Moving to Dallas from DMV, looking for a safe yet bubbling area as a 28 yr old single black woman who wants to have a healthy social life

Hi,
So ive been toying with the idea of moving to dallas for the better part of the year and have decided to bite the bullet to move in the beginning of next year. ive visited a few times this year and stayed with a friend who lives in frisco and i thouroghly enjoyed it as it reminds me of where i cuurently live at in the DMV
I have considered Frisco as it fits the description for a town that has things to do as well as safe, which is my number one concern.
On the other hand as someone who is moving to a new city and wansts to build a new network, I would like to be in a place that provides an atmosphere that makes it easy to make friends. I enjoy activities like yoga, going to the gym pilates etc and would like to be in an area that promotes meeting people organically.
I’ve heard of Plano and also uptown Dallas, but need help and recommendations and thoughts or opinions on areas that might be good to move to. Specific apartment recommendations are also very welcome. I have a budget of about 1800 for a one bedroom apartment. Ideally luxury, but whatever fits to bill the best will win.

Transplants always move to Uptown. If you want to be around other transplants and eat at gentrified Mexican restaurants and other TikTok fodder, move there. If you want to connect with actual locals in Dallas, move to one of the many neighborhoods in East Dallas or the Bishop Arts area. As for Frisco, it’s cool if you’re gasoline pilled, want access to midwestern chains that don’t exist anywhere else in the state, and love paying to drive on toll roads.

“Tiktok fodder” you are not wrong 😌

I also moved from DMV to to Dallas and I will say that meeting people organically is not the same here as it is in the DMV. The DMV has a lot more established social and professional networks, happy hours, meet ups etc. than there has been here. You will have to be a lot more intentional and it will be slower to meet people and build connections. It doesn’t mean that it’s not a nice place to live, I just want to be honest about my experience. Luckily I have friends here already. But if I was starting from scratch it would be really difficult.
I live in the Richardson/Plano area and I really like it, but I like it more so for the convenience not for the social life. I think people’s recommendations of Uptown, Addison, and Bishop Arts are good recommendations.

It all depends on where you’re working and where you want to spend your time. Frisco probably isn’t going to be what you’re looking for, especially if you’re moving from a more urban area of the DMV. There’s a couple blocks of good urban fabric in Frisco, but for the most part it’s suburban af.
I would recommend researching the following neighborhoods, in order:
Uptown Bishop Arts Lakewood (more suburban but still lively) Knox Henderson Legacy West Addison Circle
The DFW area is huge, and if you’re looking to meet new people, it’s best to meet them in your neighborhood. Otherwise, the drive to meet up can really hamper your relationships. It happened to my fiancé when she met some new friends - it was tough to keep up because they were a 40 minute drive apart.
Full disclosure, I’m a realtor and can help with your apartment search if youd like. Shoot me a DM if you’re interested and we can chat more

How is Lakewood suburban when it’s in the city limits and is five to ten minutes from anywhere else in the city?
Montallas@reddit
Urban and suburban refer to the type of development - not necessarily its proximity to other places.
Urban is like dense living, most greenery is in designated park spaces, little separation between buildings-if any, lots of vertical development. Like a typical downtown. Many “suburbs” like Fisco or Rockwall or whatever can have an “urban” core downtown.
Suburban is less dense - but not yet rural. Characterized by a lot of single family homes with space between them where greenery can exist. Most commercial buildings are detached and not more than 1 or 2 floors high. The commercial development that exists is primarily there to support the residential development and doesn’t usually have a lot of corporate office space (but this is kind of changing).
By this definition Lakewood is definitely suburban.
That being said - I think the person you responded to should have suggested Lower Greenville instead of Lakewood for the OP!

Is that why white rock is the largest urban lake in the country? Reminder that Ray Hubbard is also within Dallas city limits and isn’t considered an urban lake.
Montallas@reddit
I’m not sure on who decided it was “the largest urban lake” or whether or not they were using the same definition of “urban”.
Hembalaya@reddit
Couldn't have said it better myself! I threw Lakewood in as a "more suburban" option in case OP was looking for something like that, since she did ask about Frisco. Even though Lower Greenville is pretty suburban I wanted to give one option a little further out from "the usual suspects"

Im a black woman and I live in Bishop Arts, I love it. Very fun area, great for brunch, working at a coffee shop. Lots of apts to choose from.
mvregine@reddit
I second Bishop Arts! Lots of walkable shops/restaurants and the location itself is great. I think you can find a luxury apartment within your budget and I see they're continuing to build new apartments in that area.

Uptown, Knox St, Henderson Ave, Lower Greenville, or Oak Lawn. $1800 is a solid budget and you can find nice places for that.
Kedadaplus4@reddit
Addison Uptown Knox /Henderson In that order.

Where is DMV, are you stuck at the department of motor vehicles getting your driver's license??
GlocalBridge@reddit
Seriously, I do not know what DMV means. Someone spell it out.
Montallas@reddit
Oh man. It’s the greater DC metro area. DC, Maryland, Virginia.
elisabethofaustria@reddit
I think it’s DC/Maryland/Virginia.

Moved from the dmv ~3 years ago. Really miss how green it is out there, the food, the social aspects of the easy coast. Cost of living in dallas almost makes up for it though.
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
Let me guess? You live in Uptown or a random northern suburb?
ajari2020@reddit
Don’t go to East Dallas.
