and I would like to see them take a crack at a true performance sedan.

Speaking of Mazda, they should really find a way to put that new hybrid inline 6 in a sedan/saloon. Something a bit smaller, cooler and faster than that boat they put that engine in. Also, Audi and Subaru should release "OEM lift kits" for Imprezas and A3, A4s and such. Just an option to have an extra 1" for snowy regions. I dunno.

Captain_Alaska@reddit
You mean midsized? None of the cars you listed are full sized (and there's basically none left with the Charger and 300 discontinued).
Zbinxsy@reddit
Yeah that makes sense, it's all a play to get people into SUVs which cost more, and uses 4wd systems that 80% of consumers have little to no need for.
Captain_Alaska@reddit
I mean a real full sized wagon was just heavy as modern SUVs and (unless you're literally comparing them to a Suburban, which isn't always the longer vehicle either) quite a bit longer too.

I want Chevy to make an AWD hot hatch. It's so impressive what they've done with the Corvette over the years. I'd love to see them put that level of effort into a hot hatch. Or even Camaro ZL1 1LE levels of effort.
They could use the turbo 2.7 liter. Come on Chevy I'll buy one.
RIG_PIG69@reddit
Would be cool if they put a manual in the Corvette. Right now any sports car without a manual is doo doo to me.
driftking428@reddit
If the platform is successful enough I bet they will.
HOONIGAN-@reddit
Not making an SS version of the second-gen Cruze hatchback was a mistake.
driftking428@reddit
It just feels like they have everything they need to do it. They don't need a brand new platform. Make a few and see how they sell.
HOONIGAN-@reddit
Well, they did have everything. The only car that Chevy makes is the Corvette. Everything else is gone.

For Mopar....
Bring back the Viper, Stealth, and Omni.
Viper (halo car): Front mid engine, "small" hemi V10, flat plane, NA. Steal the interior design language from AMG. Add augmented reality to show apex lines. Suede interior. Buick prototype hide-away doors
Stealth (tech showcase): Under square oversized V6, longitudinally mounted engine w/ rear bias AWD and AWS, twin turbo. Hybrid with electric motor in rear diff to give a 2 second torque boost off the line. 2+2 seating with 4 cup holders. Hatchback or shooting brake. Get weird with materials (ceramic coatings, carbon fiber driveline...) Go hog wild with tech on the interior. Car should be as short and wide as possible. Must have a black edition.
Omni (everyman's car, emissions play): econobox with an over square 4-cyl and thick forged internals (I'm talking tractor motor). Rated to tow 4000 lbs European style trailers. Wide operating tolerances on all critical dimensions. 5-speeds, no more. Absolutely no tech outside of power windows and auto lights. Make it reliable by removing all the bullshit that sends cars back to the dealer. Low entry price, but can be optioned up. Make it light weight
If FCA is reading this, I'm available to be your CEO when you're ready.

I wish every company that does trucks would make a barebones single cab 8-foot bed 4x4 pickup. You can't get that from Toyota, Nissan, or Ford or Chevy unless you go for ½ ton trucks. A regular cab Ranger or Colorado or Tacoma with nothing but the basics would kick ass, especially with how capable these "mid-size" pickups can be made. Also, if anybody wants to make ½ to 1 ton pickups that aren't absolutely gargantuan road yachts, that'd be cool too. I don't need a 6' tall hood, but I do like being able to tow trailers and haul tools and materials.
Oh, and Toyota and Honda should make full-sized cargo vans. They'd dominate the market. Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Ram, whatever, they're alright. Ford Transits are actually pretty great. But a Toyota cargo van? Something made to be abused forever? Every trades company would buy them.
Honestly, I also wish Honda made more burly vehicles. I know they're the brand of unibody everything, and efficient economy sedans, and aluminum, and turbos, and whatever. But I'd love to see them be bold and make a ½ ton pickup with true 4x4. I bet they could make a pickup that gets zero attention and remains underrated and sells poorly until they stop production and then it becomes a desireable vehicle once you can't buy them anymore.

I think this is exactly why the s2000 is still relevant compared to brand new 86s and Miatas. While on paper, those cars are better, people love and remember the S for its gem of a motor. Reliable, high revs, and full of character.
The nd2/3 Miata is mostly there. I had an nd2 and I thought that motor was great. Every time I drive an 86 I feel like it doesn't enjoy being rung out. That's really it's issue. The chassis is great, though.

I used my Jeeps to their fullest and no, an FJC or 4 runner don't give me all of what I want. So I'm stuck with jeep until someone else, other than Ford, decides to build one. That or wait 25 years to import a Jimny.

Literally anybody needs to make an economical subcompact with an easy 50+mpg again.
Anybody. Don't care who slaps the badge on it, my 2 are aging and I wanna slap a new one in the fleet. One doesn't have A/C and the other in a project car, I'd happily toss another one in the mix.
Elianor_tijo@reddit
I'll second the Versa. It's pretty much the only one.
Manual subcompacts are going the way of the dodo. Manuals are going the way of the dodo for that matter.
Other than that Versa, you get in "affordable" (used to be affordable imo) small sedans. The Jetta GLI being one. There's the Civic Si, but that's an increase in price. Same with the WRX. The Elantra N is losing its manual with the 2025 model year. The BRZ, GR6 and Miata are not insanely expensive, but they are two doors. From then on, the manuals get even more expensive.
Bottom line is that if you're on what would have been new economy car budget not long ago, you can't afford new anymore.
Drzhivago138@reddit
There are a lot of people like that, and typically they get by running cheap used cars. Even if they don't get 50 MPG, fuel is cheap enough in the US that it would take a lot of driving to make up for the cost of a new vehicle. And nobody buys a manual for fuel economy anymore.
MysticMarbles@reddit
Eh, I've yet to see an economical CVT versus a 5 or 6 speed on the budget lines of most vehicles. Sure they are normally rated better but in actual use the stick normally wins out. This goes out the window with vehicles that make enough power to not notice driveline losses quite as bad but lemme tell ya, the Mirage CVT eats enough ponies to put a MAJOR dent in the economy figures all the way up to about 105km/h. (And the Micra came with a 4 speed auto that actually did better, economy cars don't really follow a normal trend)
And fair, I'm Canadian are while fuel is oddly cheap right now I'm no stranger to $7.50/gallon.Maybe I'm just showing my age, or wishing to go back to the before times, but tax included both of my cars totalled about $25,000 off the lot. I'm not saying I expect to buy another new car for $10,200 ever again... but a man can dream.
And I just like super economical pieces of junk. Dollar per remaining-driveable-mile they were always the best value. No point paying $4000 for a rusted out 9 year old vehicle that'll fail inspection within a couple years.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Fair, this is on me a bit for defaulting to US situations. Most states here don't have safety inspections, even if they do have emissions inspections.
MysticMarbles@reddit
I mean it's every 2 years here and if you go to the right shops most places are pretty lenient (it ain't no TUV or even MOT) but still, salt will be on the roads in a couple days from now until potentially June, things just don't last here; The price reduction needed to make an used car worth it gets a lot crazier when you can really only trust a vehicle for a bit longer than some people make payments.
and yes, I sand the frame rust off and repaint every spring and fluid film every fall, but with 7 years on the Mirage, I think it's due for a fender and a door next year not that Mitsu is known for great paintwork
Drzhivago138@reddit
My over 15-year-old Mazda Tribute was showing some rust bubbles when I got rid of it, but the reason I did wasn't that; it was that the transmission was starting to slip. If that had held up I probably could've driven it until the strut towers busted through the fenders. I know one Escape owner who did that.
ubermorph@reddit
I mean, the Nissan Versa is pretty much exactly what you're looking for. It's the cheapest vehicle you can buy and rather decent for the price if you must go new.

I think so, and now that we're in an era with historically-normalized interest rates, I bet we're going to start a slow transition away from meme-cars and more towards need-basis segments. I wish VW went back to making fun, sporty, BMW-like cars again. I would give anything to see a modern VW with a VR6 and *German* looks again.
Right now it feels like most of their lineup is kind of "washed out" generic, which I know appeals to a broader (non-car person) audience, but the lack of fun or creativity is really hurting what made VW so popular in the 2000s. (And the things that are super creative and fun like the I.D Buzz are too expensive.) The SUVs are just your standard generic SUV type, and the GTI and R (which are the only Golfs here in the states) are too similar to the previous gen to warrant an upgrade (and with no manual transmission anymore in the GTI). The only VW you can now get in the states with a stick is the GLI (which I do really like).
This is something that isn't just hurting VW's image, I know a lot of people who see the same thing happening with their favorite companies too. I genuinely hope VW gets "that same old feeling" I miss!

All automakers. Bring back small basic pickups. Manual transmission option. Barebones basic workhorse vehicles like the older Rangers, S10’s, and Tacomas.
Basic trucks could be had brand new for $15k. As recently as 2011. Inflation adjusted to 2024 that’s ~$20k in today’s dollars.
The newer trucks they offer (Ranger, Colorado/Canyon, Tacoma) are just too costly to buy/own for someone to use as a daily driver work vehicle. They’re also much larger.
Not everyone wants to spend $45-50k+ to get a truck they’re gonna work hard every day. Dings, dents, scratched paint, etc.
