Love my 2900! Absolute tank of a machine.

I love love love retro servers. You should run some period appropriate enterprise apps 😍
diogenesNY@reddit
That is seriously badass.
Thank you for sharing.
ICQME@reddit
my power bill went up just looking at that
Illustrious-Neat5123@reddit
my dell R720 with half full bay of hard drives cost me 3000 euros to run whole 2021 year
flecom@reddit
wow you must have some insanely expensive power
Illustrious-Neat5123@reddit
at total for the whole year I paid 5000 euros, yeah end of 2021 was a madness due to hike of energy prices mostly for electricity in Belgium
but this part was for the server and the water heater I guess there is no other explainations

Those are Core Duo based Xeons and they are some of the best binned Core Duo's Intel could make, it won't be that bad. Just loud.
errolbert@reddit
I can’t hear anymore because of this picture.
stupidpunk138@reddit
In my workplace we still use 2003 as Domain Controller... we are retro...
tricheb0ars@reddit
That’s not retro that’s plain reckless
stupidpunk138@reddit
... i know...
tricheb0ars@reddit
I’m a cloud security engineer you can’t just say things like that for me to read. It disturbs me. #triggered

damn... why hasnt your workplace upgraded to something at least a little newer?
stupidpunk138@reddit
... budget and mindlessness of leadership class...
Playful-Nose-4686@reddit (OP)
damn that sucks... that sounds like hell to deal with that
flecom@reddit
those 2900s were indestructible, great machines
ShockWave_Omega@reddit
Used to have one for .. "home use" it was a noisy sob..
Playful-Nose-4686@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s insanely loud
WingedGundark@reddit
It would be interesting to know how these compare to Sun’s SPARC servers from the same era. Those things were just insane when it comes to noise they made.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
You mean the SunFires? A few of which literally caught fire?
WingedGundark@reddit
Yes, and UltraSPARC T1. I think most of their servers from mid to late 2000s were very noisy. Also, I think fire series had gear with x86 CPUs too (Opteron etc.) so not all were SPARC.
Those noisy Suns weren’t just incredibly loud, but the sound was high pitched and very irritating.
flacidhock@reddit
I went into server rooms with those things and you always wanted to remember closest exit as they had some nitrogen fire repression system that removed air from room.
2jznat@reddit
Massive machine, amazing.
rome_vang@reddit
We’re phasing it out, but we have 2x 2000 series power edge servers from this era. One just got decommissioned two weeks ago.
Why? Because decision paralysis.
Then-Bookkeeper-3754@reddit
Beautiful. But this kind of machine works way better with a Linux or BSD on it. Samba works beautifully as a DC for windows machines as well.
officialsanic@reddit
Funny you say retro. It feels like yesterday when it was new as indicated by the Windows 7-Era Intel Sticker. I can't believe this model was produced from like 2004 to about 2012. Very long lasting.
mi__to__@reddit
Issa big boi!
blissed_off@reddit
I’ve been in IT long enough to remember that and even older servers. Ugh.
hiletroy@reddit
how many BTUs? :)
Cool-Ad8475@reddit
It can still run apache?
Oscarcharliezulu@reddit
By Grabthar’s Hammer, I shall boot you !
twilliamc@reddit
WHAT? 🙉
Playful-Nose-4686@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s a high end xp era server it’s super cool and loud and high power draw lol
Hobthrust@reddit
I used to work on these, made quite a change from the old ProLiants etc.
Rabbit_AF@reddit
Chunky boi!
4Run4Fun@reddit
I've got one of those in tower form factor. I phased it out years ago, and tried to sell it - couldn't find any interested parties. Still cool, though.
Playful-Nose-4686@reddit (OP)
Yeah they are cool I got mine for pretty much free only thing I had to pay was 30 bucks for the persons gas to bring it to me cause I really didn’t wanna drive 30 miles to get something this heavy lmao
