Ranch rifle

Any reccomendations on an upper or build for a decent ranch rifle? I'm getting a chicken coop and a couple heifers soon and I want to fend off some yotes and pigs from our land as well as maybe bag a deer this winter. Was thinking some sort of 6mm arc? Open to reccomendations. Also I have a progressive reloading press I'm learning to use so if it's friendly to that I'd be happy. Don't need a precision rifle.

An AR in 5.56 is the practical, sensible answer. Lightweight, affordable, can easily mount any optic you need to it, and you have endless ammunition choices for pretty much any 2 to 4 legged critter on this continent.
The classy choice is a vintage Winchester model 94
The insanely based choice is a Remington model 8

Going to depend on the range you are engaging at and if your state has minimum legal caliber for deer.

From the point I'm allowed to shoot at to the furthest engagement range my property allows its around 600 yards

Buy a bow.

An AR in 5.56 or .223 Wylde and an extra .300blk upper.
Save for a suppressor and SBR stamp and get a 8 inch barrel and a can for the .300blk so you don't wake your neighbors hunting yotes.
Even a 16" barrel in .300blk will be a good lightweight thumper.

Honestly a lever action 357 or 44 mag wpukd probably be better for this. 30-30 is another good pick, but overkill for coyotes.

Better get a 45-70 in case some T-Rex show up

If you learn anything from Jurassic Park or Jurassic World it's that if you mix Redheads and Dinosaurs people are going to get killed. You can have Redheads or you can have Dinosaurs, but if you put them both together people are going to get eaten.

I have limited experience but I agree a 6mm of some sort sounds ideal. 5.56 is light for deer and pigs. If you have serious pigs - the kind that might kill you when they get mad - maybe something that starts with a 4 would be better.

I'm not too worried about getting close. Typically I just sit in the bed of my truck with my .243 bolt gun. Won't be much different I just want a semi auto i can throw a night scope on and hit more than 1 or 2 when they are terrorizing the property. Debating a 6mm arc ar15 or .243 ar10 build
Twissn@reddit
Why not .308 if you’re already considering an AR10?
No_Staff594@reddit (OP)
Because if 6mm arc is worth running I can have a lighter weight gun and use the same projectiles I run in my bolt gun
EnD79@reddit
The 6 ARC cartridge is fine. Since you will be reloading, the ammo costs will not be prohibitive. It makes sense to use the same projectiles for your bolt gun and your semi-auto carbine. It will take care of deer and feral hogs just fine.
Twissn@reddit
Cool. I don’t know much about it but it sounds like a good option.
Kromulent@reddit
The AR10 is the platform to have if you think you might might want more power later. If your vehicle is going to lug it around for you, the extra weight is not a problem, and it softens the recoil.
If you are wearing it on your back a lot, the AR15 is a better friend, but the power level only goes so high.
I had a 6mm Rem bolt gun, basically a costlier .243, and I was pretty fond of it. You'll need to full-length resize for the AR10, but it looks like you already have everything else ready to go.
Haunting-Broccoli-95@reddit
Just get you an AR... You'll be fine. I hunt hogs deer coyotes whatever I want with them.. I have both a 556 and a 308 .. can't go wrong with either one

6mm ARC for coyotes and hogs?
Dude. Get an AR.

My feed truck guns a mk18 in 556 now with a t1 g45 combo. Ran a strike eagle 1-6 for alotta years, a big deal to me shooting from the truck was no brake and a short barrel.
zmaint@reddit
In addition to the rifle I'd suggest a good thermal.
Gunner4201@reddit
ATM makes one for under a $1000.

The Ruger ranch chambered in .300 blackout is awesome with a suppressor, bolt is a little clunky but it shoots well. AR15 chambered in 300 blackouts also good choice if you want it suppressed.

6.5 grendel is best for energy and close in hunting up to deer sized game out of an AR15 platform. It beats 6ARC out to around 450 yards, and thats out of hunting range because neither can do much beyond that besides hit paper. My grendel is cheap to shoot and sub MOA without much effort. It is also fantastic to reload for and has quite a few good bullets to choose from.
Another option is the 350 legend. It's great for deer, but not as great for reloading, and projectiles are picky to feed in some platforms so they aren't as reliable or enjoyable to reload. But the factory loads are pretty good so if you go that route, you just need to test the loads out really well to make sure they feed.

Could always do a .300 BLK semi auto build. people using them to hunt hogs and such already within 300 yards. And the parts are more available out there for them now with more loading options.
i think even Smith and Wesson along with POF are making 6arc rifles now if you dont want to break the bank with say a geissele
BetterthanU4rl@reddit
+1 for something in .300 blk. CMMG's Dissent Ranch Rifle would be a nice choice if you're going to buy not build.
KillerSwiller@reddit
An AR in .300 BLK should work for your needs. There's no shortage of videos out there of folk using them to take out feral hogs with it.
The advantage of 6mm ARC is that it is basically like a heavier 5.56 effective out to \~1000 meters; it's probably overkill for what you need and at a $1-1.50 per round it's probably not very cost effective either. .300 BLK, on the other hand, is about half the cost at $.45-$.60 per round.

Ruger Ranch Rifle in whatever caliber you like. 5.56, 308, 450 Bushmaster. Might be able to find a deal on a gen 1 with the gen 2s out now.

I just parted with a ruger american. Wasn't too fond of the action or the stock. Any Semi auto reccomendations?

AR15 should do it

If you don't ming reloading 6mmx45 (Basically just 223 remington necked up) could be a simple and cheap improvement over basic 223.
