For me the Holy Grail of VLB is the 486DX-50. Clock the VLB to 50Mhz and you are good. Not every VLB card will run at 50Mhz but there are solid ones. There is the AMD 486DX2-100 but I have never seen those in the wild.

Not as simple as that, I used to build these back in the day, as very few VESA cards could handle it, and you had to be careful of the memory, and even then you more than likely had to create wait states in the BIOS to make them run reliably, a work around was to use ISA cards on '486 boards with a 50mhz local bus, this is why the DX2 chips came out, so the peripherals remained in spec.

I agree it was tricky but doable. For disk BusLogic scsi could run at 50Mhz with solid results.
