How to ruin a shops reputation?

Long story short, I took my car to a shop December 2023 for an engine rebuild. I paid $3000 up front, as well as $1500 a few weeks later for some other work that I figured I might as well get it knocked out since it was there (this was just for the parts, I'd pay the rest when I picked up the car).
Well it's been 10 months and pretty much the only thing I got out of the shop was 1 excuse after the other and "it'll be done next week!" Only to arrive and find the car untouched. For 10 months it just sat, rotting outside with no work ever being done to it. But every time I stopped by (like once a month) I was given some excuse about labor shortage or something, yet he always had new projects on the rack.
Well I pulled my car from the shop (which took days because the guy kept pushing back when I could come get it) and now he's pretty much refusing to refund me any money back. Any time I tried to talk to him in the last month, he freaks out calling me entitled and wanting instant gratification (like wanting an engine rebuild done in a year is crazy??).
So not only did he steal $4500 from me, my car is also in worse shape from sitting outside through hurricanes. There is more rust, mold/mildew inside the car, doesn't run at all (I drove it into the shop) and the brakes are completely shot.
With all this, I'm feeling vengeful. So how can I ruin this shops reputation without opening myself to legal trouble? I don't want anyone else to fall for this thief.

Lawyer up
We all have heard this story before
Fucking him on reputation doesn't get you a refund
TheHomersapien@reddit
This always comes from people who've never hired a lawyer and have no clue how expensive that is.
You file in small claims court, gather your evidence and create an organized and easy to understand package out of it, then go to court and get a judgement. Winning is the easy part, collecting is harder. Is this a "real" shop with a location, equipment, computers, etc? Because after you win you can obtain a judgement and - with your local sheriff next to you - collect by seizing their property.
Jimmytootwo@reddit
Hey Tard. We clueless people here have lawyers on tap I have my own lawyer,if im getting fucked im sticking my bulldog on the mfker and have him send over a Nastygram threat letter THEN if that doesn't work we go to court
Small claims is an option but sending a letter from your lawyer costs 250 bucks and is very effective
Agent_Eran@reddit
Small claims is $50 and comes with a judgement, a lawyer letter doesn't.
So it would cost more to get less fucking with a lawyer.
People that have money to keep a lawyer on retainer on gp are in the minority.
Worldly-Pea-2697@reddit
It doesn't cost me anything but a few bucks out my check. Group legal is a thing. Some jobs offer it. I just call the number for the plan and they set me up with a lawyer, everything's covered. Hehe.
Meenmachin3@reddit
Yup. My employer just added it this year and it’s $17.30 a month
OddEscape2295@reddit
People downvotting you because they don't know. Yes a private specialized attorney can cost a lot. But us simple folk have legal shield and pay $25 a month for 24/7 attorney. My wife recently had an issue with a client. Called our attorney. They had a new contract made up in less than 3h. We didn't pay a cent other than what we normally pay.
SwissMargiela@reddit
Idk why but this comment is kinda cringe
Ill_Dig_9759@reddit
No you don't.
Tbe only lawyer you even know is your public dedender.
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
It's less about the money and more about outing him as a PoS.
JCDU@reddit
Be warned, pieces of shit like this have often had people try this before and sometimes have better lawyers than you. Trying to fuck his reputation could land YOU in court if you're not careful.
Get a decent lawyer and be content with fucking him financially.
Nervous_Newt_8650@reddit
Doesn't matter you need nail them on both. 10 months for an engine rebuild is unexcusable. 2-4 weeks to 2-3 months MAX. And your car is worse now so you might be able to get more for neglect
Hersbird@reddit
We sent 2 rebuildable core 2.2 GMs off to a shop in Spokane to be rebuilt and it took them 6 months.
Total_Roll@reddit
You can do both...
InternetExploder87@reddit
Unfortunately, its gonna cost him well over 4500 for the lawyer. I had a situation with an ex roommate before where they owed me over 10 and the lawyer I talked to said it would likely cost me more than that just in legal fees to go after her for it
Striking-Quarter293@reddit
O ly way to hurt him is get your money back if he has it
Jackson_Rhodes_42@reddit
*Ding ding ding*
NoCarpenter8194@reddit
Your not going to hurt his reputation in a way that will matter. Just lawyer up and get your money.
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
I'm waiting till possibly after getting my money back. He gets Google reviews removed (saw one last month where someone had a similar story with him and within a week it was gone).
Brave_Hoppy1460@reddit
The local news would be the best way. Call your local new station that has the “call Curtis” segment or whatever it’s called in your area. They love stuff like this
audis56MT@reddit
😆 r u located in the northern cali? I ask because u said call Curtis. I don't want much local news, but I remember, there's a local news who has a segment of call Curtis
Brave_Hoppy1460@reddit
Yes! I almost said (that’s what it’s called in my area of Cali) but just left the remark about finding the one in theirs 😆
I’m from the Central Valley
audis56MT@reddit
Once I read that I was like this guy from California. 😆
MrRocketScientist@reddit
Make sure that any statements of facts in your google review, you can prove to be true. You cannot say “he broke the headlight”. Instead say, “when I picked it up, I noticed the headlight was broken”.
NoCarpenter8194@reddit
Best way would be to document the story. Go in and talk to him in person respectfully with a camera and record secretly. If he’s that much of an ass it’ll show on camera and get it out everywhere with the full story and all the written documentation you currently have.
audis56MT@reddit
He would need to look into his state law about secret recordings
Perception_4992@reddit
Only 3k for an engine removal, rebuild and install is a red flag (assuming you’re in the US).
SaroDude@reddit
I've lived a lot of my life as angry, bitter, frustrated....
Take the high road. Take steps to get your $ and be done with it, and consider it a difficult lesson learned.
JCDU@reddit
\^ this, getting all butthurt about this and going on the war path doesn't end well or give satisfaction.
Lawyer up, screw him for as much money as humanly possible and walk away.
Dependent_Disaster40@reddit
The only issue I have here is that you don’t normally pay up front for car repairs.
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
In my experience it's normal at hospital rod/restoration shops. Usually you pay for parts up front and the labor at the end.
Dependent_Disaster40@reddit
But not all of it up front!
Suchalife671@reddit
Black book of dirty tricks...
GWBBQ_@reddit
Take it to a dealership and ask for a quote on parts and labor for the engine rebuild and repairs, and for restoring it to the condition it was in when it was dropped off.
Sue for that amount and look up the proper way to ask for treble damages - whereas punitive damages are intended to punish the offender, treble damages are intended to compensate the victim for up to 3x the value of the judgment for expenses and damages that are hard to quantify and are the result of intentional and outrageous behavior (like not having a car for 10 months, allowing it to be damaged, and making it difficult to get your car back.)
You could get a free or paid consultation with a lawyer to make sure you filled everything correctly, and ask that you be compensated for that cost, too.
AddLightness1@reddit
Unfortunately the reality is that nothing matters. If the place is open for business, people will go there.
You could open a better shop and steal all of his business...or just support a better shop and hope that they put pressure on his business.
ktappe@reddit
Take him to court. I can't figure out why you haven't done this yet.
audis56MT@reddit
Get your money back smalls claims if your comfortable going that route or get a lawyer. Call a local news channel amd c if they have anything about helping who are getting ripped off
ruddy3499@reddit
Go to your state’s consumer protection bureau. Put his business license on the line
Trevor775@reddit
File a police report for fraud
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
Police will say it's a civil issue
Trevor775@reddit
Not necessarily. You didn’t get anything in return.
The expression “One nail, no jail” is true.
Brother’s contractor took money did nothing. He got a felony and is paying restitution as part of his probation for no jail time.
TactualTransAm@reddit
There's two sides to every story. With that being said just take him to court and see what the judge thinks about his side of the story 🤷 get your money. Don't look back. If this is normal behavior for him then his reputation will get hurt enough without you doing anything.
dbolburgers@reddit
Is it an insurance approved shop? also BBB if his shop is on that platform
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
Don't know about insurance - it's more of a hot rod shop
Worldly-Pea-2697@reddit
Enter the car in car shows and set up a display about what they did to the car. Use it to spread the word.
FrostyMission@reddit
You can do a lot of things. Share your story in local groups and with the media. File against them in small claims an also against any licensing they may have. Consumer affairs etc. Also leave honest reviews on all platforms.
New_Breadfruit8692@reddit
Uh your car should have been finished in three weeks at the most and only then because of lack of parts. Get your car back and sue to get your money back. They will pay you back rather than be sued.
earthman34@reddit
This is what courts are for.
robbobster@reddit
It sounds like this shop is already doing plenty to ruin their own reputation.
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
And yet he keeps getting business
andervic209@reddit
You know exactly what you need to do. Bums like this don’t deserve to breathe shitty that happened to you this is why I’m skeptical with independent shops and would rather go to a big name
Academic_Ad_9326@reddit (OP)
Believe me, id love to go old school revenge on him - but this isn't worth prison time. It is worth buying a billboard in front of his shop for a few months though...
andervic209@reddit
That’s the move 🔥
UnknownLinux@reddit
it might just be. lol. id do it depending on the price because I'm just petty like that lmao.
C-Misterz@reddit
A judge in small claims court would love to help you out.
djguyl@reddit
You make a website in the name of the the shop, you outline how shitty their behavior is. So every time someone googles them, your website comes up. Post lots of links to socials so it ranks higher. Post vids on YouTube with the shops name and shame them.
andervic209@reddit
Do this and post the link of the site here after I live for pettiness like this
longhairedcountryboy@reddit
Take him on Judge Judy
