Am I putting too much pressure on myself?

Context: Obscure Software got approved for install, installer made and pushed to Intune, all is well.
Employee: No it needs to be X version please.
Q me spending hours trying to get the installer to work and I kept hitting the same roadblock about a SQL table within the program erroring out over the blank space. Can't edit it, can't get around it. As much as I want to be the "hero" the guy that figures it all I admit defeat and go back to the user to explain.
They insist they had it at 2 previous companies without issues. They want a local install which I refuse due to policy (all apps must be pushed through Intune). They want local admin rights to "inspect the installer" ( lol no). I tell them I even called the company and couldn't get it a answer out of their support either.
Where does my responsibilities end here? I've done everything, the latest version works, I don't know what else to do. I feel bad for not figuring it out but how far am I supposed to take this? This is not a problem with Intune or our machines, it's another companies installer...what/how am i supposed to feel? I want to do a good job, I want to provide but this honestly seems like it's not my problem and out of my hands.

Ask for a business case of why version X is needed, including the specific features that are missing from the currently installed version. If they can make a solid case that the current version does not meet the business need AND version X is not at or near EOS, then you may need to try and fix it, otherwise, the current working version is fine.

This is the most likely answer to why they need version X. People are weird about colors of buttons.
Megafiend@reddit
Agreed. Or the layout of some menu they like. Agree with the top comment on this thread. Request business case. That'll likely stop this anyway....

I recall an app install (Mainframe 3270) I performed where the interface was upgraded and the old desired interface was available via a switch during installation.
brekfist@reddit
Change the policy.
Software approved for install. Job is to get it installed.
PrincipleExciting457@reddit
Job is to follow policy.
TikBlang_AR@reddit
Nope! find an alternative software instead of changing the policy.
UncleBlob@reddit
Where do you work that operates like that?
Hotshot55@reddit
No.
Ethan-Reno@reddit
That is not a good precedent.

omg - welcome to the hell that is my life - this could be a verbatim transcript of what I've bee going through for like the past couple of months. Insisting on going against corporate security policy, jumping form one idea to another boiling inside his head and expecting people to know what he's babbling about, demanding equipment be bought outride and installed just for his project... meanwhile, my boss who has been hiding form it all gives me some yellow striped blurb about 'customer service' and how I better not call the vendor because we can't afford it... - just kill me....

Is said obscure software something they've used elsewhere, are comfortable with and want because it's a preference? Or is said software a necessary tool for performing their job function that cannot be easily replaced with an equivalent cooperative tool?
If it's the former, their boss needs to put in paperwork to my boss for me to keep going. Their boss needs to sign off on the resource expenditure that my time is now becoming.
If it's the latter, the last thing I'd try is a direct install of the old version on an isolated machine without Intune, and then via Intune. I want to know if any of those work also. That would give some additional troubleshooting clues.

Seemed more of a preference when speaking to them, even though they did state a few things were different and harder in the new version. I'm not stranger to updates fucking good programs so I get it.
Local install vs intune is the same. Same popup issue. I CAN move past it and it will install but I have no idea what it would break elsewhere in the program down the line, I'd rather not take this route just to go back as TS later over the same bullshit.

Where did you purchase the software from?
Ethan-Reno@reddit
Realistically, you’ve put too much effort in already. I’d have him open another ticket, then note what you’ve tried, and pass it up to your boss.
We are not slaves to get exactly what someone wants, unless it’s your boss.
