Xena Princess Warrior reboot

If there is a reboot of Xena princess Warrior Lucy Lawless says that she’s not gonna be in it because she wouldn’t look good in leather now in a recent interview. I however have a solution she should play Athena any thoughts?

A reboot would be so lazy and watered down to make as much money as possible. It wouldn't be fun or poignant or interesting. It will be middle of the road all the time with cool fight scene choreography, sexy glances and heroic yet sexy poses in quick quick slo-mo. Possibly a banger of a sound track.

Instead of a reboot I’d like to see Xena and Gabrielle in a different incarnation. Maybe it could be set in Mongolia or Africa. We could see a totally new story, gods, characters but keep the same action, humor and character development.
Ultimately when Xena came out it was telling a story of redemption and love in a world where being a tough warrior woman was completely possible and accepted.
What kind of story could we tell today that captures the best part of the original show without a straight up retelling. That, imho, is the only way another Xena story could be told in an interesting way without being weighed down by all the baggage of being a reboot.

I like how the Roswell reboot cast actors from the original show to play older relatives in flashbacks or mentors/professors of their new incarnations.
Imagine Lucy playing Cyrene or a new mentor character written specifically for her. Imagine her playing a warrior queen like Melosa or Boudicca? Or, given her amazing dramatic range, bringing her in to play a complicated villainess?

The show doesn't need a reboot, it's already been established that Xena and Gabrielle reincarnate just move the premise to a new time period with different actors and call it Season 7, the originals can pop in via dreams to advise their new selves ATLA style.

This is actually a great idea.

I've been telling my partner that Xena and Gabby are Stede and Ed in another life.

Middle Ages Xena! Then moving through into the Renaissance! Yess!!

I would love like a good 4 hour special to give us the ending we all want with xena and Gabriel riding off in the sunset. And Lucy wouldn't even need to wear her leathers. She's had a ton of other costumes in the show that looked rad. They could make it work. But a full reboot? I don't think it's needed.

A big part of the magic Xena had was the chemistry between Lucy and Renee and the "subtext" of the characters, during the 90s.
A reboot of the show now? Very unlikely thst they'd find actors with the same chemistry, it's practically impossible to catch thst magic. And the "subtext" would become "maintext" and I'm sorry, but part of the spark was the 'teehee! secret club sees that scene differently!' when TV was just a different animal.
Tone wise. Oh boy. They would be wringing the camp and comedy out of the show in favor of another attempted GOT/Witcher knockoff. That would be a huge blow to what made Xena so loveable.
And probably the biggest oof to a reboot now, season length. You're going to be looking at a Xena with 6-9 (🤭) episodes, max. So again, all the comedy episodes, all the wierd one offs or monster of the week flicks...gone. No Bitter Suite, No Xena Scrolls, no A Day in the Life, etc. You like the Ring trilogy? Hope so, because those 3 episodes will become the entire focus of a season, tone and all.
Modern TV architecture is not made for shows that thrive in episodic variety. Star Trek has struggled with this the past 6 years, and they're just now finding their stride with Strange New Worlds leaning into things like musical episodes, and slightly less serialization. Discovery also started to ease up and found it's fun button in its, sadly, final season. And Lower Decks has shown how you can have a comedy base, but sprinkle in drama.

Ummm...they could reboot 20 years from now with LL as Xena in a nursing home, kicking ass with a cane, and dammit, she'd still look good doing it.
Sasuke1996@reddit
Yeah if we got a reboot I’d be down with her playing Athena. Gives her a chance to come back and not have to do all the stunts or dawn the leather again, even though we all know she’d still look amazing!
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
But who would we get to play Aphrodite? That’s the real question
Sasuke1996@reddit
Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Olson, or Florence Pugh
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
Maybe it could be played by different actresses depending on what mood Aphrodite is in just like the different aspects of Aphrodite there is in Greek mythology
Sasuke1996@reddit
I could get down with that.

Have Carl urban become Aries that would be funny because he was Cupid and Julius Caesar in the original what do you think?
Alllvara@reddit
If they reboot it should be animated, so lucy and renee can voice act
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
Do you remember the Gindi Tarkowski Xena princess Warrior animated movie?

Wishing for a reboot seems to be a pretty unpopular opinion around here.
Personaly, I love the story and the characters, and that goes beyond Lucy Lawless’ or Reneé O Connor’s portrayal of Xena and Gabrielle. I would love to see a reboot or a sequel, even with different actresses.
Just like with every decade comes a new version of James Bond, I think it would be great to see a different version of XWP. I’d love a darker, more serious, less goofy take on their story… If it’s no good, I can just forget about it, it’s not a problem.
At the very worst, it would probably motivate new people to write fanfictions. And I do love reading fanfictions.
On the other hand, I don’t think I would like to see Lucy Lawless playing another recurring character. Your idea of Lucy Lawless as Athena is fun to toy with though.

I mean Xena princess warrior came out almost 30 years ago with the reboots of MacGyver and Magnum PI now Matlock and night Court why can’t we get a reboot of a good fantasy series? We enjoyed as kids and bring fun corny adventures to help create new enjoyment of Greek and other mythologies to the next generation. But I can see how having Lucy Lawless as a reoccurring character can be seen as kind of fan service.

😭I feel like I got old af without realizing it -my first instinct was to reply “ We don’t need a reboot of a show that could never be matched” …then I realized how boomerish that sounded😭😭😭And Im not even a boomer. This post has sent me into an existential crisis and I haven’t even had my coffee yet😂
But then I shook the old people fog off. I’d love to see her as a descendant of Xena opening each episode as though she’s telling her kids/grandkids about an adventure their ancestor Xena had-
violet-waves@reddit
That line of thinking isn’t boomerish when it comes to the creative arts. Reboots are always lazy money grabs that only happen because a studio wants to take advantage of cult classic popularity.
Sloppy_Tuna@reddit
Ok -legit-🙏thank you that actually makes me feel better 😂
cestlavie_69@reddit
Exactly! I wish people would be inspired by XWP to create something new and bold, expanding on the foundation laid by the original creators.
Medium_War6594@reddit
I agree not everything needs a reboot
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
This could work as well. But I think she would make a fantastic Athena maybe get Sydney Sweeney to be Aphrodite
iXenite@reddit
I think at this point a reboot wouldn’t work. I’ve always felt that the original was something special, and that magic can’t really be recreated.
So if there was more Xena I think a reimagining would be better. Basically, a different approach to the franchise if that makes sense.
yaoigay@reddit
I always thought a sequel series would be better than a reboot. Have Xena taken place in the modern day. Xena and Gabby are still alive in the modern day at the end of season 6 when they destroyed the contract between Xena and Ares. It could be like like a culmination between Xena and Supernatural in that Xena and Gabby lead a team to investigate instances where ancient Greek mythology threatens modern day life and Xena and Gabby are the only ones capable of stopping it. That way Lucy wouldn't have to wear Xena's outfit, she can wear regular clothes and still be Xena.
We could even get flashbacks of Gabby and see how Gabby fought and survived without Xena, ultimately finding out which mythical enemy killed Gabby in the past. It would be so cool.
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
That would be pretty cool too
Icy-Sir-8414@reddit
She plays Athena goddess of war, strategy, wisdom and weaving good enough for me plus the same thing is happening with Hercules reboot except Kevin sorbo is going to be behind the camera if he gets involved at all so two reboots I'm personally waiting
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
That would be awesome
Icy-Sir-8414@reddit
Agreed
RulerOfAllWorlds1998@reddit
Could a reboot have her be Xena but Xena in spirit and she could wear a cloak or robe, she helps a new Xena
Xyber-Faust@reddit
I think cameos from previous cast-members in remakes are dumb, I hate it. It's a useless gimmicky thing that takes you out of it and says, 'Hey, remember when this was better.'
Mrblorg@reddit
Amazon Elder with Rene or Xena's ghost
Ahs565451@reddit (OP)
That would be good too. But I think with Lucy’s age, she has developed some sort reality and mobility in her voice that’s quite authoritative so I think one of the gods would be better for her, but I can see where you’re coming from.
