Custom Tangent 486 Workstation Build

Don’t take the case apart too often but was doing some maintenance so seemed like a good time to take some photos lol. It’s a custom workstation tower. It originally came with an Orchid card and tons of ram. I actually dubbed it down some since in use it for DOS gaming. 486DX2, S3 VLB graphics, 16mb of ram, and a SB Pro 2. All SCSI, dual height HD and an 8Plex.

The variety of AT towers and mini towers that were produced in the late '80s and '90s never ceases to amaze me. This hobby has been part of my life for nearly 40 years, and I still see new designs I've never seen before.

My first Pc was in the mini tower version of the same case, never saw another one irl, I've now seen the midi tower and full tower versions online in the last 12 months. Mine had M-IBM in a chrome sticker and came with a 386sx 40 when I bought it.

That monitor is awesome!

Very lovely machine.
The S3 cards are pretty decent, matching well with the DX2-66. These ones also usually play nicely with LCD screens too, which is important if your not feeling strong enough to lug a CRT around for whatever reason.
The SB Pro 2 has true OPL3, which is always a plus.
SCSI is insane, but I still approve (as I have a 386SX-25 with true 20meg MFM hard drive, despite how dicey the whole setup is)

It’s a really cool monitor. Found it at an estate sale and I’ll never get rid of it. 1992 MAG professional monitor. It has vga, apple vga, and BNC inputs. Hardware buttons for all adjustments and the resolution/refresh LCD. Inside it has a fully shielded all metal chassis, never seen anything like it. Sharp bright picture too.

What make and model is it?

It’s a MAG MX17H
Haven’t really found that much info out there on it.

Can you post a video pressing the degauss button if it has one?

Hey, yay a Plextor!

It’s such an unnecessary solution for a problem that didn’t exist. I love it lol

Multi-CD games are peak frustration. At least until you get frustrated enough to buy at least one caddy for each CD you might need!
