386 restored and customized a bit ;)

Another old machine completely restored and customized a bit!
It’s a 33MHz 386 with 4MB of RAM, 2MB OAK video card and an ESS1688 sound card.
Ok-Hotel-8551@reddit
So classy, but does it run Doom?
computix@reddit
No doubt it does, but slowly. Doom is really made to be run on 486s and DX2-66 (with a VLB or PCI video card) is needed to run it at full speed (35 FPS).
People on here often underestimate what it takes to run Doom at a playable framerate.
Own_Injury9498@reddit
Ahh the good old days….when you could have the opposite problem as well. Where your hardware was too good and the game would run too fast and you’d have to install software to slow down your computer 😂😂😂
myself248@reddit
I really need to reassemble a set of parts matching my first 486, which was a DX-40 (not DX2) with a VLB video card. I swear the higher bus speed made a difference because it ran Quake just fine, which "required" a Pentium 75.
computix@reddit
I think you're probably misremembering that. The Pentium has a massively faster FPU than the 486. The Pentium's FPU is fully pipelined and about 3 to 5 times as fast. This FPU really made games like Quake possible.
The Pentium's FPU is actually pretty cleverly made and compares well to many of its contempararies, like Pentium competitor/clone CPUs from AMD and Cyrix, MIPS CPUs from that time, SPARC CPUs from that time, etc. The only thing it doesn't even come close to is DEC Alpha AXP.
A 40 MHz bus speed may have helped gaming performance though, VLB at 40 MHz is pretty fast. It has a simple low overhead protocol compared to PCI.
therealjody@reddit
I just wanted to chime in that I used to run quake on a pentium 60.
Goddamn autocarrot tried to turn "pentium" into "centrum" just now. I guess we're getting old and need to take our vitamins. JFC
prosper_0@reddit
Quake ran sluggishly on my am5x86 at 40MHz x 4 (160MHz), and a VLB card.
Vinylmaster3000@reddit
I was able to play through Doom ep 1-3 on a DX2-66 with a PCI card. Very playable, sometimes slow. I would say it goes at 28FPS and doesn't max out to 35.
Tried to go through SS1 and even that was somewhat playable but it got unbearable on the Maintenance level.
HighKing81@reddit
Try fastdoom, it'll run fine on that :)
green_boy@reddit
Absolutely gorgeous, did you find the system mostly intact, or did you retro build it?
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Had to clean absolutely everything, painted the whole front etc
to3cutter@reddit
Božo jes to ti?
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
It iz aj!
HMFIC_91@reddit
But can it run crysis?
RO4DHOG@reddit
https://imgur.com/a/yja78X1 Mine.
Shes a 4th Gen called 486 33
Wish i had a turbo button LED loke yours dors.
RO4DHOG@reddit
Too bad it doesn't boot. I would have liked to see screenshots of the BIOS, and oogle at the BEEP from the PC speaker. But it obviously doesn't work or you would have included it booting up.
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
It works just fine
RO4DHOG@reddit
I WANNA SEE MOAR
Distinct-Question-16@reddit
I recall this exact case but no orange, gray, I believe. Great games
manuelink64@reddit
The blue paint in the interior is chef kiss. Any tips for paint that kind of metal?
trustbrown@reddit
I had a job was building these in a retail shop, with parts from Ingram.
Thanks for the blast from the past.

386 with a DVD drive is crazy
acidmine@reddit
I have a DVD drive in my 386 build too. It's not that a 386 will ever play a DVD, but as drives they are ideal. They are the latest model optical drives so they tend to be very reliable, are super compatible with all common drivers, read burned discs with ease, and are quiet. Vintage CD-ROM drives can be painful to set up and get working properly and can be very picky with media. DVD drives are a quick and easy solution to all those problems.
WarpGremlin@reddit
Second this. As long as your system has an ATAPI controller, you're all set.
You could put a DVD with files on it and it'll read it just like a CD, albeit a 4.7GB CD instead of 700MB.
Vintage drives in general are pains in the butt.
dm80x86@reddit
It might handle a VCD with a mpeg card.
acidmine@reddit
Yes, that's a possibility.
AspNSpanner@reddit
Save the CD, that was my exact computer.
Feeling_Lettuce7236@reddit
God these bring back memories. I have been dealing with computers since 1978. And in the early 80s building them later in the 80s-90s worked for a computer company technical help. These computers I used to build work on I have thrown loads of these out may still have some parts.
RolandMT32@reddit
That's cool. I wouldn't mind having a retro PC like this.
Kiwi_eng@reddit
My first home PC, a 286-12 was supplied in a case very similar to that. The 386 was available but it was early days and it would have cost me a lot more.
squareoctopus@reddit
There’s no cable management like 90s cable management. The concept is non existent. And I. love. It.
cyanopsis@reddit
And yet, this was pretty clean. I'm currently building a pentium 2 era matx case and it's a rats nest!
squareoctopus@reddit
Oh yeah baby leave that IDE blocking all airflow. That’s the stuff!!
njgriffin@reddit
I'm sure it took you some time to do that but it's pretty amazing how good that looks with just the subtle tweaks.
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Thank you
DickKickem1990@reddit
That blue really makes it look good.
ConsistentListen8697@reddit
My first "PC" computer was a 386 in that same exact case.
PrometheusANJ@reddit
I usually don't like PC cases but this is pretty snazzy with the front gadgets, red accent, fan intake grill, and interior blue. Might only be missing an era-specific dumb sticker of some sort. What's the hole down right? Beeper?
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
I have no idea what that hole is, since the speaker is behind the grill.
starcube@reddit
It's for a front-mounted keyboard connector.
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Oh, never knew that, thank you for the info!
difluoroethane@reddit
The hole at the front was for putting the keyboard port on the front of the case. I have the same case with the keyboard extension cable to allow the port on the front, though I don't use it.
setwindowtext@reddit
This looks better than the original! No, seriously, I don’t remember those cases being so bright when they were new. All of those I remember seeing had some tint of beige. Of is that just me?
Intelligent_Cup4948@reddit
Cute
Roanoketrees@reddit
I love those turbo buttons. Early overclocking.
jayjr1105@reddit
It was actually the other way around, Turbo was the normal speed of the processor, you turned turbo off if software didn't like the higher clock speed.
Common misconception with old PC's with a "turbo" button.
Roanoketrees@reddit
Wow....all these years...I had it wrong. I'm glad you told me that.
jayjr1105@reddit
I'm in my 40's and work in IT and I just learned that myself a couple weeks ago.
Roanoketrees@reddit
So am i!
duiwksnsb@reddit
Came here to agree. Turbo buttons. Back when the future looked bright.
OODLER577@reddit
Very similar to the machine we got after switching from C64. My pops may still have it.
1mrpeter@reddit
Nice. I was looking for this specific case but it was all trashed.
SoLate2Reddit@reddit
TURBO!
Zedathius@reddit
TURBO 😎
SqualorTrawler@reddit
Man that looks great. Best looking beige box I've seen in 2024.
odar420@reddit
What's that DVD drive doing in there?
Cwc2413@reddit
Live the look of that little monster!
zmbakon360@reddit
Does anyone know if I could turn a server computer into a regular computer with some minor adaptations or is that impossible?
paprok@reddit
classic! staple case of 386DX era.
did you know that full tower version of such case exists(ed)?
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Yap, my friend has one ;)
WTFpe0ple@reddit
Back in the day I purposely upgraded from my 286 to a 386 just so I could play Wing Commander. Probably the most expensive game I ever played.
JoJoGaminG1936@reddit
Oh, what would I do for such a system. It's beautiful.
I didn't knew you can connect a CD drive on 386/486; systems. good to know.
difluoroethane@reddit
Guessing you mean DVD drive, not CD drive, but DVD drives are backwards compatible, and an IDE DVD drive should work just fine as a CD drive (and work fine with DOS CD drivers) in an old system. Probably even a SATA DVD drive with a SATA to IDE adapter would work fine as well, though I haven't tried.
JoJoGaminG1936@reddit
That's good to know, something I will add to my 486 Build (once the Motherboard decides it wants to connect my Keyboard).
ThisGuyHasNoLife@reddit
Where did you get the case? The mini tower I have for my 386 is really beat up and I would like to replace it.
jayjr1105@reddit
This was my home PC minus the orange/red accent thing on the front. Is it hard to find a baby AT system like this? I would love to have something like this.
ddrfraser1@reddit
Nice. How did you make the red label?
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Designed it in ilustrator and printed it as a sticker
anothercatherder@reddit
I administered a Linux box on a Pentium 90 in a case like that 30 years ago.
Always love seeing these old girls pop up, and I love what you've done with it.
DeepDayze@reddit
Linux can run on these old things just run them headless like a server.
sabbathian@reddit (OP)
Thank you
a_zim@reddit
Beautiful. I think I may have owned that exact case with a p100 in it.
joeventura1@reddit
Geez that's a museum piece. Nicely done!!! 👊🏼
mightypup1974@reddit
Lovely! How did you restore the case?
Electronic_Algae_524@reddit
Nicely done! It's not vintage unless it has all the messy cables. 😉😎
Stunning-Produce8581@reddit
Cool! It looks sweet! You did a nice job.
eulynn34@reddit
Hell yea. I need to get one of these cases
pyrulyto@reddit
One more for really liking the case even though I didn’t like pc tower cases of the era
Joe_Early_MD@reddit
Beautiful!
amontre@reddit
Wow what model is that OAK 2mb VGA ?
rpocc@reddit
Well done! The shade of grey is perfect between drives and the enclosure.
pnightingale@reddit
Those are my absolute favourite cases.
MoebiusX7@reddit
A thing of beauty. Good work. Don't know how many DVDs you're going to be able to watch on it though, haha.
sadokffj37@reddit
Really beautiful work. Nice to see a splash of color in an old grey machine.
pegarciadotcom@reddit
Nice job on the case, looks brand new!
clagom@reddit
What a beauty
