The crazy thing is that there are legitimately all-in-one LS swap kits you can get for the ND Miata. Maintains the factory gauge cluster and everything.
I'll assume the configurator is more of a marketing tool in this case? Most of the 799 cars are already ordered by people who got notified beforehand right?
Well, that's revenue, not profit. Considering how much development and tooling costs, they probably won't make too much profit on such a small volume model.
It's to a point where they artificially add harsher and harsher requirements to weed out customers for limited production cars like this because so many of their customers can actually afford this car.
To buy this car you most likely have a LaFerrari, bought at least 1 version of every new car since the LaFerrari, gone to Ferrari sponsored events, and probably have a strong buying history with the dealer that gets a few allocations of these.
This is why I can't like exotics. Of course they're expensive but all the additional ritual and snobbery involved sours this type of car for me. Fuck, cars are meant to be driven.
Probably easier to buy a fleet of GT3 racecars and hire a team than it is to buy this thing.
You have three choices when demand exceeds supply:
1) The Porsche North America model: allow dealers to raise the price to the true market value. Under this model the cars go to whoever is willing to pay the biggest markups. Rewarding casual buyers and flippers.
2) The Ferrari model: prioritizing people who are known to want the cars for themselves. Rewarding people who have history with the brand and people who participate in their track/racing programs.
3) The Ford GT model: take applications and pick people based on how big their celebrity status is and how likely they are to show off the car in a positive light. Rewarding people for their fame and having an audience.
None of these approaches are going to make everyone happy. Do you have a better system to decide who gets something when “just make enough so everyone can have one” isn’t a viable answer?
Prob should take that F80 down payment you were saving and buy RACE stock. Only half joking, their luxury brand management is working well and it’s been a good investment recently.
This isn't always true, just so you all know. It's a marketing tactic. They can't say "we haven't sold them all". They say "most are gone or all are gone", but they aren't. The dealers are still pushing them to clients. And most dealers can allocate themselves orders and re-sell them. Ferrari is Apple, they know how to PR well.
I just like doing a spec or two anytime something debuts...
I forgot there's a large contingent within this subreddit which is almost solely negative for anything that isn't exactly affordable to 100% of society, and it's negative about that too unless it's a kitsch/novelty item. There's essentially nothing this subreddit isn't borderline rageful about.
If you're just annoyed by Ferrari's marketing then that's fine, if it's a broader us-vs-rich argument then I can comment on that too.
MR_Se7en@reddit
Oh so we can dream about owning a car we can’t afford and can’t purchase because they are already sold…
Ferrari should just create a “build-a-Ferrari” workshop because it’s as close as any of us will get to one.
evol450@reddit
And? Is that Ferrari's fault? Fuck, you guys are miserable.
Flashy-Marketing-167@reddit
So what?
realtomatocatsup@reddit
The allocations are taken already. Had my heart set on an F80. Should I go with the GR86 or Miata instead? Input?
AnnoyingRingtone@reddit
GR86 vs Miata conversation has been beat to death at this point and it all comes down to this:
As a daily or regularly use the trunk and backseats to store things? GR86.
As a second car to have fun in? Miata.
iatekane@reddit
Which one is better for an LS swap is the real question

finkerbell@reddit
Ferrari already said they’ve informally allocated all of the new F80’s
XMAN2YMAN@reddit
Amazing that they have a sit down and literally pick who will pay them millions to have the “honor” and “privilege” to own this car.
finkerbell@reddit
Based on the sales price, selling the 799 F80’s will bring them in $2.8 billion, absolutely crazy.
53bvo@reddit
That F1 team won’t finance itself
Actually these days with the cost cap it isn’t that far off but the sentiment stands
hi_im_bored13@reddit
More like the LMH team won’t finance itself
SuspiciousLettuce56@reddit
That's also cost capped
Lander_Design@reddit
damn, that's crazy. But production cost will probably be quite high
finkerbell@reddit
Ferrari’s operating margin is historically >25%, so still highly profitable for them

Has buying a luxury sports car always been like this? It’s so far outside my reality that I barely keep up with these things.
NotPumba420@reddit
I would also stand in line to buy this thing as you can sell it for 1 mil more a day later

I think it's more the "honor" and "privilege" of being able to flip it down the road should you choose to do so for a profit.

I’d be a lot less cynical if this was McLaren or Porsche, if that helps.
Ferrari is everything I hate about the high end market.
Tnargkiller@reddit
Ah, got it. Fair enough. Apologies for taking it into a broader scope.
TheChlorideThief@reddit
What other hyper car configurators are out there?
Tnargkiller@reddit
The SP3 Daytona were available at one point. Not sure if it is anymore though. I think the last "holy trinity", the only one available was the 918.

It’s disappointing how McLaren never makes one for their halo cars
